...A Warm Up In Store..

Another borderline winter event here in Alabama with temperatures
right on the edge in the I-20 corridor last night. Not so borderline
over parts of Northwest Alabama, where freezing rain and drizzle
overnight into the early morning hours caused some serious traffic
accidents. Three people were injured in a series of accidents on t he
Marion/Walker County line east of Winfield late last night. There was
a fatality this morning on US-72 seven miles west of Cherokee in
Colbert County. An accident around 7:30 a.m. on the Bear Creek Bridge
set the stage for another accident twenty minutes later that resulted
in a fatality.

WARM UP AHEAD: With all the clouds around, it is still
chilly across Central Alabama this afternoon. Readings will top out
in the middle 40s. Skies will clear tonight, but a little fog will
form. Lows overnight will drop into the upper 20s to near 30.
Tomorrow will feature abundant sunshine after any fog burns off, and
highs will rise into the middle to upper 50s. After another clear and
cool night Sunday night, Monday will be like a heat wave with highs in
the middle to upper 60s under lots of sunshine.

STRONG STORMS FOR TUESDAY: Skies will become cloudy
Monday night as a strong surface low gets ready to cross into Canada
from North Dakota. This powerful system will draw Gulf moisture
northward ahead of a cold front. A line of storms will form to our
northwest and enter the state during the day. Timing looks favourable
for strong storms (afternoon/evening). We may be in favorable
position in regards to a jet max swinging through and the upper trough
will be taking on a negative tilt. All signs that point to severe
weather. We will watch carefully.

SEVERE STORMS FOR FRIDAY: Wednesday will be sunny and
seasonably cool, but clouds will return Wednesday night along with
some showers as the front surges back north ahead of a developing low
to our west. This low will move northeastward across Mississippi on
Thursday, spreading rain and storms into Alabama. It will cross near
the Northwest corner of Alabama Thursday night. While the timing will
be less favourable for severe weather, that isn't poured in concrete.
The proximity of the low should yield high low level shear and the
upper level wind fields look very strong. This system could bring a
significant outbreak of severe weather to the Deep South. Later
forecasts will refine the threat. A brief shot of cold weather will
arrive for the start of the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1700: Swarm of 14 tornadoes across the
south affected parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas.
The most violent tornado was an F4 that occurred near Kosciusko MS,
but an F3 tornado in Fayette County Tennessee was the most deadly,
causing 3 fatalities. An F3 tornado struck Cullman Alabama during the
late afternoon hours. Thirty five people were injured along the
tornado's fifteen mile path. Tractor trailers were tossed like toys
at the Wal Mart distribution center. Two other tornado touchdowns
were reported in Alabama near Wilsonville in Shelby County and near
Brierfield in Bibb County.

...Some Icing This Morning...

For the second weekend in a row, we are experiencing a
winter weather threat across Alabama. An upper level disturbance
sliding eastward out of Louisiana brought clouds to the area most of
the day, keeping temperatures in the 30s in most areas, with lower 40s
in eastern sections. Back across Mississippi, thicker clouds and an
earlier onset of precipitation kept temperatures closer to freezing.
Problems with icing were widespread across Central Mississippi
generally from Clarksdale to West Point and Columbus. Numerous
automobile accidents were reported.

IN ALABAMA: A light mix of sleet, rain and snow
flurries spread across Central Alabama during the early evening.
Temperatures over Northwest Alabama were already close to freezing,
and freeing rain was reported across Lamar, Marion and Winston
Counties. The freezing rain area expanded as the freezing line
slipped south overnight and the precipitation spread northeast. Some
icing was being reported as far south as the I-20 corridor, especially
on bridges and exposed objects.

TODAY: Temperatures will gradually warm above freezing
this morning, ending any icing problems. It will of course take longer
the further north and west that you go. Skies will remain partly
cloudy, but precipitation should end quickly. Highs will be in the
lower to middle 40s. Skies should clear overnight, with readings
dropping to just below freezing.

WARMUP: Readings will warm into the upper 50s on
Sunday, with a few spots perhaps breaking 60. Monday will features
very comfortable readings in the 60s after morning lows in the lower
30s again.

TUESDAY SYSTEM: A strong low pressure system well to
our northwest will push a cold front towards Alabama. Showers and
thunderstorms will enter the state during the day, but
model predictions of rainfall amounts have been trending downward and
now average amounts are expecting to be around one quarter of an
inch. Temperatures will fall to near freezing by Wednesday morning,
but by afternoon, a stronger low pressure system will form to our
southwest. A warm front will move northward on Thursday morning,
accompanied by showers and a storm. Rain will be likely Thursday
night with a chance of storms, mainly over southern sections.
Rainfall will be heavier with this system, with one inch amounts
common. A little light rain will move out on Friday, but areas of
eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina may get a nice snow from
the departing system. Here, we will see clearing skies with freezing
readings over the northern parts of the area by Saturday morning. The
weekend should be seasonably nice.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: Alabama and the Deep South was in
the deep freeze. The official reading at the Birmingham City weather
office was 1 degree above zero. The airport reading, the official
location now, was –10 degrees. Skaters were actually able to skate on
the frozen surface of the Black Warrior River west of Birmingham AL,
where ice was six inches thick near the banks. An unheard of event!
The cold followed a 10 inch snowfall in Birmingham on January 23rd.

================================================

POSSIBLE TRAVEL PROBLEMS TONIGHT: This is going to be another one of
those nail-biting weather problems where a temperature change of plus
or minus a couple of degrees can make quite a difference in the
weather situation.
A lot of precipitation developed over Central and South Texas
yesterday and spread east. When it got into colder air in Mississippi,
problems developed. Several counties in Western Mississippi reported
that bridges and overpasses had completely iced over by noon.
Mississippi State in Starkville closed at 1:30 this afternoon.

Meanwhile, here in Alabama NWS offices in Huntsville and Birmingham
issued advisories about the wintry precipitation. Even though mid-
afternoon temperatures were in the mid to upper 30s along the I-20
corridor, they will drop this evening. Evaporative cooling will lower
them several more degrees.

WHAT WE EXPECT: A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect tonight until
about 8:00 in the morning for a good part of North/Central and Central
Alabama. The Advisory extends as far south as Livingston, Eutaw,
Greensboro and Centreville and on over to Sylacauga, Ashland and
Roanoke. A Wintry Mix is expected west of I-65 late this afternoon or
early tonight and then spreading eastward. There may be enough of
this precipitation to cause some travel problems, especially on
bridges, overpasses, trees and power lines. There is a chance that
freezing rain accumulation could be about 1/10 of an inch. It only
takes a small amount to cause problems. Some areas could get up to ½
inch of sleet accumulation.

Up across the extreme northern part of the state, the NWS in
Huntsville was forecasting ½ to 1 inch of snow and sleet. Some places
could get mostly snow, which could amount to 2 to 3 inches.

This is a developing situation. As always, we will be up all night
drinking coffee and posting updates on the 33/40 weather blog.

SATURDAY: The precipitation should end during the morning, maybe
before mid morning, but clouds will persist much of the day. It will
be an all-day chill reaching only 45 degrees. But take heart—milder
temperatures are expected on Sunday and we look for low to mid 60s
Monday and Tuesday. Our next good chance of rain will be on Tuesday
when we will have showers and possibly some thunderstorms.

AROUND THE WORLD: Wild fires in much of the West and even in the
Central Plains have really made the news the last 2 to 3 years. It is
estimated that an average of 10,000 forest fires in the USA each year
are caused by lightning. Bitter cold again in Alaska. It was 51 below
zero this morning at Chandalar Lake. Their flirt with milder
temperatures did not last very long. In Deadhorse, it was 39 below
with a wind chill of 66 below. How about a wind chill of 1 above atop
Mt. Cheaha near Anniston this morning when it was 17 degrees and 19
mph winds? An unusual even last evening at Point Mugu Airport in
Southern California when a tornado crossed the airport only ¼ mile
from the control tower. The funnel was backlit and nearly horizontal.
It unroofed a building. NWS thinks it was a waterspout that moved
ashore, and of course, when the they reach land they are immediately
classed as a tornado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My pitiful little 9-pound pal, Little
Miss Molly, has been following me around all day begging to play.
Because of my workload, I have had to totally ignore her. I am off
Saturday and she is going to get an overdose of playing time. Life
goes on....

...A Warmer Weekend Ahead...

A WARMING TREND AHEAD: Following a frigid start this morning,
temperatures will rebound nicely today; we expect a high in the upper
40s, representing a 30 degree warm-up for many Alabama communities.
The sky will be sunny this morning; a few high clouds will begin to
return this afternoon as another wave in the southern branch of the
jetstream approaches from the west.

The clouds will thicken tonight, and a little light precipitation is
possible after midnight. With very dry air in the low levels, some
evaporational cooling is likely, and I would not be shocked to hear
some reports of ice pellets (sleet) across the northern half of the
state early tomorrow morning. There also could be a little freezing
rain in spots (rain that falls when the surface temperature is 32
degrees or colder), but we expect the precipitation to be very light
and spotty, and travel problems are not expected. All of the
precipitation will be out of here by 9:00 tomorrow morning, and the
sky will begin to clear tomorrow afternoon. We are forecasting dry and
mild weather Sunday and Monday with a partly to mostly sunny sky and a
high in the low 60s.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: Looks like it happens Tuesday, with a strong
upper air wave passing just north of here and a surface front
approaching from the west. Periods of rain are likely Tuesday, and a
few thunderstorms are possible as well. At this point the chance of
severe weather looks minimal due to the lack of instability. We
project rain totals of around one-half inch on Tuesday, with isolated
amounts to one inch. Cooler and drier air will follow the rain on
Wednesday.

LONG RANGE: The active southern branch of the jet stream will bring a
number of rain events to Alabama in the February 2-10 time frame, with
occasional shots of cold air as well.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Cook,
Minnesota with 35 degrees below zero. The high at Chicago yesterday
was only 10 degrees. A winter storm warning was posted last night for
parts of North-Central Texas, including the Dallas/Fort Worth area,
where freezing rain was expected to make for hazardous travel early
this morning. The warmest place in the nation is South Florida; the
high at Miami and Fort Lauderdale yesterday was 82.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across
Alabama begins next week! Our first stop will at Oak Grove High School
on Thursday January 31; from there will have shows in Anniston,
Northport, Lineville, and Moody. One of our feature stories this year
is the 10th anniversary of the April 8, 1998 F5 tornado that killed 32
people in Jefferson County. We will also have a great story about some
of the heroes of the March 1, 2007 tornado that killed 8 students at
Enterprise High School down in Southeast Alabama. We hope to see you
along the way!

MILD WEATHER LATE IN THE WEEKEND: The old thermometer has been on a
roller coaster of sorts lately and that will continue over the next
several days. Arctic air was continuing to spread into the state this
afternoon and, by morning, temperatures will be close to 15 across the
north third of the state and 18 to 20 in places like Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham and Anniston. There is a chance for some light rain down
south late Friday night and Saturday, but we believe that most of
North Alabama, including the Birmingham area, will remain dry.

NICE WARM UP: Temperatures will snap back to near 50 Friday
afternoon, but by Sunday, Monday and Tuesday we expect highs to be in
the low to mid 60s. That will feel real good after our recent cold.
Our next good chance of rain will be next Tuesday.

WEATHER RADIO BOOSTER: A great story this morning in the sports
section of the The Birmingham News on page 5C written by Ian Thompson
regarding Mike Clemmer. He is a professional photographer and a friend
of mine based in Birmingham, but he specializes now in photographing
golf courses around the country. At one time, he was a staff
photographer for Southern Living and also did a lot of freelance work,
including National Geographic, Time, Newsweek and others. I am saying
all that to mention that he was one of our best advertisers for
Weather Radio broadcasts. On March 18, 1983, Mike wrote a letter to
Frank Makosky, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service
in Birmingham, explaining that he took his weather radio on all of his
assignments. He mentioned that KIH54 Birmingham had the best and most
useful information of any in the country that he heard.

FINALLY, SOME SUNLIGHT: It has been a long period of darkness for
Barrow on the north coast of Alaska. However, the sun will rise there
at just before 1:00 this afternoon, but it will set at 2:28 p.m. This
is another sign that spring plans to stick its foot in the door and I
am not ready. No spring-like weather this morning in Embarrass,
Minnesota where it was 39 below zero. It was 34 below at Tower and
Babbit, Minnesota and 32 below at International Falls, where they had
14 inches of snow. Warmest yesterday was 83 in Miami Beach.

DROUGHT STILL WITH US: Even though we have had some encouraging rain
amounts lately, which help the topsoil because the last rain was a
soaker, the long-term drought is still with us. In Alabama, 49% of the
land area is still classified as an Exceptional Drought. In
Huntsville, the 3-year period 2005-2007 was the driest three
consecutive years on record.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I guess it is another sign of the
changing season when the community cat was out strolling yesterday and
we saw the community rabbit hopping about like a rubber ball during
the height of the weekend snow. The landscape is so stark this time of
year and, in my photography eyes, it is beautiful. I must get out and
shoot my first digital pictures with my new digital camera that I got
for Christmas. I may even take one or two of my little 9-pound pal,
Little Miss Molly. Life goes on......

...Much Colder Air Arrives Today...

ARCTIC INVASION: North winds will increase Alabama today, ushering in
another shot of very cold, Arctic air. Despite a clearing sky and the
return of sunshine, temperatures won't go very far today. Most
communities will hover in the 30s all day, with wind chill index
values below freezing. Then, tonight, as the wind diminishes and the
sky remains clear, a hard freeze is likely for just about all of
Alabama. We expect lows in the 15 to 25 degree range, with the colder
readings across the colder valleys of North and Central Alabama.

CHANGEABLE WEATHER AHEAD: A warming trend begins Friday afternoon as
temperatures rise into the upper 40s. The warm-up continues over the
weekend, with low 50s likely by Saturday afternoon, and low 60s on
Sunday. We will mention the chance of a little scattered light rain
late tomorrow night into Saturday, but it is beginning to look like
most of this light rain will remain over the southern half of Alabama,
and even down there amounts won't be especially heavy.

We have dropped all mention of rain for Sunday and Monday; it now
looks like an upper air ridge will be parked over Alabama on these
days, meaning mild afternoons and a partly sunny sky. We figure
afternoon temperatures will rise up into the mid 60s, about ten
degrees above normal values for late January in Alabama.
We will highlight a good chance of rain and possible thunderstorms on
Tuesday of next week as another system approaches from the west.
Then, later in the week, another good rain event is taking shape for
Thursday and Friday (January 31-February 2).

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Big time cold air continues to cover much of
the northern U.S.; the coldest spot in the nation yesterday was
Embarrass, Minnesota with 38 degrees below zero. The high in Fargo,
North Dakota was 3 below. In contrast, South Florida remains nice and
warm; the high in Miami Beach was 83 degrees, and they were the
warmest place in the nation. Thunderstorms in Central Florida dropped
2.38" of rain on the city of Orlando.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: An F2 tornado tore through the eastern part of
Tuscaloosa, killing one person and inuring 10 more. The business
around the Five Points East intersection were heavily damaged, and in
some cases, destroyed.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across
Alabama begins next week! Our first stop will at Oak Grove High School
on Thursday January 31 (one week from today); from there will have
shows in Anniston, Northport, Lineville, and Moody. All shows begin at
7:00m and we recommend you get there early to get a good seat. We
hope to see you along the way!

MUCH COLDER, THEN MILDER: Our weather is going to be changeable over
the next few days, but looking down the road, how about a high in the
mid 60s by Sunday afternoon and staying mild next Monday and Tuesday.
Meanwhile, we will have to pay for that as another supply of arctic
air rolls into the state starting tomorrow.

The upper air flow today is not favourable for any rapid clearing, so
we may see some clouds stubbornly hang on through the night. In fact,
there is a slight chance of some light rain late tonight, but passing
mainly across South Alabama.

Thursday is not going to be very comfortable, because that old north
wind will be running between 12 and 25 mph and maybe some gusts of 30
or more. We are listing an average high for Central Alabama at 39. Our
coldest morning should be Friday with an average low of 19 along the
I-20 corridor, but mid teens across the north third of the state.

Originally, it looked like a good chance of rain Saturday, but we
believe now that most of that will be over the south half of the
state. Dry weather is expected on Sunday as we moderate into the mid
60s. Even though yesterday's rain was not heavy, it was very
beneficial because it fell slow enough to allow almost all of it to
soak in. amounts varied from only 1/10 of an inch in places to about ½
inch in other areas.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Lots of interesting stuff going on. Matt
Marshall, our contact in Layton, Utah, reports an additional 9 inches
of snow yesterday and now 18 inches on the ground. Up in the Wasatch
Mountains, there is 91 inches of snow at Alta. Yesterday morning the
official low at Salt Lake Airport was 2 below zero--the coldest they
had experienced in almost four years. This morning we found a low of
38 below at Embarrass, Minnesota and 35 below at Shirley Basin,
Wyoming. Strangest enough, the coldest we could find in Alaska was 11
below at Holt. Blizzard Warnings were in effect for St. Paul Island,
Alaska today with heavy snow, near zero visibility and whiteout
conditions as winds were gusting to 60 mph. That is the location where
they went about 38 years without a thunderstorm and, when the
lightning did appear, it scared the people half to death. Highest
temperature in the world in the last 24 hours was 108 at Telfer,
Australia. Strongest wind so far today was 70 mph at Adak Island,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Not a pleasant story today as I am the
bearer of bad news. Brigette Giovanni, a beautiful little Shih-tzu at
the far north end of the walking track had to be put down last Friday
because of walking pneumonia and a mass that had developed near her
heart or kidney. Brigette and Molly were good friends and, even as
late as this morning on our daily walk, Molly stopped behind
Brigette's house to see if she would come out. Brigette belonged to
Lisa. Lisa wanted to hold Brigette when the vet gave her the shot. It
did not work at first and Brigette had a seizure. It was a very
painful time for the family. Brigette and Molly had some great times
going round and round. Life goes on—sad at times......

...Clouds Hang Around...

CLOUDS HANG TOUGH: Clouds will linger today across Alabama thanks to a
persistent southwest flow aloft, and a little scattered light rain is
possible, especially over the southern half of the state. Temperatures
will remain cool with a high in the upper 40s this afternoon. As an
Arctic front passes through here tonight, a few periods of light rain
are possible, but the big story will be another Arctic blast for
Alabama and the Deep South. A strong north wind tomorrow with keep
wind chill values well below freezing throughout the day, and even
with maximum sunshine there is a good chance we won't reach 40
degrees. Then, tomorrow night, with a clear sky and diminishing wind,
we expect a hard freeze with most spots seeing a low between 15 and 23
degrees by daybreak Friday.

WEEKEND FORECAST: While Friday will remain dry, we will bring in the
chance of showers on Saturday as a warm front pushes northward. The
best chance of rain Saturday will be over the northern half of
Alabama. We also note a warming trend will begin Saturday as we reach
the low 50s. Then, on Sunday, the temperature should soar into the low
to mid 60s as the warm front moves north of Birmingham. A few showers
are possible on Sunday, but we don't expect a wash-out. The mild and
showery weather will linger into the first part of next week with a
chance of rain at times on Monday and Tuesday.

RAIN TOTALS FROM TUESDAY: Some of the heaviest rain yesterday fell in
a band from Vernon to Smith Lake to Gadsden; our Skywatcher in Hokes
Bluff reported .66", while Fayette picked up .53". Most communities,
however, had rain amounts of around a quarter of an inch or less.
There was some sleet and freezing rain during the morning hours atop
Lookout Mountain in Northeast Alabama from north of Gadsden up to near
Mentone.

RING AROUND THE MOON: Many of our readers reported a ring around the
moon Monday night, prior to the rain we had yesterday. That ring was
caused by a layer of cirrus clouds, at an altitude of approximately
25,000 feet, which are nothing more than ice crystals. Those crystals
refract, or bend light, and makes the circle appear. Since cirrus
clouds are often seen in advance of a storm system, you can deduct
that there should be a decent chance of rain (or snow!) in the next 36
to 48 hours.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest place in the U.S. yesterday morning
was Boulder, Wyoming with 36 degrees below zero. The official high for
Birmingham yesterday was 46 degrees, only nine degrees warmer than
Fairbanks, Alaska, which had a high of 37. South Florida was nice and
toasty; the high in Fort Myers was 84 degrees; that was the warmest
place in the nation. Another warm place was Honolulu, Hawaii with 81.

HARD FREEZE BY FRIDAY MORNING: It has not been the most pleasant of
days across Alabama. Certainly not one that the Chamber of Commerce
would brag about. It has been a chilly raw day with intermittent rain,
however, over the northern part of the state, there were some icing
situations. Those were gradually going away by early afternoon. In the
Skyline area of Jackson County (up on a high plateau), icing on the
roadways caused several accidents. Icing also occurred on DeKalb
County road 117 in the Mentone area. Icing was reported at a number of
locations across Lookout Mountain in the Ft. Payne area and walkways
became very slippery on Monte Sano Mountain on the edge of Huntsville.
Earlier in the day, there was some icing in extreme NW Alabama.
This has not been a big rain event. Almost all of the amounts were
under ¼ inch. In fact, 0.10 to 0.15 were more common.

The winds aloft do not favor a rapid clearing, so we may see some
stubborn clouds hanging on for part of Wednesday and there could be
some leftover light rain hanging around over about the south half of
Alabama, mostly south of Birmingham.

Finally, another surge of arctic air will clear out the air on
Thursday with brisk NW winds and highs in the upper 30s. By Friday
morning, we look for an average low of 20 across Central Alabama with
some teens in the colder valleys. Even that clear, cold weather will
be short lived because we are forecasting showers to return to the
area on Saturday. So, if you do not like the current weather, hang on
for a little while.

LOOKING BACK: At this time in 1985, we were beginning to recover from
one of our worst cold waves (yes, I still like that term even though
it is no longer used). It was 10 in Birmingham on the morning of
January 22, 1985, but look at these low temperatures on the previous
morning:

14 below zero Russellville, Valley Head and Belle Mina
13 below Bridgeport
11 below Huntsville and Muscle Shoals
10 below Jasper
9 below Haleyville
8 below Winfield, Pinson
7 below Auburn
6 below Birmingham, Gadsden, Centreville
Even down near the coast it was 3 above in Mobile.

THE WORLD AROUND US: 32 below zero was the coldest in the lower 48
this morning at Worland, Wyoming. Coldest in Alaska was only 8 below
at Northway. They have had a remarkable recovery from their recent
bitter cold.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Molly's little boyfriend, the little
Yorkie from up the street, just walked across our driveway and used
our mailbox post for his bathroom. Good thing Molly was curled up
sound asleep , because she would have exploded in excitement. We saw
the Community Rabbit yesterday, but no sighting today. A cat or rabbit
surges her blood pressure to the top. Life goes on and there are very
few dull moments. I like that.....

...Periods of Rain Today...

WET WEATHER RETURNS: Rain will move into Alabama this morning, and
there is a risk the precipitation could begin as a light mix of sleet
and freezing rain, mainly over the northeast corner of Alabama
(generally north of Gadsden). A little patchy bridge icing is possible
through Jackson, DeKalb, and Cherokee counties for a brief time this
morning, but as temperatures rise through the day we are looking at
mostly periods of rain with a high in the mid 40s. This won't be an
especially big rain event; most communities will see about one-quarter
of an inch. The rain will end from west to east this evening, and the
sky will clear after midnight as drier air returns. Tomorrow will be a
dry and cool day with a good supply of sunshine.

ANOTHER ARCTIC BLAST: A strong Arctic cold front will move through the
state in dry fashion Wednesday night, and will bring a sharp change to
colder weather on Thursday. Looks like we won't get out of the 30s on
Thursday with a strong north wind, keeping wind chill index values
below freezing most of the day. Then, Thursday night, with a clear sky
and diminishing wind, temperatures will drop quickly, and we should be
in the 17 to 22 degree range by daybreak Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A warming trend begins Friday afternoon as we rise to
near 50 degrees. Then, clouds will return Friday night, and we will
bring in a chance of rain on Saturday with a warm front pushing
northward. Temperatures early in the day Saturday night support a
brief period of sleet or freezing rain, but at this point it looks
like a mostly rain event Saturday. We will continue to mention a
chance of rain on Sunday and Monday, especially for areas north of
Birmingham, as the surface boundary stalls out nearby. We should point
out that we have a good chance of reaching the 60s by Sunday and
Monday, and there might even be a few thunderstorms involved as the
air becomes more unstable.

SATURDAY'S SNOW: As expected, the heaviest snow in Alabama this past
Saturday was over the central part of the state. Seems like the county
with the most snow was Dallas; the community of Orrville, which is
about 15 miles southwest of Selma down Alabama Highway 22, reported a
5.5 inches of snow on the ground. Sweetwater, in the far southern part
of Marengo County, measured 4 inches, while 3 inch totals were common
through parts of Chilton and Sumter counties. Snow was still on the
ground atop Mount Cheaha, Alabama's highest mountain, last night.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: While much of the continental U.S. is
shivering in very cold air, Alaska is relatively warm for mid to late
January; Cordova and Kim Salmon reported a high of 44 yesterday.
Coldest spot in the lower 48 yesterday was Butte, Montana with 33
degrees below zero. Caribou, Maine dropped to 24 below. Here in
Alabama, yesterday's low in Hamilton was 9 degrees.

RAIN FOR TOMORROW: First, a note about snow. I have been in weather
work for what seems like 300 years. I learned very early that you need
a thick skin for this business. I measured my skin this morning and it
is 3 inches thick. That is why I do not wear a coat. People get more
upset over snow or lack thereof than they do taxes or football. I
understand the frustrations and I definitely do not take it personally.

The strong high-pressure area that brought us two nights of very cold
weather was sliding off the North Carolina coast this afternoon.
Weather systems are moving fairly quickly. Off to our west, a new low-
pressure area was forming over Kansas this afternoon and satellite
photographs showed a good thick layer of clouds already as far east as
Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Those clouds will move into Alabama
overnight and it will not be as cold. We are looking for an average
low of 34, but it could be as cold as 29 or 30 in some of the East
Alabama valleys. Some rain will reach the area tomorrow morning and
there could be a brief period of sleet over the far eastern areas.
Most of the rain tomorrow will be during the afternoon and evening.
This is not a major rain event and amounts may be more like 1/3 of an
inch. Clearing weather is expected on Wednesday and more cold air will
visit us by the end of the week. Our coldest morning should be Friday
with lower 20s. Another rain event by the weekend. That shows how fast
things are moving.

Temperatures across Alabama were below freezing for more than 40
consecutive hours this weekend. A sample of lows this morning:

9 at Hamilton (NWS coop observer)
11 Cottondale, Muscadine
13 Reese City, Haleyville, McCalla
14 Pinson, Black Creek, Coker
19 in Birmingham, Anniston, Tuscaloosa

THE WORLD AROUND US: You think it was cold this morning? On this date
in 1985, the temperature plunged to 14 below zero at Belle Mina,
Russellville and Valley Head in North Alabama. It was 13 below at
Bridgeport, 11 below at Huntsville, 10 below at Jasper and 6 below at
Birmingham, Gadsden and Centreville. We do not have to mention the
damage that weather like that can cause. Would you believe that the
low of 12 below zero on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains this
morning was equal to the low in Alaska at Northway. 7 inches of snow
on the ground at Mt. LeConte and 5 inches on Newfound Gap. The 36 high
in Barrow, Alaska yesterday was 2 degrees warmer than Birmingham. Some
cold temperatures in the lower 48 this morning included 32 below at
Butte, Montana and Embarrass, Minnesota and 28 below at Ladysmith,
Wisconsin.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was anxious to see Little Miss Molly's
reaction to snow. The only other time she saw any was some tiny flakes
when she was real small. She leapt in the air snapping at them. This
time I took her for a 1/2 –mile walk in the heaviest of the snow and
she totally ignored it. The Community Rabbit came racing out of the
underbrush and took off like a bullet. Glad Molly did not see him or
Molly would have been jerked off my feet. I had the rare opportunity
to watch two football games last night. I have decided I would rather
be a weatherman and a dog walker more so than a star in the NFL and
have to play in the conditions that I saw last night. Life goes on
despite football and snow.
