...Cold Start...

Greetings from Mt. Pleasant, Texas, a nice town a couple of hours east
of Dallas. I was here overnight for a hotel grand opening. I will
be winging my way eastward back to Birmingham in a few hours.

COLD START: The coldest morning of our current episode in this mini-
series we could call The Big November Chill, or an early Start to
Winter, or will Birmingham See Zero this Winter, was this morning.
Lows again reached the teens in colder spots, with everyone well down
in the 20s. More on the cold morning readings this afternoon.

YOUR WEEKEND: Fire danger will be high across Central Alabama today
as low humidities, northerly breeze and dry conditions conspire to
produce conditions
conducive to wildfires. Don't do any outdoor burning, and be careful
with any potential fire sources. Temperatures will rebound nicely
into the middle and upper 50s this afternoon as winds shift around to
the southeast. Tonight will feature lots of stars and temperatures
mainly in the upper 20s. Colder valley locations will be a little
colder. Most spots will see a freeze. Sunday will be fairly nice,
with lots of sunshine and highs around 60 degrees. Clouds will
increase Sunday night ahead of a fast moving system.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: By Monday morning, strong low pressure will be
moving through the Great Lakes region with a trailing cold front
approaching Alabama. Showers will be likely during the day on
Monday. Rainfall amounts should be generally around ¼ inch. The rain
should end during the afternoon with clearing overnight. Tuesday will
be sunny and seasonably cool.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: The Wednesday travel day will dawn clear and chilly
across Alabama, with temperatures around freezing. It will be colder
over the east, but temperatures should moderate nicely during the day
as southerly winds kick in. By Thanksgiving morning, showers and
storms will be breaking out from Arkansas into Texas. Those showers
and storms will arrive in Alabama Thanksgiving night, lasting into
Friday morning. Not good news for shoppers, but take heart, the
timing is still up in the air.

LONG RANGE: Recent runs of the GFS have been all over the board, but
there are indications that the first week of December will be wet,
with several storm systems affecting Alabama. One can only hope.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama and Auburn have the weekend off, but UAB
will host East Carolina tonight at 6:00 at Legion Field (CSS-TV),
where the sky will be clear. Temperatures will fall from near 48 at
kickoff into the upper 30s by the fourth quarter. Our attention will
turn to next week's Iron Bowl game in Tuscaloosa. There is a lot of
uncertainty in the forecast for now, but it appears that Saturday will
be cold with a chill north wind. There could be a little
precipitation.

ON THIS DATE IN 1956: Winds gusting to 25 mph in New York City
wreaked havoc on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The three major
balloons collapsed, including Mighty Mouse. Another balloon crashed
into a lamppost at 62nd Street and Central Park West.

...The Arctic Express...

CHANCE OF SHOWERS MONDAY: The bubbles of high pressure in the far
north containing cold arctic air seem to be poised awaiting their
chance to head south. That is why we have been getting so many cold
snaps in the last few weeks. The latest surge of colder air moved in
overnight and dropped temperatures to below freezing over much of
North Alabama overnight. It will be even colder tonight with an
average low of 23 across Central Alabama. This means that the colder
valleys will surely have lows in the teens, especially in the upper
teens. By Sunday, that high-pressure system will be over the Carolinas
and we can look for a warming trend with high temperatures near 60
Sunday and Monday. It looks like mostly sunshine for Sunday, but
scattered showers will occur on Monday only to see another surge of
cooler air on Tuesday.

HOW MUCH RAIN? Not a whole lot. We are calling for an average amount
of about 1/3 inch across Central Alabama. If a few places are real
lucky, it may be around ½ inch. It is getting very dry again across
much of Alabama. Not too long ago, Birmingham was showing a surplus
for the year, but by tomorrow the deficiency for 2008 so far will be
around 1 inch.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Extra warm clothing needed for the high school play
off games tonight. It should already be down to freezing for the 7:00
p.m. kick off at most stadiums and probably around 28 or 30 by the
final whistle. The only good news is clear weather with little or no
wind. In college football, Alabama and Auburn are resting tomorrow,
but UAB will host East Carolina for a 6:00 p.m. kick off at Legion
Field and televised on CSS. It will be clear with temperatures in the
40s at kick off and middle 30s by the 4th quarter.

SPEAKING OF DROUGHTS: That has been prominent in our news for the
last few years and there have been droughts all through history.
Another example of a super drought was way back in 1840 when fields
were already bleak and barren in June and famine seemed imminent. The
Black Warrior River at Tuscaloosa almost went dry and huge numbers of
fish died. In Montgomery, there was a light shower in early August,
then no more rain until late October. The Alabama River dropped too
low for navigation and Huntsville had only 29 inches of rain all year.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 19 inches of new snow at Crossingville, Ohio. There
was 7 inches of snow on the ground early today at Mt. LeConte in the
Great Smoky Mountains, 3 inches on Newfound Gap, 1 inch in Cades Cove.
The low on Mt. LeConte was 2 above zero. In Alaska, it was 35 below
zero at Ambler. There was 16 inches of snow at Whittier, Alaska. Our
friend at Hunter Street Baptist Church will get a big kick out of that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out real early with my little pal for
her morning walk. It was plenty cold and the entire countryside has
changed. I am glad in a way that the autumn color is gone. I always
get a bit nervous when it is still available to see—afraid that it is
going to be gone the next day. Molly was greatly pleased when we only
went ¼ mile this morning. Life goes on.

...A Chilly November Day...

A COLD WIND: Despite a sunny sky, temperatures will be very chill
across Alabama today; we figure most places will not exceed the mid
40s, with the persistent north wind making it feel even colder. Then,
another hard freeze is ahead tonight with temperatures dropping into
the 20 to 25 degree range by daybreak tomorrow. The coldest valleys
have a good chance of reaching the teens.

SLOW WEEKEND WARM-UP: Dry air means a sunny sky tomorrow and Sunday;
we will warm into the mid 50s tomorrow, and close to 60 by Sunday
afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school playoff games, you will
really need to bundle up. We are projecting temperatures in the mid
30s at kickoff, dropping to near 30 degrees by the final whistle. Some
stadiums in valley locations over Northeast Alabama could dip into the
upper 20s. A very cold night for football. Alabama and Auburn have the
weekend off, but UAB will host East Carolina tomorrow at 6:00 at
Legion Field (CSS-TV), where the sky will be clear. Temperatures will
fall from near 48 at kickoff into the upper 30s by the fourth quarter.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: A cold front will pass through the state Monday,
and will bring a chance of showers. At this point, it looks like
moisture will be limited, and rainfall amounts should be a quarter-
inch or less. The sky will become mostly sunny Tuesday, and the
weather looks pleasant on Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day, with sunny
mild days and clear cold nights. We expect a high in the low 60s
through mid-week, which is where we should be time time of the year.

VOODOO LAND: Beyond Thanksgiving, there seems to be a good chance of a
beneficial rain event, followed by a sharp change to colder weather
over the following weekend. There is very little skill in a specific
weather forecast beyond seven days, so it is a little early for
details; we will be able to nail that down in Monday's forecast package.

BITTER COLD AIR BUILDING OVER ALASKA: Coldest spot in the nation
yesterday was Chandalar Lake, Alaska with a bone chilling 42 below
zero. At Fairbanks yesterday, the high was 11 below zero, which
followed a low of -25. The low at Bettles was 36 degrees below zero.
Frigid air also covers much of Canada.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: The November 21-23 tornado outbreak was the
third largest outbreak in recorded history and was one of the longest
continuous outbreak ever recorded. There was no break in tornado
activity from 1:30 p.m. on the 21st when tornadoes started in Texas
until 7:30 am on the 23rd, when the last tornadoes lifted up in North
Carolina. On this date, 6 tornadoes were spawned in the Houston metro
area with 3 on the ground at one time in Harris county.

...Fresh Cold Air On The Way...

A PARADE OF COLD FRONTS: It almost seems like the arctic air over the
far north has established its own interstate highway system. Big globs
of cold air continue to escape from Alaska and Canada and head south.
I wish I could tell you how long this pattern will hold up, but I do
not know. Until it changes, we will have frequent cold fronts breezing
through our state and resupplying our weather pantry with fresh cold
air.

One of those fronts was coming down the pike this afternoon and by
morning it should be all the way down to the North Gulf of Mexico. A
big strong high-pressure system centered over Kansas will give us a
fresh north breeze tomorrow and keep our daytime temperatures into the
40s. By Saturday morning, the high should be centered over the SE
states, including Alabama, and that should be our coldest morning for
this particular visit. We expect lows Saturday morning to average
around 24 across Central Alabama. Experience with recent cold air
invasions would tell us that it should be in the upper teens Saturday
morning in at least some of the colder valleys of North Alabama.

Our recent cold morning, when we saw temperatures drop as low as 14 in
NE Alabama, brought a quick end to the growing season. It also gave
our remaining autumn color a good whipping and, for the most part,
even the ridges have subdued color now. But I sure enjoyed a fantastic
color season. This is only my personal opinion, but I would not mind
having autumn foliage staring me in the face 365 days a year. Much
more enjoyable than kudzu.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We do finally have some rain in the forecast.
Estimates are for about 1/3 to ½ inch occurring mainly Monday
afternoon and Monday night. Turning cooler again the next day on
Tuesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school play off games, clear and crisp
weather with temperatures around 38 around kick off and near freezing
in the 4th quarter. Not much wind. UAB will play East Carolina on
Saturday, televised on CSS. The game is at Legion Field with a 6:00
p.m. kick off. It should be near 40 at kick off and about 35 at the
final whistle. Alabama and Auburn do not play.

GLOBAL ROAMING: I looked at some snow survey satellite maps today and
it appears that virtually all of Alaska, 90% of Canada and extreme
Northern USA are snow covered. Over the North Pole, a huge part of
Russia, Greenland, Norway and Finland have a snow pack. In past
history, some of our most bitter cold in Alabama occurred with a cross
pole invasion of arctic air that then headed south all the way into
Alabama and Florida. We are not hinting at that, it is just one of the
50,000 little things we have to watch when dealing with weather. It
was 35 below zero in Bettles, Alaska this morning with a wind chill of
48 below. Coldest in the lower 48 was 3 above at Fryeburg, Maine.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, Little Miss Molly
and the community diplomat, has already proven that her IQ is higher
than mine. From day one when we got her, she would knock the fool out
of that little bell hanging on the inside back doorknob if she needed
to go potty. Now she has learned a new trick. She tries to knock a
home run with that bell when she wants to play ball. She tricks me. I
will leave my office, pick up the leash to take her out, only to have
her meet me in the living area with two balls in her mouth and another
one at her foot. She will toss all three of them at me. Translation:
playtime. Life goes on.

...Cold and Dry Though Sunday...

MORE COLD AIR ARRIVES TONIGHT: Temperatures will remain below average
across Alabama through the weekend as yet another surge of cold and
dry air arrives today. We should warm into the mid to upper 50s today,
but we go back into the upper 20s early tomorrow morning. Then, during
the day tomorrow, temperatures won't get out of the 40s with a chilly
north wind. Another hard freeze is ahead for Saturday morning, with
lows well down in the 20s, with upper teens for the colder valleys.
The weekend will remain dry with just a gradual warming trend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Cold is the word for the high school football
playoff games tomorrow night. The sky will be clear; temperatures will
fall from near 36 at kickoff into the low 30s by the second half. This
will be the coldest night yet for high school football this season in
Alabama; you will need a very warm jacket. A blanket and hot chocolate
will be needed! Some North Alabama stadiums could reach the upper 20s
during the second half of the games.

UAB plays their final home game of the season at Legion Field Saturday
night against East Carolina (6:00 kickoff on CSS); the sky will be
clear with temperatures falling
from near 48 at kickoff into the upper 30s during the second half.
Both Alabama and Auburn are off this week as they prepare for the Iron
Bowl on Saturday November 29; there is some hint in long range model
data that rain could be an issue for that game in Tuscaloosa, but we
can't be specific until late in the weekend.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: We will introduce a chance of showers late Monday
afternoon and Monday night thanks to a passing cold front; moisture
will be limited and rain should be light; mostly a quarter-inch or
less. Tuesday will feature a clearing sky, and Wednesday looks cool
and dry with ample sunshine. At this time, Thanksgiving Day looks dry
and pleasant, followed by a return of moisture and a chance of rain at
times by Friday and the following weekend. We will be much more
specific this weekend. The good news is that we don't expect any
weather related travel issues on Wednesday, but the holiday weekend
could end up with a major storm system impacting the eastern half of
the nation. Stay tuned.

EXTREMES: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was Chandalar
Lake, Alaska with 42 below zero; the hottest place during the
afternoon was Riverside, California with 93.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: A late season outbreak of tornadoes kills 77
people in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. A group of students and
a teacher trying to escape an approaching tornado in Arkansas were
injured when the twister overtook them. It had missed the school
building entirely.

...Coldest For The Season...

ANOTHER COLD FRONT LATER TOMORROW: It was plenty cold across Alabama
this morning and, for most communities, it was the lowest temperatures
we have experienced so far this season. Again today we have a long
list of the low temperatures on the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog. Here is a
condensed list of some of the colder temperatures:

14 Grantley in NE Alabama
15 Broomtown, also in NE Alabama
16 Cedar Bluff
17 Scrougout, Muscadine
18 Cottondale, Belle Mina
19 Hanceville, McCalla, Sycamore, Decatur, Crossville
20 Sylacauga, Talladega, Centreville, Millport
21 Moulton, Lafayette, Marion, Ft. Payne, Scottsboro

In the larger cities, it was 24 in Huntsville, 25 in Birmingham, 22 in
Montgomery, 23 in Tuscaloosa, 21 in Anniston and 29 in Mobile.

The high-pressure system was centered directly over Alabama early this
morning and, with calm winds, the temperature could not help but drop.
That high is being depressed to the SE this afternoon, so a SW wind
will set in before daybreak only to shift to the NW again later
tomorrow. That will bring a fresh supply of colder dry air to the
state. We are calling for an average low of 28 across Central Alabama
for Friday morning and 24 for Saturday morning. On Saturday morning,
some of the colder valleys may reach the upper teens. Looks like some
milder weather on Sunday with highs near 60. We should have dry
weather and mostly clear all the way through the weekend.

FIRE DANGER: The NWS continued a Red Flag Warning this afternoon for
numerous counties. This is because the dew point is so low and the
woodlands are dry. We do not see any bona fide chances of rain for the
next 4 or 5 days at least.

YOU COULD SEE FOREVER: Well, that is a slight exaggeration, but the
visibility was so good across Alabama today that with my little out-of-
control imagination, I felt
like I could see Canada. This was truly a day for DeSoto or Cheaha
State Park, but too busy, busy, busy.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A big high-pressure system is growing stronger over
Alaska and NW Canada. We will keep watching for cold air outbreaks
from that region of the world. The low this morning at Mayo in the
Yukon was 26 below. It was 35 below at Chandalar Lake in Eastern
Alaska. Down here in the lower 48 states, the coldest was one above at
Saranac Lake in Upstate New York. We have an e-mail subscriber there
who said that she dreaded scraping the snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I wish you could have seen Little Miss
Molly when her Mommy (the majority owner) came home from the hospital
this morning. The little girl was so excited she was shaking all over.
Even the hair on her tail was vibrating. They had a big love session
and Little Miss Molly has come into my office several additional times
to see her Mommy. She will be real happy now and we will too as things
return to normal. It looks like the real cold temperatures last night
did a body blow to autumn color, but life goes on.

...Temperatures Remain Below Average...

COOL DAYS; COLD NIGHTS: A persistent northwest flow aloft will keep
temperatures across Alabama below average for the next five days.
Following a hard freeze this morning, we expect a high today in the
mid 50s with a sunny sky. Tonight won't be as cold, but we will be
close to freezing by early tomorrow morning with most places seeing a
low between 28 and 34.

Yet another shot of cold, dry air blows into Alabama tomorrow night
and Friday; the high Friday will drop into the upper 40s, and we are
expecting lows in the 20s early Saturday morning. The weekend will
remain dry with highs mostly in the 50s.

LONG RANGE: Medium range computer model guidance suggests we will be a
little warmer next week as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday. We
have seen decent evidence that a good rain or thunderstorm event
should be shaping up toward the end of next week, but there isn't much
skill in trying to be too specific beyond seven days. We will be able
to bring you a reliable Thanksgiving week forecast on our Friday
forecast packages.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was
Riverside, California with 93 degrees. Coldest was Bettles, Alaska
with 22 below zero. In the lower 48, the coldest spot was Upson,
Wisconsin with 2 degrees above zero. While much of the eastern U.S.
was in unusually cold air, mild weather was the story out west under
an upper ridge. The high Denver was a balmy 78. Great Falls, Montana
reported a high of 67, but by Friday they won't get out of the 30s as
cold air drops south from Canada. Rain was rather hard to find
yesterday, but lake effect snows continued around the Great Lakes.
Yesterday's high in Northway, Alaska was 5 degrees below zero, which
followed a low of 21 below.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: "Mr. Tornado," famed tornado researcher Theodore
Fujita passed away after a long illness on this date. Fujita was 78.
He developed the famous Fujita scale which is used to classify the
damage caused by tornadoes. Fujita also discovered microbursts -
sudden, severe downdrafts that can result in 150 mph winds on or near
the ground - after studying the starburst patterns of trees uprooted
by tornadoes. He blamed microbursts for the 1975 Eastern Airlines
Flight 66 crash at New York's Kennedy Airport. The discovery,
controversial for years before it became accepted among
meteorologists, led to installation of Doppler radar at airports to
improve safety. Dr. Fujita worked with our own J.B. Elliott when
studying the April 4, 1977 F5 Birmingham tornado.

DID YOU KNOW? Cherrapunji, India got 366 inches of rain in only one
month, July, 1861. If there had been no runoff, that is more than 30
feet of water, deeper than lots of lakes or rivers.

...Dry Weather Through The Weekend...

OUR COLDEST NIGHT SO FAR TONIGHT: Cold air continued to pour into
Alabama this afternoon. It appears that temperatures will remain in
the forties over the extreme North with north wind gusting between 20–
25 mph. Early this afternoon, it was only 39 at Redstone Arsenal in
Huntsville.

The dew point was between 12 and 20 degrees. On a clear still night
that is a general guide as to how low the temperature will be. We do
not foresee any 12 degree lows but the old thermometer by daybreak
should be in the mid 20's over a large part of North and Central
Alabama. In the colder valleys, in North and Northeast Alabama, we may
see some lows around 18-20 early tomorrow morning. A high pressure
system should be centered over Alabama by daybreak so that means the
wind should be mostly calm.

A southwest wind will set in tomorrow afternoon permitting
temperatures to climb well into the 50's. Under our current weather
pattern, we are having a series of cold fronts sweeping southeast
quickly from Canada and the Midwest. Our next one will arrive early
Thursday and still another one Monday. These fronts are not having
enough time to gather enough moisture to produce any showers so our
weather will stay dry.

GLOBAL ROAMING: It is unusually cold for this early over many areas of
North America and even over the North Pole into Siberia. The
temperature was around 53 below zero at Ojmjakon, Siberia. That city
bills itself as the coldest continually inhabited place in the world.
Of course Antarctica is colder but people for the most part, do not
live there. Cold temperatures in the USA this morning included 3 above
at Grand Marias, Minnesota, and 20 below zero at Buckland, Alaska.

For Southern California, there is some good news on the wildfire
story. The Santa Ana winds were not nearly as strong today. That has
been a major tragedy with around one thousand very expensive homes
burned.

In Blue Ridge country, two to four inches of fresh snow around Boone
in North Carolina with a wind chill as low as 7 above. The high this
afternoon was expected to be only 24. Atop Mt. LaConte, in the Great
Smoky Mountain National Park, some fresh snow overnight brought the
total on the ground back up to seven inches, with a low temperature of
2 above zero. Lake effect snow has produced 24 inches at
Constableville at the East end of Lake Ontario in New York.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The majority owner will be released from
the hospital tomorrow morning and I am anxious to see Little Miss
Molly's welcome when she gets home. Again last night, Molly walked the
floor with an anxious look on her face wondering where her mommy was.
She went into the master bedroom four or five times to see if she was
in there. She finally hinted that she wanted me to go to bed with her
around 11:30pm. This time she immediately curled up and went to sleep
and slept all night. Sure will be nice to get things back to normal.
Life goes on. And with Little Miss Molly, she wants no disruptions.

...Fresh Supply of Cold Air Arrives...

A FRESH CHILL: A cold front passed through Alabama last night in dry
fashion; in the wake of that boundary a fresh supply of cold, dry
Polar air blows into the state today. Despite a sunny sky, most North
Alabama locations will fail to reach the 50 degree mark, and strong
north winds will make it feel colder. Then tonight, with a clear sky
and light wind, we are expecting the coldest night so far this season.
By daybreak tomorrow, just about every Alabama community will be
somewhere below the freezing mark. We figure the range will be from 18
in the coldest valleys, to 35 on the ridgetops. Most places will wind
up somewhere between 25 and 29 degrees.
The weather will stay dry tomorrow and Thursday with a slow warming
trend, but then on Friday another shot of cool dry air arrives, which
will knock about 5 to 10 degrees off afternoon highs once again.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A disturbance aloft will pass over Alabama on
Saturday, but with a very dry airmass in the lower 10,000 feet of the
atmosphere, we expect no rain and just a few scattered clouds. Looks
like afternoon highs over the weekend will be in the mid to upper 50s,
with early morning lows very close to freezing. The dry weather will
last into early next week.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was
Riverside, CA with 96 degrees. Coldest place was Arctic Village,
Alaska with 29 degrees below zero. Down here in the lower 48, the cold
place was Hallock, Minnesota with 12. Lake effect snow was a big story
yesterday; some spots in the lake effect snow bands around the Great
Lakes reported up to one foot of snow on the ground as of last night.

THANKS: We had a great crowd again this for our annual Skywatcher
training event called Storm Alert Xtreme… a special thanks to Brian
Peters for his hard work in putting the program together. We have many
new Skywatchers, and that will make the Alabama warning process more
effective! We now have about 450 active Skywatchers on our roster; I
am hoping we can double that number within the next year. We
especially need Skywatchers in rural Alabama counties where there are
no hourly reports, and very few good reports during times of severe
weather and winter storms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Strong thunderstorms developed during the mid
morning hours and produced severe weather across eastern Texas and the
Lower Mississippi Valley into the wee hours of the night.
Thunderstorms spawned twenty-one tornadoes, including thirteen in
Mississippi. One tornado killed two persons and injured eleven others
at Nettleton MS, and another tornado injured eight persons at
Tuscaloosa around midnight that night. The Tuscaloosa tornado was
rated an F3; fifteen homes were destroyed, 25 sustained light to
moderate damage, and 50 were slightly damaged. Over $1.2 million in
damage occurred.

...Dry All Week...

TWO MORE COLD FRONTS THIS WEEK: We keep getting a fresh surge of
colder air from the Northwest. There was a big frost this morning.
Another cold front will come through tonight and still another one by
Thursday.

This means a dry week with little or no chance of rain for the next
five days. There will not be enough moist air even along the front to
set off any showers.
All of this fresh cool air is coming straight out of Canada and the
upper Midwest. If that pattern were to continue well into the winter,
we could see some bitter cold temperatures.

It was cold all across Alabama this morning. Several of our 33/40
Skywatchers reports some unusually heavy frost. In fact, our observer
at Scrougeout in NE Etowah County classified it as a monster frost. We
have a long list of morning low temperatures posted on the weather
blog. Here is a shorter list:

24 Cottondale, Broomtown
26 Cedar Bluff, Scrougeout
27 Sycamore, Munford, Remlap
28 Anniston, Coker, Concord/Hueytown
29 Vinemont, Alabaster/Navajo Pines
30 Gadsden, Ft. Payne
32 Birmingham, Haleyville, Fairhope

GLOBAL ROAMING: Sure would not be a good day to be up over Northern
Canada due to an intense low pressure area. At both Resolution Island
and Brevoorte Island, it was sixteen degrees with snow and blowing
snow and wind gusts to 63 mph. Lake effect snow has left two feet of
new snow across south Lewis County in Western New York and 7-11 inches
along the south shore of Lake Superior. This morning in the Great
Smoky Mountain National Park, there was still 7 inches of snow on the
ground at Mt. LeConte and a low of 14 degrees. Much colder air will
over spread the Northeast, in fact, some of the coldest of the season.
By Wednesday morning it should be near 13 degrees at Saranac, New York
and by Thursday morning, 5-10 above zero. The lowest report in the
lower 48 this morning, was 12 at Grand Marais, Minnesota. Coldest in
Alaska was 29 below zero at Artic Village. It was 96 Sunday afternoon
at Santa Ana, California. That is in the heart of the latest wildfire
tragedy, described by some officials as the worst ever in Southern
California. They may get some temporary relief sometime tomorrow with
winds not so strong and an increase in humidity.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With the majority owner being in the
hospital the last two nights, it has totally disrupted Little Miss
Molly's routine. When I take her to the king size bed with me, she
refuses to stay. She just stands there looking at the door waiting for
her mommy to come to bed. She has made an unusual number of trips to
the front door window to see if she is coming home. She finally goes
to sleep on the king size bed with me but she will not cuddle with me
like she does with the majority owner. Life goes on. And for Little
Miss Molly, it is much happier when she can account for everyone.

...Mainly Dry...

It appears that we will be mainly dry for the next seven days here in
Central Alabama, although there are some uncertainties as we head
toward next weekend.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: A big upper level trough covers
the eastern half of the United States this morning. This trough is
delivering a flow of cold, dry air to Alabama and the Deep South. At
the surface, high pressure is centered along the Texas and Louisiana
coast. Temperatures are in the 30s across North and Central Alabama
under clear skies.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Skies will remain mostly sunny today. Temperatures
will climb into the upper 50s. A shortwave passing through the trough
will send a dry front through the state tonight. There may be a few
clouds, but no rain. The front will deliver a reinforcing shot of
cold air. Highs tomorrow may not get out of the 40s despite near
total sunshine. Tuesday night lows will be well down in the 20s as we
experience the coldest air so far this season. Wednesday through
Friday should be sunny with moderating temperatures as the upper flow
becomes more zonal. By late Friday, the flow will buckle again and
turn to northwesterly as another trough forms over the East. This
will send another cold front our way by Saturday morning. For now, it
looks like the weekend will be dry and cool, but the GFS thinks the
front could be on the wet side. So the weekend forecast is on the
uncertain side for now.

HOLIDAY WEEK: The GFS model has been flip-flopping back and forth
about the possibility of a big storm system around Thanksgiving.
There is a lot of uncertainty about this also.

SKY NOTES: Those two bright objects in the southwest sky each night
are Venus and Jupiter. The two planets appear to be slowly converging
and they will have an amazing conjunction with the moon late in the
month. Also, November 17th and 18th mark the peak of the Leonid
Meteor Shower. Best time will be predawn this morning and again
tomorrow morning.

DROUGHT UPDATE: The drought is worsening a bit across the
northeastern quarter of Alabama. Drought conditions now exist from
Bibb and Chilton Counties up through Jefferson, St. Clair and Calhoun
Counties on to Jackson, DeKalb and Cherokee Counties. Level2, or
severe drought conditions still are holding through the eastern sliver
of the counties from Cleburne up through Jackson counties along the
Georgia border. 73% of the state is still abnormally dry or worse.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Hurricane Lenny became the first hurricane
ever to strike the islands of the Lesser Antilles from the west.
Hurricane Lenny was packing winds of 155 mph as it moved just south of
the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. That is just 5 mph
short of category five intensity. A 15-ft. storm surge battered the
island washing away homes, boats and roads. Lenny's winds were still
125 mph as it moved near the islands of Anguilla and St. Maarten on
the 18th. The storm was dubbed "left-handed Lenny" because of its
unusual motion.

...Sunny Sunday...

Clouds were slow to clear over the Tennessee Valley and parts of
Central Alabama early this morning. Lows were in the 30s. But skies
are now sunny across the area. Temperatures are going to top out
right around 50 degrees this afternoon. Our forecast will be rather
benign for the remainder of the week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature sunshine and a bit of a warmup,
with highs around 60-62. A front will arrive late Monday night, and
Tuesday will be slightly cooler with a breezy north wind. Wednesday
morning will be the coldest of the period, with widespread lows in the
20s. Another fresh supply of cooler air arrives during the day on
Thursday. This will set the stage for another chilly morning on
Friday, when lows will be in the 20s again.

NEXT WEEKEND: It looks like we will have a significant pattern
change by next weekend. The northwesterly flow aloft will quickly
shift around to southwesterly and at the surface, winds will shift
around to southerly. The result will be an increase in moisture. The
subtropical high will remain strong, however, in a position east of
the Carolinas. This will keep the weather battleground to our north
through the weekend. There is low confidence in the weekend forecast
because the models have been flip-flopping back and forth.

SNEAK PEEK HOLIDAY WEEK: Thanksgiving week looks like it will start
off with the frontal boundary to our north sinking into our area.
This means an increased chance of showers in the Tuesday time frame.
A strong surface low has been a mainstay of the models for a few runs,
and this low will move a warm front back north in before a good round
of rain and storms. It could happen in the Wednesday/Thursday area,
giving us a wet and stormy Turkey Day.

NATIONAL NOTES: Things are quiet nationally this morning. The Santa
Ana winds have relaxed over Southern California, reducing the fire
threat there. The lake effect snow belts of the Great Lakes are
expected to light up today as cold air moves over the relatively warm
waters of the lakes. Over the next ten days, two waves of cold air
will overspread the eastern half of the country, keeping temperatures
below normal for much of the period. Drought continues to plague
the West, South Texas, a small part of Wisconsin and the area from
Georgia through western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, eastern
Kentucky and into Virginia.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Hurricane warnings were in effect as late-
season Hurricane Lenny was threatening Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands. Lenny was a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph.
Lenny was not only unusual because of its late-season strength, but
because of its forward movement. Lenny was moving from west to east
across the Caribbean. Lenny was the first hurricane in recorded
history to threaten Puerto Rico from the west, as most storms move
east to west across the Caribbean. The unusual motion meant that some
harbors normally protected from hurricanes were threatened. Lenny
would go on to become a strong category four hurricane with top winds
of 155 mph, making it the strongest November hurricane ever.
