...Ridin' the Rails...

Greetings from Train Number 20, the AMTRAK Crescent, heading home to
Birmingham from New Orleans. Nothing could be finer that to enjoy
scrambled eggs in the diner while rolling along the trestles over Lake
Ponchartrain heading out of the Big Easy. Seven hours later, I will
be in the Magic City. Many thanks to J.B. Elliott for handling my
forecasting duties last night.

RETURN TO MILDER: It's hard to believe that we are less than two
weeks from Christmas. The holiday period is starting to come into
view of the voodooland crystal ball, and we will start to be able to
get some idea what our holiday weather conditions will be. For now,
the headline is a change to milder. Our temperatures will be heading
above normal in the coming week.

WEEKEND WEATHER: High clouds have been steadily streaming in from the
southwest all day, and skies will become mostly cloudy by morning.
Moisture levels are on the rise as southeasterly winds increase.
Sunday looks to be a mild, but cloudy day, with highs around 60
degrees. You will notice a breezy southeast wind, averaging 7-15 mph.
Dew points will be on the rise through the day on Sunday and we could
see a shower by afternoon. Sunday's weather will be a harbinger of
things to come in the week ahead as we get into a mild and moist
southwesterly flow for the next several days.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We have nearly filled our yearly quota for rainfall,
at least in Birmingham. It appears that central Alabama will add to it
in the week ahead, with average rainfall amounts around one half inch
during the coming five days. A persistent battle zone will set up
just to our northwest as we find ourselves under that southwesterly
flow. A strong ridge of high pressure will be anchored over the Gulf
of Mexico, cutting off the deep moisture. But the flow from the
Pacific will feed into a wavering frontal system that should approach
on Monday, increasing our shower chances. The front will slide into
Central Alabama briefly, before pushing back northward on Tuesday. A
disturbance passing to the north will trigger more showers and maybe a
storm by Tuesday afternoon, with a pretty good chance of rain Tuesday
night over the Tennessee Valley. The front will hang just to the
north through Wednesday, keeping us in chances of showers and perhaps
a storm or two. Thursday and Friday look mild and breezy with a
slight chance of showers. We may stay basically locked into that
pattern through Christmas, with the next big chance of rain coming
around the 28th.

GEMINIDS SKY SHOW TONIGHT – CANCELLED BY CLODUS? The current bright
full moon will dim the prospects of seeing up to 100 meteors from hour
from this year's Geminid meteor shower. The Earth is passing through
the remains of extinct comet Phaethon 3200. Tonight will feature the
best viewing, from about 10 p.m. until dawn. Unfortunately for us in
Central Alabama, clouds will be a problem.

ON THIS DATE IN 1962: Record cold in the Deep South. 12 degrees at
Jacksonville, 18 at Tampa and 35 at Miami were all records. 9
degrees at Blairsville GA established a state record for the month of
December. It was the coldest December weather of the 20th century in
Georgia and caused millions of dollars damage to crops.

...No Current Snow Threats...

THE OLD THERMOMETER IS TRENDING MILDER: After a good snow scare and
some very cold temperatures, Alabama weather is trending the other
way. Instead of highs in the 30s, we will see some 60 to 65-degree
temperatures from Sunday all the way through next week. Nights will be
fairly comfortable too, mostly 50 or better.
Flooding is still a problem today in a number of locations around
Alabama and I do not mean flash flooding. Instead, it is the flooding
of rivers and streams. We have not had much of that in the last couple
of years due to a continuing drought. The water levels will slowly
recede and we do not believe that showers expected later this week
will be heavy enough to send the rivers back out of their banks.

There were some amazing rain totals over the last several days with
two-day totals, commonly 5 to 7 inches, in a number of Central and
North Alabama locations. It is almost certain now that Birmingham will
end the year with at least a slight excess. Amazingly, some West
Central and NW Alabama locations had to deal with flash flooding and
accumulating snow at the same time. While many in NW Alabama were
enjoying the snow, it is too bad that a tragic accident happened north
of Hamilton on US-43. A woman died in the accident and a boy was
seriously injured.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC Championship Football game is at 1:00 this
afternoon at Legion Field in Birmingham featuring Grambling and
Jackson State. Perfect football weather, dry and cool, with about 52
at kick off and 48 by the end of the game. The wind will be SE at 6-12
mph, so if you are sitting in the stands, you will need to dress
fairly warmly.

A KNOCKOUT ICE STORM: An ice storm of historic proportions has hit
the NE USA. According to press reports, an estimated 1.5 million
people were without power in the Northeast. The ice load on trees and
utility lines is horrendous. It may be sometime next week before some
of the people can get power back. That storm system dumped a lot of
rain also with about 3 inches at both Boston, Atlantic City and New
York City.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: A bitter 32 below zero Saturday morning was
the low at Embarrass, Minnesota. 36 below was the coldest in Alaska at
Ft. Yukon. Warmest Saturday afternoon was 76 in Tucson.

ENORMOUS COLD AIR OUTBREAK: It is poised to pour into the USA
following a big storm system moving on the Pacific Northwest coast.
Late last night, winds were already gusting to 60 mph along the
Washington coast with 17-foot seas. Blizzards will spread across that
region of the country and all the way to the Upper Midwest. We are
going to hear of some very dramatic weather events in the coming week.

...No Snow In Our Forecast...

A GUMBO SOUP OF WEATHER: That is what I call the events yesterday.
There were so many different items on the weather menu and we had to
look at every one. That included heavy rain, flash floods, snow, a
variety of winter weather advisories, river flood warnings, flash
flood warnings and even a gravity wave. Because of so much going on,
the gravity wave in NW Alabama got little coverage. It happened during
the late morning in the NW corner of the state. Trees were uprooted
over two counties, including numerous trees coming down about 3 miles
south of Florence.

CATCHING UP: Amazing amount of rain across Alabama in the last 48 to
60 hours. Vic Bell, our Skywatcher for Black Creek and Etowah County,
reported 7.38 inches the last two days, bringing the total for the
year to 58.16 inches. He is at least 5 inches above normal for the
entire year. Other 48-hour totals:

7.39 Bear Creek
5.98 Broomtown
6.05 Noccalula Falls
6.44 NorthFork
10.00 Downtown Columbus, Miss. (thanks to Tom Waller)
Most of the snow fell in NW Alabama and it appears that Hackleburg
received one of the bigger amounts—around 4 inches. Some flurries fell
further south.

NEGATIVE REMARKS: We received an overdose of very angry remarks about
not getting enough snow yesterday. Most of those came in on the 33/40
Blog and by e-mail. Those Blog posts are anonymous using a screen
name. That has been going on for years. I remember a missed forecast
when I was in the NWS in the 1980s when we got over 80 telephone calls
the next day complaining. Virtually none of those were vicious.
Society has changed. We will roll with the punches. Life goes on.

WHAT IS AHEAD? Check our day-by-day forecast, but the weekend will be
generally pleasant with highs 55 to 60. Next showers arrive early in
the week.

GREAT BIG MOON: Be sure and check out the moon tonight. It is
supposed to appear as the biggest of the year. Gilbert Nicholson
reminds us that the sun sets one hour earlier today at 4:40 than it
did about 6 weeks ago.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Our storm went on to dump huge amounts of
rain up the east coast, including 4.23 as far north as Atlantic City
and 2.80 at Boston.
There is a misconception that it is more difficult to forecast snow in
the Deep South than other places. Not true. One time a major city in
the NE had no snow in the forecast and got a crippling blizzard. There
was almost a congressional investigation. Low temperatures this
morning included 27 below zero at International Falls and Cook,
Minnesota. The Alaska low was 32 below at Ft. Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I may have to have a conference with
Little Miss Molly. She indirectly caused me to fall out of bed in the
middle of the night. She was sound asleep so tightly against my legs
that I tried to slide off the bed and I wound up sprawled on the
floor. I crawled down to the foot of the bed to get leverage to pick
myself up. That little rascal came down to the foot of the bed and
dangled her head over the end to look at me and I am almost certain
she was laughing. I was not hurt. I will still play ball with her
today. Life goes on.

...Warmer Days Ahead...

CALM DAYS AHEAD: We are very thankful for a rather calm weather period
in the days ahead, after a wild week which featured a tornado outbreak
and a winter storm. With a sunny sky today, we are forecasting a high
in the upper 40s today with a chilly north breeze. Tonight, with a
clear sky and diminishing wind, we will drop quickly, and most places
will be somewhere between 25 and 32 by daybreak tomorrow. The weekend
remains dry with a warming trend; the high tomorrow will be in the mid
50s, and we will be very close to 60 Sunday afternoon. Some moisture
will begin to return Sunday, but at this point we are not going to
mention any chance of a shower.

NEXT WEEK: A few scattered showers are possible Monday and Tuesday as
a rather moist airmass moves up into the state; afternoon highs will
reach the 60s as the warming trend continues. Showers will be more
widespread on Wednesday as a cold front drifts into the northern
quarter of Alabama.

LONG RANGE: No sign of any serious Arctic outbreak for the rest of
December as a cold upper trough settles into the western U.S. Looks
like our weather will be relatively mild for the next couple of weeks
with occasional opportunities for rain. The chance of a White
Christmas in Alabama looks very very small at this point.

RAIN SURPLUS: Thanks to the big rain event this week in Alabama,
Birmingham now has a 2.12" surplus for 2008. Anniston still has a
deficit, but it is down to 1.26". Tuscaloosa continues to be one of
the driest spots in the state; they have a rain deficiency of 12.98"
for the year. Remember, one year ago some communities had a two foot
rain deficit for 2007!

AMAZING EARLY DECEMBER SNOW STORM: That was quite a snow storm
yesterday across the southern U.S. Here in Alabama, the heaviest snow
fell over the
northwest part of the state; Hackleburg in Marion County had 3 inches
of snow on the ground; amounts of 1 to 2 inches were reported across
parts of Lamar, Franklin, Lawrence, and Winston counties. One person
was killed in a car accident on a snow covered road north of Hamilton.
Snow was even heavier in some places to the west… How about…

8-10 inches in NW Jeff Davis County MS
3-6 inches across Marion County (Columbia MS)
6-10 inches southeast of Brookhaven
9 inches in Bogue Chitto in Lincoln County
6 inches fell in Opelousas LA
4 inches in West Beaumont TX

...The Talk of the Day - Snow...

EVERYBODY THINKING SNOW: Based on our communications today, everybody
in the whole wide world (well, let us just say Alabama) is thinking
about snow. That one word gets more people excited than any word in
Webster's Dictionary. And snow we have on the menu. There has been an
old saying among weather circles for many years that "a cold-core low
is a weather man's woe." That saying is as right as way. Sometimes,
when dealing with those, I want to jump off Little River Canyon.
However, I love weather too much and I want to live.

NOW THE FACTS: It is amazing how much snow fell overnight and this
morning all the way from SE Texas across South Louisiana and into
Central Mississippi late this morning and this afternoon. Some light
snow was beginning to spread into West Alabama this afternoon,
including some flurries 6 miles south of Russellville. Sleet has been
reported in Pickens County. Around Brookhaven, Mississippi there was 8
inches and an estimated 6 to 10 inches on the ground south and east of
Brookhaven. More than 4 inches of snow covered part of South
Mississippi this morning. Baton Rouge reported numerous accidents due
to their early morning snow cover. Even Houston got slightly over 1
inch of snow and there was some snow on the ground at Galveston.

As the low-pressure area moves NE tonight, we think the best chance of
snow will be across West/Central and Central Alabama with maybe 1 to 2
inches accumulating. Much of that will be along and south of the I-59
corridor. Since most of that will be occurring after dark, do not be
surprised to see just a few slippery travel spots, especially in the
higher terrain. With sunshine returning tomorrow, whatever is on the
ground will vanish quickly. The National Weather Service also has a
Winter Weather Advisory for a number of NW Alabama counties.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: We should have mostly sunshine Saturday and
Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 50s. Next chance of showers
about Monday.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: The Mayor of Hollywood, which is a small
town near Scottsboro in Jackson County of NE Alabama, was knocked down
from the force of a lightning bolt that struck in front of the
Hollywood City Hall Tuesday night. The mayor is also a volunteer
firefighter. He was in a bay in the fire department preparing to go
out on an emergency call when the lightning struck making a hole in
his office wall and knocking him off his feet. He was not seriously
injured. Do not mess with lightning.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Several Tornado Watches in the Carolinas and
Virginia this afternoon, part of our same storm system. Our low-
pressure area will move up the Atlantic coast into the NE and may even
be labelled a nor'easter before it leaves the USA. 8 below zero was
the low this morning at Flag Island and Warroad, Minnesota. 20 below
zero at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: little Miss Molly apparently heard some
distant thunder during the night, because when I woke up at my usual
5:00 a.m., she was missing. She finally came sleepishly out of the
clothes closet and she was not shaking as badly as earlier. She sure
has wanted to play today, but she was pre-empted by a cold core upper
low. Tomorrow I plan to let her schedule my day. I will get at least 5
ballgames with her. Life goes on.

A BAND OF SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER WESTERN ALABAMA
THURSDAY AFTERNOON. THE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN AS
ALL RAIN THURSDAY MORNING INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS. AS THE RAIN
SWITCHES OVER TO SNOW BETWEEN 2 PM AND 4 PM...THE SNOW COULD BECOME
HEAVY AT TIMES. CONSEQUENTLY...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO 2
INCHES ARE POSSIBLE EVEN WITH SURFACE TEMPERATURES REMAINING ABOVE
FREEZING.

IN ADDITION TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SNOW...WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH
ARE EXPECTED. THIS COMBINATION COULD QUICKLY LEAD TO LOW
VISIBILITIES AND POOR DRIVING CONDITIONS THURSDAY AFTERNOON. THE
SNOW IS EXPECTED TO END QUICKLY BY EARLY THURSDAY EVENING.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR
FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.

...Snow For Parts of Alabama Today...

SNOW FLAKES FOR PARTS OF ALABAMA: A complex storm system will bring a
significant chance of snow to parts of the Deep South today. While
there is no real Arctic air around, a cold core upper trough will
literally bring it's own cold air, with dynamic cooling from above. A
cold rain falling this morning should change to snow as the upper low
moves into Alabama. At this point, it looks like the best chance of
accumulating snow will be over the northwest part of the state, across
Pickens, Lamar, Fayette, Marion, Walker, and Winston counties.
Communities in these counties like Vernon, Reform, and Hamilton have a
decent chance of seeing one to three inches of snow, with most of the
accumulation on grassy areas. Roads should remain wet due to above
freezing temperatures and warm soil, so major travel issues are not
expected at this time. For the rest of Alabama, a dusting of snow is
possible this afternoon for places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and
Gadsden.

We should note that in a situation like this you will often have a
very narrow band of heavy snow, with potential for 5 to 7 inches in
that band. But, there is very little skill in trying to pick that out
until the event really gets going. A similar event on December 14,
1997 produced 6 to 8 inches of snow along U.S. 80 from Jackson,
Mississippi to Demopolis, Alabama. Dealing with cold core upper lows
is very difficult, and our skill at forecasting them is rather limited.

WINDY AND COLD: Other than the rain and the snow, this will be a
rather raw December day, with temperatures holding in the 36 to 41
degree range, and strong northwest winds gusting to 25 mph at times.
Wind chill values will be below freezing much of the day. The wind
will diminish tonight as the surface low pulls away to the northeast,
and we should be clear by midnight.

FLASH FLOOD THREAT: We should note that the ground is totally
saturated following the big rain event Tuesday night/Wednesday
morning, and a flash flood watch
continues this morning for much of central and east Alabama. Some rain
totals from this event so far include 6.98" at Guin, 5.16" at
Scrougeout (northeast of Gadsden in Etowah County), 4.77" at
Huntsville, 3.77" at Hackleburg, 3.67" at Gadsden, and 3.02" at
Vinemont,

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: These three days should feature rather
uneventful weather conditions, with a high tomorrow in the upper 40s,
followed by highs in the 50s on Saturday and Sunday. A morning freeze
is likely tomorrow and Saturday.

DECEMBER TWISTERS: AN EF2 tornado touched down in the community of
Sipsey (Walker County) during the pre-dawn hours yesterday, producing
significant damage. EF1 tornadoes were reported near Branchville, and
at Oakman in Walker County. Thankfully there were no injuries due to
the severe thunderstorms.
