...Happy Veterans Day...

Today is Veterans Day, the day that we honor all of our veterans. It
is celebrated on November 11th, the original Armistice Day, which
celebrated the end of World War I. Did you know that Birmingham hosts
the nation's oldest and largest Veterans Day celebration? A variety
of events will be held in the Magic City as part of the 60th National
Veterans Day celebration, culminating in the National Veterans Day
Parade on Monday, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. downtown.

CHILLY START: Drier air flowing into Alabama has combined with good
radiational cooling conditions to produce another chilly night across
the area. Temperatures are in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Our winds will shift around to the southeast today
and moisture levels will begin slowly increasing. Clouds are
increasing to the west of Alabama as low level moisture invades the
lower Mississippi Valley. Some clouds will appear on the scene during
the day today. Readings tonight will be several degrees warmer than
those of this morning, mainly in the middle and upper 40s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Moisture levels will continue to increase as we
head into Monday and Tuesday. Skies will be partly cloudy, and
temperatures will be warming through the 70s. By Tuesday, an upper
level disturbance will head out of the Plains states toward the Ohio
Valley and Great Lakes, weakening as it goes. We could see a few
showers by late Tuesday night, but they will be more likely on
Wednesday and Thursday. A stronger disturbance will pass to our
north on Friday as a large trough begins to set up over the eastern
U.S. This will result in additional showers on Friday. But this
system will be accompanied by a front that will pass through the area
late on Friday, putting an end to the showers for the weekend.

HOLIDAY WEEK WEATHER: High pressure will build into Alabama behind
next weekend's system. That will hold into the first part of the
holiday week. But a deepening trough to our west will pout Alabama in
an increasingly southwesterly flow. As that happens, moisture levels
will increase dramatically and it looks like we will deal with showers
by late on Wednesday through Thanksgiving Day. A powerful storm
system will move out of the Rockies during the weekend after
Thanksgiving, and could create major travel problems across the Plains
into the Upper Midwest. We could be dealing with a round of strong
storms around Monday the 26th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Heavy snows across the Great Lakes.
Cleveland, Erie and Syracuse blanketed under amazing snowfall totals
caused by lake effect snows. 3 days storm totals included 68.9 inches
at Chardon OH, 54.8 inches at Edinboro PA and 50 inches at Shaker
Heights OH. 41 inches fell at Erie (city) and 27 inches at the Erie
Airport. 20.8 inches fell at Cleveland. Syracuse is the snowiest big
city on average in the lower 48 states with about 112 inches per year
of the white stuff.

...Looking For Rain...

It has now not rained in Birmingham since October 25th when 0.02
inches fell. Our rainfall deficit now stands at nearly 21 inches for
the year. Unfortunately, our much anticipated rainfall event for this
Tuesday looks a lot less likely. That's not good news.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Another beautiful weekend is in progress
across Central Alabama on this Saturday. Temperatures have warmed
mostly into the middle and upper 60s after some comfortable morning
lows around 40. A few clouds have been skirting the northeast corner
of the state in a northwesterly flow aloft, but skies over the rest of
the state are clear. Clear and cool conditions will prevail through
the overnight hours tonight. Our winds will gradually veer around to
the southeast by tomorrow, allowing moisture levels to rise slightly
and clouds will reappear. Temperatures tomorrow will look a lot like
today. High pressure will keep us dry through midweek. Showers will
affect the area in the Wednesday through Friday time frame.

NATIONALLY: A series of storm system is affecting the Pacific
Northwest. It will bring lowering snow levels and increasing snowfall
amounts across the Northwest and Rockies. A critical fire danger
will set up once again over Southern California starting tomorrow
through Tuesday as Santa Ana conditions are expected. Thunderstorms
were forming this afternoon over eastern Texas and Louisiana as Gulf
moisture returns to that region.

IN THE TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather over the southern
Caribbean remains rather disorganized. Significant development is not
expected from this system.

EUROPEAN STORM: A powerful North Sea storm, reminiscent of the Great
1953 North Sea Flood, brought the highest storms surges in two decades
to parts of Europe on Friday. Surge levels of ten feet forced closure
of the massive flood gates that protect Rotterdam. In the 1953 storm,
surges that exceeded twelve feet resulted in massive inundation of
across the Netherlands, killing 2,000 people.

TAURID METEOR SHOWER: From SpaceWeather.com…the annual Northern Taurid
meteor shower caused by Comet Encke peaks on Nov. 12th. Although
Taurid rates are normally low, only about five meteors per hour, those
five can be doozies. The shower is a well-known producer of slow,
bright fireballs visible at all hours of the night. If you're outside
after dark this weekend, be alert for Taurids.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: A significant tornado outbreak occurred over
the Veteran's Day weekend in 2002. Between Saturday night, November
9th and Monday morning, November 11th, a total of 76 tornadoes touched
down across seventeen states. Thirty six people died in the outbreak,
which is the second largest tornado outbreak ever observed in the U.S.
in November. More information available on the alabamawx.com blog.

...Nice Weekend But Still A Drought...

THE ALABAMA DISCUSSION: I guess we can describe the weather this
weekend as very nice across Alabama, but I sure feel guilty using that
description when we are still in the midst of an unbelievable drought.
The drought actually worsened during the last week, because there was
not a drop of rain. The U. S. Drought Monitor, posted once a week,
shows that Alabama now has 43% of the land area classed as a D4
drought, which is the worst of all designations. That is an increase
of about 8% coverage since last week. Alabama also suffers more D4
drought coverage than any other state, although D4 also extends into
parts of North Georgia, East Tennessee and a bit of the Carolinas.

With our nice Veterans' Day weekend, we do not see any rain and very
few clouds. The next chance of rain will be next week. It does not
look as promising as earlier weather models indicated and our best
chance is probably at midweek instead of about Tuesday, as it appeared
earlier. Very difficult to estimate how much rain will occur during
this event, but probably not more than ½ inch.
Meanwhile, we will have cool nights and comfortable afternoons. We
expect highs around 68 this weekend and into the lower 70s for much of
next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Ideal weather for today's college games. Alabama is
in Starkville to play Mississippi State with an 11:30 kickoff. It
should be about 62 at kickoff peaking around 68 during the game.
Auburn plays Georgia in Athens at 2:30—mostly sunshine with mid 60s at
kickoff, but falling into the 50s. Central Florida will be in
Birmingham to play UAB this evening—about 58 degrees for the 6:30
kickoff, but about 46 at the final whistle.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Be at the BJCC at 8:30 this morning for the 2007
version. Lots and lots of weather information, including storm spotter
training in two sessions—morning and afternoon. It is held in
association with the Alabama International Automobile Show. If you
attend it, you can also see the automobile show without charge.

A WEATHER MOMENT: In September 1992, more than 6 inches of rain in
less than 24 hours occurred at Islamabad, Pakistan. 1,200 people died
and 4 million persons were left homeless.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Friday afternoon, the temperature reached 90 at
Laredo, McAllen and Edinburg—all in Texas. That was the hottest in the
lower 48 states. The coldest was 9 above zero at Doylesville in the
mountains of Colorado. There is an interesting item in Bill Murray's
weather calendar for November 10. Way back in 1913, a man was working
on a steam locomotive near Great Bend, Nebraska. He saw a tornado
approaching his location. He climbed into the firebox of the engine
and he was spared. Of course, there was no fire in the firebox at the
time.

PLEASANT VETERAN'S DAY WEATHER: There may be a few scattered clouds
around the area on Sunday for Veteran's Day, but there will be more
sun than clouds as temperatures edge upward to near the 70-degree
mark. That will also be the story for the next several days with cool
nights, but not real cold, and afternoon highs moderating to the mid
70s by Tuesday. Another model run seems to push back the chance of
showers and thunderstorms that we thought would be here by Tuesday.
While there could be a few showers showing up late Tuesday, the better
chance will probably at some point later on Wednesday.

It was fairly cold across Alabama again last night, but not to the
extent of the previous two nights. Most areas had temperatures in the
30s, but there were some upper 20s in the NE Alabama valleys. Most
lows tonight should be in the 40s, but a few spots in NE and East
Alabama may have lows in the upper 30s. Some clouds moved into the
area today and held temperatures down a bit. Those clouds should be
out of here for the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The kick off is at 11:30 Saturday for the Alabama/
Mississippi State game in Starkville. Mostly sunshine with 62 at kick
off warming to 68 during the game. Auburn is at Georgia for a 2:30
p.m. kick off. It should be sunny and 64 in Athens, but falling into
the 50s. Central Florida is at UAB for an evening game. Fair and cool
with 58 at the 6:30 kick off, dropping to about 50 at the final whistle.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget it starts at 8:30 tomorrow morning
at the BJCC in downtown Birmingham in association with the Alabama
International Automobile Show. If you attend the weather event, that
gives you free admission also to the auto show. There will be lots of
information dispensed about the weather and there will be a morning
and afternoon session. See you there?

A WEATHER MOMENT: When Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida, it
caused about 1.4 million persons to become homeless. At that time,
that was about equal to the entire population of Orlando.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Still a bit hot in the Southwest. The old
backyard thermometer reached 91 yesterday in Phoenix and Bullhead
City, Arizona and also in Pecos and Wink, Texas. The lower 48 cold
spot this morning, a familiar story, it was 11 at Saranac Lake, New
York. Coldest in Alaska was 11 below at Arctic Village. Resolute, in
Northern Canada, was reporting 18 below zero and drifting snow this
afternoon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: So neat to wake up with Little Miss
Molly on the king size bed. If I get up first and tippy-toe, I can see
her little tail start swishing in the semi-darkness and those bright
eyes looking up at me. That triggers an immediate belly rub. If she
wakes up first, she often comes walking up my little body, to stand on
my chest and look down at me with those bright eyes, ears laid back
and I can hear the swishing of her tail. How could anyone possibly
wake up in a bad mood with that greeting. On the walking trail,
several trees have reached maximum color. Even when there is a
drought, a certain number of trees seem determined to please humans by
showing their best like a lady with a new dress to show off. Life goes
on.......

...Dry Through The Weekend...

A FINE FALL WEEKEND: Our gradual warming trend will continue today;
temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid to upper 60s, which
is close to normal levels for this time of the year. A few high clouds
will float by from time to time due to a disturbance passing north of
Alabama, but the low level air will remain very dry, and there is no
chance of rain. We stay rain-free over the weekend, with partly to
mostly sunny days and clear chilly nights. The high tomorrow and
Sunday will be very close to 70.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We expect excellent weather for high school and
college games with fair dry weather expected everywhere. For high
school games in Central Alabama tonight, the temperature will fall
into the 50s during the game after a kickoff temperature near 60.
Tomorrow, Alabama will be at Starkville to play Mississippi State at
Scott Field with an early kick off at 11:30...mostly sunny, 66 at kick
off rising to 72 later in the game. Auburn will be in Athens for a key
game with Georgia. It should be 68 and clear for the 2:30 p.m. kick
off, dropping into the 50s during the second half. Central Florida
will be at UAB for a 6:30 start at Legion Field. Temperatures will be
falling into the 60s under a mostly clear sky.

NEXT WEEK: We finally have a decent chance of rain next week; a strong
upper trough will sweep across the Deep South with a healthy round of
showers and storms late Tuesday, Tuesday night, and possibly into a
part of the day Wednesday. For now it looks like an event that should
generate around one-half inch of rain for most communities. Cooler and
drier air sets in for the latter half of the week.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Computer model runs in recent days have trended
toward a warmer and wetter solution for the week of November 19-23; we
won't be able to resolve specific details until the middle part of
next week.

HODGEPODGE: The coldest spot we could find in Alabama early yesterday
was the community of Muscadine, in Cleburne County (near the Georgia
line), where the low was 21. Coldest place in Alaska was Northway with
six degrees below zero. Birmingham's rain deficit for the year is up
to 20.79". Anniston's deficiency is now 28.45".

STORM ALERT XTREME: We hope to see you tomorrow at the BJCC for our
annual severe storm training session. Once again this year, the
Alabama International
Auto Show is a sponsor of Storm Alert XTREME, and it will be held at
the BJCC. This is your chance to learn more about Alabama weather, and
to be trained as a storm spotter. ABC 33/40 Meteorologist Brian
Peters, long time WCM (Warning Coordination Meteorologist) for the
National Weather Service in Birmingham, will teach a basic and
advanced course on spotting small scale features within thunderstorms
that are very important to meteorologists. And, remember, if you
attend Storm Alert Xtreme, you get free admission into the Alabama
International Auto Show! See the details on the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog.

NOT AS COLD TONIGHT: There will be a few surprises on the thermometer
across North and Central Alabama tonight. While we are calling for an
average low of 36 along the I-20 corridor, look for low temperatures
closer to freezing in a number of the east and NE Alabama valleys.
Tomorrow should feature a quick warm up as the cold air dome moves on
to the east. We do not see another major change to colder for the rest
of the week and through the weekend and even into the middle of next
week. By this weekend, including Veteran's Day, the high should be
near 70. There will be some scattered clouds, but more sun than clouds
for the next several days. It was plenty cold across the state again
last night. In Moody, 33/40 Skywatcher, Matt Padgett, reported
temperatures below freezing for 9 hours with some freeze damage to
plants. Their low was 27. Again today we have a long list of low
temperatures on the Weather Blog. Some of the coldest included 21 at
Muscadine; 22 at Black Creek, Cottondale and DeSoto State Park; 23 at
Crossville, Ft. Payne, Mumford, Sycamore; and 24 at Hubbertville.

THE RAIN SITUATION: As of today, the deficiency at Birmingham Airport
for 2007 is 20.64 inches. Our total so far is 25.23 inches—less than
one-half of what we had received last year at this time, which was
52.25 inches. Ashville has received only 21 inches of rain this year.
The next rain event will be early next week. We get mixed signals from
models about the timing on the best chance, but it appears that it
will be later Tuesday or Wednesday, probably more so on Wednesday.

A METEOROLOGY MINUTE: Hourly weather observations all over the world
record the wind speed in knots. Here in the USA, when those reports
are released to the public, it is translated to mph. If you want to
change knots to mph, multiply by 1.15. So, 100 knots would be 115 mph.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks like excellent weather for high school and
college games with fair dry weather expected everywhere. For high
school games in Central Alabama, the temperature will fall into the
50s during the game. On Saturday, Alabama will be at Starkville to
play Mississippi State with an early kick off at 11:30—mostly sunny,
66 at kick off rising to 72 later in the game. Auburn will be in
Athens for a key game with Georgia. It should be 68 and clear for the
2:30 p.m. kick off, dropping into the 50s during the second half.
Central Florida will be at UAB for a 6:30 start. Temperatures will be
falling into the 60s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I walked through the living area one
time this morning to retrieve about my 8th cup of coffee. The majority
owner was sitting in the recliner hugging our 10-month old grandson,
but Little Miss Molly was competing for attention nestling on the
footrest. Last night in our king size bed, she stayed huddled tightly
against one or the other all night. So neat. Life goes on.....

...A Slow Warming Trend Ahead...

DRY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Today will be the 12th consecutive day with
no measurable rain for a large part of Alabama. Dry air means lots of
sunshine today, and a warming trend will begin this afternoon after
another very frosty morning. We will reach the low 60s this afternoon,
still about 5 degrees below normal for November 8. The slow warm-up
continues tomorrow with a high in the mid to upper 60s, and we will
peak around 70 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday. A clipper passing
north of Alabama could bring some scattered clouds tomorrow, but we
still expect a good deal of sunshine. And, the weather over the
weekend will remain dry; excellent weather for the high school playoff
games tomorrow night, and the college games across the Deep South on
Saturday.

SOME RAIN NEXT WEEK: We are still looking at our next good chance of
showers and thunderstorms around Tuesday of next week. Based on the
projected strength of the upper air trough coming in here from the
west, it looks like we will have a chance of strong to severe
thunderstorms with rain totals of one-half to one inch. Then, another
shot of colder air rolls in here during the latter half of the week,
which means we will probably have one or two mornings with sub-
freezing lows again.

FIRST FREEZE: Yesterday morning was the first widespread freeze of the
season for much of the Southeast U.S. Some observed lows included 9
degrees at Phillipi, West Virginia, 12 atop Mount LeConte in the Great
Smoky Mountains, 13 atop Mount Mitchell, North Carolina, 23 at Black
Creek (in Northeast Etowah County, not too far from Gadsden) and
Hamilton, and 25 at Pinson, Fort Payne, and Munford. A freeze was seen
as far south as Troy, down in South Alabama's Pike County, where the
low was 30.

HODGEPODGE: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Gila Bend,
Arizona with 95 degrees. Alabama's warmest November temperature on
record is 85 degrees, measured on November 1, 2000 and November 2, 2003.

STORM ALERT XTREME: We hope to see you his Saturday (November 10) at
the BJCC for our annual severe storm training session. Once again this
year, the Alabama International Auto Show is a sponsor of Storm Alert
XTREME, and it will be held at the BJCC. This is your chance to learn
more about Alabama weather, and to be trained as a storm spotter. ABC
33/40 Meteorologist Brian Peters, long time WCM (Warning Coordination
Meteorologist) for the National Weather Service in Birmingham, will
teach a basic and advanced course on spotting small scale features
within thunderstorms that are very important to meteorologists. And,
remember, if you attend Storm Alert Xtreme, you get free admission
into the Alabama International Auto Show!

ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT: Temperatures were below freezing over a large
part of North and Central Alabama early this morning. The freezing
temperatures extended at least halfway down the state. Here is a short
list of some of the colder temperatures. A complete list of morning
lows can be found on the ABC 33/40 weather blog, including some lows
from other sections of the country also.

22 in Cottondale
23 Hamilton, Black Creek
24 Odenville
25 Pinson, Ft. Payne, Mumford
26 Rainbow City, Decatur, Concord/Hueytown
27 Scottsboro, Talladega, SW Huntsville
28 Birmingham, DeSoto State Park, Cullman, Fayette, Centreville,
Vinemont

We expect it to be just as cold tonight, because a high-pressure area
will be over us. The dew point this afternoon was as low as 18 across
Central Alabama. The sky will be clear and winds light. A warming
trend will start tomorrow and by this weekend, afternoon temperatures
will be 70 or better. The latest model run tends to push the decent
chance of showers and maybe some thunderstorms back a bit to about
Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

MISCELLANEOUS: The temperature fell to 9 degrees in Philippi, West
Virginia this morning. It was 12 on Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky
Mountains and 17 on Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina. The coldest in the
lower 48 was 10 at Kremmling, Colorado. Coldest in Alaska was 15 below
at Anaktuvuk Pass. As much as 12 inches of new snow in Upper Michigan
at Champion and 7 inches at Marquette.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget to show up at 8:30 Saturday morning
at the BJCC in downtown Birmingham. There will be morning and
afternoon sessions with spotter training and a lot more. If you come
to that, you can also attend the automobile show free.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure enjoyed speaking to the
Trussville Rotary Club early this morning. Thanks to Hale Vick for the
invite. We met at the new Marriott in Trussville at the Pinnacle.
Great view from atop the ridge and a yummy, yummy breakfast. I often
wonder what would have happened if some of the tyrants of the world
had a little doggie to calm them down. For example, if Hitler could
have had a Little Miss Molly, maybe he would not have had a
determination to rule the world. She has a calming effect on everybody
and is a true ambassador. Life goes on and I stay calm because of
Molly.....

...Another Freeze Late Tonight...

ANOTHER FREEZE AHEAD: Today will be another day with maximum sunshine,
and temperatures well below normal levels for early November in
Alabama. Today's highs will be mostly in the 55 to 59 degree range.
And, tonight, with a clear sky and light wind, temperatures will drop
quickly, and another significant freeze is expected. By daybreak
tomorrow, most spots will be somewhere between 25 and 35 degrees. The
valleys and protected areas will be colder, ridge tops will be warmer.
Some of the normally colder spots will be below freezing for 8 hours
tonight.

A warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon as we reach the low to mid
60s, and by the time the weekend arrives, afternoon highs will be in
the 68 to 72 degree range. The air remains very dry, and the sky will
stay mostly clear through Sunday. Another excellent weekend is ahead
for the high school playoff and college football games across the Deep
South.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like our next chance of showers and thunderstorms
will come on Tuesday of next week; a strong upper trough will be
moving in from the west, and with any degree of instability we might
be dealing with strong to severe thunderstorms. For now it looks like
the kind of system that could produce 1/2 to one inch of rain. Then,
another surge of colder air blows in here a week from today; that
airmass looks very similar to the one we have in place now.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Some of the heavier rain totals around the
nation yesterday included 1.42" at Erie, PA (where the high was only
44) and 1.33" at Buffalo, NY. Coldest spot in the nation was 8 degrees
below zero at Northway, Alaska. Coldest in the "lower 48" was
Hettinger and Minot, North Dakota with 3 degrees. Many Alabama
communities were below freezing this morning for the first time since
April; we will run down a list of lows on the afternoon edition later
today.

STORM ALERT XTREME: We hope to see you his Saturday (November 10) at
the BJCC for our annual severe storm training session. Once again this

FROST AND FREEZE TONIGHT: The growing season comes to an end as
temperatures drop to the freezing mark tonight over most of North and
Central Alabama. It was not the greatest of growing seasons by any
means because of the severe drought. Your specific location will
greatly determine how cold you get the next two nights. We are calling
for an average low of 30 across Central Alabama tonight and 29
Wednesday night. If you live on Red Mountain and Shades Mountain and
other higher terrain, you will not get that cold. To the contrary
there will be pockets of 23 to 28-degree cold in the better protected
North Alabama valleys. While the frost will be rather widespread, it
would be even more if there was a little surface moisture available.

The cold front swept across Alabama during the night and by tomorrow
afternoon it is projected to be all the way into Cuba and the Yucatan.
A high-pressure system will be right over us Wednesday night. That is
why we chose 29 for the low, as there will be very little wind and the
weather will be completely clear.

When that line of showers along the front moved into North Alabama
late last night, it simply turned over and played dead. The biggest
rain amount I could find was 0.15 at Meridianville north of
Huntsville. Several other places got barely enough to wet the pavement.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: That front set off some stronger storms to the
north of Alabama. Nashville was drenched with 1.65 inches of rain,
Crossville, Tenn., 1.31 and Percy Priest Dam 1.62. The low this
morning on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains was 21. They got 0.75
inches of rain. Hope for that ended before it dropped below freezing.
How about this, the first lake-effect snow tonight for places like
Booneville, New York with 2-5 inches. Cold spots this morning: 4 above
at Minot, North Dakota and 3 below zero at Northway, Alaska. The war
zone is finally cooling off. The high in Basrah, Iraq should be
between 85 and 89 for the next 5 days.

STORM ALERT XTREME: It will be Saturday at the BJCC starting at 8:30.
There will be a morning and afternoon training session by Brian Peters
and a lot more interesting weathers stuff. The Alabama International
Auto Show is one of the sponsors. Remember, if you attend the weather
program (which is free), you also get free admission to the
International Automobile Show.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanks to Bill Murray for subbing for me
yesterday. The majority owner had cataract surgery. We were away again
this morning on a 90-mile round trip for a follow up. A marked
increase in autumn foliage in the general area, but still way below
par. There are increasing indications that Little Miss Molly is even
smarter than I give her credit for. She knows I go back and forth
between my office and kitchen for at least 6 to 8 cups of coffee a
day. She places herself in the living area to where she knows I will
pause and give her a belly rub. I feel sure she has had an estimated
8,500 belly rubs in the 5 years we have had her. Life goes on......

...A Big Change To Colder Weather...

A BIG CHANGE TO COOLER WEATHER: North winds gusting as high as 25 mph
today will bring in the coolest air so far this fall season for
Alabama and the Deep South. In fact, daytime temperatures today will
be about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday; most North Alabama
communities will fail to reach 60 degrees today despite maximum
sunshine.

FREEZING MORNINGS AHEAD: We expect a freeze both tomorrow and Thursday
morning as the colder air continues to settle into the state. As you
all know, this is not a "one number" kind of place on a clear, calm
morning. We expect actual lows to vary from 23 to 35 degrees both
mornings, with the colder readings in the valleys and protected areas.
We project an average low of 31 tomorrow morning, and 30 early
Thursday morning. This will be our first freeze since April 8, and
will mark the end of a very difficult 2007 growing season for Alabama
farmers. Between the April freeze and the ongoing drought, it has
really been tough out there.
The weather begins to warm up a bit late in the week, and the dry air
will remain in place through the weekend, so another excellent
football weekend is ahead for the state for sunny mild days and clear
cool nights Friday through Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like we will finally have a decent opportunity for
rain early next week; a vigorous upper trough will bring a healthy
round of showers and thunderstorms to the state, and at this time it
looks like the best chance of them will come either Monday night or
Tuesday. Based on the expected strength of the system, we might be
dealing with severe thunderstorms.

TOO DRY: Birmingham's rain deficit for 2007 is up to 20.34"; the
deficiency at Tuscaloosa is 26.99", and 28.05" at Anniston.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Thunderstorms dropped .90" of rain on Nashville
late yesterday; Davidson County, Tennessee was even under a tornado
warning for a brief time, but no damage was reported. Coldest spot in
the U.S. yesterday morning was Fort Yukon, Alaska with -8. In the
"lower 48", Ketchum, Idaho dropped to 10 degrees. Hottest places were
Wink, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona with 93 degrees.

Things are beginning to change across Alabama on this Monday
afternoon. A strong low pressure system is moving through the Great
Lakes. Alabama continues in a northwesterly flow aloft. The surface
low and upper trough will drive a fairly strong cold front through
Alabama overnight. Ahead of it, clouds will be on the increase from
the west and northwest this afternoon. A band of showers will move
into the state this evening and pass through the area overnight.
Rainfall amounts will be light, generally less than one tenth of an
inch, if any falls at all.

TOMORROW WILL FEEL DIFFERENT: Instead of today's highs in the upper
70s, the mercury will struggle to get out of the 50s here. It will be
sunny but windy, with northerly winds averaging some 8-18 mph. The
increased winds, low humidities and continued drought conditions will
support an escalated fire danger Tuesday afternoon, so outdoor burning
should be postponed.

FREEZE IN OUR FUTURE: A freeze is possible across much of the area
Tuesday night and again Wednesday with a surface high in the
neighborhood, light winds and excellent radiational cooling
conditions. Temperatures will fall into the 20s at many locations, so
most places will see their first light freeze of the season. After a
sunny day on Wednesday, with temperatures again in the 50s, another
freeze is possible Wednesday night when readings will be as low as
Tuesday night.

CLIPPER SYSTEM: A Clipper type low pressure system will slide
southeastward Thursday and Friday through the Great Lakes toward the
Mid-Atlantic. It may bring snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast before turning into a decent, nor'easter off the East Coast
next weekend. I earlier believed we might see a brief round of
showers Friday, but it looks like the system will simply deliver a
reinforcing shot of cool, dry air, setting the stage for a beautiful
weekend here.

NEXT TROUGH: The global models have been consistently pointing to
the possibility of a big storm system across the eastern U.S. next
week. They are still bullish on that idea with a strong negative tilt
trough rotating through here on the 13th. This would bring good rain
chances and the possibility of some severe weather. Earlier runs had
indicated there might be some cold air involved, even pointing to snow
down through the Appalachians. The system looks a lot warmer now.
We'll take the rain, thanks.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Records of all kinds were falling like autumn
leaves across the U.S. Records were reported in at least twenty eight
states, including record highs, record lows, record warm minimums,
record rainfalls and daily record snowfalls. Record highs were
established at dozens of locations across the eastern United States.
Here at home, new daily temperature records were broken at Birmingham
and Pinson as the mercury reached 83 and 85 degrees respectively. In
addition, Birmingham's early morning low of 71 was the warmest low
ever for the date.

...Perhaps A Shower Overnight...

If you were up early this morning, I hope that you got the message to
step outside and enjoy the spectacular sky show with a crescent moon,
Venus, Saturn, Mars, the new exploding comet, the International Space
Station and the Space Shuttle all onstage. The weather was very
cooperative, with clear skies and chilly temperatures.

CHILLY START: Temperatures are in the 30s and lower 40s across much
of the area this morning. Not quite as cold as Sunday morning, and
certainly not as cold as we will experience Wednesday morning.

SHOWERS AHEAD? An approaching cold front will be preceded by a narrow
band of moisture tonight. This will produce an area of showers that
will precede southeastward across the state overnight. Rain chances
will be limited and so will rainfall amounts. Clouds will begin to
increase late today into the overnight. Most of the showers should be
out of the area by Tuesday morning. Tuesday will feature clearing
skies, along with breezy and cooler conditions. .

FREEZE POSSIBLE TUESDAY NIGHT: Some of the normally colder locations
across the northern parts of the area have already experienced a light
freeze, but it appears that a more significant and widespread freeze
is possible by early Wednesday morning. High pressure will dominate
our weather Wednesday and Thursday with another chilly morning on
Thursday.

LATE WEEK RAIN CHANCES: Another system will move through the area on
Friday, perhaps producing another small chance of showers. But again,
it will not do much to help alleviate our drought situation.

BIGGER SYSTEM OUT AT 12 DAYS: Another system will pass through the
area on Sunday, giving us another chance or rain, but amounts will
still be on the smallish side. A bigger system seems to be getting
organized for Thursday the 15th, but you have to remember that out
that far, we are talking as much science fiction as science. But we
can hope.

CRYSTAL BALL FOR TURKEY DAY: As long as we are dealing in science
fiction, it that GFS output verifies, we might see another wet weather
system just in time for the Holiday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: A volcano beneath the Vatnajokull ice cap in
Iceland tremendous quantities of melt water to pool underneath the
glacier. The outer edge of the glacier created an ice dam that held
back the water. The ice dam suddenly burst on this date, releasing a
massive flood nearly 2000 feet wide and 12 feet deep that caused
tremendous damage. The peak flow was 50,000m3/sec. Flash floods from
ice dams such as this have probably scoured the world's landscape,
including the Scablands of Washington State. It has been proven that
these geological features were caused by the great Missoula floods at
the end of the last Ice Age, when glacial Lake Missoula was released
several times over a 2,000 year period some 15,000 years ago.

...Showers Monday Night...

Temperatures were once again on the chilly side this morning, with
lows across the area in the 30s. The mercury dropped to 32F at
Anniston and 33F at Tuscaloosa, two of the cooler spots. Pinson did
managed to hit the freezing mark. It was 31F in Crossville and 30F at
Fort Payne. Lows tonight will not be quite as cool, but as we look
toward Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the first widespread freezes of
the season will be possible.

FIRE DANGER HIGH: Low humidities, a fresh northerly wind and
extremely dry vegetation are contributing to a higher than normal fire
danger this afternoon across Central Alabama. Outdoor burning is
strongly discouraged. Humidity levels will be higher on Monday, but
by Tuesday, the fire danger may become extreme behind our next cold
front as strong winds and low humidities conspire to produce wildfire
conditions. We can only hope that showers are more plentiful tomorrow
night than we think they will be.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THOSE SHOWERS: Our winds will shift around to the
southwest on Monday, and moisture levels will come up a bit ahead of
an approaching trough and cold front. Unfortunately, the moisture
will still be rather limited. Clouds will increase Monday night and a
band of showers will move into the Tennessee Valley. It will be
weakening as it moves southeastward. We will call for a chance of
showers during the overnight hours.

FREEZE WARNING TUESDAY NIGHT: Tuesday will feature clearing skies
and a chilly northwest wind. Temperatures will likely stay in the 50s
across the area. Then with an excellent radiation opportunity in
place Tuesday night, temperatures will dip into the 20s over North
Alabama with readings near or just below freezing across Central
sections. This may produce our first significant freeze of the
season. Precautions will have to be taken to protect any tender
vegetation Tuesday night and again Wednesday night. It looks like we
will then stay dry through Sunday, although there could be a shower on
Friday with a passing system.

TROPICS: Extratropical Storm Noel raced north northeastward
overnight. After bringing high winds and tides to Rhode Island,
Massachusetts and Maine, the storm targeted Nova Scotia and is now
over Newfoundland. Up to 150,000 people lost power in Nova Scotia.
Another 14,000 people were without power in New England after winds
gusting to near hurricane force produced dozens of wind damage
reports. A disturbance over the western Caribbean very nearly became
a tropical depression before it moved inland over northeastern
Nicaragua. It will produce life threatening flooding and mudslides
over Honduras and Nicaragua.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The "Yankee" Hurricane hit Miami. The storm
was so-named because it came from a northeasterly direction. This was
rare, because hurricanes almost never approach south Florida from the
northeast. The wind speed exceeds 95 mph at Miami. Following on the
heels of the Labor Day storm, warnings for this hurricane came much
earlier while the storm was still far at sea. More in today's Weather
Blog.
