....Coldest April Morning Ever Tomorrow?...

Historic weather may be on the menu for Alabama on this Holiday
Weekend as potentially the coldest air ever seen in these parts in any
April is in store for us. If we drop to 25F or lower at the
Birmingham Airport, it will be the coldest April morning ever in the
history of the station.

WATCHING THE THERMOMETER: It will be a nervous night for growers all
across the state of Alabama and the Deep South. Peach growers in
Central Alabama will be especially concerned. Readings tonight are
expected to range between 20-28. With several hours of freezing
readings expected, there is a risk that we could lose much or all of
the peach crop, which was expected to be especially good this year.
That could happen with only a couple of hours below 30F. We will hope
and pray for a miracle.

SUNRISE SERVICES: Many congregations will be holding Easter Sunrise
services in the morning. Conditions will be dry and cold. So if your
service is outdoors, make sure you are bundled up.

MOVING FORWARD: Sunday will feature a mix of clouds and sunshine,
with a high in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Readings on Sunday
night will be several degrees warmer than tonight, but still will
likely drop below freezing. We are holding out hope that clouds will
overspread the area after midnight and act as a blanket to keep
temperatures up just a bit. Keep your fingers crossed. There could
even be a little light sleet, light snow or light rain after midnight
early Monday morning. After the disturbance moves past, conditions
will be dry on Monday.

Temperatures will warm back to near 60. By Monday night, a
southeasterly flow will start picking up over Alabama and temperatures
should start to go back up overnight. By Tuesday, we should be back
into the upper 60s to near 70s degrees as strong low pressure moves
across southeastern Missouri. Rain and thunderstorms will overspread
the area from the southwest ahead of an approaching cold front Tuesday
night into Wednesday morning. Some of those storms could be on the
strong to severe side. We go cooler and cloudy on Thursday. Partly
cloudy on Friday, before we start being affected by another storm
system next weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Snow spoiled the home openers for the New York
Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians as a spring snowstorm
brought a swath of snow from the Midwest to the Northeast. Five to
eight inches of snow fell in New York City, making it one of the
heaviest April snowstorms in Big Apple history. The late season snow
was just another chapter in the saga of a snowy winter in New York
City that drought twice the normal annual snowfall for the city. The
Yankees postponed the home opener until the following day, and pushed
the first pitch back three hours to give stadium crews time to get
ready for the game. The Yankees are not very prepared for snow, so t
hey had to call the football Giants to borrow 200 snow shovels to help
remove snow from underneath the seats.

...Record Cold...

It is not often that a weather station with over 100 years of
continuous climate date sees the opportunity for a monthly or annual
record to be broken. But that is what we are talking about as we head
into what may be the coldest period ever in any April in Birmingham.
The coldest April reading ever was 26F on April 11, 1973. We could
easily surpass that mark in the morning. This is unprecedented cold
and something that could be devastating to local agricultural
interests, particularly our beloved peach crop.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: We got off to a cold start this morning across the
area with near record temperatures. Today will be breezy and cold,
with highs likely staying in the 40s all day. Tonight, a freeze
warning is in effect for some of the coldest temperatures ever
observed in Alabama in any April. We could establish a new April
record low temperature as temperatures fall well into the 20s for
several hours. For now, we are calling for an average low of 24F
across the area. Obviously, this means big problems for local
agricultural interests, including the peach industry. Just short
period of 30F or lower readings could be devastating.

EASTER FORECAST: Sunrise services will be dry and cold in the
morning, with readings in the 20s. The day will be partly sunny and
continued cold with less of a north breeze than today. Temperatures
should peak around 50 degrees. We are keeping our fingers crossed
that some clouds will spread across the area Sunday night, acting as a
blanket and keeping overnight readings closer to 30 degrees. Still
not good, but it may all be academic if we get to 24F tonight.

NEXT WEEK: High pressure holds on for Monday, but by Monday night, a
warmer and moister southeasterly flow kicks in across Alabama.
Temperatures may even edge up a bit during the night. Tuesday should
feature increased clouds and breezy conditions with a chance of
showers and storms as a warm front comes north. Low pressure over
Arkansas will be pulling that warm front north and following up with a
cold front late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Showers and
storms will move into the state ahead of the front, Some of those
storms could be on the strong to severe side and rainfall amounts
could be heavy. The air mass behind this front is not Arctic in
nature, so we should enjoy mild conditions with temperatures near
normal for the end of the week. Look for another storm system over
the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: An Oklahoma University Meteorology Student,
Reed Timmer, caused controversy when he told an Oklahoma City
television station that he had to drive 100 mph to catch up to a
tornado he wanted to video. Timmer captured impressive footage of
the massive tornado as it traveled across parts of rural Texas The
interview sparked quite a bit of debate in the storm chaser community
about chasing safety and responsibility.

A POSSIBLE DAMAGING FREEZE: Several weather problems exist for
Alabama. Here is a quick abstract look. First, the state is very dry.
By tomorrow afternoon, the dew point may fall as low as the single
digits with brisk north winds. This means extreme caution for
woodland fires. Second, weekend freeze may be damaging. Third, some
strong thunderstorms by midweek. Some of those could be severe.

The most immediate concern is the very cold temperatures we are
expecting all the way through the weekend. Indeed, there is a chance
that we may record the lowest temperatures ever in the month of
April. Reliable records go back as far as the 1880s. It has been
mostly sunny across the state today with brisk north winds. There is
quite a bit of cloudiness to the west and NW of Alabama. Some of that
will be over the area overnight. Despite that, we expect low
temperatures to be in the mid and upper 20s, generally around 26
across Central Alabama. Cold air will continue to flow into the state
from the NW Saturday, with winds over 20 mph at times. Our projected
high of 49 will feel a lot colder than that. It will not be a good
day for a fire to break out in the woodlands.

It now appears that Sunday morning will be our coldest. We are using
24 for a low. A lot of that will depend on your location and how much
wind you have. In the protected areas such as the valleys, that 24
looks good. On the ridges, the low may be more like 28 or 29.
Finally, a milder trend will start Monday and by Tuesday afternoon,
temperatures will warm well into the 60s—maybe the upper 60s.

Look for some scattered showers to arrive Tuesday night along with
the chance of some thunderstorms. The better chance of those will be
later Tuesday night and extending into Wednesday. Outside chance that
a few of those could be severe on Wednesday.

THE DANGER OF OUR WEEKEND FREEZE: Obvious that you should protect
all your tender vegetation. Jason Simpson interviewed Mayor Tom
Bentley from Thorsby this morning and here are a few notes from that
interview: The winter and spring season were perfect this year for
peaches and Chilton County growers were expecting the best crop in
years. Now it looks as if the crop could be a total loss. If it is
just 30 degrees for a short time, the entire crop could be severely
damaged.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 1
above zero at several places in Northern Minnesota. The area around
Central and Eastern Canada, especially the huge Hudson Bay area, has
had a winter to remember. Makes me wonder how deep Hudson Bay is
frozen. My guess is that all those polar bears that call Churchill,
Manitoba home would like to catch a fast train south. That bitter
cold has been pushing down into the USA at intervals and we know what
kind of winter the NE part of the country has had.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The sky was so crisp and clear. A
distinct chill in the brisk north wind and the bright sun reflecting
off Little Miss Molly and her hair blown around by the wind, made for
a great walk. The Old Crow Motel stood out sharp and clear back-
lighted by the early sun. It is the tallest tree in the community. It
has to be older than Legion Field and me. It cannot be around many
more years, but it stands tall near a wide grassy open area. Molly
especially likes that, because she can run and play through the
grass. Often hard to turn her around. Life goes on.....

...Coldest April Temperatures on Record...

At this moment it looks like this weekend will bring the coldest
temperatures on record for the month of April to Birmingham and much
of Alabama. We are forecasting a damaging freeze tomorrow, Sunday, and
Monday morning with low temperatures between 21 and 31 degrees. The
valleys will experience the coldest temperatures, while ridgetops will
be slightly warmer. For most communities, temperatures will be below
freezing for 4 to 6 hours on all three mornings.

COVER THOSE PLANTS: You will need to take action to protect tender
plants, flowers, and other vegetation that don't do well in freezing
temperatures. For many commercial fruit growers in Alabama, the next
three nights will be sleepless. Peaches, in particular, are
susceptible to freezing temperatures below 28 degrees for more than
four hours. Lets sure hope our friends in Chilton County don't suffer
too much damage over the weekend.

AN EASTER CHILL: At sunrise Easter Sunday morning (which, by the way,
occurs at 6:26 a.m.
CDT), we are projecting a temperature of about 26 degrees. Needless to
say, you will need to dress warmly if you are attending a sunrise
service outdoors.

STILL VERY DRY: In addition to being cold, the weekend will be dry.
The rain deficit for Birmingham will be well over 10 inches by Monday,
and the fire danger will remain high due to very low humidity levels
and a gusty northwest wind today. At this time it looks like our next
decent chance of rain will come late Tuesday night and Wednesday of
next week when a vigorous storm system will bring numerous showers and
thunderstorms. There might even be strong to severe storms involved if
the air can become unstable.

STORM SURVEY: Representatives from the National Weather Service in
Huntsville and Jackson County Emergency Management completed a survey
of damage from Tuesday evening's storms atop Sand Mountain in far
Northeast Alabama. Tornado damage has been found along a path from
approximately 3 miles east of Langston, to 1 mile southeast of
Macedonia. The tornado touched down periodically over a distance of 4
miles, with a maximum estimated wind speed of 95 mph. The tornado was
rated EF1.

THIS IS SPRING? Parts of northern New England reported over one foot
of snow yesterday and last night, knocking out power to more than
180,000 homes and businesses. Portland, Maine had 11.6 inches of snow,
tying the record for their fifth largest April snow. Heavy snow was
also a problem yesterday over the northern part of Michigan; the
community of Chassell reported 15 inches on the ground late last
night. Snow was also widespread across the Plains; Moundridge, Kansas
measured 7 inches of snow during the day. The unusually cold air
covering much of the continental U.S. now was over Alaska during the
month of March, when Juneau broke daily, monthly, and seasonal
snowfall records.

POSSIBLE DAMAGING FREEZE OVER THE WEEKEND: Our weather has taken a
turn to very un-April-like. In fact, it is not out of the question
that we could see the coldest temperature ever recorded in the month
of April in Central Alabama by Sunday morning and again Monday
morning. We are sticking to a 26 low for Sunday morning, although
some in and out clouds could hold that up a bit. A 26 low seems even
more certain for Monday morning. We will need to watch this very
closely. Some of the latest model data has temperatures as low as 22
for Sunday morning and similar temperatures for Monday morning. We
think that is a bit overdone.

However, it is important that precautionary measures be taken for
this unusual freeze so late in the season. Tender vegetation is in
real danger. Be sure to bring your pets indoors.

A very strong high pressure system (1053 millibars) is bulging down
from Central Canada bringing some very cold weather to a wide area.
There will be occasional disturbances rotating down in the upper air.
This could bring some imminent cloudiness at times over the next
couple of days. There is even a chance of some rain trying to push
inland along the Gulf Coast Saturday nights and Sunday. If that
happens, we believe it will be far to the south and not affect
Central and North Alabama.

EASTER SUNDAY: Warm clothing is definitely the order of the day.
After morning lows in the mid 20s, it will barely reach the mid 50s
during the afternoon. On Saturday, North Alabama highs may be in the
chilly 48 to 52 range with NW winds gusting over 20 mph at times.

THE EVER INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: When that powerful F5
tornado devastated the Smithfield area on the NW side of Birmingham
30 years ago yesterday, a pony became airborne. Later it was found
still alive, but stumbling around because debris had blinded him.
Amazingly, the pony gave birth to a new baby and it was immediately
named Tornado 77. Very heavy snow fell again overnight in parts of
Michigan, especially the Upper Peninsula, and in Maine. Coldest in
Alaska this morning was 20 below at Umiat. There was a 100-degree
contrast in temperature across the lower 48 states in the last 24
hours from 100 in Death Valley yesterday to an even zero this morning
at Grand Marais, Michigan and Wadena, Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: An action-packed walk with Little Miss
Molly this morning very early. I never know what to expect. As soon
as we walked out the back door, some neighbors were passing by on the
track. Fifty feet behind them was a friendly neighborhood dog that
voluntarily walks around the track with anybody just to keep him
company. When Molly saw that combination, she exploded and pulled me
up an embankment as fast as I could run. We never did catch up, but
she saw Brigette, her real good friend and also a Shih-tzu at the
upper end of the track. All of this action upset every dog along the
track. Sounded like a rumble. There was a rumpled front page of The
Birmingham News that was lying near the hedgerow. Molly approached it
with extreme caution with one front foot lifted like a bird dog. She
decided it was dangerous and backed off twice. The third approach she
got very close and I said, boo. She jumped straight up clearing the
ground. The majority owner fussed at me. Life goes on.

...Freezing Temperatures This Weekend...

Unusually cool weather is our headline for the next five days; quite a
contrast to the record warmth we experienced during the last half of
March. A deep upper air trough will form form over the eastern half of
the United States today, and that will open the door for Arctic air to
invade the Deep South as winter makes one more run at us. Even with a
good supply of sunshine today, many North Alabama communities will
fail to reach the 60 degree mark today. The air will be even colder
tomorrow over and over the Easter weekend, and we will have a good
potential for a freeze Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning. We are
forecasting 28 degrees Saturday morning, 26 Sunday morning, and 30
Monday morning. Of course, temperatures will vary from neighborhood to
neighborhood; it all depends on elevation, wind, and cloud cover.
Valleys should be a few degrees colder, while the ridges will be a
little warmer. But you will need to protect tender plants, flowers,
and other vegetation on all three mornings if they can be damaged by
freezing temperatures.
It is interesting to note that if we reach our forecast low of 26
degrees Easter Sunday morning, that will tie the record for the
coldest temperature recorded in Birmingham during the entire month of
April. And, remember weather records here go back to the 1880s. The
only time we have been as cold as 26 degrees during April was way back
on April 11, 1973.
DRY FOR A WHILE: The chilly air moving into the southern U.S. will be
very dry in the low levels, and despite a few cloudy periods tomorrow
we don't expect any rain through Monday of next week. Despite getting
some rain during the pre-dawn hours yesterday, we are still very dry,
and the National Weather Service has issued a "Red Flag Warning" for
Alabama, meaning the fire danger is high. Humidity levels today will
be 25 percent of less over much of the state. The current rain
deficiency for the 2007 in Birmingham is 9.46", and that figure will
be well over ten inches by early next week.
At this time it looks like the next good chance of rain around here
will come around the middle of next week, especially on Wednesday
April 11. In fact, the medium range computer guidance is suggesting
that we might have a setup for strong to severe thunderstorms with a
deep upper trough interacting with an increasingly unstable airmass at
that time.
THIS IS SPRING? The high yesterday in Chicago was only 32 degrees; in
Bismarck, North Dakota the high was a frigid 24 degrees. Garrison,
North Dakota reported a low of only one degree yesterday morning as
Arctic air continues to flow southward into the continental U.S.
Blizzard warnings were in effect last night for parts of northern
Michigan, where 3 to 6 inches of snow was likely with winds gusting to
50 mph at times. Winter storm warnings are in effect today for much of
New England, where additional snow amounts of 4 inches or more are
likely.

LATE SEASON FREEZE THIS WEEKEND: Big changes in Alabama weather.
Some of the best news is that almost all of the state got rain
overnight and there was widespread rejoicing to get rid of the
pollen. Of course, we desperately needed the rain anyway for
agriculture and lawns and gardens.

Now the big story is the much lower temperatures headed for Alabama.
This afternoon the cold front had already pushed into South Alabama
ending the rain in all sections. Temperatures will fall into the mid
30s tonight and Thursday night. A reinforcing supply of cooler air
will move in Friday and we may be in for a morning freeze both
Saturday and Sunday morning and possibly Monday morning. High
temperatures all the way through the weekend will be in the mid and
upper 50s. That is going to feel a lot different from so many 70s and
80s we have had in the last several weeks. The coldest morning will
probably be Easter Sunday. We are using 26 for the morning low. There
are places in Central Alabama where it will not get that cold—mainly
on the ridges. There are also some NE Alabama valleys that could be a
degree or so colder, so it is advised to protect tender plants on
those two mornings.

There will be one or two minor disturbances in the upper air
rotating through and this could bring some clouds at times Friday and
Saturday, but we believe there will be more sun than clouds.

POLLEN ERADICATOR: Looks like virtually all of Alabama got rain
overnight and in most areas it was enough to wash pollen off of cars,
decks and rooftops. Wide variation in the rainfall amounts. Two of
the heavier amounts were 1.40 inches at Blue Pond in Cherokee County
and 1.58 at Jackson Shoals in Talladega County. Numerous locations
got between 1/3 and ½ inch.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Temperatures were expected to drop as low as
the teens in the Great Smoky Mountains over the weekend. There could
even be a few snow showers on Friday. Cold spot in the lower 48 this
morning was Garrison, North Dakota with 1 above. It was 8 below in
Wainwright, Alaska. Getting that time of year where we look southward
to find the coldest temperatures in the world. It was 91 below zero
at Amundsen-Scott, Antarctica. A microburst occurred about 2:30 this
morning, producing winds from 70 to 80 mph and maybe higher, damaged
a subdivision in Hall County, Georgia. One home blown 15 feet off its
foundation. 35 homes had roof or siding damage. Numerous trees down.
It was 30 years ago today that a powerful F5 tornado moved across NW
Birmingham known as the Smithfield Tornado. It was moving forward at
60 mph. Almost 50 homes were completely destroyed and 22 persons were
killed. That big high pressure system over Central Canada is a very
strong 1050 MB.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A very mixed up night in our little
abode due to active weather. When that happens, Little Miss Molly
always gets the short end of the stick. Not a single ballgame with
her last night, because I was constantly working weather. She is a
resilient little girl. Late in the night she played her own ballgame.
It sounded like a World Series final. She would sling a ball across
the room and then chase it down before it hit the opposite wall. I
went to bed at 4:30 a.m., took a brief walk outside before I did. The
birds were happy as a lark. Life goes on....

...A Sharp Change To Cooler Weather...

Blackberry winter is a mainly Southern term used to describe a brief
period of cold weather that coincides with the time the blackberries
are in bloom, usually in April or May. I guess our blackberry winter
will come over the Easter weekend as the gates to the Yukon will open
up in coming days. The first phase of the cool down will arrive today;
a strong northwest wind will usher in a much cooler airmass, and most
communities will fail to reach the 70 degree mark today despite the
return of sunshine. And, by daybreak tomorrow, we expect temperatures
to drop into the mid 30s as far south as Birmingham.

Another shot of colder air rolls in here tomorrow, and that will push
highs down into the cool 50s Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Mornings
will remain cold, with early morning readings in the low to mid 30s.
We still believe the best chance for a widespread freeze will come
early Easter Sunday morning. In our formal forecast we are using 31
for a forecast low early Sunday, but the colder valleys and protected
areas have a chance of reaching the mid 20s. Needless to say, you will
need to dress warmly if you are going to attend an outdoors Easter
sunrise service this year.

NEXT WEEK: A warming trend will begin early next week, and
temperatures should return to normal levels for early April by
mid-week. There is some suggestion of a chance of rain in the Tuesday
night/Wednesday time frame, but for now it does not look like a major
rain event, which is unfortunate since our rainfall deficit will be
over ten inches by then.

THIRTY YEARS AGO TODAY: An F5 tornado tore through the northern part
of Birmingham, and is usually called the "Smithfield Tornado"; named
after the area which received the greatest damage: Smithfield Estates.
The tornado began around 3 pm, 4 miles northwest of Birmingham near
U.S. Highway 78, and then traveled northeast for 15 miles at 60 mph,
crossing Interstate 65. At it's widest point, the tornado was 3/4 of a
mile wide. Over 150 homes were damaged with almost 50 completely
destroyed. A total of 22 people were killed with over 130 injured.
This one storm alone caused over $25 million in damage ($83 million in
today dollars). There were six other tornadoes on this day including
five F2 tornadoes and an F3 tornado across North and Central Alabama.
About that same time, Southern Airways Flight 242, a DC-9 jet with 82
people on board crash landed on Georgia Highway 381 in the small
northwest Georgia community of New Hope. A total of 63 passengers and
crew members died, along with 9 people on the ground as the plane
skidded along the highway. The aircraft, enroute from Huntsville to
Atlanta, ran into a severe thunderstorm near Rome, Georgia at about
17,000 feet. Power was lost in both engines after tremendous amounts
of hail and rain were ingested into the engines. The engines could not
be restarted after being severely damaged and the crew had to attempt
an emergency landing on the highway. (thanks to NWS and Bill Murray
for these notes).

A MAJOR COOL DOWN LOOMS: A lot going on today, so we will try to be
scarce with words. Our first concern is some showers and
thunderstorms tonight. A few of those could be strong to severe. The
Storm Prediction Center has nearly the NW half of the state as far
south as Birmingham under a Slight Risk for tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch
for part of North Alabama from about Birmingham northward until 9:00
o'clock tonight. It includes the greater Birmingham area.

We must tell you about a high pressure area now centered over
Southern Canada where the pressure has built up to 1053 MB.
Translation: a lot of wintertime highs are not that strong. This is a
major push of colder air and it will bring Central Alabama some
temperatures in the low and mid 30s over the Easter weekend.

First we must deal with thunderstorms tonight. The main cold front
marking the leading edge of the colder air was over SE Missouri and
moving steadily toward the SE. The front will reach Central Alabama
before daybreak. Showers will end tomorrow morning and NW winds will
reach 12 to 25 mph tomorrow ushering in the colder air.

SNOW AND TORNADOES: Two major anniversaries for Alabama today. The
big super outbreak on April 3, 1974 when North Alabama was
devastated. Also on this date in 1987, a surprise heavy wet snow
caused lots of tree damage in the area. The Birmingham area received
5 to 7 inches of snow. The trees were completely green and azaleas
and dogwoods were in full blossom. It created an eerie sight.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center is having another
busy day. A Moderate Risk is posted for much of Arkansas, West
Tennessee, West and Central Kentucky northward into Missouri,
Illinois and Indiana. A Slight Risk extends all the way from NE Texas
to Cleveland and Detroit. An intense line of thunderstorms was moving
southward through Missouri, Southern Illinois and Ohio.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Yesterday I mentioned that I did not
let Little Miss Molly interfere with my weather duties. Just wanted
to assure the readers of that. I did not mean that I would stop the
Molly adventures. A great outpouring of Molly fan mail. We received
close to 70 e-mails and we appreciate every one. Every single one
urged a continuation. The three most energetic creatures I know of
are Little Miss Molly, the Energizer Bunny and Dennis Altizer and not
necessarily in that order. Dennis is our Music Minister at Huffman
Baptist Church. Little Miss Molly dragged me around the walking track
this morning so fast that my hips were hurting. However, I do not
mind. I only got to watch the last 17 minutes of the basketball game
last night and Molly pouted all the way through that because I would
not play ball. Life goes on—tedious at times....
