...Showers and Storms..

Many thanks to J.B. for filling in for me last night on the morning
package since I had a company Christmas Party to attend.

STORMY SATURDAY: On the weather maps early this afternoon, we ahave
a strengthening low pressure system over northern Losiiana heading
toward northern Mississippi. A warm front extends east of this low,
snaking across Central Mississippi into Southwest Alabama and the
Florida Panhandle. This low will move northeast and deepen, spreading
rain and storms across the South. To the north, heavy rain is
possible from northwestern Tennessee through much of Kentucky into
southern Ohio and West Virginia. Further north, a wintry mix will
fall. Over Louisiana and southern Mississippi, severe weather will be
possible. Tonight, that severe weather shift to the southern Atlantic
coast from northern Florida and southern Georgia into the coastal
areas of the Carolinas as a secondary low forms. There could be a few
tornadoes in these two regions.

OVER ALABAMA: Most areas will get around one half inch of rain from
this system as it passes through Alabama this afternoon and evening.
There could be some thunder, but strong storms are not anticipated.
It will be breezy ahead of the system this afternoon, caution should
be exercised if you are out on area lakes. The cold front will shift
through overnight, turning our winds to the west and northwest and
ushering in some chilly air. As the low moves off to the northeast, a
little wrap around moisture will move across North Alabama. There
will be some drizzle and perhaps even a few snowflakes over northern
sections of the area during the late night hours. Any white stuff
that falls will be brief and very light, if it happens at all.

UNCOMFORTABLE SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a windy,
chilly affair with temperatures struggling to get out of the 40s and a
strong northwest wind at 20-30 mph. Clouds should begin to break up
during the day, starting in west tomorrow morning and gradually
spreading eastward. It will be a cold night tomorrow night with clear
skies and light winds. Temperatures will drop into the middle 20s in
most locations, with colder spots in the lower 20a.

LOOKING AHEAD: Dry and cool weather will prevail into
midweek. Another rain system will affect the area on Thursday,
bringing about one half of an inch on average. Look for a stronger
and wetter system for the weekend. The best chances for rain look now
like they will come Saturday night, when an inch or more may fall.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day look dry and cool here.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: KLM Flight 867, a 747 with 231
paseengers and crew on board, lost power in all four engines as it
flew through the ash plume from Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano. The
powerless aircraft lost ten thousand feet in altitude as the crew
frantically tried to restart the engines. Fortunately, their efforts
were successful, and the plane landed safely at Anchorage. Damage to
the plane amounted to $80 million. At least eighty airplanes have
been damaged by ash from volcanoes worldwide since 1980. No plane has
ever crashed as a result of volcanic ash, although it came very close
to happening in the case of the KLM incident.

...Big Changes For Alabama...

.TEMPERATURES WILL PLUNGE TONIGHT: Early this morning a low-pressure
area was already getting its act together over SE Texas. As the day
goes on, the low will become better organized as it starts moving
toward the NE. This is going to be a big newsmaker for many areas,
including some areas that do not need any more big weather news. The
track of the low should be up across Louisiana and Mississippi today,
passing across NW Alabama and Middle Tennessee early tonight. By
tomorrow, it will be battering New England. A warm front will be
moving north from the Gulf of Mexico leading a big upsurge of
moisture. Showers were already breaking out early this morning in
Arkansas and Louisiana. They will spread across Alabama as the day
goes on.
We believe the best chance for rain for Central Alabama will be this
afternoon and tonight. There could also be a few thunderstorms
involved. Behind the low, cold air will spill southeastward and the
change to colder should start in Central Alabama between nightfall and
midnight tonight. This whole area is still in an

Exceptional drought area, so even a small amount of rain is very
valuable. We will be lucky to get around ½ inch of rain from this
storm, but up in North Alabama some communities, with a bit of luck,
could get over 1 inch.

There is a chance that before all of the moisture moves out there
could be a change over to a few snow flurries very early Sunday
morning. We think most of those will be over the north third of the
state, maybe a few as far south as Birmingham. No accumulation.
Sunday will be a very uncomfortable day with north winds gusting as
high as 30 mph and high temperatures will struggle to get into the
lower 40s. By Monday morning, we are sticking with our 26-degree low
for Central Alabama. A high-pressure area will be over us at the time.
Some of the colder valleys could easily chill to as low as 22. That
will represent a huge drop in temperature, since it was near 80 early
in the week.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: This is going to be a vicious storm for parts
of the Great Lakes over into the NE states. Some of the heaviest snow
will be across Upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. An
example, at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York, it was expected to be
about 7 below zero this morning and then they will get 18 to 24 inches
of new snow over the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC Championship Game is at 1:00 this
afternoon at Legion Field in Birmingham. It will be televised on ESPN
Classic. Jackson State will be playing Grambling State. The
temperature at kick off should be around 66 and remaining in the 60s
for the whole game. Brisk south winds 10 to 20 mph. There is a chance
of showers, even at kick off, but showers will be increasing later in
the game.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am so far behind on so many different
things that I do not know east from west or north from south. For sure
I am going to reserve some time today for my little 9-pound stick-
tight pal known as Little Miss Molly. She has followed me like a
shadow the last two or three days, because I have not played a single
ballgame with her nor have I had a tug-of-war with her newfound
pleasure which is a pair of my old socks. Life goes on. I just wish it
would slow down a bit, but not much chance.

MUCH COLDER LATE IN WEEKEND: A very subtle and unnoticed thing
happened Wednesday when we obtained one extra minute of daylight in
the evening. Sunset changed from 4:40 p.m. to 4:41. This is the time
of year when we generally have our shortest days and the transition is
ever so slow. More pressing at the moment is our change to colder over
the weekend preceded by some decent rain amounts Saturday and Saturday
night. It will all unfold like this: a low pressure area will form
over East Texas and move to North Louisiana by daybreak Saturday.
During the day the low will cross Alabama and then speed up the east
coast. This is going to give much of Alabama a rain event. Model
guidance, that tries to estimate the amount of rain, shows about ½
inch across Central Alabama. We believe that some parts of North and
NW Alabama may receive over 1 inch of rain. The rain will taper off
Saturday night as colder air sweeps in from the NW. There is still a
chance that the diminishing rain could change over to some snow
flurries Sunday morning before ending over about the north half of the
state. The ground is quite warm. We do not foresee any accumulation
across Central Alabama. At the most, a few of the ridges in NE Alabama
could get a light dusting. It will be clearing late in the day Sunday
and temperatures will struggle to get above 40 over the north. Winds
will gust as high as 30 mph, so the change will be very noticeable.

There will be a major temperature swing from 80 early in the week to
26 by Monday morning. According to my fourth grade arithmetic, that is
a 54-degree change.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC Championship Game between Grambling State
and Jackson State will be played Saturday afternoon at Legion Field in
Birmingham and televised by ESPN Classic. For the 1:00 p.m. kick off,
the temperature should be near 66 with south winds 10-20. there may be
a slight chance of a shower at kick off, but a better chance of
showers by late in the game.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Winter Weather Advisories of some type are
posted all the way from NE New Mexico to Maine. Some of the heaviest
snow will be over New England where Boston could get an additional
foot over the weekend after already getting 1 foot. As much as 3
inches of snow may fall along the Kansas/Oklahoma border, but no
serious additional freezing rain is expected in that area. Cold
temperatures this morning 23 below zero at Agassiz, Minnesota and 35
below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Tina Nibblett from Gardendale gave me
permission to tell about her and her daughter, Robin, having to go
through a very sad event losing their 11-year-old Shih-Tzu named
Scooby November 14. The puppy died in Robin's arms. She was real
healthy and playful until she was 10. Health problems developed and
eventually her kidneys failed. Their vet worked for over a year to
make her well. She would go on out-of-town vacations with the family.
Tina said that she has not cried that much since her mother died. They
buried Scooby next to their front porch. Robin bought a plaque and put
it on her grave because we wanted to honor her. They received
condolences from a lot of friends. Robin used to ask for prayer for
Scooby at church when she was sick. After Scooby died, their minister
sent them a sympathy and so did their vet. I wanted to tell this story
today to encourage people to spend as much time as they can with their
pets because there is no creature on earth as faithful.,,,,

...Rain By Tomorrow Afternoon...

ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN: Our weather will remain very changeable
through the weekend with an active weather pattern continuing across
the continental U.S. Today, Alabama will be in-between weather
systems, so the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky and a high
close to 60 degrees in most locations. To the west, another major
storm system will begin to get its act together, and snow will
increase over parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, the same area hit so hard
by the big ice storm earlier this week.

THE WEEKEND: The storm system to the west will bring clouds back into
Alabama tonight, and rain will spread into the state from the west
during the mid to late afternoon hours tomorrow. The latest projected
track of the main surface low is from near Shreveport to Nashville,
and onto Boston by Sunday evening. On this track, some warmer air will
try to spread northward into Central Alabama tomorrow, and we have
bumped up highs a bit assuming we get into the warm sector (we are now
forecasting a high of 65 tomorrow. Some thunder is possible, but
severe weather is not expected due to limited instability values.
Rainfall amounts should average around one-half inch, and the best
potential for rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

SNOW FLAKES? As the surface low pulls off to the northeast, much
colder air will roll into Alabama late tomorrow night, and we expect
the rain to change to snow flurries across North Alabama generally in
the 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. time frame. The best chance of snow will
come across the high terrain locations of Northeast Alabama,
especially atop Lookout Mountain. But, even there, accumulation is not
likely due to the warm ground temperatures. The snow flakes will be
mainly a
novelty, especially considering the fact that temperatures here were
close to 80 degrees earlier this week.

The snow flurries will end Sunday morning, and the sky will clear with
sunshine in full force by afternoon. Still, the day will be blustery
and cold with a high only in the low to mid 40s along with a stiff
north wind that will gust to 30 mph at times. Then, Sunday night, with
a clear sky and a diminishing wind, temperatures will drop quickly,
and we expect a low in the mid 20s by daybreak Monday. Some of the
colder valleys will be close to 20 degrees. Then, the first few days
of next week will be cool and dry.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Boston mayor Thomas Menino declared a snow
emergency yesterday; parts of Boston had one foot of snow on the
ground as of last night. And, the snow fun is just beginning; the
weekend storm system is expected to bring heavy snow to the general
area from St. Louis to New England. Blizzard conditions are likely
across much of the Northeast U.S. by Sunday thanks to a very deep
surface low near Boston. Here in Alabama, Birmingham's official rain
total yesterday was only 0.11". Almost all of the rain reports
statewide were under a quarter of an inch.

===================================================================

A TEMPERATURE PLUNGE OVER 50 DEGREES: How about that? We are
forecasting a low of 26 by Monday morning. Remember, as recently as
earlier this week, temperatures across Central Alabama were topping
out around the 80-degree mark. The temperature will start a downward
trend tonight, but the real cold air will not arrive until late
Saturday night and through the day Sunday. There may still be a few
light showers around the area through this evening, but Friday should
be dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Another storm system will develop
over Texas Friday and it will pull a warm front north from the Gulf of
Mexico. By Sunday, the deep low-pressure area will be over
Pennsylvania. Much colder air will overspread Alabama late Saturday
night and Sunday. Many sections of the state should get about ½ inch
of rain Saturday, but further north in the Tennessee Valley there may
be more.

THE SNOW FLURRY QUESTION: We do not see any need to buy milk, Pop
Tarts, or anything else. As the precipitation tapers off late Saturday
night and early Sunday morning, it could change over to a few
flurries. The ground is very warm, so it should not cause any
problems. Again, we have to weigh evidence from more than one weather
model. One of our main weather models shows no flurries at all and the
other one indicates flurries as far south as about Centreville.

Sunday is going to be a rather raw day with north winds gusting as
high as 30 mph and, after an early morning low in the upper 20s, highs
will only reach the 40s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Due to that storm system that we discussed
above, there may be a big snow event in parts of New York State and
Pennsylvania, mainly across Southern New York State where over 10
inches of snow may fall in some areas. This same storm is also going
to produce some snow in the Central Plains, but it does not appear to
be a major snowstorm, but even 1 or 2 inches will be major to those
places covered by ice. The high in Oklahoma City tomorrow is expected
to be 42 before the snow event. Warmest in the USA yesterday was 87 at
Harlingen, Texas. Coldest in the lower 48 states this morning was 13
below at Saranac Lake, New York. They, too, may get as much as half a
foot of snow over the next several days. Coldest in Alaska was 24
below at Arctic Village. If you really want to shiver, the temperature
today was hovering at 63 below zero at Ojmjakon in Eastern Russia. The
snow survey today shows that 51.2% of the lower 48 states has a snow
cover.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our granddaughter got home from Troy
University this afternoon for the Christmas holidays, so Little Miss
Molly will get a lot of loving from still another person. We will have
a houseful of humans through the holidays and for the foreseeable
future. Little Miss Molly will play with everyone until she is
exhausted. I will also try to see that she gets some long daytime
naps. At the vet yesterday, her blood work turned out to be excellent.
I sure hope Molly lives as long as I do and we both want to live 25
more years. Life goes on and it seems to get more interesting every
single day.....

...A Few Showers Today...

DECEMBER HEAT WAVE WINDING DOWN: A cold front will move through
Alabama today, ending the record breaking December heat wave we have
enjoyed during the past three days. The front will bring a few
showers, but with weakening dynamics, rainfall amounts should be
rather light and spotty, with most places getting one-quarter of an
inch or less. The high today will be in the mid to upper 60s, about
ten degrees cooler than recent days this week. The air will be even
colder tonight and tomorrow as temperatures get back to where they
should be for this time of the year. Tomorrow will be rain-free as
Alabama will be in-between storm systems.

WEEKEND STORM: A deepening surface low is expected to move from a
point near Shreveport late tomorrow night, to Knoxville, Tennessee by
Saturday night, and to Boston on Sunday. This track will bring a
threat of heavy snow to places like St. Louis, Indianapolis, Columbus
(OH), Pittsburgh, and much of interior New England. Down this way,
showers and possibly a thunderstorms are likely by Saturday afternoon.
There might even be some strong storms down over South Alabama, where
the air will be more unstable. At this time it looks like we will have
a decent potential for one-half inch of rain over the northern half of
the state.
Late Saturday night, as the surface low pulls away to the northeast,
and colder air is pushed southward into Alabama, we have the chance of
a few snow flurries across the northern part of the state, mainly over
Northeast Alabama. The chance of snow flurries will continue into
early Sunday morning, but don't look for any accumulation due to the
warm ground, and the fact that the deeper moisture will be pulling
away as the colder air rushes into the state.
Sunday promises to be a cold and blustery day, with a high only in the
low 40s and a brisk north wind. We will begin the day Sunday in the
upper 20s, and Monday morning should be a few degrees colder with a
clear sky and a light wind. The first half of next week looks cool and
dry at this point with temperatures near normal for mid-December.

MORE WINTER WEATHER WOES: A winter storm watch is up for much of
western and northern Oklahoma for the new system that will bring rain
to Alabama on Saturday. Power outages remain widespread across
Oklahoma, but this time most all of the precipitation will be in the
form of snow since the cold air will be deeper. More than 500,000
people across the Central Plains are still without power as of last
night due to the severe ice storm which rolled through the region
earlier this week.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Tropical Depression Olga degenerated into a
broad area of low pressure last night; it will continue to dissipate
today as it moves over Jamaica. Warmest place in the nation yesterday
was Harlingen, Texas with 87 degrees. The warmest place in Alabama was
Dothan with 80; Birmingham's official high was 73, five degrees short
of the record for December 12.

===================================================================

BELOW FREEZING BY SUNDAY MORNING: We all knew this spring in December
weather could not last forever. That is the nature of the weather
beast in Alabama from November at least through March. There are
always some big changes lurking just around the corner.

We did not set a bunch of new record highs this afternoon due to a
persistent cloud cover. In fact, by midday some showers had moved into
the extreme north and NW part of the state giving some communities
about ¼ inch of rain. At mid afternoon, those showers were still
remaining close to the Tennessee border.

There will be some showers around the area tonight. We look for a good
chance of showers Thursday as a cold front pushes toward the state.
The front may already be in NW Alabama early tomorrow morning and
moving across Central Alabama by midday. This will bring us a good
chance of showers Thursday and then turning colder Thursday night. By
Friday, the weather will start to change again. A low pressure system
is expected to move northward to near Memphis Saturday morning and all
the way to New England by Sunday morning. So, we will have occasional
showers and even some thunderstorms on Saturday and then change to
much colder Saturday night. There may be some leftover light
precipitation Sunday morning which could spawn a few snow flurries
over about the north third of the state for a time very late Saturday
night and Sunday morning. They should be insignificant. We think that
the better chance of those will be closer to the Tennessee River,
especially over extreme NE Alabama. By Monday morning, a high pressure
area will be over Texas to Alabama with temperatures again down in the
20s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Olga has been downgraded to a
tropical depression. She will move west and then NW across the
Caribbean staying south of Cuba. It is interesting that the center is
expected to be over the extreme Southern Gulf of Mexico off the NE tip
of the Yucatan Peninsula by midday Saturday. She is way out of season.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Reports say now 27 people have died in the vast
skating rink of the middle USA. The ice storm has been rated as the
worst in history for some areas. Especially hard hit have been states
like Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. It was estimated today that one
million homes and businesses were without power. It will take days and
days to restore that. The clean up for millions of downed trees and
limbs will be enormous. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 19
below zero at Big Piney, Wyoming and in Alaska, the cold spot was
Arctic Village with 8 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: James Spann has a saying that when it
comes to thunderstorms, expect the unexpected. I say that too about
Little Miss Molly. This was her PBS day (Puppy Beauty Shop). She
smelled so good when she got home. One of the neighbors dogs, normally
restrained by an electric collar, had gotten loose. She is a beautiful
yellow lab. We knew the dog and took her in until her owner got home.
Her owner came by to get her at the same time as Little Miss Molly got
home. The big dog came strolling through our living area on the way
out through the garage just as Little Miss Molly came in through the
garage. You should have seen the commotion. My little pal almost had
another cardiac arrest. Life goes on.....

...Big Change To Colder Weather Friday...

LOTS OF BIG CHANGES AHEAD: Get ready for a wild ride on the Alabama
weather roller coaster through the weekend. First off, a look back at
the record warmth across Alabama yesterday. Birmingham established a
new daily record high for the second day in a row; yesterday's
official high was 78 degrees, beating the old record of 76 in 1931.
Warmest spot in the state was Montgomery with 82 degrees. Other highs
included 78 in Weaver and Gadsden, 77 in Ashville, 76 in Trussville
and Hayden, and 75 in Hamilton and Jasper. Our average high for
December 11 and 12 is 57 degrees, so many spots were 20 degrees above
normal yesterday.
ANOTHER WARM ONE: Not much change in our weather today; this will be
the last day of this December heat wave; most communities will see a
high today between 75 and 79 degrees with a partly sunny sky after
some early morning fog.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: The big storm that has been parked over the
Southwest U.S. over the last four days will finally weaken and lift
out today. That will be dragging a cold front down into Alabama
tomorrow night, and in advance of the surface boundary we expect a
good chance of showers tomorrow afternoon and evening. Doesn't exactly
look like a robust weather event; rain totals of a quarter-inch or
less are about the best we can do.

A CHILLY WIND RETURNS: Much colder air moves into Alabama on Friday;
we expect a high only in the low 50s over the northern half of the
state. We will be dry on Friday, but a surface low is expected to spin
up by Friday night somewhere near New Orleans, and this wave will
impact Alabama in a big way over the weekend.
We will forecast periods of rain across the northern half of Alabama
on Saturday as the surface low moves from near Biloxi to Atlanta
during the day.For now, it looks like the warm sector and the
associated unstable air will remain over the southern half of the
state, where some strong thunderstorms could be involved. Up on our
end of the state, we figure rain totals on Saturday will average
somewhere between one-half and three-quarters of an inch. Assuming the
warm sector remains over South Alabama, we will probably have a real
hard time getting out of the 40s on Saturday as the rain falls.

SNOW FLAKES? As the low pulls away to the northeast Saturday night,
colder air will drop into Alabama, and there is some chance the rain
could change to light snow before ending. The chance of accumulating
snow for North Alabama looks rather small since the system will be
moving quickly, and the ground is still pretty warm. The best chance
of an inch or two is atop Lookout Mountain up in Northeast Alabama.
Much colder air follows the storm on Sunday, and most communities will
have a hard time getting out of the 30s. We will be below freezing
both Sunday and Monday morning.

A COLDER WEEKEND: If weather was a smorgasbord, there is more than
enough to satisfy any weather fan over the next few days. This
includes another unseasonably warm day again tomorrow with possible
record highs. Showers will arrive on Thursday and knock the
temperature down a bit. By Friday, cooler air will have overspread the
area then, the main weather feature. A low-pressure system will
develop and move NE through East Alabama on Saturday and all the way
through Philadelphia by Sunday. This will allow colder air to spill
into Alabama behind the low. Our best chance of rain will come on
Saturday because of that and we could get as much as ½ to ¾ of an inch
if we are lucky.

SNOW QUESTIONS ARE FLYING: We do not see any significant snow event
for Alabama, especially here in the central part of the state. As the
rain tapers off Saturday night and early Sunday morning, there is the
possibility of a brief change over to light snow or flurries. By that
time, most of the moisture will be out of here. Probably the better
chance of that happening will be over the higher terrain of NE
Alabama. A big note of caution: this is only Tuesday and we are
speaking of late Saturday and early Sunday morning, so a lot can
change. We will watch it closely. This system will pull much colder
air into the state late in the weekend. Look for low temperatures in
the mid 20s both Sunday and Monday morning with a high on Sunday only
in the mid 40s. A number of Alabama locations recorded record highs
again yesterday. Just a few samples included 80 in Livingston and
Helena, 81 in Evergreen, Robertsdale and Florala and 82 in Montgomery.

MIDDLE USA SKATING RINK: The Daily Oklahoman, a legendary newspaper
in that state, reports that hundreds of thousands of people in
Oklahoma remain without power as the storm continues. Officials add
that this is the worst overall power outage in Oklahoma history. At
least 15 people have died in the state, mostly from traffic accidents.

Oklahoma is just a part of the story. Conditions were just as bad in
Kansas, Missouri and other parts of the Midwest. The main threat was
spreading NE today all the way into Northern Illinois and Lower
Michigan. The coldest temperature in the lower 48 this morning was 12
below zero at Stanley, Idaho and in Yellowstone National Park. Coldest
in Alaska was 8 below at Arctic Village. I am sure you would love to
be at Barter Island just off the arctic coast of Alaska, where it was
15 degrees with east winds gusting to 48 mph and a wind chill below
zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have about decided that I might wrap up
a bunch of old socks in Christmas paper and let my little 9-pound pal,
Little Miss Molly, tear into it on Christmas morning. Those two old
socks that she stole a few days ago have become her favorite thing to
play with. On several occasions I have looked behind me and she would
be following me with a sock hanging from her mouth wanting to do a tug-
of-war. Each day the rest of this week I will mention some other
people who love their dogs just as much as I and some of the funny
things they do. Life goes on.

...December Heat Wave Continues Today...

A RARE DECEMBER DAY: For statistics buffs, here is something pretty
interesting. Yesterday's high in Birmingham was 79 degrees, and that
puts us in rare territory. The old record for December 10 was broken
by plenty (73 set in 1972). But looking back at high temperatures for
every day in the month of December since 1895 (over 3,400 days), there
have only been 9 days on which the temperature reached 79 or warmer,
for a probability of 0.25%. Bottom line… it doesn't get this warm in
December very often around here.

Other record highs across Alabama yesterday included 82 in Montgomery,
81 in Pinson, 80 in Tuscaloosa, 79 in Anniston, 77 in Muscle Shoals,
and 76 in Huntsville. Highs reported by our SKYCAM network and team of
Skywatchers included 82 in Demopolis, 81 in Cuba (Sumter County), 79
in Jemison, 77 in Trussville, and 76 in Hayden, and 75 in Gadsdsen.
The average high for this time of the year is 57, so some spots were
over 20 degrees above normal yesterday.

MORE RECORDS? The weather won't change much today and tomorrow; high
in the mid to upper 70s for most spots with a mix of sun and clouds
after morning fog. Today's record high for Birmingham is 76 set in
1931, and tomorrow's record is 78 from 1971. Both of those will be in
danger as our December heat wave rolls
along.

CRIPPLING ICE STORM NOT FAR AWAY: Much of the nation's heartland is on
ice this morning… all the way from West Texas through Oklahoma and
into Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. At the time I was writing
this, over half a million people had no power, and many airport were
struggling to remain open. Temperatures will slowly warm over this
region today, but it will take a few days for all of the ice to melt.
The leading edge of the cold air was close to the northwest corner of
Alabama, but it won't move much today since it is parallel to the
upper air winds.

NEXT RAIN: The big storm will finally lift out of the Southwest U.S.
tomorrow and weaken. It will drag a cold front into Alabama late
Thursday, and we will forecast a good chance of showers Thursday
afternoon and Thursday night. Looks like rain with that event will be
in the quarter-inch range; that won't make a scratch in the big rain
deficit we have for the year (23.79" in Birmingham as of today).

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Lots of computer model inconsistency here, but
some runs have hinted at a low forming in the Gulf of Mexico Saturday,
strengthening as it lifts northeast. If this happens to be correct,
that would suggest rain Saturday afternoon, with some potential for a
change to snow before ending Sunday night. Sure sounds far fetched
with the warm weather of late, but remember, it is brutally cold not
that far away. We will play it conservative now and watch model runs
in coming days. With this kind of pattern, the weather certainly isn't
boring!

RESERVOIRS STILL VERY THIRSTY: Who would have thought that today we
would have record warmth in parts of Alabama with a major ice storm
crippling much of the Central USA and a tropical system trying to
develop east of Puerto Rico? That is the story inI a nutshell and I
guess that is what makes weather work so interesting. By 2 o'clock
this afternoon, the temperature had reached a record 78 at Birmingham
Airport, breaking the old record of 73 in 1972. Actually, we are
closing in on a record for the entire month of December, which was 80.
That occurred on December 7, 1951. This very warm weather should
continue through midweek finally cooling off toward the end of the
week and over the weekend. By Saturday morning, our temperatures
should be more sensible in the middle 30s and a few degrees colder on
Sunday morning.

THE BIG QUESTION IS YES OR NO ON RAIN: The answer is somewhere
between. We do not see any major improvement in the drought in the
near future and possibly through much of the winter. As it turns
cooler Thursday, there is a chance of some showers, but all
indications point to only modest amounts toward the end of the week.
We will be lucky to get between ¼ and ½ inch. The ground will simply
swallow that like it is cotton candy.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is still a chance that a low-pressure area
200 miles east of Puerto Rico could develop enough to become a
tropical or subtropical cyclone. However, winds upstairs are expected
to become more unfriendly. It could still produce heavy squalls and
gusty winds near gale force across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
later today and tonight as it moves WSW about 20 mph.

THE HUGE ICE STORM: It is not only major in intensity, but it is
major because it covers such a wide area. Oklahoma and Missouri are
especially hard hit, but this storm has triggered Weather Watches or
Warnings all the way from Eastern Arizona, North and West New Mexico,
north-eastward to Northern Indiana. Every single county in Kansas is
affected. Also under the gun is the Texas Panhandle, most of Oklahoma,
the NW 2/3 of Missouri, Southern Iowa and the north half of Illinois.
There were a number of locations in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri
where the ice accumulation had reached 1 inch. That may not sound like
much, but that makes it a devastating storm tearing down trees, power
lines and making travel virtually impossible. We checked the snow
survey this morning and 54% of the lower 48 states is either covered
by snow or ice. It extends as far south as SE Oklahoma and most of
Missouri northward. 162 inches of snow was on the ground at Galina
Summit, Idaho, 70 inches at the crest of Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I try to learn something about the
weather every single day from every available source including all of
the people in our weather group. I also learn something from Little
Miss Molly every day. She teaches me that the simple things in life
are the most enjoyable. I have always agreed with that, but she drives
home the point. Sunday she found two of my socks that had been
laundered, but not put away. She went racing through the house
slinging those socks like a Frisbee. She was as happy as a child who
had just gotten a new bicycle. She has favored the socks over her big
array of balls. She has also seized my recliner all day, because most
of our extra company is out of town and Molly is finally getting her
much beloved long daytime naps. Life goes on and I continue to
learn.....

...Warm Spell Continues...

Clouds kept us from establishing a new record high for the date
yesterday in Birmingham. That stratus deck limited the afternoon high
to 67 degrees. Anniston did manage to establish a new mark for the
date, with a high of 76F. Tuscaloosa weighed in at 72F. Records will
continue to be in jeopardy through Wednesday as a warm and relatively
moist southerly flow continues.

FOR YOUR MONDAY: Skies may start off cloudy in your neck of the woods
once again today. Or there could be some patchy fog. Some drier air
should allow the clouds and fog to burn off more quickly today that
the past couple of days. More sunshine will mean warmer temperatures,
and readings today should generally make the middle to upper 70s.
But, that is what we thought yesterday and to a lesser extent on
Saturday. There will be a slight chance of a shower and perhaps a
storm with the slightly unstable airmass and a weak front positioned
just to our northwest.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: We will continue in a warm southerly flow
through Thursday with generally partly cloudy skies. Shower chances
should be minimal. And temperatures will warm well into the 70s both
days. This will be very close to….

…RECORD TERRITORY: Here are the record highs for today, Tuesday and
Wednesday across Central Alabama: Birmingham….73F, 76F and 78F.
Tuscaloosa…74F, 75F and 79F. Anniston…77F, 73F and 77F. With
projected highs in the middle and upper 70s, some records will likely
be tied or broken, if the clouds cooperate.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: The GFS model keeps pushing the passage of the
frontal system further back, with the main action now expected during
the day on Thursday. And action may be a bit too strong of a word to
describe our next system. Vigorous low pressure will develop to our
north and northwest late on Wednesday and speed northeastward. As it
does, it will push an area of showers and storms towards Alabama. But
the low will quickly run off and leave the front with little support.
The front should sink down into Central Alabama Thursday night, with
some cooler air filtering in behind it. This air will not be really
cold, just more like normal for this time of year. Meanwhile, a
strong disturbance approaching from the west will bring a return of
rain chances on Friday, and especially Friday night. In fact,
rainfall amounts Friday into early Saturday could be better than those
on Thursday. But still no drought busting rains in sight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Buffalo was buried under 38 inches of lake
effect snow to set a 24-hour record as intense lake effect snow
squalls buffet the city. Watertown NY recorded 39 inches of snow in
just 12 hours, with snow falling at the rate of 4 inches of hour for 6
straight hours. More about the event in today's Weather Blog.

More about the event in today's Weather Blog.

...Records Falling..

Rising temperatures are leading to falling records across the Deep
South on this early December weekend. In Mississippi yesterday, new
record highs were established at Greenwood with 81F and at Vicksburg
with 82F. Other records included 76F at Memphis and 81F in Monroe,
Louisiana. Alexandria, Louisiana tied their all-time December high
with a reading of 83F. Galveston, Texas tied their record for the date
with an afternoon high of 77F. In nearby Houston, the high of 83F was
a record, as well as the morning low of 72F, which beat the old warm
mark by 7 degrees! Usually, where you have temperature extremes on
one side of the country, you have the opposite on the other side. No
exception in this case. It was -26F yesterday morning at Grand Forks,
ND.

WE'RE NEXT: An area of showers and storms moved northward from
southern Mississippi and Southwest Alabama yesterday. It produced
some localized decent rainfall amounts, mainly over West Alabama.
Skies cleared during the evening in many areas and dense fog formed
over a wide area of Central Alabama. Visibilities dropped to less
than 1 mile in several locations. Dense fog advisories were required
for much of Central Alabama south of a line from Millport to Berry to
West Blocton to Montevallo to Goodwater and Wadley. Low clouds formed
in some other areas, which limited the fog formation. Temperatures
were quite mild, with lows in the lower and middle 60s in many spots.
Those values are warmer than the average highs for early December!
Many locations were already above 70 degrees at lunchtime, but clouds
were hanging tough in others. In areas which receive sunshine,
records are going to be in jeopardy this afternoon. There still is a
weak cold frontal boundary just to the northwest of Alabama. This
will provide a focus for showers and storms across western Tennessee
and northwestern
Mississippi, with lesser chances over into Northwestern Alabama. Look
for another mild tonight with more fog and low clouds forming.

THE COMING WORK WEEK: The boundary will drift down into North
Alabama tomorrow, giving a chance for a few showers and storms across
the northern half of the state. Temperatures will be very warm again
on Monday, well into the 70s again. Records will once again be in
jeopardy across Central Alabama. High pressure will build back in for
Tuesday and Wednesday and the shower chances should decrease while
temperature remain warm, near record levels. As the western trough
lifts out, a cold front will move toward Alabama Wednesday night,
accompanied by a band of showers and storms. Despite the warm
temperatures, instabilities will be limited and severe weather chances
look very limited. Cooler air will invade the area Friday and
Saturday. Look for a wave of low pressure to spread moisture over
South Alabama during the weekend, but we should stay dry.

BIG ICE STORM IN PROGRESS: Significant accumulations of freezing
rain were occurring this morning from northeastern Missouri across
Central Illinois and Indiana into northwestern Ohio. Elevated
thunderstorms are in the mix with a thin layer of cold air near the
surface. Ice storm warnings are in effect over a wide area.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: The game time temperature at Lambeau Field in
Green Bay was 11 degrees as the Packers kicked off against the
Vikings. The Pack fell behind, but Green Bay QB Bret Favre was 34-0
at Lambeau when then temperature is less than 34 degrees. He brought
the Pack back with an impressive drive to
win the ballgame 26-22, making his record an impressive 34-0 during
cold weather.
