...Showers Return Tonight...

Skies were cloudy and foggy at dawn across much of Central Alabama on
this final Saturday of 2007. But they cleared quickly in most areas
after sunrise. By mid-morning, clear to partly cloudy skies were in
place for the most part, with the exception of a few areas where low
clouds were hanging tougher, like the northwest corner of the state.
With a good bit of sunshine today, temperatures will warm to near 60
degrees on average. Rain was still falling over South and
Southeast Alabama, in the vicinity of the front that moved through
yesterday. Since it is parallel to the upper flow, it has lost its
forward momentum. It will be a player in our weather starting tonight.

SHOWERS AHEAD: Changes will begin to occur as early as tonight.
Showers will begin to increase this evening over Louisiana and
southern Mississippi in response to an upper level disturbance that
will be swinging across the region. The showers will spread northward
through the overnight hours and spill over into Sunday morning. Most
areas will pick up between one quarter and one half inch of rain from
this system. There will be an axis of heavier rain concentrated
somewhere across the area, and it has consistently looked like that
will occur in a southwest to northeast stripe bordered by Butler/
Linden, Camden/Marion, Montgomery/Clanton, and Opelika/Wedowee. Some
places in this area will receive over an inch of rain. The Atlanta
area may pick up an inch. Temperatures overnight will drop into the
lower 40s by morning.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The rain will end from southwest to
northeast on Sunday morning, followed by clearing skies by lunchtime.
Temperatures will top out in the middle to upper 50s. Readings Sunday
night will fall into the middle 30s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday morning, another disturbance
will be intensifying as it moves out on the Plains. Our winds will
become southerly as a surface high slides to the east and the
disturbance heads our way. A strong cold front will barrel towards
Alabama Monday night, and our winds will turn to the northwest and
become brisk in its wake. There could be a little light rain or
showers with its passage. Tuesday looks like it will be a raw day
with lingering clouds, falling temperatures and a biting northwest
wind. Could there be a snow flurry or two? Temperatures Tuesday
night will plummet into the lower 20s in most spots, with teens in the
normally colder locations. The models have backed off a bit on the
idea of Wednesday staying below freezing all day, but the mercury will
struggle to get out of the 30s, and there still will be a brisk north
wind. Thursday will be a bit warmer, and the real moderation of
temperatures will begin on Friday as our winds become southerly once
again. Showers will not be far behind.

ON THIS DATE IN 1894: The town of Frostproof, Florida
was incorporated in 1886. Local real estate developers, intent on
attracting citrus farmers to the area, lobbied to have the town named
Frostproof. While popular opinion favored another name, the real
estate agent who volunteered to deliver the town's official
application to the U.S. Postal Service changed the application to read
Frostproof. Frostproof was anything but, and a devastating freeze
affected the area on this date, causing severe damage to agricultural
interests across much of the state. Another bad freeze occurred the
following February and was followed by another a couple of years
later. The town petitioned to have its name changed, but it would be
changed back in 1906 and is still called Frostproof today.

...More Showers Overnight...

Our marginal at best severe weather event turned out to
be fairly well behaved. No significant severe weather reports were
received. There were some large hail reports from Northwest Alabama
with the early morning elevated storms. A couple of storms did look
mean and nasty on radar, but fortunately never got strong enough to
cause big problems.

BENEFICIAL RAINS: Rainfall amounts were generally light
across North and Central Alabama. Tuscaloosa picked up 0.61 inches.
0.45 fell at the Birmingham Airport. Anniston picked up 0.36 inches.
Pinson had one of the better amounts at 0.95 inches thanks to the
morning mid-morning storm that moved across northern Jefferson
County. The Skywatcher at Hayden picked up 1.28 inches. Rick in
Remlap reported 0.79. Mike in Vinemont reported 0.86. Bill Lockridge
in Noccalula Falls reported 1.65 inches. Grady Gunnels in Abbeville
reported 1.25 inches.

MORE RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: Fog and low clouds will be
prevalent early this morning, but sunshine should break through
later. The sunny respite will be brief, as clouds will overspread the
area again tonight. Showers will break out during the evening, and
continue through much of the overnight hours into early Sunday. The
rain will be in response to moisture overrunning the stationary front
that will be coming back northward as a warm front later today. Where
the axis of heaviest rainfall will setup is to be determined, but it
most likely will be between Birmingham and Montgomery. Some locations
will receive in excss of an inch of rain from this efficient
rainmaking setup, but just a short distance away, amounts will be much
lighter.

COLDER: A strong cold front will push through the area
on Sunday, putting an end to the rain and sending cooler air into
Alabama. Readings by Monday morning will be just above freezing
across central sections. Readings on Monday will make it back into
the 60s before an even stronger surge of colder air overspreads the
area Monday night. Temperatures will gall through the day on Tuesday,
dropping to near freezing by evening. There are some indications we
could even see a few snow flurries Tuesday afternoon and evening over
the state. Readings by Wednesday morning will be in the lower 20s in
Central Alabama, with teens over the north. Wednesday may see
readings below freezing all day over the northern half of the state.
Temperatures will begin to slowly moderate by Thursday. Our next
chance of rain will come Saturday.

ONE YEAR AGO: A late year tornado outbreak across Texas
sent President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush scrambling for
shelter as a tornado came close to their ranch in Crawford, Texas.
Secret Service agents drove them to the ranch tornado shelter in an
armored military vehicle, but they never entered the safe haven,
waiting in the vehicle until the storm passed. At least eight
tornadoes occurred in the Fort Worth NWSFO CWA including an F2 at
Clifton and near Blum.

...More Rain Late In The Weekend...

A STORMY FRIDAY: A Tornado Watch covered a good part of SW and
North/Central Alabama through the afternoon. There were at least two
Tornado Warnings during the day in Central Alabama. One was for Blount
and Marshall Counties before noon. The other one was this afternoon
for parts of Bibb and Perry Counties. We do not have any reports of
any significant damage today. Early this morning, hailstones ¾ inch in
diameter covered the ground at two locations in extreme NW Alabama. A
number of communities got beneficial rain today with some places
getting well over an inch. Late this afternoon, the line of storms was
across North/Central and Central Alabama and moving rather slowly
toward the east.

Off to our west is a cold front that will be moving through Central
Alabama tonight. This will temporarily end the showers for most of
Saturday. However, showers will start spreading back northward
Saturday night and there is a good chance of rain on Sunday,
especially through the morning hours.
Colder air starts spreading into the state on Monday and much of next
week will be generally dry. We will have some of our coldest
temperatures so far this season by next Wednesday morning.

OUTLOOK FOR NEW YEARS DAY: It looks dry, breezy and colder with highs
only in the 40s. We expect lows Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to
be in the lower 20s with maybe some teens in the North Alabama
valleys. On Thursday morning, a strong high-pressure area will be
nearby and it could be just as cold that morning.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: South Florida was the warmest place in the country
yesterday with 85 at Marathon. The coldest in the lower 48 this
morning was 26 below zero at Gunnison over on the western slope in
Colorado. Much of the Rocky Mountain West is now snow covered. Denver
has a good blanket of snow and much of Utah, also. In Alaska, the
coldest this morning was 34 below zero at Umiat. Alta, a ski area in
the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah, has 53 inches of snow. It
dropped to 14 below zero in Bryce Canyon National Park in South Utah.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Independence Bowl in Shreveport Sunday
night where Alabama plays Colorado, fair dry weather is expected. The
temperature should be in the lower 50s at kick off and in the middle
40s by the fourth quarter. Auburn meets Clemson in the Peach Bowl the
following night in Atlanta. Perfect weather for that because it is
played inside the Georgia Dome.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another dreadful report about little
animal abuse. Police were looking for a person in Utah that threw
about 12 baby puppies in a trash bin. Most of them froze to death. I
do not see how in the world that person sleeps at night. Some people
have zero conscience. A busy, busy, busy day at the house of Little
Miss Molly and I have not even spoken to her today. Saturday will be
my big makeup day. I want to do all the walks with her and have as
many ballgames as she asks for. She deserves it. She misses me. She
has been nestled by my chair a lot today. Life goes on through storms
and sunshine.

...Severe Weather Possible Today...

Severe weather is possible across Alabama today as a
powerful upper trough and strong cold front move affect the state
today. While it is not a classic situation, it is one that we must
take seriously. Since it has been awhile since we had a severe
weather situation, it is a good time to contemplate your personal
severe weather situation. Make sure that you have a reliable source
for instant weather information and a plan in case severe weather
threatens today.

THE SITUATION: Our strong trough of low pressure is
rotating toward the Deep South today. Up at about 5,000 feet, a strong
low level jet, or flow of air is streaming copious amounts of moisture
northward over the South. This trough is becoming what we call
negatively tilted, meaning that its axis is oriented from northwest to
southeast. This gives it added punch. At the surface, low pressure
is developing over the Arklatex. This low will push a warm front
northward this morning, bringing a round of mainly elevated
thunderstorms along with it.

As the low moves northeast, our winds will be
increasing out of the south and southeast and it will become breezy
today. Dewpoints will rise into the upper 50s. Skies will be mostly
cloudy today, but if we get some breaks in the overcast, temperatures
could get warmer than we think. We are projecting highs in the lower
60s, but with a little surface heating, temperatures in the middle or
upper 60s could make instability levels increase more than we expect.
For now, we will call for minimal instability. But the complicating
factor is the shear. Wind shear values will be extremely high today.

A line of strong thunderstorms will approach from
the west today. Any storms that form ahead of the line of storms
could become severe with the possibility of isolated tornadoes. As
the line moves across Alabama, individual storms will have the
opportunity to become severe, and could produce damaging winds or even
tornadoes.

So, it is not a classic severe weather situation,
but one that bears watching. Rainfall amounts should be decent,
averaging a little more than one half inch, with localized one inch
amounts possible.

MOVING AHEAD: Showers will end from the west tonight as
our winds shift to westerly and northwesterly. Temperatures will drop
into the lower 40s. Saturday should dawn cloudy and cool, but we will
get a period of sunshine. The front will not make it very far to our
south, and low pressure will form along the Louisiana Coast on
Saturday night. Showers will overspread the area again and Sunday
looks like a wet day. Rainfall could average one inch on Sunday.
Cooler air will filter in behind the front on Monday, but a surge of
much colder air will arrive Tuesday, bringing us some of the coldest
air in quite some time. The mercury may not rise above freezing on
Tuesday and Wednesday across North Alabama. Lows Wednesday morning
and Thursday morning will drop to the lower 20s Wednesday and
Thursday morning, with teens in colder locations.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: One passenger was killed and 63
injured aboard a United Airlines 747 flying from Tokyo to Honolulu
when the aircraft encountered clear air turbulence. Clear air
turbulence is very hard to predict and often strikes with little
warning. It usually occurs around the edges of the jetstream and near
mountain ranges. It is like a big pothole in the sky, shaking planes
violently and often causing them to drop large distances. Over 100
people are injured in turbulence related incidents in the U.S. each
year, a very small amount considering there are 23,600 commercial
flights each day, but injuries can still be serious.

...Several Periods of Rain...

A STORMY FRIDAY: We are in for intermittent periods of rain between
now and Sunday night and it still looks like our main rain event will
be tomorrow. In fact, we will watch closely tomorrow for a slight
chance of a few of the thunderstorms becoming severe. The onset of the
rain seems to have backed off slightly. We may see a few showers late
tonight well past midnight. For Friday, the more numerous showers and
thunderstorms will be from midday on. The showers and storms will be
numerous at times. Rain will be locally heavy. Most of Alabama is
under a slight risk of severe weather for Friday. Some of the showers
will linger over into Saturday morning, then a break for the
afternoon, only to see some more showers, a fresh batch, arrive
Saturday night. Sunday promises to give us another good chance of
showers and finally the arrival of cooler air will put an end to that
for Monday.

RAIN AMOUNTS: We are still encouraged that a good part of North and
Central Alabama, including the I-20 corridor, will get as much as 2
inches of rain or more between tomorrow morning and Sunday. That will
be huge if we can get that much.

OUTLOOK FOR NEW YEARS DAY: Rather chilly with a morning low near
freezing and an afternoon high near 40. It will even get colder New
Years night dropping to the mid 20s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Independence Bowl in Shreveport Sunday
night, Alabama meets the Colorado Buffaloes for the 7:00 p.m. kick
off. It should be mostly fair and about 56 degrees cooling to 46 to 48
in the fourth quarter. 24 hours later, Auburn meets Clemson in the
Peach Bowl in Atlanta. The weather in Atlanta for Monday will be dry
with a high near 60 and low Monday night 35. Yes, I know, the game is
inside with no weather concern, but thought you might like to have the
outdoor weather, since you will not be in the dome all the time.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Would you believe that Kansas and part of
Oklahoma are going to get some more wintry weather? Snow should become
locally heavy after midnight tonight in Wichita with possible thunder
snow. 4 to 7 inches is expected by Friday morning; 2 to 3 inches for
Northern Oklahoma. It was 25 below zero at Antero Reservoir in
Colorado this morning. The coldest in Alaska was 33 below at Northway.
Kodiak Island, Alaska got 16 inches of new snow in two days. John
Oldshue would love to be there. Valdez has received 81 inches of snow
so far this season.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It makes me feel real good to know that
Little Miss Molly truly loves me. We bonded immediately when she came
to live with us 5 years ago and the bond has grown stronger each day.
The few times I do get my recliner, she likes to come and jump up on
the footrest and nestle right up against my leg. In the big king-size
bed, she will often press her little body right up against me. I catch
myself awakening at intervals during the night and I always take time
to stroke Little Molly and give her belly rubs. You should hear her
moan and groan. She goes right back to sleep and I do too. Life goes
on and it is most enjoyable.

...More Rain Ahead...

In our progressive weather pattern, upper level
disturbances are a dime a dozen. One zipped by last night, delivering
a shot of weakening showers. Rainfall amounts were light, generally
less than a tenth of an inch. Even though last night's rain event was
a non-event, there are fortunately at least two more events upstream.

TODAY: A thick layer of clouds will hang tough through
part of the day today. The amount of time they hold in place will
have a big bearing on the temperatures. It they clear by lunch, we
should be able to reach 60 degrees. More clouds, a little cooler.
And vice versa. Clouds will increase rapidly tonight in advance of
our next disturbance.

MORE RAIN AND STORMS: AN area of rain and thunderstorms
will enter western sections of the state overnight tonight and
progress across the area Friday. There could be strong storms
involved, especially Friday afternoon. Rainfall amounts should be on
the solid side, around an inch. A cold front will push into the area
Friday night, clearing our skies.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: Saturday looks like a nice transition
day, with a sunny start. But clouds will be on the increase late in
the day as a disturbance pulls moisture north up over the old frontal
boundary. This makes for an efficient rainmaking situation. Rain
should overspread the area late Saturday night. Sunday looks to be a
wet day. Many areas may pick up between three quarters of an inch and
one inch of rain. A strong cold front will push through the area
Sunday night, followed by strong westerly and northwesterly winds and
cooler air.

MUCH COLDER NEXT WEEK: A secondary cold front will push
through the area on Monday, marking the leading edge of a surge of
much colder air. Some of the coldest air we have seen in some time
will headline next week's weather. We should be below freezing over
the north half of the state by New Years morning and struggle to get
out of the 30s New Years Day. The northern third of the area will
struggle to get above freezing at all Wednesday. A warming trend will
take hold by Thursday and moderating conditions will be felt through
the weekend as a ridge of high pressure radiating down from New
England stays in control of Alabama's weather. That will be the other
weather headline next week: dry conditions. After Sunday, we may not
see any rain for ten days.

DENVER WHITE CHRISTMAS: 7.8 inches of snow fell on
Christmas Day in Denver, the most Christmas snow ever recorded in the
Mile High City. It was the first time it had snowed on Christmas
since 2000. A winter storm warning is in effect for Metro Denver for
today as another 7 inches of snow is expected to fall.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Dense fog in the Tampa Bay area
caused a series of chain reaction accidents on the soaring Sunshine
Skyway Bridge, involving 50 vehicles. One person
was killed and 24 injured. The 1280-foot span across the mouth of
Tampa Bay was closed in both directions.

...Several Rain Events...

ALABAMA WEATHER TRENDING WETTER: We look for at least four rain
events across Alabama between now and before the weekend is over. At
some point along the way, we may get between 2 and 3 inches of rain.
The latest estimate, from the NWS unit that estimates rain amounts,
shows about 3.50 inches across Central Alabama and much of North
Alabama between now and early Monday. As we have said many times, we
have to use those estimates with caution. A number of things could
happen that could cut down on the amounts.Much of East Alabama got a
slow, steady, cold rain yesterday with ½ to 2/3 of an inch fairly
common. West Alabama did not get any. Already, the next storm system
is approaching from the west. By mid afternoon today, a broad band of
showers, along with a few thunderstorms, had spread across Louisiana
and entering Mississippi. Those showers and storms will move east
across Alabama tonight. We will get a break during the day tomorrow
only to see showers and thunderstorms again by late Thursday night.

OUR BIG DAY FRIDAY: We still believe that Friday will bring our most
beneficial rain. Showers and thunderstorms will be numerous at times
and a number of locations should receive well over 1 inch. After those
move away, most of Saturday will be dry, but a chance of showers again
Saturday night and a good chance on Sunday. Meanwhile, temperatures
will be moderate. Most of the high temperatures for the next five days
will vary from 58 to 64 and lows at night mostly in the 40s. We do not
see a sharp change to colder until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Southern California has been pestered with the
Santa Ana wind over the last couple of days. A peak gust of 107 mph
was clocked at Thousand Oaks. Denver dropped to 2 above zero this
morning and they had their biggest Christmas snow in many years.
Another storm system was expected to dump between 10 and 20 inches of
snow over parts of Northern Utah and Western Colorado. Warmest in the
USA for Christmas Day was 81 at Ft. Lauderdale and Ft. Myers, Florida.
Cold temperatures this morning included 17 below at Alamosa, Colorado
and 35 below at Kaltag, Alaska. Our pick spot for the day, where you
would not want to be, is Cold Bay, Alaska with snow, blowing snow and
fog and wind gusts as high as 69 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We only got a trace of drizzle in NE
Jefferson County last night. All of the good rain amounts were to the
east and those were sort of illegal, because we did not have them
properly forecast. Got a chance to walk with Little Miss Molly
several times Christmas Day and it is the most refreshing thing I do
on most days. She has had a lot of luck meeting her little boyfriend,
the Yorkie, partway up the walking track. Even if she does not see
him, she plops down overlooking his backyard and cries like a baby
hoping he will come out. I have still not fired up my first digital
camera, but I am going to right away, with one of the first pictures
being the Old Crow Motel that Molly and I enjoy passing by every day.
Life goes on.

...Bust A Sign of Changes To Come?...

A very nice person wrote me yesterday morning and commented about how
difficult it was to forecast winter weather. An obvious reference to
how bad my busted forecast was yesterday. We had been tracking a
strong disturbance as it moved out of the Rockies and headed our way.
On Monday, our most important forecasting model started to poo-poo the
system, saying that it would have little to work with in the way of
moisture while it was over Alabama. Well, this has been the general
trend in reality since the Spring. Every storm system that has been
hyped and ballyhooed has petered out to nothing it seems. So it was
easy to buy into the idea of a weakening and dry system for Christmas
Day. Turned out that the system closed off into an upper low and
produced some widespread, although generally light rainfall amounts
over eastern and southern Alabama. There was even quite a bit of
excitement as sleet occurred in some areas. So, I am hoping that the
bust is a sign of things to come. The law of averages has to come our
way for awhile, and we should start busting in favor of too much
rainfall. Buy my logic? One can only hope.

DROUGHT DENTING RAINS AHEAD? A minor ridge of high pressure is over
Alabama this morning, giving us a fine December morning. But things
will be changing quickly in this progressive weather pattern we are
in. Another disturbance is already swinging our way. Clouds will be
on the increase late this afternoon and showers will enter the picture
overnight tonight. Showers will be possible through tomorrow as a
weak front settles into our area.

STRONG SYSTEM THURSDAY NIGHT/FRIDAY: A stronger system will begin to
affect Alabama Thursday night. Moisture will surge northward and rain
and storms will begin to grow late Thursday night, especially after
midnight. Storms could become severe as far north as I-20 during the
overnight. Rain and storms will continue through much of the day
Friday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday should be dry. Now, the models are all
over the board, but it looks like Sunday could feature another
developing system over the Gulf that will spread rains our way on
Sunday again. They could be more to the south this time, but
hopefully they will extend far enough north to bring more beneficial
rains to much of the area.

CHANGE TO MUCH COLDER: The rains should depart Sunday night, but the
main cold front will not arrive until Monday night. Much colder air
will spread into Alabama on New Years Day. There are signs that we
could stay below freezing all day Wednesday, with readings down to
near 20 Wednesday night. No storm systems in sight during that time,
however.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City
recorded its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on
the 27th, Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest
snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs.
Because the storm was not accompanied by strong winds, it was not a
blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a standstill. 27 deaths
occurred as a result of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated 10
million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19 inches of snow fell in
just six hours at White Plains NY.

...A Dry Wednesday...

A GOOD RAIN EVENT THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: Blame it on an upper-level
disturbance that became stronger overnight to the west of Alabama. The
circulation around that system brought in a good thick cloud cover and
moisture to the state. However, the only areas that benefited from any
rain was over the eastern third of the state. Even there, it was not
much. Most communities got only about ¼ inch of rain and by mid
afternoon the more significant radar returns had shifted into West
Georgia. West Alabama did not get any rain. There was also a few
reports of sleet over the eastern counties. Probably the most
significant report came from Cherokee County where the sleet was
described as briefly heavy. There were no accumulations or icing
problems at all. This weather system did create an explosion of
interest in the possibility of a white Christmas. That will have to be
postponed to another year. There was little or no chance of it
occurring this year.Clouds will gradually erode from west to east
tonight and temperatures will drop to near freezing. We look for a dry
day Wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds. High temperatures will be
close to 60 Wednesday and Thursday. As the day wears on Thursday,
showers will start moving in becoming numerous Thursday night and a
thunderstorm is also possible. The Storm Prediction Center has SW
Alabama under a slight risk for Thursday. This is from about
Tuscaloosa and Birmingham southwestward. We can finetune that later.
Showers and thunderstorms will also be prominent on Friday with some
beneficial rain likely. The showers should wind down Saturday morning
as it turns cooler.

HOW MUCH RAIN? The people in Washington that concentrate on how much
precipitation will occur in various weather systems, give a large part
of Central and NE Alabama 4 inches of rain between now and Sunday
morning most of that being later Thursday and Friday. We always
approach this possibility with some caution, especially in a drought,
but it does look like we are trending to more of a wet weather
pattern. A 4-inch rain total would be the greatest Christmas present
imaginable for Lake Purdy and numerous other Alabama reservoirs.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 41% of the lower 48 states were covered by snow
on this Christmas morning. The south edge of the snow cover extends
from extreme North Oklahoma across Central Missouri and into the Great
Lakes. Cold temperatures this morning included 14 below at Alamosa,
Colorado and 29 below at Beaver, Alaska. Whittier, Alaska is always a
good place to check, if you want a lot of snow. They have 26 inches on
the ground. In the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah 20 more inches
of new snow in the last 24 hours at Alta, bringing the total on the
ground to 63 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our in-house motel has temporarily lost
some visitors until January 7 when our granddaughter and her family
(including two young babies) went back to Russellville to spend
Christmas with his family. The noise level is down by 63% today
because of that and Molly has been sleeping like a log all day. On two
walks late yesterday and this morning, she got to rub noses with the
little Yorkie up the street that she wants to marry. That is the
greatest Christmas present she could ask for. Nothing makes her
happier. My only Christmas present to Miss Molly were two old socks.
That made her as happy as me getting $500 of new clothes. Life goes
on. Happiness is relative.

...Merry Christmas!...

Fine weather conditions across Central Alabama on this
Christmas morning with mostly clear skies and seasonably chilly
readings around freezing. Santa was guided by one of the most
brilliant full moons in recent memory last night, making his rounds
with little in the way of weather to bother him.

OUR FORECAST: A disturbance is passing through Alabama
today, but it has little to work with in the way of moisture. As it
enters Georgia, it will start to pick up some Atlantic moisture, and
there could be a few light showers in the Peach State. I guess there
could be a sprinkle back into Alabama, but the chances are small.
Everyone has been pulling for at least a few snowflakes for an Alabama
version of White Christmas, but no such luck. With a mix of sun and
clouds today, temperatures will warm into the upper 50s to near 60.
With clear skies and calm conditions tonight, temperatures will settle
to near freezing again. Tomorrow looks a lot like today, with partly
cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 60s.

BATTLEGROUND STATE: Changes will come starting tomorrow
night as a disturbance rotates our way. This will increase our clouds
late this afternoon, with showers reappearing on a radar near you
tomorrow night. Showers will be in the forecast for much of the day
on Thursday. Meanwhile, high pressure off the southeastern U.S.
coast will remain stubbornly in place as the disturbance passes by to
our north. Alabama will remain in the battle zone between the high
and the trough to the northwest. A nice round of rain and storms
should occur on Friday, with another on Saturday night, and a final
one on New Years Eve. Actual timing may vary.

CRITCAL FIRE CONDITIONS FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: High
pressure setting up over the southwestern states will produce
dangerous fire weather conditions today as winds of 30-40 mph blow
from the northeast to the south of the Coastal Range. Santa Ana winds
will accelerate through favored passes, with gusts to 70 mph today.
The only thing keeping the outlook from becoming extreme today will be
recent rains from a cold front.

GULF COAST WHITE CHRISTMAS: Back on December 25, 2004,
a vigorous low pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico traveled along
a path that was perfect for producing snowfall along the coast and
just inland. The snow began on the evening of the 24th, and by
Christmas morning, residents were enjoying a traditional White
Christmas. Galveston and Port Aransas, which are directly on the Gulf
of Mexico picked up three and four inches of snow respectively.
Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas, picked up 1.5 inches, their
first measurable snow since 1895. The snowfall of 4.4 inches at Corpus
Christi established a new record for a single storm in the Texas
coastal city. Nearby Victoria, Texas picked up 13 inches of snow,
their first White Christmas in eighty six years. New Orleans received
one half inch of snow on Christmas Day. It marked the only time since
weather records began there in 1852 that the Crescent City enjoyed a
White Christmas. Measurable snow has only been observed fifteen times
in New Orleans. It was the last measurable snow since 1989, when ½
inch fell on December 22, but melted before Christmas Day.

...A Dry Christmas Day...

GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN LATE THIS WEEK: Some middle clouds moved across
Central Alabama today, more than we had expected, so it did not get
quite as warm as we had anticipated. At mid afternoon, it was only in
the upper 40s over the north half of the state and in the lower 50s
down south. We do expect some break in the clouds tonight. With the
air still being very dry across the area, we expect low temperatures
by morning to be around 30 and some of the colder valleys could have
upper 20s.

CHRISTMAS DAY: The old thermometer should top out close to 60. We
expect considerable sunshine, although there will be some clouds at
times. Dry weather is expected on Wednesday and then we get into a wet-
weather pattern starting on Thursday. We believe that we have a good
chance to get a good rain event in the Thursday/Friday timeframe. The
total for those two days could exceed one inch. Latest indications are
that Saturday will be dry.
Low temperatures across the state this morning included some upper
teens in some of the colder spots in NE Alabama. It was 23 at Gadsden
Airport, 24 in Anniston, Moody and Jasper, 25 in Decatur, Haleyville
and Troy, and 26 in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa. A little further south
it was 27 in Birmingham and Montgomery.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Most of the USA was free of thunderstorms
today. That is fairly rare, even in mid winter, but not unheard of.
Some folks were still having winter weather problems, but the heavy
snow and high winds of recent days were not near as prominent as
today. This afternoon there was snow over upstate New York and over
parts of the Mountain West, especially Northern Utah and SE Idaho. The
coldest temperature in the lower 48 this morning was 22 below zero at
Alamosa, Colorado. That city is in a high mountain valley in the south/
central part of that state. It was 32 below at Alaska at Chalkyitsik.
Valdez has 23 inches of snow on the ground. The NWS in Kodiak posted a
Heavy Freezing Spray Warning with lots of snow and 18-foot seas. Wind
gusts tonight could reach as high as 80 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What a day, what a day! This was our
designated Christmas and we had 21 people in Molly's house for a big
Christmas meal and opening of presents. I wish you could have seen
Molly. Over half of the people here were youngsters and we noticed
Molly seeking out hidden corners to try to have some peace and quiet.
One of my presents was a digital camera—my first one ever. So, I am
being dragged kicking and screaming into the digital age after
spending years and years doing a lot of photography with film cameras.
First thing I am going to photograph is not our new grandbaby.
Instead, I want to get a sunrise silhouette of the Old Crow Motel.
Little Miss Molly has been cut way short on her daytime naps because
of all the noise and traffic. People were moving around in our house
past midnight last night, so she was glad to retreat to the master
bedroom for a little peace and quiet. No time for a ballgame with her
today. It was wall-to-wall work. But life goes on and this is a very
special season and time to be thankful.

...Santa Claus Is Coming To Town...

We are getting off to a beautiful start on this Christmas Eve across
Central Alabama with seasonably cold conditions and crystal clear
skies this morning. Temperatures are generally in the middle and
upper 20s. A southwesterly flow aloft will spread some high clouds
across the area during the day. Meanwhile, an upper disturbance will
swing out of West Texas heading our way. This disturbance should be
weakening and will dive further south than we expected. This should
keep it from causing any problems for us. So Santa should have very
few problems as he makes his way into Alabama late tonight. I am sure
the flight planners at the North Pole will be checking the terminal
forecasts for our area for tonight. It looks like a few broken clouds
thinning after midnight. Visibility should be about 7 miles, with no
restrictions. That's good news for good little boys and girls.

CHRISTMAS DAY FORECAST: Indications are now that the disturbance will
be well east of us by tomorrow, leading to mostly sunny skies and
seasonable temperatures. After a light morning freeze, temperatures
will warm to near 60 during the afternoon, giving those good little
boys and girls a chance to play with all their new toys. And to get
outside, giving moms and dads a break.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: We should be in between disturbances on
Wednesday with partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Still
expecting an active weekend ahead. An approaching disturbance will
spread clouds back into the area on Thursday with showers possible
during the day. Rain should increase Thursday night. Friday will
feature rain and a chance of thunderstorms. Things will remain
unsettled into Saturday with showers still likely. There are signs
that a bigger wet weather system will move here here late Saturday
night into Sunday. Hopefully, we will see some good rainfall amounts.

SKY TREAT TONIGHT: Step outside this evening and you will be greeted
by a breathtaking sight. The brightest nearly full moon that you may
ever see will be accompanied by a bright orange Mars in the eastern
sky. The moon is riding higher tonight than it will at any point
until 2023, making it seem especially bright, lighting the Christmas
Eve sky with its light. Nearby, the red planet will be at opposition
to the sun, or directly opposite it. It will also be at its closest
to the Earth that it will be in the next nine years. This will make
it seem especially bright also. And being opposite the sun, it will
be visible all night long. So get out this evening and enjoy the sky
show. You might also hear the sound of bells. If you do, scan the
skies for a jolly fatman and eight tiny reindeer. He will be battling
MVRF conditions
and showers by late tonight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Coldest Christmas Eve on record. Over 125
cities recorded record lows for the date, including 17 cities that
established all-time record lows for the month of December. Chicago

...Raw Day...

Skies were clearing rapidly at late morning across Alabama. The thick
stratocumulus cloud deck was slowly thinning and breaking up into
discrete gray-white puffballs. As the drier air works further
eastward, the skies quickly become blue. Winds were slowly
diminishing across the area and will continue out of the west
northwest and northwest through the afternoon, averaging some 6-15
mph. The cold front responsible for the colder air is over Central
Georgia. The intense area of low pressure is over the Great Lakes
states, centered near Iron Mountain, Wisconsin, where the barometer
had dropped to 28.96 inches, as strong as a category one hurricane.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS: Much of the area picked up rainfall over the past
twenty four hours, but rainfall amounts were on the light side. Top
rainfall reports from around Central Alabama from last night: 0.52 at
Blountsville in Blount County; 0.51 at Vincent in Shelby County; 0.49
at Blue Pond in Cherokee County; 0.48 at Roanoke and Jordan Dam; 0.43
in South Pinson and Inverness; 0.42 in Ashby; 0.39 in Trussville; 0.35
in Kimberly; 0.32 in Cordova; 0.31 at Logan Martin; 0.27 in Jemison;
0.24 in Muscadine; 0.19 at Holt Lock and Dam. At the Birmingham
Airport, 0.27 inches fell, 0.48 at the Shelby County Airport and 0.36
inches fell at Pinson.

LIGHT FREEZE TONIGHT: With clear skies and light winds, the mercury
will drop below freezing across much of the area tonight.
Temperatures will generally be in the upper 20s, with a few of the
normally colder locations normally colder.

MOON AND MARS: From http://spaceweather.com.

Please don't miss
this: At sunset on Sunday, Dec. 23rd, the full Moon and Mars will
rise in the east less than two degrees apart. So close together, the
two brightest objects in the evening sky look absolutely dynamite.
The display will be visible all night long, even from brightly lit
cities, and requires no telescope to enjoy.. We will have another
skyshow tomorrow night, but clouds may be a problem.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Some changes in the forecast since last night. The
GFS, our main weather model, has now dropped the idea of showers on
Christmas Day. It now looks like we will have increasing clouds late
in the day tomorrow after a sunny start. Christmas Day looks like it
will be cloudy as a decent disturbance swings through. Wednesday will
feature a short lived ridge over us, but a stronger disturbance will
be headed our way by Thursday. Clouds will be on the increase once
again by then and showers may reach western sections of the area by
late afternoon. Rain should be on the increase into Friday and some
decent rainfall amounts may fall. A second wave of rain will likely
be with us into Sunday. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: A "hybrid" low-pressure system which was a
cross between a tropical storm and typical winter nor'Easter roared
out of the Gulf of Mexico and across New England on the 23rd and
24th. Hurricane force winds were felt in coastal areas. Winds gusted
to 88 mph at Walpole, MA. Nantucket recorded a wind gust to 84 mph.
4.85 inches of rain fell in Plymouth
MA
