...Back to Seasonable...

GOOD MORNING! Was it just me, or did it seem really chilly yesterday?
Well for Birmingham, in actuality, yesterday and today's high temperature
readings, as well as last night's low, were just about normal for this time
of year. Temperatures will remain near normal levels over the next seven
days thanks to a large trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that
will keep the back door open for cold air from Canada.

DRY WEEK AHEAD: High pressure over the midsection of the country is in
charge of the weather over much of the eastern half of the Nation on this
Saturday. The front that brought us the active weather on Thursday is over
the Florida Straits between the Keys and Cuba. The high will stay in charge
through most of the coming week. By Friday, it will be stretched out in a
thin ridge from Maine to Texas, looking like some sort of weather superhero
named Captain Elastic. Our newly minted weather character will valiantly
protect us from an approaching low pressure system and cold front. That
front should overcome our high pressure ally late on Friday and push through
the area early on Saturday.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: With the Gulf of Mexico shut down for the time
being, don't look for much in the precipitation department with this front.
We will call for a few showers during the early morning hours on Saturday,
but that is about all. The rain should end during the day, with cooler
conditions and a breezy northwest wind during the afternoon.

FIRST TORNADO FATALITIES: Last year, the United States did not see its
first tornado fatality until April 20th, when eight people died in an F3
tornado at Utica, IL. Unfortunately, we did not have to wait very long this
year. An F3 tornado killed two people in Claiborne Parish LA and Union
County AR late Wednesday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1958: There have been four hurricane reconnaissance planes
lost since the practice was started in the mid 1940s. Three have been lost
in the Pacific, one in the Atlantic. A WB-50 from the 54th Weather
Reconnaissance Squadron on Guam was lost during Supertyphoon Orphelia
southwest of Guam.

BACK TO REALITY: After a long stretch of unseasonably warm weather, we now
return to more normal January conditions. This means lows for the next
several mornings in the upper 20s and afternoon highs in the upper 40s or
lower 50s. We see no chance of rain, at least into the middle of next week.
Most days will have mostly sunshine. That is a relief after yesterday's
storminess. Some of the heavier rain from the storms included: 2.37 in
Dothan, 4.43 in Highland Home and down in NW Florida, Panama City got 3.22
inches. The temperature reached a very warm 79 in Robertsdale Thursday.

FOCUS ON TUSCALOOSA: We chose Tuscaloosa's Airport as an example of how
exceedingly warm it has been lately. The average high for the first 13 days
of January has been more than 14 degrees warmer than normal. Yesterday was
the 15th day in a row that Tuscaloosa had highs in the 60s or 70s. The
thermometer has not been down to freezing a single time this January.
Tonight will probably be the first night.

DAYS ARE GETTING LONGER: Have you noticed that the sun is setting later and
later each day? When the big sun ball goes down below the horizon this
evening, it will be doing so 22 minutes later than on December 12 when it
started a later trend.

PROWLING ALL OVER THE MAP: Much, much interesting stuff happening on the
North American continent. Let's cover it in incomplete sentences to save
space. It was 70 in Baltimore yesterday and 62 in the far north at Saranac
Lake, New York...they will drop to 4 tonight...86 in Ft. Myers was
Thursday's warmest...coldest this morning in the lower 48 states 43 below in
Sims, Montana...the wind chill 55 below in Bredette, Montana...coldest in
Alaska 60 below at Chandalar Lake where the wind chill was 90 below...no
place to hang out the wash today...it is 60 below today in Mayo, Yukon with
a very high pressure of 31.04 inches...even up on Mt. Washington, New
Hampshire, known for the world's worst weather, it was in the 40s late last
night...this afternoon it was 15 with winds gusting to 75 mph and an
unbelievable wind chill...51 inches of snow on the ground at Grant Village
in Yellowstone Park. The east entrance to the park is closed until further
notice due to an avalanche.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Back to SOP (Standard Operating Procedures)
Ah, yes, that meant I was out with little Miss Molly on her first morning
walk. A nice, cold north wind (we love that). Molly had to stop by the
doggie bulletin board and sniff all around that certain tree. I believe the
community dogs leave e-mail messages posted there...a number of old crows
were cawing in the distance making great background music (or should we say
elevator music) I know I say this ad nauseam, but I can't say how much I
love Miss Molly. But I am saddened occasionally to get an e-mail from
someone who has lost their precious pet. Today I heard about a little dog,
Trixie, that a couple in Jasper lost last year due to multiple strokes. They
got a new little Yorkie named Gracie. She became a close companion and rode
with them on the golf cart and 4-wheeler in their yard and woods. A couple
weeks ago, on New Year's Eve, a neighbor's Rottweiler attacked Gracie. The
6-pound Yorkie had no chance against the big 8-0-pound dog. Our sincere
condolences. I don't know how I could stand that happening to Molly.

Following a day of rain and active thunderstorms, much cooler flows into
Alabama today with a brisk northerly wind. Temperatures will stay in the 40s
much of the day, but early morning clouds will give way to a good supply of
sunshine throughout the day.

THE WEEKEND: Dry and cool weather will highlight our weekend forecast, with
temperatures very close to seasonal levels for mid-January. We expect ample
sunshine on both days.

A fresh shot of colder air should arrive early next week, and could push the
mercury down into the 20 to 25 degree range by early Tuesday morning. The
air will stay dry and at this time most of next week looks rain-free.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: Tree and power line damage was reported in over a dozen
counties across the northern third of Alabama yesterday. Some of the most
widespread damage was over northern Lamar, southern Marion, and Winston
counties. The ABC 33/40 weathernet sites at Legion Field in Birmingham, and
at the Talladega Superspeedway measured a peak wind gust of 51 mph.

Here is a report from Gary Goggins, the ABC 33/40 Weather Watcher in
Starkville, MS: Early this morning, around 6:30, the cold front plowed its
way through the area, leaving some buildings damaged in its wake around the
Starkville area. Starkville's Bryan Field Airport along with MSU's Flight
Research Center sustained some significant roof damage after 55-60mph winds
associated with a squall line moved over the city.

Rainfall reports included 1.32" at Nauvoo, 1.31" at Hamilton, 1.29" at
Greystone Farms, 1.26" at Childersburg, 1.14" at Calera, 1.05" at
Cottondale, 1.03" at Jasper, .99" at Eutaw, and .90" at the ABC 33/40 studio
in Riverchase.

BIG TIME COLD: In Fairbanks, Alaska yesterday the afternoon high was 35
degrees below zero, following a morning low of 45 below zero. Coldest place
in Alaska was Northway with 60 degrees below zero. That bitter cold air has
spilled south of the Canadian border; in Fargo, ND today the forecast high
is only -13. The forecast high for Omaha, NE today is 3 above zero.

==================================================================

STORMS LEAVING, TURNING COLDER: It was a stormy morning and early afternoon
across Alabama. Severe thunderstorm watches and tornado watches at various
times covered most of the state. There were a number of damage reports.
Probably the worst damage was at Haleyville about 70 miles NW of Birmingham
in Winston County. Store fronts were blown out along Highway 13 in the area
and trees and power lines were down. There were also reports of homes and
apartments damaged in the Tuscaloosa area. Other wind damage occurred in
Lamar and Marion Counties. It appears that some of the heavier rain, based
on radar estimates, was up to 2 inches in parts of Lamar, Marion, Winston
and Fayette Counties.

Now we can look forward to some quieter weather. Cooler air moved in behind
the storms, but a cold front will be moving across the state tonight. The
leftover rain will gradually end before morning. It will be clearing, breezy
and colder tomorrow. After that, look for more dry weather at least through
the early part of next week with lows in the upper 20s and near 30 for
Saturday through Monday and highs in the low 50s.

FOCUS ON WOLF POINT: We chose that town, out on the plains of NE Montana on
US Route 2, as an example of how bitter cold it's going to get over the
northern USA. They are expecting lows around 35 below zero tonight and
Friday night, with Friday's high 20 below, but the wind chill tomorrow may
approach 55 below. That weather is typical across the Dakotas into
Minnesota.

THE GREAT NORTHWEST DEEP FREEZE: It just sits up there-a huge blob of
bitter cold arctic air and the pressure keeps rising. Occasionally, segments
of the cold air will break away and move south. We are keeping a wary eye in
case the overall weather pattern changes and permits a massive invasion into
the USA and even into the Deep South. We don't see that now. The temperature
is a bitter 62 below zero at Mayo in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada and
the pressure has risen to over 31 inches. It was 59 below in Northway,
Alaska. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 28 below at Opheim,
Montana...just to balance the story, the warmest in the USA Wednesday was 84
at Alice and McAllen, Texas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor little Miss Molly. Very little play time
with me again...when I got home from church last night, I have never seen
her so glad to see me...did not get in bed until after midnight, so there
was another midnight walk with her...today she has been semi-hiding because
of weather radio alarms going off and me busy doing so many radio
broadcasts...I may have left a false impression that Molly was not doing
well because she was sleeping so much. She is fine and healthy. She is
sleeping so much in the day and sleeping late each morning, because we keep
her up too late...I hope to have a big doggie baseball game with her this
afternoon. Life goes on, work or play, rain or shine.

...Strong Storms Tomorrow...

Warm January weather will continue across Alabama today, with most places reaching the low 70s this afternoon, twenty degrees above normal for January 12. A few showers could show up today, but they should be very isolated and most places will be dry.

While we enjoy a nice spring-like today, we will watch the weather to the west where severe storms should form this afternoon over parts of east Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

ACTIVE DAY TOMORROW: That strong storm system will move from the southern plains into Canada during the next 36 hours, and will drag a cold front through Alabama tomorrow. Wind fields will be very strong near the surface and aloft, and we expect a fast moving squall line during the day. This line of storms will have the potential to produce high straight line winds as it races across the state. While we cannot totally rule out a few isolated tornadoes, the main threat seems to be from damaging straight line winds.

COOLER DAYS: Noticeably cooler air will move into Alabama Friday and into the weekend. The longer range models continue to suggest a less amplified upper air pattern for North America, which means temperatures won’t be extremely cold, but they will be below normal levels for mid-January.
Next week, we will bring in a chance of rain showers on Tuesday, followed by another shot of colder air on Wednesday.

JUST LIKE SPRING: Tuscaloosa was one of the warmest places in the state yesterday with a balmy 77 degrees. In the Tennessee Valley, a passing shower dropped 0.53” of rain at Decatur.

CALIFORNIA DEATHS: The death toll in California is now 19 from recent storms.
