THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Showers and thunderstorms are moving to the
southeast across North and West Alabama this Saturday afternoon. The rain
area is associated with a surface trough and attendant cool front that is
pushing across western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. With a very
tropical airmass in place across the South, rainfall rates have been
impressive. One to two inch amounts per hour have been common, and some
flash flooding has occurred as a result. Water was reported over road early
this morning in Colbert County. Flash flood warnings were issued for
Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin Counties.

The storms have also been prodigious lightning producers, putting out a sea
of strikes, especially across West Central Alabama. One storm in Pickens
County briefly showed indications of being severe around noon, but no
significant reports of severe weather have been received.

Showers and thunderstorms were approaching the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa
metro areas at 1 p.m. The storms near the Mississippi border are stronger,
but any storms this afternoon will be capable of very dangerous lightning
and very heavy rainfall. We can't rule out the possibility of an isolated
report of wind damage or two. Additional warnings might be required, but
severe weather watches are not expected to be necessary.

TONIGHT: A few showers and storms were forming back over Mississippi behind
the main rain area and ahead of the cool front. So, we will have to leave
in a chance of showers and thunderstorms for the overnight hours.

WHERE WILL FRONT END UP? I have a hunch that the front will hang up to the
northwest of us here in Central Alabama. This will keep us in shower and
storm chances tomorrow. Indications are that drier air will begin to filter
in to Alabama on Monday, sending those rain chances into a downward trend.
So, as we head into the new week, looks like things will be getting drier
and hotter. Expect mostly sunny to at worst partly cloudy skies Monday and
Tuesday, with only the slightest chance of a PM storm. There is a chance
that a northwesterly flow aloft could send a thunderstorm complex our way,
but only time will tell. Another front will approach the state late in the
week, once again increasing those shower and storm chances.

TROPICS: Our up and down disturbance off the east Coast of Florida has
flared up a little today. An Air Force plane finished its reconnaissance
mission shortly after noon and is headed back to base at Keesler. The
system is about 250 miles east southeast of Savannah, Georgia. As it moves
west northwest at about 10 mph, it will probably reach land Sunday evening,
somewhere along the Georgia or South Carolina coast. The weak low pressure
system over the southern Gulf of Mexico still shows no organization this
afternoon. Even if it were to develop, it would be slow now. It should
continue westward toward the Texas coast.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A rare killer tornado struck Edmonton, Alberta in
Canada. Twenty seven people died in the F4, making it Canada's deadliest
twister ever.

..More Storms Around...

GOOD MORNING! It is another warm and humid morning across Alabama on this
final day of July. On the weather maps, we find a cold front that extends
from low pressure over southern Ontario, Canada across Ohio to near Memphis.
The front is a slow mover, and it will keep us in shower and storm chances
through Monday. Slow but steady wins the race they say, however, and this
front may live up to that, as it is expected to push through the area by
Tuesday.

TROPICS: Notice that the front appears it will be the main influencer of
Alabama's weather through the weekend, not our tropical system in the Gulf.
The low pressure system in the southern Gulf just can't seem to get its act
together. There is a chance that it still could, but that does not look as
likely as it once did. Where it will go depends on how it develops. If it
can strengthen into a storm, it would probably come north, and have more of
an impact on our weather.

The other system is about 100 miles southeast of Jacksonville, Florida this
morning. This low pressure system may still become a tropical depression
this morning, but that also does not look as likely. It is does become a
tropical storm, it will be named Alex. It will probably come ashore on the
South Carolina coast late tonight.

REST OF OUR FORECAST: With the tropics out of the way, we will watch the
front finally gain the impetus to push south of the area by Tuesday. Drier
air will filter in behind the front, giving us a respite from the rain
chances, but it might be short-lived, as we will find ourselves in a
northwesterly flow aloft. We will have to leave in a chance of
showers/storms for the rest of the week because of this. Another front will
push through on Friday, raising out rain chances.

ON THIS DATE IN 1949: Lightning struck a baseball field at Baker, Florida
while a game was in progress. The shortstop and third baseman were
instantly killed and the second baseman was fatally injured. Fifty
spectators were also injured. The lightning bolt dug a twenty foot long
ditch through the infield.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON! Bill Murray here, into the saddle for an unusual Friday
afternoon appearance as J.B. attends the traditional annual ABC3340 weather
intern lunch. It is going to be an interesting weekend, weather wise, here
in Alabama as we keep one eye on an active tropical scene and one eye on an
approaching cold front.

TROPICS: It has been a quiet season so far in the tropical Atlantic. We
still have not see our first tropical storm, but that may be about to
change. The most important disturbance to us here in Alabama is a weak
surface low in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Thunderstorm activity with
this feature continues to be non-existent, but there is the potential for
this system to develop as it moves northwest and then north across the Gulf
of Mexico. By Sunday afternoon, it should be about 250 miles south of
Pensacola. It could be a tropical depression, or perhaps even a tropical
storm by then. It should reach the northern Gulf somewhere between New
Orleans and Pensacola on Monday.

The second system is an upper level low over the Atlantic, east of the
northern Bahamas. This system is certainly more impressive on satellite
this morning and there is still evidence of a closed low pressure system at
the surface now. The system has potential to develop into a tropical
depression as it moves northwest. An Air Force Reconnaissance plane is
enroute to investigate this system as I write this. It will impact the
Carolinas.

OUR WEATHER: Low pressure over Missouri this afternoon is trailing a cold
front back into eastern Texas. There are lots of showers and storms in
advance of this front. Showers and storms are on the increase here in
Alabama, as well, in response to increasing moisture levels. The front make
it to about Memphis Saturday morning before it begins to grind to a halt.
It will remain stationary or weaken just to the northwest of Alabama for the
remainder of the weekend. This will mean a good chance of showers and
storms at times during the weekend. The Gulf tropical system may increase
our rain chances in the Monday-Tuesday time frame. We will have to wait and
see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: Famous Hurricane Celia was born on this date in the
Northwest Caribbean Sea. The system had been tracked all the way across the
Atlantic since it came off the African Coast on July 23. Celia would go on
to become the most destructive storm until that time to strike the Lone Star
State, producing nearly $500 million in damage. Celia is unusual because
its winds were its greatest weapon. Normally, storm surge is usually the
most dangerous part of a landfalling hurricane. Because of where Celia
reached the coast, near Corpus Christi, damage from the storm surge was
negligible. Celia is notable because of a massive burst of wind that struck
much of the city of Corpus Christi. After several minutes of 80 mph
sustained winds, the anemometer suddenly jumped to a peak of 161 mph for
several seconds. Eyewitnesses all over the city reported the same
phenomenon. The powerful winds were very destructive. So, Carla (1961) was
stronger and larger, but Celia produced more damage. Only 16 people died in
the storm.

..Watching the Gulf of Mexico...

All eyes in the weather office will be on the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. A surface low pressure area, west of Fort Myers, Florida, is forecast to develop into a tropical depression at some point today, and possibly a tropical storm by tomorrow. Most of the computer models move this system to the northwest this weekend, with a gradual turn to the north likely by early next week. Best bet now, based on a blend of computer models, is for a strong tropical storm or a minimal hurricane to make landfall in the general area from New Orleans to Mobile early Monday. Sea water temperatures are in the upper 80s just off the coast, so we will have to watch for rapid intensification as it approaches the coast.

BUT… We stress we are very early in the game with this tropical system, and major changes are possible in that general forecast.

ANOTHER ONE TO WATCH: Another tropical depression is expected to form today east of the Bahamas, and that system is forecast to move in the general direction of the south Atlantic coast over the weekend. This one could move ashore anywhere from Daytona Beach, Florida to Cape Hatteras, NC.

OUR WEEKEND: Tropical weather aside, there will be a general increase in moisture over the next 3 days, and we will forecast scattered to numerous showers and storms through Sunday. There will be some good breaks in the rain, and a little sun from time to time, but a few heavy downpours are also a good bet. The tropical system in the Gulf could bring a risk of heavy rain and flooding early next week if we stay on the east side of the system.

OZONE: A code yellow forecast today, meaning moderate air quality is expected.

OUR ATTENTION TURNS SOUTHWARD: We are doing that for two reasons. One is moist Gulf air beginning to surge back northward and the other is growing concern about what may be forming in the tropics. Already a low pressure area is beginning to form over the SE Gulf. This low is expected to move generally toward the WNW, crossing the central Gulf. By midday Sunday, it should be passing some 100 miles or so south of Mobile. The unknown at this time is whether this system will take on tropical characteristics. Conditions are favorable for slow development during the next day or two. The National Hurricane Center plans to send an aircraft into the system tomorrow if necessary.

And that’s not all. A disturbed weather area about 500 miles east of Nassau in the Bahamas is gradually becoming better organized. The winds upstairs are becoming favorable for a tropical depression to come out of this during the next day or so. A recon plane may also go into that area.

The sea surface temperature across the Gulf is very warm and tropical storms absolutely love warm ocean waters. So at least one ingredient is there.
So what does this mean for Alabama? It points to a steady increase in deep Gulf moisture spreading northwest across the state. We expect scattered showers and thunderstorms to occur Friday, mostly in the afternoon, and they may increase in number late in the day. Also a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. At some point during all of this, we may have some locally heavy rainfall. There will be breaks in the rain.

AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms all the way through the weekend. Not an all day rain. There won’t be as much sun as usual. High temperatures will be in the 88-90 range. The water temperature just off Dauphin Island is a very warm 88.

LAST NIGHT’S COOL SPOTS: Space is short, so let’s mention a few places that were 65 degrees or cooler:

59 in Russellville, Meridianville, DeSoto State Park
60 in Valley Head and Muscle Shoals
61 in Scottsboro, Cullman, Huntsville, Fayette
62 in Pinson, Jasper, Decatur
63 in Ashland and Talladega
64 in Trussville
65 in Tuscaloosa

QUICK STOPS: Major flash flooding in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. The NWS reports between 8 and 13 inches of rain overnight in SE Tarrant and South Dallas Counties. Numerous water rescues. Many roads flooded...35 in Stanley, Idaho was the USA cool spot...a killer heat wave in progress at this time in 1930. 107 in Birmingham for the city’s highest temperature ever recorded...115 in Holly Springs—the highest of all time for the entire state of Mississippi.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With her hair cut so short, Little Miss Molly looks like a pom-pom again. Her body feels like velvet but her head and tail still bushy...as soon as we headed to the vet yesterday, she began shaking from fright...she was so glad to get back home...on a late night walk I got bit twice...hope I don’t come down with South Nile Virus...forgot to stuff a sheet of Bounce in my shirt...more about that later...short on space today but I have one more crazy cow story I want to tell one day next week. Life goes on.

..One More Dry Day...

Most of north and central Alabama will remain dry today, but tropical moisture is lurking just to the south and east, and will return tomorrow. Thunderstorms should return tomorrow afternoon during the heat of the day, and the weekend is looking a bit unsettled as well.

We will forecast scattered to numerous showers and storms on Saturday and Sunday as deep tropical moisture remains in place, and a surface front approaches from the northwest. A few heavy downpours are certainly possible during the afternoon hours. Daytime temperatures over the weekend will peak in the upper 80s in most places.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF? A low pressure disturbance over the Florida peninsula is moving westward, and some of the computer models are suggesting this system could develop into a tropical depression over the next few days. We will keep an eye on it, as the Gulf is a favored area for tropical storm formation in July. Should this ultimately grow into a tropical storm, the name will be “Alex”.

ORANGE ALERT: A code orange ozone alert is in effect today for the Birmingham metro area (specifically Jefferson and Shelby counties), meaning air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, like people with asthma. Consider avoiding drive-thoughs during the middle of the day, putting gas in your car after 6:00 p.m. Air quality should improve tomorrow and into the weekend.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Juneau, Alaska measured 1.07” of rain yesterday with a high of 61 degrees. The tropical disturbance over Florida dropped 2.43” on Miami Beach. Hottest places in the nation yesterday were Death Valley, CA and Lake Havasu City, AZ with 118.

AN OCTOBER-ISH FEELING: Unfortunately all of Alabama is not experiencing
the pleasant weather like the northern half of the state but let's celebrate
these morning lows:

59 in Russellville, DeSoto State Park, Russell Cave
National Monument
60 in Decatur, Huntsville, Union Grove, Florence
61 in Cullman and Ft. Payne
62 in Fayette and Collinsville
63 in Pinson
64 in Ashland, Jasper, Talladega
65 in Birmingham, Trussville, Tuscaloosa,
Hackleburg and Black Creek (NE Etowah County)
66 in Wedowee and Shelby County Airport
67 in Anniston

It will be almost that cool again tonight. After that the pesky warm moist
air starts spreading back toward the north and NW. while we will get through
most of Thursday without rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms will show
up later Friday. We think our best chance of rain and the largest amounts
will be over the weekend.

MORE ABOUT MONDAY'S FLOOD: Two gentlemen from Bluff Park gave us very
interesting rainfall totals from the flash flooding Monday afternoon.
Yesterday we mentioned 6.64 inches from Guy Dewees. Today, Fred Martin sent
a photograph of his rain guage which was marked to receive a max of 6.5
inches, but the rain level was clearly one-half inch above that, meaning
about 7 inches!

TROPICAL WEATHER: Clouds and thunderstorms extend from Florida eastward
across the Bahamas and into the Atlantic. All of this was moving slowly
W-NW, but conditions are not favorable for tropical development.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Since school will be starting soon in some areas, you
may be interested in beach weather for the weekend. Look for only a few
showers Thursday and Friday, but an increase in showers and thunderstorms on
Saturday and Sunday with highs near 90. The surf temperature off Dauphin
Island is a very warm 88.

QUICK NOTES: Code yellow again today for our air quality...high in
Starkville, Mississippi yesterday was a cool 77 as compared to 100 on
Sunday...the high was only 73 in Cullman and 75 in Huntsville-about 15
degrees cooler than normal for late July...three inches of rain in Baltimore
in the last 24 hours. The whole Eastern Seaboard was soaked with 2.52 in
NYC...on this date in 1993 during the great Mississippi River flood,
hundreds of burial vaults and caskets were dug out of the ground near
Hardin, Missouri.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is at the PBS (Puppy Beauty
Shop) today getting a short trim. The place seems so quiet and I miss her a
bunch. I got up at 5:15, poured a cup of coffee at 5:16 and I felt two
little paws sliding down the back of my leg. Yep, she was awake and ready.
There was a nice October-ish feel to our early morning walk. . Miss Molly
jumped a rabbit again near the north end of the walking track. She has
gotten to where she expects that and pokes her little nose in the underbrush
hoping to frighten one of the rabbits every morning. It's just a big part of
her life and I enjoy watching her grow up. Life goes on. Yes, we enjoy it!

..Lots of Sun; Lower Humidity...

Dry air now covers the northern half of Alabama, and it should set the stage
for relatively pleasant mid-summer weather today with ample sunshine and
lower humidity values. Showers and storms that form during the heat of the
afternoon should be confined to the southern third of the state, where deep
moisture lingers.

That moisture begins to return northward by the end of the week, and a few
scattered afternoon storms could show up by Friday.

The weekend ahead looks a bit unsettled thanks to a developing upper trough
to the west, and ample tropical moisture in the low levels. We expect
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday
afternoon, with daytime temperatures peaking in the 88 to 91 degree range
for most communities.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? An ABC 33/40 viewer, Guy Dewees, who lives in Bluff Park
reported a rain total of 6.64" on Tuesday. That certainly explains the
severe flooding along Patton Creek in Vestavia and Hoover.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A disturbed area of weather persists in the Atlantic about
200 miles east of the Bahamas, and upper air winds are expected to become a
little more favorable for some development over the next few days as the
system moves to the west/northwest. The rest of the Atlantic basin remains
quiet.

ROAMING: The high yesterday in Cullman was only 73 degrees, twenty degrees
cooler than Bismarck, North Dakota where the high was 93. Hottest place in
the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 116. Baltimore picked up
2.89" of rain yesterday thanks to a slow moving cold front. Syracuse, NY was
also soaked; their total foe the day was 2.71".

A BREAK FROM TOO MUCH RAIN: Drier air was ever so slowly moving southward
across north Alabama this afternoon. It will not arrive early enough to keep
a few showers from forming over the eastern counties.

However, skies will gradually clear tonight over the north and central
sections. By daybreak, you may experience some temperatures in the mid 60s
when you go out to walk your cat or grab the morning paper. Wednesday will
have mostly sunshine and lower humidity. During all of this time, rich deep
moisture will not be that far away. It will stay parked along the Gulf Coast
just itching for a chance to come back north and shroud us in high humidity
and showers and thunderstorms. We think you will notice an increase in
humidity later Thursday. Some scattered showers and thunderstorms will
arrive Friday and become more numerous on Saturday. Would not be surprised
if we have to deal with some more locally heavy rain at some point over the
weekend. Here are selected rainfall amounts for the last 24 hours. (We
can't possibly list them all)

2.17 inches in Alexander City
1.43 in Anniston
2.77 in Haleyville
2.77 at Jordan Dam
1.28 in Tuscaloosa
1.61 at Birmingham Airport
2.10 in Livingston
2.80 in Wedowee
3.43 at Union Grove
4.76 in Weaver (two-day total)

TROPICAL WEATHER: A cloudy area with scattered thunderstorms over the
western Bahamas was connected with a westward moving tropical wave.
Conditions are not favorable for additional development.

WRAP UP: The Birmingham metro area was under a code yellow-moderate air
quality again today...121 in Death Valley was the USA hot spot
Monday...chilliest this morning was 34 at Doylesville, Colorado, but more
unusual was the 46-degree low at Peshtigo, Wisconsin and Grand Meadow,
Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I'm feeling sorry again for my little 9-pound
pal. Late yesterday we had a lot more window-shaking thunder and very
dangerous lightning. Little Miss Molly gets quiet at times like that and
will not let me out of her sight. If I am working (which I am always doing
during warnings) she hides under my desk and cuddles as close to my feet as
possible. She prefers to get on my desk and curl up against my keyboard. We
try to hold and comfort her as much as possible...she had impossible
sleeping hours last night and was loudly ringing the little bell to go
outside at midnight. After we got back she piled a bunch of toys in the
middle of the floor and stood over them wagging her tail. It was a clear
message that I had not played with her enough...so we had a 30-minute
playtime. Thought sure she would sleep late but at 5:15 she was standing
over me poking my arm with her paw...so it was up and walking again. Life is
so interesting with that little one but I would not want it any other
way...I have just gotta write a book about that little girl...hope I can get
all my marbles in the same ring and get started on that before too long.
Life goes on.

... Drier Air Arrives Later Today...

We will maintain the chance of a few showers across north Alabama this
morning, but noticeably drier air is expected to arrive this afternoon,
pushing the rain into the southern half of the state. The drier air should
mean slightly cooler nighttime temperatures and lower daytime humidity
values through mid-week for areas along and north of interstate 20.

We will not mention any rain in our formal forecast tomorrow and Wednesday
as we expect most of the showers and storms to stay mostly south of
Montgomery. Then, by Friday the muggy air begins to return and we will bring
back the chance of widely scattered storms.

WEEKEND PEEK: A nice surge of tropical moisture, and a developing upper
trough over the central U.S. should mean scattered to numerous thunderstorms
on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with temperatures peaking in the 88 to 91
degree range for most communities.

MONDAY'S SOAKERS: Flash flooding developed over parts of Jefferson county
yesterday afternoon with some cars submerged in spots around Patton Creek in
Vestavia and Hoover. Numerous other streets were flooded for a time in the
Birmingham metro area. Rain totals included:

Huffman 3.35"
Haleyville 2.77"
Cullman 2.57"
Manchester 2.31"
Alexander City 2.10"
Bessemer 1.97"
Nauvoo 1.91"

A lot of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama Sunday and Sunday night
and some of them became severe. The scattered wind damage was mostly to
trees and power lines, but one building was reported destroyed in downtown
Haleyville. There was some very heavy amounts of rain. Let's look at some
examples:

4.00 inches in Weaver (Calhoun County)
1.39 in Black Creek (1 inch fell in only 15 minutes)
1.80 at Oxford (one mile from Anniston Airport)
2.76 in downtown Florence
2.76 in Greystone Cove (North Shelby County)
2.30 at nearby Greystone Farms
2.17 at Gadsden Steam Plant
2.42 at Horseshoe Bend
1.72 in Steele
1.57 in Ft. Payne

(At Greystone Farms, 2.15 inches of the rain fell in only 30 minutes. At
Weaver, only .87 of an inch at fallen all month before yesterday's 4 inches.

SOME CHANGES AHEAD: A cool front was near the NW corner of Alabama early
this afternoon. More showers and thunderstorms were developing across
Alabama ahead of the front. Some of those will again dump very heavy rain.
The front will gradually push southeastward to central Alabama by daybreak.
Highs on Tuesday will only be in the mid 80s and the humidity will be lower,
especially on Wednesday. Night time lows will drop into the mid 60s
Wednesday morning with a mostly sunny, less humid day. Showers will start
spreading back northward on Thursday, mainly over south Alabama, but we will
see some showers and thunderstorms return to central Alabama by Friday. (See
our day-by day forecast for details)

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic Basin continues quiet. For a time the
National Hurricane Center was concerned about a disturbance south of Long
Island, but it is now merging with a frontal zone and tropical development
is not likely.

MONDAY RAMBLINGS: The temperature reached an estimated 126 in Death Valley
Sunday afternoon...the lowest in the USA this morning was 36 in Shirley
Basin, Wyoming...the Mississippi State Meteorology School reported the
hottest of the year Sunday in Starkville-100!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This is what I call "IS" weather. That means,
"Instant Sweat" when you step outside. That's what happened to me despite a
very early morning walk with little Miss Molly. We decided to walk the lower
track. There are so many beautiful back yards off the walking track, that it
took forever. She paid no attention to two fawn statues close to the track,
but she was temporarily spooked by a similar statue of two baby rabbits. We
came back down the middle of the street. As she approached a large black
plastic bag on the curb full of grass cuttings, she sniffed all around the
sack and did not see a jet black cat resting against the sack until she was
literally three inches away. The cat ran off several feet and stopped. Molly
was going to chase, but the cat hissed loudly. Molly literally jumped
backwards and landed between my feet for protection. She knows she is
supposed to chase cats and rabbits and play with dogs. Life goes on.

...Wet Start to the Week...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Baltimore, Maryland. Polished off a dozen of
the most beautiful steamed crabs that you have ever seen in one of the
countless seafood restaurants here last night. Caked in that wonderful Old
Bay seasoning, you just can't beat 'em. Kind of like one of those Alabama
summertime thunderstorms...

SPEAKING OF WHICH: Boy, it was a stormy Sunday across Alabama. There were
many reports of hail to nickel size and winds of up to 60 mph. The ABC3340
Weather Watcher at Weaver in Calhoun County reported 3.87 inches of rain.
Dave Jones in Bibbville in Bibb County reported four inches of rain in his
rain gauge. Radar estimates were as high as three to four inches over the
Marion/Winston County line.

THE WEEK AHEAD: All of the convective activity again today is going to be
courtesy of an approaching upper trough and accompanying cold front that
will sweep through the area late tonight into Tuesday morning. You've
certainly been reading about those record lows over the upper Midwest and
Plains states the last couple of days. The unseasonably cool high pressure
responsible for the records will bulge down into Alabama for the midweek
time frame, giving us drier and slightly less humid conditions for Wednesday
and Thursday. Notice I didn't say cooler, or much cooler, but we will see
some overnight lows in the 60s. Look for near seasonable levels for the
remainder of the week. Moisture levels will begin to increase by Friday as
a southeasterly flow redevelops over Alabama.

EPILOGUE: HURRICANE DANNY: Hurricane Danny dissipated on this date in
1997. No other named tropical cyclone would be present in the Atlantic for
the next thirty eight days, lasting throughout August. 1961 was the only
other year since aircraft reconnaissance flights began in the 1940s to have
no Atlantic tropical storms in the month of August.
