A TEMPERATURE PLUNGE OVER 50 DEGREES: How about that? We are
forecasting a low of 26 by Monday morning. Remember, as recently as
earlier this week, temperatures across Central Alabama were topping
out around the 80-degree mark. The temperature will start a downward
trend tonight, but the real cold air will not arrive until late
Saturday night and through the day Sunday. There may still be a few
light showers around the area through this evening, but Friday should
be dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Another storm system will develop
over Texas Friday and it will pull a warm front north from the Gulf of
Mexico. By Sunday, the deep low-pressure area will be over
Pennsylvania. Much colder air will overspread Alabama late Saturday
night and Sunday. Many sections of the state should get about ½ inch
of rain Saturday, but further north in the Tennessee Valley there may
be more.
THE SNOW FLURRY QUESTION: We do not see any need to buy milk, Pop
Tarts, or anything else. As the precipitation tapers off late Saturday
night and early Sunday morning, it could change over to a few
flurries. The ground is very warm, so it should not cause any
problems. Again, we have to weigh evidence from more than one weather
model. One of our main weather models shows no flurries at all and the
other one indicates flurries as far south as about Centreville.
Sunday is going to be a rather raw day with north winds gusting as
high as 30 mph and, after an early morning low in the upper 20s, highs
will only reach the 40s.
THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Due to that storm system that we discussed
above, there may be a big snow event in parts of New York State and
Pennsylvania, mainly across Southern New York State where over 10
inches of snow may fall in some areas. This same storm is also going
to produce some snow in the Central Plains, but it does not appear to
be a major snowstorm, but even 1 or 2 inches will be major to those
places covered by ice. The high in Oklahoma City tomorrow is expected
to be 42 before the snow event. Warmest in the USA yesterday was 87 at
Harlingen, Texas. Coldest in the lower 48 states this morning was 13
below at Saranac Lake, New York. They, too, may get as much as half a
foot of snow over the next several days. Coldest in Alaska was 24
below at Arctic Village. If you really want to shiver, the temperature
today was hovering at 63 below zero at Ojmjakon in Eastern Russia. The
snow survey today shows that 51.2% of the lower 48 states has a snow
cover.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our granddaughter got home from Troy
University this afternoon for the Christmas holidays, so Little Miss
Molly will get a lot of loving from still another person. We will have
a houseful of humans through the holidays and for the foreseeable
future. Little Miss Molly will play with everyone until she is
exhausted. I will also try to see that she gets some long daytime
naps. At the vet yesterday, her blood work turned out to be excellent.
I sure hope Molly lives as long as I do and we both want to live 25
more years. Life goes on and it seems to get more interesting every
single day.....
