...Cool Weather Continues...

A chilly start to the morning across Alabama. Some morning lows
included: 20F at Crossville, 21F at Decatur, 23F at Muscle Shoals,
Fort Payne and Tuscaloosa, 24F at Huntsville, 25F at Anniston, 26F at
the Birmingham Airport, 27F at Calera, 28F at the Cullman Airport and
30F at Selma.

SPRINKLES: A few light precipitation returns showed up on radar this
morning across the Tennessee Valley. They are associated with a
fairly potent disturbance swinging southeastward in the upper flow.
The disturbance doesn't have much to work with in the way of moisture,
so it is mainly producing a thick layer of clouds. No official
reports of precipitation hitting the ground were received through
noon., but I would not be surprised to hear of a few light sprinkles.
Temperature profiles were warm above the surface, and as surface
readings were generally above freezing, any sprinkles that did occur
didn't cause any freezing or frozen precipitation problems.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Skies were fairly cloudy across Alabama at late
morning. These are the clouds from the disturbance. They will help
to hold temperatures down today, and some spots will likely not make
it out of the 40s. Skies should clear tonight, and temperatures will
fall back well into the 20s. Sunday will be sunny, but chilly, with
highs staying in the 40s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A complicated forecast. Our winds turn southerly
Sunday night. Monday is dry with temperatures in the 50s. Clouds
will be on the increase late with a shower possible by morning. It
will become breezy overnight and Tuesday will be windy with increasing
rain and thunderstorm chances. There could be a few strong storms;
especially the further south you go, but severe weather does not look
to be a widespread problem. The best chance for rain should come
during the overnight hours when rainfall could be heavy. Two inch
rainfall amounts look possible with this system. The rain should end
from the west early Wednesday morning, but residual moisture will
produce some light rain during the day with falling temperatures and a
chill northwest wind. The GFS hints at a little wintry precipitation
Wednesday night across portions of the area. That is plausible, but
the model runs have been inconsistent. Thursday looks like a sunny
but raw day, with readings hanging in the 30s all day. Look for some
of the coldest readings so far this season by Friday morning with
highs remaining in the 30s on Friday also. A quick transition leads
to rain by late Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: New York City and much of the Northeast was
engulfed in a major winter storm that was dumping heavy snows over a
wide area. In the Big Apple, it was the biggest early season snow on
record. Central Park picked up fourteen inches of snow, while up to
twenty four inches fell in Bronx County at Riverdale. Temperatures in
the twenties and winds of up to thirty five mph prompted blizzard
warnings. The Boston area even harder hit with up to thirty inches of
snow reported at Peabody, just north of the city during the two day
storm. The big winner in the snow Olympics was Pinkham Notch, NH,
where a whopping fifty two inches was measured. The huge nor'easter
responsible for the adverse weather deepened as it moved slowly along
the coast, reached a minimum central pressure of 988 millibars.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Ignoring the calendar, which said that the
North Atlantic Hurricane Season was officially over, Tropical Storm
Odette formed in the western Caribbean Sea. The fifteenth named storm
of the season, Odette was the first December Atlantic tropical storm
since Tropical Storm Lili in 1984 and the first December named storm
ever in the Caribbean.

...Dry and Cool Weekend...

A persistent upper trough will keep temperatures across Central
Alabama through the weekend. A passing disturbance will produce some
cloudiness this afternoon. All eyes will turn to the early part of
next week as a complex storm system affects Alabama, with the
potential for some good rainfall amounts, and even some strong storms,
followed by another sharp change to colder.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: We find ourselves under an upper level trough this
morning. Upstream, we can see a fairly potent little disturbance
sliding southeast in the northwesterly flow. This disturbance will
swing through this afternoon, but with little moisture available, the
main affect will be some cloudiness. I can't rule out the very small
chance of a sprinkle, but don't count on it. Temperatures will be
cool through the weekend with highs in the 50s today, and upper 40s on
Sunday. Lows will be in the middle 20s.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: High pressure will slide to the east of Alabama
by Sunday night, allowing our winds to shift around to the southeast.
As it does, temperatures
will moderate and moisture levels will start to go up. Clouds will
begin to increase on Monday, and don't be surprised to see a shower
show up by Tuesday morning. Tuesday will be breezy and milder.
Showers and storms will start in earnest during the afternoon and
continue through the evening hours. A cold front will push through
Wednesday morning, ending the rain from the west. Wednesday will be
blustery and cold with a chill northwest wind and temperatures
fluttering around 50 degrees before falling back during the day.

There are indications that another low will form along the front
Wednesday night and move northeast on Thursday. If it is a little
further west, we could be in for another soaking. If it stays
southeast of us, some rain will wrap back around by Thursday morning.
Needless to say, confidence is currently low in the forecast.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: Skies should clear Thursday night leading
to a clear and cold morning with readings below freezing across the
area. But in a progressive pattern, the high that moves in will move
east quickly. As it does, winds will switch around the southerly
again on Saturday and start the process all over again. We will see
increasing moisture again and the return of shower chances. But it
looks like the main rain event may hold back until the 19th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: The Great Appalachian snowstorm was winding
down. Forty two inches of snow fell during in some locations during
the three-day storm. Asheville, NC picked up thirty three inches of
snow. Rome, GA had twenty five inches. Montgomery had a record
snowfall of eleven inches.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: The National Christmas Tree was toppled by
high winds. Fifty four mph winds in the Nation's Capital blew the
Yule tree over on the Ellipse behind the White House. The seventy
foot spruce had already had a rough and tumble trip from South
Dakota. The train that shipped the tree to the Capital derailed twice!

...A Good Rain Event Coming Up...

COLD AGAIN TONIGHT: It was plenty cold across Alabama last night. A
few of the lows:

22 Oneonta
24 Broomtown
25 Clay/Trussville, Huntsville
26 Birmingham Airport, Pleasant Grove, Concord/Hueytown
28 Cullman
29 Tuscaloosa, Anniston

Tonight a high-pressure area will be drifting over Alabama permitting
the wind to go calm early, so we will have another cold night with
lows generally in the mid 20s. The old thermometer will start
moderating Saturday, but it will still be chilly. We should have a lot
of sunshine until clouds move in later Monday.

THE GATHERING STORM: Looks like the best storm system we have seen in
quite some time will start developing over the Texas Panhandle Monday.
It will move eastward pulling a warm front northward out of the Gulf
of Mexico. We think this will give us a real good rain event Tuesday
and lasting into Wednesday. There is a good chance that Central
Alabama could get 2 to possibly 3 inches of rain from this total storm
system. It is a little early to be that specific, but it does look
encouraging.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Nice weather for the high school championship games
in Birmingham tonight and Saturday, at least for the players. It will
be quite chilly with temperatures below freezing by the time the games
end tonight and peaking only around 50 or so Saturday. If you are
driving over to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game, good driving
weather and high temperatures in Atlanta tomorrow will be around 52.
Of course, you will be inside the dome while you are watching the game.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A Blizzard Warning for SE Wyoming, including the
Laramie area for today. Laramie is the home of the University of
Wyoming where Pat Dye used to be head coach. Winds may gust as high as
60 mph with zero visibility and blowing and drifting snow. Still 2
inches of snow on the ground at Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains and
their low was 13. But the oldest temperature in the USA this morning
was 20 below zero at both Laramie, Wyominig and Anaktuvuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly ran away. I was on my
morning walk with her and the leash broke. She took off like a cannon
with me yelling for her to stop. I ran as fast as my little legs would
carry me for at least ½ miles. I was scared to death. She went all the
way to the north end of the walking track and then out onto a busy
street. I thought sure she was going to head to busy, busy US-11,
which would have put her in extreme danger. By this time, I was over
50 yards behind her and I saw her turn onto our street. She ran all
the way down the street. When she got close to her house, she
vanished. I was afraid she was going to crawl under a lower fence and
still get out on US-11. By then I had lost 5 pounds and was out of
breath. We stood in the street out front and whistled and called. She
came charging from between 2 houses. And raced across the cul-de-sac
at breakneck speed and almost jumped into my arms. That was a scary
time and we bought a new leash today. I wanted to spank the little
girl, but the majority owner intervened. Life goes on, scary at times.

...Cool Days; Cold Nights...

CHILLY AIR: The sky cleared nicely last night, and today will be a
much brighter day with ample sunshine. But, despite the sunny sky,
temperatures will remain well below average for early December; we are
forecasting a high today of 48 degrees, eleven degrees below today's
average high of 59. And, tonight, with a clear sky and light wind,
temperatures will drop quickly below freezing, and most places will be
in the mid 20s at daybreak tomorrow. The colder valleys will reach the
upper teens.
The rest of the weekend will stay cool and dry; we should reach the
low 50s tomorrow, but a fresh supply of chilly air drops in here
Sunday which will drop the high back into the upper 40s. Dry air means
a good supply of sunshine both tomorrow and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: We have good potential for a beneficial rain event for
Alabama Tuesday and Tuesday night; at this time we are projecting one
to two inches of rain statewide with a dynamic weather system sweeping
in from the west. While thunderstorms should be involved, it seems
like the air will be too stable for any significant severe weather
threat. Then, as the rain moves out, much colder air returns to the
state Wednesday and Thursday.

VOODOO COUNTRY: We often say here there is little skill in a specific
weather forecast beyond seven days; anything in that time frame is
called "voodoo country" simply because we just don't know what will
happen exactly. But, we have some skill at identifying trends ; and we
have indications that the flow of cold air might abate somewhat during
the December 15-25 time frame, with milder weather for Alabama and the
Deep South. This, of course, doesn't bode well for those of you
dreaming of a White Christmas. Time will tell.

THURSDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included .93" at
Morris, .90" at Reform, .86" at Coker, .84" at Moundville, .78" at
Bessemer, .63" at Gadsden, .38" at Columbiana, and .32" at Muscadine.
Birmingham's official rain total, based on data at the airport, was
0.73". Our deficiency for the year is now 0.69".

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for the rest of the state championship games
at Legion Field today and tomorrow; for the afternoon games,
temperatures will be in the 45 to 49 degree range at kickoff. Night
games will be played with temperatures generally in the 30s. For those
of you traveling to tomorrow's SEC Championship game, the sky will be
sunny in Atlanta tomorrow with a high around 50 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886 (this was actually before I started doing weather
on TV here!): Heavy snow fell on parts of the South and southern
Appalachians on the 4th through the 6th. Montgomery recorded their
greatest snow of record when 11 inches fell. An amazing 25 inches fell
in Rome GA and 33 inches fell in Asheville NC.

...Back To Dry Weather...

NEXT RAIN EVENT EARLY NEXT WEEK: And looking ahead, that rain event
early next week looks rather significant. So much so, that we may get
over 1 inch of rain. The timing on it now looks like Tuesday into
Wednesday. We will update the thinking on that as we go along. Back to
present weather, a cold front was pushing across the state this
afternoon causing a big contrast in temperature. At one point, it was
in the mid 30s over the extreme NW and around 70 down in the SE corner
of the state around Dothan. That slow-moving cold front brought
extensive rain to Alabama today and most communities received more
rain than we earlier expected. In fact, the

0.73 at Birmingham Airport reduced the deficiency for the year to only
0.55. These are a few rain totals so far today, mostly since before
daybreak:
0.67 Greystone Cove (North Shelby County)
0.50 Gadsden Airport
0.63 Tuscaloosa Airport
0.73 Birmingham Airport and Shelby County Airport
0.51 Anniston Airport
0.90 Reform
0.96 Millport in South Lamar County
0.86 Coker in West Tuscaloosa County

This afternoon, most of the rain had pushed over into the extreme
eastern part of the state. It will be clearing tonight and
temperatures will fall to freezing or lower over much of North and
Central Alabama. With almost total sunshine Friday, we expect highs to
be around 48 to 50. Mostly sunny dry weather can be expected until that
significant rain event arrives next Tuesday and Wednesday.

SECONDARY SEVERE WEATHER SEASON: This year it has been pretty much a
no-show. For several years in a row, we had more severe thunderstorms
and tornadoes in our autumn season than we did in the spring. Any time
we have temperatures well below normal that often eradicates any
threat of severe weather.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: 4 inches of snow was still on the ground on
Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountain National Park this morning. It was
mostly old snow. 21 was the low this morning in Gatlinburg. 8 below
zero was the low at Sparta, Wisconsin. 20 below zero was the coldest
at Arctic Village, Alaska—quite a warm up for them, because they have
been as cold as 47 below the last few days. 102 is the hottest
temperature since noon today around the world at Guiria, Venezuela. 46
below reported at several Russian stations. 25 is how many nights were
below freezing in December 1963. 75 nights had below freezing during
the year 1963, which is a record for Birmingham Airport.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I need to take a course in dog smarts,
because Little Miss Molly studies me closely and now has me captivated
under her paws. I can walk through the living area dying for a cup of
coffee and she will come roaring at me with a couple balls in her
mouth demanding that I play ball. She has all of her balls stored in a
single pile and she can sling them everywhere in a matter of seconds.
When she does that, she is running over with excitement and, of
course, I have no choice but to put down my coffee, let it get cold
and play several innings with her. It also gets me behind on my work,
but I do not care, just so that little 9-pounder is happy. Life goes on.

...Rain At Times Today; Turning Colder...

COLD FRONT PASSES THROUGH TODAY: Showers are likely across Alabama
today thanks to a passing cold front. With only limited moisture; many
Alabama communities will see only about a quarter-inch of rain. And,
the air will be rather stable so hardly any thunder is expected. The
most widespread rain will come this morning; the showers will taper
off this afternoon from west to east.

MORE COLD AIR: As the rain moves out, more cold air moves into the
state. With a clearing sky tonight, we expect a light freeze with
temperatures near 30 by daybreak tomorrow. The cool and dry weather
will continue through the weekend, with temperatures about 10 degrees
below average values for early December; highs will be in the low 50s,
with early morning lows mostly in the 26 to 32 degree range. The dry
air will mean a good supply of sunshine each day.

NEXT WEEK: A significant storm system is forecast to impact Alabama
next week; at this time it looks like the best chance of rain will
come Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, followed by a sharp change
to colder weather by Wednesday and Thursday. Early indications
suggest that this system could bring over one inch of rain to much of
Alabama.

SEVERE WEATHER A NO SHOW: So far, the fall severe weather season has
been as quiet as it gets. The cool, dry continental air that has been
over the Southeast U.S. in recent weeks has produced a very stable
situation, with little chance for thunder. We note, however, that
severe storms are possible deep into December, so we will continue to
watch for signs of a pattern shift that would bring warmer and more
unstable air up into Alabama. No indication of that anytime soon,
however.

BIG TIME CHILL: The coldest place in the U.S. yesterday morning was
Arctic Village, Alaska with a remarkable 47 degrees below zero. Don't
forget, the "official" arrival of winter, in terms of astronomy, is
still three weeks away. This year's winter solstice is at 6:04 a.m.
CST December 21. Coldest place in the continental U.S. was 3 above
zero at Grand Marais, Minnesota.

HURRICANE SEASON WRAP-UP: The 2008 hurricane season ended this past
weekend; a total of 16 named storms formed this season. The storms
included eight hurricanes, five of which were major hurricanes at
Category 3 strength or higher. Overall, the season is tied as the
fourth most active in terms of named storms (16) and major hurricanes
(five), and is tied as the fifth most active in terms of hurricanes
(eight) since 1944, which was the first year aircraft missions flew
into tropical storms and hurricanes. For the first time on record, six
consecutive tropical cyclones (Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna and
Ike) made landfall on the U.S. mainland. This is also the first
Atlantic season to have a major hurricane (Category 3) form in five
consecutive months (July: Bertha, August: Gustav, September: Ike,
October: Omar, November: Paloma).

...A Sparkle In The Air...

SHOWERS BY TOMORROW: Bright blue sky today, but I am sure you noticed
the very thin, wispy clouds way up in the sky much higher than the
crow flies. Those are called cirrus clouds. They are up at about
30,000 feet where the temperature is over 25 below zero and winds over
50 mph. I am sure you would not want to be up there today. Those type
clouds are also the first signal of a change in weather. Later, middle
clouds arrive and after that lower clouds. The clouds will increase
tonight, but we do not think we will see any showers until some point
between midnight and daybreak. A cold front will reach Central Alabama
around midday tomorrow. We will have a good chance of showers until
after the front passes. The temperature will trend colder again
tomorrow night, then dry weather from Saturday at least through next
Monday.

Not bitter cold this time behind the front, but look for some upper
20s by Saturday morning. It was cold across Alabama early this
morning. A few of the lows included: 22 at Scrougout, 23 at Reece City
and Rock Mills, 24 at Cedar Bluff and McCalla, and 25 at Mumford and
Vigo. The ridge tops were considerably warmer.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Bitter cold in parts of Alaska and NW Canada. It was
45 below zero at Arctic Village and 38 below at Old Crow in the Yukon
Territory. We see some
temperatures over in Northern Russia as cold as 55 below. It was 5
above this morning at Grand Marais, Minnesota. The National Weather
Service in Anchorage reports 22 inches of snow during November—about
twice the average amount. This November was the 9th snowiest on
record. Hottest temperature I could find in the whole wide world in
the last 24 hours was 104 at Tennant Creek, Australia. Remember, they
are in early summer.

A SCARY ALABAMA/AUBURN GAME: It was on this date in 1983 when a
tornado warning was issued while the game was still in progress at
Legion Field. The big storm waited until it got to Oxford to produce a
tornado. Two persons died.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Disturbing news story out of Central
Alabama where an animal shelter had to stop accepting pets because so
many people were giving up their pets because of the economy. It seems
that some are going to the extreme of abandoning their pets on back
roads in the middle of the night. It would kill me to do that. The
shelter had to euthanize a large number of dogs and cats because they
were overrun. Bridget Tytler sent me a heart-warming story about how a
6-year-old reacted after the family had to euthanize his 10-year-old
dog because of cancer. He was with the family when the vet put him
down. They were sitting around wondering why dogs cannot live as long
as humans. The 6-year-old handled it very well and he then explained
that when people are born they have to learn to love other people and
be good, while a little puppy already knows that at birth. For that
reason, dogs do not have to stay on earth as long. Great walk with
Little Miss Molly this morning. When it was time to turn around, she
plopped down in a big pile of sycamore leaves and resisted greatly
coming back home. She has a mind of her own. Life goes on.

...Some Rain Tomorrow Morning...

A MILDER AFTERNOON: Temperatures will climb into the low 60s across
much of Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine through
scattered clouds. To the northwest, a cold front will approach Alabama
late tonight, and will bring our next weather change. Clouds will
increase shortly after sunset, and a few showers could enter the
northwest part of the state around midnight. We will have a chance of
showers from around midnight tonight through midday tomorrow, but rain
amounts should be generally light due to the lack of moisture. Most
spots will see a quarter-inch or less, and all of the rain should be
into Georgia by mid-afternoon tomorrow.
In the wake of the front, another surge of cool air moves into the
state from the north. We will struggle to reach the low 50s tomorrow
with a cool northwest breeze, and temperatures will be below freezing
by daybreak Friday. Friday will be a sunny and cool day.

CALM WEEKEND WEATHER: At this point the weather looks cool and dry for
the weekend, with ample sunshine Saturday and Sunday, along with highs
in the mid 50s and morning lows at or just below freezing. We will
also promise no rain for Saturday's SEC Championship Game in Atlanta;
dry, no wind, and a temperature close to 70 degrees. The fact that the
game is being played in the Georgia Dome sure makes confidence in that
forecast very high.

BRUTALLY COLD: The coldest air so far this season has invaded Alaska;
Chandalar Lake and Arctic Village dropped to 43 degrees below zero
yesterday morning. The high at Fairbanks was 25 degrees below zero.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: The Iron Bowl at Legion Field in Birmingham
started in beautiful warm sunshine after a stormy night of very heavy
rains that caused severe flooding in the Birmingham area. 9.22 inches
of rain fell at the National Weather Service Forecast Office, which
was on Oxmoor Road at the time. During the second half, a line of
severe thunderstorms was approaching western Jefferson County and a
tornado warning was issued. The radar at Centreville showed a well
defined hook echo heading directly toward the stadium. Legion Field
Public Address announcer Simpson Pepper read the warning over the
loudspeakers but the game was not stopped. By ten minutes to go in the
game, the rain was coming down in torrents as Auburn tried to control
the ball and win the game in the horrible conditions as they clung to
a 23-20 lead. The rain began to fall so heavily that you could barely
see the field on the cameras. Fortunately, the storm did not produce a
tornado in western Birmingham, or the results would have been
catastrophic. But later, the same storm dropped an F3 tornado that
heavily damaged the Winn Dixie store at Oxford, killing two people. A
total of seven tornadoes touched down across the state that afternoon
and evening. Auburn went on to win the game 23-20.

...What A Difference A Day Makes...
NEXT RAIN THURSDAY: A nice turn around in Alabama weather overnight
and today. Yesterday there were snow flurries and snow showers in a
number of communities, including a few in the SW part of the state.
The snow was agreeable enough to whiten the ground in quite a few
places in North Alabama, with the most reported 3 inches in the
Mentone area on Lookout Mountain. That led to a minor problem this
morning when there were some patches of ice—the result of some frozen
snow melt. No major problem. Today, the air was sparkling clear. You
could see for miles. That is one great plus for winter in Alabama. We
do not have those long hot days with so much haze in the air that you
cannot see very far. In summer forecasting, you can almost flip a coin
to see who is going to get an afternoon thunderstorm.

OUR NEXT RAIN: The weather pattern is fairly active, so look for
another cold front to move rather quickly from the Plains into Alabama
arriving by the time you go to work Thursday morning. Preceding that
front will be a band of showers and possibly even a thunderstorm that
will reach Central Alabama after midnight tomorrow night and continue
through most of Thursday morning. This will be followed by several
days of total sunshine Friday through the weekend. We do not see any
bitter cold behind this next front. By Saturday morning, however, it
should be somewhere between 25 and 30 in the North Alabama valleys.

RAIN SCORECARD: We only have one more month to try to catch up on the
rain deficit that has affected most of the state through 2008. As of
today, here is a list of the rain deficits for various locations
around the state:

0.98 deficit at Birmingham Airport

4.22 at Anniston Airport

2.56 at Montgomery Airport

14.64 at Tuscaloosa Airport

15.73 at Huntsville Airport

Little hope that Huntsville and Tuscaloosa will have a chance to catch
up. Interesting to note that Mobile has received 64.73 inches of rain
this year, which is an excess of almost 3 inches.

GLOBAL ROAMING: I do not think you would like to be out in Cold Bay,
Alaska in the Aleutians today. Temperatures were well below freezing
and they were getting wind gusts to 54 mph. Coldest temperatures this
morning included 7 below at Embarrass in the North Woods of Minnesota,
36 below zero at Bettles, Alaska where there was 18 inches of snow on
the ground and 35 below in Eagle, Alaska. Back home in Birmingham, the
month of November averaged almost 4 degrees colder than normal.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly insisted on sleeping
tightly against my feet all night, which prevented me from turning
over during the night unless I woke her up and moved her. At 2:33
a.m., I had to get up briefly for a bathroom break and when I came
back she had captured my main sleeping area, including my warm pillow.
I had to pick her up and move her to the other side of the bed. Every
time I do that, there is a lengthy low-grade moan coming out of her
little lungs. It is her middle of the night mild protest to being
awakened. Last night she kept moaning for 30 seconds after I moved
her. She occasionally has dogmares in the middle of the night and she
lets out a little sharp yip every 10 seconds or so until the dream
goes away. I feel sure she is dreaming of chasing the CC (Community
Cat) or the CR (the Community Rabbit). That little dog sure does enjoy
life and she gets so much loving. Life goes on.

...A Slow Warming Trend...

DRY THROUGH TOMORROW: After a sub-freezing start, we expect a fairly
decent warm-up today, with most locations seeing a high close to 50
degrees. Certainly warmer that yesterday, but still well below the
average high of 59 for December 2. The warming trend continues to
tomorrow, as we push into the low 60s by afternoon. Dry air means
ample sunshine today and tomorrow.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Clouds return to Alabama tomorrow night ahead of an
advancing cold front, and we will mention a chance of showers with
that frontal passage. Looks like the best chance of rain will come
from about 12:00 midnight tomorrow night until 12:00 noon Thursday,
and rainfall should be on the light side due to limited moisture. Most
places will see a quarter-inch or less. The sky will clear late in the
day Thursday as yet another surge of cool and dry air pushes into
Alabama. Friday will be dry and cool with a sunny sky.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A weak disturbance will move over the state on
Saturday, but at this point it looks like the air will be too dry to
support any significant chance of rain. So, we will just mention a few
scattered clouds on Saturday with a high in the mid 50s. The weather
on Sunday remains cool and dry with a good supply of sunshine and cool
temperatures.

SNOW DAY: Snow showers produced some light accumulation across parts
of North Alabama yesterday, mainly on grassy areas across counties
like Marion, Winston, Cullman, Marshall, and DeKalb. The heaviest snow
in the state came atop Lookout Mountain in the lovely community of
Mentone, where three inches were measured by late morning. Some
schools in DeKalb County closed due to some icing across the higher
elevations of the county. We even had reports of light snow as far
south as
Washington County, between Mobile and Meridian, Mississippi. Flurries
in the Birmingham metro area were very light and spotty.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was
Farewell Lake, Alaska with 39 below zero. Coldest in the continental
U.S. was zero at Bottineau, North Dakota. Warmest place was Rialto,
California with 89 degrees. Up in Fairbanks, Alaska, the high
yesterday was only two degrees; their forecast high today is only 13
below zero.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: You've heard of the Rose Bowl. The Orange Bowl.
The Sugar Bowl. But the Hurricane Bowl? The University of Alabama had
been scheduled to play Texas A&M in College Station, Texas in
September, but Hurricane Gilbert caused the game to be postponed when
Crimson Tide coach Bill Curry refused to send his team to Texas. The
hurricane went into Mexico and ESPN cameras the next day at game time
showed brilliantly blue skies and fine weather at scheduled kickoff
time. When the game was replayed on December 1st, the Crimson Tide
destroyed the much-heralded Aggies 30-10.

...Pretty While It Lasted...

SOME GOT IT; OTHERS DID NOT: When we have a dry year, late on almost
any day you can hear people grumbling because they did not get a drop
of rain while their first cousin three or four miles away got a
drenching. Scattered showers, by their definition, disappoints some
and makes other folks jump up and down and cheer.
It is the very same way with snow showers. That is what we had today.
There was not a great amount of moisture, however, it was much colder
aloft making the atmosphere unstable not unlike on a summer afternoon.
Instead of rain showers, there were snow showers—most of them over the
north third of the state. Photographs showing some beautiful winter
scenes were posted on the ABC 33/40 Blog. Most of the precipitation
had tapered off by this afternoon, but there could still be a few
flurries into the evening hours. Clouds will persist most of tonight
and the temperature will drop a few degrees below freezing by daybreak.

SUNSHINE TOMORROW: A high-pressure area will be moving east along the
Gulf Coast Tuesday and Tuesday night. This will keep us dry and sunny
tomorrow. SW winds will set in Tuesday night and Wednesday. Our next
weather system will be a low-pressure area moving east across Oklahoma
Wednesday and pulling a warm front northeastward. Here in Alabama,
clouds will increase by Wednesday night and some showers should move
in from the west later Wednesday night and last into Thursday. Down
south, there could be some scattered thunderstorms with that system.
Weather systems are moving fairly quickly and another cold front will
be moving through our communities early Thursday ending the showers by
the afternoon and bringing us another freeze by early Friday morning.
See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details.

HOW MUCH SNOW? We do not have exact measurements from our morning
snow showers yet, but based on photographs, it looks like up on
Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County around Mentone and DeSoto State
Park, that there could have easily been 2 inches. There was also a
fairly solid snow cover in Franklin County of NW Alabama and yards and
housetops were white in the Cullman area. The snow began melting by
late morning.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Cold temperatures in the USA this morning included 3
above zero at Flag Island and Warroad, Minnesota and 22 below zero at
Stony River Lodge, Alaska. (That is a new one on me.) It was as warm
as 88 in Indio, California yesterday afternoon. There are still some
Winter Weather Advisories in East Tennessee and West North Carolina
mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sunday is always a very busy day in our
little corner, so for the second day in a row, I had to ignore a very
important little person. (Excuse me, I mean animal.) Little Miss Molly
never fails to let me know when I have shortcut her on playtime. I
made a special effort late last night to have a big ballgame with her
with the opening kick off at 10:30 p.m. She was happy as a lark and
ready to hit the sack as soon as we got through. Our busy life goes on
and on and on.

...Welcome To December...

Where has the year gone? Now we are in the twelfth month of 2008. By
the calendar, winter starts on December 21st, but meteorologically
speaking, it begins today. We enter our stretch of three coldest
months starting today. December is the second coldest month in
Birmingham, with a mean temperature of 45.2 degrees. We start off
with an average high of 60F today, and that is the last time we will
see that until late February. Today's average low of 38F will drop to
33F by the end of the month. The warmest it has ever been in any
December in the Magic City was 80F on December 7, 1951. The coldest it
has ever been is 1F twice, on December 13, 1962 and December 23,
1989. The average rainfall during the month is 4.41 inches. 13.98
inches fell in January 1961, the wettest ever. On average, a trace of
snow falls in December. Eight inches of snow fell in December 1963,
the most ever. Only January features less sunshine, with the 12th
month averaging 46% of possible sunshine, the 1st month 42%.

EARLY SEASON SNOW FLURRIES: A strong upper level low is moving
eastward slowly across the Midwest this morning. A very cold trough
extends down into the Deep South. The combination of moisture,
disturbances and very cold air aloft has been producing light snow
showers through the overnight hours. These same snow showers will be
with us much of the day until the low lifts on out. Temperatures will
climb into the lower 40s this morning, but not much further. Skies
should remain mostly cloudy, with clearing waiting until after
sunset. Readings tonight will drop well into the 20s across the area.

REMAINDER OF THE WEEK/INTO THE WEEKEND: Tuesday will feature a good
deal of sunshine. High pressure will be located over the northern
Gulf. The combination of this and strong low pressure over the Plains
will draw moisture northward to the west of Alabama. This tongue or
moisture will combine with a strong upper level disturbance on
Wednesday to fuel a band of rain that should arrive here late
Wednesday night. It will move out quickly on Thursday though, leading
to clearing skies. Expect sunny conditions Thursday and Friday, with
widespread freezing temperatures Friday and Saturday morning. Sunday
morning lows will be around freezing. Highs will be in the 50s.both
days. Two passing disturbances will ride by to the north on Saturday
night and Sunday evening, accompanied by just some clouds and maybe a
few sprinkles.

LONGER RANGE: The GFS outputs a trio of wet weather systems during
the week of the 8th. Hopefully, that will help to reverse our
rainfall deficits.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Three thousand fatalities occurred in one
small tornado in Florida. Thank goodness the deaths were of the
poultry kind, not humans as a small tornado cut a path six miles long
near Zephyrhills, Florida. Three mobile homes were destroyed and
seventeen damaged. Five brooder houses were also destroyed, resulting
in the dead chickens.

...A Little Touch Of Winter...

All that turkey is just about gone. The leftover dressing and
macaroni and cheese is history. The sweet potato and pecan pie is
history. We are down to the bottom of the Tupperware dish of sausage
balls. As J.B. recently said, "I never met a sausage ball I didn't
like." It has been a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope that
yours has been special, as well.

SNOWFLAKES? Boy, that's a powerful storm system that dominates the
eastern two thirds of the U.S. this afternoon. From its perch on the
Illinois/Indiana state line, it commands the weather over an area from
Montana to Maine and Minnesota to South Texas. Its circulation will
rotate moisture and disturbances across Alabama through Monday
evening, until the system finally lifts out to the northeast. Right
now, an area of drier air at about 10,000 feet is rotating across the
northern half of Alabama, effectively shutting over precipitation and
giving us a little sunshine. But at the same time, a vast reservoir
of colder air aloft is also flowing into the state. By late this
afternoon, the airmass will be cold enough for any precipitation that
falls to fall as a rain/snow mix and eventually all snow. Deeper
moisture is rotating east through Arkansas and Mississippi, and echoes
are showing up n radars to the west. These rain and snow showers will
head our way this evening and overnight. They will last into tomorrow
morning, and perhaps into the afternoon. Lows tonight will drop into
the upper 30s, and pretty much stay there on Monday, giving us a raw day

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: No problems are expected from the snow showers,
because surface temperatures are expected to stay above freezing until
late Monday night. Grassy surfaces might pick up a dusting however.

REST OF THE WEEK: Some changes on the morning GFS run. It shows
less of a transition to southerly winds on Tuesday, perhaps limiting
the moisture available to a developing storm system over the lower
Mississippi Valley. Rain is still expected to spread into Alabama
Wednesday night, and we still will hopefully see between one half and
one inch of rain. The GFS has become less bullish on a weekend system.

MIDWEST TRAVEL HEADACHES: This is one of the busiest travel days of
the year, marking the end of the Thanksgiving holiday. The big low
pressure system that is
rapidly deepening over Indiana will bring heavy snow and travel
difficulties to northern Illinois, southern Michigan and southeastern
Wisconsin.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: The month of November ended with an amazing
18.79 inches of rain at Honolulu International Airport in Hawaii,
which is the third wettest month in history there, and the wettest
November ever. The normal is just 3 inches. Airport data dates back
to 1946, but downtown data, which correlates well to the airport, goes
back to 1874. Only February 1904 with 23.50 inches and March 1951
with 20.79 inches were wetter. Amounts from other parts of Oahu were
near 30 inches, even in some of the normally drier locations around
the western half of the island.

...Snowflakes?...

Greetings from Seattle, Washington, where it is the middle of their
nine month rainy season. No, wait. I am in Alabama. It just feels
like the Pacific Northwest. Today will be another gray, misty day,
reminiscent of a Puget Sound day.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A whopper of a trough is our main weather feature on
this Sunday after Thanksgiving and Iron Bowl. It is moving east out
of the Arklatex this morning, but it will wrap up into a big bowling
ball of an upper low, and those features can be stubborn. The upper
flow over Alabama is still southwesterly this morning. Little ripples
in the flow are creating some patches of light rain. The persistent
frontal boundary over South Central Alabama is still there this
morning. As the trailing surface low moves along the front today, the
boundary will finally be shoved southward. A northwesterly surface
flow is allowing slightly cooler air to flow into Northwest Alabama,
but the real cold air flow will wait until the trough axis slides east
of us tonight. Temperatures will fall to around 40 overnight, and
they will stay there most of Monday, maybe even dropping a bit into
the 30s during the day. Monday will feel rather raw.

SNOWFLAKES? As the cold air filters in aloft, it will become cold
enough for the precipitation over North and Central Alabama to mix
with and change to snow late this afternoon and tonight. Some light
snow showers may continue into Monday. With surface temperatures
remaining above freezing, accumulations should not be a problem, but
it will be fun to watch. .

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday should dawn clear and cold, with lows
well below freezing across much of the area. Another strong storm
system will be taking shape over the Plains by early Tuesday, with
another strong upper trough and powerful surface low. Out winds will
shift around to southerly early on Tuesday, transporting moist and
relatively warm air northward into Alabama and the Deep South. It
will be breezy on Tuesday with temperatures moderating into the upper
50s. Clouds will increase on Wednesday with rain arriving Wednesday
evening. Some storms will occur west of Alabama, but there will be
limited instability by the time the system gets to us. But we could
see three quarters of an inch of rain. Much colder and drier air will
follow the front, with readings near freezing Thursday morning and the
middle 20s by Friday morning. Another wet weather system tries to
organize for the weekend.

SKY SHOW: Arguably, one of the most beautiful sky shows you will
ever see will be tonight. If there weren't any clouds, that is. For
a couple of weeks now, Venus and Jupiter have been providing a
brilliant sight in the southwestern sky just after sunset. The two
planets are moving closer and closer to a conjunction that will occur
tonight. And the pair is being joined by a slender crescent moon.
The trio will be about two degrees apart tonight, or less than the
width of your index finger extended at arms length. Venus is the
brighter one, but Jupiter is almost as breathtaking. Something this
special with the two brightest planets won't happen again until 2012.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Minneapolis ended November with 46.9 inches
of snow the most for any month ever in the Twin City. They had already
surpassed their normal season snowfall with 55.1 inches since October
1. Their average for the entire winter is 49.2 inches.
