...Red Letter Day in Alabama Weather History...

For many Alabamians, the date May 27, 1973 is burnished in their
memories as a red letter day in the state's weather history. A strong
late Spring storm produced the longest track tornado in the state's
history. That storm struck the Bibb County town of Brent. More about
it in today's Weather Blog.

CODE RED: A Code Red Air Quality Alert is in effect for the
Birmingham metro area again today with heavy particulate pollution
from smoke coming from the wildfires over southern Georgia. At-risk
groups (children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung
diseases) are urged to take precautions today: stay inside and no
heavy exercise or work.

HIGH AND DRY: Alabama remains under the influence of high pressure
on this Holiday weekend. This means great weather today and again
tomorrow with a good deal of sunshine. Expect more of the same
tomorrow, and into Thursday. The only difference as we move further
into the week will be the reappearance of an isolated shower or storm
during the afternoon hours Tuesday and Wednesday, with a slightly
better , albeit still small, chance of PM showers and storms on
Thursday.

RAIN CHANCES: By Friday, a trough of low pressure and associated cold
front will bring a much better chance of showers and thunderstorms to
Alabama. Still, the model runs are becoming increasingly stingy with
the precipitation amounts from this systems, and we don't see anything
to offer much short term relief n the dryness, much less make a dent
in our current drought.

LONG RANGE: As we move toward Sunday next weekend, a large trough of
low pressure takes up residence over the Eastern United States.
Alabama comes under a northwesterly flow, which is a good setup for
southeasterly moving disturbance that bring rounds of showers and
storms to the state. The GFS hints that will be the case as we move
through that first week of June.

TROPICS: The GFS is back on the idea of a tropical storm in the Gulf,
this time forming on Saturday June 9th. It moves northeast, hitting
the Florida Peninsula around Tampa. This could spell major relief for
the wildfires, but not any for us.

ANOTHER ALABAMA RED LETTER DAY: A major outbreak of tornadoes from Missouri to
Alabama struck on May 27, 1917. The worst tornado was an afternoon F4
that cut a 50 mile path from Lake County TN into Kentucky, killing 67
and injuring 345 people. Dyersburg TN was also hard hit. In Alabama,
an F3 tornado at mid-evening destroyed much of the town of Carbon Hill
as it cut a 3 block path through the Walker County town. Another set
of tornadoes carved a path across northern Jefferson County into
Blount County. Hardest hit was the town of Sayre, where 9 people
died. There were so many trees uprooted in Bradford that runners on
foot were sent to plead for help. It took a long time to clear the
fallen trees so help could arrive.

...A Glorious Day For Baseball...

Traveling to Atlanta to watch the Braves take on the Phillies at
Turner Field this afternoon. Meanwhile, back in Birmingham, some
excellent baseball is being played at the Hoover Met as the SEC
Baseball Championships wind toward an exciting conclusion. But great
weather in Birmingham and Atlanta for all the games, unless you are
bothered by the smoke…

SMOKE ON THE WATER: And smoke fills the sky over much of Alabama
again today. It is not quite as bad as it has been at times this
week, but it is still noticeable. The smoke is, of course,
emanating from the fires over South Georgia and North Florida. The
Bugaboo Fire in Florida is 90% contained after burning 125,000 acres.
The Big Turnaround Fire in the Okefenokee Fire is still only 50%
contained and had burned over 325,000 acres southeast of Waycross,
Georgia. Fire dangers are critical today across extreme Southeast
Alabama, southern Georgia, the eastern Florida Panhandle and much of
the Florida Peninsula. Moderately low humidities and persistent
easterly winds gusting to over 20 mph will exacerbate the danger in
these areas today. Our fire danger is classified as moderate.

DROUGHT UPDATE: No surprise that the U.S. Drought Monitor rates over
half of Alabama as being in the middle of an extreme drought. This
covers the area from Choctaw County over to Autauga County to
northwest Chambers County. It would take 6-12 inches of rainfall
across the northern half of the state to bring our Long Term Palmer
Drought Severity Index back to -0.5, or normal.

ANY PROSPECTS? Well, maybe. Not in the short run, which is good news
for anyone planning outdoor activities over the Memorial Day holiday
weekend. Outings to the lake, golf games, backyard barbecues and
trips to the mountains or the beach will be u=marred for the most part
by rain chances. I think it is not out of the question that a couple
of isolated thundershowers could develop Monday and Tuesday, mainly
over western and southwestern sections of the area, but that chance is
very small. By Wednesday, a large trough will be setting up to the
west of Alabama. Meanwhile, the high over the western Atlantic will
relocate northward, giving us a more southerly flow, bringing in more
moisture and reducing the smoke. A few showers and storms may break
out Thursday, but the main activity should come on Friday as a cold
front approaches the area.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: 165,000 fans went home disappointed after the
rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte,
NC. After a week of heavy rains, track officials used helicopters to
dry the parking lots. Then a strong thunderstorm dumped 1.60 inches
of rain on Saturday night before the Sunday race, turning the parking
lots back into muck. This created tremendous headaches before the
race as officials had to scramble to create new parking areas.
Officials decided to call off the race at 9:30 p.m. after 276 laps
after the race's second red flag due to rain. Fans and drivers alike
were disappointed that the race was called, especially since it was
not raining at the time of the decision. Officials were concerned
that parking conditions were going from bad to worse and that ending
the race after midnight would jeopardize the safety of fans heading to
their cars.

...Nice Memorial Day Weekend...

You couldn't special order Memorial Day weekend weather that could be
any nicer for here in Alabama. Warm and dry conditions will prevail
through at least Thursday it appears. There is this constantly
gnawing worry about our constantly worsening drought situation. Our
deficit at the Birmingham Airport is now over 14 inches.

WARM AND DRY THROUGH WEDNESDAY: High pressure over the western
Atlantic will prevail through midweek. We can expect sunny to partly
cloudy skies with seasonably to slightly warmer than normal
temperatures. Humidity levels will slowly rise through the period
thanks to the flow around the Atlantic high. Rain chances will be
negligible, however.

PROMISES OF RAIN IN OUR FUTURE? A significant trough of low pressure
will set up to the west of Alabama by midweek. As it rotates toward
the state, we will experience increasing chances of showers and
storms. It now appears that the best chances will come late Friday
night
into Saturday as the front begins to run into the stubborn high
pressure system to the east.

CRYSTAL BALL LAND: After the front eases through next Sunday, high
pressure will build in for the first part of the first full week of
June. By Wednesday, we will start to feel the effects of the
backbuilding East Coast trough with chances of showers and returning
by midweek and lasting into the coming weekend.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The models had been hinting at some sort of
tropical development in the coming week, but they have backed off on
this idea for now. The North Atlantic Hurricane season officially
begins next Friday.

BEACH FORECAST: Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy through the
Memorial Day holiday and into the coming week. The Alabama and
Northwest Florida beaches will see daily doses of afternoon and
evening storms, but the coverage will be limited.

MOUNTAINS FORECAST: Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains of eastern
Tennessee and western North Carolina will see warm afternoon and
comfortably cool nights through the coming week with dry conditions
prevailing.

RECORD TORNADO PATH LENGTH? For many years, it was believed that a
single tornado remained on the ground for seven hours and 293 miles
and 7 hours 20 minutes across Illinois and Indiana on this date in
1917, It was regarded to be the longest continuous path tornado ever
in U.S. history. But it now appears that a family of as many as 8
separate tornadoes caused the path. Nonetheless, the devastation was
still spectacular and terrible. Mattoon IL and Charleston IL were
hard hit, with the F4 twister cutting a path right through the center
of the latter. 101 people were killed and 600 injured. Debris from
Mattoon was carried 50 miles.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Lightning struck two boats being used by the
Lewis and Clark reenactment expedition while the crew was camped at
Hermann, Missouri. There was no damage.

CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM FOR RAIN: For a time, it appeared that we had a
decent chance of some good showers later next week—mainly around
Wednesday and Thursday. The latest model runs have backed off a bit
on that and it now appears our better chance of rain will be next
weekend, say about Saturday (a week from tomorrow). Weather models
that go out more than five days are somewhat like the stock market
and cranky old men. They are subject to changing their minds and flip-
flopping.

Meanwhile, the Birmingham rain deficit since you said Happy New Year
has reached 14 inches. That is most unusual. It will be difficult to
overcome that deficit. Of course, the real answer would be a tropical
depression coming ashore from the North Gulf of Mexico. A tropical
depression can produce very generous rain amounts—almost as if it is
a tropical storm. We definitely do not want a tropical storm or
hurricane.

MEMORIAL DAY: Mostly sunny and dry weather for the Memorial Day
weekend. High temperatures in Central Alabama will be around 86 or
87. We could see some more smoke and haze, at times, since prevailing
winds will be out of the SE. The humidity will continue lower than
normal, so those high temperatures will not be that uncomfortable.

AT THE BEACH: No telling how many people are headed that way and
the weather looks good all the way through the Memorial Day weekend.
There may be a small risk of a shower over the weekend, but almost
everybody will stay dry. High temperatures will vary from 82 to 86.
The sea surface temperature along the Alabama/NW Florida coast is in
the mid 70s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Unusually warm weather has reached the far
north. It was 91 in Boston this afternoon and they were getting some
visibility restrictions due to smoke and haze from the southern
wildfires…it was 90 yesterday in Ottawa and 88 in Montreal…even
Saranac Lake, New York will reach the upper 80s this afternoon. They
had 25 a few days ago…major flash flooding continues in the Plains…
dozens of flash flood warnings across South and Central Texas today.
Cotulla, Tex., 4.54 inches of rain overnight…Oklahoma City has
received almost twice as much rain as Birmingham this year…they are
over 7 inches above normal.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the second night in a row, we were
at a granddaughter's high school graduation last night at the Church
at Brook Hills. It was the Jefferson County International
Baccalaureate School. Congratulations to them again this year for
being the fourth best high school in the nation as reported in the
current issue of Newsweek. They were number one a couple of years
ago. We are proud of our Stephanie Broome. I feel sure her IQ is 10
times that of poor little me. Woe is me. I only had two sips of
coffee very early this morning before Little Miss Molly pounded away
on the little bell on the back door wanting to walk. It was sunrise.
I treasure my coffee and morning paper first thing when I get up, but
away we went. All of the birds were probably at DeSoto State Park or
Cheaha for the holiday. We did enjoy three fly-overs by two old
crows. The only other living creature we saw was a very young 1,000
legs (I guess we should call him 100 legs). He was curled up asleep.
Life goes on.....

...No Rain Through the Weekend...

In terms of astronomy, summer will begin at exactly 1:06 p.m. CDT on
June 21, when the sun will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer, and
we have our "longest day of the year" in terms of the amount of
daylight. In the world of meteorology, we consider the beginning of
summer on June 1. But, for most of you, the Memorial Day weekend marks
the time to celebrate the arrival of our warmest season. This year's
summer kickoff will feature more warm, dry weather for Alabama and the
Deep South.

HERE AT HOME: Mostly sunny warm days, and fair nights through Monday
with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. You will see a few fair
weather cumulus clouds around every afternoon, but we do not expect
any shower formation. The weather will remain excellent for the SEC
Baseball Tournament going on this weekend at Regions Park in Hoover.

AT THE BEACH: Same story. Lots of sunshine on a daily basis with no
significant chance of rain through Monday. Along the immediate coast,
the high will be between 79 and 82, and the sea water temperature from
Panama City westward to Gulf Shores remains generally in the upper
70s.

WE NEED RAIN: The National Forest Service issued an order this week
prohibiting the use of fire in Alabama's four national forests. The
order is effective immediately and extends through July 31. Almost all
of Alabama's water systems are asking customers to restrict the use of
water on a voluntary basis, and mandatory restrictions are likely
within a few weeks unless some significant rain returns to Alabama.
Today, Birmingham's rain deficit for the year will go over 14 inches
today. And, up in Huntsville, this is the driest start to a calendar
year on record; their total is only 10.52".

The rain deficiency for Huntsville since January 2005 is a whopping
47.53". Yep, we really need some rain on a widespread basis statewide.

We continue to see a trend toward a wetter pattern for Alabama during
the latter half of next week; we will bring in a chance of isolated
afternoon showers Tuesday, with scattered afternoon showers and storms
are little more likely by Wednesday. At this time it looks like the
best coverage of showers and storms will come on Thursday as an upper
air trough approaches the state from the west.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Big storms moved through Texas yesterday
producing strong winds and heavy rain; the total at the Dallas/Fort
International Airport was 1.10". Hail stones the size of quarters fell
in Dallas. The same system produced over one inch of rain in Tulsa, OK
and Omaha, NE. Coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday was Cora, Wyoming
with 15 degrees. That was one degree colder than Alaska's coldest
place, Wainwright, where the low was 16.

IN SEARCH OF A WEATHER CHANGE: And it does not look like much of a
change in the near future. But we jump down the road about a week
from now and mention some possibly encouraging news. By the middle of
next week, we believe we have a decent chance of showers and
thunderstorms. A better influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is
expected by that time. Probably our better chance of getting some
rain will be Wednesday or Thursday of next week. We will play it by
ear and watch it closely.

The quality of the air across the Birmingham area is much better
today. The air quality index was 99, which is moderate and next to
the best category which would be good. Brisk east and SE winds
cleared out much of yesterday's smoke, although some smoke was
reported this afternoon in Montgomery, Troy and Dothan.

Even though the showers late yesterday and last evening were illegal
(meaning we did not have them in the forecast), we were happy to get
them nevertheless. There was 0.43 of an inch of rain at the Clanton
Skycam, 0.36 in NE Trussville and 0.21 at Shelby County Airport. A
neighbor told me this morning that she would be very happy to get
illegal rain at any time.

MEMORIAL DAY: We look for dry weather to continue through the
Memorial Day weekend, including Monday. Afternoon highs should
average around 87 and lows at night in the mid 60s.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of gasoline will be used transporting numerous
folks to the beach since school is ending. Along the Alabama/NW
Florida coast, we expect dry and mostly sunny weather through Monday,
but a few showers and thunderstorms may show up about Tuesday. High
temperatures will be between 82 and 86. The sea surface temperature
at Dauphin Island at midday was 77.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: I want to take an imaginary trip to Browning,
Montana today. That town of some 1,200 people right up against the
eastern edge of Glacier National Park is famous in weather circles
for being the only place in the USA where the temperature dropped 100
degrees in only 24 hours. It happened on January 24, 1916. It was a
mild 44, but dropped to 56 below zero overnight. Something else going
on there now—a Heavy Snow Warning is posted for the area with 6 to 12
inches of heavy wet snow expected tonight and tomorrow…as much as
7.10 inches of rain in the last 24 hours at Hutchinson, Kansas.
Numerous flash flood problems in Eastern Kansas. Ft. Riley got 5.15
inches and Kansas State University 4.18…elsewhere around the world,
it was 23 in Big Piney, Wyoming this morning…it was 109 in New Delhi
at 6:00 p.m. today their time…sometimes a town's name can be
appropriate for the weather. It is interesting that Cold Foot, Alaska
(north of Fairbanks) had 75 below zero on January 26, 1989.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We were at the Alabama Theater last
night to see our granddaughter, Katelyn Elliott (Springville High
School) graduate. The Alabama Theater is absolutely awesome. We had
not been there in a long time. We were treated to a free 30-minute
concert beforehand on the famous Wurlitzer organ. I could have sat
there all night for that. We were gone a long time and Molly almost
tackled us when we got home. She got another long rub down, a big
ballgame and a late night walk. Someone once said that a dog is the
only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. Molly
fits the bill. I must admit that the love is mutual and growing by
the day. Life goes on.....

===================================================================

...Temperatures Back off Slightly...

A fresh easterly breeze will blow across Alabama today, helping to
create an improvement in air quality, and also knocking daytime
temperatures down a bit. Most of the smoke coming from the big
wildfire over South Georgia (the two big fires merged yesterday) will
blow due east into the southern half of Alabama. Air quality today
should be greatly improved over the northern counties of the state.
And, instead of a high in the upper 80s like recent days, we expect a
high today somewhere between 82 and 86; the cooler readings will be
over far East Alabama, near the Georgia border. Unfortunately, we
still do not expect any significant rain across Alabama today and
tomorrow.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Not much change in the weather for the Memorial Day
weekend; partly to mostly sunny days and fair nights will continue
through Monday with highs generally in the 80s and lows in the 60s. A
few isolated showers could actually show up Monday, but they will be
mainly over the southern half of the state, and the chance of any one
spot getting wet will remain rather tiny.

LONG RANGE: Some encouraging signs for the latter half of next week;
the GFS (the primary American global model) develops an upper trough
over the Southeast U.S., which will bring a pretty decent chance of
showers and thunderstorms to Alabama by June 1-2 (if the model is
correct!). Also, it continues to develop a tropical storm in the
Yucatan Channel, which ultimately moves toward Tampa Bay and then
northeast to Jacksonville.

AT THE BEACH: Generally dry weather continues through the weekend
along the Central Gulf coast, with mostly sunny days and fair nights.
Highs along the immediate coast will be at or just over 80 degrees,
and the sea water temperature is generally in the upper 70s from
Panama City westward to Gulf Shores. Any showers over the weekend will
be isolated.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain total for the year is still 10.28";
the deficiency for the year is 13.82". For May, our total is only
1.08". Birmingham has had measurable rain on only 10 of the last 69
days.

A FEW RAINDROPS: An easterly wave actually produced a few isolated
showers across parts of Alabama late yesterday and last night... our
Skywatcher in Jemison (just north of Clanton in Chilton County)
actually reported 0.30" from a passing shower. A large percentage of
Alabama remained dry, however. Alan Beck, our Skywatcher in Helena,
reports "dust and dehydrated bugs in the rain bucket".

AIR QUALITY: Birmingham's AQI (Air Quality Index) yesterday was 151,
which is in the unhealthy (or red) category. This was due to the large
amount of particulate pollution due to the smoke coming from the fires
in far South Georgia. Today the air quality is expected to improve,
and we have a "code yellow" forecast, meaning air quality is expected
to be moderate.

DROUGHT GRADUALLY WORSENS: There was a distinct pall of smoke
across much of Alabama early this morning, although easterly winds
were improving the visibility over the eastern counties. The smoke
was due mostly to distant forest fires, mainly in South Georgia and
Florida. There is a high risk of woodland fires over much of Alabama,
but for part of South Georgia and down the western side of the
Florida Panhandle, the risk of additional fires was rated as critical
today.

Here in Alabama, no relief in sight from the drought, which
continues to grow day by day. The Alabama Department of Agriculture
reported a few days ago that soil moisture was short or very short in
91% of the state and adequate in only 9%.

High temperatures yesterday were between 88 and 90 over most of the
state. Those high temperatures should back off a few degrees over the
next few days, but by Sunday the old thermometer may push 90 in parts
of the state. For the most part, it will be mostly sunshine all the
way through Sunday, although rather hazy at times. The smoke is not
expected to be as prevalent tomorrow as it was today. Many people
reported today that the smoke was rather thick and you could easily
smell it. Jefferson and Shelby Counties were placed under a Code Red
Alert for air quality today due to particle pollution instead of ozone.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Horrors! A moderate risk of severe weather is
posted by the Storm Prediction Center for part of the Texas and
Oklahoma Panhandle into Southern Kansas. This includes areas in or
near Greensburg. It would be one of the worst tragedies ever if that
destroyed town had to experience another powerful tornado in or near
the area. I am still very much impressed by the way Greensburg
residents responded to the tragedy. A typical example was the John
Deere dealer, whose business was destroyed, but he offered to give
all of his employees full salary if they did not leave town until he
could rebuild…Houston got another 1.27 inches of rain overnight in
contrast to Birmingham. They have a significant surplus…98 in Death
Valley was the Tuesday hotspot…20 in Ely, Nevada the cold spot for
this morning…Eastern Colorado is big hail country, including the
Denver area…a huge thunderstorm on May 23, 1991 dumped so much golf-
ball hail that it was 6 inches deep in suburban Aurora…5,000 homes
were damaged and 8,000 cars.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was out walking early today without
my little 9-pound pal, and the smell of smoke in the air was very
distinct. I do not remember it being that bad in a long, long time. I
even saw one man wearing a mask as he walked the track. I believe
Little Miss Molly got a record long belly rub just before bedtime
last night. She loves those and will stay completely still as long as
you rub. She lies on her back with her feet sticking straight up. The
only thing moving is a slow wagging of her tail. She looks me right
in the eye with those big eyes, which hypnotizes me. I think Molly
has put me into slavery, but I do not mind. Life goes on.

...No Rain Around Here...

This is a new day, but we have an old forecast. Warm and dry weather
is the story again today for Alabama; today will be our sixth
consecutive day without a drop of rain. The low level winds are now
out of the southeast, and that most likely will bring some smoke into
this part of Alabama, coming from wildfires still burning over South
Georgia and much of the Florida peninsula. The smoke and haze will
filter the sunshine, but we still expect afternoon temperatures in the
85 to 90 degree range over most of the state.

To the east, cooler air will be pushing westward through the Carolinas
and Georgia, and that wedge will reach extreme East Alabama tonight
and tomorrow. The cooling won't be all that noticeable, however; the
net result will be that afternoon highs will drop a few degrees
tomorrow and Friday. The cooler temperatures will be near the Georgia
border.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: The warm and dry weather will continue through
the holiday weekend, with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 80s and
early morning lows in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues to develop a tropical storm around the
Yucatan Channel around the middle of next week; it then moves the
system northeast across the Florida peninsula and into the Atlantic.
If this track happens to be correct, the bulk of the rain from the
tropical system will remain well to the south and east of Alabama. It
will, however, have the potential to bring beneficial rain to much of
Central and South Florida, which is also very dry. If a tropical storm
does form, the name will be Barry.

AT THE BEACH: No significant chance of rain for the Central Gulf coast
through the holiday weekend; afternoon highs along the immediate coast
will be in the 78 to 82 degree range, and the
sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 78 degrees.

NOAA HURRICANE OUTLOOK RELEASED: For the 2007 Atlantic hurricane
season, NOAA scientists predict 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to
10 becoming hurricanes, of which three to five could become major
hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. An average Atlantic
hurricane season brings 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes,
including two major hurricanes. Climate patterns responsible for the
expected above normal 2007 hurricane activity continue to be the
ongoing multi-decadal signal (the set of ocean and atmospheric
conditions that spawn increased Atlantic hurricane activity),
warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and
the El Niño/La Niña cycle.

CHEWING THE RAG: Alabama's hottest spot yesterday was Muscle Shoals
with 91 degrees. Out west, however, up to 18 inches of snow will occur
in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming and there will be numerous snow
showers, along with thunder and lightning, at Aspen, Colorado for the
next couple of days.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Maybe I should start off by saying that up to 18
inches of snow will occur in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming and
there will be numerous snow showers, along with thunder and
lightning, at Aspen, Colorado for the next couple of days. But back
home in Alabama, it is the same old story that we have repeated ad
nauseum. It is getting drier by the day and we do not see any relief
in sight. We now believe that a wedge coming in from the east might
not cool us off hardly at all, so we are keeping our high
temperatures in the mid 80s all the way through the weekend and
through Memorial Day. A cool front will push down into West Tennessee
on Monday and possibly to the Tennessee River by Tuesday morning
before it stalls. That could give the extreme northern part of
Alabama a small chance of showers. A Code Orange Ozone Alert was in
effect for Jefferson and Shelby Counties today.

Actually, we could see a bit of smoke in the air again as prevailing
SE winds bring some more up from South Georgia and North Florida.
This is especially true in East Alabama. In Atlanta today, visibility
has been as low as about one mile in thick smoke.

THREE DOT STUFF: Hope you do not mind me writing in chopped up
incomplete sentences. I can pack much more information into this
section. I love to write that way, 'tis the way I e-mail friends and
I never write complete sentences when I am doing radio broadcasts…
3.11 inches of rain overnight at Palacious, Texas and 2.50 at Lampass…
extensive flash flooding in Killeen with numerous roads closed,
downtown impassable and with many water rescues…Houston has received
23 inches of rain this year, a 6-inch excess…Denver got 73 inches of
snow this past winter…Evergreen, Colorado 138 inches…21 was the low
in Big Piney, Wyoming today and 12 in Deadhorse, Alaska…the National
Hurricane Center issued their new seasonal outlook today calling for
13 to 17 named storms, 7 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes…
normal is 11 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major.

AT THE BEACH: With school about over, bunches of folks will head
for the Alabama-NW Florida coast where generally dry weather is
expected all the way through the weekend with highs in the mid 80s
and mostly sunshine each day.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When I wrote the story about Roscoe
last week, a beloved dog belonging to Edsel and Joyce Freeman, we got
a lot of return comments. I forwarded them to the family. One comment
came from a neighbor who tells me that Roscoe was at his house every
day as they built their new home in 1998. People who worked on the
house, still ask the neighbor about Roscoe. He was truly a friend of
the community…Little Miss Molly did not get to see her new friend,
the baby Yorkie yesterday. He is still nursing a broken leg…on an
afternoon walk, we met two large dogs, including a very large black
dog that used my pants leg as a fireplug last time we met. So, I did
a little quick circumnavigation. Molly did not mind, in fact she is
nervous when they are around.

...The Long Dry Spell Continues...

I wish I had good news to report concerning Alabama's drought, but
quite frankly the chance of rain for the next seven days looks very
small for the entire state. Birmingham's rain total for the month of
May is only 1.08", and for the year the total is only 10.28". That
means a deficit of 13.51" for 2007, and that figure will only grow
larger in the coming days. We have seen measurable rain on only 10 of
the last 67 days, and many water systems are asking their customers to
cut back on water usage.

REST OF THE WEEK: Today will be another sunny and warm day, with the
high this afternoon ranging from 85 to 90 degrees (the best chance of
seeing 90 will be over on the western side of the state). We do expect
daytime temperatures to back off just a bit tomorrow and Thursday as a
wedge of cooler air tries to slip in here from the east. Communities
near the Georgia border will enjoy a high close to 80 degrees by
Thursday, with low 80s elsewhere. And, like most wedge situations this
time of the year, West Alabama really won't be affected all that much;
they will see highs in the mid to upper 80s through Friday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Time to kick off the summer season. If you are
headed to the Gulf coast for the holiday weekend, the weather will
remain dry with mostly sunny days and fair nights through Memorial
Day. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the low 80s, and the
sea water temperature should very close to 80 by the weekend. Pretty
much the same story for the Great Smoky Mountains; lots of sunshine on
a daily basis with afternoon highs up there in the 70s. And, if you
are staying home, the weekend will be dry with afternoon highs in the
mid to upper 80s.

NEXT WEEK: The primary American global computer model, the GFS, is
hinting at tropical storm formation in the far Southeast Gulf of
Mexico next week; it takes the system (IF it develops) to the
northeast, keeping the main rain shield to the east and south of
Alabama. We really won't be able to be very specific about this until
late this week, but it is something to watch. Most likely, our next
soaking rain event here in Alabama will come from some kind of
tropical system.

QUICK DROUGHT FACTS: Birmingham's rain total for the year is 10.28″...
The deficiency since January 1 is 13.35″... The rain total for May is
only 1.08″... Birmingham has seen measurable rain on only three days
in May... We have seen measurable rain on only 10 out of the last 67
days.

ROAMING NEAR AND FAR: Hottest place in Alabama yesterday was Dothan
with 91 degrees. Lots of rain yesterday down in Key West, Florida;
their total was 1.21". The coldest spot in the continental U.S. was
Doe Lake, Michigan with 25 degrees. In Alaska, both Barrow and
Deadhorse dropped to 19 degrees.

THE ALABAMA STORY is a continued one of dry weather as the state
becomes thirstier and thirstier. The NW half of the state continues
to be in a severe drought area, but the entire state is dry. Looks
like little or no chance of rain for the entire week. One of the
models hints at a few showers late Wednesday or Thursday, but mostly
over the south part of the state. We do not look for any rain here in
Central Alabama. You have heard us mention the wedge effect numerous
times. Another high-pressure system will be building down the east
coast and sending some slightly cooler air westward into Alabama by
Wednesday or Thursday. On Thursday the high temperature in the
easternmost counties, and especially on Mt. Cheaha, could be in the
70 to 80-degree range.

There were still a few cool spots around the state this morning,
including 41 in DeSoto State Park and 43 at Ft. Payne Airport. We are
calling for an average low of 55 tonight, but some of the NE valleys
may have upper 40s.

HURRICANE SEASON: The official beginning is only 11 days away. We
have already had Andrea, which was called subtropical, that fizzled
off the east coast of Florida. The next five names will be Barry,
Chantal, Dean, Erin and Felix.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Numerous weather stations across the USA send
out a daily climate report, which includes how much precipitation so
far this year, whether the temperatures have been above or below
normal and sunrise/sunset…the report from Barrow, Alaska today said
time of sunrise "none" and time of sunset "none"…this means, of
course, that they are in that long stretch of around-the-clock
daylight…Barrow has 69 days of total darkness and 84 days of total
daylight each year…25 at Doe Lake, Michigan was the coldest in the
lower 48…19 at Barrow and Deadhorse—the honor for Alaska…Barrow still
has 9 inches of snow on the ground and Whittier 13 inches…summer is
gradually coming on…elevation plays an important part in weather, but
some states are so flat it does not make much difference…in
Louisiana, the highest point is Driskill Mountain SW of Grambling at
535 feet…that is lower than downtown Birmingham…in Florida, they do
not even call it a mountain…the high point is Britton Hill at only
345 feet just south of the Alabama border…of course, the high point
in Alabama is Mt. Cheaha at 2,407 feet and that does make a difference.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: So sorry to report that the new friend
of Little Miss Molly, the young Yorkie, has a broken leg…he broke it
by jumping off the bed…he and Molly have become fast friends. When we
walk up the track behind his house, we often see his tiny face in the
bottom windowpane in the back door looking for Molly. His owner says
he starts crying as soon as Molly walks by. Molly plops down in the
edge of his yard crying for him. His owner will often bring him
across the yard and up the slope, so they can rub noses and see each
other for a few moments, although she has to hold the Yorkie. Molly
has other close friends along the walking track, such as Bridgett,
Mattie and Jo-Jo. Each one requires a stop and a wait to see if they
are available for a puppy version of over-the-fence chit-chat or
doggie gossip. It is a pleasure to watch them interact with each
other. The more I am around Molly, the more she seems like being semi-
human. Life goes on and our little ones, in my opinion, make life
much more interesting and enjoyable. One thing for sure—those little
doggies are excellent ego busters.

...No Major Rain in Sight...

I know that you are tired of hearing us harp on the lack of rainfall
in Alabama. But it is a serious situation, and one that we need to
turn around soon. Someone commented on the blog yesterday that they
were ready for the tropical season to get started. I am certain that
their thinking was that we might scare up a good old-fashioned soaker
of a tropical storm out of the Gulf of Mexico and bust the drought.
Nothing like that is on the horizon, although the Gulf and Caribbean
do show signs of being nervous in the next two weeks according to the
GFS model.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure is centered over the Smoky Mountains of
Tennessee and North Carolina this morning. It will keep us dry and
warm over the next two days. Another high over Hudson Bay in Canada
will be our next player on the Alabama weather scene. As it moves
southeastward, it will set up shop along the Atlantic Coast. This
will allow another back door cold front to push towards Alabama from
the northeast. It should arrive on Wednesday. It will be heralded by
an increasing easterly wind, increased clouds and a little Atlantic
moisture that may shake out a few showers, although they will be
limited. This will dictate our weather through Friday. Temperatures
will rise into the middle 80s today and tomorrow, then fall back just
a bit for the rest of the week.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND BEYOND: By Friday night, strengthening low
pressure over the Plains will be bringing severe weather. It will
move into Michigan on Saturday. It looks like we stay dry on
Saturday, but a few showers could show up by Saturday night. Showers
and storm chances will increase slowly on Sunday as the front edges
closer, but the main activity may hold off until Monday, Memorial Day.

RIP CURRENT SAFETY: It is official. James has posted his Best Way
to the Bama Beaches feature. So now we need to talk rip current
safety. Each year, fun seeking Alabamians flock to the Gulf coast to
enjoy sun, sand and surf. But Gulf waves can pack a wallop and each
year, unsuspecting bathers get caught in rough surf or undertows and
drown. These unnecessary deaths can be prevented. Read NOAA's rip
current safety rules in our Weather Blog.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: The tiny island of Tristan da Cunha is regarded
to be the most remote inhabited island on earth. It is located in the
South Atlantic Ocean, 1000 miles from South Africa and 1000 miles from
South America. A territory of the United Kingdom, the volcanic island
is only 38 square miles. Much of the island was destroyed by a very
strong non-tropical cyclone on this date. The storm struck with winds
of 120 mph, damaging or destroying nearly every building on the
island. Reportedly, all 300 residents suffered property damage.

...Dry Weather Continues...

Each weekend, I watch the rainfall deficit in Birmingham grow. Now,
it stands at over 13 inches. And not much rainfall is in sight for
the immediate future. Huntsville's deficit is over 14 inches, Muscle
Shoals over 13, Tuscaloosa over 16 and Mobile over 13.

DROUGHT UPDATE: The northwest half of Alabama continues in an Extreme
Drought condition according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. All of
Alabama except for the Wiregrass area of Southeast Alabama is
considered to be in a drought, and even that area is listed as
abnormally dry. Experts do expect some relief in the drought
conditions during the summer season, which is encouraging.

PROSPECTS FOR RAINFALL: Let's look and see if we can spot any wet
trends in the medium and long range…the prospects for rainfall in the
7 day period are slim. We might see a few showers late on Wednesday,
but the chance is small and should be limited to eastern sections. As
we head into the longer range, we see a couple of chances for rain
events in the 7 to 14 day period, including the possibility of a
tropical system?

OUR FORECAST: Clear and comfortable for the next couple of nights,
followed by days with lots of sunshine and gradually warming
temperatures. By Wednesday, a backdoor cold front will be approaching
Alabama from the east, and there could be a few light showers as it
arrives, mainly late Wednesday. We will notice the typical increasing
east breeze, but things should die down as we heaed into Thursday. It
then looks dry through Saturday with a few light showers possible on
Sunday.

TROPICAL TROUBLE (OR GODSEND?) Last night's GFS out at 204 hours
(early Monday the 28th) showed a tropical low moving toward the
Yucatan Channel. By Tuesday the 29th, it would be moving into the
southeastern Gulf. It makes landfall on the Southwest Florida coast
on Wednesday and then moves up the Peninsula on Thursday bringing some
beneficial, fire snuffing rains to North and Central Florida. The low
then rotates up into Alabama on Friday, bringing more soaking rains to
eastern sections of the state over into Georgia. Voodoo land for
sure, but we can hope. The morning GFS develops it much slower and
moves it into the southwestern Gulf as a weak low before moving it
north toward the Texas/Louisiana coast before the Memorial Day
weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1883: The tiny Indonesian Island of Krakatau was
shook by a series of loud explosions that signaled that the
long-dormant volcano on the uninhabited island was active once again.
Residents on the neighboring islands of Sumatra and Java were not
really concerned as the island's rumblings grew in intensity over the
next few months. On August 27th, the major eruption sent a cloud of
burning ash toward the island of Sumatra, where many residents were
burned to death. But the major disaster resulted when tsunamis
triggered by the massive blast emanated outward from Krakatau. Waves
up to 130 feet high swept the islands of Java and Sumatra. All in
all, 36,000 people were killed by the eruptions and resultant
tsunamis.
