...Storms Growing...

Showers and thunderstorms formed early this morning in a moist,
slightly unstable environment across Central and Northwest Alabama.
One storm in Northeast Jefferson County just after 7 a.m, dumped 0.96
inches on J.B. in just twenty five minutes. Storms have been active
over Northwest Alabama at this writing and are growing in coverage and
intensity over western sections at late morning. One healthy storm
formed over Southwest Jefferson County around 9:30 and was still
strong as it passed the Leeds/Moody area just before lunch.

THIS AFTERNOON: A weak trough seems to be aligned across North
Central Alabama this afternoon. Thunderstorms will continue to fire
and grow in intensity as they head generally east or east northeast
through the day. Coverage will be fairly good overall and intensity
will be on the heavy side from time to time across Central sections.
Watch out for copious lightning, some winds gusting to 40 mph and
torrential rains. Highs will struggle to get very far into the 80s,
especially in rain areas.

TONIGHT: A pair of disturbance are discernible on satellite imagery
back to our west over Northeast Texas and Arkansas. These will be
rotating east and northeast later tonight, likely triggering
additional bouts of showers and storms. It will be muggy overnight,
with lows around 70 degrees.

SUNDAY: The moist atmosphere will still be place over Alabama
tomorrow with more disturbances rotating through the flow. This means
more rounds of showers and storms, with some folks picking up some
pretty decent shots of rain. Once again, fairly abundant cloud cover
should hold temperatures back.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks a lot like the weekend in the morning GFS
model run. It tries to concentrate the showers and storms over the
Tennessee Valley Tuesday and Wednesday. We will call for a fairly
typical summertime patter of scattered afternoon and evening storms
through the remainder of the week.

MAIN EVENTON THIS DATE IN 1988: The policy of the National Park
Service had been to let naturally occurring fires in Yellowstone
National Park burn. Fires that were started by lightning in June were
allowed to burn until this date in 1988. By that time though, the
fires were out of control, and would burn over one millions acres
before they were extinguished in November. The cost of fighting the
fires was over $120 million.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Rescuers search for victims and survivors of
flash flooding from the night before in Tennessee. The training
thunderstorms dumped 7 inches of rain in 6 hours in and around
Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. At least two people were killed. Bridges
were washed out and vehicles swept away.

...More Rain, Please...

The nearly one inch of rain that fell at the Birmingham Airport
yesterday was a great thing. Many folks have been enjoying similar
doses of that great thing that we call rainfall. Something that we
might have taken for granted before, but we now look for with great
anticipation. We are at least holding our own against the drought in
the short run and hopefully the weekend will put another couple of
inches in many of the rain buckets across North and Central Alabama.

TODAY AND TONIGHT: Disturbances are lined up to the west of Alabama
like trains on a track. One rotated through the state during the
overnight accompanied by an area of showers. Rainfall amounts
overnight were generally light. Clouds will be fairly prominent
today, with just a smattering of sunshine at times. Another
disturbance will rotate across the area later today, bringing another
chance for showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures should generally
make the middle 80s, although if clouds and rain hang tougher in some
areas, those locations may hold in the lower 80s again like yesterday
at Birmingham.

TOMORROW: It looks like we could see additional disturbances
working over the warm and moist atmosphere that is in place over
Alabama again on Sunday. This means additional rounds of showers and
storms. Again, clouds will be the rule rather than the exception and
highs will be in the 80s again. Rainfall amounts between now and
Sunday night will average around an inch, with luckier spots getting
two inches or perhaps even more.

NEXT WEEK: It looks like we will head back into a fairly typical
summertime pattern as we head into the new work week. The Bermuda
high will be over the Atlantic acting as a giant moisture pump as it
does during the summer, transporting humidity up into the Southeast.
Hard to discern the details, so we will broadbrush the forecast with
about a one in three chances of showers or storms at your location
each day. It looks like the main moisture axis could be just to our
west, so the favored location for rainfall may be over western
sections.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be quiet with no
tropical development expected through the coming week. One thing to
note: we have been looking at a persistent trough of low pressure
over the eastern United States for quite some time. This trough would
of course protect the U.S. from Cape Verde type storms, and we are
edging closer to that time of the season. Will the pattern shift
last through the heart of hurricane season? Hard to tell. If it
does, it would set up a steering pattern we would not want to see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1954: It seems like the Tri-States of Missouri,
Illinois and Indiana often do weather things together. Back on this
date in 1954, Illinois recorded its hottest temperature ever (117F) at
East St. Louis. Indiana recorded it hottest ever with 116F at
Collegeville. The Show-Me state of Missouri recorded its hottest
reading ever with 118F at Warsaw and Union.

WE NEED A LOT MORE RAIN: We have been sitting around with smiles on
our faces watching rain occur time and time again and slowly working
on our enormous drought problem. Despite all that, the rain deficit
is as large as we have seen in many, many years and it will take a
lot more rain events to even bring it close to normal. I still say,
when we say happy New Year next January, we will still be showing a
rain shortage. Our best hope will be to have a couple of tropical
depressions form in the Gulf of Mexico this hurricane season and move
ashore and slowly move toward the north. A tropical depression can
almost produce as much rain as a tropical storm or hurricane. The big
downside to that is that everybody along the Gulf Coast will get
extremely nervous for even a depression to form. They would fear
another possible Katrina. As bad as the drought is, it does not
compare with a Katrina or Ivan or Camille.

It is encouraging to note that the latest report from the U.S.
Drought Monitor shows that the Exceptional Drought area in Alabama
has shrunk because of the recent rains. Last week it extended all the
way down to Livingston, Marion, Clanton and Talladega. It now only
goes as far south as the north part of Shelby and Talladega Counties.

THE NEAR FUTURE FOR ALABAMA: Still looks like some showers and
thunderstorms every day for at least the next 5 to 7 days. We may not
get as many of the big boomers that last late into the night, as we
have had recently. At least we will get scattered coverage, however,
and every little bit helps. A nice group of showers moved across
North and Central Alabama today and, by early afternoon, Fayette had
received 0.46 rain, SW Trussville had 0.71 and Birmingham Airport
nearly ½ inch. There is a big glob of showers and thunderstorms over
South Arkansas and North Louisiana. I do not like the way those are
moving more toward the SE.

TROPICAL WEATHER: No tropical development in the Atlantic for the
next few days. However, there was a tropical wave just east of the
Cape Verde Islands way, way out in the Atlantic with a fairly large
signature on satellite. Conditions are not favorable for it to do
much. Meanwhile, over in the West Pacific, Man-Yi moved over part of
Okinawa last night and was over open water between Okinawa and the
southwest-most island of Japan. It was producing 42-foot waves. It
should skirt the south coast of Japan and pass very near Tokyo very
early Sunday. By then, winds are projected to be down to 70 mph and
gusts to 85.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and thunderstorms every day.
Probably the better day for getting rain is Saturday and Sunday. They
should thin out Monday. Highs 89 to 91.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly loves to walk in wet
grass and light rain, but when the rain gets heavier, like it did on
our walk this morning, she did a 180, came close to jerking me off my
feet and headed home at breakneck speed—seemed like over 40 mph. She
immediately started to use the carpet to dry herself off. Still a lot
of mushrooms out there. Kay Mundy, a long-time reader from Anniston,
reminded us that she knew of a dog that had died recently from eating
a mushroom. They gave the dog hydrogen peroxide, but it was too late.
Beware of the mushrooms! I am glad that Kay reminded us that they
can, for sure, be dangerous. Life goes on, even with all the
pitfalls.....

...Showers and Storms Return...

It was almost impossible to find a decent shower across Alabama
yesterday, but moist air has returned this morning, and we will bring
a good chance of showers and thunderstorms back into the forecast
thanks to an upper air system west of the state. While we sure can't
rule out a few morning showers, the bulk of the showers and storms
will come this afternoon and this evening, when the air is most
unstable. The heavier storms will produce lots of lightning, and will
have the potential to produce localized areas of strong wind.

THE WEEKEND: The moist air is going nowhere, and with a weak
disturbance just to the west and a surface front to the north we will
maintain a good chance of scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms tomorrow and Sunday. While the sun will peek out at
times, the sky will be generally cloudy this weekend with afternoon
highs in the 87 to 91 degree range. Average rainfall totals between
now and Sunday night will be in the one to two inch range, but some
neighborhoods might get more.

NEXT WEEK: At this point it looks like the weather next week will
feature some typical mid-summer weather, with hot humid days and the
daily chance of a passing afternoon shower or storm in a few spots.
Afternoon highs will be close to normal levels for mid-July, mostly in
the low 90s. There might be a few days with enhanced coverage of
showers and storms, but there isn't much skill in trying to identify
those days so far in advance.

WE STILL NEED RAIN: Rain deficits for the year include 17.95" at
Birmingham, 15.13" at Montgomery, 20.42" at Anniston, and 20.86" at
Tuscaloosa. Despite the recent rain, the majority of North-Central
Alabama soil remains very dry with soil moisture percentiles in the 10
percent or lower of normal range. The worst agricultural impacts are
especially being felt within the corn crops, with the USDA reporting
87 percent of the Alabama corn crop in poor, or very poor condition.
The fire danger remains high across much of Alabama.

SUPER TYPHOON: The storm called Man-Yi moved over Okinawa last night,
producing major flooding and wind damage. Sustained winds were near
140 mph at the time of landfall; Man-Yi is now moving toward the main
islands of Japan. It is currently predicted to come close to Kyushu
tomorrow morning before turning eastward and weakening, brushing close
to Tokyo on Monday.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day along the
coast through Sunday, with the daily chance of a few scattered showers
and storms. The high along the immediate coast will be in the 88 to 91
degree range.

ROAMING: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 118 degrees. Coldest spot yesterday morning was Burgess Junction,
WY with 37. Fort Smith, Arkansas was soaked with 1.18".

MORE STORMS ARRIVE TOMORROW: As much as we still need rain, it was
nice to get a one-day break featuring lower humidity and cooler
mornings. Up in North Alabama, the temperature dropped all the way
down to 61 at daybreak at DeSoto State Park and Russell Cave National
Monument. It was 63 at Meridianville and 64 in Bankhead National
Forest, Crossville and Cullman.

Give credit for all of this to a cool front that is coming to a halt
somewhere in Central Alabama. We cannot say exactly where. Could be
around Peach Park in Clanton. It will sit there overnight and then
start slowly moving back north starting tomorrow. Naturally, it will
bring moist air with it and we will go right back into a shower and
thunderstorm pattern later tomorrow and on through the weekend.
Indeed, it looks like the mathematical chance of any one community
getting wet Friday and Saturday and maybe Sunday is rather good. It
is likely that a good chunk of Central Alabama will get about 1.50
inches of rain over the next few days and maybe more.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic Basin is quiet. In the West Pacific,
a powerful typhoon named Man-Yi was kicking up 38-foot waves. It is
projected to pass near Naha, Okinawa late today Alabama time. By
early Friday, sustained winds are projected to be 150 mph with gusts
to 185. The track forecast carries it along the southern edge of the
Japanese islands and passing just north of Tokyo Sunday morning. My
wife, Judy, has warm memories of Okinawa. Her family was stationed
there about 18 months with her dad being in the Air Force. Judy was
employed by KSAB Christian radio, a 50,000-watt station that also
reached Japan and Taiwan. She was on the air at times doing
children's programming. She graduated from high school on Okinawa.

AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will become more
noticeable Friday afternoon with a good chance Saturday and Sunday,
but only a slight chance Monday. Highs between 89 and 92. The water
temperature is very warm—85 to 87.

FOCUS ON OKLAHOMA CITY: I guess we could amend the old saying, to
where it would read, "All is fair in love, war and weather." There
are the haves and have nots. As my friend, Snuffy Smith, would say,
"I can't reckymember" Oklahoma and Texas getting so much rain. As of
this morning, Oklahoma City had received 35.07 inches this year—an
amazing surplus of over 15 inches. Last year at this time, they only
had 14.67. Elsewhere around our great nation, New York City has
received 9 inches of rain in less than 6 weeks and now show a 9-inch
surplus for the year. A nice chilly 44 this morning on Mt. LeConte in
the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. National lows included 41 at
Wakefield, Michigan and 32 at Barrow, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Driving all the way across Deerfoot
Parkway this morning, a beautiful drive. The ridges and valleys are
lush green again, as if we did not have a drought. Molly's walking
track has also greened up real good. There has been a proliferation
of little mushrooms (or toadstools, as we call them in Havana
Junction). I have tried to make sure Molly does not gobble one up.
She apparently thinks they are puppy-sized pancakes or moon pies.
But, I have always heard that some types could be poison. It will not
be long until Molly gets another haircut. She is like me, hot
natured, and when we get back off of a fast afternoon walk, she looks
for the tile floor to stretch out where it is cooler. Life goes on.....

...Sunshine Returns in Full Force...

Considerably drier air has moved into North Alabama this morning, and
accordingly we expect most communities to be rain-free today. And,
with ample sunshine and the drier air, temperatures will rise quickly
today. We figure most places will see a high today somewhere between
92 and 96 degrees. But, on the positive side, dewpoints and humidity
values will be much lower today making the afternoon heat a little
more tolerable. Any showers and storms this afternoon should be
confined to the southern half of Alabama.

MOISTURE RETURNS QUICKLY: Moist air moves northward tonight, and we
will bring back the chance of a few passing showers or storms tomorrow
as an upper disturbance approaches from the west, and another surface
front from the north. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow
is about one in three.

OUR WEEKEND: Looks like the next surface front won't have enough
southward push to make it into Alabama, so we should be in muggy air
Saturday and Sunday with a chance of scattered showers and storms both
days, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. There will be
some decent intervals of sunshine along the way, and afternoon highs
will be generally between 88 and 92. This pattern will continue into
the first half of next week.

JULY TORNADO WARNINGS: Interesting to note that we have had tornado
warnings for two consecutive days here in Alabama; on Tuesday night a
tornado warning was issued for Lawrence County up in the Tennessee
Valley of North Alabama, and last a tornado warning was issued for
Baldwin County, near the Gulf coast. While Doppler Radar velocity
signatures were fairly impressive on both storms for a brief time, no
major damage was reported from either storm. Tornadoes are very rare
in Alabama in the summer months due to light wind fields at the
surface and aloft. About the only time we have a significant tornado
event this time of the year is when a decaying tropical system moves
this way from the Gulf of Mexico.

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge a few scattered showers and
storms along the Gulf coast through the weekend, and we expect about 4
to 7 hours of sunshine on a daily basis in the area from Panama City
westward to Gulf Shores. The sea surface temperature (SST) at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a very warm 87 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, but in the western Pacific
Typhoon Man-Yi has strengthened into a Category Four storm with
maximum sustained winds of 212 kilometers per hour (132 miles an hour)
in the Pacific Ocean as it heads for Okinawa. This major system has
the potential to produce loss of life and very significant property
damage.

A BREAK IN THE HUMIDITY: Sure has been July-ish across Alabama for
several days due to the increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms. Have not heard a single complaint about all of the
showers and storms. Everyone is wearing a big smile on their face. We
have had good rain coverage for the last several days, including the
last 24 hours. We have a long list of rain measurements on the ABC
33/40 weather blog—way too numerous to list here.

I did want to mention one special rain report. It is from the Vigo
community east of Piedmont in NE Alabama. They received 1.05 inches
of rain in the last 24 hours. That is the first time in all of 2007
that they got over an inch of rain in one event.

Up in NW Alabama, Muscle Shoals has received over 6 inches of rain
just so far in July. Not far away, we want to mention this statistic
to snatch us back to reality that we are still in a major drought.
Figures released today by the National Weather Service in Huntsville
indicate that Huntsville still has a rainfall deficiency of 51.50
inches since January of 2005. That means in only two and one-half
years they have missed out on a full year's supply of rain.

A front was pushing toward Alabama this afternoon. It will transport
drier air into the state tonight and tomorrow. It appears the front
will push down into Central Alabama before stalling. Across North-
Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston area
and northward, you will feel a distinct drop in the humidity
tomorrow. Nights will be about 5 degrees cooler and we have omitted
any mention of showers for tomorrow. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms will return later Friday and through the weekend.

BEACH WEATHER: The Alabama/NW Florida coast will not be completely
free of showers over the next several days, although they will thin
out considerably Thursday. High temperatures will range between 88
and 92. No threat of tropical development.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Central Utah wildfire is beyond
imagination. It is, by far, the biggest fire in Utah history. It has
now burned 514 square miles. An interesting situation in the Pacific
NW yesterday. It was 102 in Portland, but the locals could look
upward to Mt. Hood east of Portland still covered with snow. The
severe heat has backed off in the desert. It was 103 in Phoenix and
106 in Las Vegas. Extremes in the last 24 hours, included 119 in
Death Valley and 37 this morning in Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another busy night last night and no
time to play with my little 9-pound boss. Somehow she senses that and
takes care of the situation herself. At 10:30 p.m., she embarked on a
wild ballgame. She had about 5 balls in the middle of the floor. She
would grab one and go at breakneck speed through the house, running
so fast that her tail was sticking out straight. She would bring that
ball back to the pile, grab another and repeat. She was even having
more fun than our own Bill Murray, who was holed up in a Holiday Inn
Express in the resort mountain town of Park City, Utah with plenty of
pizza and shrimp and watching the All-Star Game. Bill is the world's
number one baseball fan—possibly second to Molly. Life goes on and it
is clearly more enjoyable having my little pal as a member of my
family. I think she knows it......

...A Very Muggy Airmass Hangs Over Alabama...

Not much change in the Alabama weather situation for today; the
combination of abundant low level moisture and an upper air wave to
the west should bring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms;
great news for a state where many communities are still 15 to 20
inches behind on rain for the year. Birmingham's rain deficit is now
17.68".

As usual, most of the showers and storms will come during the heat of
the afternoon when the air is most unstable, but we sure can't rule
out a few morning showers along old outflow boundaries from last
night's storms. Additional rain amounts of one-half inch are likely
during the next 12 hours, but some spots will see more from the
stronger storms. And, like yesterday, some of the storms could produce
some hail, and they have the potential for wet microbursts, small
areas of damaging straight line winds that occur for only a very brief
period of time. According to the
definition, damage from a wet microburst is in an area 2.5 miles in
diameter or smaller.

A DRY DAY TOMORROW: Drier air will flow into the northern half of
Alabama tonight, which rarely happens in July, but we will go ahead
and buy into this scenario and drop the chance of rain for tomorrow.
It should be a partly to mostly sunny day with a high in the low 90s,
along with lower humidity values. Any showers tomorrow should be
confined to the southern half of the state.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Moisture will flow northward again tomorrow
night, and we will bring back the chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms on Friday as another front approaches from the north.
Lots of debate on just how far this front will go, but for now I think
the safest forecast is to maintain a chance of scattered showers and
storms over the weekend. It could be that the best coverage of
thunderstorms on Saturday will be south of Birmingham, but moist air
will surge northward again by Saturday night and Sunday. Afternoon
highs over the weekend should be in the 89 to 93 degree range for most
communities, and as usual the best chance of a passing thunderstorm
will come during the afternoon and evening hours.

TUESDAY'S STORMS: Severe thunderstorms across Alabama yesterday downed
trees and power lines near Steele in St. Clair County, Linden in
Marengo County, and near White Hall in Lowndes County. Rain totals
included 1.15" at Ashville, 1.11" at Martin Dam, 1.05" in the
northeast part of Trussville at J.B. Elliott's place, .92" at Fort
Payne, and .87" at Black Creek, which is in the northeast part of
Etowah County between Gadsden and Collinsville. We note that the ABC
33/40 Weather Watcher in Morris, Joe Spears, reports no rain
yesterday, and only a trace since Saturday despite all of the active
showers and storms around the state.

EXTREMES: The hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley,
CA with 119 degrees. The coldest yesterday morning was 37 at
Deadhorse, Alaska and Stanley, Idaho.

================================================

GOOD CHANCE OF STORMS AGAIN WEDNESDAY: We cannot deny that we are
still in a serious drought over the entire state, but the increasing
amount of rain recently has gotten everyone in a good mood and
wishing for more.

And more is coming. Around ½ inch or more fell in the Florence/
Decatur/Huntsville area already today. Based on radar, there were
indications of over 1 inch in the extreme NW. Most of the showers and
thunderstorms today have been over the north half of the state and
they were increasing again this afternoon over West Alabama and
moving generally eastward.

We will maintain a good chance of showers and thunderstorms again
Wednesday. Some of those will produce locally heavy rain. Another
front in the central part of the country is hinting that it would
like to come for a visit. It is possible it could reach extreme North
Alabama by Thursday morning and push a little further southward to
Central Alabama, then stall in the center part of the state on Saturday.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? We think showers and storms will be much fewer
in number Thursday, only to increase some again Friday and Saturday.
There is still a good chance that North and Central Alabama could
receive more than 2 inches of additional rain by the time the weekend
gets here.

Already topsoil moisture is improving across the state, as well as
pasture and rangeland. New grass is growing in most pastures and the
livestock is happy as can be.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The oven-like heat in the Desert Southwest has
baked off some. For example, it was 110 in Las Vegas yesterday and
will be about 106 this afternoon in Phoenix. The hottest was 121
Monday in Death Valley. Incidentally, today is the 94th anniversary
of the hottest ever recorded in the USA, which was also in Death
Valley—an unbearable 134. Coolest spot around the USA this morning
was 39 in Stanley, Idaho.

AT THE BEACH: For the next several days, highs should be 90 to 92.
There is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, only a
few on Thursday, but increasing again Friday and Saturday. The
Tropics are quiet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My apology for omitting the Little Miss
Molly story yesterday. I ran completely out of space. A number of our
readers let me know that and I appreciate their interest. Did not get
to spend much time with the little girl yesterday because of the
thunderstorms. That meant she spent much of the afternoon under the
bed. When we took our morning walk today, it felt like a sauna bath
instead of the Sahara. She loves to walk in wet grass and her legs
are so short that by the time she gets home, even her belly is
dripping wet. She comes in the back door and heads for the carpet in
the living area sliding round and round trying to dry herself off.
She is a riot to watch. Last night I had a long forehead-to-forehead
talk with her, complete with belly rubs. She looked me right in the
eye like she understood every word. I believe she did. Life goes on....

...A Very Muggy Airmass Hangs Over Alabama...

A blanket of very moist, muggy air hangs over Alabama this morning,
and promises to aid in the process of more showers and thunderstorms
forming across the state. While a morning shower is possible, the most
numerous ones will come during the afternoon and evening hours. Like
yesterday, some neighborhoods could see over one inch of rain from the
stronger storms with plenty of dangerous cloud to ground lightning and
gusty winds.

MUGGY DAYS: We really don't see much of an airmass change all the way
through Friday, so we will have some chance of showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis. We figure the best coverage of them
will come today, and then again on Thursday, when a surface front will
move down to near the Alabama/Tennessee line and become stationary.
Most Alabama communities have a great chance of seeing one to two
inches of rain between today and Friday. Because of the clouds and
showers, temperatures should generally be a little below normal for
mid summer during the next several days. I doubt if anyone will
complain about that.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Another front will approach from the north on
Saturday, so we will maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms
as the weekend begins. The GFS (our primary medium range computer
model) is trying to bring some drier air down here from the north on
Sunday and Monday, but cold fronts have a very hard pressing into
Alabama in mid-July. So, for now will still mention a chance of a few
scattered storms on Sunday, but they could be more numerous south of
Birmingham.

TOPIC: TROPICS: While the Atlantic basin, a tropical depression has
formed in the eastern Pacific, well off the western coast of Mexico.
Tropical Depression 4-E is near latitude 17.5 N, 120.0 W, and will
move steadily to the west/northwest through the open water of the
Pacific Ocean. Significant strengthening is not expected at this time.

MONDAY'S RAIN: Once again, some parts of Alabama received some very
beneficial rain yesterday. Totals included 1.76" at Ashville, 1.59" at
Childersburg, 1.58" at our Demopolis SKYCAM location (atop the Civic
Center on the east bank of the Tombigee River), 1.18" at Smith Dam
(northeast of Jasper), 1.10" at Moundville, 1.07" at Jemison, .97" at
Fayette, and .84" at Steele. Thunderstorm winds were responsible for
some structural damage near Holly Pond in Cullman County.

A HOT SUMMER DAY: Sizzling heat was the big story for parts of the
Northeast U.S... highs yesterday included 98 at Washington, D.C., 96
at Philadelphia, 94 at Chicago, and 92 in New York City. The hottest
spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 121 degrees.
The high in Phoenix was 106, while Las Vegas reached 110.
