...Cold and Dry Weather...

CHILLY WEATHER RETURNS: Yesterday featured quite a temperature plunge
across Alabama; most communities were in the low 60s during the pre-
dawn hours, but dropped over 25 degrees during the day, with mid to
upper 30s common by mid to late afternoon. While the rain we dealt
with is gone, the cold air will stick around for a while. Actually,
today will be relatively comfortable with ample sunshine and a high
around 50 degrees this afternoon.

We should note colder air will roll down into the state early
tomorrow, and we will have a hard time reaching the low 40s tomorrow
with an icy north wind. There could be just enough moisture for a few
scattered light snow flurries tomorrow morning as the cold air arrives
and a strong upper trough passes overhead, but any precipitation
should be light and spotty. Then, a hard freeze is likely late
tomorrow night and early Saturday. Looks like most places will wind up
in the 20 to 23 degree range, but the colder valleys and protected
areas will see teens by daybreak Saturday.

THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: After the very cold start, we should warm
nicely Saturday, with a high in the low 50s thanks to a good supply of
sunshine. Sunday will be dry as well with a partly sunny sky and a
high in the mid 50s. Clouds will begin to increase Sunday night in
advance of a very interesting storm system.

SNOW ON MONDAY??? All global models are actually in good agreement for
Monday; a strong upper trough diving down into the Southeast U.S. will
spin up a surface low just south of Mobile Bay. This low will move
through South Georgia, then up the Atlantic coast as a major
nor'easter. Colder air will be pulled southward into Alabama on the
north side of the low, and the stage is set for widespread
precipitation. This setup often brings a very nice snowfall to parts
of the Deep South, but nobody, and I mean nobody at this phase of the
game knows where that magical rain/snow line will be. The snow could
fall in Nashville, Knoxville, Huntsville, Birmingham, Atlanta, or even
Montgomery. The devil is in the details, and we simply won't have a
good grasp on them until tomorrow or Saturday, when we will make a
specific forecast call. One way or another, much colder air will be
pulled down into the state in the wake of the storm system Monday
night and Tuesday of next week. Stay tuned.

TRAGIC DEATH: Our sister station in Little Rock, KATV-TV, reports the
police chief of Trumann, Arkansas was killed while helping his
community during the winter storm Tuesday. Chief Larry Blagg was
killed when a tree branch laden with ice broke and fell on him as he
was helping move fallen branches. Trumann Mayor Sheila Walters says
Blagg went into cardiac arrest. The 40-year-old police chief died on
the way to the hospital.
