...Wetter Weather Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! A line of showers and storms marched across Mississippi last
evening, dying out before it reached the Alabama border. The showers and
storms were produced by a trough of low pressure to the west of us, but
Alabama continues under the protective power of a ridge of high pressure to
our east. The ridge will begin to breakdown today, but not before we have
another day of limited showers and storm activity.

TODAY: It looks like chances of showers and storms will be limited today
across the area. Temperatures should rise to near 90 degrees in most
locations under partly cloudy skies.

TONIGHT: Showers and storms should work eastward toward Alabama again
tonight, and unlike last night, they just might make it. So we will leave a
chance of showers and storms over western sections overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The trough will be slowly moving across Alabama Monday.
This will mean an increased chance of showers and storms. The progression
will continue on Tuesday, and more showers and storms will form at just
about any point, but they will be most likely during the afternoon and
evening hours.
Indications are that the trough will be with us on through Wednesday and
Thursday, and perhaps on into Friday. This means an elevated chance of
showers and storms will be with us through most of the coming week. That is
not bad news, given that we have been a little short in the rainfall
department the past few weeks.

TROPICS: A fairly distinct tropical wave is northeast of the Leeward
Islands this morning, but upper winds do not favor development.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: After spending 14 days meandering across the
southern United States, Allison, the costliest tropical storm in United
States history finally moved off the East Coast. Allison dumped flooding
rain along her entire path from the devastated Houston area where she made
landfall on the 5th of June, across the Southeast, Mid Atlantic and finally
into Massachusetts. 35 fatalities would be attributed to Allison, along
with more than $2.5 billion in damage.

...A Few More Storms...

GOOD MORNING: Numerous storms developed to our south and southwest on
Friday afternoon, in closer proximity to an upper level trough to the west
of Alabama. The blow off from those storms produced a cirrus canopy over
the state during the afternoon. Those storms will form again today to our
west. Some of them may edge into West Alabama, so we will include a chance
of storms this afternoon. Increased clouds may keep temperatures a couple
of degrees cooler than yesterday. Readings should range from the upper 80s
where there are most clouds to lower 90s in eastern sections.
REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Can't rule out the chance of an overnight shower or
storm, especially over western sections. Look for more storms to our west
on Sunday, with a chance again for western Alabama. High pressure over the
Atlantic that has been protecting us will break down late tomorrow and may
allow more showers to edge into Alabama late tomorrow night and Monday.
RAINFALL SURPLUS DWINDLING: We have been running with a rainfall surplus
for most of this year, but that excess is withering away along with most of
our grass. We are now 3.29 inches above normal for the year.
SKYLIGHTS: Looking west tonight after sunset, the planets Mars and Saturn
will appear to be on a collision course. They won't be in actuality, but
it will make a pretty sight.
TROPICS: The Atlantic Basin is quiet again after this week's Tropical Storm
Alberto. No tropical storm formation is expected any time soon.
IMPORTANT LESSON: All tornadoes, no matter how small or insignificant they
may seem, can be deadly. The deadliest tornado in the United States in 1978
was also one of the weakest. Learn more about it in today's Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: A prison in Wisconsin was hit by a tornado. Several
buildings were destroyed, but much to the prisoners' dismay, the fences
survived.

IN SEARCH OF RAIN: Do not get your hopes up too much, but at least we
do have enough evidence to mention rain in the forecast for the next 5
days at least. The way the weather pattern is developing, people over
in West Alabama will have a better chance than the people in the east.
The closer you get to the Mississippi border, the better the chance.

This afternoon the sea breeze front was noticeable in extreme South
Alabama as some scattered thunderstorms were moving inland. An old
frontal boundary that had sat down to rest in the extreme south, was
also trying to work its way northward. All of this means that moist
air will be moving back northward, but all the other ingredients
including the upper air profile, will favor the best chance of showers
over the western part of the state. See our day-by-day forecast for
specifics. High temperatures will back off a few degrees over the next
several days hanging out around 88 to 90. That is a lot better than
the mid 90s.

AT THE BEACH: Generally good weather this weekend and early next
week. Only a small chance of a shower or a thunderstorm each day with
more sun than clouds. They will have a slightly better chance of
showers and storms tomorrow. Highs consistently in the upper 80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a weak tropical wave over the Western
Caribbean moving steadily westward. An upper level low may be trying
to form in the same area. However, there is not expected to be any
tropical formation over the next few days. Interesting to note that on
this date in 1972, Tropical Storm Agnes was born in that same general
area and become a hurricane.

WAR ZONE WEATHER: In Basrah, Iraq, highs will be between 116 and 120
over the next 5 days with clear weather. Lows around 91. Baghdad will
have 110-116 each day. In Afghanistan, the highs in Kabul will be in
the mid 80s.

ROAMING: 87 in Denver yesterday sure was welcome after a record 102
on Wednesday...112 in Wink, Texas was the USA hottest...30 this
morning in Stanley, Idaho where you can look off to the south and see
the jagged peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains...it was 28 this morning in
Wainwright, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal and I had one of the most
rambunctious ballgames ever last night and when we finished, we both
felt like we had completed a marathon. Both tongues were hanging out.
I sat down on the couch to read the paper. Out of the corner of my eye
I saw a little black object airborne and coming right at me. It was
Little Miss Molly. She had grabbed one of her balls and plopped down
right in my lap. She started shaking the ball vigorously right in my
face. If that is not a distinct request, I do not know what is. On our
morning walks, we are trying to go early each day due to the heat.
This morning we were serenaded by a mockingbird sitting on the highest
point of Molly's house. We did not see another dog or human. Have not
heard our new friend that barks in a long monotone and ending in a
sudden high note in a long time. We miss him. We also miss the
community rabbits and community cats. They must be in hiding because
of the heat. And we never get enough of the old crows. They must be on
vacation some place. Hope the crows and October hurry back. Life goes
on.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of some pleasantly cool
mornings lately, but those will gradually disappear. It is also a
story of hot afternoons with most areas getting into the low and mid
90s again today and Friday, then dropping back a few degrees over the
weekend.

Almost everybody in the state wants rain. Latest computer models seem
to back off on the extent of showers and thunderstorms this weekend.
Most of what occurs will be over the west part of the state. For
example, Russellville, Tuscaloosa, Demopolis and Livingston will have
a better chance than Birmingham eastward. Even in those areas, it does
not look like a widespread rain event.

I suppose we ought to celebrate some low temperatures from this
morning. It will not be long until 50s will be out of the question.
These are the places that enjoyed the 50s this morning:

53 in Crossville
54 in Black Creek and DeSoto State Park
55 in Cullman and Ft. Payne
56 in Hamilton
58 in Pinson
59 in Jasper and Talladega

WHERE, OH, WHERE IS ALBERTO: He is speeding across the North
Atlantic and at midday was a few hundred miles south of the west part
of Nova Scotia. Of course, he has long ago been demoted from a
tropical storm or depression. Elsewhere in the tropics, a tropical
wave 1,000 miles east of the Southern Windward Islands has weakened.
Alberto probably brought billion dollar rains to parts of Florida,
Georgia and the Carolinas. Up to 8 inches fell in Central North
Carolina. Unfortunately, there was a tragedy. At Loisburg in Franklin
County, they got 5.17 inches. However, flash flooding swept a 12-year
old boy into a creek and downstream he was caught in a storm drain and
lost his life. 7 inches of rain fell at North Carolina State
University and at Holly Springs with Raleigh receiving 6.29 inches.
Meanwhile, across the country major forest fires south of Flagstaff,
Arizona with about 6,000 acres up in flames.

BIG TIME HEAT EAST OF ROCKIES: A historic event yesterday in Denver
where weather records go back all the way to 1872. In those 134 years,
Denver had never seen the 100-degree mark this early. Yesterday they
had 102. It marks only the 7th time in history to be that hot in June.
It was 107 in Lamar, Colorado. The low in Colorado this morning was 37
at Craig.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is always nice to get e-mails from
people who say how much they enjoy the adventures of Little Miss
Molly. It was especially appreciative to get an e-mail from a
Birmingham area soldier now serving in Iraq. He mentioned how all the
information we post on the ABC 33/40 web site, the BLOG, and the
e-forecast meant so much to them. They also said they really enjoy the
Little Miss Molly stories and it was like a touch of home. As we
started our first walk this morning, the grass cutters were out front.
Miss Molly just had to see them and when I took her out the back door
for her walk, she almost jerked me down to go out front. About that
time the big lawnmower cranked. It sounded like a Sherman tank. Molly
ran back through my legs and headed for the hills. It is the nearest
thing to a whiplash that I have had for a long time. The rest of the
walk was full of energy, but enjoyable. Life goes on.

...Alabama Weather Heating Up...

Hot and dry weather will continue to be the Alabama weather story today and
tomorrow. Lots of sun; highs in the low 90s for most spots. But, the chance
of a few afternoon showers and storms over the weekend is looking a tad more
promising this morning.

A major upper trough is now over the northwest U.S., and is forecast to move
down into the southern plains. And, at the surface, winds will veer around
to the south by Saturday, meaning an increase in low level moisture. This
should mean a fairly decent chance of scattered showers and storms both
Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The rain probably won't be all that widespread, but at least a few front
yards and lakes have a good chance at a good shower or storm. Highs for the
weekend will be in the 88 to 92 degree range. A few scattered afternoon
storms will be possible early next week as well.

TROPICAL TIDBITS: The storm formerly known as Alberto is moving northeast
into the Atlantic, away from the U.S. mainland this morning. The system
might
approach Scotland by early next week after a long journey across the "big
pond". Elsewhere, one wave is over the Caribbean, and another one in the
eastern Atlantic, but development is not expected at this time due to
hostile upper air winds.

ROAMING: Raleigh, North Carolina was soaked with 5.65" of rain yesterday
thanks to our friend Alberto. The total at Norfolk, VA was 4.05" Hottest
place in the nation yesterday was Wink, TX with 111 degrees. Triple digit
heat reached Nebraska, where North Platte reported a high of 100. Alabama's
hot spot yesterday with Dothan with 95. The mercury reached 92 in
Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery.

...Warmer Days Ahead...

Sure was nice to have a break in the heat yesterday. Birmingham's high was
only 81 degrees, six degrees below normal, and our lowest maximum
temperature since May 17. At our SKYCAM site at the restaurant atop Mt.
Cheaha (south of Anniston), the high was only 75 (the elevation at that site
is over 2,000 feet).

ON THE MAPS: The circulation of tropical storm Alberto (probably a tropical
depression by the time you read this) will roll across the coastal region of
the Carolinas today on the journey northeast; it should emerge over the
Atlantic this evening. A northerly flow on the west side of Alberto's
circulation will continue to push drier air into Alabama today, meaning lots
of sunshine statewide. We expect most places to see a high somewhere between
87 and 90.

STILL DRY: The pattern continues to look dry for Alabama for at least the
next seven days, and possibly through the rest of June. An upper air ridge
is forecast to sit over the state, keeping the chance of afternoon showers
very small. That will also mean warmer days ahead; we should be in the low
90s tomorrow and Friday, with some mid 90s not out of the question by the
weekend, especially over West Alabama.

A few afternoon showers or storms might show up by Sunday or the first part
of next week, but they will probably be few and between.

ROAMING: Tropical Storm Alberto was responsible for these rain totals
yesterday: 3.20" in Tallahassee, 3.14" at Savannah, 2.70" in Jacksonville;
and 1.00" at Daytona Beach. This beneficial rain was generally very welcomed
in an area that has been dry for a long time. National hot spot was Gila
Bend, Arizona with 113; Phoenix reached 111 degrees.

...The Heat Backs Off A Bit...

While many Alabama lawns remain parched and dry, some neighborhoods got a
good soaking in the scattered storms that formed yesterday afternoon. Some
rain totals included 2.05" at Helena, 1.59" at Inverness, 1.56" at
Trussville, 1.30" at Sterrett, 1.19" at Riverchase, and 1.03" at Greystone
Farms in northern Shelby County. There was even some temporary flooding in
parts of the Birmingham metro area.

MORE RAIN? With a tropical storm in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, you might
think more rain is ahead for the state. But, unfortunately the rain shield
from Alberto will stay well to the south and east of us, and as drier air
works into the state from the north, we don't expect any additional showers
today. In fact, the chance of rain here for the next five to seven days
looks very small due to warm air aloft.

ALBERTO UPDATE: The broad circulation center of tropical storm Alberto will
move across North Florida today; the main rain mass will remain east of
Panama City; the heaviest rain will fall in places like Jacksonville,
Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach. Flash flood watches remain in effect, but
the rain in Florida will be beneficial and generally welcome news. Alberto
will move into the Atlantic tonight, and continue to move northeast, just
off the eastern U.S. coast.

Peak winds with Alberto are near 70 mph, but the system is elongated and not
very healthy due to shearing and dry air becoming entrained into the
circulation. Weakening is likely today as the system moves over land.

HOW DRY? Counting the 0.15" that fell yesterday at the Birmingham Airport,
we have had measurable rain on only four of the last 26 days in the
Birmingham metro area.

...A Storm Possible...

GOOD MORNING: We are watching a weak cold front moving slowly south through
Alabama today. The front set off scattered thunderstorms last night over
Tennessee that moved down into North Alabama. A chance of storms will
continue until the front passes later this afternoon. It is not out of the
question that we could see a strong storm or two. Clouds and precipitation
will hold readings below 90 today.

TONIGHT AND TUESDAY: Not much change behind the front. With a northerly
surface wind and some cloudiness on Tuesday, high temperatures will hold in
the upper 80s.

ALBERTO: Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Alberto will be holding onto its status
as a tropical cyclone tenuously. It is located about 300 miles west of Fort
Myers in the South Central Gulf this morning. It is very disorganized, and
will continue to experience significant wind shear for a little bit longer.

Then the shear may relax somewhat and slight strengthening may occur later
today before the system makes landfall north of Tampa Tuesday morning. Top
winds should be less than 60 mph at landfall. The storm will make the
crossing of the Peninsula and emerge into the Atlantic where it will lose
its tropical characteristics rather quickly.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Dry and sunny conditions will prevail through Thursday.
The northerly flow can be unpredictable however, and don't be surprised to
see a storm complex slide by at some point. By Friday, a southerly surface
flow will be re-established, setting the stage for a return to the typical
summertime patter of scattered afternoon and evening storms as we head into
the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Famed tornado researcher Theodore "Ted" Fujita had
been studying the destructive storms since 1948. He had made many important
scientific discoveries, but had never seen a tornado in person until this
date. He caught his first "live" twister in Colorado.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: We have our first tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane
Season on this Sunday, June 11th. It will be the first of many if the
experts are right. NOAA is predicting 13 to 16 named storms. Eight to ten
of those are expected to go onto to become hurricanes and four to six will
go into to become major hurricanes. Dr. William Gray and his team at
Colorado State University issued their updated forecast on may 31st. It
calls for 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 5 major storms. These numbers
compare to the long term averages of 11 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2
major hurricanes.

ALBERTO: A disorganized tropical storm for sure, Alberto is not very
impressive. But Air Force reconnaissance did find tropical storm force
winds in the system this morning and the storm was upgraded from depression
status. Thunderstorms have been trying to form around the exposed center
today, but they are having a hard time due to strong southwesterly winds
that are shearing the storms away from the center. This hostile environment
will continue to make it hard for the storm to intensify. Only slight
intensification is expected.

LANDFALL: Alberto presents a difficult forecast. A weak storm like the one
we currently have is steered predominantly by low levels winds, which would
strand the storm in the central Gulf. Major forecast models still expect
the system to be steered northeasterly in advance of a trough dropping into
the Gulf Coastal region. This still is the official forecast, and carries
the storm to the Florida Big Bend area Tuesday morning as a tropical storm.
The storm crosses Florida and emerges into the Atlantic, paralleling the
coasts of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. It then races
northeastward as a fairly potent non-tropical low as it moves over cooler
water.

IMPACT ON COASTAL SECTIONS: If the official track materializes, Alberto
will bring tropical storm force winds to the Florida Coast north of Tampa.
Minor storm surges of 2-4 feet will affect the coast south of landfall.
Very heavy rains will accompany the storm. To the north of the landfall, a
few showers may affect areas as far west as Panama City. Clouds were
already rotating over the Florida Panhandle and will continue though
tomorrow along with the showers. A decent northerly breeze will kick in
also. The threat of rip currents will be elevated.

OUR FORECAST: A weak cold front is heading our way and will approach the
state tomorrow. A few showers could break out late tonight. Those rain
chances will increase tomorrow, but the chance of any significant rainfall
is slim. Still, some of the storms could be on the strong side tomorrow
thanks to increasing moisture from the Gulf and the spark of the front.
Drier air will filter in starting Tuesday and dry conditions will prevail
through the end of the week. The weekend should seem the typical afternoon
and evening thunderstorms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: Thunderstorm downbursts (straight-line winds) often
have winds exceeding those produced by some tornadoes. A downburst estimated
to be 160 mph blew a home near Rowena, South Dakota, totally off its
foundation and scattered debris for several miles, killing two people.

...Another Hot One...

GOOD MORNING! Alabama broiled on Saturday. Under a hot sun, temperatures
soared into the middle 90s at many locations. The state's hot spot was
Dothan, where the mercury topped out at 98F. It was 94F at the Birmingham
Airport, 95F at Calera and 96F at Pinson. Turn up the heat a degree or two
and you will have today. These readings are some 7-10 degrees above normal.
Today will be the last of the extremely hot days.

RELIEF IN SIGHT: Not in the form of a tropical system, but rather a cold
front that will approach Alabama from the north tomorrow. Isolated showers
and storms will accompany the front tomorrow, but widespread beneficial rain
is not in the offing. But some of the storms could be strong.

TROPICS: TD #1 is near the western tip of Ciba this morning. The low is
moving slowly northward and will enter the Gulf. It will move pretty far
out into the middle Gulf before turning northeast on Monday ahead of the
frontal trough. It will likely make landfall early Tuesday morning near
Cedar Key, Florida, north of Tampa. It will become a tropical storm later
today and be named Alberto, but conditions do not favor significant
intensification. Alberto should not affect Alabama's weather.

OUR FORECAST: Dry conditions should prevail through the coming week behind
the cold front. We can't rule out a storm complex in the northwesterly flow
pattern that will be in place this week, but the next real rain chance seems
to be out past at the next seven days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The first federal Disaster Declaration is issued for
parts of Minnesota hard ht by the beginning stages of the Great Midwest
Flood of 1993. By August, parts of nine states were declared disaster
areas. The entire state of Iowa was declared a disaster area. The flood
was the worst in the twentieth century in the U.S., lasting for months,
rather than the usual weeks for floods. Damage totaled almost $20 billion.
More than 50,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. More than 75 small towns
were completely flooded.
