...Perfect!...

I don't think that you can have a more perfect start to the day here
in Alabama. Clear skies. Calm winds. Temperatures in the 50s (and
a few 40s. Couldn't be better. Today will be another outstanding
day, with sunny skies, mild temperatures and low humidities.

YOUR FORECAST: High pressure is centered over western Pennsylvania
on this Sunday morning. A strong ridge of high pressure extends
southwestward all the way back into the Arklamiss region to our
west. This high pressure will keep us in fine conditions today and
Monday. A passing upper level disturbance to our north today may
trigger a few clouds during the middle of the day, but nothing in the
way of rain. With time, the high will shift eastward. As it does,
high pressure will spill down the East Coast and around the backside
of the Appalachian Mountains. This is the familiar easterly wedge.
We dread them in the winter. In late summer like now, their main
effect is to provide increased Atlantic moisture, more clouds and
slightly cooler temperatures. We could see spotty showers,
especially late in the week, but the general thought is that we will
be mostly dry and warm until then. An upper low is expected to form
off the Southeast Coast late in the week. It will likely move
westward into the Gulf of Mexico. This could be a player if we see…

TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT: The Saturday morning run of the GFS paints the
picture of a developing tropical depression in the northwestern
Caribbean by Thursday. This depression strengthens as it moves north
northwestward into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. NO consistent
solution has developed over the past few model runs, so our
confidence is low. But suffice to say, the western Caribbean and Gulf
will be places to watch in the week ahead. Ingrid was ripped apart
by wind shear on Saturday and relegated to tropical depression status
in the Atlantic well east of the Leeward Islands. It will remain to
be seen if it lives long enough to re-intensify when the shear
relaxes in about 2 days. A tropical wave between Africa and the
Lesser Antilles has the potential to develop into a depression over
the next couple of days. There is also a disturbed weather area
north of Hispaniola.

IVAN: By some estimations, it was the stormiest day in Alabama
history. Not in terms of tornadoes, or fatalities. But in terms of
just pure storminess, it is the wildest weather day in my lifetime.
Hurricane Ivan made landfall near Gulf Shores around 1:50 a.m. on
this date back in 2004. As the hurricane approached the northern
Gulf Coast, a strong upper level trough produced a tremendous amount
of shear that began to impinge on the hurricane in the final hours
before landfall. The hurricane weakened only slowly in the last few
hours, and was still a formidable category three storm at landfall
with top winds of 125 mph. Ivan had a huge eye when it came ashore –
nearly fifty miles wide. This pushed the region of maximum winds
east to near the Florida/Alabama border. Ivan remained a major
hurricane (category three or higher) for nine days before it made
landfall, an all time record in the Atlantic. It moved northward
during the day, spreading heavy rainbands ahead of the center.
Strong winds continued for hours across Central Alabama with constant
torrential rains. 9.84 inches of rain fell at the Birmingham
Airport, the greatest one day total in the city's history. Winds
gusted to 42 mph at BHM. Ivan's life history in today's weather
history posting on alabamawx.com.

...Open the Windows...

Tonight will be one of those nights that we have longed for in all of
the heat and drought of this long, hot summer here in Alabama. A
significant cool front knifed through much of the state last night on
its way to a rendezvous with the Gulf Coast. Behind the front, much
drier and refreshingly cool air has spread into Alabama. With calm
winds and good conditions for radiational cooling, the mercury will
take full advantage of the opportunity overnight to drop into the 50s
with a few 40s in normally colder locations. Enjoy!
LOOKING AHEAD: Sunday looks like a carbon copy of today, except
winds will relax and shift around to the east. This easterly wind
will allow our moisture levels to come up slowly. That will keep
lows Monday morning near 60. An easterly wedge will gradually set up
Monday and Tuesday, pulling Atlantic air into our region, giving us a
mix of clouds and sun. The GFS is less bullish on shower chances for
the second half of the week, so the prospects look dry through much
of the week. The morning GFS run pops up a tropical storm in the
Caribbean that moves up into the eastern Gulf, making landfall north
of Tampa.
FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn is playing Mississippi State on the Plains
where skies are clear and temperatures are in the middle 80s. .
Alabama takes on Arkansas in a 5:45 contest at the Capstone. Clear
and comfortable conditions with game time temperatures falling from
the 80s into the upper 60s by game's end. UAB entertains Alcorn
State in an evening tilt at Birmingham's Legion Field. Expect
similar conditions to T-town with fair skies, fall feeling temps and
a dying breeze.
WHERE'S INGRID: Ingrid was downgraded to a tropical depression. It
is located about 550 miles ENE of the Lesser Antilles. It is no
threat to the islands. It is in a very hostile environment with lost
of shear. Now if it survives the next three days, the shear will
relax and Ingrid could make a comeback. But even if it does, a north
northwesterly track over the open Atlantic looks likely.
CLOSE CALL: Since aircraft reconnaissance into hurricanes began in
the 1944, thousands of flights have been made into hurricanes and
typhoons in the Atlantic and Pacific. Only four flights have ever
been lost, including three in the Pacific and a flight into Hurricane
Janet south of Jamaica in 1955. There have been a few close calls,
but one of the closest happened on September 15, 1989. The NOAA P-3
Orion Hurricane Hunter plane nicknamed "Princess" was nearly lost as
it penetrated the eye of intense Hurricane Hugo east of the Leeward
Islands. The plane apparently hit a "mini-swirl," or tornado-like
vortex in the eyewall, exposing it to the strongest g-forces that
have been recorded during a reconnaissance flight t hat survived.
The plane lost two of four engines as it penetrated the eye, nearly
crashing into the sea. With only two engines, the plane had an
extremely difficult time exiting the eye. Fortunately, the crew
found a weaker part of the eyewall and made it back to Barbados.
ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Hurricane Ivan created record wave heights
over the Gulf of Mexico. One wave was measured at 91 feet by profile
moorings placed in the Gulf by the National Research Laboratory four
months before the hurricane. Estimates are that waves in the
hurricane eyewall may have been 130 feet high!

...Thank you Humberto...

Much of Central Alabama received beneficial rains Thursday night and
Friday thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Humberto. The system has
been just what the doctor ordered. It came inland as a minimal
hurricane, caused little damage and brought gentle rains to a drought
stricken Alabama. While it does not erase the massive rainfall
deficits, it does help the short term situation somewhat.
NICE WEEKEND: Drier air means lots of sunshine and cooler
temperatures for the weekend, including 50s across much of the area
by tomorrow morning. There might even be some 40s in the normally
colder locations of North Alabama. You will notice a fresh northerly
breezy today. Highs today and Sunday will be seasonable, right
around 80.
WEDGE ACTION FOR NEXT WEEK: The trough that is bringing us
the cooler and drier conditions will cut off into an upper low over
the Southeast Coast by tomorrow. High pressure at the surface over
the Northeast will produce a persistent easterly flow by Monday.
This flow off the Atlantic will begin to moisten our atmosphere,
meaning more clouds, a fresh easterly breeze and a chance of a shower
by Wednesday. Meanwhile the upper low will retrograde, or move west,
increasing our shower chances each by Thursday – Saturday.
FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn travels to Starkville where clear
skies and temperatures of 78-82 will prevail along with a fresh
northerly breeze. Alabama takes on Arkansas in a 5:45 contest at the
Capstone. Clear and comfortable conditions with game time
temperatures falling from the 80s into the upper 60s by game's end.
UAB entertains Alcorn State in an evening tilt at Birmingham's Legion
Field. Expect similar conditions to T-town with fair skies, fall
feeling temps and a dying breeze.
TROPICAL STORM INGRID: The ninth named storm of the 2007
North Atlantic Hurricane Season continues plodding northwestward this
morning east of the Windward Islands. It has strengthened to a
modest 50 mph storm, but is expected to go downhill starting soon as
a result of shear from strong westerly winds. It will likely weaken
to a tropical depression over the next day or so. The ridging that
has been so prominent for much of the summer has weakened, giving
Ingrid the opportunity to move north northward. It should curve out
to sea in the extended period, if it survives that long.
ON THIS DATE IN 2004: States of emergency were declared
in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida as powerful category
four hurricane Ivan steamed toward the northern Gulf Coast. Ivan was
the third strong hurricane to affect the United States in a thirty
three day period since Hurricane Charley. Curfews were in place.
Prisoners had to be moved out of the Mobile County Jail out of fears
that the facility would flood. Casinos were closed along the
Mississippi Coast. The city of New Orleans, the Mississippi Coast and
the City of Mobile were spared the worst as the hurricane moved more
to the east, making landfall near Gulf Shores around 1:50 a.m. on the
16th.

COOLEST WEATHER OF THE NEW SEASON: Remember, we are already into the
14th day of Autumn as far as we weather humans are concerned and we
are about to see some of the lowest temperatures since last Spring.
We are glad Umberto is gone, but we must give him humble thanks for
what he did for us over the last two days. I have been in weather
seemingly longer than Red Mountain was formed and I think this is one
of the most important rain events I have ever experienced.

One big rain event does not make a major drought by any means,
especially what we have experienced this year. However, rest assured
this rain will greatly help the topsoil moisture, lawns, shrubbery
and pastures and will partly salvage some crops. It will take a
number of other rain events to bring lakes, reservoirs and rivers to
what they are supposed to be. We have posted a very lengthy list of
rain amounts on the 33/40 Blog. Please refer to that. Just to mention
a few (and these are incomplete totals): 3.80 inches in Hoover (off
Caldwell Mill Road), over 4.00 inches at Altadena near the Colonnade,
4.77 in Inverness and an estimated 4-5 inches north of Guin. Heavy
showers in the middle of the day were not included in those totals.

A CHILL IN THE AIR: That is what will happen Sunday morning when you
get up. We are calling for a low of 55 here in Central Alabama. We
feel sure some of the NE Alabama cool spots, like Bridgeport and
Valley Head, may have 48. There may still be a few showers tonight as
the cold front pushes into our region. A few showers were beginning
to develop along the front in Central Missouri this afternoon. Almost
all of Saturday will be sunny and Sunday will be the type day that
the Chamber of Commerce loves.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: There will be some soggy fields tonight for the
high school games. On Saturday, Alabama meets Arkansas at 5:45 in
Tuscaloosa. It should be around 78 at kick off and upper 60s by the
end of the game. Auburn meets Mississippi State in a midday game.
Sunny weather with low humidity and temperatures 78 to 92. For the
UAB/Alcorn State game Saturday evening, about 77 at kick off and 68
at the final whistle.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Ingrid was 755 miles east of the
Lesser Antilles. Latest track forecast indicates she will curve NW
into the open Atlantic a long time before she gets to the Northern
Leeward Islands or Puerto Rico. The remnants of Humberto will be
drifting across Central Alabama. He has already done his duty.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The majority owner and I rearranged the
guest bedroom, where we are living, temporarily, moving my recliner
in there. So, I sometimes sleep in the bed and then the recliner.
Little Miss Molly, puzzled at all that, hopped down off the bed last
night and jumped up on the recliner footrest right against my ankle.
It is one of her favorite spots and she loves to stay close to me. I
can tell Little Miss Molly really misses me. After all, we have a 5-
year history together walking a full mile every day and bunches of
ballgames. The grandkids are doing most of that now. She really
enjoys them, but I feel sure her memories together with me are
kicking in. Life goes on......

...Just What We Needed...

A GOOD SOAKING: Rain increased across Alabama late yesterday and last
night in advance of the remnant circulation of former Hurricane
Humberto, which made landfall on the Southeast Texas coast early
yesterday morning. Deep tropical moisture from the system will remain
over Alabama today, and will combine with a cold front approaching
from the north to produce another day with periods of rain and a few
thunderstorms. Additional rain totals of one to two inches are likely
today, and considering the fact that some neighborhoods received
three inches of rain last night; we could see a few spots with storm
totals of around five inches. A very welcome thing for a state that
is parched from a long and severe drought.

The rain will taper off from west to east during the evening hours,
and at this time we believe most all of the rain should out of the
state by midnight. There is a chance the rain will be over by high
school football time tonight, but we suggest you take some rain gear
as a course of least regret. Temperatures should be in the low to mid
70s during the games tonight.

A FINE FALL WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air will move into Alabama over
the weekend. Any lingering clouds tomorrow morning should give way to
a mostly sunny sky during the afternoon. The high tomorrow will be
only in the low 80s, and by Sunday morning we are still expecting
lows in the 54 to 59 degree range for most communities; our coolest
morning since May 22. It is possible that some of the cooler valleys
across Northeast Alabama might even reach 48 or 49 degrees. Sunday
will feature maximum sunshine with a high up in the middle 80s as the
dry air remains in place.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host Arkansas at Bryant-Denny
Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 5:45… the sky will be clear with a
kickoff temperature of 80 degrees, falling through the 70s during the
game. Auburn will host Mississippi State at Jordan-Hare tomorrow
morning (an 11:30 kickoff); the sky will clear during the game; the
kickoff temperature will be around 78 degrees, rising into the low
80s during the game. And, UAB will host Alcorn State at Legion Field
tomorrow evening… that game kicks off at 6:00, and the sky will be
clear with about 77 degrees at kickoff, with upper 60s likely by the
fourth quarter.

MORE TROPICAL ACTION: Tropical Storm Ingrid formed last night in the
Atlantic Ocean, about 800 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Top
winds are near 40 mph, and some short term strengthening is possible.
But, wind shear over the system is expected to increase in coming
days, and the system could weaken to a tropical depression again by
early next week as it passes north of Puerto Rico.

SOAKED: Rain totals last night included 3.29" at Inverness. 2.72" at
Meadowbrook (Shelby County), 2.48" at Gardendale, 1.50" at Roebuck,
and 1.95" at the Shelby County Airport near Calera.

LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN NEXT 24 HOURS: Thanks to Hurricane Humberto, who
is no longer a hurricane, we should get a lot of rain tonight and
Friday. Even after dropping to tropical depression status, Humberto
will still be loaded with moisture. This storm system should bring
more rain to Alabama than we have had in a long time. Depending on
the future path, we believe Central Alabama will get around 2 inches
of rain and possibly a little more.

There is still a little mystery with Humberto. The remnants should
move east across Central Mississippi Friday and into West/Central
Alabama Friday evening. If that holds true, it should be a good rain
producer for us, but it could very well cause problems with high
school football games Friday night. Probably the most difficult part
of the forecast is for Saturday. We believe, however, that most of
the showers by early Saturday will be south of Birmingham and mainly
down over South Alabama. Meanwhile, cooler and drier air will spill
in behind Humberto from the north. This should bring us clearing
weather on Saturday with noticeably lower humidity. Sunday weather
should be a real treat with mostly sunshine, low humidity and highs
about 84. We are calling for a cool 54-degree low Sunday morning
across Central Alabama. This means that some of the cooler valleys in
North and NE Alabama could have 48. Dry weather should last well into
next week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Humberto moved ashore at the SE corner of Texas
early today. He intensified rapidly before making landfall and
sustained winds reached 85 mph. This afternoon the circulation was
moving across Central Louisiana. He had picked up speed, somewhat, so
SE Texas and much of Louisiana will not get as much rain as
originally forecast. Houston escaped with no real flood problems.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression #8 was still way out in the Atlantic.
The projection by next Tuesday is for it to be approaching the
Northern Leeward Islands on a path that would put it north of Puerto
Rico. Not sealed in stone by any means.

THREE-DOT STUFF: Found out last night at church, that long time
friend, Patsy Westerhouse, thought that NOAA Weather Radio was
spelled NOAH in the Bible and had some connection with the master
flood….believe it or not, a number of other people over the years
made that connection…we even had a person drive out to 11 West Oxmoor
Road once to see the weather radio facility and find out specifically
what NOAA stood for (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
… there was wind damage when Humberto came ashore, but no widespread
major damage…freeze warning tonight for much of the Dakotas, which
will end their growing season and send the rest of the mosquitoes
into oblivion…80% of the Alabama corn crop is still rated in Very
Poor or Poor condition because of the drought…Tuscaloosa rain
deficiency still over 24 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I slept in two places last night—the
bed and my recliner. Got up several times to do a weather update.
Little Miss Molly would barely raise her head each time I got up, but
every time I would pause long enough to love her and give her a belly
rub. She acts real puzzled about our weird hours sometimes. Often she
gets so tired, she puts herself to bed and seems annoyed when we come
later and wake her up.....

...A Big Wet-Down Ahead...

POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN: All of the ingredients are coming together
for the possibility of a very significant, beneficial rain event for
Alabama tonight and tomorrow. Our two players: Tropical Storm
Humberto, which is east of Houston this morning, and a strong cold
front approaching from the north, which will move through here late
tomorrow night. Moisture from Humberto should move northeast, and
merge with the approaching front. We expect showers and storms to
begin forming this afternoon, with the rain becoming more widespread
tonight and tomorrow. If the core of the deep tropical moisture from
Humberto moves through here, rainfall amounts of one to three inches
will be common, with isolated amounts to four inches. This will
indeed make a dent in the drought that has been a thorn in our side
for much of the warm weather season. The rain should end from
northwest to southeast tomorrow night and early Saturday morning,
generally in the midnight to 6:00 a.m. time frame.

FINE FALL WEEKEND: The sky will clear Saturday morning, and we expect
a delightful weekend with lower humidity, a fresh north breeze, and a
cool Sunday morning. We are still expecting a low early Sunday
somewhere between 54 and 59 degrees under a clear sky, and the cooler
valleys in Northeast Alabama could even see 48 or 49 degrees. You
will know September is here this weekend.

TROPICS HEATING UP: Humberto made landfall late last night as a
strong tropical storm along the Upper Texas coast, not far from
Galveston. The remnant circulation will move northeast, through
Louisiana and into West Mississippi during the next 24 hours. While a
little part of the system will hang back over the Northwest Gulf of
Mexico, it sure seems like Alabama will get that surge of deep moisture.

Out in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression number 8 is expected to
become Tropical Storm Ingrid today; this one is moving to the
northwest, and a general decrease in forward motion is expected
during the next few days. It should pass a little north of the
Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico late in the weekend and early next
week; from there it could recurve into the open Atlantic, or be
forced westward, in the direction of Florida or the South Atlantic
coast of the U.S. We will keep a close eye on that.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: For the games around the state tonight, a
shower or thunderstorm is possible with a kickoff temperature near 80
degrees. For tomorrow night, rain is likely with temperatures in the
mid to upper 70s.

THE BIG CHILL: The growing season is coming to an end for parts of
the Northern Plains and the Upper Midwest; the low yesterday in
Hibbing and Floodwood, Minnesota was 25 degrees. Even colder air will
be dropping southward from Canada during the next 24 hours.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Our annual SKYWARN training event called Storm
Xtreme is set for Saturday, November 10 at the BJCC… if you want to
become a volunteer storm spotter, you need to be there. More details
as the event gets closer...

MUCH OPTIMISM FOR RAIN: This looks like the best chance for Alabama
to get a substantial amount of rain over a larger area than we have
had in a long time. We have two major ingredients: another cold front
pushing down from the north with a good influx of moisture from the
south, which means of course, our old friend the Gulf of Mexico.
Enhancing our optimism is the fact that Tropical Storm Humberto has
formed over the NW Gulf of Mexico. More about that in our tropical
discussion.

The cool front that moved into Alabama yesterday stalled about where
we though it would—right in the center of the state. It will stay
there or dissipate awaiting its cousin, which is another cold front
that will be stronger and more pronounced. The second front will be
moving into Alabama by Friday. It will cause some showers and
thunderstorms to increase by Thursday afternoon. Those will continue
Thursday night and become even more widespread on Friday. Not out of
the question for many parts of Alabama to get 1 to 2 inches of rain,
especially over the south portion. Some of that will depend on the
future movement of Humberto. The second front will also bring much
drier air to Alabama starting late Friday night or Saturday. The
humidity will be noticeably lower both Saturday and Sunday with highs
only between 82 and 84 and we are still sticking with our 58 forecast
low for Sunday morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Depression #8 was 1,130 miles east of the
Lesser Antilles and it may become Tropical Storm Ingrid. However, the
tropical depression over the NW Gulf of Mexico increased to tropical
storm strength this morning and was named Humberto. This tropical
storm may not have time to reach hurricane force before moving
ashore, but it will cause major problems in waterlogged Texas and
other areas. Early this afternoon, sustained winds were 45 mph. It is
expected to mainly impact the Upper Texas coast. Rain amounts over SE
Texas and SW Louisiana could exceed 10 inches. Coastal and SE Texas
are already waterlogged. Houston has received over 50 inches of rain
this year, an excess of almost 18 inches. The center of the tropical
storm will move NNE and NE and diminish to a depression over North
Louisiana Thursday night.

THREE-DOT STUFF: Hope you do not mind these incomplete sentences. I
love to write that way. It saves space and it saves you reading time…
Tom Waller, one of our daily readers in downtown Columbus, Miss.,
advises that they have only had ¾ of an inch of rain in over 6 weeks…
trees are dying along with grass and shrubbery…the growing season
ended over the Upper Midwest last night, as temperatures dropped as
low as 25 at Hibbing, Minnesota…almost 4 inches of rain fell in SE
Texas yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This may sound strange, but I wish I
could wake up one morning in a foul mood just to watch Little Miss
Molly give me a quick correction. I am at my best between 5:00 and
10:00 a.m. and I never wake up sad. I am thankful for that. Even if I
did, I think Little Miss Molly could make me turn 180 degrees in the
first 5 minutes. She is truly an ambassador. If there was such a
thing as doggy public officials, she could be the mayor of Trussville
or Birmingham or Jefferson County Commission Chairman. Mayor Molly
would sound good. Life goes on.....

...Showers Shift To the South...

DRY AIR CREEPS IN FROM THE NORTH: The weather today in your
neighborhood will all depend on the placement of a surface boundary
that separates dry and cooler continental air to the north from warm
and moist tropical air to the south. We figure that front will stall
somewhere close to a line from Butler to Clanton to Heflin today, so
the best chance of showers and storms will be along and south of that
line. While a few isolated showers are not totally out of the
question to the north, most communities north of I-20 will be dry and
pleasant today with lower humidity values.
Tomorrow, the boundary dissipates and moist air will move northward,
and we will mention a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms
statewide. Then, on Friday, a second front will push into Alabama,
and should bring a healthy round of showers and thunderstorms
statewide. For now, it looks like the main threat of rain Friday will
come in the period from noon until midnight, so there could be wet
weather issues for many high school football stadiums around the
state Friday night. Rainfall totals from one-half to one inch look
likely Friday, and we will welcome every drop.

A VERY NICE WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air will rush into the state
after midnight Friday night, setting the stage for a delightful
weekend. We expect a good supply of sunshine on Saturday and Sunday
with a fresh north breeze and low humidity values. Daytime
temperatures will peak in the low to mid 80s, and by early Sunday
morning we figure most towns around here will be see a low somewhere
between 54 and 59 degrees. We might even have a report of upper 40s
from some of the cooler valleys across the northern half of the
state. If we reach our forecast low of 58, that will be our coolest
reading since May 22.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: The Gulf of Mexico remains disturbed this
morning. There is a chance a tropical depression could form somewhere
in the western Gulf of Mexico during the next 48 hours; steering
currents are very weak in that region, and little motion ix expected
other than a slight drift to the west. And, in the Atlantic, a well
organized tropical wave is moving to the west/northwest about 1000
miles east of the Windward Islands. This system also has the
potential to develop into a tropical depression in coming days; this
one should turn more to the northwest, passing north of the Lesser
Antilles by the weekend. It remains to be seen if this system will
recurve over the open Atlantic, or be forced westward toward the
Atlantic coast of the U.S.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Hurricane Frederic slammed into the Alabama
coast; it crossed Dauphin Island and made landfall near the Alabama/
Mississippi border around 10 p.m.. A wind gust to 145 mph was
reported at the Dauphin Island Bridge. A storm surge of twelve feet
destroyed much of Gulf Shores. A total of eleven fatalities were
directly attributed to Frederic.

TWO FRONTS TO PAY US A VISIT: It did reach at least 90 at Birmingham
Airport again this afternoon before some showers arrived in the area.
That has happened time and time again this summer. We will do a count
on those in a day or two. Now, all of us weather people are semi-
excited about two fronts coming our way. There are some questionable
decisions to be made on just how far the first front will get south
of Birmingham before parking itself. That will determine greatly how
many showers or storms we will get tomorrow. We think we will have
scattered ones here in Central Alabama, but most of them south of
Birmingham. Down over South Alabama, near the coast, there will be a
lot of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The
extreme south part of the state needs the rain a lot less than north
and central sections.

The second front is the one we are most interested in. It should come
into our area Friday night or Saturday and bring us a noticeable drop
in humidity and some cooler temperatures for the weekend. We are
going to list Saturday as being dry with decreasing clouds and a
brisk north wind and highs only in the mid 80s and noticeably lower
humidity. We are also going to call your attention to low
temperatures early on Sunday morning around 58 or 60. There are a lot
of the North Alabama valleys that may see mid 50s. That is going to
feel extremely pleasant after our long, hot summer. Sunday looks
great with almost all sunshine and low humidity.

TROPICAL WEATHER: What is left of Gabrielle was falling apart south
of Nova Scotia this afternoon. It was moving ENE at over 20 mph. The
last advisory has been issued. A tropical wave far away in the
Atlantic, 1,250 miles east of the Windward Islands has weakened a
bit, but it is still possible for it to become a tropical depression
in a day or two as it moves WNW about 10 mph. Showers and storms with
a broad low-pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico 100 miles east of the
lower Texas coast. Upper-level winds have become a little more
favourable for development, although it will be hindered somewhat by
being so close to land.

THREE DOT STUFF: Nice to see a large mass of cool air headed south…
43 in Chicago tonight…26 in Stanley, Idaho this morning…growing
season should end tonight over Northern Wisconsin and much of
Minnesota…19 below zero at Summit, Greenland today atop the ice cap…
it is cooling down over a big chunk of the Far North…the Birmingham
normal high has dropped to 86 after being at 91 during mid summer…
nice pleasant 60 this morning in DeSoto State Park…114 in Death
Valley yesterday…3.80 inches of rain at Love Field in Dallas in the
last 24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For only the second time in two weeks,
I escorted my little 9-pound pal, known as Little Miss Molly, on her
morning walk. The grandkids have been doing that and I sure have
missed it. I woke Miss Molly this morning and I simply love to see
her first three minutes awakening. It is yawn, yawn, yawn, stretch,
stretch, stretch, look up at me with the most pleasant expression and
await her traditional head scratching and belly rub. She is so warm
it feels like her body temperature is 140. It takes her only 3
minutes to go from a deep sleep to fully charged energy. I am trying
to get her to teach me to change my metabolism to one like hers. Life
goes on. Busy, busy, busy.....

...Showers Return To Central Alabama...

WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: The forecast for today will headline
increasing chances of rain, with a decrease in daytime temperatures.
I think most folks around here will consider that good news,
especially considering the fact that most communities in North-
Central Alabama need anywhere from 18 to 22 inches of rain to get
back to normal levels for the year.
A cold front will approach from the north today, and showers and
thunderstorms will become more numerous this afternoon and tonight.
We expect rain totals to average around one-half inch, but local
amounts to one inch are possible from the stronger thunderstorms.
And, because of the increased clouds and showers, we expect a high
today in the mid to upper 80s, about where we should be for early
September in Alabama.
TOMORROW AND THURSDAY: The lead front will become stationary
somewhere over Central Alabama early tomorrow, and the exact location
of that boundary will determine the extent of the rain on these two
days. For now, it looks like the most numerous showers and
thunderstorms will be south of I-20, or south of a line from
Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston. But, we sure can't rule out a
few scattered showers as far north as U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman
to Gadsden).
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A second, stronger front will push in here
Friday night, and should bring another healthy round of showers and
thunderstorms. Another opportunity for one-half to one inch of rain
for most of the state. Then, following that front, a delightful
change to cooler and drier air is ahead for the weekend. At this
point, it looks like most spots will see a high somewhere between 80
and 85 on Saturday and Sunday with low humidity and a fresh north
breeze. Our coolest morning should come early Sunday, with lows in
the 58 to 62 degree range should be common. Some of the cooler
valleys up in North Alabama might even see low to mid 50s, a real
sign of the times. And, of course, with the dry air the weekend
should be dry.
TROPICAL ACTION: Tropical Depression Gabrielle is moving rapidly away
from the U.S., and will become extra-tropical over the North Atlantic
in coming days. Out in the Central Atlantic, a well organized
tropical wave is moving steadily to the west/northwest, about half-
way between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. This has
the potential to become a tropical depression today, and there is
still a great degree of uncertainty if this will recurve into the
open Atlantic, or keep moving into the Caribbean. And, the southern
Gulf of Mexico remains unsettled; upper air winds should become more
favorable for some development in this region during the mid-week
period.
TEXAS RAIN: The rain total at D/FW Airport (Dallas/Fort Worth)
yesterday was 3.90"; most of that rain fell during the morning hours,
and was responsible for flash flooding in a number of locations in
Dallas and Tarrant Counties.

AUTUMN ROLLING UP ITS SLEEVES: It is getting that time of year.
Things are coming together that will bring two fronts to our neck of
the woods over the next few days. The first one will not have a great
impact as far as temperatures are concerned, but the second one
arriving this weekend could send the old thermometer to around 60 by
Sunday morning with some upper 50s in the North Alabama valleys. The
humidity will also drop off over the weekend. We may have to eat our
weather maps later, but that is the scenario we are going with now.
What does this mean for the rain bucket?

The rain situation is the most important issue at hand for the
moment. There could be a few showers or thunderstorms later today and
this evening, however there should be an increase in showers and
storms by Tuesday afternoon, as the first front approaches from the
NW. We think the best chance of showers will shift south of the
Birmingham area on Wednesday, although we may get some. There is also
a slight chance on Thursday. As the second front gets closer, we look
for scattered showers and storms on Friday. The noticeably cooler air
will arrive on Saturday with any showers ending with breezy and
cooler weather Saturday night. Rain amounts are hard to judge at this
time, but a number of places here in Central Alabama could easily get
1 inch or more.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Depression Gabrielle is out of the
picture for the USA. It was located more than 300 miles SSW of
Nantucket, Massachusetts and moving NE. A tropical wave was midway
between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. It was
producing a large area of clouds and thunderstorms and was slowly
becoming better organized. It may be a tropical depression in a day
or so as it moves westward 10 to 15. There was another tropical wave
over the Windward and Leeward Islands, but not as impressive. There
was a large, but disorganized, area of clouds and thunderstorms over
the Central and SW Gulf of Mexico. It should move slowly west or WNW
in the next day or two, but things are not favourable for it to
develop much.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Here we go again. More impressive rain amounts
in the Plains. Yesterday Will Rogers Airport at Oklahoma City got
6.28 inches and there was 3 inches at Wichita Falls in North Texas.
We are watching with interest thermometers in the Far North. It was
23 this morning at Stanley, Idaho and in Yellowstone National Park.
At Alert, in extreme North Canada, it was 19 with a steady light
snow. Signs of the times.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With the population of the home of Miss
Molly having more than doubled, she gets so much attention until
sometimes she slithers away into a nook and cranny and steals a nap.
She also comes in my office more often and wants me to let her sit on
my desk, where she promptly wags her tail so much it sweeps off my
keyboard. She loves to look out the window. I believe she also played
a record number of ballgames over the weekend, at times including her
and three humans. That really blow her mind with balls coming from
all directions, but she chases down every single one, comes charging
back and dumps it at our feet for us to toss again. Life goes on and
Molly is the fastest mover......

...Fall Is Ahead...

Looking over the proverbial weather horizon, we see some truly fall
like air that might very well be in our future here in Alabama after
next weekend. We have been longing for such a thing through all of
this summer's heat. We might also see some enhanced rain chances as
we head through the coming week. Let's talk about it.

OUR FORECAST: First, we need rain. We have been hoping it would
come in nice quantities Tuesday and Wednesday. To get that, we need
some tropical moisture to work in here from the Gulf ahead of an
approaching front. Now the front seems to be on track, but the
moisture doesn't. So we will call for a chance of showers and storms
on Tuesday as the front approaches and again on Wednesday and
Thursday as the front stalls in the area. It looks like a little
drier air could work into the area on Friday, at least enough to push
the showers mainly to our east. As another big trough works it way
across the country, a real live fall-like cold front will arrive over
the weekend, potentially giving us highs in the 70s and lows in the
50s. Keep your fingers crossed.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Gabrielle is heading out over the open
Atlantic after paying a short visit to eastern North Carolina on
Sunday. Gabrielle is located about 150 miles east of the North
Carolina/Virginia border this morning. The storm will continue
moving northeast out to sea over the next few days. The eastern
Atlantic is becoming more active and a couple of tropical depressions
could form between Africa and the Caribbean Islands this week. But
the good news is that the tropical cyclones will take advantage of a
weakness in the Bermuda Ridge and take a shortcut to the northern
Atlantic. Finally, closer to home, a weak low over the southern Gulf
of Mexico is undergoing a tremendous amount of shear. That is
expected to weaken tonight, but it does not look like a tropical
cyclone will develop from this system.

REMEMBERING FREDERIC: On this date in 1979, Frederic had emerged
into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and was heading slowly west
northwest. The storm was strengthening all the while and would
become a hurricane later in the day. Frederic made landfall on the
evening of the 12th near the Alabama/Mississippi border as a category
three hurricane with sustained winds of 135 mph. Damage along the
Alabama coast was severe with a twelve foot storm surge inundating
Gulf Shores and doing much of the damage. .

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: As the center of intense Hurricane Carla
approached Texas on the 10th, winds near the center were estimated at
150 mph. Reconnaissance aircraft indicated a central pressure of 931
millibars just prior to its striking the coast. Only 46 lost their
lives because of early warnings. Severe damage along a wide expanse
of the Texas coast was caused by unusually prolonged winds, high
tides and flooding from torrential rains. Damage was about $2 billion
in 1990 dollars.

...Some Beneficial Rains This Week?...

A beautiful Sunday is in progress across Alabama this afternoon with
lots of sunshine and very warm temperatures. Skies are very blue
thanks to some fresh air that has filtered in from the east. The
radar is clear, except for showers over the northwestern corner of
the state. Temperatures are headed toward the low 90s for the most
part. Look for another fair night, with lows in the 60s again.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks to be a lot like today, with partly
cloudy and very warm conditions again. Showers and storms will be
limited to extreme northern sections of Alabama, ahead of an
approaching cold front. Those showers and storms will increase from
the west on Tuesday as the front continues our way. The arrival of a
slug of Gulf moisture associated with an approaching tropical wave
should beef up the rainfall amounts. There could also be some strong
thunderstorms on Tuesday. The front hangs up over the area on
Wednesday, continuing a chance of showers and storms. That will be
the general weather trend through the end of the week. Then a much
more powerful cold front arrives late next weekend or early in the
beginning of the following week.
GABRIELLE AND THE REST OF THE TROPICS: Tropical storm Gabrielle
got a little better organized early this morning as she crossed the
Gulfstream and took aim on Cape Lookout North Carolina. She has
spent the day traversing the beautiful countryside of eastern North
Carolina, bringing wind, waves and rain to the spectacular Outer
Banks. Places like Hatteras, Avon, Rodanthe and Salvo along the
vulnerable string of barrier islands experience a minor surge, but
not enough to overwash NC-12. Waves, North Carolina has been
appropriately named today, with nice 8-14 foot waves for surfers, but
a deadly undertow for casual swimmers. The center of the storm will
pass near Manteo as it turns northeast ahead of the approaching
trough and heads out to sea. September tropical storms and
hurricanes are a way of life on the Outer Banks and a part of the
rich lore of the region. If I could pick a different place to live
every month for weather, the Outer Banks would be my September place.
ON THIS DATE IN 1919: The fourth strongest hurricane ever to affect
the United States struck southern Florida on this date in 1919. The
pressure dropped to 27.37 inches near Dry Tortugas, west of Key West.
Ten vessels were lost at sea accounting for more than 500 of the
800-900 deaths. The 1919 Hurricane was one of the largest ever in
United States history. Residents all along the Gulf Coast agonized
as they waited for the hurricane's next move. Warnings were posted
all along the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida after the storm passed
the Keys. The storm would make landfall at Corpus Christi TX on the
14th where 284 people were killed in spite of the warnings. The
total of 600-900 deaths caused by the Hurricane of 1919 made the
storm the third deadliest hurricane in the United States in the
Twentieth Century.
