...Welcome To February!...

Average temperatures in February are not much different from the rest
of the winter in Birmingham. In fact, there is not much range in
temperature between mid-December and mid-February. Temperatures are
the start of the second month in the Magic City begin with highs
around 55F. Lows at the beginning of the month average around 33F.
By the end of the month, highs will be averaging around 62F and lows
around 39F. One interesting note: the long term average low for
February 29th is 33F. It is just one fourth of the sample size since
it only occurs every four years. We have seen temperatures as high
as 81F in the month, and lows as cold as -6F. We usually get 4.21
inches of rain in the month, although 15.80 inches fell in 1980. It
usually rains on 10.2 days in the month and storms on 2.3 days. It is
the second cloudiest month, but the third least sunny. Go figure.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today will start off clear and chilly, with
temperatures in the 30s. Clouds will gradually increase during the
day as we get ready for our next weather system. That system is an
upper trough over the northern Plains that will be shifting
southeastward. All week, we have been basing the forecast on the
idea that a surface low will form in the northern Gulf. While that
low is still expected to happen, it appears that it will be further
south and much weaker than the models had depicted over the past
several days.

SNOW CHANCES SLIPPING AWAY: The forecast had been based on judging
whether the incoming cold air and moisture would overlap to produce
some snow across North and Central Alabama. For now, it appears that
the main player in our forecast will be the cold front, at the leading
edge of the colder air bring driven by the approaching trough. Rain
should move into Alabama after midnight tonight as temperatures drop
into the low 40s. It will spread eastward across the state. As the
colder air spreads into the state from the northwest. Areas along
US-278 and points north could see some snow accumulation during the
late morning. Road conditions will have to be monitored. As the
colder air pushes further south, the moisture will be exiting stage
right. There may be a brief changeover to snow by late afternoon in
the Vernon to Birmingham to Anniston areas. There could be a light
dusting on grassy surfaces and roofs, but roads should stay clear.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: Tuesday will be a blustery and colder day. A
significant disturbance will swing through on Tuesday, and could
produce some snow showers. Any areas that see a little heavier
precipitation could get a dusting, but significant problems are not
anticipated. Wednesday will be another cold and windy day, with
temperatures barely getting out of the 30s in most spots. Things will
start to moderate by Thursday. The forecast is a little uncertain for
the weekend, but it could be wet.

ON THIS DATE IN 1899: The U.S. Weather Bureau hurricane forecasting
center was moved from Kingston Jamaica to Havana Cuba, Observation
stations had been established in 1898 throughout the central and
eastern Caribbean by President McKinley, who reportedly feared
hurricanes more than the Spanish Navy in the Spanish American War. In
1902, the hurricane forecasting would be transferred to Washington.

...Snow Chances?...

Snow is my favorite weather phenomenon. The first snow even that I
remember happened around 1967 or 1968. On a Friday night, they broke
in on the television while we were watching the Partridge Family or
Brady Bunch, or perhaps Love American Style. The breaking news was
that it was snowing in Birmingham, and that roads were becoming
slippery. We were overjoyed. On Saturday morning, there was a thin
blanket of snow, at least an inch deep. It was Snowball City.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Today has been a beautiful day, with blue skies and
seasonably cool temperatures. Tonight will be clear and cool, with
overnight lows in the lower and middle 30s. Tomorrow will dawn sunny,
but clouds will be on the increase through the day and become cloudy
overnight. Highs tomorrow will feel almost springlike, with afternoon
readings in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Rain will arrive in western
sections late tomorrow night as a low pressure area develops in the
Gulf of Mexico South of Louisiana.

ROBBING OUR JOY: At least half of the fun in winter weather is
tracking the patterns and following the models to see what is going to
happen in a particular weather event. Snowstorms prompt more comments
and excitement that any other weather happening in Alabama. But I
think that it robs us of some of the joy and excitement when it
actually does happen. Of course, it is getting hard for many of to
remember the last time that it did snow in Birmingham, back in
2000. January 28, 2000 to be exact. We have been speculating on
this shot at wintry precipitation for nearly a week now, with all of
the discussion centered around a low that may or may not develop, may
or may not be strong, and may or may not follow such and such a
track. Everyone gets frustrated and little burned out on the whole
event by the time it happens, or is often the case, doesn't happen.

SNOW CHANCES: So with that said, what are the chances that we will
get a little white stuff on Monday? The models have been consistently
downplaying
the role of the Gulf low with this system. This would reduce the
expectations of there being a big snow event for sure. It appears
that the invading cold air will overlap the tail end of the
precipitation during a two to three hour time period on Monday, most
likely during the early afternoon. This could result in a dusting of
snow from I-20 northward, with accumulations possible on grass, cars
and roofs. Roads should be ok with temperatures remaining above
freezing until late evening. There could be a stripe of 1 to 2 inch
accumulations somewhere over North Central Alabama and we caution that
this could all change with any shift in the models. We will be
watching carefully for any sign of that.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will be cold and windy with highs remaining
in the 30s. Look for a hard freeze Tuesday, with lows in the teens.
There could be a little light snow Tuesday afternoon or night.
Wednesday will be cold, but things will start to moderate by Thursday
and on into the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: After extremely warm temperatures the day
before, the mercury plummeted 85 degrees in 36 hours at Great Falls
MT. Valentine NE recorded a temperature drop from 70 degrees to zero
in just 9 hours. Wind chills fells to -80 degrees in Montana. The
extreme cold caused the brakes on a freight train to fail. The train
rolled into Helena MT and exploded. Extensive damage resulted.

...Snow In Our Forecast?...

Your know that your weekend weather shift is going to be interesting
when you show up for work and colleague meets you at the door and
tells you he is happy to be turning the snow project over to you.
"Quite a puzzle", he said. When J.B., the Great Alabama Weather
Legend is puzzled by the forecast, us mere weather mortals have to
worry. A lot is on the line here. Snow fans all across our great
state are pleading for a break in our snow drought.

COUNTING OFF: It has been 3,291 days since we last saw measurable
snow in the Magic City. Will that snow drought continue? There are
still more questions than answers at this point. But let's look under
the hood of this forecast.

YOUR WEEKEND: A passing disturbance brought clouds to much of the
northern half of the state overnight. A few sprinkles and flurries
even showed up on radars late last evening. The clouds kept low
temperatures from realizing their full potential last night, but it
was still chilly. Today will be sunny and slightly on the cool side,
with highs near 50. Tonight will be clear and chilly, with lows right
around freezing. The warm up will begin in earnest tomorrow as our
winds take on a southerly component. Tomorrow will feature a nice
south breeze and highs in the lower 60s. Clouds will increase by
late Sunday afternoon with rain beginning overnight as a low forms off
the Louisiana coast.

SNOW CHANCES: Rain will be widespread Monday morning as the low
passes to our east. As it does, it will draw colder air into its
circulation and the rain will changeover to snow during the afternoon
hours starting over Northwest Alabama. The transition line will slide
southeastward through the afternoon and into the overnight.
Questions still persist about the phasing of the colder air and
moisture, as well as the track and intensity of the low. All these
factors influence the possibility of wintry precipitation. For now,
we will call for a dusting for areas along and north of I-20. There
will be a stripe of slightly heavier accumulations somewhere in this
zone, perhaps in the one to two inch range. Tuesday will be blustery
and cold with a few snow flurries. Look for a hard freeze Tuesday
night. Wednesday will continue cold, with temperature moderation
waiting until Thursday, when our winds become southerly again. The
weekend looks breezy and mild before rain returns on Monday.

OUT IN VOODOOLAND: There are signs that spring may make an early
appearance in the 8-15 day time frame here in Central Alabama with a
big ridge over Florida and a large trough to our west. This will
allow mild temperatures and unsettled weather to affect Alabama and
the Deep South.

ON THIS DATE IN 1964: Eleven months of severe drought was forcing
koalas in parts of Australia to abandon their young and enter
residential areas in search of water. One of the worst droughts in the
last century in Australia was setting off massive brushfires and
causing he problems for agriculture. Over 87% of New South Wales was
being affected by severe drought. Over 70% of the nation was facing a
severe rainfall shortage.

...Unsettled Weather Models...

NEGOTIATING WITH SNOW: We are still wrestling with a potential snow
event later Monday and Monday night. Late this morning we had a
conference on our instant messaging net to discuss all the variables.
James Spann, Jason Simpson, Ashley Brand, Bill Murray, Brian Peters
and myself debated for 30 minutes or more trying to thrash out the
differences in the models and other evidence of possible snow. I
believe it was General George S. Patton that once said, "If everybody
is thinking alike, then somebody is not thinking." When we closed the
conference this morning, we had done a lot of thinking and we were
generally all on the same page.

The weather models continue to argue with each other and some are
hardly speaking. However, evidence began to pile up that the surface
low in the Gulf of Mexico, which we have been watching like a flight
of hawks, will probably take a more eastward track than earlier
expected. This will tend to lessen our chance of snow, but we urge you
that this is not sealed in stone. It is not even sealed in Silly Putty
yet. With the expected surface low now expected to move off the NE
coast of Florida and up the Atlantic Coast, either hugging the
coastline or staying off shore, the moisture will pull away from
Alabama earlier. So, this is the scenario that we came up with and
James Spann entered it on the 33/40 weather blog. This is what we
think: Rain begins after midnight Sunday night, becoming widespread
Monday morning. Temperatures should be in the 35-40 range Monday
morning, so it will be a chilly rainy morning. Rain will change to
snow during the day, mostly in the afternoon across North Alabama.
With the rain snow line moving from NW to SE. These are the estimated
times to change over to snow on Monday.

Noon in Muscle Shoals:
1:00 p.m. in Haleyville
3:00 p.m. in Jasper
5:00 p.m. in Birmingham/Tuscaloosa
6:00 p.m. in Anniston/Gadsden

It is still too early to mention amounts. Some parts of North Alabama
have and outside chance of 1 to 3 inches, but there is not enough
evidence even for that at the moment. Most of the significant
precipitation will be gone by Monday evening, but some flurries could
occur on Tuesday.

GLOBAL ROAMING: It is going to be very interesting to watch that
storm go up the East Coast. It should deepen into a super powerful low-
pressure area by the time in passes off New England. It will be very
interesting to see the wind gusts on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire
about Tuesday. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 34 below at
Embarrass, Minnesota. In Alaska, the coldest was 45 at Arctic Village.
It is getting colder across the great North Country again. Hooper Bay
was reporting a wind chill of 68 below zero. Two sample snow amounts
from Alaska: 52 inches at Valdez and 19 inches at Whittier and
Fairbanks.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had planned to cuddle with my Little
Miss Molly a whole lot after going to bed, but I fell asleep. I am
still winning her back after giving her a spanking. I think she has
completely forgiven me now. I had at least 5 ballgames with her last
evening and 3 more this morning. I still feel for people who have to
put their pets down or give them down due to the economy. In the last
5 years, I have received at least 50 e-mails with situations like
that. It is always a sad story and sometimes I post their stories to
make us all appreciate our pets even more.

...Lots of Excitement In The Air...

SNOW FANS ARE WIDE AWAKE: There is much excitement in the air and it
is not about college football, recruiting, basketball or even the
Super Bowl. It is weather excitement and I do not believe I have ever
seen it at such a fever pitch. All of this, of course, is due to a
possible snow event Monday. Right off we must say that this is early
Saturday morning and it is too early to try to estimate snow
accumulations if they occur. This is another case (and a typical one
for Alabama) where there will be a tedious balancing act concerning
how soon it gets cold enough to snow and how much moisture is still in
the picture. Latest trends indicate there will be plenty of moisture
with this system.

Much of that will fall as rain Monday and some areas will get over ½
inch of rain. We are calling for a steady cold rain Monday becoming
mixed with or changing to snow at some point Monday afternoon and then
snow continuing Monday night. Tuesday will be a raw day for sure with
occasional snow flurries or snow showers, especially through the
morning. Temperatures will do good to get up to freezing accompanied
by NW winds gusting to 30 mph at times.

WHY ARE WE HAVING ALL THIS EXCITEMENT? For days, all of the
dependable weather models have projected a low-pressure area to form
over the North Gulf of Mexico. At this writing, it has not started to
develop. It is near certain that it will. At some point it should be
centered south of the Mobile/Biloxi area. The track is projected to go
across NW Florida, SE Georgia and into South Carolina later Monday. As
it continues up the east coast, moisture will pull away from Alabama.

ALABAMA ACCUMULATIONS: By this afternoon or this evening, we should
be able to estimate who has the best chance of getting the snow and
some possible accumulations. Today will be exciting to watch
everything unfold. So goes winter in Alabama and life goes on.

...Entering Exciting Territory...

STORM ALERT 2009: First, we mention the first instalment of Storm
Alert 2009. It is tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Greene County High School in
Eutaw. This is the first visit to Greene County. I am hoping that a
lot of my friends and relatives from my native Hale County will drive
over to Eutaw to see a very interesting program. The doors open at
5:00, so come early for a good seat. The program is over at 8:15.

NOW WE MENTION THE SNOW WORD: I wish it were possible for me to have
supernatural powers so that I could give every corner of Alabama a 2-
inch snow five times each winter and then let it melt within 24 hours.
That way we could satisfy a lot of people and still not paralyze the
state. One of these days some professor may want to study the snow
mania in Alabama. I have not even heard the Super Bowl mentioned all
week.

Right off I must mention that it is impossible to forecast amounts of
snow since it is nearly four days away. We will try to be a little
more specific in the morning edition tomorrow morning and especially
later in the day on Friday and also on Saturday. If we get snow, we do
not think it will arrive until some point Monday. The low-pressure
area projected to develop over the North Gulf of Mexico has not even
thought about doing so yet. Some of the models project that low to
move NE between Tallahassee and Ft. Walton then across South Georgia
and South Carolina and up the east coast. The chance of snow in
Alabama is a precarious balancing act to how much cold air will be
available before the significant moisture is pulled away from the
state. At this time, we will mention a cold rain on Monday, probably
changing to snow in the afternoon and at night—roughly over the NW
half of the state.

Meanwhile, we will discuss the weekend. We look for lows just below
freezing tonight. Saturday should feature mostly sunshine with low to
mid 20s at daybreak, but a more reasonable 54 in the afternoon. Sunday
should also be dry, but clouds will increase at night.

GLOBAL ROAMING: There are news reports today that the total damage
from Hurricane Ike last year has been raised to $18 billion. It
remains to be seen the total dollar damage from the big ice storm just
winding down, but it will be tremendous. News reports indicate about
25 people were killed during the ice and snow, including those from
traffic accidents. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 9 below at
Stanley, Idaho. You would not wish to be in Hooper Bay, Alaska today
with 40 below zero and a wind chill of 76 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly sure has been hanging
close to me the last few days as if she wants to reseal the bond
between us after my recent spanking. I have gone out of my way to talk
to her and love her. She curls up under my desk for long periods of
time. Every time I go to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, I pause long
enough to give her a head rub and belly rub. She loves those. As I
promised yesterday, I will never spank her again. A lot of readers
cheered that decision. Life goes on.

...Cold and Dry Weather...

CHILLY WEATHER RETURNS: Yesterday featured quite a temperature plunge
across Alabama; most communities were in the low 60s during the pre-
dawn hours, but dropped over 25 degrees during the day, with mid to
upper 30s common by mid to late afternoon. While the rain we dealt
with is gone, the cold air will stick around for a while. Actually,
today will be relatively comfortable with ample sunshine and a high
around 50 degrees this afternoon.

We should note colder air will roll down into the state early
tomorrow, and we will have a hard time reaching the low 40s tomorrow
with an icy north wind. There could be just enough moisture for a few
scattered light snow flurries tomorrow morning as the cold air arrives
and a strong upper trough passes overhead, but any precipitation
should be light and spotty. Then, a hard freeze is likely late
tomorrow night and early Saturday. Looks like most places will wind up
in the 20 to 23 degree range, but the colder valleys and protected
areas will see teens by daybreak Saturday.

THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: After the very cold start, we should warm
nicely Saturday, with a high in the low 50s thanks to a good supply of
sunshine. Sunday will be dry as well with a partly sunny sky and a
high in the mid 50s. Clouds will begin to increase Sunday night in
advance of a very interesting storm system.

SNOW ON MONDAY??? All global models are actually in good agreement for
Monday; a strong upper trough diving down into the Southeast U.S. will
spin up a surface low just south of Mobile Bay. This low will move
through South Georgia, then up the Atlantic coast as a major
nor'easter. Colder air will be pulled southward into Alabama on the
north side of the low, and the stage is set for widespread
precipitation. This setup often brings a very nice snowfall to parts
of the Deep South, but nobody, and I mean nobody at this phase of the
game knows where that magical rain/snow line will be. The snow could
fall in Nashville, Knoxville, Huntsville, Birmingham, Atlanta, or even
Montgomery. The devil is in the details, and we simply won't have a
good grasp on them until tomorrow or Saturday, when we will make a
specific forecast call. One way or another, much colder air will be
pulled down into the state in the wake of the storm system Monday
night and Tuesday of next week. Stay tuned.

TRAGIC DEATH: Our sister station in Little Rock, KATV-TV, reports the
police chief of Trumann, Arkansas was killed while helping his
community during the winter storm Tuesday. Chief Larry Blagg was
killed when a tree branch laden with ice broke and fell on him as he
was helping move fallen branches. Trumann Mayor Sheila Walters says
Blagg went into cardiac arrest. The 40-year-old police chief died on
the way to the hospital.

...A Variety of Weather...

NO MORE MILD 60s THROUGH WEEKEND: Finally, the colder air, that had
been icing down the Central U.S. with freezing rain and sleet, pushed
into NW Alabama early this morning. It moved south slowly, but by
midmorning it sped up and moved through the entire state. So, we were
a lot cooler this afternoon than yesterday when temperatures reached
the 70s over the entire state and very close to 80 in the south.

The progression of weather systems over the next several days will not
allow us to return to spring-like conditions. By tomorrow morning, low
temperatures should be 25 to 28 over the north and central part of the
state. On Friday, a reinforcing push of colder air will move in and
drop us to the low 20s by Saturday morning with some upper teens in
the colder valleys. Some temporary cloudiness will accompany that new
push of cooler air and do not be surprised to see a few snowflakes
Friday morning. Absolutely nothing to worry about.

RAMPANT SNOW RUMORS: Almost everyone that owns a computer has access
to a potpourri of weather information including weather models. Some
are latching on to expected conditions on Monday. By that time,
projections are for a low-pressure area to be moving inland from the
Gulf, possibly into the NW Florida/Alabama coast and continuing
northward. Meanwhile, colder air will be spilling in behind the low.
If cold air gets here quick enough, we will have to watch that for a
possible snow event. I am the wait and see type, so I would not yes or
no on snow this early, but I am saying all of this just to outline the
possibility.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Is this the year for avalanches? 20 people have been
buried and killed by snowslides in Europe during the last several
days. Earlier this winter, 12 or 13 died after all of the extremely
heavy snow in SW Canada and the USA Pacific Northwest. My copy of
National Geographic came yesterday and there is an excellent story
about Mt. Washington, New Hampshire including a graphic three-page
photo pullout of the summit. That is an amazing place. Recent snow in
the West increased the total at Alta, Utah to 102 inches. There are 20
inches on the ground at Hannagan Meadow in the White Mountains of
Eastern Arizona. The last time I was there, there was only one country
store located in a wide clearing in the Ponderosa and Spruce forest. A
coop observer was located there. Coldest in the USA this morning
included 29 below at Presque Isle, Maine and 45 below at Hooper Bay,
Alaska. Good old Deadhorse had 25 below with a wind chill of 56 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am now standing at attention with my
right hand over my heart and my left hand over my lungs taking an oath
that I will never, never, never ever spank Little Miss Molly again.
The majority owner and a number of readers insisted. She has only been
spanked about 3 times. The first one was when we first got her and she
plastered the master bedroom with two rolls of toilet paper that
looked like a blizzard. I spanked her lightly with a rolled up
newspaper and she slithered under the bed and stayed for an hour.
Afterwards, I noticed when I would bring in the rolled up Birmingham
News each morning she looked a bit frightened. Now, if Molly is
already awake and roaming through the house I will unroll the paper
before bringing it in. life goes on and it is strange how a little dog
can dictate a lot of my actions.

...Wet and Sharply Colder...

BACK TO REALITY: Yesterday was not your standard winter day…
temperatures soared into the upper 60s and low 70s, almost twenty
degrees above average values for late January in Alabama. But today,
we are reminded we are in the dead of winter as the weather turns cold
and wet. Periods of rain are likely, along with temperatures going the
wrong way. We should be close to 50 degrees at daybreak along the
I-20/59 corridor, but the temperature should steadily fall, reaching
the 30s this afternoon with an icy northwest wind. Rain totals around
one-half inch are likely, and the precipitation should taper off this
afternoon.

SNOW FLAKES? The cold air will move into Northwest Alabama early in
the day, and there is a chance that the rain could mix with, or change
to light snow before ending. The best chance of seeing snow flakes
will be northwest of a line from Vernon to Winfield to Haleyville and
on to Athens. Surface temperatures should be generally above freezing,
and the ground will be relatively warm. So, no serious travel issued
are expected if snow flakes do fall. Seems like the main part of the
state with some potential for light bridge icing is up around Muscle
Shoals, but even there it is a marginal situation.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Tomorrow will be cool and dry with a partly sunny
sky and a high around 50 degrees. Another shot of cold Arctic air
blows in here on Friday; we will struggle to reach the 40 degree mark
with a cold north wind, keeping wind chill index values below freezing
for much of the day. A hard freeze is likely Friday night; we will be
close to 20 degrees at daybreak Saturday, with teens likely for the
colder valleys across North and Central Alabama.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this point the weekend looks dry with a slow
warming trend; we should rise into the low 50s on Saturday, with mid
50s Sunday. Clouds will begin to increase Sunday night in advance of a
low pressure center forming in the northern Gulf of Mexico, which
poses an interesting forecast situation Monday.

Some global model runs pull enough cold air down into Alabama for a
chance of snow on Monday due to the Gulf low. We won't jump on this
solution just yet; let's wait on a few more model runs before we buy
into that idea. Just be aware that the concept is on the table.

CRIPPLING ICE STORM: Ice and snow shut down much of the nation
yesterday in the broad area from Dallas to Cincinnati. Numerous
traffic accidents were reported in the Dallas/Fort Worth area last
night; Ice accumulation of over one inch was common over the northern
third of Arkansas, where extensive tree damage and widespread power
outages were reported last night. To the east and north, winter storm
warnings are up today, where moderate to heavy snow is likely in
places like Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. Major
airport delays are likely in these cities.

...A Variety of Weather...

TURNING THERMOMETER UPSIDE DOWN: This afternoon, temperatures had
soared into the spring-like 70s over almost all of Alabama, including
some upper 70s in the south. At the same time, Kelley Rodgers was
sending us a report of thunder and lightning with freezing rain over
SE Missouri.
Our big job over the next 24 to 36 hours will be to figure out the tug-
of-war between these two different air masses and how quick the colder
air will cover Alabama. We are sure it will, but timing will determine
the temperature.

The digital bank thermometers and the old Royal Crown Cola thermometer
hanging on the barn will be going the wrong way tomorrow. We believe
the cold front will enter NW Alabama very early. It should be in the
Birmingham area around mid morning and all the way through the state
by Wednesday evening.

We could see a few showers after midnight tonight, but a more
extensive rain will occur during the transition hours Wednesday. Not a
huge rain event, but some places could get around ½ inch. The big
question is—frozen precipitation. While there is a remote chance that
we could get a mix of light snow with the rain in Central Alabama late
in the day. We do not see any problems. There should be no
accumulation. Across extreme North Alabama, rain may become mixed with
snow tomorrow morning and ending or diminishing in the afternoon and,
even there, no accumulation. It should not get cold enough quick
enough to cause any travel problems in our state.

OUR COLDEST TEMPERATURES: We should have a lot of sunshine Thursday,
Friday and Saturday with chilly afternoons and cold nights. Lows
should be in the mid to upper 20s Thursday and Friday mornings.
Saturday morning should be our coldest with a low near 20 with some
teens in the colder valleys. This means that we will go through
another temperature plunge of over 50 degrees between this afternoon
and Saturday morning. We have had several of those this winter.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Most of our roaming will be right here in the good
old USA where a significant ice storm is causing super problems from
North Texas up the Ohio Valley. Numerous trees were coming down under
the heavy load of freezing rain in Oklahoma, Arkansas, across South
Missouri and into Kentucky. Travel was nearly impossible in many
areas. Wyoming, Colorado and Utah got a whole lot of fresh snow. 16
inches of new snow at the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park
and 28 inches at Afton, Wyoming. There is now 102 inches of snow on
the ground at Alta, Utah. Do not remember that in a long, long time.
Over that heavy snow pack it was 36 below zero at Greybull, Wyoming
for the coldest in the USA.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am in deep trouble with the majority
owner over my treatment of our Little Miss Molly. I gave her only the
second spanking she has ever received on the walking track, because I
could not get her to come back home. Last night I did not spank her,
but I stomped my feet on the concrete during a midnight walk because
she was running around like crazy. I made up to her. The MO explains
that Little Miss Molly should be totally immune to spanking. I guess I
should agree mainly because of the hurt look in that the tiny eyes of
that little girl. Life goes on and Little Miss Molly sure keeps it
interesting.

...Roller Coaster Ride...

WARM, THEN COLD: Spring-like weather headlines our forecast today; we
expect temperatures to rise up into the upper 60s this afternoon with
a few intervals of sunshine along the way. Parts of West Alabama could
even see low 70s, almost twenty degrees above average values for late
January in Alabama. A few showers are possible, especially this
morning near a northward-moving warm front, but any showers should be
widely separated.

NOT TOO FAR AWAY: While we bask in very comfortable weather today, a
major ice storm is unfolding this morning from Oklahoma to Kentucky;
some of the cities dealing with freezing rain and ice are Dallas/Fort
Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Little Rock, Springfield, Paducah, and
Louisville. Ice storm warnings cover much of this region, and some
places could see enough ice accumulation for downed trees and power
lines, and extended power outages. Major travel problems are also
involved with ice covered roads and bridges.

ALABAMA TURNS COLD TOMORROW: A cold front will move through Alabama
tomorrow morning; along with the frontal passage will come periods of
rain and falling temperatures. We will fall from the low 50s at
daybreak tomorrow into the 30s by mid to late afternoon. Periods of
rain are likely during the day, and there is a narrow window for the
rain to become mixed with, or maybe even change to light snow before
the precipitation ends. At this time we don't expect any travel
problems along the I-59/20 corridor if we do see any snow flakes since
surface temperatures should be a little above freezing, and the ground
will be relatively warm. However, to the north, a few icy spots are
possible over extreme North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley where
temperatures could dip to near 30 degrees by evening. Still, we don't
expect major winter storm problems in Alabama at this time.

At this time Thursday looks cold and dry with a high in the upper 40s.
Then, an Arctic front moves in here (in dry fashion) Thursday night,
and will set the stage for a very chilly day Friday. Much of North
Alabama won't make it out of the 30s Friday, and a north wind of 10 to
18 mph will keep the wind chill index below freezing much of the day.

WEEKEND PEEK: We will begin the weekend with a hard freeze Saturday
morning; the average low will be near 20 degrees, but the colder
valleys and protected areas will easily see the teens. Then, we should
rise into the low 50s Saturday, and mid 50s Sunday. Dry air will cover
the state over the weekend and at this time precipitation is not
expected.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: Florida begins a three-day freeze. There was
tremendous damage to citrus crops with losses totaling $10 million.
Georgia's lowest temperature ever occurred on this date near Calhoun
with a reading of -17.

...Changeable Weather For Alabama...

BEST CHANCE OF RAIN AT MIDWEEK: This is not one of those sealed in
stone forecasts for Alabama. The weather will be changeable over the
next several days and there is always a chance that the timing could
get out of phase. This is what we think: only a slight chance of rain
tonight after midnight; a few showers tomorrow, but it is going to be
noticeably warmer, SW winds of 10-20 mph will shoot the thermometer
upward to about 68. That will not last long, because another cold
front will be entering NW Alabama Wednesday morning and moving all the
way through the state by Wednesday night. There will be a better
chance of some rain in connection with that front and temperatures
will be falling during the day.

We may start off with temperatures in the 50s and then dropping into
the 40s all afternoon and into the 30s Wednesday evening. Colder
temperatures can be expected Thursday and Friday. We believe both of
those days should be generally dry. Clouds will be moving out on
Thursday, leaving us with mostly sunshine on Friday. Our coldest
temperatures will come Friday morning with mid to upper 20s and
Saturday morning with low 20s. A high-pressure area should be over us
on Saturday morning, so some of the traditional North Alabama cold
spots may have some upper teens at that time.

ANY SNOW IN OUR PICTURE: Not really, but as the colder air moves in
there could be a mix of light rain and snow mixed over the NW corner
of the state Wednesday morning. There could even be a few patches of
light freezing rain on the higher ridges of NE Alabama.

OWENSBORO: We are using that North Kentucky city as an example of
some very serious wintry weather that is going to affect a wide area.
Wintry weather will exist from North Texas and Oklahoma NE through
Arkansas, Missouri, NW Tennessee and up the Ohio Valley into New York
State. Take note of these excerpts from the official forecast for
Owensboro. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until midday Wednesday,
so this will be a long drawn out event. As much as 2 to 6 inches of
freezing rain, snow and sleet expected to accumulate tonight with ice
thickness of about ¼ inch. Snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue
Tuesday with additional snow and sleet accumulation up to 3 inches and
additional freezing rain about ¼ inch. Bottom line: they are expecting
a storm total of snow and sleet accumulation of 5 to 9 inches.

In Northern Arkansas, the ice load may become so heavy that power
outages could last for many days. Travel is highly discouraged and may
become impossible.

GLOBAL ROAMING: This is hard to believe, but about 4 inches of snow
fell early in the weekend in the NE part of the United Arab Emirates.
That is desert country sandwiched between Oman and Saudi Arabia. It
was only the second snow event in memory. It was bitter cold over the
northeast again this morning. The official cold spot for the USA was
Masardis, Maine with 44 below. In my 500 years of weather work, I have
never seen that station mentioned.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I got a letter from USA Today this
morning. They tell me that because I am a continuing subscriber and
let me charge it to my credit card, that they are going to plant a
tree in my name somewhere in a national forest. I am going to write
them and ask where the J.B. tree is and go there and camp by it for a
week. A bit of excitement along our walking track Saturday morning.
The beautiful little 5-pound Yorkie that belongs to our neighbor got
ambushed by a larger dog. The little guy had a bloody knee and lower
leg, but not really injured. He was very scared when Molly and I
happened upon the scene, but the sight of Molly made him relax and wag
his tail. Molly is overdosed on ballgames over the weekend, but that
is only temporary. Life goes on.

...Remembering A Famous Cold Wave...

On this date in 1940, Birmingham and the Deep South were truly in the
Deep Freeze. It would be one of the longest and deepest cold waves in
American History. More about this famous Arctic outbreak in today's
ABC3340 Weather Blog.

MILDER WEATHER AHEAD: Sunday was a chilly day across North and
Central Alabama. Temperatures in the Tennessee Valley did not get out
of the lower 40s, because of persistent cloud cover. Readings in the
I-20 Corridor were near seasonable norms, in the lower 50s. An
easterly flow will keep things on the cool side again today, with
afternoon readings topping out in the middle and upper 50s. There
will be plenty of clouds around, mixed with some sunshine. The
easterly wedge will begin to break down tonight as southeasterly winds
kick in and a warm front moves north. Look for a few showers Monday
night, perhaps lasting into Tuesday morning. We could 70 degrees on
Tuesday. That looks to be a little optimistic, but middle to upper
60s are not out of the question.

MIDWEEK FRONT: Lots of differences in timing on a strong disturbance
that will push the front back south as a cold front sometime Wednesday
or Thursday. It looks most likely to occur Wednesday night. It will
be preceded by rain and perhaps a couple of storms Wednesday afternoon
and night. It will be breezy and warm ahead of the system, with
southerly winds of 10-20 mph and temperatures in the 60s on
Wednesday. Temperatures will fall quickly behind the front, falling
into the forties by Thursday morning and staying there through the
day. In fact, temperatures may fall into the 30s during the day
Thursday. It is not out of the question that there could be some
light snow on the back side of the system if the moisture hangs around
for a bit.

GULF SYSTEM? There are indications that a low pressure system will
develop over the Gulf by Friday and move northeast. It appears that
the front and the track of the low will be far enough south to keep
precipitation out of our area, but it will have to be monitored. As
the low sweeps by to the south, even colder air will plunge into
Alabama. We will see very cold temperatures Saturday morning when
lows will be in the lower and middle 20s, with teens in the colder
locations of North Alabama. The weekend should be dry. The pattern
will flip again by the next weekend with a couple of big storm systems
to follow.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: The City of Chicago had been basking in
unusually balmy winter weather. Residents marveled at the string of
beautiful sunny days, with temperatures even rising into the 60s. On
the 24th, a record high of 67F was recorded. But the next day, a cold
front sent the mercury plummeting and snow was forecast for the 26th.
Initial predictions called for one to two inches of the white stuff.
The snow started falling at 5:02 a.m. on January 26th. As people
headed to work, the forecast was changed to up to four inches. The
snow continued to fall throughout the day, and weather forecasters
couldn't keep up with it. Forecasts had to be constantly revised
upwards until reports called for up to fifteen inches. Twenty-nine
hours after it started, the unprepared city of Chicago was buried
under twenty-three inches of snow. It still stands as Chicago's
greatest snowstorm.
