...Two Shortwaves In One...

GOOD MORNING: Remember the old certs commercials? Two, two two mints in
one? Well we have a similar weather deal this weekend.

TALE OF TWO SHORTWAVES: Short waves are relatively small troughs of low
pressure in the atmosphere. We also refer to them as upper level
disturbances, or vort maxes, which is short for vorticity maxima. They are
the movers and shakers in our weather, producing clouds and precipitation.
This morning, there one in a tandem across the U.S. is located over the
Rocky Mountains. The second is just moving into the Pacific Northwest.

Clouds will be thickening through the day today as the first system swings
into the Plains and rounds a bend heading on to the northeast. I think we
stay dry through the afternoon and evening hours, with some rain reaching
northwest and western sections of the state around midnight or just before.
Rain should be widespread during the hours after midnight across much of the
area, lasting into mid morning on Sunday. I can't wait! Great weather to
wake up to.

Many of you will experience one to one and a half inches of rain.
Thunderstorms will be scarce to non-existent, with very limited instability,
although we can't rule out a few rumbles of thunder Sunday morning. Rain
exits by lunchtime with some sun possible during the afternoon.

The second disturbance is going to swing by Sunday night into Monday.
There is an outside chance there could be a shower during this period, but
the chance looks small. Skies will be partially sunny. Look for freezing
temps Monday night.

REST OF THE WEEK: Partly cloudy conditions will prevail on Monday with a
cool northwest breeze. High pressure will prevail through midweek.
Showers will return on Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: Thick ice on the Mississippi River at Vicksburg,
Mississippi? The amazing sight occurred on this date during the tremendous
cold winter of 1940.

...Rain returns over the Weekend...

Get ready for more weather changes for Alabama. Today should be dry and
pleasant with a partly sunny sky. Most spots should rise into the low 60s
this afternoon.

Clouds return tomorrow, and we will deal with periods of rain and possibly a
thunderstorm tomorrow night into Sunday morning. At this point the upper
support and instability don't seem favorable for any severe thunderstorms.

Then, a stronger upper wave moves through Monday. In advance of this,
another round of rain and storms is likely late Sunday night into Monday.
Once again, with only marginal instability values at this time severe
weather doesn't seem especially likely. But, some pretty decent rain amounts
are a good bet. Many Alabama communities will receive between one and two
inches from tomorrow night through Monday night.

Following Monday's rain, look for a shot of much colder air Tuesday of next
week. The Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama will have a hard time
getting out of the 30s; we will forecast highs around here only in the low
40s. A few snow flurries are possible late Monday and Tuesday morning over
northeast Alabama.

ALAKSA COLD: Chandalar Lake, AK dropped to 59 below zero yesterday morning.
In Fairbanks, the high was 39 below zero, which followed a morning low of 49
below. The average temperature in Fairbanks so far this month is 19.2 below
zero, and temperatures for the rest of the month will range from 30 to 50
below zero. Based on that forecast, January will be at least the fifth
coldest month on record for that Alaskan city.

TEXAS WARMTH: The warmest places in the U.S. yesterday were both in Texas:
McAllen and Laredo both reached 77 degrees.

...Another Sunny Cool Day...

Today will be another day of bright sunshine and crisp temperatures across
Alabama as cool and dry air stays in place. Most places will see highs today
in the 54 to 58 degree range, about normal for late January in Alabama.
Another light freeze is likely late tonight.

Tomorrow will be another dry day, and a warming trend begins as we reach the
low 60s.

WEEKEND STORM: Clouds will begin to return on Saturday as moist air flows
northward. A few showers could show up by Saturday night, but the next main
rain event should come during the day Sunday.

We will highlight rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, and another good soaking
looks likely. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are a good bet, and we
will also be watching for the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms.
As always in January, the amount of really unstable air will be in question.

We will be able to fine tune the severe weather risk on tomorrow's package.

Cooler and drier air will follow Sunday's storm for early next week.

BIG TIME COLD: Yesterday's high in Fairbanks, Alaska was 35 degrees below
zero. They should be in the -40 to -45 degree range early this morning.
Chandalar Lake and Fort Yukon (both in Alaska) dropped to -53 yesterday
morning. This cold air will be on the move in the next week or so, we will
keep a
close eye on it.

STORM ALERT 2006: Our first stop on the ninth annual Storm Alert tour will
be one week from tonight at Bevill State in Hamilton. We will introduce some
really cool new weather technology, and tell some amazing Alabama weather
stories. And, of course, we will get your family ready for the spring
tornado season!

AN OVERNIGHT FREEZE: This could be one of the coldest nights we have had so
far in January. It has not been below 28 all month in Birmingham and we
expect 27 tonight. While that 27 is the projected average across a good part
of Central Alabama, the old thermometer may sink on down to the 22 to 25
range in the colder valleys, especially in NE Alabama.

Another sunny day Thursday and most of Friday as temperatures moderate.
Clouds will increase Saturday with some showers arriving late in the day and
becoming more numerous Saturday night. Our main rain with this storm system
will be Saturday night and Sunday. A few thunderstorms during that event
could be strong. We will also see some 1 to 2 inch rainfall amounts with
this event.

JANUARY CONTINUES ABNORMAL: That includes both temperatures and rainfall.
Based on Birmingham records, which are typical for Central Alabama, the
thermometer has climbed to 60 or higher on 15 of the first 24 days including
5 days 70 or warmer. The temperature has been down to freezing or lower only
5 nights. Most sections of the state are showing an excess in rainfall so
far.

AROUND THE GLOBE: Fort Yukon, Alaska north of the Brooks Range had 54 below
zero this morning. Ironically that is the station that holds the all time
high temperature record for Alaska of 100 degrees...also 54 below in
Chandalar Lake this morning, 52 below in Eagle and over in NW Canada it was
45 below at Dawson in the Yukon Territory...down here where 48 of our 50
states are attached, it was 15 below at Gunnison, Colorado...83 in Ft. Myers
and Vero Beach, Florida was yesterday's warmest.

OTHER QUICK NOTES: After some very mild temperatures for part of this
month, 3 to 7 inches of snow was expected in Saranac Lake, New York in the
next 24 hours...on this date in 1991, the temperature fell to minus 25 in
that resort town...enjoyed a ride up to Sand Rock Monday...great to see Vic
Bell again, the 33/40 weather watcher from Black Creek...on the way home,
James demolished one of those big, thick custom made chocolate milkshakes at
Hardees in Rainbow City in only 3 minutes...he sounded like a vacuum
cleaner...yummy, yummy...Happy 44th birthday to our own Bill Murray today.
He is celebrating it while on business in Dallas...guess who will cross over
the great divide with their 50th birthday in early June?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: So sad to read in the paper this morning about
Little Bo. He was a puppy that was stolen from a family on Highway 69 south
of Tuscaloosa while the family was getting ready for church. That
unfortunate act devastated a little 4-year-old child...if you were to ask
Little Miss Molly she would say she is not getting enough playtime. She must
be forgetful because we have played a record amount in the last 3 days. It
drives her crazy when I toss 4 balls to near the ceiling and let them fall
all around her. She goes berserk while they are bouncing and tries to gather
them all in a pile for another round...most enjoyable walk with the little
lady. Crisp and clear. The Old Crow Motel was vacant and looked very stark.
Even the Old Crow Creek is running again after the recent rains. Makes a
pleasant sound as it comes down over a little rock falls. Life goes
on...hopefully for a long, long time.

...Sunny With a Cool Breeze...

Cooler air will move into Alabama today on brisk northwest winds gusting as
high as 25 mph. Despite almost maximum available sunshine, we are forecast
highs only in the mid 50s today. And, tonight with a clear sky and light
wind, the mercury will drop quickly, and most spots will be in the 24 to 29
degree range by daybreak tomorrow.

A warming trend will begin Friday, which will last into the weekend, But,
along with the warming trend, will come increasing moisture in advance of a
storm system to the west.

While we expect much of the day Saturday to remain dry, clouds will increase
as the weekend begins. Showers should arrive Saturday night, with rain
becoming more widespread on Sunday.

Sunday looks like an active weather day for Alabama, with a dynamic storm
system and abundant moisture from the Gulf. Rainfall amounts of one to two
inches are likely, and strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible as
well. The severe weather threat will all depend on how much unstable air
will be available.

Cooler and drier air will follow Sunday's rain and storms early next week.

HAWAII SNOW: Officials closed the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano to
the public after a snowstorm shut down access for the first time this winter
season. Clouds blanketed Hawaii's tallest peak this past weekend. A blanket
of snow forced everyone to evacuate, including park rangers. Yes, it does
snow in Hawaii!

EUROPE COLD: A glacial chill has claimed more lives in across Eastern Europe
in recent days, forcing schools to shut and disrupting public transport as
cold cracked rail lines. In Poland, a total of 39 people have died since a
cold spell hit the country last Thursday.

DRY WEATHER UNTIL WEEKEND: Another one of those complete turn-arounds in
Alabama weather in the last 24 hours. The difference between yesterday and
today is almost like opposite parts of the country.

There was some dense fog over parts of North Alabama early this morning but
dry air took control and the rest of the day was as good as you can ask for
in January.

Tonight, we will see temperature drop to near freezing especially in the
valleys. By tomorrow, a fresh surge of cool air will arrive from the
northwest and highs will only be in the mid 50s. It will also be breezy
tomorrow. Our coldest temperature will be Thursday morning when we expect an
average low of 27 across Central Alabama.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Looks like another good round of wet weather over the
weekend. We believe that most of Saturday will be dry but showers will
arrive by late in the day. There will be a general increase in showers and
storms Saturday night continuing on Sunday. Some areas may get more than an
inch of rain from this next storm system.

We are doing OK on rain so far in January. Mostly sections of the state show
a surplus with more than an inch above normal in parts of Central Alabama.

WAY TOO WARM: Unlike December, the month of January so far is running well
above normal in Alabama. Daytime highs have averaged nearly 10 degrees
warmer than normal and nighttime lows 7 to 9 degrees too warm. This is
significant. At Birmingham, the temperature has not dropped below 28 all
month.

DID YOU KNOW? That Wadi Halfa, Sudan (Africa) only gets an average of 1/10th
of an inch of rainfall per year. That would wet the streets but practically
no runoff. Birmingham gets about 540 times that much!

ROAMING: 36 below zero was one of the coldest temperatures in Canada this
morning...in Alaska, it was 47 below at Bettles where there was 19 inches of
snow...in the Lower 48, the coldest was 29 below southwest of Gunnison,
Colorado...85 in Fort Meyers was yesterday's warmest...33 inches of snow on
the ground at Steamboat Springs in Northwest Colorado...9 years ago today, a
tornado struck the eastern part of Tuscaloosa, killing one person and
injuring 8. A strip shopping center was hit crushing the roof of a crowded
supermarket. An automobile was picked up from the parking lot and blown atop
the store.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Ever feel like you are being shadowed most of
your waking hours. That happens to me all the time. Molly Keeps such close
check on me. At our front door, there are narrow windows that go from the
top of the door to the floor. I can go out to grab the paper and almost
instantly her little nose is pressing against the window to check on me.
When we go out through the garage to leave, she immediately parks herself by
those windows to make sure we are leaving...we have to clean the little
smudges from those windows often...but nice to know that Molly cares. Life
goes on.

...Brighter Days; A Cooling Trend...

After a brief period of low clouds and fog this morning, sunshine returns to
Alabama today following yesterday's soaking. Temperatures should reach the
low 60s, about 7 to 10 degrees above normal for late January.

A developing, deep, cold upper trough over the Northeast U.S. will bring
colder air into the state tonight and tomorrow. Early morning temperatures
should be close to freezing both tomorrow and Thursday, with daytime highs
in the 50s. The air will remain very dry and there is no chance of rain here
through mid-week.

NEXT RAIN: Clouds will return to the state at the end of the week, and we
will be dealing with some rain at times over the weekend as another weather
system moves in from the west. At this point it looks like the best chance
of rain will come from late Saturday afternoon, through Saturday night and
into Sunday morning. At this point we don't expect any severe weather, but
another good soaking is possible.

WILL FEBRUARY MAKE US SHIVER? The wave pattern across the Northern
Hemisphere shows signs of changing next month, and the pattern favors some
of the very cold air near the pole dropping southward into the U.S. Way too
early to be specific, but generally speaking we expect February to be much
colder than January for much of the nation, including the Deep South.

LOTS OF RAIN: Totals across Alabama yesterday included 2.54" at Muscle
Shoals, 2.28" at Munford, 1.89" at Coldwater, 1.72" at Inverness, 1.63" at
Riverchase, 1.56" at Meadowbrook, 1.43" at Moundville, and 1.02" at Jasper.

Birmingham's total for the year (based on data from the Airport) is up to
5.43", meaning we have a surplus of 1.26" since January 1.

ANOTHER SOAKING: It happened overnight and this morning especially over the
north and central portions of the state. It was enough to cause the
Birmingham rainfall total for the month to show an excess of over an inch.
We had become so accustomed to the deficiency word.
The heaviest rain was over the northwest counties of Alabama where flash
flooding occurred during the night. This was mainly in parts of
Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties including the Florence area.

For most of the state it was a very warm Sunday. The temperature soared to
78 in Montgomery. Anniston and Selma had 74, Tuscaloosa 73 and Birmingham
72. That is 20 degrees above normal! It was 77 in Evergreen today.

NOW WHAT? Today's wet weather will be replaced by dry weather for the rest
of the week. Extra bonus will be lots of sunshine. An even extra bonus will
be relatively mild daytime temperatures which should be more help on your
next heating bill. We still do not see any bitter cold weather in the near
future. Even next weekend, highs should be in the lower 60s.

DOWNSIDE: One of our daily readers (and a neighbor) reminded us that we
NEED some real cold weather, otherwise we will be overrun by bugs next
summer. I definitely agree. Maybe we can do that in February. Snuffy Smith
refers to all those as varmints. Gnats, spiders, fleas, wood roaches,
mosquitoes, you name it. I did not see hardly any mosquitoes last summer,
not sure I saw any! It does not take much cold to wipe out the mosquitoes
but the others are much more stubborn.

MOTHER OF ALL BLUE NORTHERS: It happened on this date in 1916 at Browning,
Mont., when the temperature dropped 100 degrees in 24 hours from 44 above
zero to 56 below. I have seen 65-degree drops in Alabama in about 48 hours,
but nothing to compare to that. I still plan to write a story about "blue
northers" on the blog one day this week. They are a legendary term in the
Great Plains, but never a term you will see in a forecast...coldest
temperature in the lower 48 states this morning was 27 below at Gunnison,
Colorado...in Alaska, the coldest was 45 below at Galena...over the weekend,
the temperature dropped as low as 62 below zero at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Had to add another no-no to my Little Miss
Molly list. I had tricked her into letting me take a 30-minute power nap in
my ex-recliner. (Molly seized it by the eminent domain law so now I have to
seek permission from her.) A few seconds later that little 9-pound activist
came strolling from behind the recliner with a dime in her mouth. When I
reclined, coins had rolled out of my pocket into the inner workings of the
recliner. One rolled out on the floor and she found it. She never misses
anything on her hourly inspections. She reminds me of a very efficient night
watchman. I had the horrible thought of "what if" she had swallowed the dime
and stomach surgery needed. I could not take that. So now, it is empty
pockets before reclining..for the first time in a long, long time, we saw
the CC (Community Cat) I did not let Molly see it because I did not want to
lean back on the leash with a 30-degree angle to slow Molly's rocket launch.
Life goes on, even with scares at times.

...Wet Morning...

GOOD MORNING: Well, it turned out positively spring like on Sunday afternoon across Central Alabama. Interesting to watch the tug of war between the warm front and the wedge over East Alabama. At s a.m. it was 58F. It jumped to 68F at 11 a.m. and 74 at 2 p.m. It was 72F at 4 p.m. with a south southeast wind. One hour later, winds had shifted to the east and the temperature dropped to 60F. At the same time, it was 48F in Atlanta. This is the dreaded easterly wedge.

RAIN TO END: A cold front will sweep across Alabama today, pushing all of the rain and the thunderstorms to the east. All but eastern sections should be free from the rain by lunchtime. A little light rain might linger until early afternoon, especially over eastern sections. Brisk northwesterly winds will begin to transport in much cooler air, with temperatures holding steady during the morning before falling back in the afternoon in most locations. Skies will begin to clear tonight, but clouds should keep temperatures in the upper 30s. Readings will fall into the middle 30s over the next couple of nights.

REST OF THE WEEK: It looks like Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be nice days with high pressure in control of our weather. That high pressure will slide east of Alabama on Friday, allowing southerly winds to return. Clouds will also be on the increase by that time. Showers may appear by Saturday, and will become likely by the early morning hours on Sunday. The front will push into Central Alabama and stall. Another low may form on the front on Monday.

CORRECTION: Yesterday, I mentioned the world’s most dramatic temperature rise, 49 degrees F in two minutes from –45F to 4F. It actually occurred in was Spearfish, South Dakota, not North Dakota.

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: Prospect Creek Camp in the Endicott Mountains of northern Alaska recorded the coldest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. with -79.8 degrees F (rounded off to -80 degrees F.) There have been colder unofficial readings, but this is the official reading.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON! Our front pushed northward over much of Central and South Alabama this morning. It was north of Tuscaloosa and Birmingham by late morning. South of the front, partial clearing was underway and temperatures had jumped into the 60s. An area of light to moderate showers was located over West Alabama along the warm front. These showers were pushing northward.

Temperatures will warm into the upper 60s to around 70 in many locations across the area this afternoon. A weak surface low is over southeastern Texas.

This low will become better defined as it moves southeastward tonight, spreading an area of rain and thunderstorms towards Alabama during the overnight hours, crossing the state during the morning hours. A few of these showers and storms could be on the heavy side with decent downpours and maybe some small hail, but no organized severe weather is expected. Showers should end from west to east on Monday, but clearing should be delayed until Monday night.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Temperatures will cool of dramatically Monday night under clearing skies, falling to the middle 30s in most locations with a few readings near or just below freezing in the colder locales. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all look to be nice days, with abundant sunshine and temperatures warming into the lower 60s both days. A weak front will deliver a paltry band of showers to North and Central Alabama Friday night

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: That weak front will settle down into North Alabama and stall. Alabama will then find itself located in the warm sector of a developing low pressure system over the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Showers will be possible across the area on Saturday and showers and thunderstorms will dominate Sunday’s weather.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Wind advisories are in effect for parts of California this afternoon and high wind watches are already posted through Tuesday afternoon. Strong high pressure over southern Nevada is producing the perfect setup for strong Santa Ana winds over the next couple of days. Cold air trapped in the valleys of southeastern West Virginia and along the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Virginia will setup a freezing rain situation tonight and advisories are in effect. A variety of winter weather advisories and winter storm watches are in effect for the Northeast, including parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

THE 49th AND 50TH STATES: Wind chill advisories cover much of southwestern Alaska where north winds of 15-30 mph are expected to drive wind chills into the –50F range. I had the pleasure of flying into Dillingham a few years back for a fishing trip. That small town on the Bering Sea is expecting an overnight low of –16F after a daytime high of –9F. Four to eight inches of snow is expected in Anchorage today, where a snow advisory is in effect. In Hawaii, heavy showers this morning prompted an urban and small stream flood advisory for the island of Oahu.

ON THIS DATE IN 1943: The most dramatic temperature rise in world weather records was recorded at Spearfish, N.D. where the mercury rose 49 degrees from -4 degrees F to 45 degrees above zero in just 2 minutes! That occurred at 7:30 am. At 9 am the temperature was a spring like 54 degrees, but by 9:27 am it had dropped again to -4 degrees F. Plate glass cracked as a result of the wild temperature swings. The amazing swing was the result of cold air pouring into the shallow bowl of a mountain valley where the town is located. The result is that the cold and warm air sloshed back and forth before settling in.

...More Wet Weather Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Wet weather will continue across Alabama for the next forty eight hours thanks to a wavy front stretched across the southern United States. Low pressure developing over eastern Texas this morning will push the front back northward as a warm front today. Showers will be increasing along and ahead of the front as it retreats. Behind the front, the airmass will be sufficiently unstable for the production of showers and even a few thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight as the Texas low moves over us.

START OF THE WEEK: By tomorrow morning, another low pressure system is expected to form and move into Southwest Alabama. As this low passes, a cold front will push across the state. Showers and a few storms will continue during the morning hours, ending fro the west during the day. Northwesterly winds will spread drier and cooler air into Alabama. Skies should clear Monday night and temperatures will drop to near freezing.

REST OF THE WEEK: Dry weather should then prevail through Thursday. The next storm system may bring a chance of showers into Alabama late on Friday into Saturday.

IN THE RECORD BIN: More moldy oldie records fell along the East Coast on Saturday. It has never been warmer in Atlantic City on January 21st when the mercury hit 62F. 64F in Trenton, 50F in Bangor ME, 63F in Central Park, 62F at Dulles Airport in Washington and 64F at Trenton, NJ were all record highs for the date.

ON THIS DATE IN 1922: An unseasonable F4 tornado leveled the northern part of the town of Moundville in Alabama a little after midnight, killing 37 people and injuring 63. The tornado reportedly glowed with a phosphorescent glow. The northern part of the town was destroyed and only one building was left standing. Bodies were blown as far as one half mile. An engineer on a northbound Great Southern train saw the destruction right after it occurred, and backed his train 12 miles in reverse to the town of Akron, where he sent a telegram for help.
