...Fine Holiday Weekend...

Lots of folks enjoying a long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial
start to summer here in Alabama. The weather should cooperate, with
warm, dry conditions for the most part.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: A weak stationary boundary is draped just to our
northeast this morning. It will probably trigger a few showers or an
isolated storm this afternoon. Patchy fog and low clouds burned off
rather quickly this morning, giving way to a good supply of sunshine
and partly cloudy skies. Building high pressure will shove the
boundary southwestward and northeasterly winds will bring in slightly
drier air for Sunday and Monday. That means ample sunshine, lower
humidities and warm temperatures in the 80s.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: Tuesday will see another influx of Gulf moisture and
the return of isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms. Rain
chances will be going up on Wednesday as a cold front works its way in
from the north. Showers and storms will be likely on Wednesday
afternoon and night as the front moves through. Scattered storms will
be around into the weekend.

GREENSBURG: A year ago, an EF5 tornado virtually destroyed the Kansas
town of Greensburg. Last night, we watched in horror as another
massive thunderstorm with giant hook echo and 200 knot velocity
couplet bore down on the town. Reports of a massive wedge tornado
started coming in. But fortunately, the tornado missed the
rebuilding town.

TROPICS: Hurricane season began May 15th in the eastern Pacific.
All is quite on that side. The North Atlantic hurricane season begins
on June 1st. A tropical wave steaming across the Atlantic is
forecast by the GFS to grow into a tropical depression in the western
Caribbean next weekend. From there, various runs have taken it to
near New Orleans, Mobile, Destin, Tampa and Fort Myers. It is going to
be interesting. The first named storm will be Arthur.

MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE ACTIVE: Not the ridge of the high
pressure variety, but of the tectonic plate variety. I have been
noticing several rather significant earthquakes in the areas from the
Central Atlantic and Azores in the past week or so. I have always
heard that a large earthquake in this region could generate an ocean-
wide tsunami that could reach the East Coast of the United States. I
am not a geologist and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last
night, so I am not sure if any of this is a real concern, but it is
interesting.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A month long heat wave continued
to bake India with temperatures as high as 124F. The state of Andrha
Pradesh was hardest hits with reports that as many as 624 people had
died in the heat wave by the 24th. Some reports placed the number at
over one thousand. Meteorologists blamed the excessive heat on hot,
dry northeasterly winds off of the desert regions. While some blamed
it on global warming, weather officials were quick to point out that
heat waves always precede the monsoons. In fact, it is the rising air
of the hot high pressure that draws the moisture-laden monsoon winds
in by early June in southern India and across the rest of the country
in the following weeks.

...Summertime...

SUM, SUM, SUMMERTIME…It's summertime! At least in some folks' book.
Memorial Day generally is the unofficial start to summer for many. We
weather humans consider June 1 the start of meteorological summer. Of
course, our astronomical friends will insist that summer officially
begins on June 21st at midnight Greenwich Mean Time, which will be 7
p.m. CDT on June 20th, here in Alabama.

GOOD LOOKING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: The weather for this
Memorial Day weekend will be quite nice with warm and mostly dry
conditions through Monday. A little patchy fog will burn off early
today, giving way to a good deal of sunshine by late morning. It will
still be on the muggy side today with a small chance of an afternoon
storm.

High pressure over the upper Great Lakes will drop down
to near the Pennsylvania and Ohio border by Sunday morning. This high
will be the main feature in our weather through Monday. Temperatures
will be warm, with highs in the upper 80s all three days. Lows will
be in the 60s. Humidity levels will drop a bit tomorrow and Monday as
northeasterly winds bring in a little drier air.

BEACH BOUND: Great time to be at the beach. Partly
cloudy and warm with highs in the middle to upper 80s. Just a slight
chance of a shower or storm. Sea water temperatures are in the upper
70s to near 80, which is quite nice in my book.

BACK TO WORK: The folks who aren't heading to the beach
are probably heading back to work Tuesday. By then, the surface flow
will become more southerly and moisture levels will be on the rise
again. This moeans more humidity, and the return of a slight chance
of showers and storms. By Wednesday, high pressure over the Great
Lakes will be propelling a front southward toward Alabama. Right now,
the GFS is fairly bullish on rain and storm chances for Wednesday, so
we will call for just that. Thursday, the front will likely still be
in t he area with a continued chance of showers and storms developing
with the heat of the day. Scattered showers and storms will be the
norm as we head back into the weekend.

HURRICANE SEASON NOT FAR OFF: Don't look now, but the
Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1, or next Sunday. As if on
cue, the GFS paints a developing tropical system in the Northwest
Caribbean lurking stage left by next weekend. It has been amazingly
consistent in painting this possibility for a week now. It would
likely move north, and all bets are off this early in the game. The
latest runs have been picking South Florida up to Tampa as likely
areas to be affected. Good news: such a storm would not be strong.

ON THIS DATE IN 1973: :The Union City, Oklahoma tornado
was the first storm to be studied in detail by the National Severe
Storms Laboratory Doppler Radar Unit, as well as an armada of
researchers. Research of the radar data from the storm would lead to
discovery of the TVS – or Tornado Vortex Signature. The presence of
a TVS on Doppler radar data is a very strong indication of tornadic
potential in a severe thunderstorm. More about the event in today's
AlabamaWx.com blog.

...Very Warm Afternoons...

A WARM DRY MEMORIAL DAY: Looking good for the Memorial Day weekend
across Central Alabama. We will need to mention an isolated afternoon
thunderstorm tomorrow, but you probably will not see one. For Sunday
and Monday, it looks like a warm dry period and mostly sunshine. High
temperatures Sunday and Monday will be in the mid 80s and maybe a few
upper 80s. The humidity will be just a little lower on Sunday as a NE
breeze arrives. Even by next Tuesday, the chance of a shower or
thunderstorm will still be very small.

North Alabama has been mostly dry today, but a pesky
little cluster of thunderstorms along the Alabama/Georgia border kept
redeveloping and did not want to move much. Those affected only a part
of Cleburne and Randolph Counties. There were some better showers down
over SW Alabama from about Livingston and Greensboro southward, but
they were moving toward the ESE. Most of those will be out of the area
tonight. The dew point (by far the best measure of moisture in the
air), was in the 60s all the way from the beaches to the Tennessee
River. Translation: the humidity is more noticeable today.

HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH: The sea surface temperature just
off shore is around 80. It looks like a generally nice weather
situation all the way through Memorial Day. There will be a few
showers and thunderstorms over the weekend, but most areas will be
dry. High temperatures will be 85 to 88 and a bit hotter inland.

HOLIDAY IN THE MOUNTAINS: No widespread showers and
thunderstorms expected in the Gatlinburg area and Great Smoky
Mountains through Tuesday. In fact, it looks like mostly sunshine and
dry weather for both Sunday and Monday. Nights will be comfortable
with lows around 50 and in the 40s in the mountains. High temperatures
for the next several days will vary from 76 to 83.

SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: Another Moderate Risk for this
afternoon and tonight from Central Kansas through Western Nebraska. A
Slight Risk covers a larger area from Oklahoma through Eastern
Wyoming. Sure has been a rough time in Kansas, Eastern Colorado and SE
Wyoming. There were numerous reports of tornadoes yesterday. Of
course, that number will fall after surveys are made. Hardest hit was
Windsor in North Colorado east and SE of Ft. Collins where there was 1
fatality and a number of injuries.

FINAL THOUGHTS: How about that Western snow? Here it is
almost June 1, when we weather humans consider the beginning of summer
and in the last 24 to 36 hours, heavy snow has blanketed higher
elevations from Wyoming to Arizona. 16 inches of new snow fell at
Mystic Lake, Montana, 10 inches at Paradise Ranger Station at Mt.
Rainier National Park. Even around Flagstaff, Arizona as much as 6 to
12 inches of snow is expected to accumulate above 7,500 feet by
tomorrow morning. The highest elevations in Arizona, the San Francisco
Peaks, are in the vicinity of Flagstaff…107 in Laredo was the hottest
in the nation yesterday…coldest this morning was 23 at Eureka, Nevada…
hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend. Drive safely. Please
do not tailgate.

...Warm Memorial Day Weekend...

LET SUMMER BEGIN: For most of us, Memorial Day weekend marks the
beginning of summer. In the weather business, we consider
"meteorological summer" beginning on June 1, and in terms of
astronomy, the summer solstice is June 20 at 6:59 p.m. Whatever, our
warmest season of the year is upon us, and I hope you enjoy a long
weekend.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: A moist airmass covers Alabama today, and
we will continue to mention the chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. The
chance of any one spot getting wet today is about one in five, and
most of the showers and storms (but not necessarily all of them) will
come from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. We should also mention that today will
be very warm, with a high in the upper 80s in most spots. High
dewpoints will make it feel even warmer.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Tomorrow will be partly sunny and warm
with just a few isolated showers or storms, then by Sunday and Monday
we expect mostly sunny weather with little if any chance of rain
thanks to an upper air high overhead. Highs over the weekend will
generally remain in the mid to upper 80s.

AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and storms are possible today and
Saturday from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores, but expect about 4
to 6 hours of sunshine each day. The high along the immediate coast
will be close to 80, and the sea surface temperatures are running in
the upper 70s along the coast. The weather looks mostly dry Sunday and
Monday with a sunny sky both days.

COLORADO TORNADOES: A large tornado ripped through several northern
Colorado towns yesterday, damaging buildings, flipping vehicles and
killing at least one person. Windsor, a farm town of about 16,000,
appeared hardest hit. Video footage showed a dark gray funnel perhaps
a quarter-mile wide near the town with heavy hail and rain. At least
one residential neighborhood in Windsor appeared to have suffered
heavy damage. Television footage showed several rail tanker cars lying
on their sides in downtown Windsor. Other tornadoes were reported late
yesterday and last night in parts of Kansas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service in San Diego actually issued three
tornado warnings for extreme southern California, but there were no
immediate reports of damage. The same big weather system is producing
lots of snow in the mountains out west; snow is likely today as far
south as Flagstaff, Arizona. Some of the mountain peaks near Flagstaff
will see 6 to 12 inches of snow. As much as 20 inches will fall in
parts of Wyoming and the higher elevations in Colorado.

EXTREMES: The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Laredo, Texas
with 107 degrees; the cold spots were Barrow...Dead
Horse...Kotzebue...Nuiqsut, all in Alaska, with 20 degrees.

...Moist Air Spreading Northward...

FLIRTING WITH 90 TOMORROW: A short line of thunderstorms developed
over West/Central Alabama this morning and moved northward. A couple
of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued, but there were no
confirmed reports of damage or hail. 33/40 skywatchers reported ½ inch
of rain in only 15 minutes at Millport in extreme South Lamar County
and 0.36 at Reform in North Pickens County. This afternoon, that
little band of showers and storms was still moving slowly northward.

Not only is the humidity going up, but the temperature as
well. Some communities tomorrow will reach the 90-degree mark,
especially over on the west side of the state in places like
Tuscaloosa. For some reason, 90 sounds quite a bit hotter than 89
psychologically. Maybe that is just me.

We do not see any big widespread rain events all the way
into the middle of next week. There will be some widely spaced storms
each day through Saturday. Your chance of getting wet is only about 1
in 5. During the day Saturday, a cool front of sorts will push
southward into our area. This will give us lower humidity on Sunday
and Monday will also be mostly sunshine. About the only break we will
get on the thermometer, is a low temperature of about 64 Sunday
morning and maybe 58 or 60 in some of the cooler valleys.

TROPICAL FORECAST: The National Weather Service issued
their seasonal tropical storm and hurricane forecast today. It covers
the Atlantic Basin, which means not only the Atlantic Ocean, but the
Caribbean and our good friend, the Gulf of Mexico. They are calling
for 12 to 16 named storms with 6 to 9 of those reaching hurricane
force and 2 to 5 becoming major hurricanes. This is about 65% above
average for the number of storms. The long-term average is closer to
11. Earlier, Dr. William Gray and his staff of researchers at Colorado
State University called for 15 named storms, including 8 hurricanes
and 4 major ones. The big unanswerable question at the moment is how
many of these will strike the USA coastline. We will have to play out
the season to really know that.

FINAL NOTES: This afternoon a storm spotter discovered a
huge tornado on the ground north of Denver. It continued northward
toward Ft. Collins. It overturned large trucks on the interstate and
for a time it was closed. There were also some earlier reports of some
injuries between Denver and Ft. Collins. The middle part of the
country is going to be where a lot of storm chasers hang out for the
next several days…a huge out-of-control wildfire near the Silicon
Valley in California moving toward hundreds of homes in some of the
canyons…20 was the low in Nuiqsut, Alaska this morning and 27 at
Redmond, Oregon and Grand Canyon Village.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Something else my little pal, Little
Miss Molly, absolutely loves is a rubdown and to gently scratch her
back and her head. It is almost like giving her a half-dozen sleeping
pills. She cannot stay awake. During all of that, she will look us
right in the eye, with her eyes barely open, as if she is trying to
say that she deeply appreciates the treatment. She has got to know
that she is as loved as any dog in the world. Life goes on.

...A Few Scattered Showers or Storms...

HUMIDITY LEVELS RISING: Low level moisture will increase across all of
Alabama today, as an old surface front over South Alabama moves
northward as a warm front. We expect dewpoints in the 60s here by
afternoon, and with the heat of the day we figure scattered showers
and thunderstorms will develop around here. The chance of any one spot
getting wet today is about one in three, and most of the showers and
storms will come from about 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Away from the
showers, the sky will be partly sunny and the temperature this
afternoon will peak in the mid 80s.

Look for very similar weather tomorrow and Saturday; a mix of sun and
clouds with a chance of scattered, mainly afternoon and evening
showers and thunderstorms. Highs will remain in the mid 80s with warm
and muggy conditions continuing. Just what you expect in late May in
Alabama. By Sunday and Monday, high pressure aloft will keep most of
Alabama dry and warm. There is some hint of an easterly flow Sunday,
which could bring in some cooler air, but I still think we get up into
the 80s on Sunday and Monday.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 4 to 7 hours of sunshine on a daily basis
through Saturday with the daily chance of one or two passing showers
or thunderstorms. The weather looks mostly dry by Sunday and Monday
with 8 to 10 hours of sunshine each day. Afternoon highs will remain
close to 80 on the immediate coast; look for mid to upper 80s inland.
The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Seb Lab yesterday
afternoon was 79 degrees. We note that hurricane season begins across
the Atlantic basin June 1. Officials with the National Hurricane
Center and NOAA will reveal their 2008 hurricane season outlook this
morning at 11:00 at the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center at MacDill Air
Force Base in Tampa.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A tornado destroyed the town of Saragosa, Texas.
30 dead and 11 injured in town of only 183 people. 85% of the
buildings in the town were wiped off the face of the earth. Many of
the victims were parents or grandparents of 4-year-old children at a
Head Start recognition ceremony.

MAY HEAT: The hottest temperature on record for the month of May in
Birmingham is 99 degrees; recorded on May 28, 1962 and May 29, 1898.
Our warmest temperature so far in May 2008 is 87 degrees, recorded
Tuesday afternoon (May 20).

HODGEPODGE: A high wind warning is in effect for much of Arizona
today, where scattered to numerous showers and storms will develop
under a deep upper low. Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Wink, Texas with 108 degrees. There is a risk of severe weather today
across the Great Plains, including a moderate risk over parts of
Kansas. One of the coldest places in the nation yesterday was Grand
Forks, North Dakota with a frosty 27 degrees.

...A Break From the Storms...

HUMIDITY COMES BACK TOMORROW: A nice break from showers and
thunderstorms today after a rather wild late afternoon and evening
yesterday. We note a number of reports of wind damage, especially over
North and East Alabama and quite a few reports of hail. Some of the
largest hail seemed to be in Calhoun County in the vicinity of
Anniston where some of the stones ranged from the size of quarters to
the size of half dollars. That can really play havoc with your
windshield and windows if there are very many stones.

Our friend, the cool front that caused all of that in the
first place, pushed down into South Alabama and stopped to rest. It
will head back northward tomorrow bringing some higher humidity with
it, so we have to look for some more scattered showers and
thunderstorms by tomorrow afternoon. There will also be some scattered
ones on Friday and Saturday as high temperatures edge upward into the
85 to 87-degree range.

WEDGE ON SUNDAY? Our latest prog charts shows a fairly
strong high-pressure area centered over Lake Superior Saturday and
moving SE with a high over Virginia on Sunday. This is going to set up
an easterly wind flow—what we call the wedge. We think it will drop
high temperatures in Central Alabama to about 83 on Sunday with a nice
easterly breeze and few, if any, showers. In fact, we are saying
mostly sunny weather on Sunday.

MEMORIAL DAY: We see little or no threat of showers or
thunderstorms Monday with highs in the mid 80s and early morning lows
around 65. Down on the Alabama/NW Florida coast, high temperatures
will be in the 87 to 90-degree range Sunday and Monday with only a
small risk of a shower or storm on Memorial Day. Off shore water
temperatures are getting close to 80.

SEVERE WEATHER: The SE corner of Alabama was under
a Severe Thunderstorm Warning this afternoon that goes until 10:00
tonight. That also affected North Florida and South Georgia. It is
interesting to note that the severe thunderstorms late yesterday and
last evening seemed to cause the most damage in Cherokee County,
Alabama and Cherokee County, Georgia. The NWS in Atlanta did a storm
survey and found that an EF1 tornado ¾ to 1 mile wide cut a path 5
miles long five miles SE of Holly Springs, Georgia in Cherokee County.
Over 100 homes were damaged. Hail 2-3/4 inch in diameter fell in the
area. In Cherokee County, Alabama, lightning also killed a horse 4
miles south of Centre.

FINAL THOUGHTS: 26 inches of snow still on the
ground at Whittier, Alaska…it was 19 in that 50th state this morning
in Nuiqsut…in the lower 48, the coldest was 27 at Grand Forks, North
Dakota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The mean old
thunderstorm and the vicious lightning erupted in a hurry. Little Miss
Molly did not have the advantage of hearing some distant thunder and
going on alert earlier. She was very apprehensive when the lightning
started popping all around us. She and the minority owner were scared.
The majority owner cuddled Molly in her arms and covered her with a
blanket except for her head and that seemed to console her some. I
went to check on her too and she had a very worried look on her face
as she peeped out at me from under her blanket. I sure feel sorry for
the little ones in times like that. They have to depend on us for
protection. Mean old dog tried 3 times to force his way through the
hedgerow to attack Molly this morning. He got his head through, but
got tangled up. This despite his electronic collar that is supposed to
keep him in check. Molly abruptly did a 180 and headed home. Life goes
on.

ISRAEL & NEW BREED, MARTHA MUNIZZI HEADLINE
"ONE CITY, ONE CHURCH, ONE STAGE" AT CITY STAGES

Last year, City Stages turned one of its main stages over to gospel
music for an entire day. This year "One City, One Church, One Stage"
returns with even bigger names for a full Father's Day of Christian
music.

Grammy award-winner Israel & New Breed and Stellar Award winner
Martha Munizzi are among the headliners for the second annual OCOCOS.

Also on the bill: Canton Jones, William Murphy, the Birmingham Mass
Community Choir and The Basement, who were responsible for one
of the most moving sets the Coca-Cola Classic Stage has ever witnessed
when they wrapped up the evening last year.

Tickets to the 20th Annual City Stages are on sale now at area locations
of Books-A-Million, Moe's and Publix, as well as all Ticketmaster
locations and ticketmaster.com.

Or, phone 205-715-6000 or 800-277-1700. More info at http://www.citystages.org

...Lots of Sunshine Today; Less Humid...

COOLER AND LESS HUMID: Noticeably drier air drops into Alabama today
following a surface front that brought strong to severe thunderstorms
to parts of Alabama yesterday and last night. Today's high will be
close to 80 degrees with a fresh northwest breeze and low humidity.
Dry air means no rain for the northern half of the state.

MUGGY AIR RETURNS TOMORROW: The front will move northward as a warm
front late tonight and tomorrow, and moist air will return to the
northern half of the state. Accordingly, we will bring back the chance
of scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Friday; the chance
of any one spot getting wet on these days is about one in three, and
the best chance of a shower or storm will come during the afternoon
and evening hours, during the peak of the daytime heating process.
Otherwise, we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow and
Friday with a high in the low to mid 80s.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: While we will hang to the chance of a shower or
thunderstorm on Saturday in scattered spots, an upper air ridge takes
over Sunday and Monday, providing generally dry and warm weather with
lots of sunshine. Highs over the weekend will stay in the 80s.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of folks headed to the Gulf Coast now that school
is ending and the Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching. Today will
be mostly dry with a high near 80. Then, tomorrow through Sunday each
day will feature about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine along with a few
scattered showers and thunderstorms. Looks like the best coverage of
showers and storms along the coast will be on Friday, but even then it
won't rain all day. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island
Sea Lab last night was 79 degrees.

SEVERE STORMS YESTERDAY: While a fairly high percentage of Alabama did
not get a drop of rain yesterday, scattered thunderstorms did become
severe over parts of North and East Alabama. A tornado warning was
issued for Cherokee County for about 45 minutes; storm damage was
reported in Sand Rock, Leesburg, and Centre. That same storm was also
responsible for some damage in DeKalb County near Collinsville. Other
storms produced hail and highs winds in parts of Blount, Cullman,
Morgan, and St. Clair counties. The thunderstorms also produced damage
in Georgia; the community of Holly Springs reported significant
damage. One of the heavier rain totals was 1.12" at Remlap. The total
in Northeast Etowah County was 0.90", where a number of large trees
were blown down between the communities of Scrougeout and Black Creek.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: A tropical downpour was responsible for 1.03" at
San Juan, Puerto Rico yesterday. Hottest spot in the nation was Death
Valley, CA with 117. will be noticeably cooler during the latter half
of the week as an upper air low forms over the region. The low
yesterday morning was 14 at Lolo Hot Springs, Montana (what a name!).
