==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: On the weather maps and water vapor satellite imagery this
afternoon, we find an upper level low pressure system spinning over the
Texas Panhandle. This cyclonic circulation is part of a broad trough of low
pressure over the central part of the country. This feature is steering the
weak circulation of Tropical Depression Matthew to the north and east. The
broad southwesterly flow aloft is spreading lots of moisture northward into
the Southeast.

Over the Gulf, we see the sputtering thunderstorms of Matthew, struggling to
hold themselves together unsuccessfully. Matthew is not expected to
re-intensify and should remain a depression as it makes it northerly sojourn
toward the Gulf Coast. The official NHC track carries it over the Central
Louisiana coast Sunday morning, then northward into southern Mississippi
during the day. This more westerly track will keep Alabama on the wet side
of the disorganized tropical system.

Drier air in the lower levels of the atmosphere kept showers from reaching
the ground until just before dawn across much of Alabama this morning.
Moderate to heavy rain was spreading into southern Mississippi and Southwest
Alabama this afternoon. This precipitation shield weaken into a large area
of showers as it head northward, which means we will have showers through
the overnight hours and into Sunday. The main area of moderate to heavy
rain associated with Matthew should overspread the state during the day on
Sunday, reaching our area Sunday afternoon and lasting into Sunday evening.

Rainfall amounts will be significant across much of Central Alabama,
averaging one to three inches between now and Monday. The rainfall should
begin to taper Sunday night, but Matthew may stick around longer than we
would like.

HEADING INTO NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday, the remnant low pressure system of
Matthew will still b languishing over northern Mississippi. This will keep
us in showery conditions during the day on Monday. The GFS hints that the
low may slowly drift eastward across North Alabama on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Although it does not look like the system would be a heavy rain producer, it
could keep us in showers until midweek, finally diminishing on Wednesday.

POTENT COLD FRONT AHEAD: Early in the week, a significant cold air regime
will be establishing itself over Canada and preparing for an invasion. That
invasion will be in full force by Wednesday behind the phalanx of a strong
cold front which will be steamrolling south. That front should reach
Alabama on Thursday, bringing us much cooler and drier air. It promises to
be the coolest air we have seen in the state since at least May, and perhaps
as long as mid-April.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: Beautiful weather should prevail on Saturday, with
lots of sunshine and cool temperatures. High pressure should slide off to
the east by Sunday, allowing for a dramatic return of southerly winds. This
will increase moisture levels and warmth starting on Sunday and lasting into
Monday.

...Hello Matthew...

GOOD MORNING! One week ago this morning, this was the final sentence in my
narrative about this week's weather: the GFS hints at a tropical
disturbance moving northeast over the Gulf that could affect our weather by
the weekend. It is just amazing to me that the numerical weather prediction
models are as good as they are. I know that we grumble and fuss about them,
but the scenario the GFS has been painting for almost ten days now is coming
true. Now, just where Matthew goes and how strong it will become is a point
of conjecture, so let's get started.

WHERE GOETH MATTHEW? That may not be the most important question for our
weather. The more important question may be where goes the non-tropical low
that is to the northwest of the tropical storm. This low is forecast to
move over southeastern Louisiana and curve northward into Mississippi. This
keeps Alabama in a southerly flow of deep moisture and means a good
drenching for much of the state. Across North Central sections of the
state, we could see two to three inches of rain. Southern sections may see
five inches or more.

Matthew will likely rotate around the first low, turning northeast and then
to the north northeast, reaching the Northwest Florida coast between
Pensacola and Fort Walton and moving up into South Alabama. The good news
is that the storm is not expected to intensify significantly and should
remain a tropical storm until landfall.

Showers have been advancing northeastward across southwestern Alabama since
last evening. That mass of rain should expand and become heavier during the
morning hours, with a steady soaking rain into Sunday, and perhaps into
Monday. Needless to say, this forecast will require lots of refinement
through the weekend. A cold front should arrive on Thursday, giving us the
coolest readings we have seen since May.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Rain gear needed today? In Lexington, probably not. In
Auburn, yes. In Starkville, most definitely.

==================================================================

COMBINED ALABAMA/TROPICAL UPDATE: It's a kinship developing between Alabama
and tropical weather. The National Hurricane Center has a reconnaissance
plane in the low pressure area over the Gulf of Mexico. It shows signs of
tropical development. If, by chance, it becomes a tropical storm, it will be
named Matthew.

It doesn't make much difference whether it becomes a named storm or not. The
disturbance is already loaded with moisture and it's going to bring a heavy
rain event to a rather widespread area. It will be producing gale force
winds along parts of the Gulf Coast. The center will move inland and
continue northward passing west of Alabama over the weekend.

A flood watch is already in effect for extreme SW Alabama and SE
Mississippi. The National Weather Service in Mobile says this will be a
prolonged rain event for that area and there may not be much letup until
midday Sunday. As much as 3 to 5 inches of rain may occur in that area and a
few spots could get 5 to 7 inches where thunderstorms are involved.

Across Central Alabama, including such places as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and
Anniston, the total rainfall over the weekend and into Monday may easily
total 1 to 2 inches. This is very timely, because we have gone three weeks
without any rain. If we did not get rain soon, surely there would have been
an enhanced fire threat because of so many trees down from Hurricane Ivan.
We think the rain will taper off later Monday with dry weather on Tuesday.
Looking quite a way down the road, there are increasing indications that we
will have the lowest temperatures since last spring by the end of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Down in SW Alabama there will be some rain for tonight's
games, but across the central part of the state we believe the rain will
hold off until late tonight. For Saturday's Alabama-Kentucky game in
Lexington at 11:30 a.m., it should be about 72 at kick off with a slight
chance of rain. Louisiana Tech plays in Auburn at 2:30 p.m. Advisable to
take the rain gear because there is a chance of rain with around 74 degrees
at kick off. Just over the Mississippi-Alabama border, UAB meets Mississippi
State in Starkville for a 2:30 p.m. game. Temperatures will persist in the
mid 70s with brisk east wind and a good chance of rain and possibly some
thunderstorms.

FRIDAY NOTES: Way out in the Western Pacific, super Typhoon Ma-on has
sustained winds of 160 with gusts to 195 mph. It was moving northward and
will affect Japan within 24 hours. It was kicking up 32-foot waves...low
temperatures this morning included 24 in Big Piney, Wyoming and 19 at
Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Perfect weather for a sunrise walk with little
Miss Molly. We saw low clouds coming in from the east and high clouds moving
up from the SW and just the right configuration for a nice sunrise. The Old
Crow Motel sure looked great with that kind of backdrop. Molly's personality
bubbles over on her first walk of the day. It reminds me of children on the
last day of school. We only saw three birds this morning and they weren't
singing or talking. Molly was loping along like a kangroo so I had to move
fast too. Life goes on. JBE

...Some Needed Rain Is On The Way...

Our three week dry spell is about to end thanks to moisture streaming
northward from a large disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico.

Today will be breezy and cool across Alabama as a wedge pattern continues. A
cool easterly flow will keep daytime temperatures in the 70s, and we will
have cloudy periods as well. But, we do not expect any rain through tonight.
Rain will expand into the state during the day tomorrow, with rain reaching
the northern counties by afternoon. Then, periods of rain are likely
tomorrow night through Sunday as a surface low moves slowly into south
Mississippi. Showers could linger into Monday before drier air begins to
arrive Monday night and Tuesday.

A BIG CHILL: We still project a sharp change to colder weather in about 8 to
10 days as a very deep upper trough forms over the eastern third of the
nation. Longer range models suggest early morning temperatures could reach
the 30s over parts of north Alabama at some point in the October 16-19 time
frame, with some frost not out of the question.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for high school games tonight, but the sky will be
mostly cloudy with temperatures around 70 at kickoff.
Auburn hosts Louisiana Tech tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at Jordan-Hare
Stadium. The sky will be cloudy, and some rain is likely during the game
with temperatures only around 70 degrees. Alabama travels to Lexington to
play Kentucky tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. A few light showers are possible with
temperatures in the 70 to 74 degree range. And, UAB will take on Mississippi
State at Starkville at 2:30. Rain is likely with temperatures in the low 70s
at Scott Field. You will need the rain gear!

==================================================================

FINALLY, SOME WEEKEND RAIN: After three weeks with no rain in most
communities, I believe everyone would be receptive to some rain over the
weekend. Friday should remain dry-a pleasant autumn day, but clouds will
increase by Saturday with a chance of rain. Sunday should be cloudy most of
the day with periods of rain and we believe that is the day we will get the
most rain. However, the rain should also linger into Tuesday. Temperatures
over the next several days will be plenty nice with highs in the mid 70s.
Reason for the rain? It's due to a broad low pressure area over the western
Gulf of Mexico. It has become slightly better organized and there is a
potential for some tropical development over the next day or two. It is
expected to move northward and that's where some confusion sets in. Some of
the models swing it toward the NE passing across coastal Alabama and into
North Florida by Tuesday morning. However, the model we're leaning on mostly
today will carry the low inland passing northward through Louisiana and to
near Memphis by Monday morning. This will keep Alabama on the east side of
the low and give us a pretty decent chance of rain.

TONS AND TONS AND TONS OF RAIN: We all know that water is heavy. You old
timers who used to lug a #3 washtub full of water toward the scrub board and
Octagon soap, can vouch for that. But today we want to try to estimate how
many tons of rain fell on Alabama during Hurricane Ivan. I added up the
24-hour totals from 59 locations in Alabama that had a rain gauge. I
averaged it and it was 5.70 inches per location. Let's round that down to 5
inches.

The weight of one square mile of water one inch deep is 72,516 tons. There
are 52,423 square miles in Alabama, so one inch of rain over the entire
state would weigh 3,801,492,265 tons. Let's round that off to 3.8 billion
tons per one inch of rain and since we had an average of 5 inches or more,
that would be approximately 19 billion tons of rain. We want to be sure and
thank Stephen Fancher, Associate Director of Institutional Research,
Planning and Assessment at the University of Montevallo for his input
concerning the weight of rain per square mile and how many square miles
there are in Alabama.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Lots and lots of playtime with little Miss
Molly overnight. I got her sleeping hours mixed up again. She took a long
evening nap and then went on a playing binge by herself toward midnight. She
has so much energy it explodes at times. We could hear her running through
the house at breakneck speed turning corners. You could hear her claws
gripping the carpet and she skidded across the hardwood foyer at times. She
did that for 15 minutes and then went kerplop and sound asleep...on our
early morning walk today, no sunrise because of low clouds...we saw 17
crows...yes, I count them...Molly and I like to think that they are putting
on an air show for us...Molly was mostly interested in foraging. I kept
urging her to move on...so I finally said, "Look at me Molly." I should not
have used the word "look". It is the buzz word of the highest order for her,
like a code yellow or code purple. She has latched on to that word to mean
someone is invading her territory...so she took off at breakneck speed and I
barely avoided another whiplash. Life goes on with lots of ups and downs at
times...but most enjoyable just the same.

...Watching the Gulf of Mexico...

Our attention is turning to the western Gulf of Mexico, where a large area
of disturbed weather continues, and seems to be getting better organized.
There is some chance this system could become a tropical depression during
the next 24 hours as it moves slowly to the north. There is even some chance
a tropical storm could form in this region based on warm sea water
temperatures and relatively light winds aloft. If a storm does form, the
name will be Matthew.

Bands of heavy rain will continue to spread into the coastal sections of
Texas and Louisiana today in advance of the Gulf disturbance.

That system should end Alabama's long dry spell, which is in its 21st day
today for most communities around here. Clouds will begin to return on
Saturday, and we will mention the chance of some rain by mid to late
afternoon. Then, a few periods of rain are a good bet Saturday night into
Sunday. The amount of rain we see across the northern half of the state all
depends on the evolution and track of the Gulf of Mexico system. Parts of
south Alabama could see heavy rain at times.

A few stray showers are possible Monday of next week, followed by drier
weather during the middle of the week.

EARLY COLD SHOT: The longer range models continue to show a quick shot of
unusually cold air for October in here in about 9 to 10 days. More than
likely, there will be a chance of a light frost in the colder valley
locations of north Alabama on at least one morning in the October 16-19 time

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for 2004 is 43.95", which is 1.53"

SOME RAIN FOR THIS WEEKEND: The dryness continues and most communities have
now been rainless for almost three weeks. But things are looking up and we
should get some rain this weekend. It appears that our better chance of rain
will be on Sunday, but we'll have a decent chance of showers by late
Saturday and especially Saturday night. The largest amount of rain will be
over the southern sections of the state, especially near the coast. Across
North-Central Alabama we may see some amounts around two-thirds of an inch.

All of this rain will be due to a low pressure system moving eastward across
the North Gulf of Mexico just off shore. See our day-by-day forecast for
more details.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The West Gulf of Mexico is still restless with scattered
thunderstorms. They don't seem to be talking to each other and getting their
act together. There are no signs of tropical development. That broad area of
moisture will bring some good rainfall amounts to Gulf coastal areas as it
drifts north then east.

MORE ABOUT AUTUMN COLOR: We mentioned a day or so ago about some browning
showing up along the ridges, making me worry about a good fall season. We
know that a late-season dry spell or a sudden change to much colder can hurt
our colors. I asked my friend, Mike Pender, who is the owner of Classic
Gardens and Landscape in Center Point, to describe what causes autumn color.

These are his words, "During the spring and summer, leaves are green because
the pigment chlorophyll is dominant. Chlorophyll is what helps the leaf make
sugars or food. The other colors are there, but you cannot see them because
of the chlorophyll. In the fall, trees get their signals to quit making
chlorophyll because of cooler nights and shorter days. Trees that have high
sugar content, like maples, produce anthocyanin in the fall that changes the
leaf from green to red and then to yellow. In abnormally dry fall seasons,
color is reduced significantly because the parched leaves cannot produce the
anthocyanin."

By the way, a few years ago I wondered out loud how many trees there were in
Alabama. Mike was intrigued by that, did some research, and came up with a
good estimate.

COMING UP: Tomorrow we're going to run an interesting story on how much the
rain weighed that fell on Alabama during Hurricane Ivan. It is amazing.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly went on a witch hunt with me
last night. The "witch" was a mosquito buzzing around inside our house.
Numerous attempts to whap it were unsuccessful. In fact, I almost ruined a
Time magazine, National Geographic and Birmingham News using those as bats.
Gave up and went to bed. At 5 this morning as I came in my weather office,
that mosquito lit on my computer screen and was reading my e-mail. I should
have gotten my trusty little blue pooper scoop that I am highly accurate
with getting rid of pests. Little Miss Molly was jumping high as she could
trying to grab the mosquito. Finally caught him when he landed on the
microwave...lot's of playing with Molly today...chase ball, soccer, and
numerous tummy rubs. I am back on her good list after neglecting her for
several days...a great sunrise walk...this is a great time of the
year...life goes on...even with a visiting mosquito.

...The Long Dry Spell Continues...

The long dry spell continues across Alabama, and for most places this will
be the 20th day in a row with no rain. The dry, pleasant weather will
continue through Friday.

An easterly flow could set up a "wedge" effect tomorrow and Friday with
cooler daytime temperatures over the eastern half of the state.

A NERVOUS GULF: While our weather stays calm, a large area of disturbed area
is sitting over the western Gulf of Mexico. We will have to keep an eye on
this area for signs of tropical development since water temperatures are
warm and winds aloft are not too harsh. But, even if a tropical system does
not develop, this big blob of moisture will move north, and then northeast,
and could bring an end of our dry days.

Clouds will thicken on Saturday, and some rain could reach the central and
northern part of the state by Saturday afternoon. Then, we will highlight
periods of rain Saturday night into Sunday as a surface low moves eastward
through the extreme northern Gulf of Mexico. While the heaviest rain should
be over the southern counties of the state, we might see one-half to one
inch of rain around here.

Drier air returns by late Monday of next week, with relatively cool and dry
weather for the mid-week period.

COLDER DAYS?: The long range models continue to suggest the coldest air so
far this season moving into Alabama sometime in the October 16-20 time
frame, which has the potential to bring early morning temperatures in the
30s in the colder north Alabama valleys. A deep upper air trough is expected
to form over the eastern U.S. in about 10 days, and should bring very chilly
air to much of the nation east of the Mississippi River.

HOW DRY WE ARE: Most communities in the state went through the 19th day in
a row without rain today. Actually, a little bit of rain showed up on radar
in parts of South Alabama, but it had no chance of reaching the ground
because of the very dry air. What are our chances? Very little until this
weekend. We expect mostly sunny dry weather to continue for the next couple
of days. We should have a slight chance of rain by late Saturday and a
slightly improving chance Saturday night. However, our best chance of rain
will come on Sunday and Monday as a low pressure system over the north Gulf
of Mexico moves eastward offshore south of the Alabama-NW Florida coast. We
think most of this rain will be over the south half of the state.
Temperatures will be those that you cannot conscientiously complain about.
(See our day-by-day forecast.)

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave was moving westward over the SW Gulf of
Mexico this afternoon producing showers and thunderstorms. The National
Hurricane Center does not expect this to form into a tropical depression or
a tropical storm.

FAMOUS HURRICANE PARTY-A MYTH?: We have all heard of a legendary hurricane
party during powerful Hurricane Camille at the Richelieu Apartments in Pass
Christian, Mississippi. However, a few years ago, the Biloxi-Gulfport Sun
Herald published a series of interviews with a few who actually survived
that night. They denied a hurricane party. Instead, they were all getting
together to keep each other company and ride out the storm because they did
not believe it would be that bad. We appreciate Ken Harness, one of our
regular readers, for furnishing this information. Ken had first-hand
knowledge of Camille. He grew up in Biloxi and lived through that terrible
night-one that he will never forget. He said one of the more frightening
things were people tying themselves to trees while clinging to the top of
their houses so that they would not be swept away and how one of the
survivors of the apartments floated out of the building on a mattress while
it was disintegrating around her.

PROWLING IN ALL DIRECTIONS: A very cold 19 degrees this morning at
Cadillac, Mich., 14 at Yukon, Alaska and 2 below zero at Isachen in Northern
Canada...on Wolf Creek Pass in SW Colorado, it was snowing this morning
along with thunder and lightning...the first widespread frost of the season
for Eastern Kentucky tonight...three inches of rain at Waco.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure seemed like old times with Little Miss
Molly as we took our early morning walk today-my first time to walk her in
four days. When she wakes up each morning, she moans and stretches and
immediately makes her inspection tour...checking and sniffing every room in
the house with her tail wagging constantly. Then, whammo, she pounds the
miniature bell hanging from the back door knob insisting it is time to
go...and go now! If I don't respond right away, she finds me and plops as
flat on the floor as possible and walls her eyes up at me. That means even
greater urgency...so I tied my shoes in record time and away we went. The
sunrise was spectacular with scattered middle clouds and thin cirrus
clouds...but Molly was in her NASCAR mode which means I was going as fast as
my little legs would carry me with no time to warm up...a long play session
when we returned. Life goes on sometimes at break neck speed. We enjoy it
all.

...We Need Some Rain Around Here...

For most Alabama communities, today will be the 19th day in a row without a
drop of rain. The last widespread rain was from Hurricane Ivan back on
September 16.

Rain will not in our forecast for the next three days, with lots of sunshine
each day through mid-week with just a few scattered clouds from time to
time. Temperatures will be fairly close to normal levels for early October
in Alabama.

Late in the week, an easterly flow could set up a wedge type situation, with
cooler temperatures over the eastern side of the state. Accordingly, we have
nudged high temperatures downward a bit by Thursday and Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: A disturbance is expected to form in the northwest Gulf of
Mexico, and that will bring the risk of wet weather to at least parts of the
state by Saturday. It could be that the most widespread rain will fall over
the southern half of the state, but for now we will mention a few periods of
rain for north and central on both Saturday and Sunday. We should also point
out this is still hurricane season, and we will be watching for any signs of
tropical organization in the western Gulf later in the week.

We will probably have to fine tune the weekend forecast a good bit over the
next few days, so watch for changes.

EARLY COLD BLAST? The longer range model output suggests the coldest air so
far this season could invade Alabama in about two weeks or so. This could
put temperatures around here in the 30s during the early morning hours along
with the possibility of some frost. Stay tuned!

AROUND THE HORN: Dallas/Fort Worth was soaked with 2.33" of rain yesterday.
Cold spot in the nation was Plentywood, MT with 16.

==================================================================

PRETTY WEATHER, BUT TOO DRY: Most of our area has not had any rain since
Hurricane Ivan drenched Alabama in mid-September. There is a good chance
that we will go through most of this week without any rain also. A cold
front to our north will slowly move through tonight bringing a reinforcement
of cooler dry air. This will allow our nighttime lows to be in the 50s the
rest of the week and highs backing off a bit to the lower 80s. On Sunday, a
few places in South Alabama reached 90. Lots of sunshine for the next
several days. We could have some high cirrus clouds move across tonight due
to a thunderstorm complex well to the west of Alabama.

OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: It may be this weekend, especially late in the
weekend and early next week. This is due to a low pressure area over the SW
Gulf of Mexico working its way northward toward the Louisiana coast. When
the low gets into the northern Gulf of Mexico it is expected to curve NE.
Probably the best rainfall amounts will be over Central and South Alabama.
Not a great deal of confidence of that yet.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave, now over the SW Gulf of Mexico, was
moving west. The National Hurricane Center thinks it will move onshore into
Eastern Mexico before having time to develop. Part of this will probably
evolve into that low expected to move up over the Northern Gulf and produce
some weekend rain.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: Out driving this weekend, noticed some browning beginning
to take place in the woodlands. It wasn't long ago that everything was so
lush green after Ivan. I sure hope we will get some rain soon. I fear if we
don't, a lot of the leaves will turn brown and fall off and dilute our
autumn foliage season...I'm going to make every effort to drive up the Paint
Rock River Valley in extreme North Alabama during autumn color...some real
cold air continues to build up over extreme Northern Canada where
temperatures have been hanging out between 5 and 8 below zero for nearly a
week...first widespread freeze of the season tonight for Northern
Illinois...with upper 20s in the Chicago area, especially in the outlying
areas...on this date in 1995, anxiety was high as powerful Hurricane Opal
was pushing toward the NW Florida coast. Alabama was hurt badly.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is giving me the cold
shoulder. I have been so busy that I have had no time to play soccer or
chase ball with her for at least four days. I really believe that little
squirt keeps a scorecard. She wouldn't even take a power nap with me this
morning. I am determined to make up to her. You should have seen her
Saturday when our entire street held a community yard sale. She thought it
was her responsibility to personally greet every person that came by...she
stood on her hind legs by the front door window much of the day whining. No
naps and when the day was over, she was totally exhausted. Life goes on.

...Nice Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It's a nice start out there on this early October morning
with refreshing temperatures and clear skies. Much of the coming week
promises to be nice, thanks to high pressure that will be holding sway
across the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Today will be a beautiful day again, with lots of sunshine
and temperatures that will warm well into the 80s thanks to lots of dry air.
A reinforcing shot of slightly cooler, and dry air is heading towards the
state and will arrive later today. This front will help to keep our
temperatures near normal for the remainder of the week. Tuesday through
Thursday should see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, but conditions will
be dry. Clouds may be on the increase by Friday as a tropical system over
the Gulf of Mexico organizes and moves toward the Louisiana coast. Strong
high pressure to the east of Alabama will block the feature's progress and
shunt it just to our west. This could spread copious amounts of moisture
into Alabama and the South starting on Saturday. We have been worried that
this system might take on tropical characteristics, and there is a chance
that it might, but for now it appears that it may be a regular old low
pressure system, albeit a wet one. Our weekend forecast will depend heavily
on the future track of this system. For now, we will call for increasing
rain chances by Friday night, lasting until Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Residents along the Gulf Coast awakened to the
disturbing news that Hurricane Opal had intensified overnight from a
category two hurricane to a monster category 4 storm with top winds of 150
mph. Evacuations were frantic during the morning hours, and massive traffic
jams ensued. Fortunately, Opal weakened back to category two status before
making landfall on the Florida Panhandle later that afternoon. Still, Opal
brought a devastating fifteen foot storm surge and 115 mph winds to the
beautiful beaches of Northwest Florida. Opal produced damaging winds well
into North Alabama, causing a massive power outage that would be the state
record, until Ivan came.
