...Fall Back Tonight...

Everyone gets an extra hour of sleep tonight as Daylight Savings Time
officially comes to an end. Don't forget to set your clocks back an
hour before you retire tonight.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: The morning dawned clear and cool across
North and Central Alabama on this Saturday. Meridianville was the
state's cool spot, with a morning reading of 34F. Under sunny skies
today, afternoon readings will top out in the lower 70s. Tonight will
be clear and chilly with frost possible in the colder locations.
Tomorrow may be a degree or two cooler than today as cool air
continues to flow in on northerly winds. Things will begin to change
tomorrow night as winds shift around to the southwest ahead of an
approaching trough. This will be our next weather maker, bringing a
chance of showers late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Rainfall
amounts will be light. When the front passes through Tuesday morning,
it will signal a change to much colder, with widespread lows in the
30s Wednesday and Thursday morning, and a freeze is likely in colder
locations. Temperatures on Tuesday will hover in the 50s, with 40s
not of the question during the day.

EXTRATROPICAL STORM NOEL: The low that was Hurricane Noel is racing
north northeast toward Nova Scotia. High winds, coastal flooding and
heavy rains will plague New England through tonight. Wind gusts will
reach hurricane force. OOTBALL WEATHER: Tennessee Tech will be at
Auburn for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff today. Expect sunny skies and low
humidity with temperatures at kickoff in the middle 70s, falling back
into the 60s during the contest. The Bengal Tigers of LSU travel to
Tuscaloosa for a key SEC West matchup at 4 p.m. The weather should be
ideal, with temperatures falling out of the 70s through the 60s under
clear skies. Winds will be light. A 6 p.m. kickoff at Birmingham's
Legion Field as UAB entertains Southern Miss. Game temperatures will
be falling from the 60s into the 50s under a crystal clear sky. The
most interesting weather nationally in this week 10 of college
football with be at Boston College, where extratropical storm Noel
will bring very heavy rain and high winds during the game. Will be a
fun game to watch on ABC3340 tonight.

STORM ALERT XTREME: One week from today, we will all be at the BJCC
for our annual storm spotter training. Brian Peters will present
basic and advanced storm spotting classes. Spotters are critical in
providing ground truth to forecasters in severe weather situations.
Even if you aren't interested in being a formal spotter, you will
learn to read important sky signs that could save you or your family
when severe weather threatens.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Snow flurries fell in Brownsville, Texas. It
was the first time snowflakes had fallen in the month of November
since 1976. There were no measurable accumulations in either event in
Brownsville. The last measurable snow in Brownsville was way back in
February 1895 when the local paper reported 5 inches on the ground.
This broke the old record of three inches which had occurred back in
about the 1860s. Brownsville did enjoy a White Christmas in 2004 as
1.5 inches of snow fell during the early morning hours on December 25th.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Pinson established a new record high for the
date with a temperature of 87F. Other locations in the Heart of Dixie
tied their record highs that day, including Birmingham (84F), Anniston
(84F), and Montgomery (85F).

...Fall Back Tonight...

If you are like me, half of the clocks in your life have
the wrong time on them thanks to the shifted Daylight Savings Time
change. I think this has been bigger than the Y2K thingee. Well, at
least all those errant clocks will be back to correct time by early
Sunday morning. Just make sure any clocks that require human
intervention are moved back one hour when you go to bed tonight, or
you will be late Sunday morning.

DRY WEEKEND: Drier, relatively cool air is flowing into
Alabama today and will continue through tomorrow. This means clear
skies, cool overnight temperatures and a fairly high fire danger.
Conditions will not be ideal for wildfires, but you could say they
will be conducive. A few spots probably saw a little light frost this
morning. It could happen in the colder spots again tomorrow morning.
Moisture levels will start to come up Sunday night as our winds start
to turn around to the southwest ahead of the next trough.

MONDAY NIGHT FRONT: Those moisture levels will continue
to rise on Monday ahead of a strong cold front that will push a band
of showers through the state. Best rain chances will be late Monday
night. Rainfall amounts will be light, unfortunately. Tuesday will
feature strong northerly winds and very chilly conditions. Readings
may not get out of the 40s in places like Cullman. Then get ready for
the coldest air so far this season Wednesday and Thursday morning,
when frost will be widespread and several spots will reach freezing.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tennessee Tech will be at Auburn for
a 1:30 p.m. kickoff today. Expect sunny skies and low humidity with
temperatures at kickoff in the middle 70s, falling back into the 60s
during the contest. The Bengal Tigers of LSU travel to Tuscaloosa for
a key SEC West matchup at 4 p.m. The weather should be ideal, with
temperatures falling out of the 70s through the 60s under clear
skies. Winds will be light. A 6 p.m. kickoff at Birmingham's Legion
Field as UAB entertains Southern Miss. Game temperatures will be
falling from the 60s into the 50s under a crystal clear sky.

NOEL: The National Hurricane Center wrote the last
advisory on Hurricane Noel last night as the storm made the
transformation from tropical to extratropical
cyclone. But that doesn't make this one any less dangerous. In fact,
there are some comparisons to 1991's Perfect Storm. The storm
formerly known as Noel raced past the Outer Banks overnight, passing
about 250 miles east of Cape Hatteras. It will deepen rapidly over
the next 24 hours, reaching the equivalent pressure of a Category
Three hurricane. It will pass about sixty miles offshore of Nantucket
and Cape Cod this evening.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Dense fog, slick roads and
speeding contributed to two chain reaction pileups on the southbound
710, or Long Beach Freeway in Los Angeles on a Sunday morning. Forty
one people were hurt, including nine seriously, as an unbelievable 198
cars were involved in the accidents that stretched over a mile. The
highway was closed for hours. California Highway Patrol officers
reported that it was the worst fog they had ever seen in the area,
with visibilities limited to one hundred feet. The fog was more
reminiscent of the terrible fogs of California's Central Valley area.

ALABAMA DISCUSSION: And it sounds very much like the discussion from
yesterday. It looks like a model weekend, if we can forget the
drought. It should be mostly clear with cool mornings and with
afternoon highs near or slightly above 70. A fresh supply of cooler
air will move in over the weekend. We are calling for the average low
across Central Alabama to be around 38 when you get up Sunday morning
with your extra hour of sleep. That means some scattered light frost
in the valley locations and we will undoubtedly hear of some low
temperatures around 34 or 35 in the NE Alabama valleys.

A warm up Monday in advance of still another cold front late Monday
night and Tuesday. A narrow band of light showers may move into NW
Alabama Monday night with the new front and linger for a brief time
Tuesday morning across Central Alabama. Not enough rain to rouse the
least bit of excitement.

THE OLD ALARM CLOCK: If you go to bed at 10:00 Saturday night, reset
your clock to 9:00 p.m. and you will be on time Sunday morning. It is
the old "fall back" and "spring forward" instruction. I am glad to see
CST come back, because the weather world operates on Universal time.
This gives us an extra hour to look at raw data and models, fuss with
it a bit, and come up with a forecast.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Early this afternoon, a weather buoy near the North
Carolina coast at Diamond Shoals was reporting a north wind gusting to
52 miles an hour with 14-foot waves. Blame that on Hurricane Noel who
was centered over 400 miles SSE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He
was moving at 17 with sustained winds to 80 mph, but he was losing his
tropical characteristics. Everyone from the North Carolina coast all
the way through New England should pay close attention. He may dump as
much as 6 inches of rain over Eastern New England and wind gusts along
the Massachusetts coast could approach 70 mph Saturday and Saturday
night.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Hard to beat for this weekend's games. Excellent
hot chocolate weather for tonight's high school games. Clear with near
60 at kick off quickly falling into the 50s. In college football,
Tennessee Tech will be at Auburn Saturday afternoon for a 1:30 kick
off. Clear with low humidity, about 74 at kick off and falling into
the 60s the second half. LSU will be at Tuscaloosa for a 4:00 game
with Alabama. Latest reports indicate about 50 million people will be
there. Perfect weather, 70 at kick off and about 58 at the final
whistle. Southern Mississippi will be in Birmingham to play UAB at
6:00. Clear with light winds. It will already be down to about 60 at
kick off and about 52 at the end of the game.

THE ALABAMA DROUGHT: You can bet your boots it is still with us and
will probably be around a long time. The only bit of good news is that
37% of the state is now under the D4 (worst drought category) as
compared to 64% a week ago. The D4 now extends generally east of I-65
and from about Montgomery and Troy northward. Parts of Mobile and
Baldwin Counties are now without a drought.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Seems like Little Miss Molly is still a
bit pooped from her Halloween extravaganza. Autumn is Molly's
favorite season of the year like her minority owner. She loves to
bounce around in the leaves along the walking track, especially under
the sassafras tree, which dumps thousands of big leaves onto the edge
of the track. Lots of ballgames in the last 24 hours. Life goes on.....

...Clear Through the Weekend...

DRY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A fresh supply of cool, dry air moved into
Alabama last night, meaning the dry spell will continue through the
weekend and most of next week. Today will be the sixth consecutive day
without a drop of rain for most of the state.
Our forecast package will highlight sunny pleasant days and clear,
chilly nights through Sunday. Afternoon highs will be in the 68 to 72
degree range, while lows will be well down in the 40s. Some of the
colder valleys across North Alabama might reach the upper 30s early
Sunday with some scattered frost.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No complaints from coaches, players, officials and
fans. Clear for all the games this weekend. For high school games
tonight, the temperature will be near 60 at kick off and dropping into
the 50s. Auburn has homecoming hosting Tennessee Tech at 1:30 tomorrow
at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Low humidity, 72 at kick off, 60s during the
second half. LSU will be in Tuscaloosa for a 4:00 p.m. kick off with
Alabama. Should be about 68 when foot meets leather for the first time
and 58 at the final whistle. Southern Miss will be at Legion Field
playing at 6:00 p.m. 65 at kick off, 53 in the fourth quarter.

NEXT WEEK: Another dry cold front will pass through Alabama on
Tuesday; like yesterday's front we might see a few scattered clouds
and a breezy afternoon, but the air is simply too dry for any
significant chance of rain. Following that front will be the coldest
air so far this season. At this time it looks like we won't get out of
the 50s on Wednesday, despite maximum sunshine, and by early Thursday
morning (November 8), temperatures should be well down in the 30s with
a good chance of widespread frost. Freezing temperatures seem likely
for the colder valleys across North Alabama early Thursday.

NOEL NOW A HURRICANE: Noel reached minimum hurricane strength last
night as it pulled away from the Bahamas. Noel will move at a faster
forward speed today to the north, and will lose tropical
characteristics as it becomes more of a cold core, North Atlantic type
storm. It will be close enough for some wind and rain over Cape Cod
tomorrow night. The death toll from Noel has risen to 107; most of
those fatalities came in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where
severe flooding was widespread.

EXTREMES: The warmest spot in Alabama yesterday was Dothan with 82.
Hottest place in the nation was Thermal, CA with 92. Coldest place in
the nation yesterday morning was Beaver, Alaska with -3.

WANT TO BE A STORM SPOTTER? Don't forget, our annual storm training
session called Storm Alert Xtreme is on Saturday November 10 at the
BJCC, in association with the Alabama International Auto Show. No
admission for our weather event, and you get in the car show at no
cost as well. See the blog (alabamawx.com) for the complete agenda.

A MODEL WEEKEND: I sure do hate to throw out these nice weather
adjectives every day when we are in the midst of the worst drought in
hundreds of moons. Under normal conditions, even the Central Alabama
Chamber of Commerce would be throwing a street party with this kind of
weather. As we have said all week, might as well enjoy it, because
there is nothing we can do to change it. Another front was moving
across the state this afternoon accompanied by some scattered clouds
but no rain. It will be reinforcing our supply of very dry air. This
will permit night temperatures to be chilly into early next week and
highs will back off to near 70 through Sunday. Still another cold
front will reach Central Alabama early next week, about Monday night
or Tuesday. There is the remotest chance of a few light showers with
that system and then some colder temperatures in the middle of next
week, with some 30s at night.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The National Hurricane Center cancelled the
tropical storm warning for the lower east coast of Florida early this
afternoon. This was because Noel turned more to the right and was
moving away from the coast. The center was passing near Nassau in the
Bahamas. He was moving NNE at 14 mph and should go faster forward in
the next 24 hours. Sustained winds were 65 mph and he could grow
stronger. As much as 18 inches of rain may fall in the Bahamas. News
reports indicate some entire small towns were washed away in the
Dominican Republic and Haiti with thousands of homes destroyed and at
least 100 fatalities.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No complaints from coaches, players, officials and
fans. Clear for all the games this weekend. For high school games
Friday night, near 60 at kick off and dropping into the 50s. Auburn
has homecoming hosting Tennessee Tech at 1:30 Saturday. Low humidity,
72 at kick off, 60s during the second half. LSU will be in Tuscaloosa
for a 4:00 p.m. kick off with Alabama. Should be about 68 when foot
meets leather for the first time and 58 at the final whistle. Southern
Miss will be at Legion Field playing at 6:00 p.m. 65 at kick off, 53
in the fourth quarter.

MISCELLANEOUS: Bunches of trick or treaters last night—the most I
have seen. Great weather! Cold temperatures this morning 11 at Big
Piney in a nice valley in Western Wyoming plus one above at Kivaina,
Alaska. We can always find a few pleasant temperatures in the valleys
of NE Alabama where it was 44 in the DeSoto State Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Halloween and Little Miss Molly were
custom made for each other. She had more fun last night than high
school kids on prom night. Trick or treaters rang our doorbell about
25 times. Regardless of where Molly was in the house, she raced to the
front door at seemingly 40 mph running between our legs, she would
stand on her hind legs and paw at the glass to see who was at the
door. A lot of the kids, as soon as they got their treat, would pause
and give Miss Molly a head rub. Her little tail was wagging so fast I
was afraid it was going to drop off. She escaped briefly when we
opened the door once, shooting out of the house like a cannonball and
seemingly headed for Cattanooga. It was a short-lived freedom, but she
had a ball in those few seconds. After the last treater, she curled up
on the footrest of my recliner right against my leg. She got lots of
loving. Life goes on......

===================================================================

A FRESH SUPPLY OF DRIER AIR: A cold front will pass through Alabama
today; often than can mean showers and thunderstorms this time of the
year, but with hardly any moisture to work with, we will keep the
forecast dry. A few scattered clouds will show up, and winds will
increase out of the north this afternoon, but otherwise most folks
won't really know a front is in the neighborhood. A new shot of cooler
and drier air will roll into Alabama late this afternoon and tonight,
and that will prolong our long dry spell for at least the next five
days. Tomorrow will feature sunshine in full supply, and tomorrow
night will be picture perfect for high school football games with a
crystal clear sky and temperatures falling into the 50s during the
games.

The fine fall weather continues over the weekend with a sunny sky both
Saturday and Sunday; afternoon highs will be in the 67 to 71 degree
range, with early morning lows well down in the 40s. There is a pretty
decent chance that some of the colder valleys will reach the upper 30s
both Saturday and Sunday morning.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The next surface front is due in here Tuesday of
next week; that will be the leading edge of the coolest air so far
this season for much of the continental U.S. Unfortunately, it looks
like that front will encounter another very dry airmass, so beneficial
rain doesn't look likely. In fact, most communities probably won't see
a drop of rain. Then, chilly air rolls in here during the middle of
next week; it looks like many North Alabama cities will dip down into
the 30s by Thursday morning (one week from today) with a good chance
of widespread frost.

The long range models show even colder air moving southward by
mid-month, but it remains to be seen if a significant rain event will
develop across the Deep South ahead of that front. Birmingham's rain
deficit for the year is just under 20 inches (19.66"), and the
deficiency for Anniston is 27.43". Most of Alabama, needless to say,
remains in an exceptional drought.

NOEL: The tropical storm continue to produce lots of wind and rain
across the Bahamas as it moves slowly northward with winds of 60 mph.
The system is expected to remain a strong tropical storm, and will
slowly turn to the northeast during the next 24 hours. Noel will pass
close enough to Southeast Florida to warrant a tropical storm watch,
but the core of the storm will remain east of Miami and West Palm
Beach. Noel will not impact Alabama's weather in any way.

WELCOME NOVEMBER: Today, the average high in Birmingham is 69 degrees;
it drops to 60 by the end of the month. The warmest November
temperature on record is 85, set on November 1, 2000, and November 2,
2003. The coldest November temperature is 5 degrees above zero, on
November 25, 1950. Today marks the beginning of our fall tornado
season.

...Happy Halloween...

NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: No real change in the Alabama weather picture
today. Sunshine in full supply, and a nice warm-up after another chill
start. Most communities will wind up in the mid 70s this afternoon..
For trick or treaters this evening, the weather will be close to
perfect with a clear sky and temperatures falling through the 60s
during the 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. time frame.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A dry cold front passes through the
state tomorrow; winds will increase out of the northwest behind the
front, and another shot of cool and dry air will settle in here by
Friday and the weekend. Afternoon highs will be in the 68 to 72 degree
range, with early morning lows well down in the 40s. Needless to say,
great weather for the final night of the regular high school football
season in Alabama Friday night. Concerning the college games...
LSU will be at Alabama for a 4:00 p.m. kick off Saturday and Southern
Miss at UAB for a 6:00 p.m. start. Earlier in the afternoon, Tennessee
Tech will be at Auburn for their homecoming game which starts at 1:30.
Mostly clear dry weather for all those games. It will be about 72 in
Tuscaloosa at kick off dropping into the 60s. It will be in the low
70s for most of the game at Auburn and for UAB it will be about 68 at
kick off lowering to the upper 50s.

LONG RANGE: The GFS model shows a cold front passing through Alabama
on Tuesday of next week, but with very limited moisture significant
rain doesn't look likely. A stronger system will have better potential
for rain and thunderstorms around November 10, but keep in mind there
is little skill in a specific weather forecast beyond seven days, so
that could change.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Noel will move through the Bahamas today,
tonight and tomorrow with lots of wind and rain. The system is now
about 250 miles south of
Nassau in the Bahamas, and is packing sustained winds of around 40
mph. Some of the heavier rain bands could move onshore over extreme
Southeast Florida, but the core of Noel will remain east of Miami. The
system will pick up forward speed as it turns to the northeast
tomorrow night, pushing it out to sea. No impact at all on Alabama.

COMET HOLMES: Skywatchers throughout the Northern Hemisphere report
the newly visible Comet Holmes is a remarkable sight even under city
lights. The comet, described in glowing terms by many observers,
should continue to be visible to the naked eye for at least the next
few weeks. Only a couple comets each decade are this easy to see. You
can find Comet Holmes by using the "W" of Cassiopeia as your guide.
The five stars in a conspicuous zigzag pattern are high in the
northeast sky during the mid-evening hours. If you have binoculars,
you'll know the comet immediately when you see it: a small, albeit
distinct, circular lemon-yellow cloud of light. A small telescope will
help bring out the fuzzy details. (from Space.com).

GASPING FOR RAIN: At least that is what I thought my yard was doing
this morning when I took a brief walk before daylight to see the
waning harvest moon. Of course, it was my imagination, but it really
is dry as a bone. Not much hope in the near future. We are maintaining
dry weather on through the weekend. A weak front will reach the area
late tomorrow, but it will only feature a few scattered clouds. A
couple of fronts will move through the area over the next few days
bringing a few scattered clouds and a resurgence of dry air. This will
send the low temperatures back down to the mid to low 40s by Saturday
morning. Otherwise, we expect most high temperatures to be in the mid
70s Wednesday and then backing off to the lower 70s Thursday, Friday
and Saturday. This morning was our coldest morning this season. We
have a complete list of lows on the blog. To mention just a few: 28 at
Chulafinnee in Cleburne County, 33 in Odenville and Cottondale, 34 in
Pinson and Rainbow City, 37 in Mumford, Collinsville, Ft. Payne and
Albertville.

FOOTBALL WEATHER EARLY LOOK: We do not normally do the football
weather forecast until about Thursday. However, there seems to be a
few semi-important games this weekend and the weather looks great. LSU
will be at Alabama for a 4:00 p.m. kick off Saturday and Southern Miss
at UAB for a 6:00 p.m. start. Earlier in the afternoon, Tennessee Tech
will be at Auburn for their homecoming game which starts at 1:30.
Mostly clear dry weather for all those games. It will be about 72 in
Tuscaloosa at kick off dropping into the 60s. It will be in the low
70s for most of the game at Auburn and for UAB it will be about 68 at
kick off lowering to the upper 50s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Noel was over the south part of
Eastern Cuba and it had weakened a bit with sustained winds down to 40
mph. It is expected to curve northward crossing the western part of
the Bahamas and then move northeastward into the open Atlantic. The
latest track forecast keeps the center at least 150 miles off the SE
coast of Florida.

BIG ALABAMA HAILSTORM: I have in my caffeine stained fingers a
Photostat of the front page of the Richmond Times Dispatch of April 8,
1907. It had a front-page story about an enormous hailstorm at
Lelohatchie, Alabama. The hail was 10 inches deep in drifts. I must
say I do not know where that is located. I hope you know. Maybe it was
a town that went out of existence.

AUTUMN FOLIAGE: Have travelled very little this year, but this
morning took a 90-mile round trip through two counties and the autumn
foliage disappointing. I feel sure there will be certain trees that
will keep us happy. The ridges are showing only muted color. Also have
a report from a friend in Scottsboro. He advises decent color
considering the drought.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My Little Miss Molly evolves through
various stages of changing her mind. For a long time in recent months,
she wanted to sleep until 9:00 or 10:00. Lately she is hopping out of
bed before daylight and she is as lively as if she had been awake for
several hours. On her early break this morning, she had to walk on
frost. When she came back in, her little footsies felt like ice cubes.
I held her until she stopped shivering. Our little ones act almost
like humans at times. I am so glad that Molly came into my life 5
years ago. I never have been a tense, uptight person, but even if I
had, she would have loosened me up the first day she arrived. Life
goes on. With Molly, it is great......

...No Rain For Awhile...

DRY DAYS: We will end the month of October with dry weather across
Alabama; Birmingham's rain total for the month is 1.71", and that will
be the final total since it will be hard to find a decent cloud in the
sky for the rest of the week. Birmingham was actually one of the
driest spots; the October rain total for Tuscaloosa will be 2.35",
while Montgomery has measured 3.35" since October 1.

Our forecast for the rest of the week will feature mostly sunny mild
afternoons and clear cool nights. A fresh supply of dry, continental
air will move into the state on Thursday and Friday, which should keep
the dry spell intact all the way through the weekend. In fact, the
longer range computer models are suggesting the next potential
significant rain event for Alabama won't come until around November
10. Of course, that might change, but it does look like our rain
deficit for the year will only grow larger in coming days.
Birmingham's rain deficit for 2007 stands at 19.42", while Anniston is
a whopping 27.21" below normal since January 1.

EARLY FOR SNOW: One-half of 1% is all of the lower 48 that was covered
by snow yesterday. That was a decrease in coverage from recent days.
Very little additional snow fell over the weekend. Not much new snow
is expected at least through midweek. A total of 168 inches of snow
was on the ground at Mule Creek, Montana yesterday morning. That is
one of those high altitude automated snow-measuring stations at an
elevation of 8,317 feet.

BIRMINGHAM COLD FACTS: Our average date of the first freeze is
November 8; the earliest freeze came on October 18, 1948. So far,
Birmingham's coldest temperature this season came early Sunday
(October 28) when the mercury dropped to 45 degrees. There is a good
chance temperatures will be colder at daybreak this morning; we will
run down a list of lows on our afternoon edition later today.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Noel is about 300 miles south of Nassau (in
the Bahamas), and is packing sustained winds of 50 mph. The system
will bring lots of wind and rain to the Bahamas through mid-week, and
could sideswipe extreme Southeast Florida before recurving northeast,
out to the open water of the Atlantic. The system is expected to
remain below hurricane strength.

STORM ALERT XTREME: We hope to see you on Saturday, November 10 at the
BJCC for our annual severe storm training session. Once again this
year, the Alabama International Auto Show is a sponsor of Storm Alert
XTREME, and it will be held at the BJCC. This is your chance to learn
more about Alabama weather, and to be trained as a storm spotter. ABC
33/40 Meteorologist Brian Peters, long time WCM (Warning Coordination
Meteorologist) for the National Weather Service in Birmingham, will
teach a basic and advanced course on spotting small scale features
within thunderstorms that are very important to meteorologists.

DRY WEATHER CONTINUES: There is not a thing we can do about the

thing I can think of is cloud seeding. That also does not work very
well, especially when we do not have any clouds, which is our current
situation. So, what shall we do?

We might as well enjoy the nice autumn-like weather. The nights are
pleasantly cool, the afternoons comfortable with low humidity. A few
things will change over the next few days. The afternoons will get a
little warmer and also a bit more humid, but still well within our
comfort range. We look for highs in the mid 70s Wednesday and
Thursday, but backing off to near 70 on Friday as a back up supply of
cooler dry air arrives from the NW. Lows at night will be in the 40s,
except closer to 50 on Thursday morning. Last night was another cool
one across Alabama. One of the coolest temperatures last night was 39
at Hamilton, Cullman, Meridianville, Ft. Payne and Decatur. It was 40
in Vernon, 41 in Muscle Shoals and 42 in Pinson, Huntsville, Oneonta
and Talladega.

We do not see any significant improvement in the drought conditions
over the next several months, but the occasional winter rains that we
get will at least offer some temporary help. I am still blown away by
one drought statistic from Huntsville. Since January 1, 2005 the
Huntsville deficiency has reached 54.45 inches. That is a full year's
supply of rain that is missing in action in a little less than three
years. Just think what that would have done to help the corn crop,
Chandler Mountain tomatoes (Chandler Mountain is well known nationally
for its tomato production). Just think also, what that would do for
watermelon, corn, sorghum, soybeans and all manner of crops for that
part of Alabama. And just as important, what it would have done for
lakes and streams, water tables and water utilities. But enough of
that, no need of crying over spilled milk (er, spilled water).

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Noel is the main player on the
tropical stage today. It was centered 80 miles ESE of the east tip of
Cuba. It is pronounced "knoll" like a grassy knoll. Latest tracking
information from the National Hurricane Center keeps the center north
of Cuba, through the Bahamas and then turning NE into the open
Atlantic. If this track is correct, no significant impact on the USA.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: In the lower 48, 19 was the low this morning at
Gunnison, Colorado and Saranac Lake, New York. 6 below at Ft. Yukon
was the Alaska low. 2.60 inches of rain has fallen this year at San
Diego. They should have 8.32 inches by now. According to news reports,
most of the fires are at least contained. Time Magazine reports that
50% or more of the new housing in California since 1950 has been built
in a fire danger zone. The number of lightning strikes around the
world every year numbers 1.2 billion. Yes, lightning is frightening.
This includes all kinds of lightning bolts, including cloud to ground,
ground to cloud, cloud to cloud, and cloud to air.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I promised one of our readers last year
that I would no longer write about Molly's bathroom habits. She
considered that unnecessary and I honor her request. However, I must
mention that on our long walk this morning, Molly had just initiated
her major bathroom chore at the same split second that Bridgett,
another Shih-Tsu, popped up on the track and the Community Cat came
crawling out of the underbrush in the Old Crow Creek. Everything got
cancelled. After I got Molly under control, I had to backtrack to
scoop. Life goes on......

...Dry Week Ahead...

Our fine spate of October weather will continue for the next several
days as the tenth month lives up to its billing as a dry and
seasonably mild month. There are some interesting topics to cover, so
let's get to it.

FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON: Drier air is filtering into Alabama on
easterly winds. As relative humidities drop this afternoon, we will
be watching carefully for an enhanced wildfire danger. Winds will be
a little light and temperatures a little mild for a Red Flag Warning,
but the fire danger will be high, so take it easy with any outdoor
burning.

LIGHT FROST TONIGHT? That drier air will allow for some cooler
temperatures tonight. Readings will drop well into the 40s overnight,
with a few 30s in the normally colder locations of North Alabama. A
little light frost is not out of the question, but unlikely.

THE WORK WEEK: High pressure is centered over the Ohio River Valley
to the north of Alabama this morning. This position is producing the
easterly winds over the state. This will keep us dry and seasonably
mild with a good supply of sunshine. By Wednesday, the high will
consolidate over the Carolinas. As it does, moisture levels will come
up just a bit. We still should see partly cloudy skies at best by
then. By Thursday, a cool front will dive southeastward and pass
through the state, but it will be dry. It will deliver a reinforcing
shot of cool, dry air for Friday and Saturday. Another front will
approach on Sunday, but it looks like it will be moisture starved.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: After the second dry front passes through, high
pressure will build in for the next week. This high pressure will
eventually set up offshore in the Atlantic by the end of that week,
and the moisture fetch into the Southeast will be impressive. This
will set the stage for a
good rain and storm event by the weekend of the 10th.

NOEL: The fourteenth tropical storm of the 2007 North Atlantic
Hurricane Season formed yesterday in the Caribbean south of
Hispaniola. The storm is moving northwest toward southeastern Cuba.
Extremely torrential rains are a huge problem over Hispaniola, Jamaica
and eastern Cuba. The jury is not in yet on the eventual track. It
could move westward along the southern coast of Cuba, or it could turn
more northward and pass out over the Bahamas. Everything depends on a
predicted weakness to the north of the storm. Some strengthening is
possible today, and Noel could become a hurricane at some point before
it exits stage right over the Atlantic. A note on the pronunciation:
Noel is pronounced "knoll."

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: KNBC Newsman Chuck Henry nearly lost his life
as he covered the raging California Wildfires. Waiting until the last
second to evacuate as a wall of flames bore down on him, he found that
his van would not start. He was rescued by firefighters.

...Dry Week Ahead...

It is another absolutely beautiful day across Alabama on this Sunday
with brilliant blue skies, lots of sunshine, low humidity and
seasonably mild temperatures. After morning lows in the 40s, the
mercury is recovering nicely to near 70 degrees.

TONIGHT: Expect excellent sleeping conditions tonight, perfect for
throwing the windows wide open and grabbing an extra blanket. Lows
will be similar to this morning once again. Skies will be clear.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure over the Mid-Atlantic will keep
Alabama in an easterly flow through much of the week ahead. Drier air
Monday night may allow for light frost in the normally colder valleys
of North Alabama by Tuesday morning. A powerful storm system will
move through the Great Lakes at midweek. The circulation around this
storm will send a dry cold front our way by Thursday. It will serve
up a reinforcing helping of seasonably cool and dry air just in time
for the weekend.

FIRE DANGER: Conditions will become conducive for fire spread as low
humidities and brisk easterly winds conspire to cause problems on
Monday. The borderline factors will be temperatures and a diminishing
wind. The recent rains have helped a little also.

LONG RANGE: It looks like we might be moving into an active pattern
as we exit October and head into November. The GFS had been
predicting a very deep trough over the eastern United States after
next weekend. Overnight runs backed away from this idea. It does
appear that there will be a decent rainfall threat around the 6th and
7th.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression number 16 formed last night in the
Caribbean south of Hispaniola. It has strengthened steadily this
morning and the large circulation has been upgraded to Tropical Storm
Noel, the fourteenth named storm of what has been a busy, but
relatively uneventful Atlantic hurricane season. The storm is
expected to move northwestward, crossing Haiti then the coast of
southeastern Cuba by Tuesday. It then turns north and northeastward,
passing through the Bahamas. Noel may still become a hurricane.
There is a great deal of uncertainty with this system, both in terms
of track and intensity. One of the more reliable track models does
carry it as far west as the western tip of Cuba. It could get
interesting then, especially for South Florida and the Keys.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Wilma moved onto the northeastern
Yucatan Peninsula at an agonizingly slow pace, battering the resorts
of Cancun and Playa del Carmen with 145 mph winds and a storm surge of
up to 11 feet. Cozumel and Cancun had winds of sustained hurricane
force for twenty four hours and 62 inches of rain fell..

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A newlywed bride was swept to her death as she
and her fiancée took photographs of tremendous waves from a ferocious
Pacific storm at Pacific Grove, CA. The storm generated waves up to
27 feet high. The powerful storm swirled offshore for a day before
moving inland, pounding Washington, Oregon and California with the
tremendous waves

...Nice Weekend Rolls Along...
Greetings from Oxford, Mississippi. We are at the University of
Mississippi where my son Chris is participating in a cheerleading
clinic. It is beautiful here…as it is across the border in Alabama.

ANOTHER GREAT MORNING: Under clear skies, temperatures fell mostly
into the 40s overnight with a few upper 30s in the colder locations.
Today will feature brilliant blue skies, a brisk north wind, and
afternoon readings around 70. After another great sleeping night
tonight, Monday promises to be just like today.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Under clear skies, temperatures fell mostly into the
40s overnight with a few upper 30s in the colder locations. Today
will feature brilliant blue skies, a brisk north wind, and afternoon
readings around 70. After another great sleeping night tonight,
Monday promises to be just like today. High pressure should remain
anchored over the Mid-Atlantic States through the week, keeping
Alabama in an easterly flow. A couple of passing disturbances may
produce partly cloudy skies at times. A dry front will pass through
Thursday night as a strong storm moves through the Great Lakes states.

HURRICANE FOR HALLOWEEN? Tropical Depression 16 formed late last
evening over the Caribbean south of the island of Hispaniola as wind
shear relaxed and convection exploded. There is uncertainty in the
models about the track, but the feeling is that it will move northwest
and then eventually northeast, crossing the Bahamas and heading into
the open Atlantic eventually. It will likely become a tropical storm
later today and be named Noel but strengthening should be slow for the
next day or so. There are indications that it could become a
hurricane while it is near the Bahamas. A disturbance in the
northwestern Caribbean near the Yucatan should continue westward into
the Bay of Campeche. It should not develop into anything.

NOVEMBER SEVERE WEATHER? There are hints that we could deal with a
strong system around Monday the 6th followed by a big trough and
another strong system around November 11th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1846: A group of inexperienced travelers was caught
unawares by a major storm which dumped five feet of snow on the Sierra
Nevada Mountinas in California. Their wagons and cattle were trapped
in a mountain canyon along with them. Only 45 of the 79 people in the
party survived the winter. The group came to be known as the Donner
Party, apart of western folklore.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A crew of thirty-one men aboard the Windjammer
Cruises 282 foot long, four masted sailboat, the Fantome battled fifty
foot waves and 115 mph winds as Hurricane Mitch sealed their doom in
the Caribbean. The crew put to sea to avoid being in port during the
hurricane and spent two harrowing days as the storm unexpectedly
turned towards them and then stalled. All that was ever found of the
ship was two life rafts and 8 life vests off Honduras, stenciled
"Fantome."
