...Beautiful Saturday...

A beautiful Saturday afternoon was in progress across North and
Central Alabama. A strong ridge of high pressure extends out of the
western Atlantic back into southern Georgia. The clockwise flow
around the huge anticyclone is producing increasing southwesterly
winds over the Mississippi Valley and Deep South. Wind advisories
cover areas to our west, where gusts over 30 mph have been measured.
Here in Alabama, winds were averaging some 10-20 mph with occasional
higher gusts. Scattered cumulus clouds were spreading northward over
Southwest Alabama. Temperatures had warmed into the middle and upper
60s. Some spots may top out around 70.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: Clouds could become cloudy overnight as stratus
clouds form as Gulf air moves northward. Lows will be in the middle
40s. We could start off gray on Sunday, but the clouds should break
up as we move through the morning hours. Tomorrow will be a degree or
two warmer than today, with upper 60s common and a few spots reaching
70. Lows will drop back into the upper 40s Sunday night. Monday
promises to look a lot like Sunday, with partly sunny skies and highs
around 70.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE: Two upper level disturbances will eject out
of a big upper trough over the southwestern United States this week.
The first will swing out on Monday, heading northeastward, but
weakening as it goes. By Tuesday, a much stronger disturbance will
swing out of New Mexico on Tuesday. It will spin up a surface low
over Northeast Texas. This low will intensify as it heads northeast.
Severe weather will be possible over a wide area from Texas to western
Mississippi Tuesday. It appears that a line of thunderstorms will
enter western Alabama on Wednesday. Wind fields will be very strong,
but instability will be the question. It is too early to get specific
in terms of the severe weather threat, but damaging winds look
possible. The Storm Prediction center has outlooked all of Alabama
for the possibility of severe weather on Wednesday. It is a situation
that will bear watching.

THURSDAY AND BEYOND: High pressure will build into Alabama on
Thursday, giving us fine weather, even as another disturbance heads
eastward out of California. Rain and storms will spread back into the
state Friday afternoon, and rainfall amounts with this system could be
decent. Fair weather will prevail Saturday and Sunday, but another
wet system will return by Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1812: The Hard Shock of the New Madrid Earthquake
series struck the area around the small farming community of New
Madrid, Missouri. Seismologists estimate that the quake was an 8.8 on
the Richter scale, making it the strongest to ever strike the lower 48
states. A three-mile long island, Island # 32, was completely sunk!
The Mississippi River actually ran backwards. Shocks were felt as
far away as New Orleans and Montreal. This major shock marked the
beginning of the end of New Madrid's long ordeal, even though
aftershocks would continue to be felt for years. The 150 mile long
fault is still active, and the major population centers of Memphis,
Kansas City and St. Louis lie in the danger zone. Another quake would
create tremendous damage.

...The Warming Is Underway...

NO MORE TEETH-CHATTERING COLD: Just to show you how this young month
has been so far, at Tuscaloosa Airport the first five days of February
averaged 9 degrees colder than average. That is significant. We are
through with that for a while and now we go into a marked trend
upward, so much so that we expect highs over the weekend to be in the
upper 60s and probably 70 or better in parts of West and South
Alabama. Same story on Monday and Tuesday.
Meanwhile, lows at night will avoid the freezing mark like the plague
and by Sunday and early next week the lows will only be in the 40s.
Some NE Alabama valleys could drop to near 32 tonight. It looks like
mostly sunshine for Saturday and most of Sunday.

OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: We may have some showers by as early as
Tuesday, more so in the afternoon and evening. It still looks like our
better chance of showers will come at midweek covering parts of
Wednesday and Thursday. By Wednesday, a strong low-pressure area will
be moving across East Oklahoma and Arkansas. This will pull lots of
moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico. Those showers will probably
end early on Thursday as a cold front comes in from the northwest.
This may turn into an active situation at midweek and we most likely
will have some thunderstorms involved. Too early to tell if it will be
a severe weather risk. We can finetune that early next week. After
that cold front moves through late Wednesday night or Thursday
morning, we do not expect anything to compare with our recent cold
weather. Instead, the lows will be in the 30s or 40s and highs around
58 and 60.

HUGE TEMPERATURE CONTRAST: During the night, that high-pressure area
shifted toward the east and the wind began to stir, especially in
exposed areas. Some of the Alabama valleys remained mostly calm all
night. This led to big contrasts in morning low temperatures. It was
as much as 11 degrees colder way down in South Alabama than it was at
Birmingham Airport. Even in Jefferson County, it was 23 in Pinson
which was 13 degrees colder than Birmingham Airport.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Parts of China experiencing the worst drought in over
half a century. No rain in over 100 days for parts of North and
Central China. About
4.3 million people and 2 million livestock facing a shortage of
drinking water. 36% of the lower 48 with a snow or ice cover today
compared to 42% one month ago. In Alaska, Valdez has received 187
inches this season and Juneau 127 inches—more than double their
average. Cold temperatures this morning: 21 below at Whitefield, New
Hampshire and 37 below at good old Deadhorse, Alaska.

STORM ALERT 2009: The next one will be next Thursday evening at the
CHS building in Jasper. When I wrote the morning edition, I mistakenly
said it would be in Oxford. The one in Oxford will be on February 19.
As we always say, come early to get a good seat. They all start at
7:00pm and dismiss at 8:15 sharp.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had such an active ballgame with
Molly last night (I know you get tired of excess ballgame talk). She
would run all the way to the front door, retrieve the ball and come
back seemingly at 80 mph, dump the ball at my feet and proceed past me
and vigorously ring the little backdoor bell like she needed to go.
Only thing, she did not need to go. She was just trying something
extra to make the ballgame more interesting. At one point, she stood
on her two hind legs and popped the bell so hard it sounded like a
come-to-lunch dinner bell in the cotton fields of Hale County. In
those good old days, farmers may be working a mile away from home at
lunchtime, but that bell could be heard for two miles. Life goes on.

...Finally Some Warmer Weather...

THERMOMETERS TURN OPTIMISTIC: It sure is interesting to hear opinions
from people when we have severely cold weather in the winter as
compared to summer. Some like it cold; some like it hot. A number of
our readers are now demanding, in a friendly way, some warmer
temperatures. They are just around the corner.

A large high-pressure area was sitting down resting directly over
Alabama today. Winds were much, much lighter, so the chilly
temperatures were more userfriendly. Dew points were still very low
during the day, but they will start upward later tonight. Translation:
not as cold. By daybreak tomorrow, that big high will be centered over
South Georgia and a light SW wind will set in across Alabama by
daybreak. This is going to be one of those nights where it will be a
lot colder over near the Georgia border and near the Mississippi
border. We are calling for an average low of 24 over Central Alabama.

FAST FORWARD TO THE WEEKEND: I think people will be cheering by this
weekend as temperatures reach well into the 60s every day from
Saturday through Monday. Over on the west and SW side of the state,
the tired old thermometers should push 70 by Monday. After the not-so-
severe freeze tonight, minimum temperatures will be more comfortable
in the 40s.

MINNESOTA-LIKE TEMPERATURES IN ALABAMA: Well, not quite, but it sure
felt somewhat like Minnesota when we crawled out of bed this morning.
For a number of locations, it was the coldest morning so far this
winter. We have a long list on the weather Blog, but here are a few
selected morning lows:

4 in Broomtown
5 Camp Hill
7 Scrougout, Grantley
9 Hamilton, Muscadine
10 Lafayette
12 Ft. Payne, Cullman, Pleasant Grove
13 Anniston Airport
15 Birmingham Airport
17 Tuscaloosa Airport

STORM ALERT 2009: (Note from James Spann) Our annual severe weather
awareness tour across Alabama rolls along; tonight is our only
Birmingham metro show on the tour. We will be at the Trussville Civic
Center; the show begins at 7:00, but the doors open at 5:00. I will be
there doing the weather live on ABC 33/40 News at 5:00 and 6:00, and
you will have a chance to meet our entire weather team. Everyone that
comes will get a cool ABC 33/40 Storm Alert mouse pad to take home,
and we will also have some NOAA Weather Radio receivers to give away,
thanks to our friends at Handy TV. Of course, you will see some great
Alabama weather stories, including a pretty funny one about how some
politicians are wanting to tax farmers because their cows pass gas and
create global warming. We promise a fun time, so bring the whole
family. We hope to see you tonight!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes my little 9-pound pal can look
very disappointed if she is ignored. She never meets a stranger. This
morning we were walking in the bitter cold. She had her sweater on and
looked so cute. We met a person coming down the walking track. Molly
made me wait so she could greet that person. As the guy approached,
her tail was swishing like a weedeater. He totally ignored her and she
looked so hurt. A Milk Bone treat made her forget it. Life goes on.

...Another Very Cold Night...

TAKE HEART, IT WILL NOT BE COLD FOREVER: We certainly had an overdose
of arctic air in the last 24 hours and we must endure another very
cold night tonight. That will be the worst of it. The old beat up
thermometer should recover to the mid 40s Thursday afternoon to near
60 on Friday and in the mid to upper 60s by the weekend.

The dew point is still extremely low across the region. It will not
feel as cold tonight because the wind will not blow nearly as much. In
fact, later tonight and into tomorrow morning the wind will be
practically calm because a nice high-pressure area will be parked
right over us. Translation: the temperature will drop like a rock
after the sun goes down and by daybreak it could be just as cold as it
was this morning, but without that menacing wind chill.

THE RAIN SITUATION: We look for dry weather on through the weekend.
Our next chance of rain should be about next Monday and Tuesday, but
not a big rain event at that time.

THE BITTER COLD OF LAST NIGHT: Numerous low temperatures are on the
ABC 33/40 BLOG. Some of the hourly reporting stations did not report
their final low until noon today. Among those: it was 17 at Birmingham
Airport, 16 at Anniston and Huntsville, and 18 at Cullman and Shelby
County Airport. A few of the colder temperatures in the entire state
this morning included 9 at Hamilton; 12 at Vernon and Remlap; 13 in
Lincoln, Cottondale; and 14 at Crossville and Scrougout. It was bitter
cold all the way into South Alabama, even Fairhope and Brewton had 25,
Mobile 26 and Gulf Shores 28.

STORM ALERT 2009: Episode number two is at the brand new Trussville
Civic Center Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. It is a very nice facility,
but still get there early to get a good seat. The 33/40 weather team
will be doing the program and you should be out of there by around
8:15. There are some prizes during the event.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS: Some extremely cold weather overnight,
including 22 below zero atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smokies with 6
inches of snow. That is not the all-time low for LeConte because on
January 21, 1985 it was 31 below at the same location. It was 12 below
at Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina this morning.

GLOBAL ROAMING: This continues to be a winter to remember in many
areas. It was 36 below zero this morning at Babbitt, Minnesota where
there is 2 feet of snow on the ground. It was 53 below in Tanna,
Alaska. Valdez has 46 inches of snow on the ground. Yesterday the wind
chill dropped as low as 93 below at Hooper Bay, Alaska while the
temperature was 54 below. In the Kentucky ice storm region, it was 11
in Louisville this morning and they are expecting 9 above zero tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was not a thunderstorm. There was no
lightning for hundreds of miles. There was not even any sudden loud
noises. Instead, a long time before daybreak today our fire alarm went
off and it makes the worst noise you can imagine. Little Miss Molly
was dead to the world. Translation: sound asleep. Brinks called from
Dallas right away and the Trussville Fire Department was automatically
notified. The whole gang jumped out of bed. Little Miss Molly was
racing through the house scared to death and looking for one of her
safe places from thunderstorms. The piercing noise was in all of those
places. It took a long time to calm her down. Turned out that a candle
was left burning upstairs and it set a small piece of fabric afire.
Brinks cancelled the Fire Department run. We are lucky and life goes on.

...More Very Cold Weather...

HOW ABOUT 17 THURSDAY MORNING: We sure have been turning our weather
eyes toward the north a lot lately from whence cometh our wintry
weather. We have had a whole series of cold fronts this winter. We
have another one moving through the state this evening. It crossed the
Canadian border very early yesterday and was moving into NW Alabama
early this afternoon. This is a fast-moving weather system and by
midnight the front should be moving into the Northern Gulf of Mexico.
These fast-movers are sometimes called Alberta Clippers, although I
would rather call them Winnipeg Windjammers.

Enough of that, we have got to get ready for another hard freeze. We
expect the average low across Central Alabama by morning to be near
20. It is going to feel colder than that because we will still have a
fairly stiff wind out of the north all night tonight and even stronger
during the day Wednesday. We have included a possibility of a few
snowflakes this evening, but do not plan to throw any snowballs. You
may not even see any. Even with mostly sunshine tomorrow, we will
struggle to get to the upper 30s and the wind chill will be in the
teens at times.

We have an interesting situation for Wednesday night and Thursday
morning. This arctic air is extremely dry—even drier than usual. We
look for the dew point to drop to as low as 2 degrees tomorrow
afternoon. A high-pressure area will be sitting right over Alabama
Thursday morning and, with those exceptionally low dew points, we have
lowered our minimum temperature to an average of 17. You know the story
—in some of the North Alabama valleys it could be 5 or 6 degrees
colder than that. Finally a warming trend starts Thursday afternoon
and it becomes more pronounced Friday and Saturday. The old
thermometer should reach the mid 60s Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It
looks like our dry weather will last at least until early next week.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Sure is good to see a number of Alabama residents in
Kentucky to help in ice storm recovery. This includes Alabama Power
crews and a lot of other volunteers. Too bad that a blast of cold air
had to move across that area today and parts of Kentucky were even
getting some more snow. It is going to be well down in the teens
tonight in the ice storm country. Great Smoky Mountain National Park
is going to have some real wintry weather also. As much as 2 to 12
inches of snow will accumulate from moderate to heavy snow showers
tonight through Wednesday with the bigger amounts in the high country.
Temperatures will drop to between zero and 15 during this time and the
wind chill as low as 15 below. The colder blast will be in the high
country.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I want to do a brief story tomorrow
about one of our readers whose small new dog has adopted their new
human baby and they are bonded forever. I love stories like that.
Little Miss Molly is so predictable. After her morning walk, she comes
in and has a treat and then goes to that portion of the carpet that
has sunlight and takes a sunbath. She washes her front paws during
that time. Then she starts following me around giving me that old
baseball look and I have to eventually give in. I must admit I love
every bit of it. Sometimes at night she sleeps so close to us that it
is just like one of those beanbags you heat in the microwave to warm
your feet. Life goes on.

...Changeable Weather...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a continuing story of change. The weather
can get in an awful rut during the summer, but winter weather in the
Deep South does not stay the same very long. A cold front was moving
slowly SE through the state today. By morning, the front should be all
the way down in Florida. It will be clearing overnight and by morning
low temperatures will be in the upper 20s. The rain will be ending
down over SE Alabama later today and this evening.

Meanwhile, turning our eyes back to the NW, we already see another
mass of arctic air coming across the Canadian border and headed
straight for Alabama. This new cold front will reach the Tennessee
River by noon and Central Alabama by midafternoon. You will know when
it gets here because of a temporary increase in cloudiness and the
wind shifting around to the NW as high as 25 mph at times.
Might even see a few snow flurries with that front in the afternoon
and evening. No accumulation.

We are going to have some very low nighttime temperatures behind that
front. Here in Central Alabama, we have listed 21 for the average low
Wednesday morning and 19 for Thursday morning. The old backyard
thermometer will start going back up Thursday afternoon reaching 50
and all the way up to 60 Friday afternoon. It looks like lots of
sunshine beginning Wednesday.

As the front today moved SE, it brought widespread rain and even a
brief changeover to snowflakes on the higher terrain of NE Alabama.
Some decent amounts of rain occurred with over 1 inch at Vernon.
Birmingham received 0.78 bringing our excess for the young year to 1.45.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Reports out of London show that Britain is having the
coldest winter in over 10 years. Same story for much of France and
Belgium. London does not get a great amount of snow, but over the
weekend Heathrow Airport, a very busy world hub, had to cancel all
flights going and coming. Same story in Paris. Alaska is always an
interesting place. Over the weekend, there was a waterspout near
Sitka. This morning it was 44 below zero at Hooper Bay with a wind
chill of 69 below. Over the weekend, the actual temperature dropped to
a bitter 62 below zero at Chandalar Lake. Down here where 48 of our
states are neighbors, the coldest was 17 below at Devils Lake, North
Dakota. I have got to find out about that name. I certainly do feel
for everyone in Kentucky. An ice storm has to be one of the most
horrible things to go through with and the suffering is a whole lot
more widespread than a single F5 tornado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Watched the Super Bowl last night for
the first time in 3 or 4 years. It was a good game, but I still like
college football better. Saying all this to admit that I had to ignore
my Little Miss Molly for about 6 hours. She let me know it too by
making frequent stops in my office and glaring at me. This morning
after coming in from her walk, her feet were wet. She came running
over to me in the kitchen where there is a tile floor to greet me. She
put her paws up on my knee and her back feet skidded completely out
from under her and she turned a backward flip. One of the greatest
enjoyments I have with that little girl is that she is always glad to
see me. Even if I take a short trip to the store and come back, she
greets me like I have been away on a month-long vacation. Life goes on

...Will Snowless Streak Continue?...

Measurable snow has not been observed at the official reporting
station in Birmingham since January 28, 2000. That is a snowless
streak of 3,292 days. It is far and away the longest such streak in
Magic City history. The second longest streak is 2,225 days that
stretched from February 1, 1951 until March 6, 1957. I think that we
all believed that the streak was going to come to an end tomorrow. It
still might, even though the situation is no longer classic.

WHAT? SNOW? Looking outside today, you would think we might be
talking more about an approaching severe weather threat rather than a
winter weather one. Sunny skies and mild temperatures belie the fact
that winter will again rear its chilly head this week. Most spots are
heading toward the lower 60s for afternoon highs today. Tonight will
feature increasing clouds in advance of our next weather maker, a
trough digging southward through the northern Plains states. Lows
should drop into the lower 40s.

CHANGE BACK TO WINTER: A cold front, the vanguard of the approaching
trough, will enter Northwest Alabama late tonight. It should be near
the Birmingham area around daybreak. Behind the front, temperatures
will start to fall. Our snow forecasts were pinned on the possibility
that a strong low would form in the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately for
snow lovers, the low will be weaker and further south than originally
depicted by the models. This means the moisture and cold air will not
get a chance to interact, except for a brief period at the end of the
precipitation tomorrow afternoon.

We could see a brief changeover to snow across the northern half of
the state. More snow showers could occur on Tuesday as a disturbance
passes by the area. All in all, a few spots may see a dusting on
grassy areas and roofs, but travel is not expected to be a problem.
It will turn much colder with highs in the lower 40s Tuesday and
Wednesday highs likely to stay in the 30s. Expect a hard freeze
Wednesday morning, with lows well down in the 20s. Things will start
to moderate on Thursday and we will be back in the 60s by Saturday
ahead of our next weather maker, a cold front that will try to run
the gauntlet against a tropical subtropical ridge over the Southeast.
Look for rain and storms by late in the weekend.

SUPER BOWL WEATHER: Initial forecast had believed that the Super
Bowl in Tampa today would be plagued by poor weather, but that did not
materialize. Clear skies are expected, with temperatures falling out
of the 60s and into the 50s during the game. A light southerly wind
will shift around to the east, but remain less than 5 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Tornado touched down at Commerce Landing along
the Mississippi River in Tunica County, Mississippi. The storm cut an
8-mile path to Clark, Mississippi. Seventeen people were killed in a
plantation school at Commerce Landing, making it the third deadliest
school tornado disaster in U.S. History. The heroic teacher died
trying to save her students by shepherding them into ditches. The
rebuilt school was named after her. One dead child was blown one half
mile. The event was not officially called a tornado at the time.
