...Rain To Continue...

The low pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico flared briefly last
night as it crossed over warm waters of the Loop Current. As it
continued north northwestward overnight, it weakened a bit before
moving inland late this morning near the Alabama/Mississippi border.
Rain and thunderstorms were widespread along the coast, with brisk
easterly winds averaging 15-20 mph and 30 mph gusts. Rain and
thunderstorms will continue to plague coastal sections of the Florida
Panhandle into tonight as they remain in the crosshairs of the inflow
for the low pressure system. This area of heavy rain and storms will
slide westward into the Alabama coastal areas later today. Rain and
storms will be a good bet along the coast through tomorrow. Rain
chances will lessen as we head through the coming week.

CLOSER TO HOME: Moisture has been moving northward through the
morning hours into Central Alabama as the low moves inland. This rain
will continue to increase through the afternoon and will continue into
the overnight. A nice easterly breeze will continue, thanks to the
low, diminishing some tonight. Highs this afternoon will be in the
70s. Low tonight will be in the 70s. Sunday will feature a good
chance of showers and storms as Alabama remains in the favorable
eastern semicircle of the low while it moves through the Mississippi
Delta and toward Arkansas. We will remain in this soupy airmass as we
head into Memorial Day. This means more scattered showers and
storms. It is more of the same for Tuesday, but rain chances will be
lessening each day, returning to more of a normal summertime pattern
by late in the week.

BASEBALL WEATHER: Many times, we have really hot weather for the SEC
Baseball Tournament, and while that is not a problem this year,
dodging scattered showers is going to be today and tomorrow. We will
just have to keep an eye to the radar as we get the tournament
finished. The Regions Park playing surface and Barons groundskeepers
are both excellent and the field can stand up to some decent rains and
still be playable. That's amazing when you have 13 games in five
days. Rain chances will be backing off to more normal levels by
Wednesday as Rickwood Field plays host to the 14th Annual Rickwood
Classic at the treasured shrine to the national pastime in
Birmingham's West End.

VORTEX 2: If you want to put a complete end to severe weather across
the Plains states of the middle United States, all you have to do is
get a bunch of grants and announce the largest severe weather study in
history. It happened in 1994 in the first VORTEX and it is happening
again with VORTEX2. A large ridge of high pressure across the Central
part of the country has put the clamps on severe weather for the time
being. In fact, no significant severe weather is expected during the
week ahead in the target area.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Dense fog on I-68 in Garrett County, Maryland
was a principal cause in a massive eighty car chain reaction accident
that killed two people and sent over ninety people to the hospital.
The series of accidents occurred in about a ten minute period at mid-
afternoon. It started in the eastbound lanes of the interstate when
visibilities dropped to less than thirty feet. Two accidents
involving two vehicles and five vehicles caused cars on the westbound
side of the highway to slow down. This triggered a massive seventy
three car pileup in the westbound lanes. The interstate was closed
until 11 a.m. the next morning, making Memorial Day holiday traffic a
nightmare.

...Rain A Good Bet Today...

Yesterday was a great day to leave the office early and head to
beautiful Regions Park to take in a session of the SEC Baseball
Tournament. A shower passed over just before the game between Florida
and Arkansas, but the weather was mostly perfect otherwise. Mostly
cloudy and comfortably mild with a wonderful easterly breeze. Throw
in the verdant green field, the smell of the popcorn and hot dogs and
the pop of the
leather and it made for a perfect afternoon. More great baseball
today and Sunday. Go check it out.

TROPICAL TROUBLE: We have been tracking low pressure in the Gulf of
Mexico most of this week. That low finally started to get some
organized thunderstorms last night when it was about 200 miles south
of the Florida Panhandle. The low is approaching the Mississippi
coast this morning and will move into the Magnolia State during the
day. The low will continue to pump lots of moist air into Alabama and
rain will be a fairly good bet across the area today. While rain
chances will be near 100 percent today, it will be a case of scattered
showers and storms forming in loosely organized bands

MOVING FORWARD IN TIME: Rain and storms will be likely again on
Sunday. As the low moves further northwestward and into Arkansas by
Monday and Tuesday, our rain chances will gradually lessen. We will
still be in a warm, moist atmosphere for the foreseeable future. This
means scattered mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms
through the rest of the week.

SHUTTLE LANDING: The crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis got an extra
day in space thanks to the disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico. Good
weather is not a give this morning for the first landing opportunity
at the Kennedy Space Center at 8:16 a.m. CDT, but it should be much
improved over today. The alternate landing site is Edwards AFB in
California. Weather there should be clear, but there will be strong
winds. The shuttle has enough provisions to stay aloft until Monday.
But let's get it home today. After having watched a launch in person,
it seems that every shuttle mission is personal.

RICKWOOD CLASSIC: One of the most special events in sports will be
Wednesday at Birmingham's historic Rickwood Field as the 14th annual
Rickwood Classic is held. The Barons will play host to the
Mississippi Braves at 12:35 p.m. Grab as many fans of America's
favorite pastime as you can and enjoy an afternoon at America's oldest
ballpark and a truly special temple of the sport.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: A persistent frontal system over northeast
Iowa and southwest Wisconsin over three days in late May 2004 produced
several rounds of thunderstorms that dumped as much as 8-10 inches of
rain on the area. Severe and widespread flash flooding resulted. A
record flood crest was observed on the Volga river at Elkport, Iowa.
A dike broke on Elk Creek, inundating the small town. It was not the
first flood to hit the area. Major floods also occurred in 1908,
1916, 1922 and 1999. The town decided to accept a FEMA buyout two
years later and the entire town was bulldozed. In many cases,
mitigation is a far superior solution to attempting to rebuild or
protect destroyed communities in areas vulnerable to natural hazards.

AN UNSETTLED WEEKEND: We are still dealing with the same main weather
feature that we have been discussing for days. Let us update that
discussion quickly and we will go on to mention how it will affect
Alabama. The low-pressure center was over the Central Gulf of Mexico
this morning almost exactly where weather models had predicted for the
last four days. I have sort of a love/hate relationship with weather
models, but there is no way I could do without them. By Saturday
morning, the low will be near the SE Louisiana coast and by Sunday it
should be over Mississippi and Louisiana and not as well defined.
Meanwhile, this system will keep pumping moist air from SE to NW out
of the Gulf of Mexico and from Florida. This does not look good if you
like lots of sunshine. We think you will see more clouds than sun all
the way into early next week and there will be occasional periods of
showers and thunderstorms. Some of our computerized guidance that we
always take with several grains of salt indicate as much as 3 inches
of rain for the Birmingham area between now and early next week. The
NAM model points to a storm total of 1.47 inches. That may be a little
more realistic. There is a chance that SW Alabama from about
Livingston down to Mobile could get a storm total of around 4 inches.
As much as 5.70 inches is a possibility for East/Central Mississippi.

Here in Central Alabama we will have to deal with these showers and
possible thunderstorms every day. We believe the weekend and extending
into Monday will be the time for most of the showers.

There is a big plus to all of this. The cloud cover and showers will
hold temperatures down somewhat. Highs tomorrow should be in the mid
70s and the lower 80s into early next week.

AT THE BEACH: Does not look good. Showers and thunderstorms will be
numerous at times all the way through Monday and lesser in number by
Tuesday. It is entirely possible that Mobile, Gulf Shores and Dauphin
Island could receive between 3 and 4 inches of rain over the next
three days. It will also be windy at times, which means that the surf
will be quite rough, maybe even some riptides.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Did you know that if you overlaid a map of Iraq on the
lower 48 states of the USA that it would only cover a little over 5%
of our country. Baghdad is the capitol, of course. Their average high
temperature in January is 61 and low of 39. In mid-summer it is a
completely different story. Their average high for July and August is
a blistering 109 as compared to 91 in Birmingham. That city only gets
6.10 inches of rain a year compared to 54 inches for Birmingham. It
was 97 in Baghdad tonight and it should be 107 tomorrow. As Memorial
Day approaches, we should be especially thoughtful of our military
there and in other places and say many sincere prayers, not only for
the troops but their families.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have had a number of requests lately to
see an updated photo of my little 9-pound pal known as Miss Molly. I
will try to post one of those on our Weather BLOG one day next week. I
ran into a gentleman at a Trussville restaurant last Sunday. I did not
that he knew me, but he immediately asked about the Old Crow Motel.
That is a tall, dilapidated tree in its last years where Little Miss
Molly and I on our very first walk together nearly 7 years ago
witnessed two old crows in a vicious argument at dawn. We feel they
eventually divorced. We immediately named that tree the Old Crow
Motel. Life goes on.

...Occasoinal Weekend Showers...

TROPICAL AIR: A broad area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico
continues to circulate moist air into Alabama this morning, and that
will set the stage for occasional showers through the Memorial Day
weekend. On the positive side, we don't expect any problems with
severe weather or really heavy rain around here, but a shower is
possible at just about any time with this kind of airmass, and the
northward moving low in the Gulf. Afternoon highs will be in the 77 to
80 degree range for most communities.

TO THE SOUTH: Heavier rain is likely along the Gulf coast, rain totals
of three inches are generally expected for the coast from Panama City
west to Gulf Shores, with the potential for rough surf continuing
along with gusty east winds. There will be some breaks in the rain,
however, along the coast the weekend, and just maybe even a few peeks
of sunshine along the way. Afternoon highs will be close to 80
degrees, with the sea water temperature remaining at 73 degrees at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

NEXT WEEK: The Gulf low will move inland, into Louisiana, late in the
weekend, and Alabama will remain on the moist east side of the
circulation. So, showers and storms are likely Monday statewide. Deep
tropical moisture will stay in place through mid-week, so scattered to
numerous showers and storm are likely on Tuesday and Wednesday as
well. The showers should thin out by Thursday and Friday as drier air
tries to slip into Alabama from the north.

NOAA HURRICANE FORECAST: In its initial outlook for the 2009 Atlantic
hurricane season (which was released yesterday), which runs from June
through November, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for a 50
percent probability of a near-normal season, a 25 percent probability
of an above-normal season and a 25 percent probability of a below-
normal season. Global weather patterns are imposing a greater
uncertainty in the 2009 hurricane season outlook than in recent years.
Forecasters say there is a 70 percent chance of having nine to 14
named storms, of which four to seven could become hurricanes,
including one to three major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5). NOAA's
seasonal hurricane outlook does not project where and when any of
these storms may hit. Landfall is dictated by weather patterns in
place at the time the storm approaches.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Tornado destroys the town of Saragosa Texas. 30
dead and 11 injured in town of only 183 people. 85% of the buildings
in the town were wiped off the face of the earth. Many of the victims
were parents or grandparents of 4-year-old children at a head start
recognition ceremony.

...Showers Off and On...

BREEZY AND MUCH MORE HUMID: In a way we are thankful for the brisk
east and SE wind, because it makes the higher humidity more tolerable.
Moisture continues to flow into Alabama from the east and SE. We can
blame our old friend, the Gulf of Mexico, for everything. On the
weather map today, a low-pressure system both at the surface and aloft
was centered over the SE Gulf of Mexico. A high-pressure area from the
Virginia coast eastward is cooperating with the low to set up brisk
winds across the entire SE with a lot of moist air. The low in the
Gulf is almost exactly on track where the models have predicted it for
the last three days. The future track of the low will be the boss on
how much rain we get in Central Alabama. It still looks like the
southern third of the state will get the heaviest rain. The low as
predicted will move on to the Louisiana coast Saturday and tend to
lose part of its identity over the weekend.

For Central Alabama, this means a risk of occasional showers every day
even into the middle of next week. We think our better chance of
showers will be Sunday and Monday and there could also be a few
thunderstorms thrown in for good measure.

SEVERE WEATHER: We do not see much risk of severe weather at all in
Alabama with this wet weather event. In fact, most of the USA should
be fairly free of that risk for at least the next 2 days.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: I guess this is a bit of relatively good
news, but only 28 people were killed by lightning in the calendar year
2008 around the USA. That is the lowest number of fatalities since
records have been kept, however, all 28 were outdoors at the time.
Most of the lightning deaths in the USA occur in June, July and August.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 17 inches of rain at Daytona in the last 3 or 4 days
after going without a drop for the first 10 days of May. They have
received 5.29 inches in the last 24 hours and Jacksonville 6.44
inches. Panama City has only received 0.05 all month, but that is
about to change. All areas along the NW Florida coast, the Alabama
coast and Mississippi coast should get a real drenching over the
weekend. Our QPF Guidance, which means estimated rain totals, points
to 6.50 inches over the next 5 days in places like Pensacola, Mobile,
Biloxi and Laurel. Cold temperatures this morning included 18 in
Stanley, Idaho and 23 at Point Hope, Alaska. Only 1 inch of snow left
at Nome and 17 inches at Whittier. Winter is rapidly approaching in
the Southern Hemisphere. It was 37 this morning at Rio Grande,
Argentina and 66 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica with heavy blowing
snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: At some point in the wee morning hours,
the majority owner decided to get up early. She tossed her covers back
and completely covered Little Miss Molly. All I could see was the tip
of her nose. She quickly scrambled out of that and came over and
cuddled as close to me as she could get. She felt like a little
heater. I compared her to one of her little beanbags that you put in
the microwave for a few minutes to keep your feet warm. She stayed
with me about 5 minutes and then decided to explore another part of
the king size bed. Life goes on.

...Showers Return To Alabama...

MOIST AIR RETURNS: A strong easterly flow will continue across
Alabama, due to high pressure north of the state, and low pressure to
the south over the Gulf of Mexico. This will pull in moisture,
initially from the Atlantic, and will bring a mostly cloudy sky to the
state along with the chance of a few passing showers through tonight.
The rain shouldn't be especially heavy or widespread, just be aware
that you might have to dodge a few raindrops.

That same pattern will continue tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday as
moisture levels continue to slowly increase. It looks like the most
widespread rain over the weekend will come over the southern half of
the state, but a few passing showers are a good bet up this way with a
mostly cloudy sky and afternoon highs in the 77 to 80 degree range. A
few rain delays are likely at the SEC tournament going on at Regions
Park in Hoover, but the chance of a total session being washed out
looks small at this time.

We do expect the rain to become more widespread and heavier on
Memorial Day as the surface low in the Gulf moves inland; periods of
rain are likely for the first half of the week as deep tropical
moisture moves up into the state.

BEACH WEEKEND: Sunshine will be rather limited along the Gulf coast
through the weekend; only about one to two hours of sunshine each day
with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms from time to time. The
NWS in Mobile has issued a gale warning for offshore waters; winds
along the immediate coast will gust as high as 30 mph, and rough surf
and rip tides are very possible all the way from Panama City west to
Gulf Shores. Afternoon highs will be very close to 80 degrees, and the
sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 73
degrees.

STORMY FLORIDA: NWS survey crews confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched
down in Casselberry, FL during the pre-dawn hours yesterday morning,
where a tornado ripped the roofs off two homes and damaged two others.
As of last night, 14.8 inches of rain had fallen on New Smryna Beach.
Palm Coast, Longwood, Daytona Beach and Sanford also saw rain totals
in the double digits.

ON THIS DATE IN 1792: Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis was born. Coriolis was
a French engineer and mathematician who first described the Coriolis
force, an effect of motion on a rotating body, which is of paramount
importance to meteorology. The Coriolis force on Earth is one factor
that determines general wind directions and is responsible for the
rotation of hurricanes.

...Our Nice Weather Will Be Leaving...

WATCHING THE GULF OF MEXICO: We have enjoyed several days of
extremely pleasant weather if you did not mind a chill in the air when
you first got up and walked the dog. Afternoons were very comfortable
with low humidity and highs in the 70s and a nice breeze.
All of that is about to come to an end thanks to a disturbance (low-
pressure area) over the SE Gulf of Mexico. That low has been spreading
heavy amounts of rain across the Florida Peninsula. The future track
of that low will determine what kind of weather that will affect
Alabama through the weekend.

Weather models this morning are consistent with those of yesterday
bringing the low-pressure area into the heart of the Central Gulf of
Mexico by
Friday morning and slowly moving it to off the Louisiana coast by
Sunday morning. This means that most of the rain in Alabama will be
over the south part of the state and especially closer to the coast.
In fact, by late Sunday or Monday as much as 3 inches of rain could
occur in the Mobile area and 1.25 inches over much of the southern
third of the state. Not nearly that much for the greater Birmingham
area. We think our better chance of showers and a few thunderstorms
will be on Friday. There will still be some around, however, Saturday
and Sunday.
Meanwhile, high temperatures will be mostly between 75 and 80 tomorrow
through Sunday.

DROUGHTLESS IN ALABAMA: We are all extremely pleased that we are not
dealing with a major drought like we did in recent times. We must
caution, however, that the weather can change its mind in fairly short
notice. We are not trying to say that we will have another drought, we
simply do not know. We are getting into the time of year when the
weather can turn quite hot and very dry. May 1962 is a prime example.
It was 97 in Birmingham on this date that year. A major heat wave set
in during the second week of the month and lasted all month. The
temperature exceeded 90 on 24 days in a row and 15 days had highs of
95 or above topped by 99 on the 28th. A small light shower occurred on
May 1 and not a drop of additional rain for the next 28 days.

SUNSHINE SCORECARD: We have a faithful reader that likes an update on
this several times a year. The sun will rise tomorrow at 5:43 and set
at 7:45. So, we now have 255 minutes of additional daylight (4 hours
and 15 minutes) than we did in the shortest days of winter.

DOUBLE JEOPARDY: On May 22, 1933, an F4 tornado destroyed the
business district of Liberal, Kansas. It was a double hazard because the
tornado was hidden in a massive dust storm.

ROAMING: 5.87 inches of rain at Daytona in the last 24 hours, 3.90 in
Orlando and 4.28 at Sanford, Florida. Cold spots this morning: 23 at
Barter Island, Alaska and 25 at Redmond, Oregon. Only 2 inches of snow
still on the ground at Barrow and Nome, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am convinced that my Little Miss Molly
thinks I have semi-abandoned her. I have been so busy the last two
weeks with weather and non-weather stuff that I have had very little
time for her. Even when someone else starts out the door to take her
for a walk, she pulls on the leash to try to get me to do that.
However, every time I go from my weather office to the kitchen to get
a cup of coffee (very often) I look for her curled up in the living
area, turn her over on her back and give her a nice belly rub. She
really gives me a thankful look. Life goes on.

...Moist Air Returns Late Tomorrow...

ANOTHER MAGNIFICENT MAY DAY: A dry airmass continues to cover Alabama
this morning, meaning we will enjoy another sunny day with low
humidity levels and comfortable temperatures. Most communities will
rise into the upper 70s this afternoon. You will probably notice a
brisk easterly breeze developing thanks to low pressure in the eastern
Gulf of Mexico, and that feature holds the key to the Memorial Day
weekend forecast for our state.

We will bring in a chance of showers late tomorrow and tomorrow night,
with showers possible on Friday as well as moisture moves into the
state from the east and south, around the top of the low in the Gulf.
For now, the rain on Friday doesn't look especially heavy, and we are
talking passing showers instead of a large rain mass.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: No doubt we will have a few showers around here
Saturday and Sunday, but it looks more and more like the most
widespread rain will be down over the southern half of the state as
the Gulf system remains well offshore. Afternoon highs should be in
the low 80s over the weekend with a few passing showers both days.
Rain could become more widespread on Monday as the low moves northward
toward the coast.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly cloudy and windy conditions are likely along the
coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores over the holiday weekend,
and there will be periods of rain and a few thunderstorms. Some rough
surf and rip tide conditions are very possible as well due to the
surface low in the Gulf. Afternoon highs will be close to 80, and the
sea water temperature last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 72
degrees (F).
We note it usually takes 80 degree (F) water for significant
development of tropical storms and hurricanes. Hurricane season begins
on June 1.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: Tornado at Williamsburg, Kansas caused 71-mile
path of destruction through southern suburbs of Kansas City. There was
near total devastation through the suburbs of Ruskin Heights and
Hickman Mills. 44 killed and 531 injured. A 5000-pound gasoline tank
was reportedly transported 1.5 miles and dropped into a lake. It was
Kansas City's worst weather disaster of record.

...Looking Southward...

GULF OF MEXICO HOLDS THE KEY: Forever and forever, the Gulf of Mexico
has been a major player in Alabama climate and weather. For sure it
has more influence on our weather than any body of water in the entire
world. So, it is not surprising that we give our old friend, The Gulf,
a lot of respect and attention.

Our weather all the way through the weekend will depend on
developments in the Gulf. Here is the situation. Already a low-
pressure system was over South Florida and the Keys. By tomorrow
morning, it will be over the SE Gulf and moving generally westward.
Thursday will find that low directly in the center of the Gulf and by
Saturday it may approach the Mississippi/Louisiana coast. Not to be
overlooked is an upper-low that will move from the SE Gulf of Mexico
tomorrow and move generally NW and pretty much become difficult to
identify by Friday.

So, what does all of this jumbo-mumbo mean? I try not to get deep into
discussions like this, because most people want to know yes or no on
rain and what the temperature will be. We look for our current
excellent weather to continue through Wednesday. If your plain old
everyday weather had categories like tornadoes and hurricanes, this
would easily be a 5. The humidity will still be low tomorrow with lots
of sunshine. A few showers may show up later Thursday. It appears our
better chance of showers and thunderstorms will be on Friday. We now
believe that Saturday will not have as many, because of the low
passing off to the SW.

TOP OF THE LINE WEATHER TODAY: I was out driving around NE Jefferson
County this morning and even distant ridges were sharp and clear.
There was virtually no haze. Just the right amount of wind and low
humidity and the temperatures were perfect. Again today I placed a
long list of
low temperatures on the BLOG and again here is a small sample:

38 Broomtown
39 Millport, Russellville Airport
40 Muscadine, Scrougeout, Hamilton
41 Cottondale, Russell Cave National Monument
43 Cullman, Pinson, Argo
45 Holly Pond, Jasper, Sylacauga, Wadley
48 Anniston, Albertville, Cordova, Guntersville
49 Birmingham

THERE IS NO DROUGHT IN HOLLY POND: The ABC 33/40 Skywatcher reports
13.07 inches of rain so far in the month of May. If it were to keep
that up, they would have a year supply in only two months. Of course,
that will not happen, but a big percentage of Alabama is in good shape
with rain amounts.

AROUND GOOD OLD NORTH AMERICA: 5.87 inches of rain in the last 24
hours at Daytona. A blistering 118 for a high in Death Valley
yesterday. Cold spots this morning included 22 at Saranac Lake, New
York and 27 at Eagle, Alaska. Whittier still has 21 inches of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is enjoying a very
quiet and peaceful day. Only her two owners are here. Last night she
almost never got to sleep because of too much in-house noise. Last
night I ate supper in my comfortable chair. Little Miss Molly begged
and begged, hopped up in my lap and had her nose only 3 inches from my
mouth. She was giving me that pitiful look and I had to turn my head.
She has also learned to smack her lips when I am eating. I could not
slip her any food, because the majority owner had me under
surveillance. Little Miss Molly sure did look puzzled, but life goes
on even with a disappointed little puppy.

...Watching the Gulf of Mexico...

ANOTHER DRY DAY: A refreshing, continental airmass continues to cover
Alabama this morning; we will begin the day with temperatures well
down in the 40s, very close to record levels for May 19 (Birmingham's
record low this morning is 43 degrees set in 1976). We are forecasting
a sunny day with a high in the mid 70s, around 7 degrees below average
values for mid-May. Humidity levels will remain low, making for a very
comfortable day. Tomorrow will be dry as well with a high around 80
degrees as a warming trend continues. A few scattered clouds could
show up tomorrow afternoon, but the low level air will remain very dry.

TO THE SOUTH: We will be watching developments in the Gulf of Mexico
as the week rolls along. A part of the upper trough that has been over
the eastern third of the nation will split off and become cut-off
around the Florida peninsula, and a surface low will be reflected
under this feature, somewhere over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This is
some chance that this low could acquire tropical characteristics, and
the National Hurricane Center might send a Hurricane Hunter aircraft
into the region today to investigate. While the hurricane season
doesn't begin until June 1, the sea water temperatures in the Gulf are
relatively warm, and pre-season development is certainly not out of
the question. If something does become organized in the eastern Gulf
later in the week, most likely it won't be a true tropical system, but
more of a hybrid, with the main threat being heavy rain. Initially,
the heaviest rain will fall over the Florida peninsula, but the wet
weather will spread northwest, and here in Alabama we will forecast
periods of rain and a few thunderstorms Friday through Sunday. Bottom
line is that it looks like we will be dealing with another wet weekend.

AT THE BEACH: The first big holiday weekend of the summer is ahead,
and our system in the eastern Gulf will certainly be a big player for
the Central Gulf Coast. Showers and storms are likely Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday for the area from Panama City to Gulf Shores,
with potential for heavy rain at times. In addition, gusty winds and
dangerous rip tides are likely due to the pressure gradient setting up
along the coast. Afternoon highs along the immediate coast will be
close to 80 degrees, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab last night was 75 degrees (F).

MAY CHILL: The coldest spot in Alabama yesterday morning was the small
community of Grantley, in Cleburne County, with a low of 35 degrees.
Birmingham's official low was 45.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Devastating flooding at Hot Springs, AR results
from over 13 inches of rain in just nine hours. Serious flooding
occurred downtown along Central Avenue. Water was released from Lake
Hamilton and raced downstream to Remmel Dam. Many houses and cabins,
which had been swept away by the floodwaters, were swept over the dam!

...A Near Record Chill...

A NICE BREAK FROM WET WEATHER: What a change in our weather! After
all of the weekend showers and storms, a cool front was able to push
all the way through the state and this afternoon that front had pushed
to near Orlando. All of Alabama did not clear right away. There were
still some clouds over the extreme SE this afternoon.

However, for about ¾ of the state, it has been a sparkling clear day
with low humidity, a nice breeze and what seems like visibility of 100
miles.
That 100 miles is an exaggeration of course, but you could see for
many, many miles.

For much of North and Central Alabama, low temperatures were close to
a record for May 18. The record low for Birmingham was 44 in 1973 and
our low this morning was 45. We have posted a long list of morning
lows on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but here is a small representative
sampling:

37 near Hytop in Jackson County (coldest reported)
40 Cullman
41 Hamilton and Meridianville
42 Scrougout, Ft. Payne
45 Livingston, Decatur, Birmingham
46 Centreville, Helena
48 Marion
50 Clanton

It will be nearly that cool again tonight, but starting tomorrow a
warm up. Mostly of the clear weather is expected at least through
Wednesday. A few showers may show up Thursday and a slightly better
chance on Friday. It is not sealed in stone yet, but a low-pressure
area may visit the North Gulf of Mexico by this weekend increasing
rain amounts.

ELSEWHERE: Atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park
there was a hard freeze overnight with a low of 21. The coldest in the
lower 48 was 18 at Spincich Lake, Michigan. I believe Sunday afternoon
brought the hottest temperature so far this year in the California
Desert with a blistering 116 in Death Valley. The coldest in Alaska
today was 15 at Barter Island. The snow is really melting away at
Whittier, Alaska. They now have only 25 inches on the ground. When we
first started this little daily check just for fun, they had 106 inches.

SPOTLIGHTING: CLINES CORNERS Where in the world is Clines Corners, you
ask. You may even want to know where in the universe is Clines
Corners. It so happens to be a very important location, although not
very big. It is sort of an oasis in Eastern New Mexico where I-40
crosses US-285. For years there has been a huge truck stop there with
a restaurant, showers and a gift shop. I have passed there several
time, but one of my most memorable weather encounters was there. In
the spring of 1955, a friend and I were en route to Rogers Pass,
Montana—the coldest spot in the nation. We were travelling north from
Roswell toward Santa Fe and got caught in a vicious dust and
sandstorm. I thought all of the paint would come off of my new car.
Visibility was so low I could not see the hood ornament. Clines
Corners is subject to a lot of wind, dust storms and prone to hail
storms.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little friend, Miss Molly, got to see
her first love (Dino) the young little Yorkie several times over the
weekend and you could just see the happiness in her face. It is the
highlight of her day to get into a rambunctious play session with that
little guy. I have never seen two little dogs so fond of each other.
Life goes on and when Little Molly is happy, I am happy.

Step outside and take a deep breath. You might only get one more
morning like this until next September or October. And that will be
tomorrow. After today and tomorrow, temperatures and dewpoints in the
40s will probably not be seen here in Central Alabama again for the
next four months. We will be longingly wishing for days like this when
we get to the dog days of summer.
A BEAUTIFUL START TO THE WEEK: On the weather maps this morning, we
find sprawling high pressure centered over Ohio and Indiana. This high
ridges all the way back into north Texas. Clockwise winds rotating out
from this big anticyclone will be out of the northeast over Central
Alabama today. You will notice them, averaging 10-18 mph. Despite
nearly full sun, temperatures today will struggle to make it very far
into the 70s. In fact, some spots may not get out the 60s today. When
combined with the low humidity and brisk winds, it will feel quite
chilly. Tonight will be another refreshing night, with lows again in
the 40s in most spots.

PERFECT WEATHER WATCH: Tuesday promises to be a very beautiful day
again across the area. Tomorrow may be even better than today, with
lighter winds and a little warmer temperatures. Look for highs in the
upper 70s with continued low humidity and lots of sunshine. Tuesday's
weather may be about as ideal as you will see in Central Alabama, so
we will go ahead and post a perfect weather warning for the area.

INTERESTING FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK: There is a table top
exercise about a hurricane hitting the state of Alabama at the State
Emergency Operations Center this Wednesday. It could be very apropos,
as we could be watching some sort of tropical development in the Gulf
by then. Indeed, the forecast for the rest of the week is quite murky
because of this potential development. The numerical weather
prediction models have been fairly consistent in showing the
development of a low pressure system in the vicinity of Cuba or the
Florida Keys early in the week. There have been difference in the
eventually track of the low. Some carry it directly in to the Gulf.
Other solutions have carried it into the Atlantic, only to bring it
back across Florida and into the Gulf. But nearly every solution means
heavy rains for the Florida Peninsula and generally all of them bring
the system eventually to the northern Gulf states, accompanied by
widespread precipitation.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: A large outbreak of severe weather across the
Ohio, Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys produced eighty six tornadoes.
Six people died and sixty five were injured. Three people died around
Ethridge, TN as an F4 tornado carved a twenty nine mile path. This
tornado destroyed six high tension electric transmission towers that
belonged to the TVA. The towers were never found. The other F4 tornado
of the day touched down northwest of Athens, AL shortly after 4:30
p.m. It crossed I-65 and traversed all of Madison County before moving
into Jackson County. The tornado finally lifted near Hytop after
cutting a thirty nine mile damage path. Only one person died in this
tornado.

...Refreshingly Cool Tonight...

A gentle rain fell across much of North Central Alabama this morning
as southwesterly winds ahead of an approaching upper trough pushed
moisture up and over a cold front that moved into South Central
Alabama overnight. The rain was ending from the northwest and that
trend will continue through the afternoon hours.

CLEARING AND COOL TONIGHT: Clouds will begin to break up from the
northwest this afternoon, with clearing occurring in most areas of
Central Alabama overnight. Cooler and drier air was already flowing
into the state and this will allow temperatures to fall into the 40s
in most spots by morning. That will feel quite refreshing in the wake
of the warm and humid conditions we have been experiencing. There
could be a
little patchy fog in spots, so be alert to that.

NICE WEATHER AHEAD: Sunshine will be the rule on Monday and Tuesday
as high pressure will be in control of Alabama's weather. It will be
on the coolish side for mid-spring on Monday, with highs struggling to
make it very far into the 70s. We will call for an average high
around 72 tomorrow. Look for another night of lows in the 40s on
Monday night before moisture levels and temperatures start to warm
again. Tuesday looks to be a nearly perfect day across Central
Alabama with lots of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. The
forecast for Wednesday and beyond will depend heavily on developments
in the Gulf of Mexico.

TROPICAL TROUBLE: Nearly all of the numerical weather prediction
models that we use regularly have been consistent in their depiction
of a tropical or subtropical system in the Gulf of Mexico this week.
Low pressure is expected to develop in the next couple of days near
western Cuba. Wind shear is expected to lessen making for more
favorable environmental conditions as we head through the week. The
low is expected to become better organized as it moves northwestward
across the Gulf. The system has a decent chance to develop tropical
or subtropical characteristics. The morning run of the GFS model
carries the system northeastward over South Florida before deflecting
in back westward into the Gulf later in the week. There is not much
confidence in this forecast, but it does appear that South Florida
will receive beneficial rains. If the system moves toward the
northern Gulf Coast, the Deep South could see some healthy rains also.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Allied Supreme Commander Eisenhower made the
decision on the date to launch the Allied Invasion of France. He
chose June 5, 1944. The most important factor related to favorable
tides and moonlight conditions. But almost as important were the
weather conditions. In April and May, weather conditions over the
English Channel were unusually fine. Climatologically, conditions in
June were expected to be the best, but June 1944 would see storms of
unusual severity across the invasion area. The weather forecast that
led to postponing the actual invasion date until June 6th would prove
to be a masterpiece. A brief lull in the stormy weather allowed the
invasion to commence, much to the surprise of the Germans, who thought
the weather too inclement.
