PESKY CLOUDS: We often find that after a cold front moves through Alabama,
that clearing can take place quickly or it can seemingly hang around
forever. It is very difficult to forecast in some cases. Today the clouds
have hung tough, but drier air continues to circulate into the state and the
clouds should gradually break away.

Probably our best weather news is that we see little or no chance of rain
for the next four or five days and no extreme temperatures. Even though
colder air has been spreading into the state, we see little or no risk of
frost because we don't think the wind will diminish to calm, which is
necessary for frost. If you will check our day-by-day forecast, you will
note that we will have highs in the 60s until at least midweek including
upper 60s on Tuesday or Wednesday. Our chilliest morning should come Monday
when we expect lows in the upper 30s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Alabama-LSU game in Baton Rouge tonight (a 6:45
p.m. start), it should be dry and cool with winds averaging about 10 mph and
temperatures in the 50s.

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: We all know that the 1930s were known as the Dust Bowl
years. During those times, hundreds of farmers and ranchers in the central
plains lost everything they had because their topsoil picked up and took off
during howling dust storms. It resulted in a vast migration of poverty
stricken farmers and ranchers to other parts of the country. Many of them
migrated to California with much hardship enroute. Often they were traveling
by horse and wagon, others with cars that were often dilapidated. On this
date in 1933, one of the frequent major dust storms was in progress. It
darkened the skies from Montana to Ohio on November 12, 1933. The dust was
blown eastward and the next day there was dust in the air from Georgia to
Maine. It resulted in black rain falling in New York and brown snow in
Vermont!

SATURDAY NOTES: The storm that brought us a lot of rain early in the week
also wet down the Eastern Seaboard. In the last 24 hours, around 1.50 inches
or more of rain has fallen in Atlantic City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New
York, Raleigh, Richmond and Washington...the coldest temperature in the
lower 48 this morning was 4 above zero at Saranac Lake, New York. That is
the second time this week that scenic area of Upstate New York has been the
coldest in the country. It will be zero to 10 tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A very busy and frustrating day in my weather
office and it has caused Molly to be perplexed. My son has been here all day
troubleshooting major problems with my computer. He and I have always talked
gruffly with each other, totally in fun, but little Miss Molly is puzzled
and frightened by sudden loud noises. So, she has spent much of the day
cowering in the kitchen as far away from my weather office as she can get.
Steve loves Molly, but she's not so sure. Life goes on despite the
occasional doubts and fears.

...How About Five Dry Days?...

You certainly won't see any blowing dust around Alabama today. The entire
state was wet down with widespread rain the last couple of days. Places near
the coast got over 4 inches of rain and many parts of North Central Alabama
received more than 2 inches.

Cooler air overspread the area Friday. This will give us a nice present for
at least five days in a row with no rain. At this time, we expect the next
rain about next Thursday. Even then it does not seem to be a major rain
event.

A tough forecast question for today is when the clouds will give way to some
afternoon sunshine. We think that the sun will peek through by this
afternoon giving us a lot of sunshine from mid afternoon on. We don't see
any drastic temperature changes over the next five days. In fact, by Tuesday
and Wednesday, high temperatures will top out near the 70-degree mark. We
see no prospect of a freeze anytime soon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Ideal dry weather is expected for the Georgia-Auburn game

in Auburn this afternoon and for the Houston-UAB game in Birmingham at mid
afternoon. Temperatures should be in the low 60s at kick off and cooling
into the 50s as the game unfolds. Down in Baton Rouge Alabama will be
playing LSU tonight before a very noisy packed house. Look for fair and dry
weather with near 60 at kick off and cooling to the 50s.

SATURDAY NOTES: Around the USA, Friday's temperature extremes included 8 at

Sioux City, Iowa and 84 at Key West, Florida...heavy snow will be a problem
today over a large part of New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. 5 to 7 inches
will fall in the Panhandle. Amounts will be much heavier on the favored east
slopes of the New Mexico mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another walk with little Miss Molly last
evening and again we saw an unbelievable number of birds. It looked like
football fans scrambling down U.S. 280 to the Auburn-Georgia game. The birds
were dashing about like they had to meet a deadline and were singing loudly.
Little Miss Molly took note and we enjoyed the free concert. Nature
furnishes us with so much enjoyment if we only open our eyes and ears. Makes
life more enjoyable and life goes on.

A NICE STRETCH OF GREAT WEATHER: I believe everybody is ready for some dry
weather after a statewide drenching during the last two days. A number of
communities received over 2 inches of rain and a great part of the state
received over 1 inch. The Mobile area received 3 to 4 inches of rain,
bringing their November total to 6.05 inches. But look at their total for
the year so far. It has now reached 70.36 inches and that's a whopping 12
inches wetter than normal! There was also some flooding in the Pensacola
area where 4 to 5 inches of rain occurred. A few of the heavier amounts just
in the last 24 hours:

1.67 inches in Steele (North St. Clair County)
1.41 at Mitchell Dam (Chilton County)
1.71 at Gorgas Steam Plant (Walker County

WHAT NOW? The sun was trying desperately to erode the clouds this
afternoon. While there will be some breaks in the clouds at times tonight,
there could also be some patches of fog form. We don't look for predominant
sunshine until Saturday afternoon. From then on, mostly sunshine for Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday, chilly nights, but fairly pleasant afternoons. See our
day-by-day forecast.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school play-off games: dry cool
weather with temperatures in the 50s and wind should not be a factor.
Saturday afternoon Georgia will be in Auburn for a 2:30 game and Houston
will be in Birmingham for a 3:00 game with UAB. At both stadiums it should
be partly sunny with low 60s at kick off falling into the 50s. Down in Baton
Rouge, Alabama meets LSU at 6:45 p.m. The weather should be ideal-fair and
dry with near 60 at kick off and falling quickly into the 50s.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: For the second time recently, some locally heavy snow for
North and Central New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle...as much as 5 to 7
inches will accumulate west and north of Amarillo during the next 24 to 36
hours...warmest around the nation Thursday was 88 in Harlingen and McAllen,
Texas...places where you needed an overcoat this morning, were Sioux City,
Iowa and Wolf Point, Montana where it was 10 above and Nuiqsut, Alaska with
27 below...Wolf Point is located out on the barren plains of NE Montana and
if you don't believe the wind blows a lot there, try driving through when a
cold front is approaching...in 1990, 14 different typhoons hit the
Philippines. Mike was the worst and on November 12 he produced winds of 144
mph killing 436 people.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was great to be out walking in the cool
dampness this morning. Molly took her time, which meant I did too. For some
reason, we saw a flurry of birds-at least 100 after only seeing one
yesterday morning. That amazes me. One very pretty bird, multicolored, flew
down directly in front of Molly's face. You know what that meant-she took
off like a police car and almost jerked me off my feet...in a midnight walk,
there was a steady light rain, but it got heavier. At that point, Molly
looked straight up to see where the rain was coming from and several drops
hit her in the face. She bolted for home at breakneck speed and I was going
faster than a human should have to go. Life goes on and we have fun-fast or
slow. We cherish every day...after we got home another post-midnight play
session and Molly folded up at 1 a,m.

...Clouds Hang Tough Today...

After a good soaking yesterday, our forecast package will continue to
highlight a gray sky today with some lingering light rain or drizzle. Most
of the precipitation should be over by midday, but the clouds will hang
tough through tonight. In fact, the sky will probably be cloudy tomorrow
morning as we start the weekend. But, some nice breaks in the cloud cover
should be seen tomorrow afternoon, and the sun will be back in full force on
Sunday and Monday as the air dries out.

The bulk of the cold air will stay north of Alabama this time, but we will
have colder mornings by Sunday and Monday with the mercury reaching the
lower 40s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The big game of the day will take place down at
Jordan-Hare stadium where Auburn hosts Georgia. The sky should be partly
sunny for the 2:30 kickoff with temperatures in the low 60s, falling into
the 50s by the end of the game. Alabama travels to Baton Rouge to take on
LSU tomorrow evening (6:45 kickoff); the weather will be clear and cool with
temperatures in the 50s. And, in Birmingham, UAB will host Houston for
homecoming at Legion Field. Partly sunny, dry weather is our forecast for
the game with about 62 at kickoff, dropping into the 50s by the end of the
game.
For the high school games tonight, the sky will be cloudy but at this time
we do not expect any significant rain. Temperatures will drop from the low
60s at kickoff into the upper 50s by the fourth quarter at most stadiums.

THURSDAY SOAKER: Mobile measured 3.14" of rain yesterday. Other totals
around the state include 1.86" at Calera, 1.70" at Riverchase, 1.61" at
Gardendale, 1.54" at Greystone Farms, 1.41" at Cottondale, and 1.12" at
Inverness.

RAIN ENDING FRIDAY MORNING: Quite a soaking rain for a big chunk of Alabama
since late last night. As of midday, these rainfall totals:

1.80 inches at Birmingham Airport
1.85 at Shelby County Airport
1.46 in Greystone Cove (North Shelby County)
1.83 in Trussville
0.70 at Tuscaloosa Airport

This afternoon the main band of rain had shifted eastward, but the
precipitation is not over. A low pressure system moving east from Arkansas
will be pulling a cold front closer to Alabama. Therefore, we will be seeing
some more showers through tonight and possibly some thunderstorms. The
atmosphere is rather stable, so we do not anticipate severe weather.

As the cooler air starts moving in Friday morning, some lingering, mostly
light, rain will persist for a few hours. After that look for a dry weekend.
We could still have some cloud cover Saturday morning, but the sun should
break through later. Both Sunday and Monday should be mostly sunshine. See
our day-by-day forecast and you will note that we do not expect any frost or
freezing temperatures.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: In Auburn for the Georgia-Auburn game Saturday at 2:30
p.m., it should be partly sunny with about 62 degrees at kick off and in the
50s in the fourth quarter. Houston will be in Birmingham to play UAB at 3:00
p.m. Partly sunny, dry weather is expected with 60 at kick off and 52 by the
final whistle. Down in Baton Rouge, Alabama will play LSU in a night game.
It should be fair and dry with temperatures in the 50s. For tonight's high
school playoff games, there will be a risk of showers and temperatures in
the upper 50s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A hurricane hunter flight was originally scheduled today
for a disturbance about 300 miles WSW of Guadeloupe, which was causing lots
of cloudiness and thunderstorms over the Eastern Caribbean. It remains
poorly organized and winds upstairs are not favorable. There are a couple of
other disturbed weather areas, but no threat of development at this time.
FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: Old timers in the Plains, especially in Nebraska,
Kansas, Oklahoma and West Texas have always referred to a strong cold front
as a "blue norther." On November 11, 1911, one of those caused a huge
temperature contrast. Kansas City warmed to 76 by late morning. The
temperature fell so fast that it started snowing by early afternoon and by
midnight it was 11 above zero. Oklahoma City had a record high of 83 and a
record low of 17-all on that same day!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: No walking little Miss Molly today with a
steady rain-heavy at times. Her excursions outdoors were limited to a quick
dash to do her business and then back indoors for some naps and playtime.
Since she can't get outside for her "vacation," she has been insisting on
more attention to play kick ball, pull rope and you name it. She now has
about 15 toys scattered all over the floor and we have to watch where we
step. I went for coffee and stepped on at least three toys. But life goes on
even with the obstacles.

Wet weather returns to Alabama as our forecast package will highlight
periods of rain and a few thunderstorms through tonight. Rainfall amounts
should be in the one-half to one inch range for most places. Thunderstorms
should remain below severe limits due to limited instability and diminishing
wind fields.

The rain should end from west to east tomorrow morning, but clouds will
linger most of the day Friday as cooler air arrives with a brisk northerly
wind. Temperatures tomorrow will probably hold in the 50s all day.

THE WEEKEND: The sky should become partly sunny on Saturday as dry air takes
over, and Sunday should feature maximum sunshine. Early morning temperatures
are expected to be in the 39 to 45 degree range, with the mercury peaking in
the low to mid 60s during the day. We are projecting excellent weather for
Saturday's Georgia/Auburn game at Jordan-Hare stadium (2:30 p.m. kickoff )
with a sunny sky and a kickoff temperature of about 62 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Longer range model output shows another storm system moving in
here by Wednesday of next week, which could very well have the potential for
some strong thunderstorms. In the "way out yonder" category, the models are
hinting at a major pre-thanksgiving storm in about two weeks. But, lots of
water will go under the bridge before we get there; lots could change.

OKLAHOMA TWISTERS: At least six tornado touchdowns were reported in the
general region between Oklahoma City and Tulsa yesterday, but damage was
rather limited.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total so far this year is 47.87", which is
1.38 above normal. Our surplus should grow with the rain today.

VETERANS' DAY LOOKING WET: Wish we had better news, but it looks like some
rain will be reaching Central Alabama before daybreak and showers will
become more numerous during the day Thursday and continue most of Thursday
night. We still think the main showers will be Thursday afternoon and night,
but I'm afraid there will be a decent number of morning showers also. We
can't rule out a thunderstorm, but we don't think severe weather will be an
option. A good part of the state will get a nice wetting down from this
storm system. Some communities will get more than 1 inch of rain. We think
the general average for Central Alabama will be about three-fourths of an
inch.

What's causing the rain? A low pressure system swinging eastward from
Oklahoma and North Texas will pull a lot of moisture north from the Gulf of
Mexico. Already some rain was developing over the northern Gulf. Some of
those showers will spread northward through Alabama reaching the central
part of the state before daybreak. All of the precipitation should end by
Friday morning followed by windy and much cooler weather.

THE WEEKEND: Still looks great. Both Saturday and Sunday should be mostly
sunshine with highs in the lower 60s and fairly brisk NE winds. We now
believe there is little or no danger of a freeze over the weekend. Easterly
winds will hold up enough to keep most low temperatures in the 38-42 range.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 86 in Laredo and McAllen, Texas was the warmest
Tuesday...cold spot this morning in the lower 48 was Saranac Lake in Upstate
New York where it was a very cold 3 above zero. Temperatures over Northern
Alaska were as low as minus 30...9 inches of new snow overnight at
Breckenridge, Colorado...today is the 29th anniversary of the sinking of the
Edmund Fitzgerald. The big ship went down in the icy waters of Lake Superior
and 29 crewmen lost their lives. Gordon Lightfoot later wrote a famous song
entitled, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: Some of the coldest weather in the USA occurs over NE
Minnesota in an area known as the arrowhead (it's shaped like an arrow).
That area also has the highest elevation in the state with 2,301-foot Eagle
Mountain. (About 100 feet lower than Alabama's Mt. Cheaha.) The area is
heavily forested and it has such small towns as Ely, Tower and Embarrass
where frequently the lowest in the U.S. is recorded and we have all heard of
International Falls.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was a delight to be out on an early
morning walk with my little girl. There were just enough cirrus clouds
(which are composed of ice crystals at about 30,000 feet above the ground)
to make the sunrise more beautiful. Little Miss Molly has told me that she
wants to be the boss of the early morning walk, because she considers it to
be a vacation. I try to oblige, but I never know what to expect. This
morning, walking with her ranged from only 1/16th mph to Kentucky Derby
speed.. She got to rub noses with big Chester, a neighborhood dog. We didn't
see any varmints-not even a wasp, gnat, spider or mosquito. They have
thinned out greatly...naturally when we got home, another vigorous play
session. Molly had her treat and settled down for a long morning nap. That
little puppy has it made in the shade and I don't mind. She is a big part of
my life and adding 15 years to mine. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Tomorrow...

We will squeeze in one more nice today with a decent amount of sunshine
through high clouds, and temperatures in the mid 60s this afternoon.
Clouds will thicken late tonight, and we will highlight developing showers
for Veterans Day tomorrow as a storm system approaches from the west. Looks
like the most widespread rain will come tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow
night, with a few embedded thunderstorms possible. Severe weather is not
likely since the atmosphere is rather stable. Rain totals between one-half
and once inch are expected for most places.

FRIDAY: A new surge of chilly air will drop into the state at the end of the
week. In fact, Friday looks like a rather raw day with lingering clouds, a
cool north breeze, and temperatures holding in the 50s. The rain should end
from west to east early in the day.

THE WEEKEND: We still expect a cold start to the weekend, with temperatures
in the 32 to 38 degree range early Saturday. While many places might escape
a freeze, widespread frost seems likely at this time. Dry air will mean
ample sunshine on both Saturday and Sunday with daytime temperatures in the
60s.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like a good soaking for parts of Alabama toward the middle
of next week. The latest model data puts the primary surface low over Mobile
on Wednesday, which would mean little chance of severe weather, but some
very significant rain amounts, especially over south Alabama.

TWO YEARS AGO: Alabama's last major severe weather outbreak on November 10,
2002 was responsible for 11 tornadoes that killed 12 people across north
Alabama. Read more about this event in today's WeatherTalk.

VETERANS' DAY: The weather is beginning to look on the wet side for
Veterans' Day Thursday. By tomorrow we will be able to pin down the time
window when we think the chance of rain is at its greatest. At this time, we
believe the best chance will be during the afternoon and night. However,
there may also be some rain during the morning hours. Leftover light rain
should end early Friday and that's when you will feel the new season more
than ever. High temperatures on Friday will only be in the upper 50s as
compared to the mid 60s on Veterans' Day. Meanwhile, look for another mostly
sunny day tomorrow with highs around 65.

WEEKEND WEATHER: It looks great if you don't mind some chilly temperatures.
Look for mostly sunny Saturday and Sunday with highs near 60 on Saturday and
a few degrees warmer on Sunday. Lows will be in the 30s. We think now that
an easterly wind will be strong enough to keep us from having a Saturday
morning freeze. However, there could be some pockets of frost in the well
protected valleys.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: A moderate geomagnetic storm is in progress following the
arrival of a CME at about 3:30 this morning. The ongoing storm is mild
compared to the extreme one just two days ago when auroras were visible as
far south as Alabama and California.

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: At times when I sit here and stare into my computer
screen and wondering who is on the other side making faces at me, my little
mind wanders afar. Today I was wondering if we could pump all the water out
of the Gulf of Mexico and spread it evenly over the USA how deep would it
be. I have no idea, but I know we would all drown. Bodies of water contain a
whole lot more water than we think. It has been estimated that if all of
Lake Tahoe could be drained, that water would cover all of California to a
depth of more than one foot.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 86 in Laredo and McAllen, Texas was the hottest
yesterday...this morning it was 12 in Fryeburg and Sanford, Maine...in
Alaska, it was a very cold 35 below at Chandalar Lake and Arctic
Village...it was 30 below in good old Deadhorse.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Every time I go from my weather office to the
kitchen to get another cup of Maxwell House, I have to walk behind the
couch. Little Miss Molly hears my chair squeak when I get up and she will
immediately jump on the back of the couch expecting a 30-second love session
when I go by. Of course, I oblige. She and I went out late last night hoping
to see the northern lights. No luck. Then we had one of the most vigorous
and long lasting play sessions of her lifetime. I took some of her toys and
we both got on the king-sized bed. It turned into a boxing ring, wrestling
pad and play pen all in one. For 30 minutes we romped. She would go to the
foot of the bed and then charge me like a rhino, grab my wrist in her teeth
but not enough to hurt. After 30 minutes, I said, Time to go night-night,
Molly." She immediately turned around six times, plopped down and was asleep
in 30 seconds. Just another ending to my day in Our Tiny Corner of the
World. We love it.

...Fine Fall Weather Continues...

Beautiful weather will continue across Alabama today following a new
surge of cool, dry air that arrived yesterday. Afternoon temperatures will
be about five degrees cooler today, with the mercury rising into the mid 60s
in most places.

CHANGES AHEAD: To the west, we continue to watch an upper low over
the four corners region. This system will continue to move in our direction,
and we expect to see an increase in clouds by Thursday, and the possibility
of showers as early as Thursday afternoon. We will forecast a good chance of
rain at times and possibly a thunderstorm Thursday night as a sharp cold
front passes through the state. We don't expect any severe weather since the
air will be relatively stable and the best dynamic support will be north of
Alabama Thursday night.

Friday should be a rather blustery day, with lingering clouds, a
chilly north breeze, and temperatures struggling to reach the mid 50s. Any
leftover rain should end early in the day.

WEEKEND PEEK: We are projecting low temperatures in the 30 to 35
degree range across most of north and central Alabama early Saturday. This,
of course, means the colder spots could see a light freeze, with widespread
frost likely.

For Saturday and Sunday we expect ample sunshine with cool
temperatures. Despite total sunshine, we should remain below 60 all day on
Saturday.

Another system should affect Alabama in about a week, with rain
likely by Monday night and Tuesday (November 15-16).

ALASKA CHILL: Bitterly cold air covers much of Alaska. Arctic
Village dropped to -35 yesterday morning, while the high yesterday afternoon
in Fairbanks was zero.

COOL AIR SWEEPING IN: Cooler and much drier air was sweeping across Alabama
rapidly today, but we can expect even colder weather toward the end of the
week. Sandwiched in between will be some showers later Thursday and Thursday
night.

The dew point had dropped into the mid and low 20s across extreme North
Alabama this afternoon. This is going to lead to a night where there will be
a wide variation in low temperatures. We think the low across Central
Alabama will average about 38 because the wind will not completely die down.

However, in some of the nooks and crannies protected from the wind, there
could easily be some 32-34-degree lows.

Another sunny day Tuesday with highs only in the mid 60s. Wednesday will
also be dry, but showers will arrive by Thursday afternoon and increasing at
night. We are very impressed by a very strong high pressure system for so
early in the season that will be pushing down this way Friday and Saturday
with a central pressure near 1040 millibars. This may bring us a temperature
near freezing Saturday and Sunday morning.

EARLY LOOK-GEORGIA AT AUBURN: One of the most anticipated games of the year
will be in Auburn Saturday as Georgia comes to town. Early indications are
for great football weather with all sunshine but with temperatures at kick
off only in the upper 50s. We will have a more complete football forecast
later in the week.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: Spaceweather.com reported a coronal mass ejection (CME) is
due to hit the earth's magnetic field and this could lead to another
sighting of northern lights tonight. An extreme geomagnetic storm began
around 4:00 p.m. CDT Sunday, although it has subsided today. Last night the
aurora was sighted as far south as Oklahoma and extreme North Alabama.
Daniel Lamb, one of the monitors of the ABC 33/40 Weather Forum, lives 12
miles NE of Huntsville. He reported that the northern lights were much
brighter than the last time. The sky looked like it was bleeding and the
horizon was a very light green. Naturally, if they do reoccur tonight you
will need to look in a northerly direction. Your chances diminish greatly if
you're close to city lights.

Bryan Glenn, who is from Birmingham, happened to be in Olney, Illinois last
night. He said the northern lights began right after sunset and it was the
most beautiful glow of red with lighter red vertical streaks. Directly
underneath was a horizontal section of blue. The sky was very clear and he
reported quite a show.

MONDAY RAMBLES: Extremely impressive precipitation amounts in the
intermountain west in the last few weeks. Today, in Zion National Park in
Southern Utah, all tributaries were running at very dangerous levels,
including the Virgin River...coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 11 at
Stanley, Idaho...cold air continues to build up in Alaska where it was 35
below this morning at Arctic Village and 30 below at Dry Creek.

...Nice Through Midweek...

GOOD MORNING! We received several reports of unusual lights in the sky
across North Alabama last evening. Since solar activity is at a high level
at this time, it is likely that it was a rare display of the Northern
Lights.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: This morning, our cold front has pushed through much
of the state and is over South Alabama. This cold front has already shifted
our winds to the north. Those northerly winds will be a but breezy today.
Slightly drier air will filter in throughout the day, and by this evening ,
dew points will be in the 30s. Temperatures overnight tonight will fall
into the lower 40s across most of the area under clear skies. A few of the
normally colder locations will register readings in the upper 30s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Strong high pressure over the upper Midwest is behind our
subtle but sharp cold front. By Tuesday, that high will sink southeastward
to the Ohio Valley. It will be in firm control of Alabama's weather through
midweek.

A cutoff low pressure system (cut off from the main upper level flow) will
be moving into California and the Southwest over the next couple of days.

It will weaken into a trough and generate a surface low pressure system over
eastern Colorado. By Thursday, double barrel low pressure will be over
northeastern Texas and over Illinois. Showers will be spreading into
Alabama during the day on Thursday. They will overspread the state Thursday
night. As the low moves off to the northeast, it will propel a cold front
through the state. But the timing of that front and the departure of the
precipitation associated with the front is up in the air at this time. For
now, we will call for cloudy skies, a raw north wind and a chance of light
rain on Friday. The raon should all be gone by Saturday. Temperatures will
be much cooler behind this system, but probably not a freeze, at least a
widespread one.

RECORD RAINLESS STREAK: It finally rained on this date in 1914 in Bagdad,
California, breaking an incredible rain-free streak of 767 days, the U.S.
record!

GOOD AFTERNOON: Whole lotta shakin' going on down in Greene County this
morning as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck at 5:20 a.m. local time this
morning about 25 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa. Lots of people noticed the
tremor, but no reports of significant damage have been received.

LOOKING OUT ACROSSS THE FRUITED PLAIN on this Sunday afternoon, we see a
weather map that it rather bereft of interesting features. Your eyes are
drawn to a swirl off the California coast. That is the upper low we have
been talking about all weekend. It is drawing lots of Pacific moisture
northward into Arizona and New Mexico and some of the high clouds are
getting blown across Texas on high altitude winds.

A shortwave disturbance is dropping through Missouri this morning. It is
shunting some of those high clouds across Arkansas, Mississippi and into
Alabama, but they will be inconsequential in our weather.

The shortwave will deliver a reinforcing order of cool, dry air to the
Alabama weather warehouse later today. This will give us a surplus of
pleasant conditions into midweek. Temperatures will average near or just
below normal through much of the coming week.

OUR NEXT WEATHERMAKER: The big upper low over the Pacific will move into
the Four Corners region early this week. It will weaken into an open trough
and move into the Plains states. As it moves eastward, it will push a cold
front towards Alabama. The Gulf of Mexico will open for business by
midweek. This will bring moisture northward, accompanied by more clouds.
By Thursday, the front will approach Alabama and showers will arrive in
northwestern sections during the afternoon. Those showers will spread
eastward across the state during the overnight hours. Rain will end Friday
morning, followed by breezy and cooler conditions. In fact, a freeze will
be possible across the area Saturday morning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1837: Hawaii seemingly should have lots of hurricanes. It
lies in the middle of warm ocean waters. It is the same latitude as
hurricane-prone areas as the Caribbean Sea and the Bay of Bengal. But the
islands are usually protected in summer by sprawling high pressure systems
that deflect tropical storms away from Hawaii. On this date, one of the
most intense hurricanes ever to strike Hawaii brought winds of 115 mph to
Hilo. 730 people were missing or killed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Shortly after daybreak strong thunderstorms developed
over a narrow, but almost stationary, east-west band across New Orleans, in
southeastern Louisiana. As a result, heavy rains persisted over the same
area until mid-afternoon before tapering off, and triggered flash flooding
across a five county area. Eight to twelve inch rains deluged the area
between 9 AM and 6 PM, and totals for the 48 hour period ending at 7 AM on
the 8th ranged up to 19.78 inches, between Lake Lexy and Lake Borgne.
Approximately 6000 homes in the area reported water damage. The rainfall
total for November of 19.81 inches at New Orleans was their highest total
for any given month of the year.
