...Sky Show Tonight...

I have a special treat for you tonight. If you have a clear eastern
sky tonight, the moon will be huge. But if you took a photo of it, it
wouldn't be any larger than any other full moon. It looks larger
because of the converging lines of trees and buildings on the horizon
and its closeness to the horizon. Also, in the evening sky, Saturn
and Venus will appear to have a close encounter, passing within ¾ of a
degree of each other, or less than the width of your index finger with
your arm extended at full length. Of course, clouds and showers
could limit your chances to view these special astronomical features,
but I am sure you won't complain if welcome rainfall shows up in your
area.

GOOD CHANCES SHOWERS AND STORMS: A weak frontal system will sag into
Alabama from the northeast over the next 24 hours. This will enhance
our showers and thunderstorm chances today into tomorrow. Rain will
be a little more widespread and little more intense. The big question
is whether the front pushes through the area by late tomorrow. For
now, we will use that as the basis for our forecast, calling for the
rain chances to sift into Central Alabama by Monday with mostly dry
conditions on Tuesday. Then moisture levels will be back on the
increase on Wednesday. This means that celebrations on the Fourth
will feature scattered showers and
storms.

LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK: There are signs that a deep upper trough
will develop over the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys by next Thursday,
giving us a good chance of rain and storms in the Thursday/Friday time
frame. We will keep our fingers crossed that this system could bring
some general one inch amounts to the area.

WEEKEND PEEK: Behind the frontal system, drier air should spread into
Alabama by late Friday, giving us dry and less humid conditions for
the weekend

TROPICS: Weak low pressure is centered just off the east coast of
Florida this morning. This low is expected to move slowly northward
along the coast, but no development is expected thanks to strong wind
shear conditions.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: The Tallahassee area was hard hit by a damaging
hurricane, the second of three hurricanes to strike Florida within a
month. Early season hurricanes are not uncommon in the Sunshine
State, but three striking within a month so early in the season made
1886 an unusual year. Several fatalities occurred in Apalachicola.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: On radar, it looked like a long, snaky line of
showers and storms extending along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin,
Iowa and Minnesota. It was actually a gigantic hatch of mayflies.
The newly hatched insects piled up in drifts on roads and bridges.

===================================================================

...Afternoon Storms Again Today...

Once again today, we will forecast an array of scattered afternoon
showers and thunderstorms across Alabama, much like the ones we have
seen during the past four days. Unfortunately, there is no skill at
telling you exactly when and where it will rain this afternoon, but
the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three by late
afternoon.

TO THE NORTH: A surface front is drifting southward in our direction,
and we will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms across
North Alabama tonight as outflow boundaries from storms to the north
could keep the convection going. That same front should bring
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon as
the boundary pushes down toward the Alabama/Tennessee border. Most
Alabama communities have a decent chance of picking up one-half to one
inch of rain during the next 48 hours.

The front should become stationary somewhere over North Alabama on
Sunday; we will maintain the chance of scattered showers and storms on
Sunday, but the most numerous ones could very well be south of
Birmingham. Then, drier air slowly filters into the state on Monday
and Tuesday of next week, and on those days it looks like most of the
scattered storms will be confined to the western and southern counties
of Alabama.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: Still looks like routine early July weather for
Alabama for the holiday; on Wednesday of next week the sky should be
partly to mostly sunny, and any afternoon showers and storms should be
rather widely spaced. The high will be in the low to mid 90s in most
communities.

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge a few scattered showers and
storms on daily basis along the Gulf coast from Panama City westward
to Gulf Shores through next week, but we sure don't expect a wash-out.
Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day, and the sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a warm 85
degrees.

THURSDAY'S STORMS: Strong thunderstorm winds in the community of New
Site (Tallapoosa County) damaged several city buildings, including
City Hall and the Fire Department. There was damage to a gymnasium
roof, and numerous trees were blown down. There was also some wind
damage in Cullman County in the communities of Hanceville and Joppa.
Rain totals included 1.60" at Cordova, 1.35" at Hollins (Clay County),
1.08" at Pell City, 1.00" at Jemison, .82" at Vincent, .69" at
Gadsden, .51" at Cheaha State Park, .22" at Oneonta, and .18" in
downtown Jasper at the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM site atop the King Building.

ROAMING: Yesterday's high in Duluth, Minnesota was only 64 degrees;
the high in Chicago was 71. In contrast, sizzling heat is cranking up
in the Desert Southwest; the high in Phoenix yesterday was 111
degrees.

===================================================================

...Hot, Humid Summer Weather...

The weather won't change much across Alabama today; we expect a good
supply of sunshine this morning, followed by a few widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. The
weather will remain hot and humid, with a high between 91 and 95
degrees for most neighborhoods. Another words, a very routine day for
late June in Alabama.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY: The upper air pattern will gradually change during
the next 48 hours, as an upper trough becomes established over the
eastern part of the nation. This will drive a surface front in our
direction, and accordingly we expect to see an increase in the
coverage of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and on Saturday.
Generally speaking, we expect rainfall amounts between one-half and
one inch for most communities on these days, but this is summer, and
rainfall distribution won't be all that even. The good news is that
some spots will probably see over one inch from heavier downpours.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: Drier air will creep into North Alabama Saturday night,
and at this time it looks like most of the showers and storms on
Sunday and Monday will come over the southern half of the state. The
chance of getting wet around Birmingham, Anniston, Tuscaloosa, and
Gadsden looks pretty slim on both of these days. The humidity will be
a little lower, and nights slightly cooler.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PREVIEW: At this point it looks like the weather next
Wednesday, the Fourth of July, will be hot and humid with a good
supply of sunshine, and just a handful of afternoon storms. The
afternoon high should be in the low or mid 90s.

AT THE BEACH: We expect very normal summer weather conditions along
the Gulf coast for the next seven to ten days; about 7 to 9 hour of
sunshine on a daily basis with the risk of a few passing showers or
storms from time to time. Along the immediate coast, the afternoon
high will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, and the sea water
temperatures are generally in the mid 80s. Tropical storm or hurricane
formation is not expected through the weekend.

WEDNESDAY STORMS: Strong storms fired up again yesterday afternoon
across Alabama. Rain totals included 1.26" at Childersburg, .76" at
Mount Olive, .65" at Mt. Cheaha, .38" at Oneonta, and .36" at
Sylacauga. Six workers were injured at Drummond Company's Shoal Creek
Mine in western Jefferson County (near Oak Grove) when lightning
struck drilling equipment and ignited methane gas that was in the
area. Three of those injured were listed in critical condition last
night at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

ROAMING: More rain over Texas yesterday and last night; the total at
Dallas/Fort Worth was 1.84", while Abilene was soaked with 2.42".
Hottest spot in the nation was Gila Bend, Arizona with 114 degrees.
Libby, Montana reported a low of 31 degrees.

===================================================================

...Some Sun; A Few Storms...

LET'S CELEBRATE SOME GOOD RAIN: The most widespread showers and storms
yesterday were over the western side of Alabama. The small community
of Hubbertville, in northern Fayette County, picked up a remarkable
4.02" of rain during a nearly stationary, strong thunderstorm. Other
totals included 1.82" in the Flatwoods neighborhood in Northport, .89"
at Pelham, .85" at Cuba (in the southern part of Sumter County near
the Mississippi line), and .49" at the ABC 33/49 SKYCAM location on
top of the Daniel Building on 20th Street in downtown Birmingham. The
Birmningham Airport, where the records are kept, measured only .12".
Of course, we must point out the fact that many neighborhoods remained
bone dry due to the scattered nature of the showers and storms.

TODAY AND TOMORROW: We don't expect any serious change in the weather
during the next 48 hours; hot and humid weather continues with highs
in the 90 to 94 degree range, and the chance of a few scattered,
mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Some drier air
could creep in here from the east, meaning the best chance of catching
an afternoon storm will probably remain on the western side of
Alabama.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: We still expect a general increase in the number of
showers and thunderstorms on these days as a nice upper air trough
forms over the eastern part of the U.S., and a surface front
approaches from the north (notice we don't call it a "cold" front!).
The latest computer model data has slowed the system down a bit, so it
looks like Saturday will be the day with the best coverage of showers
and thunderstorms. Drier air will try to slip into North Alabama
Sunday, and a majority of the showers and storms by Sunday and Monday
could very well be south of Birmingham.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The 2007 Hurricane Season is rolling along rather
quietly; the Atlantic basin remains quiet and tropical storm formation
is not expected for the rest of the week.

THE WIDE WORLD OF WEATHER: Rain continues to fall where they don't
need it; another 2.15" of rain fell on the Dallas/Fort Worth area
yesterday with more flooding problems. Water was reported up to the
windows of cars in Haltom City, near Fort Worth. A number of water
rescues were needed in several North Texas counties. In Europe,
thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes amid severe
flooding across England and Wales that is now believed to have claimed
four lives. The hot spots in the U.S. yesterday were in the desert of
Arizona, both Bullhead City and Gila Bend reported 114 degrees. The
coldest spot in the continental U.S. was Stanley, Idaho with a frosty
24 degrees.

===================================================================

...Typical Summer Weather Continues...

Our forecast through mid-week will feature all of the usual elements
we expect in the summertime around here... heat, humidity, haze, and
scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening
hours. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the 90 to 93 degree range,
and the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in four. Most
of the showers and storms will come between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Another words, very standard late June weather for Alabama.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: We continue to believe we will see a general increase
in the number and coverage of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama
on these two days as a long wave upper trough develops over the
eastern U.S., and a surface cold front approaches from the north. At
this time it looks like rainfall amounts will average between one-half
and one inch, but some lucky communities could see more. Daytime
temperatures will back down a bit due to the clouds and showers.

Drier air will creep into North Alabama Saturday night, and at this
time it looks like any showers and storms in Alabama on Sunday and
Monday will be confined to the southern quarter of the state. Humidity
levels should be a little lower on those days over the northern
counties. The drier air means that nights will be a tad cooler as
well.

LONG RANGE: The overall pattern favors an upper air high over the
western third of the nation through mid-July, meaning the most intense
heat should remain west of Alabama. Looks like we can expect
temperatures and rainfall to be near normal for the next couple of
weeks, with most of the rain coming from the daily opportunity of
"scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms".

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet this morning and tropical
storm formation is not expected during the next few days. The most
active months are typically August, September, and the first week of
October when sea surface temperatures tend to peak. The Dauphin Island
Sea Lab was reporting a water temperature of 85 degrees late last
night.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain total for June is 1.46", and the
total since January 1 is 11.74". The current deficiency for 2007 now
stands at 16.60". The numbers are even more dramatic in Tuscaloosa;
the total for the year is only 9.47", and the deficit is a whopping
20.72". Most of North Alabama remains in an "exceptional drought" as
defined by the National Drought Mitigation Center.

MONDAY'S SHOWERS: Rain totals from across Alabama yesterday included
1.21" at Hamilton (measured at the Marion County Emergency Operations
Center), .55" at Centre, .53" at Haleyville, .23" at Helena, .17" at
Ashville, .16" at Blountsville, and .16" at Gadsden (Noccalula Falls).
Data from NEXRAD radar suggested over one inch of rain fell on parts
of Clarke, Wilcox, and Dallas Counties in the southwest part of
Alabama.

...Scattered Storms This Week...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were a welcome sight across
Alabama on Sunday as moisture levels started to increase across the
area. I would estimate that about 40 percent of the northern two
thirds of the state picked up rain, with most amounts less than a
quarter inch. Some luckier locations received one half to one inch.
Probably the big winner according to Doppler radar estimates was
northern Marengo County, where a bulls eye of three inches over a
small area north of Linden. A severe thunderstorm was issued for a
brief time for eastern Jefferson and eastern Shelby Counties. Trees
were snapped off just east of Centreville in Bibb County by a strong
storm just after 3 p.m. Summertime thunderstorms typically produce a
great deal of lightning, and some of these did just that. This is
Lightning Safety Week and a good time to remember your lightning
safety rules.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A huge surface high is over the western
Atlantic. This is allowing large amounts of tropical moisture to flow
into the Deep South. Ridging to the east of Alabama should gradually
break down with time and we will go from the periphery of the moist
flow to more in the middle of it. This means good chances for
scattered showers and thunderstorms each day this week, much like
yesterday. Today and tomorrow may work out to be some of the best
chances, with a weak trough of low pressure over the state.

LATE WEEK FRONT? By late in the week, a big upper level trough
should start to be carved out over the eastern United States. As it
does, this will allow cooler air down into the eastern third of the
country. We could see a fairly respectable front for this time of
year wedging into the Southeast from the north and northeast come late
Friday into Saturday. It could hang around into Sunday, and hopefully
it will, because this could spell an opportunity for good chances for
showers and thunderstorms then. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet for the time being. No
disturbances are threatening to develop into tropical cyclones at this
time. Tropical cyclone 3B in the Bay of Bengal has caused tremendous
flooding in India and Pakistan.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Lightning struck four rock climbers on
Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park CA. Fortunately, the
victims all survived, but many climbers are not so lucky. Climbers
have to carefully check weather forecasts, which often include mention
of thunderstorms. In the west, it is generally safer to climb in the
morning hours, because most thunderstorms occur after noon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1749: Drought had gotten so bad in Massachusetts
that people were called on to fast as fields and forests burned in an
effort to remove God's punishment.

...Another Hot One...

Yesterday was one of the hottest days of the year so far in Alabama.
The mercury topped out at 97F at the Birmingham Airport, 98F at
Tuscaloosa and 99F at Anniston. Pinson hit the century mark with a
high of 100F. Temperatures today will rival those of yesterday, but
most likely will not exceed them. The record high for today at
Birmingham is 99F. I think we will fall just short of it again.

STRAY STRONG STORM TODAY? We will be on the lookoiut through the
afternoon for the development of a couple of stray storms thanks to a
passing upper level disturbance that might allow something to get
started. If one does, it will have the opportunity to become strong
quickly given the high amount of thermodynamic energy available.
Coverage will be slim, but if you are lucky enough to get underneath
one of these thunderboomers, enjoy. Just be careful of the lightning.
This is lightning safety week coming up and we don't want you to be
an example.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Once again today, Jefferson and Shelby County are
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Ozone. And once again, air
quality will be unhealthy for sensitive individuals. Take steps to
reduce emissions.

LOOKING AHEAD: Moisture levels are on the increase across Alabama.
The increased moisture will allow for widely scattered thunderstorms
to develop each day through midweek. Any of those storms could be on
the strong side. By Thursday, an approaching, an approaching
shortwave will serve to enhance our shower and thunderstorms chances.
Meanwhile, a large longwave trough will be developing over the eastern
United States. This will send a cool front southward towards Alabama
and the Deep South. It looks like the best chance for rain will come
Friday and linger into Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: An Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 crashed at JFK
airport in New York City killing 113 of the 124 people on board. The
tower never experienced the microburst, which was held back by a
seabreeze front. Plane crashed 2400 feet short of the runway. Famed
tornado researcher Theodore Fujita studied the incident and discovers
that the crash was caused by a microburst. His research leads to
improved air safety.

REMEMBERING AUDREY: At 10:30 p.m. on June 24, 1957, the Weather
Bureau in New Orleans issued the first advisory on a tropical
depression in the Bay of Campeche. The decision was based on
meteorological data and a radio report from a shrimp boat. The
depression was located 300 miles south of Brownsville TX. The storm
would become Hurricane Audrey, moving northward over the next 3 days
and striking near the Louisiana/Texas border causing extreme loss of
life. More about the 7th deadliest hurricane in U.S. history in
today's Weather Blog.
