..Nice Rains Here...

For the most part, yesterday's storm system left nice gentle rains
here across Central Alabama. Amounts varied greatly, with the areas
that saw the heaviest thunderstorms picking up the heavier amounts of
course.

CENTRAL ALABAMA RAINFALL AMOUNTS: Almost every major
reporting station saw one inch of rain in the past twenty four hours.
Tuscaloosa was the lone exception with 0.77 inches. 1.24 fell at the
Birmingham Airport. 1.67 fell at Calera. Pinson picked up 1.00
inch. I picked up 1.38 inches in Trussville.

MAJOR FLOODING: Beneficial rains in South Alabama? Not
so much, at least in some areas. As of 8 a.m., 8.11 inches of rain
had fallen at the Mobile Airport. Now for some even more amazing
numbers: 11.20 inches fell in nine hours at a CoCoRAHS observer gauge
just west of the Airport. 8.39 inches fell in Tillmans Corner, 8.25
inches in Spanish Fort and 7.58 inches in Saraland. Severe flooding
was reported, especially in the Saraland and Prichard areas. Numerous
water rescues had to be performed overnight.

TONIGHT: Low pressure will move along the stalled front
to our south through the afternoon, continuing rains over southeastern
sections of Central Alabama, mainly south of I-85. Clearing will
continue to progress southeastward as the front gets moving. The
clear skies and ample low level moisture will allow low clouds and
dense fog to form overnight. Temperatures will fall into the upper
40s to near 50 by morning.

NEARLY PERFECT SUNDAY: The only fly in the ointment in
Sunday's bid to be a perfect weather day will be those low clouds and
fog. Skies should start to clear by midmorning with full sun by early
afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the upper 70s for daytime highs.

THE WEEK AHEAD: On Monday, the wedge will try to work
its way into eastern Alabama. This will set up the chance for a few
showers, mainly across eastern sections. Our winds will become more
southerly by Monday night and our moisture levels will increase. By
Tuesday morning, low pressure will be over southern Missouri headed
northeast toward the Great Lakes. But the front will run out of steam
as the upper level support moves out too quickly and the front will
stall to our north. Showers and storms will droop into the Tennessee
Valley, but the rest of the state should remain dry until a stronger
low pushes a front in here late Thursday night into Friday. This
system may stall over Central Alabama, waiting for another system that
will keep us wet into Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1936: The United State's second
deadliest tornado outbreak ever occurred as seventeen tornadoes struck
from Mississippi to the Carolinas on April 5th and 6th. The deadliest
tornado in the outbreak struck Tupelo, Mississippi, killing 216
people. One of the survivors in Tupelo was a baby named Elvis
Presley. Gainesville, Georgia had 203 fatalities and 934 injuries in a
tornado that occurred early on the morning of the 6th.

...Rain Departs...

An active severe weather day on Friday across Alabama with numerous
supercell thunderstorms ahead of a squall line that moved through
during the afternoon hours. The activity started with a bang at late
morning, with one of the most damaging storms striking eastern Winston
County over to the City of Cullman. Significant damage was reported
in Cullman from what straight line winds or possibly a tornado
Numerous radar indications of tornadoes were observed as well as
funnel clouds and a few actually tornadoes. NWS survey teams will be
out on Saturday to survey the damage and determine how much was
because of tornadoes. Fortunately, no major injuries or fatalities
were reported.

TODAY: A passing upper disturbance brought rain and a
little elevated thunder to Central Alabama again overnight. As this
disturbance slides to the east, it will allow a fairly strong cold
front to finally push through the area. Rain and storms will exit
southeastern sections during the late morning. Clearing will
gradually work its way southeastward, reaching the I-59 corridor
during the afternoon. Skies will become clear during the evening,
with patchy dense fog forming.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like an absolute stunner of a
day, with a crisp start in the 40s, that patchy fog burning off and a
sunny and warm afternoon. Temperatures will top out in the upper
70s. Near perfect weather.

THE WEEK AHEAD: On Monday, our infamous easterly wedge
will try to weasel its way into East Alabama, but I don't think it
will have much success. If it is more successful, we will probably
have to reduce our forecasted temperatures, currently projected at 80
degrees in middle and western sections. It should be a little cooler
over the east. There could be a light shower, especially over eastern
sections. By Tuesday, the wedge will be retreating and out winds will
become more southeasterly, allowing moisture levels to rise.
Meanwhile, strong low pressure will be moving into the Great Lakes
region. The quality of the moisture return will dictate whether we
deal with severe weather again. For now, we will call for showers and
storms. The weakening front will settle into Alabama Tuesday night,
serving as a focus for more showers and storms on Wednesday before it
head back north as a warm front on Thursday, spelling more showers and
storms for us. It looks like another big wet, stormy system will
affect Alabama starting next Friday night, giving us a wet Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1956: The first tornado warning based on
radar indications is issued for the Bryan and College Station area of
TX. SELS issued a tornado forecast for parts of central
and eastern Texas. This prompted the operators of a Texas A&M weather
radar to turn on their set and monitor storms for the characteristic
hook echo. When one was observed on the radar moving toward the Bryan/
College Station area, the police and local radio station were warned.
Two tornadoes did touch down in the Bryan area.

..A Stormy Friday...

NICER WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND: It has been a stormy Friday across
Alabama. Strong thunderstorms had already moved into the NW counties
before daybreak. A line of storms has been pushing SE much of the day,
while other storms developed and moved NE across the state.

These storms have been dumping heavy rain and several of
those became severe. The NWS issued a Tornado Watch for a large part
of Central Alabama until 6:00 this evening. That could be extended,
because we expect thunderstorms to be around tonight also and even
into Saturday morning.

An individual thunderstorm developed in West Alabama and
moved NE across SE Winston County into Cullman County around midday.
Trees and power lines were knocked down at Arley in SE Winston County
near Smith Lake. That same thunderstorm moved directly across the city
of Cullman. At this writing, reports are still incomplete, but
apparently there was some significant damage in Cullman, including
near the downtown area around lunchtime. Power was out to a good part
of the area. Trees were down. Some streets were blocked and there was
even a gas leak. There were confusing reports about injuries. We have
seen no confirmed reports of those.

Meanwhile, up in NW Alabama, there was some flash
flooding around Rogersville. We do not have any rain totals yet, but
we feel sure that some communities got well over an inch.

LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD: We may still have some of those
pesky storms around early Saturday morning, but old man sunshine
should force his way in during the afternoon. Sunday
looks like a model day with the humidity a little lower. Early morning
temperatures will be in the mid 40s and afternoon highs in the upper
70s. Monday should be similar and most of Tuesday should be dry. A few
showers may show up late Tuesday with a better chance of showers and
thunderstorms next Wednesday and Thursday.

ELSEWHERE: Lots of damage in Arkansas overnight from
tornadoes and very heavy rain, as well as severe thunderstorms. One
tornado moved directly across the airport in North Little Rock
overturning some planes and damaging some buildings around the
National Weather Service Office. A lot of very heavy rain involved
with those. Even this afternoon, some very strong thunderstorms
continued over Mississippi and North Louisiana. Those were dumping
very heavy rain also and those are some of the ones that will have to
move across Alabama tonight and early tomorrow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly cannot say that she
has not received a lot of attention in the last couple of days. She
has been featured in a number of ballgames that lasted long enough for
her to get completely pooped. When she gets completely tired, she goes
from full speed ahead, then suddenly puts on her brakes and finds a
place to rest. Most of the time, she seizes my recliner or my other
soft chair or just plops down on the carpet. She knows how to play and
rest and have fun. Life goes on.
