FLOOD WATCH
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL
911 PM CST SAT DEC 30 2006

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI...
AND PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST ALABAMA TONIGHT...

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN CANCELED FOR THE WESTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE...

.A WEAK FRONT ACROSS CENTRAL LOUISIANA WILL MOVE EVER SO SLOWLY EAST
TONIGHT. THE FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE HEART OF THE
FORECAST AREA BY AROUND SUNRISE SUNDAY MORNING. DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR
TRENDS SHOWS THE AREA OF SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS HAS SLOWED
AND BECOME NEARLY STATIONARY FROM SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA INTO SOUTHEAST
MISSISSIPPI AND SOUTHWEST ALABAMA. LATEST FORECASTS CALL FOR A VERY
SLOW MOVEMENT CONTINUING THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE NIGHT. AS A
RESULT...THE THREAT OF EXCESSIVE RAINS CONTINUES OVER SOUTHEAST
MISSISSIPPI AND WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT EASTWARD INTO SOUTHWEST ALABAMA
OVERNIGHT.

DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE WEATHER SYSTEM...THE THREAT OF
EXCESSIVE RAINS INTO THE WESTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE THROUGH THE
REMAINDER OF THE NIGHT HAS DIMINISHED. THUS...THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH
WILL BE CANCELED.

BALDWIN...LOWER MOBILE...UPPER BALDWIN...UPPER MOBILE AND
WASHINGTON. IN SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI...GEORGE...GREENE...

* UNTIL 6 AM CST SUNDAY

* A COLD FRONT ADVANCES VERY SLOWLY EAST ACROSS LOUISIANA TONIGHT.
AHEAD OF THE FRONT...A SHIELD OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO TRAIN OR MOVE ACROSS THE
SAME AREAS TONIGHT. THIS RESULTS IN AN INCREASED RISK OF FLOODING.

* LATEST DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR RAINFALL ESTIMATES SUGGEST THAT 1 TO
LOCALLY 2 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE FALLEN OVER SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI.
THESE RAINS ARE FORECAST TO SLOWLY OVERSPREAD SOUTHWEST ALABAMA
THROUGH THE NIGHT. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS THROUGH 6 AM SUNDAY
MORNING COULD TOTAL 2 TO 4 INCHES IN THE WATCH AREA. THE RAINFALL
AMOUNTS COULD RESULT IN FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS... CREEKS AND
SOME RIVER SYSTEMS LATE TONIGHT. AREAS WITH POOR DRAINAGE WILL
ALSO BE AT AN INCREASED RISK FOR RAPID FLOODING.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS
SITUATION...ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WHEN WATER COVERED ROADS ARE HARDER
TO SEE.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

...Stormy Night Ahead...

Snoopy used to sit on top of his doghouse with his little manual
typewriter working on his novel. It always started with, "It was a
ark and stormy night…" That will work for tonight's forecast here in
North and Central Alabama…

WINDY, STORMS AHEAD: Winds were picking up out there as of early
morning across Alabama. Through tonight, they will average 15-25 mph
with occasional higher gusts, so exercise caution with any activities
that are affected by the wind. It will be mostly cloudy and mild,
with temperatures warming into the upper 60s. The advance guard of
rain and embedded storms was already reaching West Alabama at
mid-morning. Showers and thunderstorms will gradually overspread the
state during the afternoon and evening hours. No real severe weather
activity is expected over Central or North Alabama, although I
wouldn't be surprised to see a few scattered reports of wind damage.
A different story over South and Southwest Alabama, where tornado
watches were already in effect this morning. The active squall line
will likely weaken as it edges into eastern Alabama later tonight.

NEW YEARS EVE: The back edge of the area of rain and storms will be
working across the middle of Alabama during the morning hours, passing
Birmingham by noon and exiting East Alabama by sunset. Skies will
also begin to clear from the west, with some sunshine popping out by
the end of the day. New Years Eve celebrations should be dry and
cooler. Low clouds and widespread fog may form late Sunday night, so
be careful if you are driving home after ringing in 2007.

NEW YEARS DAY AND BEYOND: January 1, 2007 will start with clouds and
fog that should burn off by mid-morning. It will be noticeably
cooler, with a morning low of 41. With a good deal of sunshine, the
mercury will rise into the middle 50s. Tuesday should be the coldest
morning with a low near freezing, followed by a beautiful sunny day.
Wednesday will be partly cloudy as our winds shift around to an
easterly direction. In our progressive pattern, the next storm system
will already be knocking on our door by Thursday. Rain and storms
will overspread the area Thursday night, lasting into Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: The mercury dropped to 10F in Birmingham a cold
high pressure had much of the East in its grip. Tupelo dropped to 7F.
It was the coldest week on record at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A man died when his vehicle plunged through
thin ice near Anoka, MN. The thin ice was the result of unusually
mild temperatures. 7 people had already died because of thin ice
accidents across the upper Midwest. The Minnesota Department of
Transportation reports that ice must be 12-15 inches thick to safely
support a truck, 8-12 inches to support a car, 5 inches to support a
snowmobile and 4 inches thick to support a person.

.....Lots of Rain Over The Weekend......

CLEARING AND COOLER FOR NEW YEAR'S DAY: It is difficult to believe
that good old 2006 is about to leave us. Time for New Year's
Resolutions. I have a bunch of them and they are mostly recycled from
previous years. Again this year, I am going to jettison Pop Tarts and
doughnuts. That is unimportant at the moment. Our main concern is a
big bunch of rain expected late in the weekend. This is a big complex
storm system covering many states. When that happens, it is often that
the further east the storm goes, the more adjustments are needed in
the timing. That has happened to us several times in the last few
days. Now we think the latest time window for our worst weather will
be after midnight Saturday night and through at least mid morning
Sunday. During that time frame, very heavy amounts of rain may occur
with many communities getting 1 to 2 inches. There is a big advantage
when those storms roll through at that late hour. The threat of severe
thunderstorms is much less. In fact, we do not think we will have any
severe, although it is not an absolute. By Sunday night, the weather
should quiet down. The outlook for a fresh start on Monday, January 1
is for clearing, breezy and cooler weather with highs near 60. it will
drop to near freezing Tuesday morning, however we do not see any
outbreak of bitter cold air in the near future.

THE WINTER OF BIG SNOW? Is that what is unfolding for Denver? The
answer we do not know. There was a case back in 1830 when 30 inches
of snow buried Peoria and 36 in Kansas City on December 29. It began
the winter of deep snow. That type weather dominated that winter and
there was much hardship to pioneers on the Plains. Denver is now
almost paralyzed from the second big snowstorm in about a week.
According to press reports, the Colorado governor has declared a state
of emergency in Colorado. We want to give you a few spot reports from
early this afternoon. La Veta Pass in South Central Colorado
visibility only ½ mile and snow with thunder and lightning. Widespread
snow continues east of the mountains out on the Plains. Wolf Creek
Pass has 12 degrees with winds gusting to 44 mph and a wind chill of
11 below. The USA low this morning was 17 below in the west edge of
Yellowstone National Park. In Alaska, it was 41 below at Nuiqsut. Now
78 inches of snow on the ground at Whittier, Alaska.

COTTON BOWL WEATHER: Dallas is under a Tornado Watch this afternoon.
In fact, there is a moderate risk of severe weather over part of East
Texas. However, by Monday when Auburn meets Nebraska in a 10:30 a.m.
kickoff, it should be mostly sunny and cool with about 44 at kickoff
and warming to the mid 50s by the final whistle.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Pulled a fast one on Little Miss Molly
this morning. I needed a power nap badly. I caught her eating some
breakfast and I seized my ex-recliner for my power nap. As soon as she
discovered it, she hopped up on the footrest and snuggled tightly
against my leg for two hours. When I got up, she recaptured the
recliner within 3 seconds. She thinks she owns it. Dennis Altizer, our
Minister of Music at Huffman Baptist Church, has a cat named Sugar
Baby, but he has nicknamed her Computer Cat. She walked across the
computer mouse and sent an e-mail to his brother in Holland before he
had time to proofread it. When his brother tried to call the number
he had sent, the area code was off by one digit. Dennis had to explain
that Sugar Baby sent it before proofing. Life goes on. Our cats and
dogs make it more enjoyable.

....Another Dry Day Friday.....

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS BECOMING NUMEROUS SATURDAY NIGHT: Bright
blue sky across Alabama today, which holds little hint of the changing
weather we will experience before the weekend is over. Let's get right
to the point on the time window for the worst weather. It still looks
like Saturday night and into about mid morning Sunday. During that
time, showers and thunderstorms will be numerous, including some
strong storms. They will also be dumping heavy rain. As much as 2
inches can be expected across Central Alabama. One bit of good news in
all of this, because of a number of factors, the threat of severe
thunderstorms for Saturday night has lessened. We cannot rule it out,
but it appears that any risk of severe would be in the extreme SW part
of the state.
An intense low pressure area will be centered near Oklahoma City by
Saturday morning. After that, it will curve northeastward into East
Kansas. A big upper air low was centered over Arizona today. That
feature is calling the shots on this big storm system. Often that will
slow down the overall progression, so that is why we will not get our
worst weather until Saturday night. Finally for New Year's Day, it
will be breezy and cooler, but clouds may hang around most of the day.
Low temperatures across Alabama this morning were in the mid and
upper 20s in most of the valleys and in the lower 30s elsewhere.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Monday, Auburn meets
Nebraska. It is an early game with a kick off around 10:30. It should
be partly sunny and cool with about 44 degrees at kick off and warming
to about 52 before the game is over.
OUR WONDERFUL WORLD OF WEATHER: Denver is going to get blasted again
by a major snowstorm and they will likely get some big drifts. The NWS
thinks that about 10-20 inches of snow will accumulate, but always in
big storms like this, some places get a lot more. The snow was already
underway this afternoon and will become heavy by tonight. Cheyenne is
expecting possibly a foot also. This afternoon, almost white-out
conditions were reported on the mountain passes in Colorado with
temperatures in the teens and winds as high as 46 mph. The USA low
this morning was zero at Crane Lake, Minnesota and Presque Isle,
Maine. In Alaska, it was a bitter 45 below zero at Chandalar Lake.
Whittier, Alaska has 77 inches of snow on the ground and there is 28
inches on St. Paul Island and in Valdez. The wind chill was close to

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is still sleep
deprived and so is her primary owner. Actually I should be the one who
should be complaining most to lack of sleep, but I am used to that.
Strangely enough, Little Miss Molly has not even asked for a ballgame
in several days. I have been so busy, she just gave up. I will get
back in the routine and I hope to spend more time with her in 2007
than ever. She is good medicine. Playing with her is somewhat like
eating a valium sandwich. I have never had that medicine, but I
understand it is a sedative. I am certainly not making fun of it,
because I know some people need it. I am too silly and wacky to get
depressed. No more Pop Tarts till Thanksgiving. JBE

...Strong Storms This Weekend...

It's a bit frosty out there on this late December morning. That is
the last time that we will see freezing temperatures at least for a
few days. A weekend storm system will bring the possibility of severe
weather Saturday night along with colder conditions behind the front
that will bring the storms.

TODAY AND FRIDAY: Today will be partly cloudy with mild temperatures
near 60 degrees. Readings tonight will be milder, falling only into
the lower 40s. Skies will become cloudy by morning. Our next weather
maker has slowed down a bit, and will leave us with a dry day
tomorrow, save a slight chance of a shower.

SATURDAY ACTION: A dynamic storm system will bring a chance of
severe weather to Alabama Saturday night. The primary threat will be
damaging winds in association with a strong squall line. But
tornadoes will be possible also. Instability will be the primary
questions, but as is often the case, wind shear will be strong. It
will be a system that we will have to monitor carefully.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: A large upper level low will keep us mostly
cloudy and cool on Sunday and Monday. Disturbances rotating around the
upper low may leads to a little light rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama takes on Oklahoma State in the
Independence Bowl at Shreveport this afternoon. There is a slight
chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the game. Temperatures will
peak near 68 around kickoff.. In Dallas, Auburn meets Nebraska in the
Cotton Bowl on January 1. Dry, cool weather is expected with a high
near 52.

ANOTHER DENVER BLIZZARD: The December 20-21 snowstorm in the Denver
area dumped 20.7 inches of snow on DIA, closing the Airport for 48
hours. This was enough to rank 7th on the list of all time Denver
snowstorms. Now, another winter storm is threatening to bring more
tremendous snowfall amounts to the foothills. As much as 48 inches
fell at Hourglass Reservoir in Larimer County. Most locations may
pick up well in excess of 12 inches of snow from this second system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: One passenger was killed and 63 injured aboard
a United Airlines 747 flying from Tokyo to Honolulu when the aircraft
encountered clear air turbulence. Clear air turbulence is very hard
to predict and often strikes with little warning. It usually occurs
around the edges of the Jet Stream and near mountain ranges. It is
like a big pothole in the sky, shaking planes violently and often
causing them to drop large distances. Over 100 people are injured in
turbulence related incidents in the U.S. each year, a very small
amount considering there are 23,600 commercial flights each day, but
injuries can still be serious. Only one plane crash of a commercial
liner has been reported in the past 40 years due to turbulence.

...Moderating Temperatures...

Tuesday was a chilly, gray day across Alabama. The mercury struggled
to reach 40 at the Birmingham Airport, Anniston and Tuscaloosa. It
never made it at Vinemont. But things will be getting better today.
With a return of sunshine, temperatures will warm into the lower 50s
across the area. Tonight will be another chilly one, but not
unreasonably so, with lows dropping to near freezing. It is December
after all. It will feel definitely milder tomorrow as our winds shift
around to the southeast around retreating high pressure. Those
shifting winds are a sign of changes to come.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: Clouds will be on the increase tomorrow night
and should be completely cloudy by Friday morning. Low pressure will
develop over the Texas Panhandle on Thursday and start the trek to the
northeast. A steep pressure gradient will develop between the fairly
strong low and the stubborn high pressure to the east of us, setting
up an efficient transport of relatively warm and moist air back into
the state. Showers may reach western sections of the state by early
Friday morning along and ahead of an advancing warm front. There
could be a few elevated storms involved. It will be increasingly
windy on Friday, with winds averaging up to 15-25 and gusting higher.
A line of strong storms will advance across Mississippi Friday
afternoon, reaching western Alabama during the late night hours.
There is a chance of severe weather with this system, even though the
nighttime arrival will be in our favor.

WEEKEND: Thunderstorms will sweep quickly east, exiting into Georgia
by mid-morning. Some temporary clearing will set in during the dry
with a healthy dry slot, but clouds should wrap back in late in the
day and be with us on Sunday. Cloudy, cold and raw conditions are all
the rage this season it seems and Sunday will be a trademark raw day.
There could be a little light rain or drizzle over northern sections,
and with an upper low close by, we will watch for a little colder
atmosphere and the chance of a few flakes of that s word, but don't
get your hopes up. It looks like all the local New Years Eve
celebrations will be dry, but chilly.

POST WEEKEND: It looks like high pressure will be the weather
watchword as we head into the first week of the New Year. Look for
another big rainmaker around the 7th or 8th of January.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An unusual summer storm packing winds of
cyclone magnitude struck the 115 sailboats of the famed Sydney to
Hobart yacht race. Six sailors died and 55 had to be rescued in a
heroic air and sea effort that included night helicopter sorties to
pull people out of the water. Storm warnings had been issued for the
race participants, but pressure caused officials to allow the race to
begin on time. Computer models did not have the resolution to show
the full intensity of the storm's hurricane force winds and 30 foot
seas. Families of the victims blamed the meteorologists and race
officials for not intervening.

SUNSHINE RETURNS TOMORROW: We were blessed with much lighter winds
today, but still the weather was not fit for dogs, cats, birds or gift
returners. The old thermometer struggled all day long and did not want
to move. However, most areas had 40s this afternoon. A nice thick
blanket of clouds prevented it from getting any warmer. Those clouds
will break up tonight and it should be clear by late tonight and
tomorrow morning. This will permit the temperature to drop to near 28.
This is going to be one of those nights when the low could either be
26 or 35 depending on how stubborn the clouds hang on. Look for mostly
sunshine Wednesday and Thursday, although clouds will increase
Thursday night. A warming trend starts tomorrow.

A FOCUS ON THE WEEKEND: Everything is not sealed in stone yet, but we
want to give you a preliminary heads up for what could happen this
weekend. By Friday morning, another major low pressure area will be
scrambling to get itself together in the Central Plains. By Saturday
morning, the intense low will be near Tulsa with a cold front swinging
southward to near New Orleans. The pressure gradient will be sharp
enough to give us some strong south winds Saturday, even with no
thunderstorms. However, it looks like a line of possibly intense
thunderstorms could cross Central Alabama Saturday morning. The Storm
Prediction Center has an outlook for possible severe weather Friday
and Saturday and possibly into Sunday all the way from East Texas and
SE Oklahoma eastward to the Georgia-South Carolina coast. This
includes all of Alabama and nearby states.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A bit too early to give you a forecast for the
Cotton Bowl on January 1, which features Auburn and Nebraska, but we
can give you a forecast for Thursday's Independence Bowl in Shreveport
between Alabama and Oklahoma State. There will be a slight chance of
showers and thunderstorms during the game. The temperature should peak
at about 66. The kickoff is at 3:30.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 11 below zero at Antero Reservoir Colorado was
the coldest in the lower 48…it was 33 below at Huslia,
Alaska…interesting to note that one of the stations that we watch
closely in winter in the Yukon of NW Canada, was reporting a
relatively mild 16 above zero this afternoon.. Denver still has 15
inches of snow on the ground and Ft. Collins 13 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor Little Miss Molly. She is still
recovering from a rash of company and more grandkids will be here
shortly. She is truly a creature of habit. She does not like for her
routine to be disrupted. I believe she has taken a time-management
course, doggie version. I have not had a ball game with her in five
days. Please don't tell her majority owner that I bootlegged one
sausage ball to Molly. She absolutely loves them. She smacked her lips
for 15 minutes. I had to look away. I could not look her in the eye
because she wanted more. Life goes on

...Happy Boxing Day...

What the heck is Boxing Day? There are numerous stories as to the
origin of the name. Most of the stories relate to Christmas bonuses.
Employers would put coins or money in boxes on the day after Christmas
for their employees. In some places, the bonus might take the form of
food or other goods, that were boxed up and distributed on December
26th. Another explanation is that Christmas was a time of over
indulgence for some wealthy families, and disputes would inevitably
arise. Boxing matches often settled these disagreements, hence the
name. Whatever the source, Boxing Day refers to the day after
Christmas.

WEATHER IN A WORD… Miserable. That would be an apt description for
today's weather across North and Central Alabama. Cloudy, cold and
breezy, with a few sprinkles or snow flurries early. The mercury will
actually continue falling until mid-morning, and then only recovering
into the lower or middle 40s with a chill north wind. Skies may
remain cloudy all day , with clearing not setting in until very late
this afternoon or this evening. Fair skies and diminishing winds will
allow temperatures to drop to just below freezing.

MIDWEEK MODERATION: Wednesday should dawn fair and cool, with
temperatures near normal for this time of year, meaning highs in the
lower 50s. High pressure will slide east of us on Thursday, allowing
for a nice return southerly flow of Gulf moisture, but we should enjoy
a good deal of sunshine still. Temperatures will edge back up to
around 60. Clouds will be on the increase overnight.

LATE WEEK STORM: By Friday morning, low pressure will be spinning up
over southeastern Oklahoma, heading northeast. A strong southerly
flow will give us increasing moisture and instability as a cold front
approaches from the west. Showers and storms will break out by late
in the day. A squall line will move through the state on Saturday.
There is a chance that we will deal with severe weather with this
system, so stay tuned…

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records its
greatest snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central
Park received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches
fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not accompanied by strong
winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a
standstill. Twenty seven deaths occurred as a result of the storm.
Snow removal of the estimated ten million tons of snow cost over $8
million. Nineteen inches of snow fell in just six hours at White
Plains, New York.

TWO YEARS AGO TODAY: Early on the morning of December 26, 2004, the
idyllic calm of a peaceful Southeast Asian morning was shattered by
one of the deadliest tsunamis in World history. More in today's

Happy Boxing Day .....

Showers and storms will break out by late

...Santa Will Be Wet...

A LOT COLDER TONIGHT AND TUESDAY: Not the most pleasant Christmas
Day across Alabama thanks to a strong low pressure system that moved
NE out of the Gulf of Mexico. It crossed NE Mississippi and NW Alabama
before noon and was moving into Kentucky this afternoon. Because of
the low, it has been quite windy across the state today, especially on
the ridges. We have seen gusts as high as 46 mph. Even down in the
valleys, there were frequent gusts to around 30. Warm air streaming
north from the Gulf of Mexico sent the old thermometer soaring well
into the 60s over SE Alabama this afternoon. Meanwhile, colder air was
spreading into West Alabama behind the low. It will get progressively
colder tonight and Tuesday. By daybreak, look for mid and upper 30s
across the north half of the state.
SNOW CHANCES: We might as well face that question early in the
story. We do not foresee any problems with snow here in Alabama.
However, scattered light rain may become mixed with or change over to
light snow toward daybreak, but there should not be any accumulation.
We also may see some flurries through much of Tuesday morning. Again,
no problems expected. By Wednesday, sunshine returns and there will be
a nice warm up Wednesday and Thursday. Our coldest temperatures should
be about 28 Wednesday morning, but it will be 60 or higher Thursday
and Friday. I am holding in my never-nicotine-stained hands (but often
caffeine stained) an interesting weather chart for next Friday and
Saturday. It looks like one of the strongest low pressure systems so
far this season will start developing over West Texas Thursday morning
and intensifying as it moves to Oklahoma and North Texas Friday and
into Missouri by Saturday morning. This has the potential to pull much
moisture northward from my old friend, the Gulf of Mexico. This could
be quite a stormy situation. For us toward the end of the week.
OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A number of tornado watches today along the
coastal sections of the Carolinas, Georgia and a big part of the
Florida Peninsula. A tornado touched down on the Tampa Bay Golf and
Country Club at midday. At the country club, 15 to 20 homes were
severely damage and 15 additional homes had lesser damage…two persons
were injured near San Antonio in Pasco County…Colorado is still
heavily covered by snow. Today there was still 16 inches on the ground
at Castle Rock on I-25 between Colorado Springs and Denver and 28
inches NE of Castle Rock. There was 16 inches at Greeley. Further
westward in the mountains, Bailey had 30 inches…coldest temperatures
in the USA this morning was 21 below zero at Antero Reservoir in
North-Central Colorado.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal is in a recovery
mode from 5 days of in-house company, including grandkids and a guest
dog. She got very little rest and spent much of the time trying to
stay out of the way. The last company left late yesterday. She slept 9
hours overnight and additional 5 hours today. Hope you saw that great
story in this morning's Birmingham News about Louie, who is a boxer
dog that was missing 13 monthsfrom his Logan Martin home. He was
discovered on a web site in an animal shelter. They did not tell their
son Madison they found Louie and had planned to have a bow on him and
bring him into the house this morning after he had opened all of his
presents. I would have given anything to have been a fly in the
Christmas tree to see his reaction! Merry Christmas and life goes on.
–J B Elliott.

...Merry Christmas...

Christmas 2006 will be remembered as a wet one across much of Alabama.
Low pressure has been lifting northward across Alabama during the
overnight hours, accompanied by a soaking rain. Now our attention
turns to an upper level low that will rotate across the state
overnight tonight. The cold air associated with the upper low has the
potential to produce some wintry precipitation.

NO WHITE CHRISTMAS, BUT A WHITE BOXING DAY? December 26th is Boxing
Day. But there is little chance little chance of enough snow to make
it white. There will be a bit of a break in the rain today before
some residual moisture wraps around the back side of the low. This
means a chance of light rain continuing through tonight into early
Tuesday. It will be a bit breezy. By midnight tonight, the
atmosphere still may become cold enough for any light rain to mix with
or changeover to light snow across North and perhaps Central Alabama.
Wouldn't that be cool? But the questions are, how much moisture will
there be and will the cold air aloft materialize. If all that comes
together and we get some snow, it will probably melt anyway, since
surface temperatures will be above freezing. So, there could be some
accumulation on grassy areas and automobiles in areas that do get
snow, but no road problems are expected. A few snow flurries could
persist into Tuesday morning, but they should be short-lived.

REST OF THE WEEK: Skies should clear late in the day on Tuesday
with clear and cold conditions Tuesday night. High pressure will
build directly overhead on Wednesday, giving us fine weather. By
Thursday, this high will be over the Carolinas, allowing for return
flow of moisture from the south and clouds will be on the increase by
late in the day. Developing low pressure will be over Southeast Texas
by early Friday morning, heading northeast as it intensifies. Rain
will enter the area Friday afternoon. Rain and thunderstorms will be
widespread Friday night. It looks like the rainfall could be very
heavy. And…it looks like there could be a severe weather event for
the Deep South and Gulf Coast.

NEW YEARS: Rain should end Saturday night, with wraparound moisture
making for lots of clouds and light rain for Sunday, New Years Eve
day. The first of January should feature clearing skies and
seasonably cool temperatures.

ON THIS DATE TWO YEARS AGO: It actually snowed in New Orleans and
Southeast Louisiana. It was the only time since records began in 1852
that the Crescent City enjoyed a White Christmas. Now, I am told by
residents of Southeast Louisiana that it always snowed the winter
before major hurricanes. We all know what happened in August 2005.
It would be interesting to check out their theory, although it is most
certainly a coincidence.

...Santa Will Be Wet...

Santa will need his wet weather gear tonight as he makes the rounds
across North and Central Alabama. Low pressure moving out of the Gulf
will bring us increasing rain chances by mid-afternoon, continuing
through the overnight hours and into early Christmas Day.

CHRISTMAS STORM SYSTEM: Cloudiness increased rapidly during the
overnight hours with mostly gray skies around to greet the day on this
Christmas Eve. There were just a few peeks of sunshine around my
house this morning. Hopefully you caught one. We may not see much of
the yellow orb until Tuesday. Low pressure is off the Texas Coast
with a warm front draped along the Gulf coast. This warm front will
move northward tonight as the low moves northeast and this means
increasing rain chances for us. The rain should start to show up on
local radars by late afternoon and build into a soaking rain
overnight. Rainfall amounts could average one to inches by noon
tomorrow. Today's highs will top out around 60 degrees, with middle
40s tonight. Wind chimes across the area will welcome Santa as
eastern winds pick up to 8-16 mph tonight ahead of the low. Hopefully
there won't be too many missed approaches on area rooftops tonight…

CHRISTMAS DAY: Rain should diminish during the morning, but some
light showers will continue through the day on Christmas Day on the
backside of our low as it exits to the northeast. We are still
expecting a strong upper trough to rotate across the area Christmas
night. As it does, the cold air affiliated with this system will cool
the atmosphere sufficiently to allow some residual moisture to mix
with and eventually change over to a little light snow from the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston areas northward. The best chance
for this to occur will be after midnight tomorrow night. Snow fans
will likely be disappointed, as surface temperatures will remain too
warm for significant accumulation.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Clouds and perhaps a few snow flurries will continue
into Tuesday morning, with clearing skies later in the day. Colder
air will follow the system, with highs on Tuesday limited to the
middle 40s. Tuesday night will be the coldest night of the week, as
the mercury drops into the upper 20s. Wednesday should be a nice day
with high pressure overhead and temperatures that are near normal for
December. By Thursday, our winds will turn back to the southeast in
response to the retreating high pressure cell and a developing low to
our west. This storm system will bring increasing clouds on Friday
and increasing rain chances on Saturday, with a soaking rain Saturday
night into New Years Eve, Sunday. There could be thunderstorms
involved.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: 45F at Miami FL shattered their previous
record low for the date by 20 degrees. The low at Key West FL fell to
44F, to establish their all-time record low. Huntsville AL dropped to
1F. In Birmingham, we hit 4F.
