ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Morning Edition For Sunday January 4, 2009
===================================================================
HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

...Wet Period To Continue...

Our well behaved warm front did our bidding on Saturday afternoon and
moved northward. It prompted a few significant weather alerts and a
couple of severe thunderstorm warnings over South Central Alabama, but
nothing serious. The storms weakened after sunset as instabilities
decreased and the heavier rain moved into Georgia.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Low clouds and fog formed overnight and will be
with us through much of the morning. A cold front is approaching from
the northwest. The front will settle into Central Alabama today and
stall out, waiting on the next system. Temperatures should warm into
the upper 60s this afternoon. Winds will shift around to the west
after the front slides through. There could be a brief period of
temporary clearing, but it will be short lived as more low clouds form.

MONDAY: A new surface low will begin forming over Central Texas by
Monday. This low will move along the front, pushing our yo-yo front
back northward again, spreading rain and thunderstorms along with it
Monday night. The low will rapidly intensify as it moves
northeastward Monday night.

TUESDAY: By Tuesday morning, the low will be over northern
Mississippi. As it heads into Tennessee and Kentucky, a cold front
will push into Alabama. Strong moisture inflow will set the stage for
heavy rains on Tuesday. The presence of the warm and moist air will
also provide some instability and the proximity of the surface low
will provide a good deal of wind shear, and this is a recipe for
severe weather. In addition, the upper level trough that will be
coming though in association with the low may take on a bit of a
negative tilt, which can enhance lapse rates and correspondingly the
instability. We will be watching for a severe weather event mainly
across southern sections of the area, perhaps as far north as I-20.
The rain should end during the evening.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: As the trough axis slides eastward, it will
put us into a northwesterly flow, spreading cooler air into Alabama.
This will return us to seasonal levels for the latter half of the
week. Wednesday looks like it may be on the cloudy side, with a chill
northwest wind and cold temperatures. We should see clearing by early
on Thursday as high pressure builds into the area, but temperatures
will still be cold. Thursday night will feature a solid freeze across
the entire area. Friday will be a transition day as winds shift
around to the southeast ahead of our next storm system. Rain will
spread into the area Friday night again. Saturday will be windy and
sharply colder again.

ON THIS DATE IN 1917: The fourth worst school tornado disaster in
U.S. history occurred as an F3 twister hit the Choctaw Indian Baptist
Mission school at Vireton, OK, 13 miles NE of McAlester. The small,
poorly constructed building was destroyed. 16 people were killed and
10 injured. Some victims' bodies were blown 100 yards down a hillside.

...Active Weather Through Mid-Week...

TOO WARM FOR JANUARY: We have plenty of weather action in our weather
pot for the next several days. This includes above normal
temperatures, showers and storms, locally heavy rain and even a sharp
turn to colder late in the week.

As this story unfolds, we should get a jump start on rain amounts and
by late Tuesday, we could be as much as 3 inches above average which
is significant.
This afternoon, it was way too warm for early January. In fact, across
Central Alabama, the old thermometer was riding about 20 degrees too
high. A warm front was creeping northward through the state. As it
did, it permitted the dense fog that draped most areas to lift and
even the sun came out in places. However, it was still foggy over the
Tennessee Valley this afternoon.

THE THUNDERSTORM SITUATION: They were already pounding away over
South/Central and SW Alabama this afternoon. It was pouring from near
Mobile northward into South/Central Alabama. A few showers were
developing over the north half of the state. The Storm Prediction
Center issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for SE Louisiana and extreme
Southern Mississippi. It was in effect all this afternoon. They also
outlined a Slight Risk of

severe weather up into SW and South/Central Alabama.
The showers and storms will spread northward as the night goes on and
there could be some locally heavy rain across Central Alabama. Still a
good chance of showers and storms on Sunday. On Monday, we may get a
break from those at midday only to see them increase again at night.
Tuesday will be another day of showers and storms with locally heavy
rain and South Alabama could again be under the threat of some severe
weather.

WHAT WILL END ALL THIS: A cold front will sweep quickly across the
area at some point Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and you will
notice the drop in temperature. There could still be some showers in
progress Wednesday morning, but the high for the day may not get out
of the upper 40s, with NW winds to around 25 mph. Low temperatures by
Thursday morning will drop to near freezing. It is going to be an
active period of weather and, of course, we will watch everything
closely including drinking the midnight coffee, if necessary.

HOW ABOUT 62 BELOW ZERO: That was the temperature this morning at
Chalkyitsik, Alaska. That is extremely dangerous cold. The bitter cold
is more widely based across Alaska and NW Canada than it has been
recently. We do not know when it will decide to go on vacation and
head toward Alabama. No real clear indications of that now. Some other
very cold temperatures included 56 below at Eagle, Alaska and Mayo in
NW Canada and 53 below at
McGrath, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Driving around the area this morning,
some of the ridges were in the clouds, meaning near zero visibility at
times, but I still had a tailgater. Little Miss Molly seems so much
more content now since the majority owner is now home from the
hospital. This simplifies our life greatly and we hope it is
permanent. The MO is feeling much better. Life goes on.

...Good Rain Events Start The New Year...

SHOWERS MORE NUMEROUS BY TONIGHT: Alabama is getting off to a good
start with significant rain events over the next few days to start the
New Year. The forecast is rather complicated, because several things
are involved, including warm fronts, cold fronts and even some
upper-level disturbances. We will not go into that, instead let us
explain what we think will happen.

Starting this morning, low clouds and fog and maybe some drizzle will
give way to some scattered showers later. Those should increase late
in the day along with a few thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms
should become more numerous tonight. Those showers will persist into
Sunday morning and then decrease in number. By Monday, a cold front
will have moved through. There will be some scattered showers and
thunderstorms becoming more numerous again Monday night. For Tuesday,
a good chance of some showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday, scattered
showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the morning. We will have mild
temperatures today and Sunday, but turning cooler on Monday and a
recovery in the temperature on Tuesday to a high near 60. Then it will
turn colder again Wednesday and Thursday. Such topsy-turvy weather is
not that unusual in mid-winter, even here in the Deep South.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: It got up to 87 at Alice in South Texas
yesterday afternoon. They have had a number of days with unusually
warm weather in the last couple of weeks. One day it reached 91 at a
lower Rio Grande location. Coldest yesterday morning was 23 below zero
at Grand Forks, North Dakota. Still a lot of bitter cold air over the
Far North country, including Alaska and NW Canada. The low was 56
below zero at Chalkyitsik, Alaska. A number of places reported 5 below
and colder.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am subbing for Bill Murray this
morning, therefore I can talk about Little Miss Molly again. The MO
(Majority Owner) was released from the hospital yesterday after 10
days and she is doing much better. I wish you could have heard Little
Miss Molly when she walked in the door. Her welcome home bark rattled
the windowpanes. She was jumping up and down with joy. Sounded like
she was tap dancing on the kitchen tile. Life goes on.

...Wet Weather In Our Future...

This afternoon's forecast package comes to you from the road. Getting
a late start to New Orleans to attend the Sugar Bowl tonight and spend
a long weekend in the Big Easy. I am very excited about spending time
in Lakeview neighborhood tomorrow. I recently read the excellent
personal journal of Katrina survivor Hank Klimitas. He stayed in his
home at 6622 Orleans Avenue during the hurricane as the levee broke on
the 17th Street Canal and flooded the first floor of his home. He
stayed in the attic for the next seven days before being rescued. His
personal journal was published as a book.

WET WEATHER AHEAD: A band of showers moved through Central Alabama
this morning ahead of a weak cold front. Rainfall amounts were very
light. The front will stall or wash out over Central Alabama later
today and get ready to come back northeast as a warm front tomorrow.
The next player in our weather will be a low pressure system that will
swing out of Oklahoma and Kansas, accompanied by a significant
shortwave trough. This will spread showers and storms back into
Alabama late Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. There could be
severe weather over Southwest Alabama, but I don't think we will see
any in Central Alabama. Sunday will see a cold front coming through
and we should see cloudy skies with a few leftover showers. But the
parade of weather systems will not be over. A very strong upper
trough will be swinging out of the southwestern states by Sunday and
this will generate a low pressure system in the western Gulf. This
low will track along the old front, and spread rain and storms back
into Alabama. This system could be dynamic enough to produce severe
weather in Alabama Tuesday. The SPC is already outlooking Alabama and
parts of the Deep South for the potential for severe weather.

CHANGE TO COLDER: There are indications that a screaming trough will
set up from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley south into Dixie on
Wednesday. This will allow all that cold air up in Canada to pour
southward and we will enter a very cold phase for Wednesday and
Thursday. The main rain and storms will move out late on Tuesday, but
there could be a spoke of moisture and energy rotating through late
Tuesday night that could produce a light wintry mix. The models hint
at that possibility again Wednesday night Another shot of cold air
arrives for the weekend, and there are signs that wintry
precipitation could develop somewhere in the Southeast. It is a
pattern that will bear watching as we move through the week ahead.

METEOR SHOWERS: Saw a beautiful meteorite last night driving from
Gadsden to Birmingham. It was likely part of the annual Quadrantid
meteor shower. It will peak early Saturday morning. The Earth will
enter a stream of debris from shattered comet 2003 EH1. Hopefully,
clouds will part enough for some views across Central Alabama, but I
kind of doubt it.

ON THIS DATE IN 1949: Seven weeks of blizzards began striking the
American Great Plains almost without letup. Temperatures plummeted to
as lows as -50 degrees F. The first blizzard dumped forty one inches
of snow on Chadron, NE. The death toll reached 200, but the loss of
livestock was unbelievable with 150,000 sheep and cattle perishing
during the storms. Operation Haylift was a military operation
undertaken to rescue passengers from over fifty stranded passenger
trains and drop food and supplies to snowbound ranchers.

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family are having a relaxing
and peaceful New Years Day. Are you ready for some football? Catch
the Capital One and Rose Bowl games on ABC3340 this afternoon.

FINE START TO 2009, BUT CHANGES AHEAD: It is a fine, seasonable New
Years Day here in Central Alabama. Morning temperatures were a little
cooler than normal, with lows across the state ranging from 20F at the
Bankhead National Forest station to 37 at Dothan. Readings across the
I-20 Corridor were in the middle and upper 20s. Highs this afternoon
will top out generally in the middle 50s under mostly sunny skies.
Southeasterly winds are already on the increase, and will be sending
moisture levels up. Clouds will also be on the increase late in the
day. A few light showers may break out after midnight tonight.
There was some concern that some freezing or frozen precipitation
could occur at the onset tonight, but I think temperatures will stay
warm enough for liquid precipitation overnight. There could be some
sleet as the precipitation begins. We will watch eastern sections to
make the temperatures don't drop too quickly too early.

A SHOWERY FORECAST: A weak cold front will be approaching Alabama on
Friday. As it does, a few showers will develop during the day. The
front will stall out somewhere over Central Alabama, waiting to come
back north as a warm front. By Saturday morning, a low pressure
system will be forming over the nation's midsection. As this low
intensifies, southerly winds will pick up across Alabama and shove the
front northward. It will be accompanied by a few showers. By late
Saturday afternoon, rain and some storms will be massing at our
weather border. They will overspread the area Saturday night. A cold
front will move through early Sunday, putting a temporary end to the
rain. Even though there could be a few light post-frontal showers, it
should be mainly dry Sunday night into early Monday.

A NEW YEAR/A NEW WEEK: By Monday morning, another low pressure
system will be forming over the western Gulf of Mexico. This low will
move northeast, spreading rain back into western Alabama by mid-
afternoon. Rain will be likely across Alabama Monday night. The
track of the low will limit severe weather chances to extreme South
Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The rain should end from the west
late Monday night. A big upper trough will move slowly eastward to
our north, bringing the chance of precipitation to North and Central
Alabama Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a chance there could be a
little wintry precipitation mixed in, depending on temperature profiles.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The Associated Press initiated its Wirephoto
Service. The facsimile service transmitted news photos to its
subscribers. Two products that would remain a feature of the service
were two daily weather maps, one for morning papers and one for
evening papers. The Wirephoto Weather Maps have remained a staple of
the AP. UPI also offered daily weather maps to its syndicate by
facsimile. By April 1982, the USA TODAY color national weather map
had changed the face of newspaper weather maps.

The party hats and noisemakers are all put away. The fireworks are
all exploded. It was great to see Dick Clark again. I hope that you
have your traditional Southern New Years staples: ham, black-eyed peas
and collard greens. These food items are supposed to bring
prosperity. I hope that you and your family have a happy, peaceful
and prosperous 2009!

LOW CONFIDENCE FORECAST: Much of Alabama has been blessed with
generous rains in 2009. While some locations still sported rainfall
deficits, all of Alabama is out of the horrible drought conditions
that have plagued us for the past two years. It looks like we will
get off to a wet start in 2009. But the devil is in the details and
the numerical models are not giving us a lot of confidence.

NEW YEARS DAY/FRIDAY: Today is easy. Lots of sunshine and several
degrees warmer as our winds shift around to the southeast. Clouds
will begin to increase late in the day as moisture levels increase and
dewpoints start to rise. Temperatures will fall into the lower 40s
during the evening, but will start to rise slowly overnight. Some
precipitation may break out overnight, but it will be light, and
liquid. A weak front will drop into the area on Friday, triggering a
few light showers. The front will stall over Central Alabama. Highs
will rise into the upper 50s.

THE WEEKEND: By Saturday morning, low pressure will be organizing
over the Oklahoma Panhandle. Increasing southerly winds will be on
the increase, and they will push the front back to the north, playing
the role of warm front. Look for a nice round of rain ahead of the
front over North and Central Alabama. As the low moves into Missouri
Saturday afternoon, a cold front will push to the southeast. Showers
and storms will continue into the warm sector through the evening
hours. Rain chances should remain high through the overnight hours
and into early Sunday morning. Rainfall amounts may average more than
an inch. The front will move through during the morning, and Sunday
afternoon and evening should feature a respite from the rains,
although a leftover shower is possible.

NEXT WEEK: As we get back to a fairly normal schedule next week,
things will continue on the unsettled side. Most of Monday may be on
dry, but low pressure will be developing along the Texas coast by the
morning. This low will intensify and head northeast. The most likely
track will be across South Alabama. If this materializes, North and
Central Alabama will receive another round of rain and perhaps a
little thunder. Tuesday will feature a few light showers and cooler
temperatures with a cool northwest wind. Could there be a little
wintry mix Tuesday night?

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: Rainmaker Charles Hatfield set up his
equipment in San Diego, California. It had been bone dry in San Diego
for months. Desperate for rain, the City Council had approved his
proposal to fill the city's near empty reservoir for $10,000. The
self-proclaimed meteorologist used towers holding barrels of boiling
secret chemicals. His claim was that he didn't make the rain, he
attracted the clouds and the rains just came. Soon afterwards, it
began to rain in Southern California. Problem was, to didn't stop.
Flooding resulted and on the 27th a dam on Lake Moreno collapsed, with
large loss of life. Many people filed lawsuits against Hatfield, but
the suits were dismissed because the event was an Act of God. The
city refused to pay Hatfield for his services since it was an Act of
God. Hatfield's life would be turned into a play, a novel and
eventually Burt Lancaster would play him in the 1956 film The
Rainmaker. You can find a statue erected to Hatfield at Lake Moreno.

...A Cool Start For 2009...

DRY AND CHILLY NEW YEARS DAY: If you are going out to ring in the New
Year tonight you might need more than a sweater or light coat. Because
it will get progressly colder as the night goes on. One bit of good
news is that the brisk winds will diminish. Look for temperatures to
be in the low 40s early this evening and in the 30s before midnight.
The overnight low should be around 27 across the Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham, and Anniston area. Up in North and Northeast Alabama, it
will be more like 22 to 25. A decent warm up will come tomorrow with
mid 50s. About the same on Friday but even warmer over the weekend.

THE RAIN SITUATION: At one time we thought the showers would arrive
late at night on New Years day but now we believe they will hold off
until Friday morning. We expect occasional showers on Friday. Then on
Saturday, after a break, a few will show up by afternoon. It appears
that those showers will become more numerous Saturday night. Still a
good chance of showers on Sunday. In all of this, we may get about a
0.80 rain amount.

2008 RAIN REPORTS: At Birmingham Airport, we will end 2008 with a 1.26
inch surplus. The total for the year was 55.09 inches. Last year
(2007), we only received 28.86 so we almost doubled that amount this
year. In the Tennessee Valley, Huntsville got almost 12 inches of rain
in the last four weeks which brought their total for the year to 48.30
which is a shortfall of over nine inches. Rain amounts were quite
variable around the state because at least two tropical events. One of
the more interesting totals is at Scrougeout in NE Etowah County. Vic
Bell, the 33/40 skywatcher there, reports 12.51 inches in the last
four weeks for a grand total for the year, an amazing 62.29 inches.
More than 25 percent of that fell in about five days, including two
days in August with Tropical Storm Faye and three days in December.

ROAMING FAR AFIELD: Bitter, bitter cold over the far North. It was a
bitter 57 below zero this morning at Beaver, Alaska and 54 below at
Ft. Yukon. Fairbanks had 43 below zero after a high yesterday of 35
below. Wind gusts reached 61 mph on Mt. Mitchell, NC this morning and
64 mph on Grandfather Mt. Coldest in the lower 48 was 33 below zero at
Wahpeton, North Dakota. Spokane got an amazing 60 inches of snow in
the last four weeks. By far, the most ever. There was a tragic story
concerning eight snowmobilers who were swept away and killed by an
avalanche in the back country of British Columbia in Western Canada.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I feel sure that we will hear fireworks
as midnight approaches. Little Miss Molly can hear them from a long
way off. I will try to be in position to hold her, cuddle her and even
play ball with her to divert her attention. Fireworks get to her like
thunder so she will probably go to one of her designated safe spots
before I can comfort her. She still misses the majority owner and it
appears she will not be home from the hospital until tomorrow. Life
goes on but it sure has been mixed up for over a week.

===================================================================

The heavens have their own fireworks show planned for tonight, with
two big events taking place simultaneously. The weather will
cooperate beautifully, with clear and cool conditions expected.
Looking southwest just after sunset tonight, you will find the two
brightest objects in the night sky, planet #2, Venus, and an exquisite
waxing crescent moon nestled up against each other in a spectacular
New Years Eve pairing. Venus is so bright because clouds cover much
of its surface. At the same time, closer to the horizon in the pale
glow of the fading sunset, use a pair of binoculars to catch another
cosmic duo: the first planet out from the Sun, tiny Mercury cozying up
to Jupiter, the second brightest planet. What a way to start your
New Years Eve festivities.

WINDY AND COLDER TODAY: A dry cold front moved through last night,
accompanied by only some patchy clouds. The legacy the front is
leaving us is colder temperatures and stiff winds. A lake wind
advisory is in effect today. Temps will top out around 50F, with some
spots hanging in the 40s. It will be clear and cold as you ring in
the New Year tonight. New Years Day will be a transition day with
winds shifting to southeast. Clouds will be on the increase overnight
as the next storm system approaches. Showers should develop after
midnight and rain will be fairly likely on Friday morning. Rain
should end during the day as the front pushes through, but it won't
get too far to the south.

WEEKEND: After temporary clearing Friday night and early Saturday,
clouds will return during the day, and showers won't be far behind.
Showers will develop by afternoon and become more likely overnight.
We stay in a southwesterly flow aloft on Sunday, even as a cold
airmass tries to sink in from the north.

STRONGER STORM EARLY NEXT WEEK: We should see a temporary break on
Monday, but by Monday night a powerful low could bring heavy rain and
storms to the state. There could be some severe weather.

SNOW BOWL: Bear Bryant said later that the only thing that could
have messed up his 1963 Alabama team's chances in the 1964 Sugar Bowl
against Ole Miss in New Orleans would have been if it were to snow.
Well, much to his chagrin, it did snow the night before the January
1st game in the Crescent City, an amazing 4.5 inches. Alabama would
win the game by a 12-7 margin.

The New Year's Eve Snow in the Deep South also dumped an incredible
19.2 inches at Muscle Shoals (still a record for the state of
Alabama), 17.1 inches of snow on Huntsville, 15 inches of snow at
Meridian, and over 10 inches at Bay. St. Louis MS. Mobile picked up
two inches. Birmingham picked up 8.40 inches of snow, the fifth
biggest snowstorm in the city's history. Much of Northwest Alabama
was buried under 15-17 inches of snow. Roofs and awnings collapsed
under the weight of the snow. The snow paralyzed much of the area for
up to three days, closing schools and businesses.

...Temperatures Close To Normal...

NEXT RAIN AFTER MIDNIGHT THURSDAY: Our temperatures for the next
several days will be more rational and about what they should be in
late December and early January. Our average low temperature at the
end of December and into early January is 33 and the average high is
53. Based on the long history, our coldest time of the winter is the
second and third week in January. Of course that fluctuates greatly
from year to year so that is just an average. As far as snow is
concerned, we have about as good a chance in February as we do in
January. Please don't take this as a hint that we will have a snow
this winter because we simply don't know for sure. If we did know, we
could make a few million. Actually, the all time snow record for
Birmingham can be blamed on the blizzard of 93 in the month of March
when we got 13 inches.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Another cold front will come whizzing through
Central Alabama while you are still sleeping tonight. There will be no
showers or thunderstorms to herald it's arrival. Instead the wind will
shift around to the North and gust to over 20 mph during the day
tomorrow. The old thermometer will do good to reach the 50 degree mark
in our area. Up in the Tennessee valley, the high will be more like
45-48 so that will be quite noticeable.

NEW YEARS DAY: Another day of mostly sunshine to start 2009. Early
morning temperatures will be in the 20s and highs will be in the 50s.
Clouds will increase at night. There could be some showers after
midnight. If you are going out for a celebration, tomorrow evening,
temperatures will be in the 40s. Those showers will linger into Friday
and it will stay cool all day. Most of Saturday will be dry but clouds
will increase late and we may see some more showers after midnight
Saturday. The rain amount for the showers after midnight Thursday
night and Friday should be close to ½ inch.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: More strong winds and heavy snow in parts of the
Northeast. You can talk to anyone from Seattle and Portland Eastward
across Utah, Colorado, Montana, the Northern Plains, Midwest and all
the way into New England and they will tell you they are exhausted
from shovelling snow. It has been a winter to remember. Alaska has
shared the bitter cold and snow. The high in Fairbanks yesterday was
30 below and the low this morning 40 below. It was 53 below zero this
morning in Beaver, Alaska. Down here in the lower 48, where all the
states touch each other, the coldest was 15 below at Gunnison,
Colorado and Hallock and Roseau, both in Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Miss Molly now tries a different tactic
to trick me into playing ball with her. She will very calmly follow me
like a shadow everywhere I go in the house looking straight up at me.
Those little eyes are powerful. It does not take much of that for her
to seize control of me and she usually gets a ball game. Her other
tactic is to grab one of her balls when she sees me coming and sling
it at me. Tried something different last night. I slept in a chair in
the den. Molly took over my recliner next to me. We both slept like a
rock. Life goes on.

...Nice Day Today...

I hope that you had the opportunity to make it to Legion Field
yesterday to catch the Papajohns.com Bowl. Mark Meadows and his crew
did a superb job, and North Carolina State and Rutgers put on a great
show. It will end up being on the of the most competitive bowl games
of the year. The weather was perfect.

SHORT TERM FORECAST: Today should be even nice than today, with more
brilliant blue skies and highs about five degrees warmer than
yesterday, in the upper 60s. Clouds will increase some this
afternoon, ahead of a dry front. Winds will shift around to the west
and northwest tonight as the front passes, and colder air will be
spreading into Alabama. Look for lows tonight to be in the middle
30s. Wednesday will be sunny and colder, with a stiff and chill north
wind.

NEW YEARS EVE SKY SHOW: The heavens have a special New Years Eve
show planned just for you. In the rosy glow of sunset, you will find
the tiniest planet Mercury and Jupiter converging together in a
splendid conjunction. Higher in the southwestern sky, the two
brightest objects, the Moon and Venus, are moving impossibly close
together. The Moon will be a beautifully splendid Crescent.
Something to behold. The good news is, the weather will cooperate
perfectly, with clear and cool conditions Wednesday night. Lows will
be in the upper 20s Wednesday night as you ring into the New Year.

WELCOME TO 2009: Things will transition by Thursday as the next
system approaches Alabama. The day will start off sunny, but clouds
will be on the increase. Showers will reach western Alabama during
the late evening and overspread the area during the overnight.
Showers will be likely Friday morning. There could be some thunder
involved, but despite the dynamics, storms do not look likely. It
will turn colder again behind this system with a freeze likely
Saturday morning. Saturday will be sunny and cool, but winds will
shift again Saturday night with moisture returning by Sunday. Rain
will be on the increase Sunday night and Monday will be a windy,
stormy, very wet day. Another system later that week will bring rain,
perhaps followed by a chance of snow.

ONE YEAR AGO: 0.47 inches of rain fell at the Birmingham Airport on
the next to the last day of the year. This brought the annual rainfall
total to 28.86, which is the driest year on record in the Magic City.
As the year ended, nearly 75% of Alabama was in drought conditions. A
full 22 percent was in exceptional drought conditions. The rainfall
at the end of the year eased the exceptional drought just a bit, but
it would be the middle of 2008 before the drought eased in Alabama.
Unfortunately, by the end of 2008, an area that included western North
Carolina, northwestern South Carolina and northern Georgia was still
in a horrible drought. In the driest year category, Birmingham was not
alone. Huntsville AL (28.65), Rome GA (28.71) and Greenville SC
(31.08) also each had their driest years on record in 2007.

...Three More Dry Days..

CHILLY TONIGHT MILD TUESDAY: Our tired, old thermometer has gotten a
workout lately moving up and down the scale. More of that in the next
few days. It will sink to around freezing tonight only to zoom upward
to about 66 tomorrow afternoon. That is about 13 degrees above the
average high for December 30. It was 69 in Tuscaloosa Sunday
afternoon. It was only about a week or so ago when the sunrise
temperature was 17 in the Druid City!
After that 66 tomorrow, another cold front will arrive Wednesday with
brisk northerly winds and a high of about 50. That will be followed by
upper 20s on New Years morning.

NOW ABOUT THE RAIN: Latest guidance tends to delay it until late
Thursday night and into Friday morning. Not a huge rain event but ½
inch amounts should be
fairly common.

JANUARY 1 2009: For the beginning of our new year, it will be cool.
Around 28 to 30 at daybreak with a high in the mid 50s. We believe
that rain will hold off until late that night possibly after midnight.

ROAMING FAR AFIELD: As we look out across the far-flung landscape of
this old world, we can find almost any weather that you want. The
temperature reached 85 at Naples, Fla., for the USA warm spot Sunday
afternoon. Cold spots this morning included 11 below zero at Gunnison,
Colo., and a bitter 50 below at Beaver, Alaska. Gunnison is located
along the Gunnison River over on the western slope of the Colorado
Rockies. The Gunnison flows on westward to join the Colorado River at
Grand Junction, one of the most important rivers in the West. Spokane
now has 17 inches of snow on the ground and they have received 52
inches this December! Amazing. Powerful winds Sunday and Sunday night
knocked out power to over 200,000 customers in Michigan according to
press reports. Another big storm system poised to affect the Pacific
NW, however, it appears that the lower elevations like Seattle and
Portland will have mostly rain and that is a good thing.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had hopes that the MJ (Majority
Owner) would come home from the hospital today but it was not to be.
Newest estimate is Wednesday. One thing is for sure, there is a little
nine pound animal that owns this house that will go berserk when she
comes through the door. Little Miss Molly has tried to hang close to
me the last several days. Yesterday, she would often come in my
weather office and curl up by my desk, where she could look out the
office door just in case the MO arrived. The MO has now been gone for
a week but she is doing well. Yesterday, we had additional company
with my granddaughter, her husband and two babies from Russellville.
Brandon, the great grandson, spent a lot of time chasing Miss Molly. I
bet Molly walked or ran three miles inside the house trying to stay
out of the way and to find some peace and quiet. Life goes on. It gets
a bit noisy at times but still a lot of fun.

...Clearing Skies...

Showers moved across Central Alabama overnight as an upper disturbance
moved across the area. The passing disturbance will give the front
the impetus that it needs to finally clear the area and by tonight it
will be well down the Florida Peninsula. Skies will clear this
morning across the area, leaving a mostly sunny sky for much of the
day. Highs today should manage to rise into the lower 60s. With good
radiational cooling conditions tonight, we expect a light freeze
across much of the area.

BOWL WEATHER: The PapaJohns.com Bowl is at Legion Field this
afternoon. N.C. State will take on Rutgers in a 2 p.m. contest. The
weather will be excellent, with lots of sunshine and a kickoff
temperature around 62. Winds will be blowing from the north end zone
at about 6 mph. By the final whistle, the mercury will be falling
through the middle 50s.

THROUGH NEW YEARS EVE: Tomorrow looks like a nice day, with mostly
sunny skies and temperatures a few degrees warmer than today,
averaging around 67F. Clouds will become partly cloudy by the end of
the day as another disturbance swings by. On Wednesday, Canadian high
pressure will be pushing down into the nation's midsection. The wind
flow between t he high and strong low pressure over New England will
funnel colder air into Alabama. Some spots will not get out of the
40s on Wednesday. New Years Eve will be clear and cold.

STORMY END TO THE WEEK: Thursday should dawn sunny and cold, but
clouds will be increasing during the afternoon. It will become quite
windy and we undergo another quick warm up. Showers will enter
western sections Thursday evening and showers and thunderstorms will
overspread the state Thursday night and Friday morning. The rain
should end by Friday night and clear and seasonably cool conditions
will prevail for the weekend.

SKY SHOW TONIGHT: Skies will cooperate this evening as one of the
most beautiful celestial shows of the season draws the year to a
close. The brightest planet, Venus, will be in the southwestern sky
after sunset with a beautiful crescent moon. Just above the horizon,
the tiniest planet Mercury will appear to be getting closer and closer
to Jupiter, heading toward a fabulous conjunction on New Years Eve.

ON THIS DATE IN 1894: The town of Frostproof, Florida was
incorporated in 1886. Local real estate developers, intent on
attracting citrus farmers to the area, lobbied to have the town named
Frostproof. While popular opinion favored another name, the real
estate agent who volunteered to deliver the town's official
application to the U.S. Postal Service changed the application to read
Frostproof. Frostproof was anything but, and a devastating freeze
affected the area on this date, causing severe damage to agricultural
interests across much of the state. Another bad freeze occurred the
following February and was followed by another a couple of years
later. The town petitioned to have its name changed, but it would be
changed back in 1906 and is still called Frostproof today.

...Rain Returning Tonight...

Boy, what a difference a day makes. Yesterday, we were basking in
record warmth. Today, everyone is pulling their jacket a little
closer as they hurry to where they are going with highs in the 50s and
a chilly north wind. It is mainly dry across North Central Alabama,
but signs of unexpected change are underway to the southwest.

SHOWERS BACK IN THE FORECAST: The surface front that moved into
Southeast Alabama overnight and this morning found itself stranded
when its support ran off and left it. The strong upper trough
hightailed it to the northeast and is over New England this
afternoon. Meanwhile, the front found itself parallel to the upper
flow and slowed nearly to a stop. Meanwhile, a weaker trough is
spreading east from t he Plains into the Mississippi Valley this
afternoon. This trough is firing up showers and storms over
Louisiana and southern Mississippi. They are heading northeast. In
fact, the advance guard is already into Southwest Alabama. The rain
will overspread South and Central Alabama overnight. The northward
extent is uncertain, but it appears that I-59 will be a good defining
line for the solid rains. North of there, there will be less. South
of a line from Livingston to Calera to Anniston, I think there could
be a little thunder mixed in overnight

RESET – THE WEEK AHEAD: The clearing that we expected overnight will
be delayed until tomorrow morning. It will begin in the southwest and
spread northeast through the morning hours. After morning lows in the
lower 40s, highs tomorrow should still be able to make the lower 60s.
We should then stay clear through most of Tuesday, clouds returning in
the afternoon. Look for a light freeze Tuesday morning in some
spots. Highs on Tuesday will be a few degrees warmer than Monday.

PROGRESSIVE PATTERN: Canadian high pressure building into the
midsection of the country will usher in colder air on Wednesday.
Highs might not get out of the 40s in some spots, and there will be a
chill north wind. New Years Eve celebrations will be under clear
skies and cold conditions. Thursday will be a transition day, with
southerly winds increasing in response to another approaching trough
and developing surface low to our west. Rain will reach western
Alabama Thursday evening and overspread the state through the night.
The models are hinting at some healthy rainfall amounts, with about
three quarters of an inch in most spots. The rain will depart before
the cold air arrives, so no threat of wintry weather. Another wet
weather system arrives just after the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: One passenger was killed and 63 injured aboard
a United Airlines 747 flying from Tokyo to Honolulu when the aircraft
encountered clear air turbulence. Clear air turbulence is very hard
to predict and often strikes with little warning. It usually occurs
around the edges of the Jet Stream and near mountain ranges. It is
like a big pothole in the sky, shaking planes violently and often
causing them to drop large distances. Over 100 people are injured in
turbulence related incidents in the U.S. each year, a very small
amount considering there are 23,600 commercial flights each day, but
injuries can still be serious.

...Much Cooler Today...

After Saturday's record warmth across North and Central Alabama,
today's readings in the 50s will seem chilly. The high of 75F at
Birmingham established a new record for December 27th. Muscle Shoals
also established a new record when they topped out at 75F. There were
numerous daily records established from Monroe, Louisiana to Lansing,
Michigan as a huge warm sector developed from the Deep South to the
Great Lakes. Fortunately, there were no major severe weather events,
although there were well over 100 reports of damaging winds.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The front is likely to slow down as its support
departs to the northeast. Showers should end over all but the extreme
eastern and southeastern sections of the area by early afternoon.
Skies will remain cloudy and temperatures will remain fall a bit then
remain steady in the 50s through the morning hours. They will start
falling again by mid-afternoon, heading for lows in the upper 30s
overnight. Skies will begin to clear during the evening and should be
completely clear by Monday morning, except down around the I-85
corridor where clouds and maybe a shower could languish for the
morning. There will likely be some dense fog tonight in spots that
clear, so keep that in mind if driving.

WEEK AHEAD: Monday should be mostly sunny, except for the far
southeast, where clearing will be delayed. Highs will be seasonable,
around 60F. Monday night lows will drop to near freezing or just
above, and Tuesday will be a couple of degrees warmer than Monday.
Showers will develop along the Gulf Coast on Wednesday, but all we
will see should be a few clouds. New Years Eve should be clear and
chilly as a shot of colder air comes in late in the day, putting us
below freezing by New Years morning. New Years Day will feature a
sunny start, but increasing clouds by afternoon with a good chance of
rain Thursday night into Friday morning, followed by colder weather
for Friday night and Saturday.

SUGAR BOWL WEATHER: Lots of Alabama fans heading to New Orleans this
week for the BCS Sugar Bowl. For New Years Eve in the Big Easy,
Wednesday will start off cloudy with a few early morning showers. The
day will be mostly cloudy and seasonably mild with highs in the middle
60s and lows in the lower 50s. Rain will return on New Years Day,
increasing during the afternoon along with a breezy south wind. Look
for a high around 62 and a low of 52. A cold front will blow through
with showers and storms early on Friday, with rain ending on Friday
afternoon and a cool northwest wind kicking in. The high will be 67.
Readings will drop into the 40s as Crimson Tide fans celebrate on
Bourbon Street Friday night. Look for sunny skies and a high in the
lower 60s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: Ground fog caused a 73 car pileup on the Sam
Houston Tollway in Houston, Texas during the early morning hours. The
fiery collision resulted in 23 injuries, including 5 ones, but
fortunately, no fatalities. The patchy fog reduced visibilities along
the toll road to zero over a short distance. The chain reaction
collision continued for five minutes as unwitting drivers drove into
the fog bank and crash into other cars. It was reported to be the
worst traffic accident in Houston history.
