...Perfect Weather Warning...

I et there is a little second guessing going on about this Perfect
Weather Warning for this afternoon. Things like, "You know it's hard
to get all the ingredients to come together early in the season like
this for truly perfect weather;" or "I hate when he issues a PWW, it
dooms the day to be less than perfect;" or "Did he see those showers
on the GFS over North Alabama?";or "Perfect Weather my eye, did you
see how cloudy it was this morning." We Weather Humans are a thick
skinned lot, and you have to take the bad with the good!

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE TODAY: A Perfect Weather Warning means that
ideal weather conditions have been indicated on weather observations
or actually sighted by spotters. The possibilities include abundant
warm sunshine, temperatures in the 70s and a nice southerly breeze.
When a PWW is issued, you need to take action immediately. Stop what
you're doing, immediately head outdoors, and enjoy. Wear comfortable
clothing. And call your friends and neighbors in case they may not
have heard the warning.

REST OF WEEKEND: On the weather maps, we see an atmospheric tug of
war going on between the big subtropical high to the southeast of us
and a powerful upper trough over the Rockies. In the middle is a
snaky stationary front, which is where the battleground is setting
up. That stalled front in the center of the country is setting the
stage for potential severe weather this afternoon and evening from
north-eastern Oklahoma through much of Missouri and into Illinois and
western Indiana. Low pressure is expected to form over Southeast
Colorado. It will move out toward the Plains tonight. Large hail
will be the biggest threat, but a tornado or two is possible along the
southern edge of the threat area. The front will edge a little
closer to Alabama as the low passes, and this will bring an elevation
in rain chances on Sunday, mainly over Northwest Alabama.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Our rain chances will go up just a tad on Monday and
Tuesday with that persistent front just to our northwest. An ejecting
upper disturbance will give the front enough impetus to move into
Alabama on Wednesday, where it will likely stall just to the south of
Birmingham. As it does, this will keep us in rain chances through
much of Thursday and Friday, and perhaps well into the weekend. There
is tremendous uncertainty and inconsistency in the model presentations
for the weather beyond Wednesday, so take the forecast with a grain of
salt.

RECORD BIN: Record highs on Friday included 67F at Flint, MI; 69F at
Beckley, WV; 82F at Joplin, MO; 87F at Childress, TX tied the record
The high of 65F at Lansing, MI ties the record for the date as did the
67F at Detroit.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: One of the worst ice storms in Iowa this
century left much of the state blanketed under a thick coating of
ice. As much as five inches of ice coated power lines in some areas.
The ice was heavy enough to bring down 78 foot high voltage
transmission line towers near Boone. 270,000 people without power.
Some rural areas were without electricity for a week. Damage was
estimated at $50 million.

...Welcome Davis Cup Fans...

IT'S NICE TO HAVE YOU IN BIRMINGHAM: The Magic City welcomes tennis
fans from around the country and world this weekend as the United
States team takes on Switzerland in the first round of the Davis Cup.
While the weather in Birmingham was nearly perfect outside the BJCC
Arena, the match in Benidorm, Spain between the Spanish team and
Serbia had to be called off Friday when 60 mph winds damaged the venue.

PERFECT WEATHER WARNING: Every year, I look forward to issuing the
first perfect weather warning of the year. A perfect weather warning
is issued when high temperatures are expected to be between 72-78 with
a good supply of sunshine. We should meet those parameters this
afternoon as a strong subtropical ridge to the east of Florida
continues to pump moisture northward into Alabama. After a cloudy
start, sunshine should grow through the morning hours until skies are
mostly cloudy. After daytime highs in the 70s, overnight lows tonight
will be in the middle 50s.

SPRING FORWARD: Don't forget to set your clock forward an hour
before heading to bed tonight as daylight saving time officially
begins. Sunday will start off cloudy again, with sunshine gradually
returning through the day. Highs will top out in the 70s again. A
disturbance will be moving through the Plains states and into the
Midwest during the day. A few showers may edge into Northwest
Alabama, but the subtropical high should protect us here in Central
Alabama from the associated frontal system.

A NEW WORK WEEK: The front will try to edge close on Monday,
bringing another round of showers and perhaps storms to mainly far
North Alabama. The
front will sag a little further south on Tuesday, keeping a chance of
showers in the forecast mainly north of I-59. Temperatures will
continue to be well above normal with highs in the 70s and lows in the
50s. The front will stall into North Alabama on Wednesday, allowing
some cooler air into the state. It will become the focus for a period
of wet weather that will last into Saturday or perhaps even Sunday as
a series of disturbances will spread rounds of showers and storms
across the state.

IN BIRMINGHAM THIS WEEKEND: The 28th annual Mulberry Canoe and Kayak
Festival will be held on the Mulberry Fork of the Warrior River this
weekend. It will be perfect weather for the races, food and games.
There is a fabulous exhibition of Leonardo DaVinci's Machines at the
McWane Science Center, as well as a great new IMAX film.

VOODOOLAND: Looking out long range on the GFS reveals there will be
a few more wet weather systems the weei of th 16th, which is spring
break for many here in Central Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: 6.5 inches of snow fell at Boston,
Massachusetts on this date to bring its seasonal to 96.4 inches -- the
city's snowiest winter in 105 years of record keeping. The old record
was 96.3 inches set in the 1993-94 winter season. Now all major cities
along this East Coast had broken their seasonal snowfall records in
the 1995-96 winter season.

...Showers Early In The Week...

A THERMOMETER ACTING LIKE SPRING: Well, the old backyard thermometer
is supposed to be acting like spring. That is why we are forecasting
daily high temperatures well into the 70s all the way through next
Tuesday. That means a warm weekend with lows at night in the 50s. As
warmer air moves into our region, there will be periods of cloudiness,
but also good breaks letting some lengthy periods of sun come through.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It is going to look like showers are imminent at time
at times because we will have intermittent cloudiness, but we believe
our first showers will be widely scattered ones late Sunday. There is
a better chance of some showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Monday.
They should decrease again on Tuesday. We think our best chance of all
during the coming week is next Wednesday and Thursday but more so on
Thursday.

NEXT DROP IN TEMPERATURE: A nice cool front should come sweeping
across the state early Wednesday. It will drop our high temperatures
into the 60s on Wednesday and near 60 on Thursday. Toward the end of
next week, we will have some lows in the low to mid 40s and probably
not getting out of the upper 50s next Friday. That is still much
better than the bitter cold we have experienced several times lately,
including our snow last Saturday night and Sunday. There is a chance
that the cooler air will get deep enough to where it will diminish our
chance of showers Wednesday and Thursday.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Along the Alabama/NW Florida coast, warm and
dry weather Saturday and Sunday with sunshine predominating during the
daytime. High temperatures will be in the mid 70s and lows at night 55
to 60.
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Another reminder that the changeover comes at
2:00 a.m. Sunday. Of course it simplifies the situation if you set
your clocks one hour ahead before you go to bed. You will gain one
hour of daylight in the afternoon and evening.

ELSEWHERE: Hot, dry winds are blowing across the Southern Plains and
the fire danger is high. Winds were gusting as high as 35 mph this
afternoon. Yesterday the hottest in the country was 94 at Pecos and
Vernon, Texas. Lows this morning included 2 below zero at Presque
Isle, Maine and 18 below at Arctic Village, Alaska. There is 62 inches
of snow on the ground at Nome, Alaska and 56 inches at Valdez. It can
get plenty cold on the big island of Hawaii. Mauna Key has an
elevation of nearly 14,000 feet, the highest point in Hawaii. It was
27 degrees there this morning with a wind chill of 17. Late in 1987,
would you believe that an F4 tornado moved across Yellowstone National
Park uprooting thousands of big trees. It moved right across the
Continental Divide.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since Little Miss Molly has regained
control of the living area, she is reasserting herself. Her little
doorbell has been lowered again where she can reach it with her paws.
She knocks the fool out of that bell when she wants to go potty. While
she has tried to stay out of the way lately because of the noise in
the den, she is now back to energy spurts where she plays ball by
herself and breaks all kinds of speed limits running through the
house. This morning I walked through to get a Buffalo Rock. By the
time I could turn around, she had raced around and gathered 6 balls
and piled them in the middle of the floor forcing me into a game. I
obeyed her orders. Life goes on.

...Warm Spring Days...

SHORTEST WEEKEND OF THE YEAR AHEAD: Yep, this is the weekend we go
back on Daylight Saving Time; it happens at 2:00 a.m. Sunday. That is
when the clock will advance one hour, an hour we won't get back until
early November when we go back on standard time. So, be sure and set
your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

SPRING FEVER BREAKING OUT: If you liked the weather yesterday, you
should like our forecast for today and the weekend. Temperatures will
soar into the
mid 70s today, about 10 degrees above average values for early March.
We expect a decent amount of sunshine through scattered high clouds. A
few fair weather cumulus clouds could even show up this afternoon, but
the low levels remain very dry and rain will not be in the forecast.
Afternoon highs will remain in the 70s over the weekend, tomorrow will
remain dry. We will introduce the chance of isolated showers on
Sunday; most of them will be over Northwest Alabama, and even there
the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in eight.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be on the unsettled side next week as
moist air returns to Alabama. A few scattered showers are possible
Monday, but the big rain event should hold off until Wednesday and
Thursday. A cold front is expected to stall out somewhere over North
Alabama Wednesday as the upper support weakens and passes well to the
north. It now looks like the rain could linger into the day Thursday.
Then, cooler air follows by Friday, but at this time it looks like the
really cold air will stay well to the north of here.

EXTREMES: Hottest places in the nation yesterday were in Texas; the
high at Pecos and Vernon was 94 degrees. In contrast, the coldest spot
in the nation was Arctic Village, Alaska with 28 below zero. Coldfest
in the continental U.S. was Whitefield, NH with -15.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Tornadoes in Alabama killed 7 people and injured
45. Just after 4:00 AM, a tornado touched down 9 miles west of Selma,
Alabama, and moved east-northeast on a path at least 10 miles long. A
trailer park was hit just north of Selma, killing four people. An hour
and fifteen minutes later, at 5:15AM, another tornado dipped out of
the early morning skies just east of Montgomery, destroying more
trailer homes and killing two people.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

...Chance of Showers Late in Weekend...

SPRINGLIKE WARMTH CONTINUES: That is not unusual because in reality
it is springtime. We do not see any change to cooler until the middle
of next week. There are indications that the next cold front will
reach Alabama next Wednesday, but even after the front passes it will
only be cooler instead of bone-chilling cold. Meanwhile, we are headed
toward some of the mildest temperatures so far this season. Starting
tomorrow and going all the way through next Tuesday, highs should be
in the 70s, mostly in the mid 70s, and lows at night in the 50s.
Remember, it was only 5 days ago most of the Alabama countryside was a
solid sheet of white due to our Saturday night and Sunday snow event.
We speculated back in autumn that we would not get through this winter
without measurable snow and it turned out to be true. It was not a
highly scientific forecast it was at least half speculation.
We do know that there are literally thousands of happy people in
Alabama because of that snow. From all of the comments we get, the
adults almost get as excited as the kids.

It is still not too late to get another snow before the season is
over. We are by no means hinting that. It is just a possibility.
There was a wide variation of low temperatures across Alabama last
night. This happens when a high-pressure system is trying to get out
of town to the east and a south or SW wind sets up during the night.
Over on the east side of the state, it dropped to 32 in Anniston, but
in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa the low was in the mid 40s. Most low
temperatures for the next 5 or 6 nights will be in the 50s.

This afternoon that high-pressure area that slid off into the Atlantic
east of North Carolina while pressure was falling in the Central
Plains. There was some cloudiness approaching Alabama from West
Tennessee and Mississippi. However, there were no showers in progress.

NOTES FAR AND WIDE: 60 inches of snow was on the ground this morning
at Nome, Alaska and 45 inches at Valdez. The coldest temperature in
Alaska was 31 below zero at Arctic Village. In good old Deadhorse, the
wind chill was 45 below. The coldest in the lower 48 was 15 below at
Whitefield, New Hampshire. Warmth is widespread across the Southern
Plains. An interesting place to be today is Wichita Falls in North
Texas where they will have 93 for a high and strong south winds. That
will dry your clothes on the clothesline in no time flat.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The two little babies are not here for a
short time so Little Miss Molly reclaimed her entire ball field
yesterday and last night and she totally relaxed. She did not have to
keep moving to stay out of the way of all the movement in our living
area. In fact, she spent a long time on the couch relaxing and in a
position to where she could see out the front door and also the back
windows. She and I took a half-mile walk this morning. We met the big
black dog with the crooked tail, that always points east, and he and
Molly had a nice rubbing of the noses and chasing each other for a
bit. It made her morning and it made me have to run fast to keep up
with the little girl. Life goes on—fast at times.

...Spring-Like Weather Ahead...

TRENDING WARMER: Birmingham's high yesterday was 60 degrees, and today
we should be 7 to 10 degrees warmer, with most communities seeing a
high in the upper 60s. Like recent days, we might have a few periods
of high clouds, but the sky should be generally sunny with dry air
remaining in the low levels. The warming trend continues tomorrow,
with an afternoon high in the mid 70s.

THE WEEKEND: Very nice weather continues on Saturday with a mostly
sunny sky and a high between 75 and 79 degrees. Some West Alabama
communities will flirt with the 80 degree mark on Saturday. The mild
weather continues on Sunday with a high in the 70s. A few isolated
showers could show up on radar Sunday afternoon, but the best chance
of them will be over Northwest Alabama, and even there most places
will stay dry.

NEXT WEEK: A moist airmass will cover Alabama during the first half of
the week. A few isolated showers are possible Monday and Tuesday, but
the best forcing for rain on those days will stay to the northwest. At
this time it looks like our best chance of showers and storms will
come at mid-week on Wednesday thanks to a strong upper trough
supporting a cold front. Looks like a few strong thunderstorms could
be involved based on the projected instability profile. Then, colder
air returns to Alabama by Thursday and Friday.

DID YOU KNOW? Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from
any other severe weather related hazard. The main reason is people
underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all
flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of
these, many are preventable. Most of the major flood events in Alabama
come during the spring months. March and April are our wettest months
of the year.

SPOTLIGHT: GAGE, OKLAHOMA: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Gage, Oklahoma with a high of 92. Ever been to Gage? As of the census
of 2000, there were 429 people, 197 households, and 121 families
residing in the Oklahoma community.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that

Alabama home and business needs one!

...The Season For Transition...

NO REAL COLD WEATHER: It is the season for change. We are marching
toward the time when we will no longer have to worry about freezing
temperatures. The average date of the last killing frost in Central
Alabama is March 23. The latest in history was April 23, 1986. This
does not mean that one of these years we might set a new record.

Took a pleasant drive this morning across my favorite highway in the
NE Birmingham metro area. It is called Deerfoot Parkway and it runs
from US11 in NE Trussville across ridges and valleys, including the
Cahaba River, to the community of Clay. Still saw just a few patches
of snow toward the western end of Deerfoot. We also cannot say for
sure that we will not get any more snow this season. Remember the
Blizzard of 93 was in March. The latest measurable snow on record for
Birmingham was April 3, 1987. We nicknamed it the Dogwood Snowstorm
because the dogwood trees and azaleas were in full blossom. It was an
eerie sight to see blossoms appear under a heavy blanket of snow. I
took lots of pictures.

We are also going headlong toward the beginning of Daylight Saving
Time. It starts Sunday morning. I know there are 25 zillion people in
Alabama that like that and I respect their opinion, but I am not one
of those.
It will also not be too long to where the daily weather forecast is as
dull as a worn out saw. It is a matter of deciding how many showers or
thunderstorms occur and where they will be. Summer temperatures are
awfully boring.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: We are headed for some very pleasant
temperatures. The old tired thermometer should top out in the upper
60s Thursday and well into the 70s all the way through the weekend. It
appears that another cold front will not try to sneak in on us until
early next week. That could set off a few showers late Sunday and a
better chance on Monday when there could also be some thunderstorms in
the mix.

NOTES FROM ELSEWHERE: A hot 93 at Pecos in West Texas yesterday was
the hottest in the country. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was
20 below zero at Houlton, Maine where there is plenty of deep snow
still on the ground. It was 38 below at Arctic Village, Alaska, but
the wind chill in North Alaska was around 44 below. The temperature
was 42 below at Alert in extreme North Canada—the northernmost weather
station and settlement in North America.
If clouds increase visibly and the clear sky becomes less, it is a
sign of rain. What a surprise. But that is a part of weather lore that
was published in England.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another totally worn out Little Miss
Molly last night as I took her to bed toward midnight and she passed
out 30 seconds later. She did not move until about 9:00 a.m. and then
only after some big yawns as big as the Grand Canyon. It takes a bunch
of stretching for her to meet the day, but it only takes a few seconds
for that little tail to start wagging. I am caught up on sleep after
the severe weather and snowstorm, but as James Spann says, who needs
sleep. Life goes on and sometimes it varies from exhaustion to well
rested.

...70s by Friday...

WARMING UP: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was 49 degrees, 14
degrees below the average high of 63. But, 5 degrees warmer than
Monday's high of 44. Temperatures will continue to warm up in the days
ahead; we expect a high today in the low 60s, followed by upper 60s
tomorrow, and mid 70s on Friday. High clouds will stream across the
sky from time to time, but the sky will remain generally sunny thanks
to very dry air in the low levels.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Saturday looks like a delightful early spring day in
Alabama; a partly sunny sky with a high in the mid 70s. Sunday,
moisture will increase a bit and a few showers could show up, but they
will be very isolated. Temperatures will remain mild with a high back
in the mid 70s Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: We will bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Monday thanks to a cold front expected to slip into extreme Northwest
Alabama. This front is expected to drift northward as a warm front, so
Tuesday could be a day with minimal showers. But, a stronger system
will roll in here by the middle of the week with more showers and
storms by Wednesday.

A LATE SNOW REPORT: I thought this was report was interesting; it is
from Jared Goggins of Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County,
concerning the snow event this past Sunday. He writes: "Just thought
you would be interested to know we had about 7+ inches of snow on top
of the mountain here at Oak Mountain State Park. The measurement was
taken at one of our staff houses near the Peavine Falls parking lot.
He measured 10 different places that he thought were not snow drifts.
His average was about 7.5 inches. We took the two lowest and two
highest out of our equation and came up with 7 inches. He had some
snow drifts around 12 inches. Wish you could of seen how pretty it was
up there. We will send some pictures to your picture page soon." By
the way, we received over 3,000 pictures from our viewers and readers
across the state. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to send them!

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Coldest place in the nation yesterday was
Arctic Village, Alaska with 40 degrees below zero. Coldest in the
lower 48 was Stonington, Michigan with 27 below. The warmest weather
was around the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas; hottest spot in the
nation was Pecos, TX with
93.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

WARM 70s BY THE WEEKEND: As I sit in my weather office by my big
window writing this story, my mind wanders away to the big overlook at
the end of the long plank walk at Cheaha or a similar one at DeSoto
State Park. I would also like to be driving up the Paint Rock Valley
or going deep into the Bankhead National Forest where there are
actually some hemlock trees. I guess you can gather from all of that,
that I do not want to be inside on a day like this. The air is
sparkling clear, although we have some high thin clouds. You can
seemingly see forever.

It was another cold morning across Alabama. I sure would like to know
how many mornings this winter that we have had temperatures under 20
degrees in the NE Alabama valleys. I bet it would surprise you. We
look at a few sample lows from this morning:

13 Grantley
14 Broomtown, Scrougout
18 Pinson, Meridianville
19 Cullman, Munford, Bankhead National Forest
20 Springville, Huntsville, Crossville, Decatur

Again this morning, it was below freezing practically to the Gulf of
Mexico. It will not be that cold tonight, but there will be some
pockets of lows to mid 20s in the East Alabama valleys. A more
noticeable warming trend starts tomorrow and becomes even more evident
as we head toward the weekend. By Friday and Saturday, mid 70s will be
common. We may hear of some upper 70s over West and South Alabama.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Little chance of any rain until a few showers show up
on Sunday. A better chance of showers on Monday along with some
thunderstorms thrown in, but even into early next week, highs should
stay in the 70s.

USA AND WORLD NOTES: I heard a news report that the total number of
people burned to death in Australian wildfires had exceeded 200--too
tragic to think about. That big NE snowstorm was not quite as bad as
earlier expected. New snow in New England seemed to vary from 8 to 14
inches and the sun is out today. In the Great Smoky Mountain National
Park, the low on Mt. LeConte this morning was 4 below with 5 inches of
snow on the ground. Gatlinburg had 12 with 1 inch of snow. At Mountain
City in the NE corner of Tennessee, the low was 2 above zero. Coldest
in the lower 48 was 27 below at Stonington, Michigan and in Alaska 38
below at Arctic Village. Nome has 56 inches of snow on the ground. 92
was the USA high at Indio, California. Just another indication that we
are entering a dangerous season here in the South. On March 3, 1966, a
powerful F5 tornado plowed through Jackson and cut a 75-mile path
through Mississippi. There were 57 fatalities.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Getting a lot of sympathy for my Little
Miss Molly because most of her playroom is not available any more. She
spends a lot of time walking from one corner of the house to the other
trying to stay out of the way. It is a complete change of lifestyle
for her. She frequently follows me around and looks up at me with the
most puzzled expression as if to say, what happened to our playtime
and our ballgames. The only thing we can do is try to give her a whole
lot more loving, a lot of rubdowns and a lot of belly rubs. She enjoys
those immensely. One of her favorite things now seems to be bedtime
where she can have peace and quiet. Life goes on.....

...Warmer Days Ahead...

A SLOW WARM-UP: The average high for March 3 in Birmingham is 63; are
will be at least ten degrees below that level today, but warmer than
yesterday when the high was only 44. Very dry air remains in place;
dewpoints will drop into the single digits today, so the sky will
feature maximum available sunshine. After another cold night tonight,
a more pronounced warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon as we rise
into the low 60s. That warm-up continues through the rest of the week,
with low 70s Thursday, and mid 70s on Friday. A few scattered clouds
will show up by Thursday and Friday, but we expect the weather to
remain dry.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: What a difference a week makes. This past weekend we
were playing in the snow; Saturday of this coming weekend will be
flirting with 80 degrees as the big thaw continues. Sunday will also
be very mild with a high well into the 70s. A few showers could show
up by Sunday near the Mississippi border, but the weekend at this time
looks generally rain-free.

MARCH PREVIEW: Welcome to March. March marks the start of both
meteorological and astronomical spring. It is definitely a time of
transition in Alabama. As the days lengthen and the sun moves higher
in the sky, average temperatures start to climb. The average high in
Birmingham at the start of the month is 62.

By month's end, the average daytime high is 70. The average low at the
start of the month is 39. By March 31st, the average is 45. The
warmest it has ever
been in March was 90 on March 21st, 1907, as Birmingham was in the
middle of an unusual heat wave. March is the wettest month of the year
in Birmingham.
On average, 6.10 inches of snow falls in the Magic City. The 15.80
inches that fell in march 1980 is the most ever recorded in the third
month of the year. It occurred during a month of flooding. It rains on
11.0 days on average, which ranks third behind July at 12.4 days and
January at 11.2 days.

BIG SNOW FOR THE EAST: A ferocious storm packing freezing rain, heavy
snow and furious wind gusts paralyzed most of the East Coast
yesterday, sending dozens of cars careening into ditches, grounding
hundreds of flights and closing school for millions of kids. The
devastating effects of the storm were seen up and down the coast. A
crash caused a 15-mile traffic jam in North Carolina, forcing police
and the Red Cross to go car-to-car to check on stranded drivers. The
storm was blamed for 350 crashes in New Jersey, and a Maryland
official counted about 50 cars in the ditch on one stretch of highway.
This is the same system that brought snow to Alabama Sunday.

...Our Bungee Thermometers...

TOPSY-TURVY WEATHER: Bless our thermometers. They have had a real
workout lately running up and down their scale. There is some good
news in the forecast today. We are going to have a milder trend
starting tomorrow afternoon that will become even better as the week
goes on. So much so from Thursday all the way into next week we will
have high temperatures in the 70s. That is about 10 degrees warmer
than the average for this time of year. We have listed 73 for the high
Friday, but Saturday will be unseasonably warm with a high of around
77. The chance of rain is very slim for the next several days. In
fact, some of the precipitation projections show it dry all across the
Southern USA through Friday. About the earliest we can expect any
showers, and maybe a few storms, would be early next week.

DO WE NEED RAIN? Not really at the moment, because we had some great
totals during that severe weather event leading up to the Sunday snow.
We had one report of over 9 inches at Samantha in North Tuscaloosa
County and numerous reports over 5 inches. This heavy rain caused the
2009 deficiency at Birmingham Airport to jump to a surplus of 1.66
inches as of today.

THE SEMI SNOWSTORM: It did not really qualify for a snowstorm,
although based on our standards we might call it that. We will try to
post a roundup of snow amounts from that storm on the BLOG later today
or tonight. Generally, most amounts across Central Alabama were around
2 inches. There were reports of over 5 inches in Hueytown and some of
the area in East/Central Alabama, like Sylacauga, had 3 to 5 inches.
It was a semi-historic event with all the local weather people doing
without sleep over 24 hours in a row. I suppose most of us are still
semi-groggy today. But all the kiddies are not groggy and that is what
counts. I was talking to a lady at my local bank this morning and she
said her youngsters simply demanded snow ice cream. She admitted that
she liked it too, because her mother made it for her and her
grandmother made it for her mother. Traditions are hard to break. I
stocked up on Buffalo Rock (diet version) and some Vienna sausage to
get me through the long hours. The Wall Street Journal reported in a
story in their front section this morning that 210 churches in Central
Alabama cancelled their Sunday morning services because of the snow.
There was a similar story in USA Today. I heard some folks on a
nationwide radio program this morning tossing a bit of fun at us
because we are in the middle of the Bible Belt. That is okay. We are
not thin-skinned.

AFTER THE STORM LEFT ALABAMA: A real booger of a storm as it advanced
up the east coast. However, the center was moving further off shore
this afternoon and the snow was ending in the Big Apple. A massive
shut down of Interstate 85 between Greenville, Spartanburg and
Charlotte. Literally hundreds of cars were stalled all night. Some
ran out of gas and could not get off to find a place to eat.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is going through some
confusing times. We had to put her little bathroom bell out of reach,
because
little Brandon (our great grandson) was treating it like a golf ball.
But Miss Molly is smart as a whip. She now goes to the back door,
looks straight up at the bell, which is at doorknob height, and turns
around and glares at us. It is all the signal she needs. Last night
she took the situation in her own hands (er, paws) and had a one
inning ballgame by herself that was the most vigorous I have seen. She
had very little room in the living area to play ball, so she would
grab one and run in circles of a few feet and bounce off the back of
the couch to go for more. Life goes on.

...Meteorological Spring Takes A Mulligan...

We weather humans count March 1 as the start of our spring season.
Sure, the calendars say it is the vernal equinox, around March 21st.
But March 1- May 31st more properly represents spring, especially in
the southern United States. We are going to allow Spring to take a
mulligan after an upper low caused the fresh season to shank one off
the tee yesterday. Spring promises to deliver more typical conditions
by the end of the week and the weekend. We are talking highs in the
70s! Upper 70s perhaps!

SNOWLESS STREAK FALLS: An amazing snowless streak came to an end at
Birmingham's official reporting station, the Shuttlesworth -
Birmingham International Airport, as two inches of snow fell on
Sunday. This put an end to a streak that had lasted over nine
years. It went into the record books as a 3,319 day streak. There
had not been measurable snow at the airport since January 28, 2000.
What made this streak remarkable was that it was 50% longer than the
other previous streak in city history.

PATCHY ICE THIS MORNING: Snowmelt, draining water and leftover slush
froze overnight even in areas where roads never became snowpacked or
improved as the afternoon sun warmed asphalt yesterday. Be prepared
for patchy black ice and frozen slush in spots during your morning
commute. Check for closings and road conditions before leaving. Take
it slow.

BIG EAST COAST STORM: New York City is bracing for possible blizzard
conditions and 8-12 inches of snow on Monday as the biggest East Coast
snowstorm of the year heads up the eastern seaboard today. Snow
will be ending around lunch in the D.C./Baltimore area, with storm
totals since last night around 8 inches. The City of Brotherly Love
is expecting 8-12 inches before it ends today. Boston is expecting
8-12 inches of sleet and snow.

COLD START TO THE WEEK: The circulation around the powerful low
pressure system roaring up the East Coast is pumping cold air into
Alabama from the north. Overnight lows plummeted into the teens and
lower 20s in many locations. Highs today will struggle to get out of
the 40s, despite near total sunshine. Lows tonight will look like a
repeat performance of last night, with teens and 20s again. Readings
will still be below average on Tuesday, with highs topping out in the
50s.

MODERATION BEGINS WEDNESDAY: Midweek will feature mostly sunny and
milder conditions. Highs on Wednesday will be in the 60s, with 70s
due back in here on Thursday as an upper ridge builds into the Deep
South and the subtropical ridge flexes its muscles off the east coast
of Florida. We could see upper 70s by Saturday! The subtropical
ridge will keep approaching weather systems at bay into the weekend.
There could a few showers Friday and Saturday, but they will be limited.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: The Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain areas of
North Alabama were struck by an ice storm which was the most severe in
memory for many local residents. There was heavy damage to trees and
power lines. Ice was still evident on March 6th in many communities
and as late as March 11th in higher elevation locations.

...Snow Day...

Snow in Alabama is a real treat. Especially when it happens on a
weekend. Thousands of Alabamians delighted in throwing open their
drapes this morning and seeing a dusting to 2 inches or more of snow
outside this morning. It was a perfect snow, with no power outages
and limited travel difficulties. This rare event was brought to us
courtesy of an upper low that is spinning its way across East Alabama
this afternoon. As it moves northeast, it will take the snow with it,
but not before dumping more snow on eastern sections of the area.
There was even some thundersnow over extreme East Alabama and western
Georgia.

TRAVEL PROBLEMS: If you have to be out and about this afternoon in
the areas that have received snow, take it easy. Snow has collected on
some roads, especially on bridges, and accidents have been reported in
many areas. If you don't have to be out, just stay home and enjoy
the picturesque scene. As temperatures drop well into the 20s
tonight, any leftover slush or water on roads will definitely freeze,
so be prepared to take your time if you will be driving Monday morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We dawn clear and cold on Monday, with those lows in
the lower and middle 20s. A few spots that have a decent snow cover
may well be in the teens. Monday promises to be sunny, but cold, with
highs struggling to get out of the 40s. Monday night will be very
frosty again, as cold air continues to flow into the state. Lows will
once again be well down into the 20s. Tuesday will still be on the
chilly side, with below average temperatures topping out in the lower
50s. Temperatures will begin to moderate by Wednesday, as a ridge of
high pressure in the upper atmosphere begins to build over Alabama and
a large surface ride sets up off the Florida coast. Look for 60s on
Wednesday, and then a run of 70s through the weekend. It should be
primarily dry through much of the week and weekend, although there is
a slight chance of a shower on Friday and Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: March roared in like a lion across South
Alabama and Georgia as 31 tornadoes caused 19 fatalities during the
afternoon and evening hours. There were a total of 13 strong to
violent (EF2 or greater) tornadoes and five killer tornadoes. The
event was well forecast, with a high risk outlook in place and good
advance PDS watches and warnings. Warning lead times on all tornadoes
averaged 16 minutes with an average 20 minute lead time on killer
tornadoes. A large negatively tilted trough and powerful upper wind
fields allowed for the development of the big tornadoes. In Coffee
County, Alabama, tornado warnings started before 11 a.m.. At 1:10
p.m. CST, an EF4 struck the city of Enterprise. School administrators
had students in designated shelters as part of their tornado plan.
Despite the preparations, a wall collapsed on a group of people,
killing eight students. The event prompted a debate as to whether
school should have let out early because of the pending threat.
Another EF4 tornado struck Miller's Ferry in Alabama killing one man.
In Georgia, an EF2 tornado destroyed a mobile home park near Newton,
killing 6. Two died in Americus, Georgia, when an EF3 tornado struck
during the evening.
