The Stokin' the Fire BBQ Festival is at Sloss Furnaces today. The
Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event runs until 11 p.m.
tonight. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 5-12 and free for
children under 5. There will be music on the Hog Wild stage and kids
activities. Of course, there is the 'cue. You can buy plenty of it,
and watch as teams compete for $20,000 in prizes. Proceeds benefit
the Sloss Furnaces Foundation, dedicated to preserving the treasure
that is Sloss Furnaces.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Numerous mescoscale boundaries leftover from
yesterday's storms, plenty of moisture and a weakening upper level
ridge is a recipe for something we have grown to appreciate as much
as barbecue here in Birmingham: rainfall. Scattered storms will
develop this afternoon as a good bit of sunshine warms the atmosphere
over eastern sections. Early clouds over western sections may set up
a differential heating situation just west of I-65. Storms that do
form will produce torrential rains, deadly lightning. Damaging winds
look less likely today, but could return tomorrow. Highs will top
out generally in the lower 90s, cooler in locations with early
storms, hotter in places that are untouched by nearby activity.
Expect a carbon copy for tomorrow. Again, highs will be dependent
upon when storms begin in your area.

NEXT WEEK: A weaker version of our high will hold through midweek,
with plenty of moisture to create daily doses of scattered afternoon
and evening storms. Highs will be in the 90s. By Thursday, a
developing low pressure trough over the east will send a cold front
drifting our way and enhancing our shower and storm chances by
Thursday and Friday.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Hurricane Dean entered the Category Five Hall
of Dame earlier this week before it moved across the Yucatan and into
Mexico. The remnant moisture has worked its way into southern
Arizona and New Mexico, shunted northward by the ridge of high
pressure to the east. Some impressive rainfall overnight, especially
north of Tucson, eastward over to near Lordsburg, New Mexico. The
high today in Phoenix is expected to be only in the upper 90s.
Severe weather is possible today from the Ohio Valley into New
England ahead of a wavy cold front. A small area of severe weather
is possible over the Oklahoma Panhandle, SW Kansas and SE Colorado
today also. Severe flooding still continues on rivers in the Midwest.

THE GREAT MOBILE HURRICANE: Early on the morning of Wednesday,
August 25, 1852, the wind at Mobile began blowing strongly from the
northeast and a steady rain began to fall. It was the first sign
that there was a serious hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, southeast
of the city. As the Great Mobile Hurricane of 1852 came ashore near
Pascagoula MS, the wind continued to blow, shifting around to the
southeast as the hurricane passed to the southwest. The southeast
wind pushed waters up into Mobile Bay, causing the worst flooding the
port city had ever seen.

...Times are Changin'...

It was a welcome site when I saw cumulus cloud towers beginning to
develop by 10:30 Friday morning. I noted the temperature at the
time, which was in the lower 90s. The times they were a-changin'.
The times that were changing were the temperatures aloft. The ridge
was breaking down. Sure enough, a couple of fledgling thunderstorms
developed. The first was in the Clay area. I just had to get in the
car and drive toward the storm, lured by the prospect of seeing
rain. The storm dissipated about as quickly as it formed. Soon
though, as temperatures rose even further, more storms popped up. A
powerful storm developed near the I-459/59 interchange. As it became
severe, I again had to just hop in the car and drive to the extremely
heavy rain. People were actually pulling under overpasses on Highway
11, like they were amazed by the rain. To the north, I saw a
mountain of a storm. It turns out that it was over Blount County,
where is produced a large downburst event with intense winds. During
the evening, a complex of thunderstorms entered eastern sections,,
but it weakened as is moved southwestward.

THIS WEEKEND: Scattered thunderstorms will develop again today
as temperatures warm into the 90s again. Once again, they will pack
quite a wallop with torrential rains, potentially deadly lightning
and the possibility of damaging downburst winds. Look for more of
the same again on Sunday as a shortwave trough passes by to our
north, enhancing our rain chances slightly.

HEADING INTO A NEW WORK WEEK: The ridge will still be over the
southern states through midweek, but it will barely be a shadow of
its former self. We will still see temperatures in the 90s, but that
is welcome compared to the intense heat we have been experiencing.
Scattered storms will be the norm, mainly during the afternoon and
evening hours each day. By Thursday, a large trough of low pressure
will begin develop over the eastern states. This will push a front
southward towards Alabama, leading to more widespread showers and
storms by late in the week. Highs will settle back toward what is
normal for this time of year, with highs in the upper 80s. It looks
like the front will stall across the state and give us wetter than
normal conditions into the week of Labor Day.

ON THIS DATE IN 1814: The War of 1812 is the only time that foreign
troops have ever occupied our Nation's capital. As British troops
burned the city of Washington, including the Capitol, White House and
Pennsylvania Avenue, the skies began to darken. As a huge
thunderstorm pounded the city, a tornado ripped through residential
sections of Washington. Several British soldiers were killed by the
storm. Their ranks shattered, the event was followed by a retreat by
the Redcoats. /

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: According to the Royal Meteorological Society
Journal Weather: Hailstones the size of gobstoppers were reported at
the Cape Cornwell Golf Club, in Cornwall England during a severe
hailstorm. How big is a gobstopper? About 20 mm across.

======================================================

TEMPERATURES BECOMING A LITTLE MORE FRIENDLY: A nice array of
thunderstorms developed across Alabama this afternoon. In fact, some
of them started forming well before noon. In the heat of the
afternoon, some of those thunderstorms became severe. There were a
number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued within a 50-mile radius
of Birmingham. There were several damage reports in Cullman and
Talladega Counties. Trees were down at Fowler Springs on the south
side of Blountsville and there was wind damage to the roof at
Cleveland Elementary School in Cleveland, which is also in Blount
County. The Blount County EMA Office reported minor wind damage to
one of the Cleveland Fire Department's bay doors. The Fire Department
also reported rotation in the clouds. Trees and power lines were down
on a school bus at the Cleveland bus shop. It was probably not
occupied. Kids were also being held in the hall at the school.

Moisture has increased nicely across Alabama today and the atmosphere
has become more unstable. That is the reason for the increase in the
number of showers and thunderstorms. There were a number of
thunderstorms within a 50-mile radius of Birmingham mid-afternoon.
Down south, the thunderstorms were even more numerous over the
southern third of the state and those were working their way toward
the NW.

NOT AS HOT FOR THE NEAR FUTURE: Most of the 100-degree heat is out
of here for the time being. We are calling for high temperatures all
the way through the middle of next week to be in the mid 90s. In
fact, some of the model guidance suggests high temperatures by the
end of next week to be in the upper 80s or lower 90s.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures close to 90 through the early part
of next week with scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. In
fact, there is a good chance of thunderstorms Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Unbelievable problems in Chicago. Reports of
over 3,000 trees uprooted or partially uprooted across the city and
224 traffic lights knocked out. There was widespread flooding. A nice
cool 49 this morning at Layton, Utah and the mountains around
Breckinridge, Colorado were whitened with snow. Coldest in the USA
this morning was 29 at West Yellowstone, Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Hope you had a chance to read my
extended salute about Little Miss Molly on the 33/40 Weather Blog
earlier today. Her fifth birthday is tomorrow and she has been with
us almost that long and has been a pure delight. I conservatively
estimate that she and I have walked 1,700 miles since we have had
her. If she had not let me turn around, we would have been all the
way to Los Angeles or up into SW Canada by now. I cannot tell she has
slowed down a bit since we have had her. Her ballgames have become
more frequent and more persistent. Our two grandkids, Alex and Mandy
Broome, have been excellent to keep Molly busy and to help me with
the walks. Life goes on.....

...Heat Levels Will Slowly Back off...
UNDER 100 TODAY? We are going to forecast a high of 98 degrees today,
which is seven degrees "cooler" than yesterday's high of 105 in
Birmingham. While a few spots might touch 100 degrees, we believe
that most communities will remain under 100 for a change thanks to a
weakening upper air high overhead, and an influx of moisture from the
east. The heat will continue to slow back down over the weekend, with
highs in the mid 90s tomorrow and Sunday.

With the increase in moisture will come an increase in the chance of
showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours
during the next few days. But, the storms will remain scattered, so
rain distribution will be very uneven. If you are lucky enough to get
under a heavy downpour, you might see one-half to one inch of rain.
Any storm that forms this afternoon will also have the potential for
wet microbursts, local areas of strong winds that can cause some
damage. And, the lighting will be vivid, frequent, and dangerous.

NEXT WEEK: At this point we are expecting highs to be in the 90 to 95
degree range for the first half of next week, with the daily chance
of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. An
approaching cold front should bring an increase in the number and
coverage of showers and storms toward the end of the week on Thursday
and Friday.

LONG RANGE: A transition to a more autumn-like weather pattern is
expected in the September 5-12 time frame as an upper air trough
forms over the eastern third of North America. This pattern would
favor our first decent frontal passage in quite some time, followed
by cooler and drier Canadian air. Many Alabamians have been waiting
for this through the long, hot summer of 2007.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A code orange air quality alert remains in effect
for the Birmingham metro area (Jefferson and Shelby Counties) today,
meaning air quality is expected to be unhealthful for sensitive
groups, like people with asthma.

HOTTEST/DRIEST MONTH ON RECORD? This could turn out to be the hottest
month on record for Birmingham, and many other cities in Alabama. Of
course, we won't have the final statistics for seven more days, but
as of today the average high this month is 99.95 degrees, and the
average low 75.43. We have dealt with temperatures of 100 degrees or
higher on 14 days; that beats the old record of 12 100 degree days
set in September 1925. The rain total all month in Birmingham is only
0.25"; currently the driest August on record was in 1989 when the
total was only 0.38". Hopefully the expected showers and storms in
coming days will keep this from being our driest August on record. We
should note that during the entire month of October in 1924 there was
no measurable rain in Birmingham; that is a record that will never be
broken (but it can be tied)!.

======================================================

MAY BE OUR LAST 100-DEGREE HEAT FOR A WHILE: Not absolutely certain
about tomorrow. The temperature may fool us and hit 100 again, but we
are sticking to our forecast high of 98.

Some subtle changes in the weather have started today, mostly from
the east and SE. Moisture has been circulating inland from the
Atlantic. By this afternoon, several showers had formed over NE
Alabama. Visible satellite showed some an increase in clouds from the
SE. However, the old thermometer had already exceeded 100 over a good
part of North and West Alabama.
How about Dothan? That SE Alabama city benefited from some showers
that moved into the area from SW Georgia and North Florida. The city
was drenched with 2.66 inches of rain this morning, including over 2
inches between 7 and 8 a.m. Even at midday, temperatures were only in
the 70s at Dothan, while much of the rest of the state was sweltering.

For the rest of the week and into early next week, we think we might
escape any more 100-degree heat. Our persistent heat ridge is giving
way, at least temporarily. We are projecting highs in the mid 90s
from Saturday through at least the middle of next week. In fact, on
some days especially toward midweek, the high may barely get above
90. That will feel almost like autumn. There will also be a chance of
a shower or thunderstorm on those days.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: High temperatures will be around 88 along the
immediate beach area and low 90s inland. There will be scattered
showers and thunderstorms each day, including a good chance late in
the weekend and through early next week.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A real tragedy in the Midwest. Extensive major
flooding in at least 5 or 6 states, with a number of fatalities from
the flooding. Several people have also been killed by lightning. A
typical rain amount in the last 24 hours was 3.67 inches at Sioux
City, Iowa. Coldest temperature this morning was 32 in Stanley, Idaho
and West Yellowstone, Montana.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Dean died a pauper's death in the
mountains of Central Mexico. The once powerful Category 5 pretty much
dissipated late last night over the higher mountains in Central
Mexico. There are several tropical waves out in the great big
Atlantic today, but none of them seriously threaten to become a
storm. One in the Bahamas, did have a small hint of circulation.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I plan to post a special tribute to
Little Miss Molly on the 33/40 blog tomorrow morning, since it is
time for her birthday celebration. I am going to even post one of my
favorite pictures of her. I still have not changed over to digital
photography, so my last good pictures of Molly were taken by Chuck
Biddinger. However, yesterday, one of my grandkids got a good shot of
her with their cell phone camera. I am even going to make that my
computer wallpaper. So, I will sit here at my desk concerned about
the weather while looking at Little Miss Molly. I will even talk to
the picture. With the extra people in our home, she has come in my
office more often wanting to get up on my desk and just talk to me.
We have great conversations, I am just glad you cannot hear them.
Life goes on—busier than ever.....

...One More Blistering Day...

FINAL TRIPLE DIGIT DAY? There is a chance that today will be the last
day of widespread 100 degree heat across Alabama in 2007. And, most
folks will probably say "good riddance". We expect afternoon
temperatures to rise into the 100 to 106 degree range today, in
record territory and over ten degrees above normal for August 23. The
good news is that, like yesterday, dewpoints are expected to be
rather low during the peak of the heat, with humidity values only in
the 20 percent range during the afternoon hours. That will make the
extreme heat a little more tolerable. Today will be the 14th day this
summer with a high of 100 degrees or hotter in Birmingham (all of
those days have come during the month of August).

ONLY A SLOW COOL DOWN: We need to stress that the weather will remain
very hot tomorrow, but with the upper air ridge breaking down a bit,
and moisture levels increasing, we figure the high tomorrow will be
in the 96 to 99 degree range for most spots. And, we will introduce
the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and
evening hours.

OUR WEEKEND: As the moisture levels continue to increase, partly due
to a tropical wave moving through, we expect an associated increase
in the number of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday.
Rainfall distribution won't be very even due to the scattered nature
of the showers and storms, but some spots could pick over one half
inch of rain this weekend. And, afternoon highs should drop back into
the 92 to 96 degree range.

LONG RANGE: The GFS (the primary American global computer model)
totally breaks down the heat ridge at the end of next week, replacing
it with a long wave upper air trough over the eastern U.S., which
will bring a cold front down this way and enhance the coverage of
showers and storms in about 7 to 8 days from now. An even stronger
front shows up in the September 5-7 time frame, which has the
potential to bring our first taste of Canadian air, and a preview of
fall. But, as I like to say, this is voodoo country because it is
more than seven days in advance. There is very little skill in a
specific forecast beyond seven days, but the model might be on to
something this time.

TROPICS: Dean will dissipate today over the mountains of Central
Mexico. Some moisture from Dean will move up into the Southwest U.S.
over the weekend, enhancing the monsoon moisture flow across Arizona
and New Mexico. And, the tropical wave moving into the Florida
peninsula this morning shows no sign of organization.

TOO HOT: Interesting to note that Birmingham, with our high of 104
yesterday, was hotter than: Dallas (their high was 96), Tucson,
Arizona (the high there was 102), and Miami (where the high was 91).
Atlanta's high of 104 was an all-time high for the month of August,
and within one degree of the all time high of 105 set two times
during the heat wave of 1980.

SLIGHTLY FRIENDLIER TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND: Not only that, but it
looks like we will get an influx of moisture that could give us a
slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm by Saturday and an even
better chance on Sunday. Do not get too optimistic. Even on Sunday,
most communities will stay dry. That chance of showers and
thunderstorms each day may extend several days into next week. We
believe that high temperatures will back off to the mid 90s over the
weekend. We could even see some highs next week in the lower 90s. We
do not know if this is a permanent end to our summer to remember, but
it could be.

Meanwhile, we must suffer through very hot weather again Thursday and
Friday. We are calling for a high of 102 tomorrow and just under 100
on Friday. If the forecast is correct, tomorrow will be our 14th day
this month with temperatures 100 or hotter. By early this afternoon,
the temperature had crossed the 100-degree mark in a number of
locations in North and Central Alabama. The air is very dry aloft and
during the day some of that drier air mixes down to where we humans
call home. The dew point in Muscle Shoals was as low as 59 and the
relative humidity only 25%. Translation: makes the heat a little more
bearable.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Dean moved ashore into mainland Mexico
at midday as a Category 2. He began to weaken quickly and sustained
winds were down to 85 mph. He will continue moving west becoming a
tropical storm and then a tropical depression. The NHC thinks he will
dissipate in the mountains of Central Mexico. But even while dying,
he could still dump very heavy rain. Meanwhile, the area of clouds
and thunderstorms with a tropical wave from Western Cuba across the
NW Bahamas and into the Atlantic was moving west at 15 to 20. Upper
level winds are unfriendly for any tropical cyclone development.
However, this feature could bring showers and thunderstorms to the
Florida Peninsula during the next couple of days.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Dean is overshadowing almost everything, but
enormous flash flooding continues in the Midwest. Some of the most
widespread I can remember in a long time across several states. Some
whole towns were almost under water. Places like Findlay, Ohio and
several towns in Iowa and South Dakota. 4.62 inches of rain at
Humboldt, Iowa. Press reports say about 22 people have died in the
flash flooding.

GREAT BIG HUMONGOUS HAIL: In the small town of Dante, South Dakota
around 6 o'clock last evening, storm spotters reported hailstones 6-8
inches in diameter. Mind you, that is over ½ foot in diameter.
Unbelievable!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another little doggie celebrated its
13th birthday. Her name was Maggie, a miniature fox terrier belonging
to Bridget Tytler. What was unusual, the family celebrated by feeding
her a nice warm bowl of grits. Apparently, the breeder that owned her
fed grits to the puppies. Even today, Maggie loves them. The majority
owner of Little Miss Molly nixes all human food, so she will not get
any extra treats to eat. I may buy her an oversize ball to add to her
collection. Her greatest joy in life is chasing them all over the
place. Life goes on......

...Still Hot; Still Dry...

BACK TO THE TRIPLE DIGITS: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham
was 100 degrees… the 12th day this summer with 100 or hotter. It was
also the 27th day in a row with hotter than normal afternoon
temperatures. Other highs around Alabama yesterday included 102 at
Pinson (a record high for the date at that site; the old record was
101 in 1983), 101 at Montgomery and Meadowbrook, and 100 at Muscle
Shoals, Anniston, and Evergreen. Tuscaloosa's high was a "cool" 99.

There is no reason to think the weather will be any cooler today. In
fact, the upper air ridge will be a little stronger, so if anything
afternoon readings might even be a degree or two hotter. And, along
with the heat, the drought conditions will continue to worsen.
Birmingham's rain deficit is up to 20.91". The deficiency at
Tuscaloosa is 24.80", while Anniston is down 24.01" for the year.
Shrubs and trees remain in a high state of distress, and many water
supplies are running very low across the state.

LOOKING AHEAD: Same story tomorrow; very hot and dry with a high near
100 degrees and ample sunshine. The upper air ridge will begin to
weaken slightly on Friday, and we will bring in the chance of
isolated afternoon showers or storms. Then, by the weekend, we expect
highs to drop into the mid to upper 90s with at least some risk of a
cooling thunderstorm in scattered spots during the afternoon
and evening hours.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: Dean will make his final landfall today
along the central Mexican coast well south of Brownsville, Texas. The
primary problem for Mexico this time will be the rain, and not the
wind. Serious flooding and mudslides are possible along the track of
Dean as it moves into the mountainous terrain of Mexico.
We continue to watch the disturbed weather east of the Bahamas; there
is still no sign of organization as it moves to the west, in the
general direction of Florida. At this point it looks like there is an
unfavorable upper air wind pattern for immediate development, but
even as an open tropical wave this should enhance the coverage of
rain and storms over Florida by Friday, and there is even some chance
it might bring an increased number of showers and storms to parts of
Alabama and Georgia over the weekend. That would be lovely.

COLDEST SUMMER DAY ON RECORD: The high yesterday afternoon in Central
Park in New York City was a chilly 59 degrees; that ties the record
for the coolest August maximum on record, last set in 1911. In
addition to being cool, the weather in the Big Apple was also wet;
the rain total at Central Park was 1.33".

TOO MUCH RAIN: Serious flooding across the U.S. Midwest has resulted
in at last 22 deaths during the last few days. Many rivers are still
in flood across parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

OVERACTIVE THERMOMETER: We just cannot seem to get the old backyard
thermometer to stop being unfriendly. You have probably heard so many
hot weather facts that you do not want any more, but just in case,
today was the 27th day in a row with high temperatures above normal
and also the 27th day in a row in the 90s. The last time our
temperature was just a degree or so below normal was on July 25 when
we had 89. We have had 11 days this summer with temperatures 100 or
hotter. All of those were in August.

Problem is, we may rack up a couple more 100-degree temperatures
Wednesday and Thursday. We think the high temperature may back off a
bit over the weekend. We will also introduce a few afternoon
thunderstorms Friday, Saturday and Sunday. By that time the heat
ridge parked over us should break down somewhat. Actually, there is
some indication that a front could push into North Alabama early next
week. Even if it does, it will be hardly noticeable, but it could
enhance slightly the chance of a shower or thunderstorm.

A SUMMER TO REMEMBER: A big percentage of Alabama continues under the
Exceptional drought designation. That is the highest rated drought in
use. Just one example of how serious the situation is, 69% of the
state has very short topsoil moisture and an additional 29% is short.
Only 2% of the whole State of Alabama has adequate topsoil moisture.
77% of the pasture and rangeland is in poor to very poor condition.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Powerful Hurricane Dean went ashore as scheduled
on the Yucatan Peninsula and was moving off into the extreme SW
corner of the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. He will go ashore for
the second time tomorrow on the Mexican Gulf Coast and eventually
dissipate in the mountains well inland. Meanwhile, what we thought
could possibly be Felix was pretty much fizzled north of Puerto Rico.
Upper-level winds are unfavorable for tropical development at this time.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 114 in Death Valley was the hottest Monday.
The USA low this morning was 31 at Saranac Lake, New York. That
community has been the cool spot an unusually number of times this
summer. Major flood problems in parts of the Midwest. Ft. Wayne had
4.47 inches of rain since yesterday with well over 2 inches in places
like Cleveland, Erie, Indianapolis, Dayton and Akron.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Happy Birthday to a very cute little
doggie named Daisy. She is 6 years old and belongs to Kay Mundy, one
of our long-term daily readers in Anniston. Kay sent a photograph and
the little angel is just as cute as can be. I am looking forward to
celebrating Little Miss Molly's birthday later. Still do not know
what I am going to give the little girl. I do know that she has made
my life extremely pleasant in the years that we have had her. In her
early years, she would have been overjoyed to get a roll of toilet
paper to destroy and distribute all over the house. You have seen
kids roll a lawn with toilet paper. Molly once rolled our master
bedroom and it looked like a fresh snowfall. She outgrew that little
pesky habit after we started storing the paper out of reach. Life
goes on.....
