...Talking A Little Frost...

A cool airmass has overspread much of the eastern United States this
weekend, giving snow to parts of Pennsylvania and New York, and below
normal temperatures to a wide area. Three inches of snow is expected
overnight tonight in the Gatlinburg area of the Smokies. It will also
give us our coldest readings of the season so far, and the chance for
frost.

BREEZY SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy skies and temperatures struggling to
make it out of the 40s highlight our weather on this Saturday. Thrown
in a north wind at 10-20 mph and it will feel quite blustery this
afternoon. A lake wind advisory has been issued.

FROSTY FORECAST: Skies will clear late this evening across the area.
Overnight lows will drop into the 30s in many locations. A persistent
north wind will limit the frost potential overnight, but protected
valleys could see frost by morning. After a chilly start, Sunday
promises to be a brilliantly sunny day, with highs topping out near 60
degrees. There still will be a decent northerly breeze tomorrow, just
not quite as brisk as today. Look for widespread frost Sunday night
and Monday morning as winds die down and temperatures settle into the
middle 30s on average. A warmup will begin Monday, with daytime
temperatures back in the upper 60s. Look for 70s on Tuesday, which
should be a fine day.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Similar weather tonight in Tuscaloosa, Auburn and
Oxford for the Tide, Tigers and Blazers. Clearing skies and cool
temperatures falling into the 40s.

BASEBALL WEATHER? Tonight's game two of the ALCS between the Yankees
and Halos will be in danger of postponement with a 90% chance of rain,
strong winds and temperatures in the 40s in New York City.

TROPICS: Still nothing to talk about in the tropical Atlantic.
Dangerous Hurricane Rick in the eastern Pacific is nearing Category
Five intensity off the Mexican coast. It will affect Baja California
and the southeastern Mexican coast around midweek, still as a hurricane.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's show will feature a fun and informative
visit with Bill Read, the Director of the National Hurricane Center,
live from the National Weather Association meeting in Norfolk. Listen
at www.WeatherBrains.com.

THE LONG HOT SUMMER OF 2007: Record highs of 90F were recorded at
Tuscaloosa and Pinson on this date in 2008. It was the latest 90F
reading ever at Pinson. Pinson recorded ninety five 90F days during
the long hot summer of 2007, an all time record.

ON THE DATE IN 2008: Small, but powerful Hurricane King made
landfall near Miami FL. Winds were sustained at 122 mph with gusts to
150 mph in Miami. Reconnaissance during the day indicated that the
hurricane had winds in excess of 100 mph, but because it was so small,
it weaved through the observation network of the Keys and Florida
Straits, and forecasters believed its intensity had either dropped or
been overestimated. It turned out they were wrong. The tornado-like
hurricane caused damage totaling $28 million. King would be the worst
hurricane at Miami since the devastating 1926 hurricane. Follow my

...A Brief October Appearance...

I'm sorry. Could you tell me where October went? I must have slept
through it. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about: the fine,
fair days and mild temperatures. Those mornings with low temperatures
in the 50s and just a hint of crispness in the air. The warm
afternoons, with golden sunshine and highs in the 70s. You remember
those, right?

SO FAR THIS OCTOBER: It has been anything but typical during the
first half of the month. It has rained on 12 of the first 16 days.
Measurable rain was observed on 11 of 12 days between the 4th and
15th, with seven straight days of measurable rain from the 9th through
the 15th.

CHILLY WEATHER: Cloudy and chilly across the area today, with
temperatures struggling to get out of the 40s in most areas. There
could be a few peeks of sunshine this afternoon. Clearing skies
tonight with lows in the 30s. A 3-6 mph wind should preclude
widespread frost, but it can't be ruled out. Bright and sunny
weather is expected tomorrow with highs in the 50s. Better chance of
frost Monday morning, when it could be fairly widespread. Things will
gradually start warming up as we head into a new work week.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama hosts South Carolina for homecoming at the
Capstone; the sky will be mostly clear at kickoff (6:45 p.m.) with a
temperature close to 48 degrees; expect mid 40s by the final whistle.
Auburn hosts Kentucky (6:30 p.m. kickoff) with similar conditions; the
temperature will be around 50 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 40s
during the game. The sky will be generally clear. UAB will travel to
Oxford, Mississippi to play Ole Miss tomorrow night (6:00 p.m. kickoff)
… the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature of 51 degrees,
falling into the mid 40s by the fourth quarter.

TROPICS: All quiet in the tropical Atlantic. The GFS hints at some
potential development near the Bahamas by next weekend, that would
head on out to sea, and at the potential for something in the mid-
Atlantic by the end of the month. Nothing expected to affect any land
areas as our quiet season continues.

WEATHERBRAINS: It was a trip down memory lane for fans of radio in
Alabama, as Don Keith, one of the great announcers from the 70s at
WVOK , the Mighty 690 in Birmingham was our guest. We talked radio,
and especially radio weather. He even read a tornado warning from
April 3, 1974. Looking forward to Bill Read, the Director of the
National Hurricane Center being on Monday night live from t he
National Weather Association meeting inn Norfolk. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Strong canyon winds blew twenty five cars of a
BNSF freight train off a trestle near East Glacier, Minnesota. The
Midvale trestle was the site of past derailments that have also been
blamed on strong winds. Wind gusts to 86 mph were reported in the
area. A wind gust to 106 mph was reported at Babb, Montana. Follow

...Feels Like Winter...

A VACATION FROM RAIN: The weather map looks like winter. The
temperature almost feels that way. It is not winter. People in the
weather business consider December, January and February as the winter
months. In parts of the Northern USA, it really does feel like winter
with some snow. Here in Alabama we are getting some noticeable effects
of that weather. A big high-pressure system has spread out across the
midsection of the nation and it has sent a cold front all the way into
the Gulf of Mexico. By daybreak tomorrow, the front will be near
Miami, believe it or not.

Clouds hung tough across Alabama today and temperatures felt even
colder because of a brisk northerly wind. At mid-afternoon,
temperatures were in the low and mid 50s across the north. The
overcast conditions and brisk wind made it feel like the 40s. Those
clouds will stubbornly hang on tonight. We could even see a few
patches of light drizzle overnight and low temperatures by morning
will be close to the 40-degree mark.

SATURDAY WEATHER: Breezy and very cool. You might see a few periods
of sunshine during the afternoon, but most of the day will be cloudy
however it will be clearing Saturday night. The wind tomorrow will be
peaking over 20 mph at times, so it will not be a comfortable day. By
Sunday it should be sunny everywhere with cold early mornings.
We believe that Monday morning will be our coldest. We are calling for
an average low across North/Central Alabama of around 36.

This means that in the colder valleys there could be some low
temperatures closer to 30, which would give the possibility of some
scattered frost. This will only happen if the wind dies down
completely. Even a 5 to 8 mph wind can prevent it. A more pronounced
warming trend starts Tuesday.

A RAIN VACATION: Birmingham has had measurable rain on 11 of the last
16 days, including 11 in a row. Anniston has had measurable rain 12
out of the first 15 days. Tuscaloosa has received over 5 inches of
rain in the last two weeks. They had over 9 inches in September. So,
we need a break and we are getting the break. This will allow the
ground to dry out some and swollen streams to decline. We may not have
any more rain until late next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For sure you will need some extra clothing for the
high school games tonight. Temperatures will fall from the 50s into
the 40s with fairly brisk north winds. College football Saturday looks
great. All of the games are night games. South Carolina will be at
Alabama, Kentucky will be at Auburn, and UAB will be in Oxford to play
Old Miss. Temperatures will be in the 40s throughout the game.

AROUND THE USA: 15 at Allagash, Maine was the coldest in the USA this
morning. A snowstorm across North/Central Pennsylvania has caused
widespread tree damage and power outages. The heavy wet snow
accumulated on trees that still had their leaves. (Autumn color at
that.) As much as 6 to 9 inches accumulated.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is a lot like me. She
does not react very much to different temperatures unless it is real
hot. She was trotting along the walking track this morning like a
Tennessee walking horse, the wind was blowing her hair around, but she
did not notice. One thing she did notice abruptly was a big brown dry
leaf being blown about by the wind. I am convinced she thought it was
the Community Rabbit. She chased it down an embankment and it was
tough getting her back on the track. Life goes on. She has already had
an energy explosion this afternoon.

...A Sharp Change To Colder Weather...

AN OCTOBER CHILL: A chilly, blustery weather pattern is shaping up for
Alabama as we head into the weekend, but at least the weather will be
drier in the days ahead. Temperatures will rise very little today,
hovering mostly in the low to mid 50s with lingering clouds and a
brisk north wind. You might see a few peeks of sun today, but clouds
will generally hang tough. Despite the clouds, the weather will be
generally dry with only some scattered light drizzle.

THE WEEKEND: The weather won't change much tomorrow; clouds will hang
around much of the day, with cold air will continue streaming into the
state with a chilly northerly wind. Some communities across North
Alabama will hold in the 40s all day, more like a mid-winter day. And,
as the sky finally clears tomorrow night, the stage is set for cold
mornings early Sunday and Monday, with readings in the 36 to 40 degree
range. We don't expect any frost early Sunday since the wind will
likely continue through the night, but Monday will bring the chance of
some frost for the time the season as the wind will be calm. Some of
the normally colder valleys across North Alabama might even be close
to freezing at daybreak Monday.

NEXT WEEK: A warming trend begins Monday, with an afternoon high
around 70. We should reach the mid 70s Tuesday and Wednesday as a
southerly flow returns to Alabama. For now, it looks like the next
significant rain event will come during the latter half next week,
especially late Thursday and Friday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A good, warm jacket is in order for tonight's high
school games. The kickoff temperature will be around 50, falling into
the 40s during the game with a north wind of 5 to 10 mph. Clouds will
be around, but no rain is expected. Tomorrow, Alabama hosts South
Carolina for homecoming at the Capstone; the sky will be mostly clear
at kickoff (6:45 p.m.) with a temperature close to 48 degrees; expect
mid 40s by the final whistle. Auburn hosts Kentucky (6:30 p.m.
kickoff) with similar conditions; the temperature will be around 50
degrees at kickoff, falling into the 40s during the game. The sky will
be generally clear. UAB will travel to Oxford, Mississippi to play Ole
Miss tomorrow night (6:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be clear with a
kickoff temperature of 51 degrees, falling into the mid 40s by the
fourth quarter.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: State College, Pennsylvania recorded three-
tenths of an inch of snow yesterday, setting a record for earliest
recorded snowfall there. The previous earliest snow in State College
was one-tenth of an inch on Oct. 18, 1901. Snow flakes were also seen
across parts of New York and Connecticut. Tonight's first game in the
ALCS, the Angels at the Yankees, will be played with temperatures
around 40 degrees with light rain and drizzle. The wind chill index
will be very close to freezing.

...Significant Changes Ahead...

FIRST REAL DOSE OF AUTUMN: Central Alabama is losing 2 or 3 minutes a
day of daylight, which is just another indicator of the change in
season. Driving across the countryside this morning, I noticed a few
trees have reached their maximum color, but most of them have not
started. By the time this weekend is over and starting next week, you
should see a faster change in color thanks to some very chilly
temperatures.

Again I am getting the wagon before the mule, because we have some
thunderstorms in progress across parts of the state this afternoon.
Most of those have been across the central counties. At mid-afternoon
there was considerable lightning in those storms south of Birmingham
and north of Clanton. All of those are moving toward the east.

The wind will shift around to the north later this evening, probably
before midnight. That will be the lead of sharply cooler weather that
will spread over much of the state by daybreak. By the time you go to
school or to work tomorrow morning, you will probably have some
temperatures in the 40s over West Alabama and even some 50s down south.

Unfortunately, we will not see immediate clearing behind this front
and clouds will persist much of tomorrow even with a brisk NW wind.
There could even be some patchy light drizzle early tomorrow morning.
However, after today, we do not expect any more heavy rain and pesky
thunderstorms all the way through at least the middle of next week.
This is a tremendous blessing since the entire state is waterlogged,
streams are high and crops are being affected by too much rain.

WEEKEND FROST? The wind early Saturday will be too brisk to allow any
frost formation, even though some valley temperatures will be low
enough. There could be some scattered light frost in the protected
valleys Sunday morning and maybe a better chance Monday. Even so, it
should not be a killing frost because temperatures will not be that
cold. We are calling for lows in the upper 30s in the Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham, Anniston corridor Monday morning. The big high-pressure
system at that time will extend from Alabama to Pennsylvania, so
little or no wind Monday morning will help the frost chances.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks good for Friday night high school games. This
time you will not need to take rain gear, instead some cool weather
gear. The temperature will be in the 50s through the game. In college
football, South Carolina will be at Alabama and Kentucky at Auburn for
an evening game withkick off about the same time. We expect fair, dry,
chilly weather with temperatures in the 40s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I do not know how many years I will be
on this year, but my ambition is to live as long as Moses or at least
hang in there with Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes. Strangely enough,
Little Miss Molly is not aging, but getting younger the way she acts.
Her stamina blows my mind. Last night she became impatient for me to
throw the first pitch and went on a wild romp over a period of 15
minutes at seemingly 40 mph from the bedroom to the living area and
back and tossing balls to me. Later we had a vicious ballgame. She
suddenly stopped and went kaplooey on the carpet and went sound
asleep. Life goes on.

...A Few Strong Storms Today...

ONE MORE DAY OF RAIN: Yet another day with a chance of rain for
Alabama, in what has been a rather remarkable September and October.
We are dealing with a storm track enhanced by the current El Nino
cycle, and yet another disturbance aloft will spin up a surface low
over the Deep South today. We expect a round of showers and
thunderstorms, mostly this afternoon, with potential for another one-
half to one inch of rain. It also appears the chance of strong storms
is back on the table with some degree of surface based instability and
low level veering of the wind. Seems like the best chance of any
severe storms today will be over the southern
two-thirds of the state; we will be watching radar trends as the day
progresses. The rain will end this evening.

CHILLY DAYS AHEAD: The coolest air so far this fall season will invade
Alabama late tonight, and tomorrow promises to be a rather raw, chilly
day with temperatures having a hard time reaching the mid 50s, along
with stubborn clouds and brisk northerly breeze. A little drizzle is
possible tomorrow morning, but the day will be mostly rain-free.

On Saturday, a strong disturbance aloft will move over Alabama, and
will produce cloudy periods and some risk of widely scattered showers.
Moisture will be very limited, so rain should be light and spotty. The
day will feature more clouds than sun with a high only in the mid 50s.
That chilly north wind will continue.

There is a good chance we drop into the upper 30s both Sunday and
Monday morning. Most likely, the coldest morning will be early Monday
with the colder valleys have a chance of seeing low to mid 30s. Dry
air means lots of sunshine Sunday and Monday; a warming trend will
begin Monday afternoon with a high close to 70. The next chance of
rain will come during the latter half of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: You will need a jacket for the high school football
games tomorrow night. The kickoff temperature will be close to 50
degrees, with temperatures falling into the upper 40s by the final
whistle. The sky will be cloudy, but there is no significant chance of
rain. On Saturday, Alabama hosts South Carolina for homecoming at the
Capstone; the sky will be mostly clear at kickoff (6:45 p.m.) with a
temperature close to 49 degrees; expect mid 40s by the final whistle.
Auburn hosts Kentucky (6:30 p.m. kickoff) with similar conditions; the
temperature will be around 50 at kickoff, falling into the 40s during
the game. The sky will be clear. UAB will travel to Oxford,
Mississippi to play Ole Miss Saturday night (6:00 p.m. kickoff)… the
sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature of 49 degrees, falling
into the mid 40s by the fourth quarter.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the month of October is up
to 5.73", and for the year the tally is 58.08". That gives us a
surplus of almost 15 inches (14.97").

...Gloomy, Gloomy, Gloomy...

BIG CHANGES FOR THE WEEKEND: I have always loved rain. I love a rainy
day. I even call myself a rain-monger. Now I am doing some soul
searching and am about to change my mind about so much rain.

Early today Brian Peters did a study of the history of September and
October rain for the Birmingham area. At the airport where official
records are kept, October has totalled 6.17 inches as of this morning.
His study showed that we are a long way from the wettest October ever
which was almost 12 inches in 1995. That can be directly blamed on
Hurricane Opal. Like September, if this October enters the top 10
wettest ones, it will do it without the help of a tropical storm. The
full story from Brian is on the 33/40 BLOG.
Rain was widespread across Alabama overnight and lingered in the south
much of this morning and early afternoon. There were some cases of
flash flooding during the night, but it did not turn out to be a
significant flood event as we earlier expected. Here is a small sample
of 24-hour rain amounts:

1.57 Cullman Airport
1.06 Ft. Payne Airport
0.81 Cottondale (now 62.29 for the year so far)
1.13 Scrougout (an amazing 67.05 so far this year.)

NOW WE TALK ABOUT SOME RELIEF: Not immediately mind you, but the
situation is looking much better for the weekend. We may see a few
showers around tonight, but mostly low clouds and some fog and maybe
even some drizzle. Translation: dreary. More showers and some
thunderstorms will occur Thursday and then Thursday night noticeably
cooler air forces its way into our area. We only expect a high of 58
Friday. There could be a little early morning drizzle. Saturday should
have about half sunshine and clouds, but quite breezy and cool. When
you get up Sunday morning, if you live in a low-lying area in North or
NE Alabama, if you look real closely you might see a trace of frost.
We are calling for a low of 39 Sunday morning at Birmingham Airport,
which means Pinson may have about 36 and some of the NE Alabama cold
spots 34 to 36. If the wind stays too strong it will negate those
temperatures. Daytime highs over the weekend will be rather cool.

NORTH AS FAR AS YOU CAN GO: We take a look at Barrow, Alaska to begin
our global roaming today. The sun will not rise tomorrow until 9:50.
Barrow is now losing 10 minutes a day as they head toward a long
stretch of 24-hour darkness. Big, big storm on the west coast. Surely
there were a lot of mudslides in the last 24 hours because as much as
10 inches of rain fell in the Southern California mountains. Wind
gusts to 71 mph as Reno.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We never did hear thunder last night, so
Little Miss Molly actually got a good amount of sleep.
We have had a number of play sessions with the little Yorkie, Dino,
her first love. Yesterday, for the first time ever, Molly showed some
jealousy. I was down on the ground petting Dino. He turned upside down
for a belly rub. A minute later, Molly charged in and made him move so
she turned over for a belly rub. She was jealous. I wish I had 50
acres fenced in to adopt 50 dogs, giving each one a full acre to roam
and play. Would have to sell my house, my beloved 96 Olds to feed
them, but I sure would have fun. Every day now when I go out to the
mailbox, I take Molly in my arms and stand outside for a few minutes
so she can see the whole world from an elevation of 6 feet. She scans
the whole street and does not miss anything. I cannot imagine looking
at the world from only 6 inches off the ground as she does. Life goes
on.

...Wet Today; A Cool Change By Friday...

MAJOR OVERNIGHT RAIN EVENT: We will maintain a good chance of rain and
storms this morning following a long night of heavy rain and flash
flooding across the northern half of Alabama. Flash flood watches and
warnings have been required, and the threat of flooding will continue
through the morning hours. The rain will taper off during the midday
hours as a wave of low pressure on a stalled front over Alabama moves
to the east. Only scattered light rain is expected late tonight and
tonight.

TOMORROW: A strong upper wave will spin up yet another surface wave on
the stalled front, meaning rain will increase across the state once
again. It looks like any strong storms will be confined to the
southern quarter of Alabama, and the rain tomorrow over North Alabama
won't be especially heavy, but amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are still
possible before it all ends tomorrow night. Some communities will wind
up with storm totals of over 6 inches this week.

A CHILL BY FRIDAY: A deep upper trough will develop over the eastern
U.S. at the end of the week, and the coldest air so far this season
will rush into the state Friday. It will be raw day with lingering
clouds, a little morning drizzle in spots, a gusty north wind, and
temperatures holding in the 50s all day. The weekend will be cool and
dry; we will forecast gradual clearing on Saturday, with sunshine back
in full force by Sunday. Saturday will be chilly, and parts of North
Alabama could actually stay in the 40s most of the day where clouds
are slow in moving out. Most Alabama communities will be close to 40
degrees at daybreak Sunday.
Monday morning could work out to be the coldest morning, when the wind
will be light along with a clear sky. Again, most places will be close
to 40, but the colder valleys could see mid to upper 30s with some
risk of scattered light frost. A warming trend begins Monday afternoon
as we rise into the low 70s with a good supply of sunshine.

CALIFORNIA STORM: In a telephone chat with our own Bill Murray last
night, he was approaching Sacramento after driving down from Red Bluff
and he could hardly keep his car on the road due to howling winds. Red
Bluff had winds to 53 mph with 1.52 inches of rain. Sacramento 2.78
inches of rain so far and San Francisco 2.84 inches. There were gusts
to around 64 along the Central California Coast yesterday afternoon.
Officials in Southern California are frantically trying to prepare for
some possible mud slides of historic proportions because of extremely
heavy rain falling over burned off woodlands and hills. This includes
the Greater Los Angeles area. This type of storm is consistent with El
Nino conditions, which we are now experiencing.

ARKANSAS FLOODS: Numerous roads were closed last night in Dallas
County, Arkansas including highway 229 north of Fordyce. Almost 4
inches of rain so far at Arkadelphia and Texarkana had 3.64. At
several counties this afternoon, over half of the county roads were
under water.

...An Alabama Rain Forest...

GLOOMY, WET AND STORMY: Those are all the adjectives I can think of
that describes our weather of late and what is still ahead down the
road. But try to keep your chin up, because we are in for some
delightful autumn weather over the weekend, so much so that you may
have to reach in the back of the closet and pull out a sweater or
jacket that has been out of service since last spring. Not only will
the weekend be dry and pleasant, if you do not mind the cool nights,
but Monday and Tuesday look nice also.
That will give us a four-day stretch with no rain and it could not
have come at a better time. The Alabama countryside is soaked and it
is not very receptive to soaking in additional rain. Rivers are in
flood in some areas, creeks are high, puddles of water are everywhere,
and the Alabama population is becoming irritable.

There seems to always be bad news with good news. The bad news starts
tonight when more showers and thunderstorms move in from the west.
They have been moving in from the west like a long convoy seemingly
for weeks. Tonight a low-pressure area will be moving eastward along
an old front across Central Alabama. This ill be the instigator for
numerous showers and thunderstorms. They were already in progress this
afternoon across NW Louisiana, much of Arkansas and North Mississippi.
They will be spreading into Alabama tonight, especially over the north
half.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH: The National Weather Service in Birmingham posted
a Flash Flood Watch that will be in effect until tomorrow afternoon.
This watch includes numerous counties in North/Central and Central
Alabama, including all of the bigger cities like Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham and Anniston. Flash flooding is likely as those big storms
move across the area. This will be especially true late tonight and
tomorrow. The NWS thinks that 2 to 3 inches of additional rain is
possible with locally heavier amounts. We certainly agree. The NAM
weather model suggests 3.76 inches of rain for Birmingham between now
and Thursday. Sounds reasonable.

THE GOOD OLD USA: A big strong high-pressure area for so early in the
season extends from Central Canada to Missouri and Illinois. Much of
the Northern U.S. has had an exceptionally cool autumn so far. But the
big story is out West where a major storm was approaching. Bill Murray
is in Red Bluff, California and he was looking forward to heavy rain
and winds over 50 today. The big storm will affect much of California--
even the San Francisco area. Gusts to 63 mph have been reported in
that general area this morning and 2.32 inches of rain at Palo Alto,
California. Coldest this morning was 14 in Hibbing, Minnesota and 18
at Arctic Village, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have said many times that when I put
the leash on Little Miss Molly and step out the door, it is an
adventure and I never know what to expect. Late last night,
immediately out the door, the CR (Community Rabbit) was sitting under
a tree near our house. Fortunately, Molly did not see it otherwise I
would have had a crick in my neck today. The rabbit ran so fast it was
a blur like it had been shot from a cannon. It dove under the fence by
our house in only about 3 seconds. We also encountered a large hawk a
few days ago that suddenly fluttered out of the hedgerow. We think he
was trying to capture a small bird. Life goes on.

...Occasional Rain Through Thursday...

AIN'T NO SUNSHINE: Just like the Bill Withers song, there "ain't
no sunshine" in our future for the rest of the week. And, rain will
continue at times, with more potential for some flooding by tonight
and tomorrow morning. During the day today, we expect occasional,
mostly light rain showers, but the rain will be heavier and more
widespread tonight and tomorrow morning as a wave of low pressure
forms on a stalled front nearby. We are projecting rain totals of 1 to
3 inches from midnight tonight through 12:00 noon tomorrow, and
additional flash flooding is very possible during the night with the
soil totally saturated.

MID-WEEK: Showers will diminish tomorrow afternoon, but one round of
rain and storms is likely Thursday as low pressure forms again right
on top of us. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain is very possible Thursday,
once again posing a threat of flash flooding for our state. The good
news is that the chance of strong to severe storms on Thursday has
diminished over the northern half of Alabama as it looks like the air
will be relatively stable.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Rain will taper off greatly Thursday night,
but we believe the clouds will linger all day Friday, and maybe even
into part of the day Saturday before we finally see some sunshine by
Saturday afternoon. And, temperatures will be much cooler at the end
of the week. Looks like we hold in the 50s all day Friday with clouds
and a chilly north wind averaging 10 to 20 mph. Our weekend will be
dry, but very cool. Despite a clearing sky on Saturday, we are
projecting highs only in the mid 50s. The coolest morning will come
early Sunday; most places will see a low close to 40 degrees, but it
sure looks like the coldest valleys across North Alabama will hit the
mid to upper 30s with some potential for scattered light frost for the
first time this season. Dry weather should last into the first two
days of next week with a gradual warming trend.

MONDAY'S SOAKERS: Birmingham's official rain total yesterday was
2.74", which established a new daily rain record for October 12.
Other rain totals included 2.51" at Bessemer, 2.40" at Morris,
2.28" at Jasper, 2.06" at Inverness, 2.01" at Gadsden, and1.85"
at Chelsea. Radar data suggested rain totals of nearly 5 inches over
parts of Tallapoosa and Chambers Counties in East Alabama.

BIG TIME COLD FOR OCTOBER: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was 16
below zero at Chandalar Lake, Alaska; Polebridge, Montana dropped to
13 below. Denver finally dug out of the deep freeze yesterday with a
high of 51.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Strange October Weather...

SINGING IN THE RAIN: We might as well relax and sing. We sure cannot
do anything about the weather. We are awestruck like everybody else by
the way this October is acting. After being in weather for what seems
like a century, I do not remember an October just like this one unless
there was a tropical storm involved.

Sure would be interesting to know how many tons of rain fell on
Alabama overnight and today. It would shock us all. But we have to
measure that in inches and many parts of the state were drenched with
about all the water the soil could absorb. Bottom line: the rest of it
was runoff and started making its way back to the Gulf of Mexico. We
will try to post some more rain amounts on the 33/40 BLOG later this
afternoon, but numerous locations received between 2 and 3 inches
which triggered some flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch was issued late last night for much of North and
Central Alabama. The Tennessee Valley counties were cleared of that
this afternoon. In the Birmingham area, there was flash flooding this
morning at a number of locations—unfortunately during the morning
drive.

NOW WHAT? More of the same, although the showers and storms will come
in clusters or groups Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday looks
like it could be our stormiest day with showers and storms, including
some possible strong storms. We may have to deal with a few severe
thunderstorms on that day. Why Thursday? That is the day that a low-
pressure area will be tracking across our part of the country and
pulling down some cooler air from the north. By Saturday, any showers
should be limited to morning and brisk NW wind will make you want to
wear a light wrap. Looking ahead to the weekend, do not be surprised
to see a low in the lower 40s by Sunday morning and possibly a 38 in
the NE Alabama valleys.

RAIN SCORECARD: At Birmingham Airport, the numbers for 2009 are
simply amazing. The 2.54 inches received since midnight swelled the
October total to 4.89 inches and the year to 57.24. Our surplus is now
an amazing 14.42 inches. That is almost a three-month supply.

THE GOOD OLD USA: Lots of interesting weather around this great
country. This morning the temperature dropped to 2 below zero at St.
Mary, Montana. I am almost sure that is the first time this season for
a sub-zero temperature. That is not a high mountain station. The
lowest in Alaska was 25 at Barrow. In Billings, Montana, the first 11
days of October have averaged the coldest ever, in fact, over 6
degrees colder than any other record. Over the weekend, there was 17
inches of snow at Virginia Dale, Colorado and 10 inches at
Chugwater, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was around 3:00 a.m. My little pal
heard heavy rain pattering on the roof. Believe it or not,
she has learned to connect rain with thunder and lightning. She
immediately started petitioning for one of us to get up so she could
go to one of her safe places. So we are short on sleep. Little Miss
Molly has had several play sessions over the weekend with the little
Yorkie from up the street. Tom Taylor, the human grandfather of little
Dino, took a nice digital photograph of Molly and Dino together
Sunday. They are inseparable. Life goes on.

...Flooding Threat Returns...

Greetings from Red Bluff, California! As I settled into my seat on a
plane in Birmingham on Sunday morning, the flight attendant noticed
that I was looking at weather maps. We talked about the weather for a
few minutes. She was from Austin, and she said that she would never
complain about the rain again after experiencing the severe drought
they are enduring right now. I feel the same way. I can remember
wistfully looking at the weather maps for any sign of rain in the
summer of 2007, only to see promising storm systems evaporate as they
came toward Alabama. I resolved to be grateful for every drop of rain
that comes our way.

WET FORECAST: I do hope those rains don't come in megadoses like
they did a few weeks ago. Indications are that we could see a large
area of 3-5 inch amounts across the northern half of the state over
the next five days. Some spots could see more, of course and we will
have to monitor the potential for flooding. Let's delve into the
forecast…

FLASH FLOOD WATCH: A southwesterly upper flow continues over Alabama
and the Deep South today. This moist flow is picking up moisture both
from the Pacific and the Gulf. The low level flow will become
southeasterly today behind a warm front being driven northward as the
subtropical high moves further east. Disturbances in the flow will
result in batches of showers and storms. One to two inches of rain
will fall today across the area and flash flood watches are in effect
through late this afternoon.

TOMORROW AND BEYOND: We should get a little break tomorrow night
through much of Tuesday, but confidence in that forecast is low.
Another disturbance will bring a good chance o rain and storms Tuesday
night and Wednesday. Then, as a low pressure system strengthens and
moves north of us on Thursday, we will find ourselves in the
cyclone's warm sector and will see increasing showers and storms.
Some of those storms may be strong to severe Thursday night. Friday
will be blustery and colder. Drier weather will settle in for the
weekend.

TROPICS: Still nothing of any significance in the tropical Atlantic.
The remnants of Henri show no promise. The disturbance moving along
the northern coast of South America has little chance of developing.
The global models are not bullish on any developing tropical systems
over the next two weeks.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, is our first annual rant show. It should be
crazy. Upcoming guests include: Bill Read, Chuck Doswell, Tim
Marshall, Gary England, Roger Hill and BBC Weather Presenter Hannah
Bayman. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com
.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Typhoon Tip in the Northwest Pacific Ocean
achieved the dubious distinction of being the strongest tropical
cyclone ever measured on earth. It was measured to have a central
pressure of 870 mb and estimated surface sustained winds of 190 mph as
it swept through the Luzon Strait. Follow my weather history tweets

...More Rain In the Cards...

It's hard to believe that just two years ago, we were in the middle
of an intense drought across much of the state of Alabama. 100% of
the state is drought free now, with not a single square inch of land
even in the abnormally dry category. Quite a contrast from even a
year ago, when only 7% of the state was not at least abnormally dry
according to the Drought Monitor.

AND MORE RAIN IS ON THE WAY: Over the weekend, each time that I have
looked at a new 5 day expected rainfall maps from the
Hydrometeorological Prediction Center folks at the National Weather
Service up in Washington, the totals over Alabama have gone up. Now
the forecast covers the period through Friday morning, and the totals
are impressive. The entire northern half of the state could get 3-5
inches, with some 5+ inch amounts over Northeast Alabama. This will
push our rainfall surpluses for the year even higher.

Clouds will increase this evening and rain showers will show up
overnight as our recent front comes north as a warm front. Rain will
be likely on Monday, along with a chance of a storm. Look for nearly
a 100% chance of rain. It won't rain all day, but nearly everyone
will get wet. Another disturbance and approaching front on Tuesday
will bring another batch of rain and storms. The front may get far
enough south to give us a short break from the rain on Wednesday.

STRONG STORMS: A powerful low pressure system passing to our north
will help the atmosphere to reload on Thursday with showers and storms
developing. Storms will be likely Thursday night into early Friday
morning and some of them could be strong to severe. It will be
blustery and colder on Friday. Then you can expect dry and cool
weather for the weekend.

TROPICS: Still nothing of any consequence in the Atlantic basin,
tropically speaking. The remnants of Henri continue moving west
northwestward, located to the north of eastern Cuba. Environmental
conditions are hostile and development is unlikely. The global models
do not indicate any significant tropical disturbances over the next
fifteen days.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all
about weather. Last week: sociologist Eve Gruntfest from the Social
Sciences Woven into Meteorology project joined us to talk about the
next big steps in improving the warning process: understanding and
working with how people respond. This week it is our first annual
rant show. The panel will get some pet peeves off their chests. Go
to www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter
@weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: A Cirrus SR-20 plane owned and piloted by New
York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle crashed into an apartment building in
New York City along the East River. Lidle and his flight instructor
were apparently sightseeing when a stiff wind blew the plane into the
building as Lidle was attempting a tight turn off the river. The
plane fell thirty stories to the ground after crashing into the
building and starting a fire.

...Nice Looking Sunday...

A nice looking Sunday is in store across Central Alabama as a little
drier air works into the state behind a couple of reinforcing cold
fronts. Skies will be partly cloudy with mild temperatures in the 70s.
Clouds will begin to increase late in the day as we flip back to a wet
pattern.

RAIN TO RETURN: Upper levels winds over Alabama and the Deep South
remain out of the southwest, and this will allow a slug of moisture to
move out of the western Gulf of Mexico. As it does, rain chances will
go back up starting tonight. Expect an area of rain to move across the
area tomorrow morning. You will feel that humidity again, and that
increased moisture will keep showers in the forecast Monday night.
Look for additional areas of rain in the Tuesday and Wednesday
timeframe. By Wednesday night, we could see an additional 2-4 inches
of rain across parts of North Central Alabama. Wow. We will have to
start looking for potential flooding problems again. Dewpoints may be
back in the 70 degree range by midweek, which is really moist.

AND THAT'S NOT ALL: It looks like a very strong trough will start to
develop over the Central U.S. on Wednesday, triggering the development
of a potent low pressure system over northwestern Arkansas by late in
the day. It will slide eastward, accompanied by heavy rains to the
south of the low. Rain and thunderstorms will be likely on Thursday,
with the potential for heavy rain and severe weather. Friday will be
blustery and sharply cooler with temperatures holding steady around 60
during the day and a biting northwest wind. High pressure will build
in for Saturday and Sunday, giving us some fine fall weekend weather
finally. TROPICS: The Tropical Atlantic continues to be extremely
quiet. No real signs of tropical development in the Atlantic over the
next two weeks.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: A little switch in the schedule:
legendary radar expert Les Lemon has been pushed back to January
because of commitments he has out of the country. It's our first
annual rant show this week, followed by Bill Read, Director of the
National Hurricane Center live from the National Weather Association
meeting in Norfolk on October 19th. We will have an AM Weather reunion
on October 26th. Dr. Chuck Doswell on November 2nd. Tim Marshall on
November 9th. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains. Email
your weather rants this week to email@weatherbrains.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora spent eleven days in October
1963 wreaking havoc along her path through the Caribbean. The storm
brought 170 mph winds and an eleven foot storm surge to Haiti, killing
5,000 people, making it the island nation's most destructive
hurricane. The slow moving storm would also brings 3 days of
torrential rainfalls of 15-20 inches to Cuba. The floods and attendant
mudslides kill 1300 people in that island nation. Castro would refuse
the United States offers of help.
