...Rain Moving Out...

The rain has been sparse with our cold front on this Saturday morning. The first showers moved through early, barely wetting the ground. A line of weak convection is oriented along the cold front, which is moving quickly out of Alabama. Behind the front, strong northwesterly winds are ushering in much cooler air. Temperatures in the northwest part of the state have fallen back into the forties this morning and into the fifties across the rest of the area. Windy and cloudy conditions will prevail through the afternoon hours. Conditions will be dicey on areas lakes, so if you are a hardy boater, use extreme precaution.

THROUGH TUESDAY: Clouds will hang tough overnight, although I think they will clear by morning. Temperatures overnight will drop into the middle and upper 30s. Tomorrow and Monday will be nice days, with mostly sunny skies and readings in the lower and middle 60s for daytime highs. It will be chilly again Monday morning, with lows in the 30s once again. By Tuesday, skies will still be sunny with highs in the upper 60s. Clouds will thicken late in the day into the overnight with a slight chance of a shower toward daybreak. This will be due to a warm front moving northward in response to cyclogenesis to the west of Alabama. The intensifying low pressure system will be near Cape Girardeau, Missouri by dawn on Wednesday, setting the stage for a potential active weather day on…

WEDNESDAY: An area of showers and storms will be pushing into West Alabama during the morning hours. Depending on timing of the day, and available instability, the system could be on the potent side with lots of wind shear. So we will ask you to keep an eye on the forecasts for that day and the possibility of severe weather

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND: Wrap around clouds hang in through Thursday, with a little light rain and cooler temperatures. High pressure builds in for Friday and the weekend with nice conditions expected.

ON THIS DATE IN 1911: One of the most powerful "blue northers" in American history was sweeping south across the Plains. The temperature contrasts across the front were incredible. Kansas City, Missouri recorded a temperature of 68 degrees while less than four hundred miles away, the temperature at North Platte, Nebraska, was only 4 degrees above zero at the same time. Kansas city recorded a high temperature for the day of 76 by late morning, but the temperature then began to drop and it was snowing by early afternoon. By midnight the temperature was 11 above zero. Oklahoma City recorded a record high (83) and a record low (17) on the same day. At Independence, Kansas the temperature dropped from 83 to 33 degrees in one hour! An F4 tornado killed 9 and injured 50 in Janesville, Wisconsin. An hour after the tornado, survivors were digging through the rubble in zero degree temperatures and blizzard conditions.

...Much Cooler Today...

Greetings from Amtrak train number 20, The Crescent, rolling northward through Virginia heading toward Washington, D.C. and eventually New York City later today for me as I attend the American Hotel and Lodging Association meeting and International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant show. It is going to be a fun four days in the Big Apple. And a couple of great train rides to boot.

BIG CHANGE UNDERWAY: A beautiful fall day across North and Central Alabama yesterday, with a good deal of sunshine and temperatures well into the 70s. Pinson actually hit 80 degrees, as did Evergreen and Mobile. A cold front is pushing across Alabama this morning. It brought a line of showers and storms to the state overnight. Those storms were severe at times to our west, but fortunately they ran out of gas before they reached Alabama. Precipitation will be ending from west to east across the area through early afternoon with northwesterly winds and cloudiness holding back the mercury to around 60. Skies will clear tonight and temperatures will drop into the middle 30s for the most part.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Tomorrow looks good with plenty of sunshine and highs in the lower 60s. Back into the middle 30s under mostly clear skies Sunday night. Monday starts off sunny, but clouds will thicken late in the day and we could see a shower before daybreak with an approaching warm front. Intensifying low pressure to our northwest will lead to chance of severe weather on Wednesday ahead of a cold front. Expect a change to colder after than, with high pressure in charge until the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Georgia will be at Auburn for an 11:30 kickoff Saturday. Around 68 at kickoff and remaining in the 60s with a chance of showers. For the Alabama-LSU game in Baton Rouge Saturday night, fair and dry weather is expected with about 64 degrees at kickoff, but dropping to near 50 by the end of the game.

STORM ALERT XTREME: I am excited about my trip to New York City, but bummed that it is falling on the date for Storm Alert Xtreme. Today is the day. Be at the BJCC. It starts at 9:30 and goes until 3:00 pm. Two sessions of storm spotter training, including an advanced session in the afternoon. By coming to that, you can also be admitted free to the International Auto Show. The weather people will be in meeting room A. Get there early.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: The ”Armistice Day Blizzard” is one of the most powerful blizzards on record. The monstrous killed 154 people across the Great Lakes area and the Upper Midwest. Forty nine people died in Minnesota. Shipwrecks on Lake Michigan claimed sixty nine lives. Seventreen inches of snow fell in parts of Iowa and the barometer dropped to 28.66 inches at Duluth, Minnesota. Subzero temperatures and gale force winds made the blizzard one of the most destructive in Iowa history.

CHANCE OF SHOWERS BY DAYBREAK: We don't expect an all-day rain
Saturday, but showers may reach Central Alabama by daybreak. They
should continue off and on through most of the morning and possibly
into the early afternoon. There could also be a few thunderstorms.
This will not be a heavy rain event like we have become accustomed to
lately.

It will be a lot cooler Saturday as compared to today. The wind will
be shifting around to the NW early in the morning with speeds during
the day of 10 to 20 mph. Highs will do good to reach the lower 60s. It
should be clearing late in the day. This will permit Saturday night
temperatures to fall into the mid 30s. Sunday should be all sunshine.
Clouds will increase late Monday with some more showers late in the
day or Monday night. Tuesday will bring our best chance of rain and
possibly some fairly strong thunderstorms. This goes to show you what
the weather can be like in November.

We are also in the midst of our secondary severe weather season. Four
years ago today two long track tornadoes struck in West Alabama. One
stayed on the ground for 44 miles and struck Carbon Hill in NW Walker
County destroying the school. The other one was 73 miles long with a
path parallel to the first one. Some of the towns hit were Carbon
Hill, Curry and Saragosa. There was a total of 12 fatalities that day.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school playoff games tonight and also for
the UAB-UTEP game at Legion Field, it should be fair with about 72 at
kickoff and falling into the 60s. Georgia will be at Auburn for an
11:30 kickoff Saturday. Around 68 at kickoff and remaining in the 60s
with a slight chance of showers. For the Alabama-LSU game in Baton
Rouge Saturday night, fair dry weather is expected with about 64
degrees at kickoff, but dropping to near 50 by the end of the game.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget—tomorrow is the day. Be at the

spotter training, including an advanced session in the afternoon. By
coming to that, you can also be admitted free to the International
Auto Show. The weather people will be in meeting room A. If you can,
get there at 8:30 for some friendly get-acquainted chats. I hope to be
there also.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I got so mesmerized by the
Louisville-Rutgers football game last night that Little Miss Molly
gave up getting any playtime. She curled up on my National Geographic
blanket and slept through most of the game. But in the 4th quarter she
erupted into a vicious frenzy running through the house. It seems that
she just has to blow off the energy. A very pleasant walk today.
Nature is so pretty at this time. There has just got to be some way we
can alter the axis of the earth to where it is autumn in Alabama for
at least 6 months of the year. Nice part about this time of year, my
second favorite season follows immediately, and that is winter. Don't
think Molly ever looks at the calendar. Every day for her is eat,
sleep and play. This morning, she seized my recliner and slept for
nearly 6 hours. Life goes on....

COOL TONIGHT, BUT MILD THURSDAY: Clouds hung tough for much of
today, but early this afternoon it had cleared in all areas except
extreme East Alabama. Look for clear cool weather tonight and mostly
sunshine for Thursday. The old thermometer will get a jump start early
tomorrow morning after a low tonight near 47. Both Thursday and Friday
should be very warm for November with Friday being our warmest day. We
are calling for an average high across Central Alabama of 79 Friday.
We may have to raise that a bit later. Don't be surprised to hear of
some 82-degree highs in West Alabama in places like Tuscaloosa and
Livingston.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Sometimes I think weather models flip a coin before
their final output. Two of our models call for some showers on
Saturday with one of them indicating a possibility all day. The other
model limits showers mostly to Saturday morning and that is the way we
are leaning. A cold front will be entering NW Alabama early Saturday
and moving quickly through the state. Highs on Saturday will only be
in the 60s. Sunday look for more sunshine. Further down the road,
showers return early next week.

HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED: Way back on November 8, 1870, the U.S.
Signal Corps Weather Service (forerunner to the U.S. Weather Bureau
and National Weather Service) issued the first storm warning. It was
for the Great Lakes.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A nice surge of very warm air pushing
northward from Texas into the Plains. Don't be surprised to hear of
highs in the low 90s for SW Texas this afternoon…our eyes are also
focused on the far north where it is still quite cold. The cold air is
building up over Eastern Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada. It
was 30 below this morning at Chisana, Alaska. The wind chill was 40
below at Eagle. Over in Greenland, it was a bitter 69 below at Summit
on the ice cap. It is not even winter yet…coldest temperatures in the
lower 48 this morning included 14 at Doyleville and 18 at Gunnison…if
you ever get a chance, visit Gunnison one of these days and continue
down the Gunnison Valley parallel to the river through Montrose, Delta
and to Grand Junction. It is beautiful.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I think we have pooped out Little Miss
Molly from playing so much the last two days. Amazingly, she crawled
out of bed this morning, moaned and groaned and stretched, had some
water and food, had a brief outdoor bathroom break, came back in and
jumped back up on the bed and went sound asleep. She slept most of the
morning. When we did finally take a walk, she was very assertive and
made me go the full half mile. This was one morning we did not see
anything unusual. We did hear about three old crows cawing. That is
always good music to wake up to. Pest control person came by. Miss
Molly thought she was supposed to greet them at the door. When he
left, she pressed her nose against the bottom of the door to see what
he smelled like. She is the nosiest busybody you ever saw. We did a
lot of loving on the couch last night as we watched election returns.
One day Molly will run for office in the doggie world. But life goes
on. I'm afraid I could not do without her.....

Prestige Alarm specializes in monitoring security systems

In a typical system, if your phone line is cut or fails,

Since we do not use phone lines, we can still dispatch the

NEAR RECORD WARMTH FOR Friday: If the temperature reaches our
forecast high of 80 in Birmingham tomorrow, it will be within 1 degree
of our record high of 81 in 1915. On November 11, we had 84 in 1896.
The warmth will not last long. We expect a quick-moving cold front to
come through Central Alabama Saturday morning, keeping the Saturday
highs in the 60s and dropping lows Saturday night and early Sunday
morning to near 39.

NOW ABOUT THE QUICK CHANGES: Clouds will move in Friday night. Some
showers will reach our area at some point between midnight and
daybreak Saturday and persist in the area through much of the morning.
The weather will clear late Saturday. Sunday should be all sunshine.
Then on Monday, clouds will increase with some showers starting Monday
afternoon and continuing Monday night. It looks like an even stronger
stormy event for Central Alabama the first part of next week. At this
time, we believe some better chance of some strong storms will be
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. That could change after some of
the weather models have a powwow and reach a consensus.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UTEP (University of Texas-El Paso) will be at
Legion Field Friday night to play UAB. The weather should be fair and
dry with temperatures falling through the 60s. Georgia will be at
Auburn for an 11:30 kickoff Saturday. There will be a slight chance of
a shower or thunderstorm. Temperatures should peak around 72 and then
drop into the 60s during the game. Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to
play LSU Saturday night. They will have thunderstorms Saturday, mostly
during the morning. It should be fair and dry Saturday night with
temperatures in the 60s at kickoff and the 50s by the end of the game.

THE VERY INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: 6 to 12 inches of snow
expected today over the north and west mountains of Wyoming including
4 to 8 inches in Yellowstone National Park…a hot 93 at Wink, Texas
yesterday…it was 15 this morning at Doyleville, Colo…it was 31 below
zero at Dawson in the Yukon…the surplus in rainfall for Houston this
year now stands at 14 inches…in the Big Apple (occasionally called New
York City), the excess is almost 12 inches. In Central Park they
recorded 54.30 inches this year, which is 2 inches more than
Birmingham.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is good with puppy
psychology. She knows me like the back of her paw. She takes advantage
of me and manipulates me. She has learned to play a one-person (er,
one-dog) ballgame when I am busy. This morning it sounded like the
World Series in our living area and she was running at breakneck speed
and tossing balls in all directions. It sounded like a shark on a
feeding frenzy. I didn't dare go in there, because she would have
forced me into a long game…oh, for the sights and sounds of autumn. On
our walk this morning, we noticed the 2 Bradford pears in Molly's
backyard now a deep rust color. Further up the track, we walked
through a canopy of large leaves that had fallen off the sassafras
tree…the thick hedgerow along the track will thin out some and Molly
will always stop and try to get a glimpse of Jo-Jo who lives on the
other side. She always stops, hoping to see him. She also stops at 3
other homes up the track where her human friends live. Life goes
on.....

STILL A RISK OF SOME SHOWERS TONIGHT: That includes the possibility
of a thunderstorm. Even though the widespread steady rain has moved
out of the state, we still have a pool of cold air aloft that will
affect our area tonight. This could set off some scattered showers and
possibly a thunderstorm. Under conditions like that, it is not unusual
to have some hail. It does not look like the showers will be
widespread. By morning, there may be some fog forming also as our
ground level moisture is extremely high. After a few lingering showers
early tomorrow, some sunshine should show up by afternoon. Thursday
and Friday should be mostly sunshine and quite mild for November. By
Saturday, another cold front will be approaching from the NW. it
should set off some scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm. Early
indications are that Sunday should be dry. Here is a list of some of
the heavier rainfall amounts overnight:

3.37 inches at Mobile Regional Airport
3.65 in Winfield
2.43 at Tuscaloosa Airport
3.46 in Haleyville
2.56 at Jasper
3.35 in Fayette

Numerous other parts of the state had well over 1 inch of rain. Some
strong winds developed late last night—an outflow from so much
rain-cooled air. There was a report of a barn unroofed at Hamilton.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Major, major problems in the Seattle area and
much of the Pacific Northwest. 4.39 inches of rain overnight at
Olympia and 7.86 inches on Stampede Pass. A number of rivers will rise
to an all-time crest. The governor has declared a state of emergency
in 18 Washington counties. Besides all that, 25-foot swells were
expected along the coast…cold temperatures this morning, 21 at Presque
Isle, Maine, 26 below at Gulkana, Alaska, and 35 below at Dawson in
the Yukon Territory.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I kept my little girl up so late last
night playing ballgames with her. She got so excited that when we
finally said nite-nite time after midnight, she ran and hid. She
wanted to play even more. Got her out of bed early this morning and
she was still so tired that she headed for her blanket after spending
some time taking a bath. I can't do everything that Molly does. For
example, I can't bend over far enough to lick my paws. The walks that
she forces me to take are so enjoyable and it makes me notice some
tiny abstracts of nature. One of those not long ago (befroe it turned
cold) was two earthworms traveling in two opposite directions on the
walking track. When they met, they paused and looked at each other.
One turned around and went in the same direction of the other one.
Maybe that led to an earthworm wedding. Life goes on even in the tiny,
tiny realms of nature. All the little creatures of the world have
problems like us grownups, but life goes on......

...A Wet Election Day For the Deep South...

We will begin this day with a soaking rain across Alabama as a strong upper
air system moves overhead. Additional rainfall amounts of one inch are a
good bet today; the storm total could be close to two inches for some
communities. We don't expect enough rain for any serious flooding issues
today, and severe weather isn't likely since the air in this part of the
state should be cool and stable. Any strong storms should be confined to the
southern third of the state.

The rain will begin to taper off from west to east this afternoon, but the
upper air low won't be in a big hurry to leave the region, so we will
continue to mention the chance of a few stray showers tonight and tomorrow
morning. By the afternoon hours tomorrow, any showers should be confined to
the far eastern side of Alabama. Temperatures won't change all that much
today and tomorrow because of the clouds and rain; highs will be mostly in
the low to mid 60s.

WARMER AND BRIGHTER: Thursday and Friday look very nice, with a good supply
of sunshine and unseasonably mild temperatures for November. We expect mid
70s on Thursday, and upper 70s by Friday. Some West Alabama communities will
flirt with the 80 degree mark Friday, near record levels for this time of
the year.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now, it looks like Saturday will be dry and mild, but we
will bring in a chance of showers Saturday night and Sunday as a slow moving
cold front approaches. At this time we don't expect any severe weather over
the weekend, but some thunder is not out of the question.

LONG RANGE: More questions that answers as we look out in the 7 to 15 day
time frame; but there remains a potential for a major storm to form over the
central part of the U.S. early next week (a week from now), which might have
the potential to bring some risk of strong to severe storms to parts of the
Deep South in the November 14-15 time frame. Keep in mind we are now in the
fall tornado season, so active weather this time of the year is quite the
norm.

STORM ALERT XTREME: If you want to learn more about severe weather, and
become a volunteer storm spotter, then you need to be at the BJCC for our
annual Storm Alert XTREME. We begin at the BJCC at 9:30 Saturday morning;
Brian Peters will teach both the basic and the advanced SKYWARN sessions,
and I will do a program on the all new ABC 33/40 Skywatcher program; these
are volunteers who report back to us in real time using Instant Message
technology. There is no cost, and our friends at the Birmingham Automobile
Dealers Association are also going to let everyone that attends Storm Alert
XTREME have free admission to the 2007 Alabama Inernational Auto Show, going
on this weekend at the BJCC! We will see you Saturday.

RAIN BECOMING WIDESPREAD TONIGHT: Here we go with another wet
weather event. We have had a number of these lately. Showers were
already numerous and widespread across Louisiana and Mississippi this
afternoon. This is a slow-moving storm system, so it will have time to
give most Alabama communities considerable rain. There should be a
good average of 1 to 2 inches across much of the state and some
communities could receive in excess of 2 inches.

Most of our rain will come tonight and Tuesday, although it may
decrease Tuesday afternoon. There could even be a few leftover showers
Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. After that, look for milder
and dry weather Thursday, Friday and most of Saturday. Temperatures
will bounce back to the 70s Thursday and over the weekend. Some
communities may reach 80 Friday afternoon since we are expecting a
good amount of sunshine.

ELECTION DAY WEATHER: Wet in most areas, but that is no excuse to
not get out to vote. Rain should be rather widespread across the state
with some locally heavy amounts.

SNOW THIS WINTER? Don't know, of course, but good friend Joe Aloia,
tells me his squirrels are not only in a hurry to store nuts, but they
are throwing them at him. If that name sounds familiar, Joe was with
the old WSGN radio (remember 20/20 News?).

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Did you know that it had snowed in Miami? It
happened on January 19, 1977 for the first time ever. Not just a few
hard-to-see flakes, instead it was a brief dusting…temperatures today
at Dawson in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada hanging out around 30
below zero. That is one of the main stations we watch for Arctic air
buildup during the winter…another heavy rain event for the Pacific NW.
They don't need a drop. As much as 12 inches of rain may fall from
this storm in the Cascade Mountains in Western Washington State…19 at
Gunnison, Colorado was one of the coldest spots in the lower 48 states
this morning…I had promised myself I would take a drive up the Paint
Rock Valley in extreme North Alabama to see autumn foliage this year.
It is one of my favorite drives. I am not going to make it, but check
out the excellent photos by Tom Randel on our blog.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is really funny to watch Molly when
she is out walking every day. It amazes me that she can go along at
full speed with her little nostrils only 2 inches off of the ground
and her tail wagging like the rotor blade on a helicopter. I wish I
could get down and crawl that fast and see what I could smell. But I
read a story about that today. Inside a dog's nose are membranes that
are so sensitive to odor that a dog can smell at least 1,000 times
better than a human…our recent cold weather definitely means no more
mosquitoes. The only confirmed sighting that I had this summer was in
my office. It flew across between my face and computer screen. I swung
so widely at it with a TIME magazine that I tore off the cover. Don't
know what happened to the little rascal…Molly got lots of playtime
yesterday and last night. She was overjoyed. Life goes on.....

...Some Afternoon Clearing Today...

While we begin the day with low clouds and some drizzle, we expect a gradual
improvement in the weather across Alabama today as the big upper low pulls
away from us. We should begin to see some clearing this afternoon; the sun
should break through first on the western side of the state, but communities
near the Georgia border could remain overcast all day. All of Alabama should
be clear by tonight, and the stage is set for some really nice weather
tomorrow and Friday as a big warming trend begins. With a good supply of
sunshine, we expect mid 70s tomorrow, and upper 70s by Friday. Some spots in
West Alabama might even touch 80 on Friday, not far from record levels for
early November in Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: A significant storm system will form west of Alabama on Friday,
and might set the stage for a severe thunderstorm threat from the eastern
part of Texas into parts of the midwest. Those showers and storms should
move into our state late Friday night, mainly after midnight, continuing
into the day Saturday. The latest model data suggests the best chance of
rain will come from about midnight Friday night through 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
The best dynamic forcing will stay north of Alabama, and with marginal
instability values we don't expect a big severe weather problem here in
Alabama at this point. Then, drier air returns Saturday night into Sunday
with comfortable temperatures. The high on Sunday should be close to 70
degrees.

NEXT WEEK: A very difficult forecast due to computer model inconsistencies
and the progressive pattern, but right now it looks like we will begin the
week with a good chance of showers and strong storms on Monday. Beyond
Monday, there are two schools of thought. One concept is that the front
stalls out, prolonging the rain into mid-week and possibly setting up a
flash flood threat. The other idea, one showing up more and more on recent
computer model runs, shows a very deep upper trough forming over the eastern
U.S. next week, which could drive the coldest air so far this season all the
way down to the Gulf of Mexico. If this happens to be correct, the weather
will be quite cold one week from now. We will wait for more clarity before
making a final call... looks like a very interesting week one way or
another.

ROAMING: Serious flooding continues across parts of Washington and Oregon;
at least one death is blamed on the heavy rain, and there have been many
evacuations and road closures. Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Woodland Hills, CA with 101. The ABC 33/40 Online Weather Watcher (Todd
Foisy) in Girdwood, Alaska (near Anchorage) reported a high of 19 (F)
degrees yesterday following a morning low of 10. The snow depth there is two
inches, and Todd reports that even with full sunshine, temperaturess are
cold enough and the sun angle weak enough to where only about 1/8'' of snow
is melting per day.

Here in Alabama, one of the heaviest rain totals from Monday and yesterday
was 3.64", recorded in south Fayette County.
