...A Beautiful Weekend...

GOOD MORNING: A fairly simple forecast greets us on what will be a beautiful fall weekend. In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a large trough of low pressure will dominate the eastern U.S. But at the surface, high pressure is to the north of us. The combination is giving us fine, cool weather. This will continue through Monday.

The high will be sliding east of Alabama by then, allowing a southeasterly wind flow. A trough will rotate through late on Tuesday, but moisture should be limited. We will mention a chance of showers, based simply of the strength of the trough. Reinforcing shots of cool air will arrive next weekend and it will be dry.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Good news is, you will get an extra hour of sleep tonight as Daylight Saving Time comes to a close at 2 a.m. local time. So don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before
retiring tonight, or you will miss that opportunity and be early to church!

TRICK OR TREAT WEATHER: Some folks will be our trick or treating or attending fall festivals at local churches. It will be a perfect fall evening, with clear skies and cool temperatures. Readings will start off around 60 degrees and fall into the upper 40s by late evening. More of the same for Monday night, with mainly clear skies and slightly warmer temperatures.

TROPICS: Beta continues over the far southwestern Caribbean Sea this morning, about 120 miles east of the coast of Nicaragua. It likely is a hurricane by now. It is moving slowly west and is expected to reach the northeastern coast of Nicaragua overnight tonight. It should track westward over the next several days, remaining over land and diminishing into a tropical depression as it moves over Honduras and toward Guatemala. Heavy rains will cause flooding.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: KNBC Newsman Chuck Henry from Los Angeles nearly lost his life as he covered the raging California Wildfires. Waiting until the last second to evacuate as a wall of flames bore down on him, he found that his van would not start. He was rescued by firefighters.

...Dry Through The Weekend...

A passing disturbance aloft could bring a few scattered clouds to Alabama
today, but we still expect ample sunshine with highs up in the mid 60s. The
beautiful fall weather stays in place through the weekend with pleasant days
and chilly nights. Temperatures will remain below normal values for late
October in Alabama as a reinforcing shot of cool air slips in here tonight
following the upper impulse.

NEXT WEEK: It beginning to look like wet weather will be a possibility by
Monday night and Tuesday of next week as a disturbance aloft approaches
Alabama from the west. For many Alabama communities, today is the 19th day
in a row without measurable precipitation, so a little rain would be quite
welcomed by most folks.

TROPICS: A strong disturbance over the far southwest Caribbean became
tropical storm twenty six last night. It could become tropical storm Beta
today; it should move into Nicaragua by tomorrow night or Friday where
serious flooding will be possible.

Another tropical wave will move into the eastern Caribbean today, and that
one also has the potential to become a tropical depression in a day or so.
Sea surface temperatures have cooled in the Gulf of Mexico, which means a
major tropical system is very unlikely for the central Gulf coast.

RECORD COLD: Greenwood, MS dropped to 29 degrees yesterday morning, beating
the old record of 30 set 50 years ago in 1955. Tallahassee, FL also
established a new record low with 33 degrees and scattered frost.

FALL BACK: We gain one hour of sleep this weekend as we go back to standard
time. Clocks will need to be turned back one hour before you go to bed
Saturday night.

...Our Weather Stays Dry And Cool...

A cool and dry weather pattern will set up across Alabama for the
foreseeable future. After a frosty start this morning, the mercury should
reach the mid 60s this afternoon with ample sunshine and very low humidity.
Tonight will be another cold one, with lows early tomorrow in the 35 to 39
degree range for most places.

Temperatures will moderate only slightly during the next five days,
remaining below normal for late October. And, the weather remains very dry.
We see no chance of any really significant rain for the rest of the month.

WEEKEND PEEK: Looks nice, with a partly to mostly sunny sky both days and
highs mostly in the upper 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Long range model data suggests another major upper air through
will carve out over the eastern third of the nation early next week, and
should bring another shot of cold air down this way in 6 to 7 days. Looks
like this could be the first widespread freeze of the season toward the
middle of next week. If this happens, it will a little early this year; the
average date of the first freeze here is November 8.

TROPICS: We are watching an area of disturbed weather in the southwest
Caribbean; there is some potential for development in that region in coming
days. If a tropical storm happens to form, the name would be "Beta", and it
should not be a threat to the central Gulf coast due to the persistent upper
air trough over the eastern U.S.

DIGGING OUT: The community of Eldred, PA reported 10 inches of heavy, wet
snow yesterday. About 10,000 people had no power across Pennsylvania due to
the snow yesterday. In Boston, winds gusted to 52 mph as the fierce
nor'easter rolled up the coast.

NO MORE SHIRT-SLEEVE WEATHER: The favor low temperature around
Alabama this morning was 40. That is what it was in Birmingham, Calera,
Prattville, Wedowee, Mobile, Montgomery, Helena and Tuscaloosa. In some
places in North Alabama it was closer to freezing. A few examples:

31 in Hamilton
34 in Cottondale
35 in Rock Mills
36 in Jasper
37 in Dora and Livingston
38 in Fayette

Where clouds persisted, it was only in the 50s this afternoon. Some
South Alabama places had 60s.

Again tonight, the low temperatures will depend on cloud cover and
how much the wind backs off. We are sticking to our 34 as the average low
across Central Alabama. There should be some scattered frost by morning In
the clear areas with little wind. There will probably be quite a variation
in tonight's lows in the valleys and on the ridges.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Not again! The National Hurricane Center says
there is a new area of nervous weather over the SW Caribbean and that slow
development is possible. A second disturbed area was 550 miles east of the
Southern Windward Islands. Winds upstairs are not favorable at this time but
it will be watched. The next two names on the Greek alphabet are Beta and
Gamma. Beyond that there are such names as Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta,
Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi and Omicron. Just mentioning this for the fun of it. We
will, of course, not have to use all those names but the next two are
possible.

Meanwhile Wilma, the last name on the regular list, was racing NE
across the open Atlantic this afternoon at a forward speed near 60 mph!
Amazing! She was beginning to lose her tropical personality. Only the whales
will get a migraine.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: More heavy rain overnight where it was not
needed...well over one inch in New York City...a very raw day in New England
with continuous rain and NE winds 40 to 50 mph...parts of the North Carolina
mountains may get as much as 5 inches of snow today...this morning, there
was one inch on the ground at Beech Mountain, N.C., and the temperature fell
to 18 atop both Mt. LeConte, in the Smoky Mountains and Mt. Mitchell,
N.C.,...it was 17 at Broken Bow, Nebraska and 10 in Anaktuvuk, Alaska..not a
good day to hang out the wash atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire where it
was near 20 with zero visibility in snow and blowing snow with winds gusting
to 92 mph!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor Little Miss Molly. She has had a
nerve-wracking day. With her human mommy home from the hospital two people
doing the rehab came this morning at different times. Molly automatically
thinks that everyone who rings the doorbell are here to see and play with
her. She meets them at the door and goes into a frenzy. I had to bring her
in my office and shut the door. Her blood pressure must have gone through
the roof. She was up on my desk whining and woofing at me-demanding to be
let out. She stepped on my calculator and overturned it. That scared her to
death. Did a lot of cuddling and consoling after everyone left. Life goes
on.

...Some Frost Is Likely Late Tonight...

The coolest air so far this fall season will continue to flow into Alabama
today. Clouds should cover about the northern third of the state during the
day, and where those clouds hang tough the mercury will have a hard time
getting out of the 40s. The best chance of sunshine will be south of I-20,
but even there highs will be in the mid to upper 50s.

Tonight, as the clouds depart and the wind dies down, the stage is set for
the first widespread frost of the season. By early tomorrow, we project an
average low of 34 degrees. The actual range should be from near 30 for the
colder valleys to near 39 on the ridge tops. Thursday morning should be
almost as cold.

We expect ample sunshine tomorrow and Thursday with highs in the 60s. Still
no sign of any big rain event around here for at least the next seven days;
for some Alabama communities today will be the 18th day in a row with no
measurable rain. Looks like we will have to wait until November before we
get wet again.

WILMA LIVES ON: Actually hurricane Wilma will be making a transformation to
a complex, hybrid storm that will bring lots of rain, snow, and wind to the
northeast U.S. today and tonight. The northern Appalachians could see one to
two feet of snow, mostly in elevations over 1,500 feet. This will be one of
their biggest autumn snows on record. And, coastal cities like New York City
and Boston will see winds gusting to near hurricane force along with a
driving rain.

TROPICS: The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet now and tropical
storm formation is not expected through mid-week. The season runs through
the end of November, and if there is another tropical storm the name will be
"Beta".

GOODBYE TO WILMA: And, it is about time. Wilma had no direct impact
on Alabama but she was a major event for Florida. More about that later.

OUR COLDEST MORNING: We had the lowest temperatures since last
spring for most of the state this morning. We also had the first freezing
temperature and Black Creek, in NE Etowah County reported some scattered
light frost. Some of the lows:

32 at Meridianville (north of Huntsville)
33 at Little River Canyon
34 in Huntsville
35 at Mentone, Black Creek and atop Mt. Cheaha
36 in Pinson, Decatur and Cullman
37 in Birmingham, Fort Payne, Desoto State Park, Hayden,
and Gadsden
38 in Munford and Muscle Shoals
40 in Tuscaloosa
42 at Anniston Airport

MORE COLD AIR MOVING IN: Those north winds were brisk today and
afternoon temperatures only in the 50s sure let us know that autumn is now
here in a big way. Nights are going to be on the chilly side all week with
lows consistently in the 30s. Our coldest morning should be Wednesday, with
34, and some early morning frost. Tonight, the lows will depend on the cloud
cover and wind. Clouds will be in and out during the night and again
tomorrow. After that, mostly sunshine.

WILMA: She made landfall early this morning on the SW coast of
Florida and moved quickly across the south part of the state. She passed
directly across West Palm Beach and out into the Atlantic. Damage is going
to be major because winds exceeded 100 mph all across the area. The
strongest wind gust we have noted so far was 134 mph recorded by National
Park personnel at Fort Jefferson in the lower Florida Keys. At one time, 40
percent of Key West was under water due to the storm surge as estimated by
the chief of police.

Wilma will now proceed northward and absorbing the remains of outlaw
Tropical Storm Alpha. All of that, interacting with another disturbance over
the Northeast may cause several inches of snow from West Virginia into
Vermont and including Northern New York State. 7 inches or more in some
areas.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: 93 in Indio, Calif., was the USA hot spot
Sunday...coldest this morning was 12 in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Now, that is a
real western name!...more than 5 inches of rain had already fallen before
daybreak in Orlando and 6 inches in Sarasota County...much more since that
time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had my alarm set for 4:30 this
morning and Little Miss Molly was sleeping at the foot of my bed. She
reacted with a long moan and groan. I slipped out the bedroom door but she
was right behind me...I took her out briefly and again just before sunrise
on out longer walk...the Old Crow Motel stood out sharp and clear
backdropped by the first hint of daybreak. Nice chill in the air...we both
love cold weather...sure am glad none of you can hear Molly and I talk on
our walks...this morning I was even singing to her, at times trying to sing
a little opera. When I did that, she looked back with a real puzzled look. I
sure wish I could get a transcript of Molly's little brain (can't be more
than quarter-sized) and see what she thinks of me. I am sure she thinks I am
crazy. But she is too so we make quite a pair. Besides, crazy people live 15
years longer...Molly was bubbling over when her human mommy got home from
the hospital this morning. Life goes on, through sunshine and hurricanes. We
love life!

...Chilly Monday...

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day across Central Alabama. Skies
were crystal clear and total sunshine allowed temperatures to uniformly warm
into the 70s. A cold front moved through the area overnight, accompanied by
a band of clouds. Skies will be mostly sunny this morning, with
stratocumulus clouds dotting the skies later. The north wind will be very
noticeable today, averaging 15 mph with higher gusts. Those northerly winds
will be ushering in cooler air and temperatures will struggle to make it out
of the 50s.

FROSTY MORNS AHEAD? Indications are that low clouds will move back across
the area overnight tonight, wrapping around low pressure over Ohio and West
Virginia. Fairly strong northerly winds will continue tonight, and the
combination of the clouds and the winds should prevent the formation of
widespread frost tonight. But if you have interests that are sensitive to
frost, monitor later forecasts in case the winds die down or clouds do not
develop. Lows tonight will drop into the upper 30s.

It looks like clouds will hang tough across the area tomorrow, and if they
do, highs will definitely remain in the 50s. Some spots up in northeast
Alabama could stay in the 40s all day. A biting northwest wind will add to
the uncomfortable nature of the day. The sky should clear tomorrow night
however, and it looks like we could experience a widespread frost by early
Wednesday morning with temperatures reaching the mid 30s. Wednesday and
Thursday will feature more in the way of sunshine with milder temperatures.

STILL DRY: At this point we still see no significant chance of rain for
Alabama for the next seven days. For some Alabama communities, today is the
17th day in a row with no measurable rain.

TROPICS: Hurricane Wilma made landfall early this morning on the southwest
coast of Florida south of Naples. A storm surge of up to 18 feet was
expected in the area from Marco Island south through Everglades City. A
storm surge of up to 8 feet is expected in the keys. Wilma intensified to
category three status late last evening and will bring hurricane force winds
to much of South Florida. Tropical depression Alpha is moving north and
will be absorbed by Wilma.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Mitch becomes a hurricane in the Caribbean south of
Jamaica and begins to intensify rapidly. During a 24 hour period, its
central pressure dropped 52 millibars, to 924 millibars.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It is a gorgeous October day across Alabama on this Sunday
afternoon. Crystal clear blue skies and cool temperatures in the upper 60s
to lower 70s are making for a refreshing day outdoors. High clouds which
are the outflow from Hurricane Wilma are edging into Southeast Alabama. And
to the northwest, clouds are beginning to invade northwestern sections of
the state ahead of another cold front.

SHORT TERM (TONIGHT-MONDAY): Low clouds associated with the front will
move across the area. There may also be a few sprinkles associated with the
system, but rainfall amounts will be negligible. Northerly winds will stay
up just a bit tonight, averaging 10 mph, helping to keep temperatures up
just a bit and preventing widespread frost. Most lows will be around 40
degrees tonight, with a few 30s in the normally colder locations. Dewpoints
will drop back into the lower 30s by morning. A big upper trough will set
up shop over Alabama tomorrow, and with a couple of disturbance rotating
across the area, clouds will be around along with a chance of a sprinkle,
although some sun will be present also.

Temperatures tomorrow will struggle to get out of the 50s in most locations
with a brisk north wind that will average 15 mph.

THROUGH MIDWEEK... A big upper low sets up over the Ohio Valley, giving
periods of cloudiness and maybe even a few sprinkles on Tuesday. The low
should begin to rotate out to the northeast, moving far enough away to allow
sunshine to predominate again by Wednesday. Correspondingly, temperatures
will start a deliberate rise also.

...AND BEYOND... Thursday looks to be a nice day with sunshine and cool
temperatures. The GFS model hints at the development of an upper level low
over the Southeast and Alabama by Friday. This could bring back periods of
cloudiness and a few sprinkles.

TROPICS: Hurricane Wilma is accelerating northeastward this afternoon,
heading toward a rendezvous with Southwest Florida. The category two
hurricane may intensify enough to be a category three storm at landfall
Monday morning, but it is moving into an area of increasing wind shear and
could weaken a bit just as well. Tropical Depression Alpha is poised to
emerge over the open water north of Hispaniola.

ON THIS DATE IN 1920: Famed research meteorologist Theodore Fujita, was
born on this date in Kitakyushu City, Japan Fujita, known as "Mr. Tornado"
after developing the international standard for measuring tornado severity,
also discovered microbursts - sudden, severe downdrafts that can result in
150 mph winds on or near the ground - after studying the starburst patterns
of trees uprooted by tornadoes.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: In California, where skies were obscured from smoke
from massive forest fires, people glancing at the sun were startled to see
blotches on the massive star. Those black patches were sunspots. The
sunspots cause solar flares, which can disrupt communications on Earth.
They also cause displays of the aurora borealis, or northern lights.
