It is not as obvious here yet, with temperatures still very warm (some
locations will see 90 today.) But look to the north. A significant
outbreak of severe weather is expected again today over parts of the Upper
Mississippi Valley, including Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.
This activity is developing in advance of a strong upper level trough that
is advancing across the northern tier of states. Winter storm warnings are
in effect over a large part of western Montana with snow advisories over
parts of the Tetons and Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. Up to 6 to 12 inches
of snow will fall over parts of western Montana above 5000 feet.

OUR WEATHER: Enjoying another gorgeous late summer Saturday across Alabama.
A few locations will make at least 90 degrees today under nearly total
sunshine. Skies will be clear and temperatures comfortable tonight with
lows dropping into the lower to middle 60s. Tomorrow will dawn clear and
nice again with abundant sunshine. Highs will rival those of today.
Moisture levels will be on the rise tomorrow, however, slowly at first
leading to a gradual increase in clouds. A cold front will be approaching
Alabama from the northwest, and it will set the stage for a slight chance of
showers and storms during the overnight hours Sunday night. Showers and
storms will increase quickly Monday morning and may last much of the day and
through the overnight as the front moves slowly through the area. Severe
weather is possible with this system if the upper level dynamics are strong
enough and there is sufficient instability. It is a situation that deserves
monitoring. Rain should end Tuesday morning with clearing, drier and cooler
air in the wake of the system.

TROPICS: Gordon is still a hurricane several hundred miles east of Bermuda.
Helene became a hurricane just before noon over one thousand miles east of
the Leeward Islands. It is expected to slowly recurve to the north, well
east of Bermuda. In the Pacific, Hurricane Lane is a major hurricane with
top winds of 125 mph. The hurricane will strike the Mexican coast late this
afternoon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1928: Residents around Lake Okeechobee knew that the
approaching hurricane was bad. But they had no idea how bad it would be.
The lake was high after a summer of heavy rains. As the Category Four storm
began blowing over Palm Beach, conditions around the lake began to
deteriorate rapidly. The 125 mph winds blowing in a counterclockwise
direction piled the waters of the huge lake against the southern shoreline.
The small dikes were quickly swamped by what would eventually be a 25 foot
storm surge. Residents were driven from their disintegrating homes into the
raging waters. As they sought refuge in the trees, many were bitten by
crazed water moccasins. Towns like Belle Glade and Moore Haven were washed
away. When the terrible night was over, 1,836 were said to have died. The
actual count was much higher, as many of the people who were killed were
migrant workers or other impoverished people whose lives were not valued.

===================================================================

Just two years ago, Birmingham experienced one of its worst weather days in
history as Hurricane Ivan made landfall during the early morning hours just
west of Gulf Shores as a Category Three hurricane with top winds of 125 mph.
The hurricane caused significant surge flooding along the Alabama and
Northwest Florida coasts, with the worst damage in the Perdido Key. The
surge was measured at 10-15 feet from the Baldwin County coast to the Destin
area. Seven people died in the Panama City and Blountstown area of Florida
on the afternoon of the 15th. A peak wind gust of 48 mph was reported at
the Birmingham Airport and 9.81 inches of rain fell, a 24 hour record for
the Magic City. The pressure dropped to a very low 989.6 mb (29.22 inches)
at Birmingham as the low passed.

OUR FORECAST: Today will be a beautiful day here in North and Central
Alabama lot of sunshine and very warm temperatures. Highs will top out in
the upper 80s with a few 90 degree readings possible. Skies will be clear
tonight with temperatures dropping off into the lower 60s. Moisture levels
will be on the increase tomorrow as the Gulf of Mexico opens up more and
southerly winds begin to increase. Can't rule out the chance of a shower
late Sunday night, but the main rain and storm activity will come on Monday
as a cold front approaches from the northwest. It looks like the best
chances for storms, some of which could be strong to severe, will come
Monday afternoon into the overnight hours. The front will slowly move
across the area, with showers exiting to the east on Tuesday. Cooler
conditions will prevail during the midweek period, making it feel positively
springlike.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: UAB travels to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs at
noon. Sunny and warm conditions will prevail with temperatures during the
game in the upper 80s. Auburn hosts LSU on the Plains this afternoon and
it will be warm, with gametime temperatures approaching 90 degrees. It
should be sunny and dry. Alabama entertains Louisiana-Monroe at the
Capstone tonight. Mostly clear skies will prevail with temperatures falling
into the 70s during the game.

TROPICS: Gordon and Helene are of no consequence except to shipping at
this time in the Atlantic. In the Pacific, Hurricane Lane will move inland
over Mexico, brushing the southern tip of Baja California. It may well be a
major hurricane.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Cape Fear, North
Carolina, causing massive inland flooding, the worst in the history of North
Carolina. The toll of 56 deaths made Floyd the most deadly U.S. hurricane
since Agnes in 1972. Having weakened from its Category 4 status three days
earlier, the hurricane made landfall on the North Carolina Coast near Cape
Fear at 3 am EDT with top winds of 110 mph. The hurricane dumped 19 inches
of rain on Wilmington NC and 16 inches near Myrtle Beach SC. Rainfall
totals were as high as 20 inches over portions of eastern North Carolina and
Virginia.

AFTERNOONS GETTING WARMER: Looks like great weather over the weekend
across Alabama. Nights will be cool, but the afternoons will be
getting warmer. In fact by Sunday afternoon, the old thermometer may
reach to 90 across Central Alabama and maybe 92 in such places as
Tuscaloosa and Livingston. We expect lows tonight mostly in the upper
50s and lower 60s for Saturday night.

A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE EARLY IN THE WEEK: Another cold front will
reach Central Alabama Monday night and move through the state Tuesday.
This is going to bring another round of showers and thunderstorms.
Here in the central part of the state, the main showers and storms
will start Monday afternoon and become more numerous Monday night.
They should end Tuesday morning as the wind shifts to the NW and turns
cooler. We may see some low temperatures by the middle of next week
down close to the 50-degree mark. We have introduced a slight risk of
a few severe thunderstorms later Monday and Monday night. We know that
is a little far out to be that specific, but that is just a heads up.

LAST NIGHT: The old thermometer dropped to lows very similar to
those of Thursday morning. Some of the lowest this morning included 50
at Cullman, Valley Head and Black Creek. Most of the other lows across
North and Central Alabama varied from 52 to 56. It will be almost that
cool tonight.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No chance of rain for tonight's high school games
or the college games on Saturday. In fact, it will be completely
clear. UAB plays Georgia in Athens at noon. The temperature should top
out at 87. It will also be around 87 in Auburn for the 2:30 kickoff
with LSU, lowering to near 80 by the end of the game. The
Alabama-Louisiana/Monroe in Tuscaloosa does not start until 6:00pm.
Look for 83 degrees at kickoff and about 75 at the final whistle.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Gordon has weakened to a Category 2 with
sustained winds of 100 mph centered about 700 miles east of Bermuda.
He will continue to weaken moving NE over the open Atlantic. Tropical
Storm Helene was way out in the Atlantic 1,355 miles east of the
Leeward Islands. She may become a hurricane Saturday, but no threat to
land.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Some cold temperatures this morning included
19 in Stanley, Idaho, 27 in Lodgepole, Idaho, 21 in Deadman Valley in
NW Canada, and 106 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica…some of the higher
mountains in Western Montana could get as much as two feet of snow
over the weekend…about one-half foot in the Northern Utah mountains…at
Mount Rushmore, South Dakota it was 94 yesterday. Their temperature
will plunge to the mid 30s late in the weekend with a rain/snow mix.

...Lots of Weekend Sunshine...

WARMING UP FOR THE WEEKEND: Afternoon temperatures will trend upward for the
next three days, and by Sunday we will be around the 90 degree mark by
mid-afternoon. Early mornings will remain pleasant, however, and there is no
significant chance of rain through the weekend. You will probably begin to
notice increasing humidity levels by Sunday, however, and flow of moisture
will increase even more Monday as a cold front approaches from the
northwest.
Our next chance of showers and storms will come Monday afternoon, Monday
night, and Tuesday of next week as the front passes through the state. At
this point it looks like the system will bring average rainfall amounts of
one-half to one inch. A few strong storms are possible, but a major severe
weather threat is not expected at this time as the main dynamics pass north
of Alabama. Cooler and drier air will follow the rain for the middle part of
next week.

A PREVIEW OF WINTER: The same weather system that will swing the front
toward Alabama early next week will bring the first significant snow of the
season to the northern Rocky Mountain region over the weekend. High terrain
locations in Montana and Wyoming might see around one foot of snow over the
next 24 hours.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Needless to say, the weather tonight will be ideal for the
high school football games across Alabama. Under a clear sky, temperatures
will fall through the 70s during the games with a light northeast breeze.

Tomorrow's big in-state college game comes down at Jordan-Hare Stadium,
where Auburn will host LSU at 2:30. The sky will be sunny with a temperature
of about 85 degrees at kickoff, falling to near 80 by the end of the game.
Alabama will host Louisiana-Monroe tomorrow evening (kickoff a few minutes
after 6:00) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The sky will be clear;
the temperature will fall from near 82 at kickoff to the mid 70s by the end
of the game.

UAB has a tough assignment this week; they will travel to Athens to take on
the Georgia Bulldogs. The game begins at 12:00 noon CDT, and will be played
under a sunny sky. Temperatures will hover in the 83 to 86 degree range
during the game.

TROPICAL UPDATE: Hurricane Gordon and Tropical Storm Helene continue to move
through the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on tracks that will keep them far
from the U.S. mainland. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin remains quiet and
there are no systems threatening the Gulf of Mexico for the next several
days.

EXTREMES: Still hot in the desert southwest; the nation's hot spot yesterday
was Death Valley, CA with 110 degrees. Coldest place yesterday morning was
Doe Lake, MI with 29 degrees.

BLUEST SKY SINCE BEFORE COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA: Well, that is
not true, but I thought it would grab your attention. As I drove all
across Deerfoot Parkway in NE Jefferson County this morning, the sky
was brilliant blue and it seemed you could see forever. The lower
humidity was definitely noticeable. Before we discuss the future, we
want to list a representative sampling of low temperatures across
Alabama this morning:

50 in Valley Head, DeSoto State Park, Crossville, Black Creek
(actually 49.6 in Black Creek)
51 in Russellville
52 in Cottondale and Cullman Airport
54 in Jasper and Ft. Payne
56 in East Trussville (Jay Shelley, retired NWS), Anniston, Tuscaloosa
57 in Inverness, Arab, Birmingham, Decatur

Great weather on through the weekend, although it will get a bit
hotter by Sunday and some places will reach the 90-degree mark and
there will be some increase in humidity by then. The humidity will
stay low through Saturday with highs in the mid and upper 80s and lows
in the upper 50s. Translation: great football weather for Friday night
high school and Saturday college. Our next rain will come on Monday as
another cold front approaches. The scattered showers and thunderstorms
late Monday and Monday night should end early Tuesday as a fresh
supply of cooler air arrives.

OUR VAST WEATHER WORLD: The weatherscape across North America is
beginning to change. Colder air pushing down from Western Canada will
bring snow to the North and Central Rockies. At midday, it was a cold
38 degrees with a steady rain at St. Mary, Montana and 33 with
visibility of ¼ mile and snow at Mullen Pass, Idaho. Some of the
mountains in Western Montana may get over a foot of snow in the higher
elevations…low temperatures this morning 31 at Hibbing, Minnesota and
28 at Gulkana, Alaska.

ALL ABOUT THE TROPICS: Hurricane Gordon has become a major hurricane
way out in the Atlantic some 560 miles ESE of Bermuda. Sustained winds
were 120 mph with gusts to 150. He should not bother land. Tropical
Storm Helene should become a hurricane Friday, but she is expected to
move NW and north over the open Atlantic also. A nervous weather area
over the Eastern Caribbean has calmed down.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I did not think I would ever see it
happen. Little Miss Molly turned down a ballgame. I guess she was
justified. We played three long innings late last night and she was so
pooped that her tongue was hanging out constantly and her tail had
almost quit wagging. When I threw the last ball to her, she let it go
by, hopped up on my ex-National Geographic blanket, curled up and went
sound asleep. I tried to waken her later for another game, but she
said no. delightful walk this morning. I believe she wanted to go all
the way to Knoxville. Everything is so fresh and green, but we did
notice some leaves turning on the fourth floor of the Old Crow
Motel—could be due to old age. Life goes on.....

Saturday; sunny warm days, clear cool nights, and low humidity levels. We
will begin with early morning temperatures in the upper 50s, and the mercury
will peak somewhere in the 80s. Sunday will be rain-free as well, but
humidity levels will be on the rise and a few scattered clouds will show up
by afternoon. The weather by Sunday will also feel a little more like summer
with high temperatures near the 90 degree mark.

NEXT WEEK: We will bring back the chance of showers and storms Monday
afternoon, Monday night, and into Tuesday thanks to a cold front moving into
the state from the northwest. That front will be trailing a major early
season winter storm, that promises to dump lots of snow on the northern
Rockies, and into the Dakotas. This will be quite a shock since temperatures
in that region will be well into the 80s this afternoon. Once the front
passes through Alabama, we will enjoy cooler air by the middle of next week,
with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Some of the cooler valleys might
even reach the 40s.

TOPIC: TROPICS: Hurricane Gordon is now a powerful storm packing sustained
winds of over 110 mph, but the system is basically in the middle of nowhere,
in the central Atlantic. Gordon is moving slowly to the northeast, and is no
threat to land. Tropical depression eight should become Tropical Storm
Helene today in the far eastern Atlantic, but it looks like this one has a
good chance of turning northward into the open Atlantic long before getting
close to the U.S. mainland. And, a tropical wave is moving through the
eastern Caribbean with no sign of organization, and upper air winds don’t
look favorable for development today.

EL NINO RETURNS: Scientists at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center reported
yesterday that El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and
are likely to continue into early 2007. The development of weak El Niño
conditions helps explain why this Atlantic hurricane season has been less
active than was previously expected. El Niño typically acts to suppress
hurricane activity by increasing the vertical wind shear over the Caribbean
Sea region.

Typical El Niño effects are likely to develop over North America during the
upcoming winter season. Those include warmer-than-average temperatures over
western and central Canada, and over the western and northern United States.
Wetter-than-average conditions are likely over portions of the U.S. Gulf
Coast and Florida, while drier-than-average conditions can be expected in
the Ohio Valley and the Pacific Northwest.

GREAT WEATHER THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A cold front acted like it was
hiding in the woods this morning, but it is slowly spreading cooler
and drier air down across Alabama from the NW. A few showers developed
early this afternoon in SW Alabama, mainly in the Demopolis-Camden
area. Those will end early this evening.

With all the ground level moisture and the sky trying to clear
overnight, look for patchy fog to develop late tonight and early
tomorrow morning. Bright sunshine will be the order of the day for
Thursday and you will feel a noticeable drop in the humidity. The dry
weather will continue all the way through Sunday with lots of sunshine
and mostly clear, cool nights. For the next two nights, we are
forecasting lows in the upper 50s. Some of those cool spots, like good
old Valley Head, could drop as low as 50-52.

That was a big rain event for Alabama in the last 24-36 hours. It
appeared that every square mile of the state received rain. Numerous
communities received over 2 inches. There is a complete list on the
33/40 blog. Some of the heavier rain was in Central Alabama with as
much as 6 inches in the Childersburg area. This was our most
widespread soaking rain probably since Hurricane Ivan.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: Scattered showers and thunderstorms later Monday
and continuing into early Tuesday. By next Wednesday, the long range
outlook is for another surge of cooler air to spread across Alabama.

OUR TROPICAL WORLD: Not much to worry about for the USA for the
moment. Hurricane Gordon was way out in the mid Atlantic by himself
and only causing headaches to the fishes of the sea. He should stay
out in the open Atlantic as he curves NE. Florence is no longer a
hurricane and the remnants was passing south of Newfoundland. The
newer tropical depression #8 was way out in the Eastern Atlantic.
Early indications are this one will not bother us either.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Colder air mobilizing in Canada will bring the
first snow of the season down into the USA North and Central Rockies
over the next several days. There will almost certainly be some
accumulations in the higher elevations of Yellowstone National Park.
The first snow is expected to develop in the mountains of Northern
Utah Friday night. Over the weekend, there will probably be some
thunder-snow in places like Vail and Aspen in the Colorado high
country…coldest temperature this morning was 26 at Embarrass, Minn. It
was in the low 20s in Northern Canada.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Horrors! Two of our neighbors across
the street noticed damage to their yard. It turned out to be an
armadillo. I do not know much about them, but my wife was raised
around them in the Arizona desert. I can imagine what would happen if
Little Miss Molly meets that armadillo on the walking track after
dark. She will surely think it is super rabbit and will take off after
it like a rocket. I must be real careful. I understand that they move
very slowly and will curl up to protect themselves if noisy Molly
approaches. Life goes on.

...Rain Moves Out Today...

I didn't hear one person complaining about the rain yesterday. It was a
good, statewide soaking; just what the doctor ordered after a long, hot
summer. This morning a surface cold front will sweep through the state, and
any lingering showers will end from west to east as drier air rolls in on a
fresh northwest breeze. Sunshine will increase this afternoon as the clouds
erode, and we should be completely clear tonight, which should allow the
mercury to drop into the upper 50s by daybreak tomorrow morning. Some of the
cooler locations across North Alabama night even reach the low to mid 50s.

The weather looks very nice for the end of the week and the weekend; mostly
sunny warm days and clear cool nights. The humidity will remain low on
Friday, but levels will begin to creep upward over the weekend as the winds
veer around to the south by Sunday. Needless to say, we sure don't expect
any weather problems for high school and college football games over the
weekend. Looks like the next chance of rain will come late Monday, Monday
night, and possibly Tuesday of next week.

TROPICS: Hurricane Florence is now an extra-tropical storm in the northern
Atlantic, and it battered the Canadian Maritimes last night with lots of
wind and rain. Tropical Storm Gordon, in the central Atlantic, will probably
become a hurricane today, but it is moving very slowly northward over the
middle of the ocean and is no threat to land. And, in the far eastern
Atlantic, tropical depression eight is expected to become Tropical Storm
Helene this morning. All of the computer models turn Helene to the right in
a few days, which means it will be like Gordon and should not be a threat to
any land area. The Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, for now, are quiet.

SUPER SOAKING: Here is a list of some rain totals from across Alabama
yesterday: 2.21" at Childersburg, 2.06" at Carbon Hill, 1.86" at Sylacauga,
1.72" at Cheaha State Park, 1.70" at Columbiana, 1.68" at Jasper, 1.53" at
Jemison, 1.40" at the ABC 33/40 Studio in Riverchase, 1.34" at Inverness,
1.26" at Morris, 1.23" at Gulf Shores, 1.21" at Gardendale, and 1.10" at
Greystone Cove (Shelby County). The greatest rain total we could find was at
the Shelby County Airport in Calera, where the National Weather Service
measured 3.15". The clouds and rain also kept temperatures down; the high at
our SKYCAM site atop Mt. Cheaha was only 70 degrees, and the mercury hovered
in the 60s most of the day with very limited visibility and a soaking rain.
Our online weather watcher in Vinemont, north of Cullman, also reported a
high of only 70 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Shortly after midnight, the eye of Hurricane Frederic
passed over Dauphin Island and then made landfall on the Alabama coast near
Bayou La Batre. Peak wind gusts over 135 mph were felt along the Alabama
coastline, and hurricane force gusts were felt as far inland as Choctaw
County.

VERY PLEASANT WEATHER COMING UP: Just what the doctor ordered—a
widespread rain event in Alabama overnight and today, especially
across the north and central portions. It was a big plus that it was a
long drawn out steady rain. Numerous counties got a good soaking and
this is exactly the type rain event everyone has been asking for.

At mid afternoon, rain was still widespread, especially over a large
part of North and Central Alabama. The thick cloud cover and steady
rain held afternoon temperatures into the 60s over much of North
Alabama. It was not too long ago that we were fretting over 95-102
temperatures.

A cool front will be coming through Alabama tonight and tomorrow
morning. This will put an end to the rain and usher in some of the
nicest weather you could honestly ask for. By tomorrow afternoon, most
places will be getting sunshine. Thursday, all the way through the
weekend, should be mostly sunshine and cool nights and much lower
humidity. We expect upper 50s Thursday and Friday mornings. Could even
have some lows near 52 in the North Alabama valleys. Looks great for
Friday night high school football and Saturday college football.

We want to list some rainfall amounts so far today. They are
very impressive: 3.30 inches near Winfield, 2.00 in Fayette, 1.03 in
Riverchase (33/40 studios).

THE TROPICAL WORLD: Florence was more than 600 miles SW of Cape
Race, Newfoundland losing her tropical bloodline and will pass just SE
of Newfoundland in the next day or so. Tropical Storm Gordon was 490
miles NNE of the Leeward Islands. He should curve north over the open
Atlantic and take a track even further east than Florence. TD #8 was
way out in the Eastern Atlantic and will probably take a more
southerly track.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: A cold 19 degrees this morning at Swan Lake,
Montana for the national low…it was 25 at West Yellowstone, Montana
and the hottest yesterday was 112 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure lucky to get in a full half-mile
walk with Little Miss Molly before the steady rain started. No sooner
than we were out the door than she heard a familiar voice. It was
Jo-Jo. We had not seen him in months. He is that beautiful white dog
that lives on the other side of the hedgerow that Molly wanted to
marry. She could not see him until I picked her up and showed her to
Jo-Jo through an opening in the hedgerow. She got so excited she was
shaking…I put her down and we headed north. The community cat came
flying out of the hedgerow like a bullet and shot up a tree. Sure glad
Molly did not see that. Life goes on.

...Good Soaking Ahead...

Get set for the first widespread soaking in a while for Alabama. A strong
storm system, combined with a good supply of low level moisture, will mean
rain and thunderstorms statewide, with most spots getting one to two inches
of rain. The rain should become widespread this afternoon, and will continue
tonight.

The rain will end from west to east tomorrow morning, and some sun might
break through the clouds by tomorrow afternoon. Then, we are looking at
beautiful weather on Thursday and Friday, with a sunny sky, low humidity,
excellent visibility, and cool early morning temperatures. We are expecting
lows in the upper 50s in most communities, but the cooler spots across North
Alabama have a chance to get down into the low to mid 50s.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend ahead looks rain-free, with mostly sunny warm days
and pleasant nights. Afternoon highs over the weekend should be in the 87 to
90 degree range. Humidity levels will slowly rise on Saturday and Sunday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Florence, which passed just west of Bermuda
yesterday morning, is moving to the north/northeast, and is no threat to the
U.S. mainland. The system should slowly weaken over the cooler water of the
North Atlantic, but still has the potential to bring lots of wind and rain
to the Canadian coast over the next couple of days. And, Tropical Storm
Gordon formed yesterday in the central Atlantic, about 400 miles northeast
of the Leeward Islands. Gordon will remain over the open Atlantic and is no
threat to the U.S. coast. Gordon should be a little east of Bermuda by the
weekend.

In the far eastern Atlantic, a good looking tropical wave emerged off the
coast of Africa yesterday, and it has the potential to grow into a tropical
depression today. If that one becomes a tropical storm at some point, the
name will be Helene.
The weather in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean remains quiet; but
understand we still have a long way to go in the 2006 hurricane season and
development there can't be ruled out in weeks to come. But, it sure looks
like a majority of the systems this year will stay in the Atlantic. And,
hopefully most of them, like Florence and Gordon, won't pose a threat to the
U.S. coast.

TWENTY SEVEN YEARS AGO: It was my very first week doing TV weather in
Birmingham, and on September 12, 1979 I was sent to the Alabama coast to
cover the landfall of Hurricane Frederic, a category three storm that would
bring major damage to Mobile and Baldwin counties. A large percentage of the
buildings in Gulf Shores were severely damaged, and that started the
building boom that continues today along the Alabama coast. Tree and power
line damage was extensive as far north as Birmingham. It is interesting to
note that Frederic was only the third hurricane to get a masculine name at
the time.

COLDER TIMES: Nights are getting longer, and temperatures are getting colder
across North America. The community of Wisdom, Montana dropped to 20 degrees
early yesterday morning.

...Rain In Our Future...

Today will be another summerlike day across North and Central Alabama with a
good bit of sunshine, lots of puffy cumulus clouds and then scattered
thunderstorms developing during the afternoon hours. Coverage of the
thunderstorm activity should be higher than in the past couple of days, with
the enhancement of an approaching trough and cool front. Those rain chances
should really increase tomorrow as the front approaches from the north. But
first.let's look at Florence.

FLORENCE LASHING BERMUDA: The second hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic
hurricane season is passing just west of Bermuda this morning. The storm
maintained its intensity through the evening hours despite a ragged
appearance on satellite. Tropical storm force winds were reported on the
island overnight and depending on the actual track, hurricane force winds
might be experienced this morning. 63,000 people live on the island, which
is a British territory.

We always refer to it as a singular island, but it is actually a collection
of over 130 islands comprising less than 28 square miles. Hurricane Fabian
killed four people and caused over $500 million in damage in September 2003.

OUR FORECAST: Some disagreement in the models concerning our weather over
the next two days. The NAM model is drier and slower. The GFS is wetter
and faster. Somewhere in the middle is probably the truth. Look for
scattered storms today, a little more numerous than yesterday and more
likely to the south. Highs will rise into the upper 80s again in most
locations. Clouds should be on the increase tonight, with a shower
possible. Tuesday could be a wonderful day if you like wet, dreary, cool
day. I love an old Peanuts cartoon where Snoopy seeks out Charlie Brown in
a pouring rain and thinks "September rains make me lonesome." But they are
wonderful. Temperatures on Tuesday may not get out of the 70s. So, bottom
line, look for good rain chances on Tuesday into Tuesday night. The front
may not pass through until Wednesday morning, so we may deal with rain
chances for part of the day then too.

REST OF WEEK: If the frontal passage is delayed, clouds may hang tough on
Wednesday, but they should start clearing by Wednesday night. Then it looks
like we will be in for a fine run of weather through the weekend as high
pressure builds in. Lows will be in the 50s Thursday morning. Temperatures
will be near normal into the weekend under mostly sunny skies.

ON THIS DATE IN 1873: Father Benito Vines of the Royal College of Belen in
Havana, Cuba issued the first recorded hurricane warning on this date,
warning
of a severe hurricane that would strike the southern coast of Cuba. The
warning, given two days in advance of the storm, saved many lives. Vines
would become known as "Father Hurricane," and his contributions to the study
of hurricanes were invaluable.

Weather conditions are deteriorating on the island of Bermuda this afternoon
as large Hurricane Florence sets her sights on the tiny nation in the middle
of the Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda is no stranger to hurricanes. Hurricane
Fabian passed very close to the island just three years ago with winds of
120 mph. Tropical storm force winds will affect the island through the
afternoon and overnight hours as the huge expanse of tropical storm force
winds envelopes the island. The storm should be at its closest approach
point to Bermuda at about 7 a.m. CDT tomorrow. Bermudans can then expect
three to perhaps as many as 6 hours of occasional sustained hurricane force
winds.

OUR WEATHER: Today dawned mainly fair and comfortable across North and
Central Alabama this morning. Morning lows ranged from 59 at DeSoto State
Park to 69 at the Birmingham International Airport. Most locations were in
the upper 60s across Central Alabama. A little fog was visible from Cheaha
State Park while a few clouds were over western Alabama. Skies should be
partly cloudy across the region today with only a slight chance of a shower
or storm at your location. Highs should top out in the upper 80s. Fair
skies will prevail tonight with lows retreating into the upper 60s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By tomorrow morning, low pressure will be over northern
Missouri. It will be dragging a cold front southeastward over the Plains
states. Monday will be a lot like today, with partly cloudy skies. We have
hints that shower and storm chances will increase just a tad. The front
moves slowly through the area starting late Monday night, setting off
showers and storms. They could be with us most of the day before the front
moves through in the overnight. High pressure builds in after that.

TROPICS: Today is the traditional date of peak tropical activity in the
Atlantic. We have already dealt with Florence. Elsewhere in the tropics,
there is a low about 600 miles east northeast of the Lesser Antilles. It is
moving west in the wake of Florence, and will follow her lead into a recurve
out to sea. Slow development is possible. The GFS depicts a tropical
cyclone developing near the Cape Verde Islands in 3 to 4 days. Again, the
trough over the East Coast will protect the United States and deflect this
system out to sea also. Tropical cyclones are designed to transport heat
from the tropics to the poles, and no better way for them to do than to stay
over the open Atlantic.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A lightning strike led to a $21 million Lotto jackpot
for a Wellington, Florida couple. The couple bought the ticket as they
shopped for a surge protector for their repaired television set which had
been damaged by lightning a few days before.
