GOOD MORNING! Most historical accounts of July 4th, 1776 record the weather
in Philadelphia as having been oppressively hot. Indeed, the spring and
early summer had been very warm and the days leading into July downright
hot, but thunderstorms on the 1st and 2nd had mercifully cooled things off
by the 3rd, when deliberations over the wording of the document was
undertaken by the delegates. Cooler conditions were still occurring on the
4th, when the official document was released.

WEATHER FLIP FLOP: Well, it didn't take long to completely turn our mild,
wet weather pattern upside down. Storms pushed across the northern part of
the state last night as that upper level trough lifted out to the northeast.
Just that quickly, subsidence on the back side of the trough and building
high pressure will virtually eliminate rain chances and allow our
temperatures to heat up. I was worried about morning shower possibilities,
but those are long gone. Readings today will make it into the 90s across
much of the area. Heat indices will briefly exceed 100 degrees this
afternoon, and probably on Monday also. This is not enough for a heat
advisory, but everyone should exercise caution if involved in any outdoor
activities.

MONDAY: Most folks off tomorrow also, and more fine weather is on tap,
except for the warm temperatures. Expect the same for Tuesday and
Wednesday.

REST OF THE WEEK: A little weakness in the high pressure ridge will allow a
front to approach from the north on Thursday. This front will likely stall
in our vicinity, keeping rain chances in the forecast for Friday, but the
front should wash out by the weekend.

FIREWORKS FORECAST: The weather looks good for tonight's Thunder on the
Mountain and various other fireworks displays. If you are going to fire
your own pyrotechnics, make sure they are legal in your community and check
out fireworks safety guidelines from the National Council on Fireworks
Safety in today's Weather Talk.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON! I have used about every word in my weather thesaurus to
describe the weather pattern over the Deep South the past two weeks. Messy,
damp, wet, showery, unusual all come to mind. Fortunately, the pattern
appears to be finally breaking, but not before it puts a bit of a damper on
outdoor holiday activities across the area. But hey, we have learned to
adapt. As I ran out to the store Tuesday night in a nice little shower, I
thought, this must be what Seattle is like. Of course, we get a lot more
rain here in Birmingham that they do in Seattle. Ours just comes in bigger
doses. Theirs is spread out more.

PATTERN NAMES: Readers responded to my request for their names for the
rainy pattern we have been struck in for the past several days. Here are a
couple: Martha Wilson of Gardendale calls it "showers of blessing" since
she didn't have to run the sprinklers. Amen! Jeff Newman of Vance has
dubbed it the "Frog Days of June." Very clever! Anyone else want to add to
it? Email me.

THE FORECAST: Here in North Central Alabama, high clouds from a dying
thunderstorm complex over Mississippi have given mostly cloudy skies to some
area, with others remaining mostly sunny to partly cloudy. The air over
North Central Alabama is drier and less unstable, hence the lack of
thunderstorms. Showers and storms were developing over southern Mississippi
and Southwest Alabama this afternoon. This activity should stay south of
Clanton as it moves eastward. We will still maintain the chance of
scattered thunderstorms developing during the afternoon hours. The axis of
the trough will spread into Alabama tonight, bringing a renewed chance of
additional showers and storms during the overnight hours, perhaps lasting
into Sunday morning. The precip chances should be best over eastern
sections of the areas of Sunday, with shower and storm chances lasting into
afternoon. Western sections should see diminishing chances by lunchtime,
with just widely scattered storms later in the day, if any at all. Firework
viewing opportunities should be good across the area Sunday night. As we
head into the coming week, a high pressure ridge will begin to build into
Alabama, spelling a return to a more typical summer time pattern. This
means more sun, warmer temperatures and a more widely scattered distribution
of afternoon and evening showers and storms.

FLORIDA FIRES: On this date in 1998, severe wildfire outbreak continued
across Florida as severe drought continued. Wildfires would consume 480,000
acres of land, destroyed 356 structures and caused over $270 million in
damages. Smoke from the vicious Florida fires spread all the way into the
Florida Straits, to Cuba and even to the Bahamas. Visibility was down to
only one mile in both Havana, Cuba and at Freeport in the Bahamas. The
Pepsi 400 NASCAR race at Daytona was cancelled because of fires in area.
Track officials did not want to put any more pressure on the already harried
local residents. At least 30,000 people evacuated coastal Flagler County,
Florida as fires in three sections of the area threatened to converge into
one big fire.

...Dog Days Begin Today...

GOOD MORNING! You know that a weather pattern has worn out its welcome when
local meteorologists start to give it names. The current pattern, which has
been in place for as long as I can remember is finally coming to a merciful
end. Alabama had been sandwiched between a large upper trough to our west
and a strong Bermuda high to our east now for many days. Just Wednesday, I
noticed one NWS forecaster had named it the June Monsoon. Another called it
the Dance of the Shortwaves. If you would like to give it a name,
(remember, be nice) please send me an e-mail.

WELCOME TO DOG DAYS: July 3rd marks the official beginning of the Dog Days
of Summer. The Dog Days are named for the Egyptian belief that during the
period of time from July 3 through August 11 when the Dog Star Sirius rises
and falls with the sun, that the star added to the heat of the Sun.

STORMY SATURDAY?: A whirling dervish of an upper low is spinning across
Missouri this morning. Here in Alabama, a warm, moist airmass remains in
place. As the low moves east, it will push a trough closer to the state.
This means a pretty good chance of showers and thunderstorms at just about
anytime today. Judging the timing is difficult, but storms should be most
prevalent during afternoon and again late night.

FOURTH FORECAST: It looks like the trough will be over Alabama on Sunday.
We could deal with some morning showers or storms over western and middle
sections, pushing across East Alabama during the early afternoon. We are
keeping our fingers crossed that Sunday overall will feature less in the way
of showers and storms. Fireworks look good Sunday night.

WEEK AHEAD: It looks like we will return to more of a Dog Days type pattern
with more sunshine, few storms and warmer temperatures as we head into the
new week. By Monday, a weak ridge will build into the state, leading to the
typical summertime pattern. Another front will approach from the north by
Thursday, potentially raising our rain chances again.

==================================================================

THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Lots and lots of outdoor stuff going on the next few
days. We wish we could promise dry weather for all the events. Can't do
that, but the outlook for Sunday and Monday is beginning to look a little
more encouraging. However, those two days will not be completely free of
showers and storms.

Some slightly drier air aloft spread into West Alabama this afternoon. As a
result, most of the storms were forming east of I-65. But the heat of the
afternoon will set off some more showers and thunderstorms almost anywhere.

The heaviest rain in the last 24 hours occurred over the east and NE part of
the state. Over one inch fell at Ft. Payne, Wadley and Hartselle. Almost an
inch fell at DeSoto State Park.

We still have an upper level disturbance to our west and NW that should give
us a better chance of showers and storms tomorrow. Here in Central Alabama
the better chance will be in the afternoon and evening and a few spots will
get locally heavy rain. We still expect scattered showers and thunderstorms
on Sunday, but maybe not as many as in previous forecasts. The better chance
on Sunday will be across the northern part of the state. For Monday, when
most people will be off from work, the scattered storms should be fewer in
number. With the thinning of the storms, it's going to heat up. Don't be
surprised to see some thermometers reach the 90-degree mark early in the
week.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: The entire Atlantic Basin is quiet with no Alex
in sight. (He will be the first named storm of the season.) Along the
Alabama-NW Florida coast, there is a good chance of showers and storms
Saturday. Then, scattered ones on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. There should
be some good intervals of sunshine during that time. The sea surface
temperature off the Alabama coast in 85.

THE BENEFICIAL RAIN: All of the showers and storms that we have had lately
held down temperatures to mostly the mid 80s. We could have it much worse at
this time. Alabama suffered through critical heat waves in 1952, 1954 and
1980. In 1954, the temperature in Birmingham topped out at 100 or above on
13 days. 1952 had 11 such days and some wells went dry that had never been
dry before. 1980 was also a killer heat wave.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: I know this sounds crazy, way back in 1843, an
alligator fell from the sky over Charleston. He probably got sucked up by a
tornado and was dumped out when it dissipated. ..some of the chillier USA
temperatures this morning included 27 at the Flagstaff Arboretum in Northern
Arizona. It was 32 in Grand Canyon Airport and in Leadville, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If my life-long pal, Little Miss Molly could
make out her own schedule, I think she would go for six half-mile walks per
day, play for six hours and sleep 15 of the 24 hours. She lives the life of
Miss Riley...I got up at 4:30 this morning and she was stretching and
yawning and ready to go...talked her into sleeping a bit longer...she is
getting more determined to protect us...she spends a lot of her day sitting
on the back of the couch so she can see out of three windows. Any dog that
walks the track and invades Molly's tiny corner of the world gets an earful.
She can bark so loudly that the concussion lifts her front paws off the
couch. She is very funny to watch. Life goes on, noisy at times.

...Clouds Hang Tough...

The weather didn't exactly feel like July yesterday in Alabama. Not a single
reporting station reached 90 degrees, and places like Huntsville, Muscle
Shoals, and Decatur stayed in the 70s all day. Clouds and occasional showers
will keep temperatures well below normal again today as the soggy summer
weather pattern continues.

THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: We will have to highlight rain and storms once again
tomorrow thanks to a rather strong upper trough for July. In fact, some
spots could see heavy amounts of rain. The trough axis remains to the west
of the state on Sunday, so scattered to numerous showers and storms are
likely for Independence Day with a few intervals of sunshine during the day.

BRIGHTER AND DRIER??: There is still a decent chance that showers and storms
will thin out early next week as the air aloft becomes a little warmer, and
the stronger upper winds shift a little to the north. But, by Wednesday of
next week showers could increase again in response to yet another surface
front that will stall out just north of Alabama.

WATERLOGGED: Mobile measured 16.07" of rain during the month of June, making
it the fourth wettest June on record for the Port City. Really amazing
considering no tropical storm was involved. Out in Texas, the rain total at
D/FW airport for June was 10.49", their second wettest June on record. Also,
June 2004 was the wettest month in Dallas/Fort Worth since May 1982.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely along the central Gulf coast
today, becoming a little more scattered tomorrow and Sunday. Temperatures
will peak in the 84 to 88 degree range, and the latest sea water temperature
along the Alabama coast was 83 degrees.

EVEN THE FROGS ARE GURGLING: Well, that's being a little silly, but it
seems that way. Up front let's say that we don't see any decrease in the
number of showers and thunderstorms until possibly Monday and Tuesday. That
means a good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day all the way
through the weekend. As usual, there will be a wide variation in rainfall
amounts, but some communities will get locally heavy rain each day. The
showers and storms will become numerous at times. These usually happens in
clusters and it doesn't mean every community will get extremely heavy rain.
Yesterday, early evening thunderstorms dumped 3.72 inches of rain at Oak
Grove in West Jefferson County. In the NE part of the county, 1.50 inches
fell in a short time near Clay bringing their total to about 10 inches for
June.

JUNE RAINFALL: All across Central Alabama the normal rainfall for the month
of June is about 3.75 inches. As you scan through this list, you will note
that some areas tripled that amount while other communities-sometimes in the
same county-barely reached normal. The list:

8.46 inches at Montgomery
7.03 at Birmingham Airport
4.97 in Huntsville
16.07 at Mobile
5.07 at Anniston
8.74 at Muscle Shoals
3.07 in the west part of Helena
7.28 in the NE part of Trussville
3.51 in Pelham
3.73 at Greystone Farms
3.55 in Inverness
12.87 at Vincent
10.75 in Nauvoo
6.83 at Black Creek (6.80 since June 12)
4.88 in Hackleburg

Despite all of this rain, Montgomery and Birmingham are still about 2 inches
short for the year, but that could be wiped out with a single thunderstorm.

ELEVATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE: There was a 77 degree range in temperature
across Arizona from 103 in Phoenix yesterday afternoon to a very cold 26
this morning at the Flagstaff Arboretum...In Houston, 18.33 inches of rain
in June brought the 2004 total so far to 45.04 inches-21 inches above
normal. Last year at this time, they had only received 13.35. New Orleans'
total for the year has swelled to 51 inches-18 inches too wet...a little
chilly near the South Pole today with a temperature of 92 below zero and a
wind chill of 147 below!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With a granddaughter staying overnight and
being taught quilting today by her grandmother and me having to watch the
weather more closely, little Miss Molly has been wandering around the house
with a quizzical look. At one time she piled seven of her play toys in the
middle of the floor and gathered them in her paws and every time someone
walked through, she was clearly asking, "Can't somebody take a minute to
play with me?" Even with everybody busy, she has had plenty of tummy rubs
today and her morning walk was uneventful. She is puzzled by all the wet
weather mushrooms and stays clear. Seems all the crows and mocking birds are
out of town for the holiday but life goes on.

...Sunshine Hard to Find...

Yesterday with the ninth consecutive day with measurable rain in Birmingham,
and it looks like the string of wet days will continue into the new month of
July. A blanket of deep moisture is draped across Alabama and the deep
south, and in this kind of pattern a shower or thunderstorm will be possible
at almost anytime during the next four days. Of course, the rain won't be
continuous, and there will be intervals of sunshine, but the overall pattern
still looks fairly wet as we head into the Independence Day weekend.

In fact, a rather strong upper air trough is expected to swing through here
on Saturday which could bring the possibility of heavy rain and even the
chance of some flooding.

The models are suggesting that showers and storms will thin out a bit early
next week, but we aren't ready to buy that solution completely until it
actually happens.

AT THE BEACH: While there will be scattered showers and storms around the
Gulf coast through the weekend, they won't be as numerous as what we are
experiencing up this way. About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with
daytime temperatures peaking in the mid to upper 80s. The water temperature
at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 84 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet and tropical storm formation
is not expected through the holiday weekend.

SOGGY JUNE: J.B. Elliott will have June rain totals on our afternoon package
later today, but Birmingham would up with over seven inches of rain for the
month. Mobile ended June with over sixteen inches! Out in Texas, Austin saw
over 14 inches during June, making it the second wettest June on record.

...June Ends With More Showers...

An unsettled, generally wet weather pattern will persist across Alabama and
the deep south for at least the next three to five days. Rain chances will
remain above normal, with temperatures below normal. In the humid air today,
a shower or storm is possible at just about any time, although we will see a
few peeks of sunshine at times.

By Friday, a rather deep storm for early July will build over the southern
plains states, and could enhance the coverage of showers and storms for at
least a part of the holiday weekend. The heaviest rain is likely for the
northern half of the state, while showers and storms will be more widely
spaced down south, and near the coast. Some flash flooding is certainly
possible at some point between now and Sunday.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of folks southbound as we approach the Fourth of July
weekend. About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day for the central Gulf coast,
with the daily opportunity of scattered showers and storms. The sea water
temperature remains in the mid 80s.

BAMA DOWNPOURS: Flash flooding was reported in parts of Hoover, Homewood,
and Vestavia yesterday due to a slow moving cluster of storms that dropped
up to four inches of rain, based on NEXRAD estimates. At the ABC 33/40
studios in Riverchase, the total was 0.59", and just down the road in Helena
only a few sprinkles were reported.

Flooding was also an issue in Sumter county, where some roads were briefly
underwater.

WET, WET, WET: DFW Airport reported 2.58" of rain yesterday, with flooding
around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Six Flags Over Texas was closed due
to flooding. Tampa, FL was soaked with 4.16" of rain yesterday.

==================================================================

THE RIVER RUNS DEEP: It's the same old story today-a deep river of warm and
very moist air covers Alabama and it extends all the way out to Texas. It is
just sitting there waiting for some disturbance at the surface or aloft to
come by and make it angry enough to dump out lots of rain. Texas is getting
the brunt of the rain now, but there's going to be a good chance of showers
and thunderstorms in Alabama almost every day for the next five to seven
days. Our big problem is the timing of those triggering disturbances. There
will be some days when you may get by without any showers and other days
when you will get a lot of rain. Check our day-by-day forecast and we will
try to pin it down a little better.

Spot checking one community-Cottondale just east of Tuscaloosa-the 33/40
weather watcher reports rain on 17 days so far this month and that is very
typical all across Central Alabama. Clusters of thunderstorms seem to have
visited NE Shelby County more often than most places. The 33/40 weather
watcher in Vincent reports a whopping 12.22 inches of rain so far in June.
IS THIS A FIRST? Can't say for sure, but in my three centuries (seems like)
of weather work, I have never seen this before. Early today 170 counties in
Texas were under a flash flood watch and 14 had warnings. That's a good 65
to 70 percent of the State of Texas. Early today Garner State Park at Uvalde
had 12 feet of water. I could not help notice the irony that Leakey, Texas
was having extensive flash flooding.

AND HOW ABOUT HOUSTON? They got another 1.49 inches of rain in the last 24
hours bringing their June total to 17.42 inches! They have received over 44
inches this year so far, which is 20 inches above normal. Last year they had
only received 13 inches by June 29! (31 inches less than this year)

TROPICAL: Still quiet in the Atlantic Basin with no indication of storm
formation. Let's wait on Alex.

ROAMING: At least the clouds and showers are keeping our temperatures down.
On this date in 1931, it was 106 in Birmingham and 108 in Huntsville...the
high in Nome, Alaska yesterday was 81 an incredible 24 degrees above normal.
Hottest in the USA 112 in Death Valley...lowest this morning, 35 at
Leadville, Colorado. There's a place you can go to cool off. It will be in
the low to mid 30s tonight while it may be raining. That city is high up in
the Rockies at around 10,000 feet elevation. I slid off in a ditch once
trying to get through there during freezing rain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have walked nearly two miles in the last two
days with my little 9-pound dynamo. We were out again early this morning.
Never know what to expect. Little Miss Molly was spooked by an oversized
toadstool. She left the walking track and circumnavigated it by 15 feet.

Yet, she is not afraid to chase away big dogs 10 times her size. Near the
north end of the walking track where the CRs (community rabbits) live, a
little baby rabbit was lying in the grass resting. It took off as we
approached and jumped all the way across the Old Crow Creek. Ten yards
later, one of his parents came zooming out of a backyard and jumped the
ditch. That's when Molly went berserk. I am now very skilled at avoiding
whiplash. Life goes on-soggy at times, but so enjoyable!

...Not Much Sun; Wet at Times...

A new day, but really an old forecast. Lots of tropical moisture and
occasional waves aloft will bring lots of clouds to the deep south today
along with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures
will remain well below normal for late June in Alabama, with highs only in
the low 80s again today (the normal high for today is 89 degrees).
The weather will remain generally unsettled through the coming holiday
weekend. We will see a few decent intervals of sunshine along the way, but
the overall weather pattern certainly doesn't seem to change much for the
next five to seven days. Another surface cold front will approach, and then
stall out to the north of Alabama by Saturday which could enhance shower and
storm formation early in the weekend.

WET AND COOL: So far during "meteorological summer" (since June 1), the
weather here has indeed been rather soggy and not very hot. The warmest
temperature so far in Birmingham is only 92 degrees, and we have reached or
exceeded 90 degrees on only five of the 28 days so far in June. Rain has
fallen on 18 of those 28 days, and Birmingham's total for the month is now
at 6.79". We need about one inch of additional rain for this month to make
the top ten list of wet Junes in Birmingham.

Our wettest June came in 1900 when the Birmingham total was 12.09". Down in
Mobile, they have exceeded that record total for Birmingham, with a whopping
14.89" so far this month.

AROUND THE HORN: Many homes and roads were flooded around Laurel, MS late
yesterday. Hottest placed in the nation yesterday with Death Valley, CA with
115. Custer, SD dropped to a frosty 35 degrees early yesterday.
