...Lower Humidity...

The continued drought emergency headlines the Alabama weather
situation on this mid-June Saturday. Water restrictions are in place
across the area. Please conserve in this time of crisis. You will
want to check and see what specific restrictions are in place for your
locale as it relates to watering, washing cars, etc.

CITY STAGES FORECAST: We always say that drought is the most
insidious of the weather disasters, because it is accompanied by what
would generally be considered fine weather with lots of sunshine and
warm temperatures. But that is what we are experiencing on this
Father's Day weekend. That means nearly optimal conditions for fans
headings to the downtown streets of Birmingham for our world class
music festival, City Stages. There is a full lineup of diverse
musical acts for every taste through late tonight. Expect partly
cloudy skies this afternoon, with only the tiniest chance of a shower
or storm. Brian Peters is watching over the festival from his lofty
forecasting perch, and we will all keep an eye on the weather for the
event. Highs today and Sunday will make the lower 90s. Readings will
drop off into the 70s during the evenings.

OUTLOOK FOR RAIN: Our best chance for significant rains in some times
appears to be in the offing come Tuesday and Wednesday. The Global
Forecast System model has been waffling back and forth as to the
amounts and coverage of precipitation with our next weathermaker.
Yesterday's morning run looked really, really wet. The evening run
backed off a bit. Let's look at the morning run from today: high
pressure that is centered over the Southeast today will slide east
over the next few days as a trough moves into the central part of the
nation. Our moisture levels will really increase. Isolated storms
will return on Monday, but then it looks like storms will be rather
numerous Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest runs back off a bit on the
amounts, but still indicate we will have some good rain chances. The
model seems to be picking up on a weak frontal boundary that will
settle into the southeast and give us higher than average rain chances
through Saturday.

MAIN EVENTON THIS DATE IN 1992: 65 tornadoes reported across the
central U.S. on this date, the second highest one day total in
history. 27 occurred in Minnesota. An F5 tornado leveled half of the
town of Chandler, Minnesota, where one person was killed. It was the
only F5 tornado of the year in the United States. The Chandler-Lake
Wilson Tornado touched down shortly after 5 p.m. near Leota, MN,
embarking on a 35 mile path that lasted over an hour. The tornado
reached its maximum strength as it topped a hill on the edge of
Chandler, descending with hellish fury on a residential area. The
two-day count of twisters was 123, second only to the Superoutbreak of
April 3-4, 1974.

...Hot and Mainly Dry This Weekend...

Alabama has been under the influence of a weak trough of low pressure
in the upper atmosphere for the past two days, producing some
scattered showers and storms. Decent rainfall amounts have been
spotty, and even that will be coming to an end today and tomorrow as
we settle in for a typically hot and hazy Father's Day and City Stages
weekend.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Thunderstorms will be isolated at best across North
and Central Alabama today and tomorrow. That means the chance of
seeing rain at any one location is very small, less than one in five.
And any storms that do develop tend to be of the pulse variety. They
can form quickly, but rain themselves out quickly as well. That
means that no serious drought-busting rains are in the offing. It
will be hot today and Sunday, with afternoon highs topping out in the
lower to middle 90s for the most part, with a couple of upper 90s not
out of the question.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: Jefferson and Shelby Counties will be
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert today, and probably again on
Sunday thanks to Ozone. Expect the same tomorrow. This is your
excuse not to cut the grass this weekend, if it is growing at all
anyway, thanks to the…

DROUGHT WARNING: Areas north of I-20 are now all classified as being
in a top of the line, exceptional drought situation. South of I-20 to
US-80, the classification is extreme, and south of US-80, it is
classified as a severe drought situation. Scattered showers over the
past couple of days have provided some light rainfall amounts, but
deficits are so severe that it s going to take extended wet periods to
overcome the past three years of dryness. Some locations have missed
an entire years worth of rain in the past three years.

MORE GOOD RAIN CHANCES? Our confidence in the forecast for early next
week is low due to some model flip flops of late, but it does appear
that a good old fashioned trough may bring our best chances for
widespread rain and storms in some time late on Tuesday into
Wednesday. Keep your fingers crossed.

TROPICS WATCH: An area of showers and thunderstorms over the
northwestern Caribbean continues to be disorganized, and prospects for
development are not good in the short run. But, as the disturbed
weather drifts northwest, conditions may become more favorable with
time. This is certainly a climatologically favored area for
development this time of year, so it will have to be watched.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Spelunkers at the Carter Caves near Hitchins,
Kentucky were surprised when a heavy two inch downpour sent a surge of
water 4-5 feet high flowing through the cave they were about to exit.
One spelunker was driven back 300 feet in the cave and drowned.

INCREASING CHANCE OF RAIN EARLY NEXT WEEK: Wonder if Mother Nature
is beginning to realize what she has been doing to us? People were
cheering all over the state yesterday and last night at the increase
in showers and thunderstorms. There are increasing indications that
we have a better chance of rain starting as early as next Monday
night and especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, one of the
weather models that we tend to lean on the most shows a good chance
of showers and storms next Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday.

That does not mean that we will not get some earlier. We think a few
will show up on Monday and we expect some to affect part of the area
this afternoon and this evening. Scattered storms were increasing
across much of the state this afternoon and some of them were dumping
locally heavy rain—mostly because of their slow movement. Radar
indicated around 2 inches of rain had fallen around Alexander City by
early this afternoon and there were more strong storms in the area.

We do not have room to list all of the significant rain totals from
yesterday and last night, but well over 1 inch fell at Sylacauga,
Sycamore and at Shelby County Airport, just to name a few. Shannon
Reece in Gordo, said that her two children, Taylor and Nathan, were
so excited about the rain that they were playing in it like it was snow.

After today's storms, we should dry out Saturday and Sunday and
temperatures will go back up. Sunday will probably be our hottest day
with highs in the mid 90s.

THE DROUGHT STORY: The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor has
enlarged the Exceptional Drought designation in Alabama to include
everybody from I-20 northward. This means places like Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham, Anniston and Gadsden northward to the Tennessee border. A
big part of Central Alabama is under an Extreme Drought. It will take
a long time to erase the huge rain deficits across the area.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Along the Alabama-NW Florida coast,
look for typical June weather through the Father's Day weekend. There
will be scattered showers and thunderstorms each day, but still a
good bit of sunshine. The showers and storms should become more
numerous by Tuesday. High temperatures will range from 88 to 92. In
the Tropics, showers and thunderstorms are more numerous than usual
over the NW Caribbean and part of Cuba. However, the National
Hurricane Center canceled the scheduled reconnaissance flight into
the area, because the activity had become less organized and
pressures were rising.

MY TINY CORNER: I think my little girl is reverting back to her
youth. The little rascal is getting up earlier and earlier. She
immediately makes a sweep of the whole house to make sure everything
is in order, then she is ready to go outside. We were walking soon
after sunrise and it felt cooler. The 0.14 rain that we got yesterday
was swallowed up by the earth so quickly that it was like me taking
one sip of coffee. I want to tell a story early next week about how a
couple with two large dogs trained them to not be the least bit
afraid of thunderstorms. I will ask permission first. Life goes on.....

...Storms Remain Widely Spaced...

Once again today we will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms
across Alabama, but they will be widely separated. The best chance of
a shower or storm will come this afternoon from about 2:00 until 7:00
p.m., and the best coverage should be over the eastern counties,
closer to an upper air trough over the Atlantic seaboard. Otherwise,
the day will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the low 90s in
most communities. Some towns near the Georgia border might fail to
reach 90 again today.

OUR WEEKEND: Afternoons will be heating up over the weekend; we expect
a high in the low 90s tomorrow, and mid 90s on Sunday with a good
supply of hazy sunshine both days. You sure can't rule out a rogue
shower somewhere across the state this time of the year, but moisture
will be very limited, and with no upper air forcing it sure looks like
most of the state will be dry.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues to show a nice upper trough developing
from the Great Lakes southward to the central Gulf coast by the middle
of next week. This should drive a significant cold front down this
way, with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms by Tuesday
night or Wednesday. This system has the potential to bring one-half to
one inch of rain to a pretty good chunk of Alabama.

TROPICS: A disturbed area of weather continues over the Northwest
Caribbean, but the upper air winds are not especially favorable for
development during the next few days. Air Force reconnaissance will
investigate the area later today if necessary. The rest of the
Atlantic basin remains very quiet.

AT THE BEACH: About 9 to 11 hours of sunshine for the central Gulf
coast this weekend with only a few isolated showers. The sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a toasty 85
degrees.

THURSDAY'S STORMS: While a pretty percentage of Alabama remained dry,
strong to locally severe thunderstorms formed in scattered pockets
across Alabama yesterday. Hail to the size of quarters fell over the
southern part of Talladega County around Sycamore and Sylacauga. Dime
to penny sized hail fell over parts of Cherokee County between
Gaylesville and Spring Garden. Some rain totals included 1.23" at the
Shelby County Airport in Calera, 1.06" at Sylacauga, .47" at Weaver,
and .29" at Gardendale. Vic Bell, our weather watcher in Black Creek,
northeast of Gadsden, reported last night: My power was out for more
than two hours following the first storm that grazed me on the
southeast side. I watched it rain so hard for 10-15 minutes that the
side of Big Mountain was completely washed out....less than half a
mile away. I got a few sprinkles. Then another storm grazed me on the
other side and now a third storm is right on my doorsteps on that same
side. My total rainfall.....a trace. :(

DROUGHT EMERGENCY NORTH AND CENTRAL ALABAMA: There is somewhat of a
paradox in the Alabama weather picture this afternoon. A drought
emergency continues for North and Central Alabama, as declared by
Governor Bob Riley. However, the Storm Prediction Center has
virtually all of Alabama under a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms
this afternoon and tonight.

Just because we have that situation, it does not mean that the
storms will be widespread. Instead, a few individual storms could
become severe. There is probably about a 1 in 3 chance of your
location getting a decent shower or storm for the remainder of this
afternoon through the evening. As always, rain will be extremely
variable. If you are lucky to get under one of those storms, you
could get over ½ inch while your neighbors a few miles away may not
get anything.

THE DROUGHT SITUATION: According to the U. S. Drought Monitor
(which has become a household word around here), most of North and
part of Central Alabama are in the Exceptional drought category. This
is the worst of the five increments. Some sources say this a once in
a 50-year drought. Unfortunately, we do not see a widespread break in
the drought. In fact, the long range extended forecast shows little
chance of a complete turn around all through July. What is needed, of
course, are one or two tropical depressions to form in the Gulf of
Mexico and move inland. It is going to take a long time to get all of
the rain accounts back up to normal. This one statistic is as bad as
I have ever heard in my many years in weather. I am speaking of the
rain deficit for Huntsville, which is now over 50 inches since
January 2005. That is a full year's supply of rain that simply did
not happen.

THE REST OF THE STORY: After the thunderstorms this afternoon and
tonight, we expect only widely separated ones Friday. We may not even
see one on Saturday and Sunday should have more sunshine than clouds
and we have omitted any mention of a shower. They will also be very
scarce on Monday. The latest model run has backed off on the amount
of showers and storms for Tuesday and Wednesday. That was our shining
hope, however, it is still too early to give up hope, because the
next run may change again.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: This is strictly a have and have not
situation. The Central Plains, parts of Texas and the Midwest have
received way too much rain and now parts of Florida are getting good
doses. Miami had over 1 inch yesterday, while Wichita and Lincoln had
over an inch. There was 1.71 inches at Sioux City, Iowa. Cool spot
this morning was Yellowstone Park with 33.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal gave up on me last night
and about 10:00 p.m. she had the biggest ballgame ever. Only thing,
she did it by herself. She grabs a ball and runs all over the house
at breakneck speed, throws it down, grabs another one and repeats.
She was exhausted after about 10 minutes. About 11:00, I played
another game with her and she was pooped......

...Still Looking For Rain...

This article from the AP news wire here at ABC 33/40 pretty much sums
up our current weather situation:

Alabama's Senate delegation has asked US Agriculture Secretary Mike
Johanns to issue a disaster declaration for nineteen drought-stricken
counties in north Alabama. The request was made Tuesday by Republicans
Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. In a statement, the two Senators
said farmers, cattlemen and consumers are "on the cusp of losing
everything." The disaster declaration is being sought for Blount,
Cherokee, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Franklin, Jackson,
Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan,
Shelby, St. Clair, Walker and Winston counties.

As of today Birmingham's rain deficit for the year is 15.66", and the
rain deficiency in Tuscaloosa is an incredible 19.68". And,
unfortunately, the chance of widespread, beneficial rain continues to
look very small through the weekend. A few isolated showers or storms
could pop up during the heat of the day, especially over East Alabama,
but they will remain widely spaced and most communities will have no
significant rain through Sunday. Afternoons will remain hot, with high
temperatures in the 90 to 95 degree range. Some upper 90s could return
to West Alabama over the weekend.

DID YOU KNOW? 34.32" was the Birmingham rain total for the year 1904.
That was our driest year on record. Only 0.01" fell in all of October
and November. That is not enough to wet the pavement in eight whole
weeks during a time of the year that is typically very wet. 83.63
inches was the most rain ever in history for Birmingham during a
12-month period. That occurred from February 1961 through January
1962. There was a lot of flooding in Central Alabama in February 1961.

NEXT WEEK: We remain optimistic that Alabama will enjoy an increased
risk of showers and thunderstorms late Tuesday into Wednesday of next
week as rather vigorous cold front for mid to late June approaches
from the northwest. A nice upper trough supporting the front should
bring some Alabama communities over one inch of rain at that time.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 8 to 10 hours of sunshine each day along
the central Gulf coast through the weekend, with highs in the upper
80s on the immediate coast. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab last night was 86 degrees. And, still no sign of any
organized tropical storm activity across the Atlantic basin for the
next several days.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, CA with a sizzling 116 degrees. The high in Phoenix was 105.
Up in Alaska, the coldest spots yesterday morning were Deadhorse,
Barrow, Barter Island, and Nuiqsut with 30 degrees.

STILL NO WIDESPREAD RAIN: For the second night in a row, some big
thunderstorms marched down the east side of Alabama. A few spots got
enough rain to throw a party in the middle of the night, but take my
word for it the thirsty earth will swallow the rain up like it was a
sip of coffee. A few of those rainfall amounts: 0.82 at Wilsonville,
0.63 at Vincent, 0.77 at Hackneyville (in Tallapoosa County), 0.43 at
Childersburg, 0.74 at Montgomery Airport. The Storm Prediction Center
has nearly the SE half of Alabama outlined for a Slight Risk of
severe thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. So far, we have had
no thunderstorms today. It may be late afternoon or this evening
before they pop up over the eastern part of the state.

ANY BETTER CHANCE OF RAIN? There could be a slightly better chance
Friday, but not enough to crow about. Temperatures will be getting
hotter over the weekend and we expect few, if any, showers or storms
on Saturday or Sunday as temperatures snap back to the mid 90s.
Looking further down the pike, our better chance of getting rain will
be next week on Tuesday or Wednesday, but that is still a long way
off. We still need to remember that "droughts beget droughts" and
sometimes it is difficult to break the pattern.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Nothing expected in the way of tropical
development in the near future. It sure would be nice to have a
tropical depression form in the Gulf of Mexico and come on shore and
move slowly north across this area. That could give us many inches of
rain and still not produce a huge storm surge on the coast. That is
one of the main problems with a tropical storm or hurricane.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Severe Thunderstorm Watches are posted this
afternoon for about the north half of the Florida Peninsula, Eastern
Georgia, all of South Carolina, Central and SE North Carolina, all of
Pennsylvania, most of Maryland and the northern parts of Virginia and
West Virginia. In the Plains, a Watch for Central Oklahoma into
Kansas. I counted at least 27 counties with a Severe Thunderstorm
Warning around 2:30 this afternoon and, for a time, a possible
tornado was suspected in NE Florida in the Jacksonville area. In the
last 24 hours, Jacksonville received almost an inch of rain, Miami
Beach 1.63 and New York City 1.18.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is having a lazy
day, so I want to talk about a cat with the nickname, "Computer Cat."
Her real name is "Sugar Baby." She appeared on the back deck of
Dennis Altizer after Hurricane Katrina. Dennis is our Music Director
at Huffman Baptist Church and he is the only living creature in the
world who is more energetic than Little Miss Molly. The Altizer's
checked the neighborhood, but no one had lost a cat, so the cat
adopted them. She was expecting kittens. She delivered six. "She took
on the alias Computer Cat, because she would hear me go to the
computer and she would come running to the room, jump on the computer
desk and absolutely demand that I spend more time with her. If I
pressed the keys, she would walk across the keyboard and go for my
hands and then sit on the mouse. She even caused an e-mail to be sent
early by walking on the wrong key. One time she stepped on a Ziplock
bag, lost her footing and slid. She grabbed the one she trusted most—
her daddy Dennis." She held on for dear life and Dennis still has
scratches to show. Computer Cat gives Susan and Dennis a lot of fun
times and they love her dearly, just like the majority owner and I
love Little Miss Molly. That's the way it is with little creatures.
They have some kind of a magic key that unlocks your heart. Life goes
on and the scratches on Dennis's hand are healing.....

...Hot and Mostly Dry...

The great hunt for rain continues. North Alabama is in an exceptional
agricultural and hydrological drought, and one of the driest places in
the nation according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Quite frankly, we
are running out of words to describe the very dry conditions around
here, and unfortunately it looks like we will hang to find some more
words through the weekend. Any showers and storms will be very
isolated during the next five days, and the best chance of them today
and tomorrow will be over the eastern third of the state, closer to an
upper air trough that lingers near the U.S. Atlantic coast. Afternoons
will remain hot, especially on the western side of the state where mid
to upper 90s are likely again today. For communities to the east, near
the Georgia border, the heat won't be so bad. In fact, some spots
might fail to reach 90 degrees across Cherokee, Cleburne, Randolph,
and Chambers counties.

SOME HOPE: The primary American global computer model, the Global
Forecast System (GFS), continues to show a a decent chance of numerous
showers and thunderstorms by Tuesday of next week as a rather strong
cold front for June pushes into Alabama from the north, with nice
support from an upper air trough. Of course, this might change, but
for now we will hit the chance of rain fairly hard for Tuesday June
19, and keep our fingers crossed that we won't have to back down
later.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: The Atlantic basin remains relatively quiet,
and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend. We
do note that the Dauphin Island Sea Lab along the Alabama coast has
been reporting SSTs (sea surface temperatures) in the upper 80s over
the past couple of days. The Gulf of Mexico is getting very, very
warm.

AT THE BEACH: If you have a beach trip planned, expect about 8 to 10
hours of sunshine on a daily basis through the weekend with a few
scattered showers and storms. Along the immediate coast, the high will
be in the upper 80s, with 90s just a few miles inland. We note that
Mobile soared to 100 degrees thanks to a northerly, off-shore breeze.
That was new record high for Mobile; it beat the old record of 99 set
125 years ago in 1882.

HEAT PARADE: In addition to Mobile, Tuscaloosa also reached 100
degrees yesterday; it was their second day in a row with triple digit
heat. Birmingham's official high was 94, four degrees "cooler" than
Monday.

SUMMER STORMS: Strong to severe storms moved southward across the
southern half of Alabama yesterday afternoon. Baseball sized hail
pelted the community of Honoraville in Crenshaw County. There were
numerous reports of hailstones ranging from nickel to golf ball size
in the eastern part of Montgomery. A possible tornado downed trees
near Milton, Florida.

===================================================

MAYBE A GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN EARLY NEXT WEEK: We are jumping way
down the road here, because we think we could have some good news in
the rain department for early next week. Both aloft and at the
surface, things are beginning to look favorable for showers and
thunderstorms about next Tuesday.

Mind you, that is a week away and we may be grasping for straws, but
everybody wants a nationwide search for rain. Plenty of places are
getting the rain, but we are not.

Actually, a group of thunderstorms formed last night and moved down
the extreme east side of Alabama. Some of our rain reports were
missing this morning, but we believe that scattered locations from
Cherokee County down across Cleburne, Randolph, Chambers, Lee and
Russell Counties may have received localized good amounts. Columbus,
Georgia was drenched with 2.40 inches and they are directly across
the river from Phenix City, Alabama.

The overall weather pattern is setting up so that we could have
clusters of showers and storms that form out in the Plains or Midwest
and approach us coming south on I-65 or even from the NE on I-59.
When those events happen, the storms usually move along at a good
clip and they are usually overloaded with lightning. We do not see an
indication of an event like that right away.

The latest information from the Department of Agriculture indicates
that topsoil moisture is very short over 75% of the state and short
over 21% additional. Only 4% of the state has adequate soil moisture
and that is in the extreme south. While we are talking about
agriculture and farming, did you know that Cullman County is number
one in the state for the number of cattle. DeKalb County is second.
Madison County is the leading cotton producer with 69,900 bales
harvested in 2006.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTFUL: 12 cows were killed by lightning last
evening near Warrenton, Georgia. Well over an inch of rain fell at
Macon, Savannah and Albany as much of Central and South Georgia got a
drenching.

TROPICAL WEATHER: No indication of tropical development right away,
but Gulf of Mexico sea surface temperatures are getting warmer and
warmer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I saw a news report this morning that
dogs' fear of thunderstorms is almost universal. It affects dogs of
all types and all sizes. The report said that dogs can even hurt
themselves they get so excited. I do not think Little Miss Molly
would ever hurt herself, because she just slithers away and hides.
Between claps of thunder, she will walk slowly from room to room
trying to find a better hiding place and it is usually with me. I do
not know if cats are afraid of thunder. Life goes on......
