...Fall Back...

If you haven’t already set your clocks back an hour this morning for the end of Daylight Saving Time, now would be a good time. Hey, did you know that this will be the last time that Daylight Saving Time ends in October? Next year, it will end in early November on a Congressional mandate. It will also begin in March instead of April.

GORGEOUS SUNDAY: We are getting off to a clear and cool start this morning. Temperatures fell well into the 40s overnight. There probably will be a few readings in the 30s before all is said and done. We should experience full sunshine today and temperatures will warm into the 70s. How far they will go, that is the question. We will split the difference between the various model output statistics schemes and call for 74 degrees today. Under clear skies tonight, readings will fall into the middle 40s. Many area churches are hosting their Fall festival celebrations tonight, and the weather should be perfect.

PWW: It looks like tomorrow will be an even finer day, with southerly winds kicking in, sending temperatures a few degrees higher than today. Readings should be in the upper 70s for most locations. Skies should remain mostly sunny. With my perfect weather criteria in range, we will go ahead and issue a watch for Monday. Hopefully, you can get outside for lunch.

HALLOWEEN: Tuesday will feature increasing clouds as a cold front approaches Alabama from the northwest. Temperatures will start off in the middle 50s and rise into the middle 70s during the day. A few showers could break out late in the day across northwest sections of the area. It appears that the front will be running out of steam as it approaches Alabama and rainfall amounts will be light for the most part. For now, it appears that any trick or treaters will not be disappointed in the weather Tuesday night, although a few showers cannot be ruled out.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will feature increasing clouds as a cold front approaches Alabama from the northwest. Temperatures will start off in the middle 50s and rise into the middle 70s during the day. A few showers could break out late in the day across northwest sections of the area. They will hang with us through at least part of Thursday.

HEADING INTO WEEKEND: Much cooler air will spread into Alabama late on Thursday. The Tennessee Valley will experience a freeze Friday morning and much of North and Central Alabama will drop below freezing Saturday morning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A “super-cyclone'' slammed into northeast Indian state of Orissa, packing winds of 150 mph and flattening houses across a wide
area along the Bay of Bengal. Over 9,500 people were killed and as many as 10 million left homeless.

...A Beautiful Saturday...

As expected, we got off to a cloudy start on this late October Saturday morning here in Birmingham, but the clearing was not very far away, and by 8:30, big patches of blue were showing up overhead. Of course, western sections cleared earlier and eastern sections had to wait a little longer.

The clearing line had reached the I-85/I-65 corridor south and east of Montgomery by 10:30 a.m. Mostly sunny skies will continue for the rest of the day. A gusty north wind occasionally topping 20 mph is transporting in cooler and drier air into the region, but temperatures should make the lower and middle 60s with the full sunshine.

YOUR FORECAST: Under clear skies tonight, temperatures will fall to around 40. Tomorrow should be a beautiful day with lots of sunshine and highs in the lower 70s. More clear and calm conditions tomorrow night with headings some 5-7 degrees warmer than tonight. Ditto for Monday, with highs making the middle and upper 70s under sunny skies. We will go ahead and issue a Perfect Weather Watch for Monday. Tuesday starts out partly cloudy and mild with a returning southerly flow. Skies should become mostly cloudy during the day and an approaching front could lead to late evening showers, continuing into Wednesday.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 am local time tonight. Note that the spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time, since daylight is singular. In the spring, clocks “spring” forward. In the fall, we “fall” back. SO set your clock back one hour before retiring tonight.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be quiet. There is a tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean. This is the time of year that we must watch out for development in that region. This disturbance should cross over Cuba and then move over the Bahamas. I do not expect it to become a tropical depression. We have had nine named storms so far, including five hurricanes. Two (Gordon and Helene) have been major hurricanes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1846: A group of inexperienced travelers is caught unawares by a major storm which dumped five feet of snow on the Donner Pass in California. Their wagons and cattle are trapped along with them and only 45 of the 79 people in the party survived the winter. The group came to be known as the Donner Party, apart of western folklore.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A newlywed bride was swept to her death as she and her fiancée took photographs of tremendous waves from a ferocious Pacific storm at Pacific Grove, California. The storm generated waves up to 27 feet high. The powerful storm swirled offshore for a day before moving inland, pounding Washington, Oregon and California with the tremendous waves.

...Clearing Today...

It is a festive football weekend here in Birmingham as fans for both Alabama State and Alabama A&M get ready for the Magic City Classic at Legion Field.

We are getting off to a cloudy start, but skies should clear reasonably quickly. At least that is what we hope. If sunshine breaks out early enough, we should make the 60s. There will be a fairly stiff northerly breeze, making it a little coolish. In any case, the football will be great.

REST OF THE FOOTBALL FORECAST: In SEC college football, Auburn plays Old Miss in Oxford. Look for partly sunny dry weather with a high of 65 during the game. Florida International will play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Again, clouds will play a role in the temperature during the game. The high should be about 64 with 50s toward the end of the game.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS: I measured 1.26 inches of rain in Trussville. Funny, that was the exact amount that I picked up on Monday. Rainfall amounts yesterday ranged generally from three quarters of an inch to two and one half inches. The Airport here picked up 0.80 inches. In any case, it has been a wet October.

THE FORECAST: The trough that brought the soaking rains to the area on yesterday is lifting rapidly out to the northeast this morning. Clouds may hang tough for a time as mentioned earlier, but some clearing will occur. There could even be a little light drizzle this morning. High pressure will develop at the surface over South Alabama during the next twenty four hours giving us a clear and comfortable night tonight and plenty of sunshine on Sunday and Monday. By Monday, a decent southerly flow will develop once again and moisture levels will be on the rise.

HALLOWEEN AND BEYOND: A cold front will approach the area on Tuesday, but should run out of steam as a southwesterly flow aloft keeps it from passing through the area. There could be a few showers on Tuesday evening for the trick or treaters, but rainfall amounts do not look like they will be significant. The front hangs up over us on Wednesday, keeping showers in the forecast. Then a deepening trough will deliver a more powerful shot of cold air to much of the Central and Eastern part of the nation later in the week.

A SAFETY REMINDER: Daylight Saving Time ends early Sunday morning, so you will get an extra hour of sleep Saturday night. Here is a good idea:: when the time changes, you should change the batteries in your home smoke detectors. That way, you are always assured of having fresh batteries in them. Experts estimate that over one-third of the home smoke detectors have worn-out or missing batteries.

ANOTHER STATEWIDE DRENCHING: October is supposed to be the driest
month of the year in Alabama, but the weather does not always do what
it is supposed to do and this October is a prime example. We have had
another statewide soaking today and a number of communities got over 2
inches of rain. By mid morning, Fayette had reached over 9 inches of
rain so far this October and Helena over 5 inches. A few rainfall
amounts through 1:00 o'clock this afternoon included 1.96 inches in
Anniston, 1.74 in Mobile, 1.40 in Montgomery.

With a strong low pressure area passing eastward across Northern
Tennessee, there will be plenty of wraparound clouds and moisture.
Even though most of the widespread rain is gone, a few thunderstorms
may develop over north and West Alabama later this afternoon and a few
of those could be strong. Otherwise, tonight there will be some
lingering, mostly light, rain and drizzle. Clouds should hang tough
Saturday morning for a while, but we should get at least partial
sunshine during the afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight, some lingering light
rain or drizzle for some stadiums and the grounds will be quite wet.
On Saturday, in college football, Auburn plays Old Miss in Oxford.
Look for partly sunny dry weather with a high of 65 during the game.
Florida International will play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The high should
be about 64 with 50s toward the end of the game. In Birmingham, the
Magic City Classic is between Alabama State and Alabama A&M. About 63
at kickoff lowering into the 50s, dry weather with a decent amount of
sunshine.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A most unusual October continues across the
USA. Sure no signs of global warming currently. This morning there was
still 22 inches of snow on the ground at Nederland and Rollinsville,
Colorado. There was a whopping 26 inches on the ground at Aspen
Springs. Many other parts of Colorado are still under a blanket of
snow. The temperature dropped to 4 below zero at Antero Reservoir this
morning. I believe that is the first sub-zero temperature so far this
season in the lower 48. It was 11 below at Bettles, Alaska…a possible
tornado reported this morning SW of Purvis in South Mississippi.
Numerous trees were down. Trees were also uprooted in several other
South Mississippi communities and an 18-wheeler was flipped over near
Kokomo.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was sitting at my desk early this
morning and low and behold, the suspicious dog that has been seen in
our community strolled right by my window. I ran outside. By then he
was several houses away and walking up the middle of the street. I
whistled for him and clapped my hands. He paused, but kept going. This
is the same dog that injured little Jo-Jo about a week ago. This
simply means that we will have to retreat to a safe mode until the
Animal Control people can capture him. Little Miss Molly's bathroom
will get much, much smaller—mainly the backyard. Hope all this ends
soon. Molly still hasn't forgiven me for playing only one inning of
ball with her late last night. She fully understands when she is being
cheated in playtime. She looks at me with a cold stare and only wags
her tail slowly. I will do better. Life goes on....

...Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Today...

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND WITH COOLER NIGHTS: Fast changes continue in Alabama
weather and our worst weather, by far, will be today. A strong low pressure
system swinging eastward from Oklahoma and Arkansas will pass across Middle
Tennessee later today. This will be pulling vast amounts of moist air
northward.

Meanwhile, a cold front will reach Central Alabama late today or early this
evening. Our most active weather will be until late afternoon. Rain will be
locally heavy today and thunderstorms will also become involved. The NWS has
much of South Alabama outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather today
and a tornado is not out of the question.

This is a very wet weather system. There is an excellent chance that a big
chunk of Alabama will see the heavy rain. In fact, a rather broad zone from
South Mississippi NE through Central Alabama into North Georgia may receive
in excess of 3 inches of rain with some spots possibly getting near 4
inches. The showers and storms in Central Alabama should diminish greatly
late today. The weekend should be dry and we do not see any return of
showers until the middle part of next week. Afternoon temperatures will be
fairly close to normal for late October.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: While we believe that precipitation will greatly diminish
by late afternoon, it is not certain that all of the rain will be gone by
kickoff time for high school games tonight. Temperatures will drop into the
50s during the game and it will also be windy. On Saturday for college
games: Auburn will be at Old Miss for an 11:30 game. Partly sunny dry
weather with a high of 65 during the game. Florida International will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama at 2:00 p.m. Partly sunny, near 66 degrees at
kickoff, but in the 50s in the fourth quarter. In Birmingham, it is the
Magic City Classic at Legion Field when Alabama State meets Alabama A&M at
2:30 p.m. Dry weather with temperatures peaking near 63 lowering into the
50s before the game is over.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: What a terrific snowstorm Friday in the Colorado
Rockies and other areas of the west. Both Denver and Colorado Springs were
almost paralyzed and travel was highly discouraged. Blizzard conditions
occurred over SE Colorado where there were big snowdrifts. A number of
places received more than 20 inches of snow.out on the Plains, there was
blowing sand and a Tornado Watch for SW Kansas-a true mixed bag.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Neighbors at the far north end of the walking
track believe they sighted the angry dog again yesterday walking north. We
will have to go on guard again as we walk.certainly would not want for
Little Miss Molly to be suddenly attacked before I could grab her and run.
Several neighbors were walking with sticks. Life goes on.

LOTS OF RAIN TONIGHT AND FRIDAY—A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: The weather
map today is certainly not lazy and Alabama will undergo some
significant weather changes over the next few days, including a
widespread drenching tonight and Friday. There is a good chance that
many sections of Alabama, especially the central part, could get over
3 inches of rain in the next 24 hours. If Birmingham were to get 3
inches, it would increase the surplus for the year to 9 inches.

The main reason for this foul weather is a low pressure system
intensifying as it moves eastward across the central part of the
country. The low should be near Memphis or over extreme NW Mississippi
by daybreak and to NE of Nashville by nightfall Friday. Rain has
already spread into much of Alabama this afternoon. Not all of it was
touching the ground, but that will change as we go through the night.
The timeline for our heaviest rain will be after midnight tonight
through about mid afternoon Friday. There will also be some
thunderstorms involved. For Central Alabama, most of those will wait
until tomorrow. The Storm Prediction Center has about the south half
of Alabama under a slight risk of severe weather Friday from about
Tuscaloosa and Talladega southward. We look for mostly dry weather
Saturday and Sunday, although some patchy light rain could linger over
the north early Saturday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: It is not absolutely certain that the rain will be
over in time for high school games Friday night, but dry weather is
expected for college games Saturday, including the Magic City Classic
in Birmingham. We will have a more complete football forecast on our
Friday editions.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Big, big things going on in the Rockies today.
By midday, 20 inches of new snow had blanketed Idaho Springs on I-70
west of Denver. As much as 18 inches was on the ground in SE Colorado
where blizzard warnings continued…winds were expected to gust as high
as 60 mph in the blizzard area…there was 13 inches on the ground at
the Air Force Academy and 18 inches at Jamestown in Boulder County…as
much as 10-20 more inches will occur in the higher mountains,
including places like Leadville, Climax and the Pikes Peak area with
some thunder and lightning thrown in…cold temperatures this morning 12
at Wakefield, Michigan and 3 above zero at Arctic Village, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Little Miss Molly comes back from
the beauty shop, the hair has been trimmed from her face enough that
her eyes look bigger. That is bad for me, because she can look me
straight in the eyes and make me do anything he wants. Her latest
thing is that she can actually nod her head toward the back door when
she needs to go out. She can also wham the daylights out of that
little bell. Nice walk this morning and we were honored by a fly over
of 13 old crows. We consider them our good friends and we have a lot
of characters around the walking track…it is estimated that I have
walked 40 miles with Molly so far this month. If she continues to
reverse my aging, I will revert to being a teenager in about 10 years.
That should be fun. Life goes on....

...Another Big Soaking For Alabama...

Wet weather headlines our forecast this morning for the next 36 hours across
Alabama. Today will be cloudy and cool with rain falling much of the day.
Temperatures will have a hard time getting out of the 50s, so the stable air
means little in the way of thunder and lightning. Tonight, however, a warm
front will move northward through this part of the state, meaning the rain
will continue along with the possibility of thunderstorms. The rain could
become heavy at times tonight as dynamic support increases, and moisture in
the low levels continues to rise.

STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE TOMORROW: We will be in the warm sector of the storm
system tomorrow, so we will deal with more showers and thunderstorms. If the
can sufficiently destabilize, then strong to severe thunderstorms will be
possible tomorrow. At this point, it looks like the best chance of severe
weather will be over the southern half of the state, or south of U.S. 80
(Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika). However, a few could develop as far
north as I-20, so we will be on our toes. The wind profiles even suggest a
few isolated tornadoes could form where the air is most unstable.

HEAVY RAIN A THREAT AS WELL: This storm system has a connection with
Tropical Storm Paul, which moved into Mexico yesterday from the Eastern
Pacific. We expect rainfall amounts to average one to two inches between now
and tomorrow evening, but some folks could very well see over three inches
of rain, and some flooding problems are not out of the question by tomorrow
as the ground gets saturated. The rain will end from west to east during the
afternoon hours tomorrow as our storm system moves to the east.

A DRIER WEEKEND: On Saturday, morning clouds over Alabama should give way to
afternoon sunshine with a high in the low to mid 60s. Sunday promises to be
a beautiful autumn day with ample sunshine and a high in the low to mid 70s.
The dry weather should last into Monday of next week.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham has received a total of 50.10 inches of rain since
January 1, and the surplus of rain for the year is now at just under six
inches, 5.90". However, down at Mobile, this year has been very dry. The
total for the year is only 34.45", and the rainfall deficit for 2006 is a
whopping 12.06".

BLIZZARD WARNING: A major early winter storm will bring blizzard conditions
to parts of Colorado today; the mountains and the foothills are expecting 8
to 16 inches of snow. In Denver, the western and southern sections of the
city are expecting 4 to 8 inches from this major system.

WETTING DOWN THE GREAT ALABAMA COUNTRYSIDE: and its going to be an
extensive wetting too, with many sections of the state in line to get
a soaking heavy rain. In fact, some of the latest guidance suggests
that parts of Central Alabama could receive more than 3 inches of rain
in this storm system. The main culprit is a low pressure area that
will be moving out of the Southern Rockies across Oklahoma and
Arkansas. By midday Friday, the low should be centered near Nashville
and then curving NE. This is going to bring all sorts of moisture from
our main source region, the Gulf of Mexico. The severe weather threat
does not appear to be major, but about the south half of the state,
from about Tuscaloosa southward, it outlined for a slight risk on
Friday.

The timeline on the rain: radar indicated some patchy rain today, but
it was not touching the ground. The air over Central Alabama was
extremely dry—up to 15,000 feet. Some of that rain will start reaching
the ground tonight, however, especially after midnight. The rain will
become more widespread Thursday, continuing Thursday night and into
Friday afternoon. The most likely time for significant heavy rain will
be Thursday night and Friday morning. By Saturday, cooler air will
move in from the NW, but the clouds may persist until afternoon.
Sunday should be almost all sunshine. We don't see any major change to
colder over the next five days.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave 900 miles east of the Windward
Islands was moving west, but not showing much promise. Over in the
East Pacific, Tropical Storm Paul will make landfall on the central
part of the Mexican coast tonight.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The most sparsely populated county in the USA
is Loving County in West Texas. It is just south of the SE corner of
New Mexico and only 62 souls live in the entire county, which is about
the same size as Bibb County here in Alabama. It is a windy county and
dust storms are not uncommon. In fact, we had to find a motel in Pecos
one night just south of that county due to a blinding dust storm.
There was only one room left in town in an old motel and the dust came
through the windows and under the door. There were fleas in the bed
and even a grasshopper in the room. I got up and slept in a chair.
Next morning there were piles of tumbleweed against the motel…record
low of 38 in Jacksonville this morning and 47 in Orlando…lowest in the
USA was 8 at Embarrass, Minnesota and zero at Chandalar Lake,
Alaska…the same big storm that will wet down Alabama will cause
blizzard conditions late tonight and tomorrow morning over SE
Colorado. Both Colorado Springs and Denver could get heavy amounts of
snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I both went to
the beauty shop today—separate ones, of course. I needed a haircut
badly and Molly needed a trim. The minute we got in the car she
started shaking. She seems to automatically relate getting in the car
to going to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). I wonder if she remembers
trip when the vet took her motherhood away. She shakes with fright all
the way, but she is calm on the way home and jumps up and down with
delight when she sees her house…she had me out before sunrise this
morning. It was clearly the most beautiful sunrise in at least six
months. A layer of altocumulus insured that. No stick this morning. We
think the attack dog left the community.

...Another Sunny But Cool Day...

While Alabama should remain dry today, a wet weather system will get its act
together to the west of here today, and we should have plenty of rain before
the week is over. With a partly sunny sky, the mercury should reach the low
to mid 60s today, still about 8 to 10 degrees below normal for late October
in Alabama. Clouds will thicken tonight as our storm system approaches.

WET WEATHER RETURNS: A complex storm system will bring periods of rain and a
few thunderstorms to the state tomorrow and Friday. At the moment, it looks
like rain will fall tomorrow morning in advance of warm front pushing
northward from South Alabama. We might have a break in the rain for a while
tomorrow after if the warm front can get to the north of Birmingham. But,
showers and storms are likely tomorrow night into Friday as the main system
approaches.

It is interesting to note that this system will have some tropical moisture
along for the ride, coming all the way from Tropical Storm Paul in the
Eastern Pacific near the Mexican coast. For now it looks like rainfall
between one and two inches is likely statewide. The severe weather threat
for now looks marginal since the boundary layer will be rather stable.
Having said that, a few strong storms will be possible tomorrow night due to
the excellent dynamic forcing from the storm system.

The rain should taper off from west to east by early Friday afternoon, but
the clouds will linger into Friday night. The latest guidance suggests that
no cold air will move into the state following the rain; so the weekend
ahead looks very pleasant with a clearing sky on Saturday and a good supply
of sunshine on Sunday. Look for highs in the 60s on Saturday, and mid 70s
are likely by Sunday afternoon.

EXTREMES: The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Woodland Hills, CA
with 92 degrees. Coldest community early yesterday was Embarrass, MN with 9
degrees above zero.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Make plans to join us at the BJCC in downtown Birmingham
on Saturday November 11 for the annual Storm Alert XTREME severe weather
training session. The event runs from 9:00 until 3:30, and our own Brian
Peters will offer both the basic and the advanced SKYWARN training. I will
discuss the all new ABC 33/40 Skywatcher program, and after our show you
will have the chance to check out the 2007 Alabama International Auto Show,
our patrner for this year's XTREME show. There is no charge; just show up.
Anyone who wants to learn more about severe weather will love it; bring the
whole family.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: Our one hour special "A Decade of Alabama Weather" will
air on ABC 33/40 this Sunday evening from 6:00 until 7:00; we will look back
at all of the historic Alabama weather events covered by our group of
meteorologists since our station signed on the air in September 1996!

LOTS OF SHOWERS AND SOME STORMS BY THURSDAY: Our weather doesn't
want to stand still and more changes are ahead as we continue in a
progressive autumn weather pattern. It did not get as cold as forecast
last night, mainly because of a minor surface trough moving across the
area and bringing in some slightly higher dew points. A few spots in
North Alabama dropped below freezing. Just a few of the lows included
29 in DeSoto State Park, 30 in Black Creek and Gaylesville, and 33 in
Ft. Payne and Heflin.

This afternoon, some lower dew points were migrating into the state
from the north and NW. With light winds tonight, the temperatures in
some areas will be just as cold as last night if not lower. We are
projecting an average of 34 across Central Alabama with scattered
light frost, mainly in the valleys. Temperatures this afternoon were
only in the chilly 50s across much of North Alabama. They will recover
to the 60s tomorrow. Check our day-by-day forecast and you will see
that our main wet day will be Thursday. The NWS has most of the state
under a slight risk for Thursday and we believe that the stronger
storms in Central Alabama will be later in the day and at night. Some
rain will linger into Friday morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Still nothing going on in the enormous Atlantic
Basin. Tropical Storm Paul in the Eastern Pacific will weaken to a
depression before making landfall Thursday morning on the west-central
Mexican coast.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Spotlighting South Carolina. We often think of
Charleston and the low country, but NW South Carolina is completely
different. Sassafras Mountain, in the NW corner of the state, has an
elevation of 3,560 feet which is over 1,000 feet higher than Alabama's
highest point on Mt. Cheaha. That part of the state is even more prone
to occasional ice storms than North Alabama…some snow cover over night
in the higher elevations of Western North Carolina…a low of 13 this
morning on Mt. Mitchell and 17 on Grandfather Mountain…cold spots
elsewhere in the country included 15 at Grand Meadow and 9 above zero
at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly pulled a fast one on
me this morning. I was only 2 sips into my second cup of coffee when
she grabbed me and made me go for a half-mile walk. It was well before
sunrise. I hated to carry a stick, but we were still concerned about
the stray dog that came through Sunday afternoon growling at everyone
and attacking little Jo-Jo—Molly's wanna be husband. Jo-Jo is doing
fine recovering well from his punctured ear and leg…glad Molly got me
out early, because two old crows were resting in the Old Crow Motel
and talking to each other. First time that has happened in a long,
long time. We've got so many characters in our tiny corner that we
consider our friends, but we have not seen our CR (Community Rabbit)
in a long, long time. The autumn color has reached its peak on the Old
Crow Motel, but the leaves still look sickly on that old lady which
looks dilapidated and must be close to 100 years old. It is one of our
favorite places to pause on our daily walks. Life goes on and on and
on and Miss Molly gets more and more energetic. How long can I take
it? J B Elliott

...Light Freeze Possible Tonight...

It was almost painful watching Game Two of the World Series last night from
Detroit. In the third inning, the official observation was 39F with light
rain, a westerly wind at 15 gusting to 22 mph, making the wind chill a
numbing 31F. When the Series moves to St. Louis Tuesday night, it will be
chilly and dry, but showers may threaten Game Four Wednesday night.

FREEZE WATCH TONIGHT HERE: We are no stranger to chilly temps here, either.
Readings early this morning are right around 40 degrees. Even though we
will enjoy brilliant blue skies today, temperatures will struggle to get out
of the 50s. A brisk northwest wind averaging some 15 mph at times will make
it feel even chillier. As high pressure settles in over the area tonight,
we will experience the coldest readings since last spring. The average low
tonight across the area will be in the 34 degree range, and the usual
suspects will drop to near or just below freezing for a couple of hours
early in the morning. Consequently, the National Weather Service has issued
a Freeze Watch for the area. Protective measures for any tender vegetation
should be employed tonight. Wednesday morning looks about the same, maybe a
degree or two warmer, so that situation will be monitored also.

FIRE WEATHER WATCH:: In addition, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for
East Central and South Central Alabama for this afternoon. Low humidities
and those breezy winds will make for hazardous fire conditions today.
Again, expect more of the same tomorrow.

WET WEATHER AHEAD:: Showers may reach Northwest Alabama Wednesday afternoon
and will increase across the area during the overnight hours. A good chance
of rain and maybe a thunderstorm will be in place Thursday before a cold
front sweeps across early Friday morning. Drier air moves in for the
weekend.

ONE YEAR AGO: Residents of South Florida made final preparations as
Hurricane Wilma intensified and accelerated toward a landfall in Southwest
Florida. A shadow of her former Category Five self after her encounter with
the Yucatan, Wilma strengthened over the warm waters of the southern Gulf of
Mexico, returning to major hurricane status just before midnight with top
winds of 120 mph. Moving quickly, Wilma made the transit across the
Florida Peninsula in less than five hours. Category One winds were felt
over a wide area of South Florida and Category Two winds were probably
observed over parts of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. A peak storm
surge of nine feet was observed in the Florida Keys at Marathon. Damage
was widespread across the southern Peninsula, with blue roof tarps the norm
several months later. Damage in Florida totaled over $20 billion, making
Wilma the third most expensive U.S hurricane behind Katrina and Andrew.

...Light Freeze Likely Tomorrow Night...

You have to love October in Alabama. It may be our finest weather of the
year. Generally tranquil and dry with mild temperatures. I personally am
partial to spring, but I have to admit, October grows on me each year. This
October has been unusually wet with some fairly generous rain events. That
was a nice pop of precip Saturday night and Sunday morning with over an inch
and a half at the Birmingham Airport. And more is on the way.

FREEZE ALERT: Colder air has been flowing into Alabama all day on a brisk
northwesterly wind. Skies should clear completely tonight, but the winds
may stay up just a tad, and lows will drop into the upper 30s for the most
part. A few of the normally colder locations may drop to near freezing, but
a widespread freeze does not appear likely. Different story for Monday
night. Cold high pressure will settle in directly over Alabama and ideal
radiational cooling conditions and calm winds will allow for readings to
drop to near or just below freezing at most locations. A Freeze Warning
will likely be issued for this event. Monday and Tuesday will be nice but
still chilly days. We might not even get out of the 50s tomorrow with a
brisk northerly wind.

MIDWEEK CHANGES: Deepening low pressure to our west and retreating high
pressure will work in tandem to turn our winds around to the south by late
on Tuesday and moisture levels will start to rise. Readings on Wednesday
morning will be a bit warmer and clouds will begin to increase during the
day as a warm front moves northward across the area. Rain and few storms
will accompany the front northward. Additional impulses will ripple across
the area, keeping our rain chances high through Thursday until a cold front
sweeps across the area early on Friday. Rainfall could be heavy on Thursday
as the frontal system slows down and it will be a bit windy. Friday will be
cloudy, windy and cooler with some wraparound moisture also producing a few
periods of light rain. Rainfall amounts from this system could average two
inches.

HEADING INTO THE WEEKND: A large upper low will keep us cool and just a bit
unstable as we head into the weekend. Skies will be partly sunny, with a
chance of a few showers. Temperatures will remain slightly below normal. We
get back an hour of sleep next weekend as Daylight Saving Time ends.

IT WAS CHILLY BACK IN 1987: It was 23F in Pinson and 28F at the Birmingham
Airport back on this date in 1987. Both were the coldest readings on record
for so early in the season.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: The precipitation total for the year at Yakutat AK
reached 190 inches, surpassing their previous annual record. Over forty
inches of rain fell during the month of October!

...Wet Week Ahead...

Greetings from Dallas! Taking off from Birmingham at noon yesterday, the
first thing that you noticed was how pretty the changing leaves are. They
are a bit muted, but you can see a beautiful palette of fall colors. I
understand that the colors are some of the most beautiful ever in some parts
of the Southeast. Please post your leaf watching reports and pictures on
the Weather Talk blog, like Skywatcher Vic Bell, who says the colors have
really popped around his home in Black Creek up in Etowah County.

QUICK CHANGE WEATHER: The second thing that I noticed was a huge patch of
stratocumulus clouds over West Alabama. The giant cloud patch kept
Tuscaloosa and other parts of West Central Alabama cloudy through late
morning and held the temperature to the middle 60s in Tuscaloosa. By the
time we landed in Dallas, I looked at a visible satellite photo and, it had
dissipated rapidly. Once they were gone, the entire northern two thirds of
the state were clear as a bell. But clouds were already developing rapidly
to the southwest and those overspread the area overnight along with rapidly
increasing moisture. Showers moved in ahead of a cold front that is quickly
progressing out of the area this morning. Any lingering showers will exit
this morning and skies should clear gradually. Temperatures will manage the
60s across most of North and Central Alabama despite a brisk northwest wind.
Under clear skies, lows will drop to near 40.

COOL MONDAY: Readings on Monday will remain in the lower 60s again with a
cool north wind and lots of sunshine. As high pressure settles in over
Alabama Monday night, we will get ready for some frosty overnight lows. By
Tuesday morning, many locations will have recorded their first freeze of the
season, with widespread frost. Tuesday will be another nice and cool day as
high pressure holds on over Alabama. It looks like Wednesday will feature
increasing clouds with showers breaking out by late afternoon. Those
showers and perhaps a few storms will continue Wednesday night as a warm
front moves north across the area in response to intensifying low pressure
over the Central Plains. This will signal the start of a cloudy, wet
pattern that may last into the weekend.

WET AND STORMY: As we head into Thursday, a huge trough will be deepening
over the middle of the country, putting Alabama in a well developed
southwesterly flow. The flow may end up parallel to the front, setting the
stage for a protracted rainfall event. The good news is that it appears
that the front will be moving by Friday, putting on end to the rain. The
GFS hints at some two to three inch rainfall amounts. Friday looks cloudy
with a little light rain and a biting northwest wind followed by cooler
temperatures.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: The World Series game in Cleveland between the
homestanding Indians and Florida Marlins featured snow showers and the
coldest temperatures in World Series history.
