...Are You Ready For Some Football?...

Yesterday marked the thirty seventh consecutive day of 90 degree or
hotter temperatures at the Birmingham International Airport. This
tied the record for the most 90 degree days in a row. Pinson is also
at 37 days, and that was enough to establish a new record there. The
streaks may well come to an end this afternoon with extensive
cloudiness holding over the area.

REST OF YOUR HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Those persistent clouds have been
suppressing shower development across the middle of the state this
afternoon. Differential heating on either side of the cloud area has
created two enhanced zones for shower and storm development.
Scattered storms will continue developing through the evening hours,
with a few lingering into the overnight. A high pressure ridge to
the north and a surface low over the Florida Panhandle is keeping
Central Alabama in an easterly flow that is serving to bring in some
drier air. Signs are that the drier air will be in more firm control
tomorrow, with only isolated storms expected. Look for that trend to
continue into Labor Day. It look mostly dry this week. Good rain
chances return next weekend.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Showers and storms will be possible at both
Alabama and Auburn this evening, although radar trends at mid-
afternoon were looking better for Tuscaloosa. Game time temperatures
will be in the 80s. Winds will be light.

TOPIC TROPICS: Things are quickly becoming more active in t he
tropical Atlantic. Tropical Storm Felix is steadily intensifying
this afternoon over the southeastern Caribbean. It is a small storm,
which is aiding it now. Because of the proximity to the land mass of
Central America, the storm is vulnerable to entraining dry air off
the continent. Felix is slowly becoming better organized with good
outflow and a steadily dropping central pressure. A ridge of high
pressure is expected to hold to the north of Felix through early in
the week, allowing it to maintain a west northwesterly track. It
could threaten Honduras and Nicaragua, like 1974's Fifi that caused
8,000 fatalities there as a result of terrible flooding. Felix could
reach the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday, perhaps as far south as
Belize or it could be picked up by a trough to the north and move up
into the Gulf of Mexico. It will become a major hurricane during the
week ahead. It will be one to watch.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The infamous Labor Day Hurricane of 1935
reached hurricane status between the Bahamas and Florida. The storm
was moving slowly westward at 8 mph. The US Weather Bureau
forecasted that the hurricane would pass through the warm waters of
the Florida Straits and out into the Gulf. The Weather Bureau did
not know that the storm was actually moving faster than they thought,
meaning that it would cover more ground in a day than anticipated.
By early afternoon, Weather Bureau advisories stated that the
hurricane had intensified and was 200 miles from the middle Keys.
The forecasters were wrong about the hurricane's position, which was
further east than they thought. It was an easy mistake to make,
since the hurricane was very small and observation posts were spaced
out. The forecasters also had no idea that the storm would intensify
rapidly, increasing from nearly 90 mph to 160 mph in less than 18
hours. More tomorrow.

...Turn the Page...

I think that most of us would just as soon forget August 2007. The
average high for the month was 98.35F. If you use that measuring
stick, you would find that August 2007 is the hottest month ever in
Birmingham. Not just the hottest August, but the hottest month
ever. Of course, the overall mean temperature is how the month are
ranked. Yesterday marked the 37th straight day of 90F or hotter
temperatures at both the Birmingham Airport and Pinson. At Pinson,
that is a new all time record. At Birmingham, it ties the record set
in 1932, when it was 90F or hotter every day from July 8th to August
13th. We will be right on the borderline of the record today. I
know that you haven't forgotten that we shattered the record for
number of consecutive 100 degree days in Birmingham at ten this
month. The century mark was achieved on fourteen days during the
month. The peak temperature was 105F on the 15th and 23rd. We will
finish the month with about five inches of rain for the month, which
belies the fact that we are in a Category Five drought.

YOUR FORECAST: Drier air just to our north, but it should stay far
enough north to allow for scattered storms to continue across Central
sections of the state through Labor Day. Fans heading to Auburn and
Tuscaloosa for this evening's games might want to pack the rain gear
just in case one of these storms pops up near the stadiums. Labor
Day looks like it will feature more of the same. Skies will be
partly cloudy, with scattered storms developing during the
afternoon. Highs today and Sunday will probably top out in the upper
80s to near 90.

TROPICALLY SPEAKING: Tropical depression number six passed through
the southern Windward Islands overnight. It will likely become
Tropical Storm Felix today. It is expected to continue on a general
west northwest course for the next five days, finding itself south of
Jamaica by Monday. The GFS still had not chosen to recognize the
storm as of this writing. The GFDL gradually intensifies it into a
hurricane as it passes just north of Honduras on its way to Belize, a
little faster than the official forecast. Interestingly, the GFS
develops two strong hurricanes during the next two weeks. The first
curves just off the East Coast out at day 15.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Residents along the northern Gulf Coast
thought that they had said goodbye to Hurricane Elena two days before
when the erratic hurricane stopped short of plowing into the Alabama
coast and made an abrupt easterly turn. The hurricane wandered over
to near the Tampa Bay area and stalled again as steering currents
collapsed. But on the Sunday before Labor Day, warnings from the
National Hurricane Center were frantic. The hurricane turned back to
the west and was threatening the same stretch of coast that had been
threatened before. Max winds reached 125 mph. The hurricane made
landfall near Biloxi on the morning of September 2nd. Peak winds of
118 mph sustained and a gust to 135 mph were measured at Dauphin Island.

NO MORE 100-DEGREE HEAT: At least we don't think so. That would be
most unusual this late in the season but it's not out of the
question. One of our worst heat waves on record came in September 1925.

We weather humans celebrate tomorrow as the first day of autumn. Is
it possible that certain words sound cooler than others? To me, the
word September just sounds cooler than August. I know that is
stretching the point.

A weak front pushed into extreme North Alabama overnight. It was
hardly noticeable although the dew point dropped some across the
Tennessee Valley. We do not believe the front will eliminate
thunderstorm activity. Besides it will stall. We are going to keep
scattered showers and thunderstorms in the weather picture for the
next 5-7 days. There will be at least some variations from day to
day. High temperatures will be persistent in the upper 80s or maybe
slightly above 90.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Both Alabama and Auburn have home games Saturday
night with Alabama playing Western Carolina and Auburn hosting Kansas
State. Temperatures will be between 80 and 85 at kickoff and there
will be some threat of scattered afternoon thunderstorms especially
early in the game. UAB plays Michigan State East-Lansing Saturday
with an 11:00 a.m. kickoff. The weather could not be better with
sunshine and low humidity. At kickoff, it should be about 75 degrees
with a high near 80 during the game. For high school football games
tonight, there is a risk of thunderstorms continuing through the
evening with temperatures in the upper 70s at kickoff.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical depression is forming 200 miles east of
the Windward Islands. An Air Force plane is in the area. It could
very well become a tropical storm. If so, the name will be Felix. A
small low-pressure area 215 miles south of Nantucket, Mass. still has
some potential to be a tropical cyclone before it reaches cooler waters.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Huntsville was expecting to see the 33rd day
in a row with temperatures 90 or above today. Out in Phoenix they
have already reached a record of 29 days in a row with temperatures
of 110 or higher. Cool spots this morning included 35 at Doylesville,
CO., and 34 at Barter Island and Dead Horse Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The two grandkids slept late so it
became my duty for the first time in 2 weeks to go on an early
morning ½ mile walk with little Miss Molly. I could immediately tell
the difference. The kids have been going on ½ mile runs instead of a
walk so it took me the first 100 yards to try to slow her down like
Roy Rogers used to do in the old movies getting a runaway stagecoach
under control. Like old times, however, I sure have missed those
walks, but have enjoyed the break. Life goes on, rush, rush, rush......

...Showers and Storms Remain Possible...

A SOGGY AIRMASS HANGS AROUND: This will be another day with a good
chance of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama as a moisture
laden airmass remains parked overhead. To the north, there is a sharp
front over Tennessee, which marks the leading edge of much drier air,
but the front is losing upper air support, and it should stall out
somewhere near the Alabama/Tennessee border later today. Like recent
days, most of the showers and thunderstorms will come in the noon to
midnight time frame, but a morning shower is not out of the question.
The high today will be generally in the 86 to 90 degree range.

A HOLIDAY WEEKEND AHEAD: Not much change through Labor Day; there
will be good decent intervals of sunshine each day, but also we will
have to dodge scattered, mainly afternoon and evening showers and
thunderstorms. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the upper 80s and
low 90s for most communities.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, a shower or storm
will be possible at just about any stadium across Alabama, so we
suggest you take along the rain gear. The kickoff temperature will be
close to 80 degrees.
Tomorrow, Alabama plays Western Carolina at Tuscaloosa and Auburn
hosts Kansas State at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Both games are night
games. Temperatures will be 82 to 85 at kickoff and we cannot rule
out some scattered thunderstorms in the vicinity, especially early in
the game. Once again, be prepared for some rain in case a shower or
storm drifts over one of those venues.

AT THE BEACH: If you are headed to the Gulf coast for some relaxation
over the Labor Day weekend, there will be some scattered showers and
storms around each day, but on the positive side expect about 4 to 6
hours of sunshine each day. The high along the immediate coast will
be in the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Alabama Gulf coast last night was a
toasty 89 degrees (F). In fact, the water is quite warm at all buoy
locations across the Gulf of Mexico.

TROPICS: A tropical wave will approach the Windward Islands tonight,
and this system has the potential to become a tropical depression
during the next 24 hours. It will move through the Caribbean over the
weekend. Another disturbance about 250 miles east of Atlantic City,
NJ has the potential to become better organized today, but it will be
moving northeast, away from land, over the weekend.

STILL HOT: Some good periods of midday sunshine have helped to keep
maximum temperatures in Birmingham at or over 90 degrees all week;
the last time we had a high under 90 was on July 25, when the high
was 89. The average high temperature in Birmingham for the month of
August is an amazing 98.86 degrees.

MORE SHOWERS AND STORMS: A thick blanket of moist air envelops
Alabama and this will lead to a daily dose of showers and
thunderstorms. Some of those each day will give some communities
locally heavy rain. This does not mean that everybody will get rain
every day, but the coverage will be decent enough to offer more hope
for relief from the dry weather. Regardless of how much it rains
during the next week, it still will not be nearly enough to squelch
the drought. Topsoil moisture is one of the critical drought items
that would show benefit quicker if the rains continue.

In the last 24 hours, numerous communities have received rain. Many
of them got more rain overnight than they have received in several
months. In the SW part of Huntsville, as much as 3.40 inches of rain
fell in only 1 hour last evening setting off flash flooding. The
thunderstorms rumbled on most of the night and many areas in Shelby
County received well over 1 inch of rain. We have a long list of
those welcome rains on the ABC 33/40 Blog. Check it out.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight and Friday night,
game time temperatures will be in the lower 80s with scattered
showers and thunderstorms still a threat. On Saturday, Alabama plays
Western Carolina at Tuscaloosa and Auburn hosts Kansas State at home.
Both games are night games. Temperatures will be 82 to 85 at kickoff
and we cannot rule out some scattered thunderstorms in the vicinity,
especially early in the game.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The vast oceans are getting a little busier. A
tropical wave 600 miles east of the Windward Islands has become a
little better organized. Upper-level winds should become friendlier
for development. Could be a tropical depression over the next day or
so. A small low has developed 350 miles east of Cape Hatteras. It is
stationary, but should start moving NE later today. It could briefly
develop into a tropical cyclone before being overtaken by a front in
a day or so. A tropical wave over the Bay of Campeche should move
inland over mainland Mexico later today.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 119 in Death Valley was the USA hot spot
Wednesday. Some chill spots this morning included 27 at the west
entrance to Yellowstone National Park and 29 in Eagle, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We are sorry to hear that one of our
daily readers, who has a small dog, had to go through the frightening
experience of last night's thunderstorms scaring the little dog so
bad that it had a seizure. They did not get much sleep. Little Miss
Molly was as busy as a bumblebee until after midnight. This whole
household was discombobulated, because I worked until 3:00 a.m. and
Miss Molly retired for the night 3 or 4 times before it became
permanent. She has the advantage, however, of sleeping at any time.
Life goes on.....

...Moist Air Hangs Over Alabama...
A MUGGY LATE AUGUST DAY: We begin this day with tropical air
lingering across Alabama. This is the airmass that has supported
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms for the last four
days, and we see no reason for showers and storms not to form again
this afternoon during the peak of the daytime heating process. The
storms will be aided by a weak upper air low northwest of the state,
and some leftover boundaries from thunderstorms yesterday and last
night. The stronger storms today will produce heavy rain, plenty of
lightning, and strong winds in a few spots. And, like recent days,
the main opportunity of showers and storms will come from about noon
until midnight, but a few scattered morning showers are not out of
the question.

A weak front will approach Alabama from the north tomorrow, but at
this time it looks like the dry air behind the front will generally
remain north of Alabama. So, the chance of scattered afternoon
showers and thunderstorms will continue tomorrow and through the
Labor Day weekend. Afternoon temperatures will peak around 90 degrees
on most days, slightly above normal for late August and early
September in Alabama.

PIGSKIN ACTION RETURNS: Some high school football teams will play
their opening games tonight; there will be a chance of a thunderstorm
at all game sites, but those storms will be scattered. The kickoff
temperature this evening will be around 82 degrees with high humidity
values. That is also what you can expect for the games tomorrow night
as well. The chance of any one stadium getting wet tonight and
tomorrow night is about one in four.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Alabama will host Western Carolina for their
home opener Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The
game kicks off at 6:07 p.m. We project a temperature of 85 degrees at
kickoff, and there is some risk of a thunderstorm in the area as the
game begins. Auburn hosts Kansas State Saturday night at 6:45; the
temperature at Jordan-Hare Stadium will be near 82 degrees at kickoff
with a thunderstorm possible.

TROPICS: A tropical wave in the Atlantic, about 700 miles east of the
Windward Islands, has the potential to become a tropical depression
today as it moves to the west. This system should wind up in the
Caribbean by the weekend. Another disturbance about 300 miles east of
Jacksonville, Florida also has the potential to become a tropical
depression in coming days; it will drift slowly and erratically due
to weak steering currents in the region.

THE RAIN PARADE: Rain totals across Alabama yesterday included 1.46"
at Steele (in St. Clair County between Ashville and Gadsden), 1.24"
at Meridianville, .92" at Cordova, and .57" at Gadsden.

SHOWERS/STORMS THROUGH THE WEEKEND: We are still enjoying an
extended period of weather where we have a good chance of a shower or
thunderstorm almost every day. Even with a good chance, some folks
will get left out. Based on radar coverage and actual rain reports,
it seems at least 50% of the Alabama landscape received rain
yesterday and in a lot of places, it was not just a few drops. Almost
4 inches fell in parts of Shelby County and a number of other
communities received more than 1 inch.

Not a big change in the prospects for rain Thursday and Friday. We
still think scattered showers and storms will be around over the
weekend and through Labor Day, but possibly not as numerous. They
should be more scattered during that time.
The more numerous showers put a choke hold on the old backyard
thermometer. Instead of suffering through 100 to 105-degree heat, we
continue to semi-enjoy highs in the upper 80s and around 90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Nobody can forget two years ago today. The Katrina
tragedy continued to unfold in New Orleans. During the afternoon,
Katrina had moved inland and was plowing her way northward through
East Mississippi. Meridian would go on to record a wind gust of 81
mph. Literally thousands of trees were being uprooted in Central and
SW Alabama. Today a tropical wave 900 miles east of the Windward
Islands is moving into an area where it will have a chance of
development as it moves west 15 to 20. A non-tropical low 260 miles
SE of Charleston may have some upper-level wind support to help it
develop more during the next few days. An Air Force plane is going in
to check it out tomorrow, if necessary. Another tropical wave over
the Yucatan Peninsula will move out over the Bay of Campeche in the
next day or so. We will keep one of our 12 eyes on that.

AUTUMN COLOR/YES OR NO? Sure have noticed a lot of trees turning
brown already. Driving across my favorite highway in NE Jefferson
County (Deerfoot Parkway), it does not look so promising. However,
there are always surprises as certain trees seem to be the friendly
type and put on a vivid display of color. We asked Mike Pender, who
owns Classic Garden and Landscape in Centerpoint, to give us his
assessment. Here in his own words, "We should still have a decent
fall color this year, but it may be more subtle and not quite as
bright. Since Fall color is triggered more by shorter days and cooler
temperatures than by rainfall, what we really need are some crisp
cold nights to get the fall color going. Fall leaf colors result in
changes in the leaves. Yellow and red pigments are always present,
but green is predominant. As nights turn colder, the green pigments
cease and the yellows and reds take over. A big question is, if the
drought continues, will there be any leaves left? Another question is
how many trees are permanently damaged or died. Only time will tell
this year." (See his complete report on the ABC 33/40 weather Blog.)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As Little Miss Molly continues her
birthday week, she sure does get mixed up because of so many folks
here. Last night she settled down three times to sleep for the night,
but got moved three times. Sometimes she looks up at me as if to say,
"What in the world is going on? What has happened to my little set
routine? I need much more sleep than I am getting." Life goes on......

...More Wet Weather In The Days Ahead...
BRING ON THE RAIN: A copious amount of moisture remains in the air
over Alabama, and that will mean a mostly cloudy day today with a
good chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially this afternoon
and tonight. Like the storms in recent days, they won't be moving
much, and some neighborhoods will receive heavy rain. All of the
storms will contain gobs of lightning, and some will produce local
areas of damaging straight line winds called a wet microburst.
Because of the lack of sunshine, we figure most communities will
experience a high only in the upper 80s today. The last time the
maximum daily temperature in Birmingham was under 90 was way back on
July 25 when the high was 89.

LOOKING AHEAD: With moist air sticking around and no capping
inversion (like we had last week), we expect scattered to numerous
showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis through Friday. While most
of the showers and storms will come from around 12:00 Noon to 12:00
Midnight, a few late night or morning showers can't be completely
ruled out. Highs will remain in the upper 80s.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: A busy weekend is ahead; high school and college
football kicks off, and many people will take the opportunity for one
final getaway to the Gulf coast. No matter what you have planned, you
will have to dodge showers and thunderstorms over the weekend as
maritime tropical air remains over the state. Some rain is possible
for the football games both Friday night and Saturday, and a few
passing storms are likely long the Gulf coast. We will have our
specific kick-off forecasts here tomorrow.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A tropical wave in the Central Atlantic about half-
way between the Lesser Antilles and the coast of Africa has some
potential for development in coming days as it moves westward into a
region of warmer SSTs (sea surface temperatures). Also, we note a
surface low pressure area about 100 miles southeast of Wilmington,
North Carolina; this is drifting south and also has some potential
for additional organization during the next 48 hours.

SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included 3.72"
in the Weatherly neighborhood in Shelby County (just east of Pelham),
1.85" at the NWS office at the Shelby County Airport (near Calera),
1.19" at the Logan Martin Dam along the Coosa River, 1.19" at
Wadley, .96" at Anniston, and .80" at Mountain Brook. The same
observer at Mountain Brook (near Mountain Brook High School) has
recorded 3.20" since Saturday. Shelby County was actually under a
flash flood warning for a brief time during the evening hours last
night due to the big downpour just east of Pelham.

Some spots have missed the rain, however, one observer in Cook
Springs (St. Clair County) writes: "It refuses to rain in , or on,
Cook Springs; less than 1/10″ over the last 4 days. Rain, and plenty
of it, on all 4 points of the compass around us, but not here. Sob!"

ENCOURAGING PROSPECT FOR RAIN: Looks like we may have our better
chance of getting wet for the next three days than we have seen in a
long time. There is a moisture-laden air mass parked over Alabama.
This will produce showers and thunderstorms every day for the rest of
the week. Even a fair amount of daytime heating from the sun will
cause some of those thunderstorms to become strong and dump locally
heavy amounts of rain. These storms will be slow movers. This will
allow them to dump more rain in some communities, but it will also
mean that the lightning will persist longer and there will be plenty
of that.

Thunderstorms were already in progress this afternoon. The more
numerous ones were over the extreme south, but scattered ones over NE
Alabama were moving very slowly. One of those dumped almost an inch
of rain at Anniston Airport by early afternoon. There is so much
moisture in the atmosphere that some of these storms could persist
past midnight. Probably Wednesday and Thursday will give us our best
chance of getting beneficial rain. The three-day total may be 1 to 2
inches in a number of communities. We believe the showers and
thunderstorms will be fewer in number by Saturday and possibly on
Friday also.

With more clouds and more showers, it will put a cramp on the
thermometer. Over the next two days we are calling for upper 80s here
in Central Alabama and maybe edging back upward to 90 or so over the
weekend. It is getting that time of year again. We will need to start
issuing football forecasts about Thursday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: That tropical wave over the Western Caribbean
moved inland over Central America squashing any chance of
development. Another tropical wave, midway between Africa and the
Lesser Antilles, was producing only disorganized showers and storms.
However, conditions are favorable for this one to develop.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: Tomorrow will have 2 minutes less sunlight than
today—just another sign that we are headed toward a season change.
Our normal temperature has dropped from 91 a couple of weeks ago to
89 now and our normal low from 71 to 68. It will not be too long
until we see some frost on the pumpkin, possibly as early as mid to
late October. That tornado Sunday night at Northwood, North Dakota
has been rated an EF4. There was 1 fatality and 70 injuries. Lowest
temperature in the USA this morning was 30 at Meacham, Oregon and
Deadhorse, Alaska. 114 was the hottest yesterday in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has been kept so busy
with two grandkids here that she almost begs for some naptime, but
she really is enjoying their company and I am getting some breaks
from the walking track. Miss Molly winds up in a tight circle when
she takes a nap. Looking down, she resembles a 45-rpm vinyl record.
You are too young to remember those. The least bit of noise can put
that little girl on full alert. She is never too sleepy or tired to
greet someone who happens to come by. We will celebrate her birthday
the rest of the week. Life goes on......

...More Summer Storms This Afternoon...
THE STORMS OF SUMMER: Summer thunderstorms dropped heavy rain on
parts of Alabama yesterday, and every drop was welcome. Some totals
included 2.88" at Gorgas (on the Jefferson/Walker County line), 2.22"
at Auburn, 1.11" at Shelby Shores (on Lay Lake), .80" at Northport,
and .55" at the Birmingham International Airport. Some of the storms
were severe; there was wind damage in Walker County about one mile
north of Jasper, and scattered damage tree and power line damage was
reported in far Eastern Tuscaloosa County. Down in Tallapoosa County,
a boat house on Lake Martin near the U.S. 280 bridge was
substantially damaged.

But, as is often the case on a hot summer afternoon, some people were
short-changed on the rain. The driest part of Alabama was the
northeast, where no rain was recorded in places like Gadsden and
Anniston.

LOOKING AHEAD: A moisture-laden airmass will continue to hang over
Alabama through mid-week, meaning scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours today and
tomorrow. There might even be a few late night or morning showers in
scattered spots close to small scale surface boundaries. The chance
of any one spot getting wet this afternoon is about one in two, and
like yesterday, where the storms form you can expect lots of
lightning, heavy rain, and the potential for wet microbursts, or
local areas of damaging straight line winds. Providing an early
warning for these kind of wind events is almost impossible due to
their short duration and very small scale coverage.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND PEEK: A surface front will approach the northern part
of Alabama by Friday and Saturday, but at this time it looks like the
front won 't have enough southward push to make it through the state.
So, we will maintain some chance of scattered, mainly afternoon
showers and storms over the Labor Day weekend statewide. Afternoon
highs will be close to 90 degrees each day.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: There is an interesting mid-level
circulation on satellite images over the Caribbean with some showers
and storms in the area; most likely this system will move into
Central America with little chance of significant development. We
also note a few waves over the far Eastern Atlantic, but no sign of
organization at this time.

AUGUST TURNS WET: As of late last week, the rain total at Birmingham
(based on data at the Birmingham Airport), was only 0.25" for the
entire month of August. If that figure would have lasted through this
week, this would be the driest August on record. But, generous rains
have returned, and the total for the month has now soared to 4.26",
meaning rain for the month will actually wind up being above normal.
But, the deficiency for the year remains 17.54 inches.

THERMOMETER TRYING TO WORK WITH US: This is the last week of Summer,
at least it is for weather people who count June, July and August as
Summer and September, October and November as Autumn. On the
calendar, we still have about three more weeks. However, the old
thermometer seems to be getting with the dance and is more user
friends. James Spann believes that we have seen the last of 100-
degree weather until at least next year and I tend to think that he
is correct.

This is also going to be a good week for the rain buckets, as we will
have a decent chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day, especially
through Thursday. Our best chance may be tomorrow when we will be
getting some scattered showers and thunderstorms, even in the early
part of the day. High temperatures will be consistently around 90 to
92 all week. By the end of the week, there are some indications that
a weak front could move down into our corner of the world. This would
at least bring some slightly less humid air and some slightly lower
temperatures.

Rain distribution sure has been uneven lately. Would you believe that
Roebuck, in the NE part of Birmingham, has received 4.25 inches of
rain in the last three days and Birmingham Airport 3.46 inches,
including 2 inches in one storm Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, some
other communities have stayed dry.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A low-pressure area moved inland into NE Mexico
this morning producing locally heavy rain over that general area. A
tropical wave over the Western Caribbean is not doing much.
Significant development is not expected. Still another tropical wave
over the far Eastern Atlantic could have slow development in the next
few days.

HITHER AND YON: Hurricane Katrina was beginning to catch much
attention two years ago today, as the big storm grew a lot stronger
in the Gulf of Mexico. We all know what happened in New Orleans. Way
up north, a tornado struck Northwood, North Dakota last evening with
a lot of damage. One person was killed and 18 injured. That town is
located in the eastern part of North Dakota SW of Grand Forks. 31 was
the USA low this morning at Meacham, Oregon. It was 34 in Eagle, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure do appreciate all the Happy
Birthday greetings for Little Miss Molly in the last few days. A
great response to the story that we posted on the Blog. She had a
delightful birthday, but she also got into semi-trouble. She chewed
up and destroyed the majority owner's little 67-year old baby shoes.
The minority owner also got into semi-trouble, because he forgot the
majority owner's birthday which is today. However, because of work
schedules, we have celebrated birth weeks, so no big deal. (Says the
minority owner, NOT the majority owner!) Our home looks like an
obstacle course, or maybe even a landfill, at the moment. My daughter
and two grandkids have taken on the huge project to completely
rearrange a whole bunch of stuff. Stacked in the living area now are
thousands and thousands of color slides, color prints and blank and
white prints. She is going to categorize all of those (at least
25,000) and get them all filed in order. Meanwhile, when Little Miss
Molly is playing ball, she has to jump over big piles of stuff that
she normally considers her baseball diamond. But life goes on and we
will survive.....

...August Winding Down...
As August winds down here in Birmingham and Central Alabama, it will
be remembered as one of our hottest times ever. In fact, it may end
up being the hottest August ever in Birmingham. From the fabulous
site maintained by the NWS and the State Climatologist, I can see
that the hottest August until now as measured by average high
temperature is 1995, when the average high in August was a toasty
96.29F. August 2007 is currently eating that record for lunch, with
an average high through Saturday of 99.88F. If you extrapolate out
the expected highs through the 31st, we should finish the month with
an average high of 98.35F by my calculations. So by that measure, it
will be the hottest August, and most likely by the proper calculation
of highest average mean temperature. If It is going to be hot, least
at least have a record to show for it. We should make a t-shirt…

RELIEF IN SIGHT: I am so ready for the heat to be gone. Astoria,
Oregon is looking good to me right now. Very thankful for the
showers that some folks got over the weekend. Ended up ahead of
normal for the month in rainfall at the airport with three straight
days of rain Friday, Saturday and yesterday. Scattered storms on the
agenda again today and Wednesday. By Thursday, a trough sets up shop
over the East Coast, eroding the ridge and shoving the axis of high
pressure back to the west. This could allow some cooler air to slide
down this way for the weekend. Unfortunately, it would mean some
drier air, but at least we would have cooler going for us. In the
long range, it looks like we could see a big weather maker late in
the Labor Day week with a strong trough and chances for heavy rain
and storms.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is still eerily quiet here in late
August. We are hurtling toward the peak of hurricane season and
there are no major storms in sight. A disturbance over the
southwestern Gulf has run out of time as it moves inland over Old
Mexico. A tropical wave over the Central Caribbean could make a
depression as it moves toward Honduras and Nicaragua, but it is
encountering a good bit of wind shear. The various global models try
to scare something up either east of North Carolina are over the open
Atlantic over the next week. We will just have to wait and see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: The Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 came ashore
on the Sea Islands near Beaufort, SC. This was the first of three
major hurricanes to affect the United States between August and
October and one of six hurricanes to hit the U.S. coast that year.
Many communities along the South Carolina coast were inundated by the
stom surge. Death toll estimates range between 2000 and 2500.
30,000 people were left homeless. Messages about the hurricane as
it passed the Bahamas were sent by cable to the mainland, but
forecasters had no idea where it would go. The Savannah newspaper
carried a small story about the hurricane the day before it struck
but there were no preparations and there was no telegraph to the low-
lying islands. The Hurricane Season of 1893 was the second most
deadly in United States history, with two of the six hurricanes that
made landfall in the U.S. that year killing 2000 people apiece.

...Scattered Storms Again Today...
It's looking like another active day of thunderstorms across the area
with a very moist airmass in place and moderate instability. Storms
that do develop will produce lots of dangerous lightning. Remember
the thirty-thirty rule: when you hear thunder within 30 seconds of a
lightning flash, get inside immediately. Stay there until 30 minutes
after the final thunder you hear. Also keep in mind that lightning
victims can nearly always be resuscitated with CPR. Scattered wind
damage reports will also be received. Lucky folks will get heavy
rain, buut watch out for ponding of water on roads.

LOOKING AHEAD: we stay in a moist airmass through midweek, along
with a weaker version of the high pressure ridge we have been dealing
with. This will keep us hot, with highs in the lower to middle 90s
and scattered storms each day. By Thursday, an approaching
disturbance and cold front will lead to organized storm development.
Looks for enhanced storm chances on Friday, Saturday and perhaps
Saturday. A persistent trough could keep us wet and on the cool side
the week of Labor Day.

TROPICS: Disturbed weather over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico
will move into Mexico before it has time to develop. A tropical wave
off the coast of South America could develop into a tropical
depression and head toward the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua, then
the Yucatan and into the southwestern Gulf this week. Should not be
very strong. Look for the possibility of a tropical depression
forming in the week ahead east of North Carolina. It will move
northeast, no threat to land. Late in the week, look to the Atlantic
east of the Caribbean Islands for the next tropical depression to
form. If this one does develop, it will threaten the islands of the
Caribbean, perhaps Florida. Finally, look for a strong Cape Verde
storm to develop around Labor Day, but it will exploit a weakness in
the Bermuda ridge and go north.

ON THIS DATE IN 1949: Weather Bureau Hurricane Forecaster
extraordinaire Grady Norton described this hurricane as being a
category just below that of the great Florida hurricanes. It struck
the east coast of the state near Delray Beach on this date in 1949.
Hurricanes were not officially named for women then. Earlier,
President Truman had been in Miami addressing the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, and a hurricane spawned during his visit was christened
"Harry." When the Delray Beach Hurricane approached South Florida,
newsmen named it "Bess," because it had "more authority." Whatever
it was called, the hurricane was a force with which to be reckoned.
A one-minute average wind of 160mph was recorded at Jupiter
Lighthouse before the instrument blew away. The storm followed the
path of the 1928 Hurricane that had caused horrendous loss of life at
Lake Okeechobee, but levees built after the last disaster held and a
repeat of history was avoided.
