FARMER'S MARKET TIME IN CALHOUN COUNTY!

The Calhoun County Farmers Market will be open this week to provide
local goods for your holiday enjoyment. Locally grown produce and
plants as well as home made goods and crafts will be available.

The Calhoun County Farmers Market is on Wednesdays and Saturdays
at 1702 Noble Street in Anniston. Arrive by 8 am for best selection.

The Buckner Market begins promptly at 8 am each Tuesday at
Pickette's Feed and Pet Supplies, 8 am to noon, until our FallFest
on October 18. They will also be at Zinn Park on Saturdays beginning
June 21.

...Fine Holiday Weekend...

Lots of folks enjoying a long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial
start to summer here in Alabama. The weather should cooperate, with
warm, dry conditions for the most part.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: A weak stationary boundary is draped just to our
northeast this morning. It will probably trigger a few showers or an
isolated storm this afternoon. Patchy fog and low clouds burned off
rather quickly this morning, giving way to a good supply of sunshine
and partly cloudy skies. Building high pressure will shove the
boundary southwestward and northeasterly winds will bring in slightly
drier air for Sunday and Monday. That means ample sunshine, lower
humidities and warm temperatures in the 80s.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: Tuesday will see another influx of Gulf moisture and
the return of isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms. Rain
chances will be going up on Wednesday as a cold front works its way in
from the north. Showers and storms will be likely on Wednesday
afternoon and night as the front moves through. Scattered storms will
be around into the weekend.

GREENSBURG: A year ago, an EF5 tornado virtually destroyed the Kansas
town of Greensburg. Last night, we watched in horror as another
massive thunderstorm with giant hook echo and 200 knot velocity
couplet bore down on the town. Reports of a massive wedge tornado
started coming in. But fortunately, the tornado missed the
rebuilding town.

TROPICS: Hurricane season began May 15th in the eastern Pacific.
All is quite on that side. The North Atlantic hurricane season begins
on June 1st. A tropical wave steaming across the Atlantic is
forecast by the GFS to grow into a tropical depression in the western
Caribbean next weekend. From there, various runs have taken it to
near New Orleans, Mobile, Destin, Tampa and Fort Myers. It is going to
be interesting. The first named storm will be Arthur.

MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE ACTIVE: Not the ridge of the high
pressure variety, but of the tectonic plate variety. I have been
noticing several rather significant earthquakes in the areas from the
Central Atlantic and Azores in the past week or so. I have always
heard that a large earthquake in this region could generate an ocean-
wide tsunami that could reach the East Coast of the United States. I
am not a geologist and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last
night, so I am not sure if any of this is a real concern, but it is
interesting.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A month long heat wave continued
to bake India with temperatures as high as 124F. The state of Andrha
Pradesh was hardest hits with reports that as many as 624 people had
died in the heat wave by the 24th. Some reports placed the number at
over one thousand. Meteorologists blamed the excessive heat on hot,
dry northeasterly winds off of the desert regions. While some blamed
it on global warming, weather officials were quick to point out that
heat waves always precede the monsoons. In fact, it is the rising air
of the hot high pressure that draws the moisture-laden monsoon winds
in by early June in southern India and across the rest of the country
in the following weeks.
