...Rain Chances Will Go Up Tomorrow...

It has been a beautiful July Saturday across Central Alabama. Plenty
of sunshine, fair weather cumulus clouds and still relatively low
humidities. The mercury hit 90F at Birmingham for the first time in
ten days. Radars are nearly totally clear at mid-afternoon. A small
shower had developed over East Alabama's Randolph County, near
Wedeowee. Isolated thunderstorms were lined up along the Gulf Coast
from southeastern Louisiana to Northwest Florida. Other storms were
northeast of Nashville and showers were over eastern Arkansas. Those
showers to our northwest are the signs of change that will come as
early as tomorrow.

SHOWERS AND STORMS TO RETURN: Those showers and storms to the north
are being produced by a cold front that extends from Central Missouri
through Central Illinois and Indiana. Tonight will remain fair across
Alabama, with any lone showers petering out and the puffy cumulus
clouds dissipating. Moisture levels will be increasing overnight, and
things will feel more humid by morning. By lunchtime, the front will
be near Memphis. Showers and storms will fire during the afternoon
and push southeastward overnight. The SPC has backed off on the idea
of there being severe storms over North Alabama late in the day.
That's good., although there could be a few strong storms.
Unfortunately, I am afraid that not everyone will get rain and some
folks could use it.

DROUGHT WATCH: Recent rains have really benefitted the short term
moisture needs of parts of Walker and Jefferson Counties. Other spots
are not so lucky, especially over East Alabama, where it has been dry
recently. In fact, abnormally dry conditions have crept back into the
drought monitor from Frainlin County down the west side of the state
and over a small part of East Alabama from south of Anniston to
Columbus, Georgia.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The frontal system will stall to the north of
Alabama, and we will stay under the influence of a warm and moist
airmass. Scattered to sometimes numerous showers and thunderstorms
will be the order of the day from Monday until the foreseeable future,
or at least until next weekend. In fact, no real change is seen
through the next two weeks. Rainfall amounts should average one to
one and one half inches over the next seven days.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, our guest Tony Pann, a television
meteorologist in the Washington, D.C. area will share some breaking
news with us on WeatherBrains. He will also talk about his book, How
to Find a Good Weather Forecast. He will tell us the source of the
ruin of the weather industry and about his Internet radio show, Center
of Circulation. Get exclusive show notes and other information
about the show by following @WeatherBrains on Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1954: The Andrea Doria disaster occurred in dense
fog off the coast of New England as the ship Andrea Doria collided
with the ship Stockholm in extremely poor visibility. Fifty two
people perished. Fog is frequent off of the Atlantic Coast in July
as warm, humid air blows from the shore over the cold offshore waters,
creating tremendous fog banks. The amount of fog diminishes as the
ocean waters warm further during the summer.

...Showers Chances Rise Sunday...

Many spots are starting off in the 50s this morning, but it's back
into the 90s today across the area after nine straight days with high
temperatures below 90F. We have had 14 days with highs in the 80s
this month, quite nice for July. Back in July 2007, we had 16 such
days, and eight in a row, mainly thanks to Tropical Storm Fay and her
meandering path across the Southeast.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Skies will become partly cloudy today, but it will
be dry. Humidities will remain relatively low. Moisture will be on
the increase on Sunday and a front approaching from the north will
trigger scattered showers and storms They could be strong over the
Tennessee Valley during the late afternoon and evening.

NEXT WEEK: The frontal system will stall just to our north. A moist
airmass will remain in place across Alabama during the week ahead.
With the front in close proximity, showers and storms will be possible
for much of the week ahead. They could be fairly numerous at times.

TROPICS: A July nor'easter (isn't that an oxymoron?) moved into
the Canadian Maritimes overnight after bringing heavy rains and windy
conditions to parts of New England. An area of disturbed weather east
of the Bahamas has a good bit going for it, but it is still not very
organized and there are no signs that it will become a problem over
the weekend. Finally, a tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands is
steaming eastward. The Saharan dry air has diminished a good bit and
wind shear is low. The system has some dry air to contend with, but
it could gradually become more interesting in the days ahead.

BEACH WEATHER: Lots of folks squeezing n a last minute beach trip
this week, including us. Expect scattered storms each day for the
foreseeable future along the beautiful beaches of Alabama and
Northwest Florida. Rain chances each day will be about 30%. Highs
will be in the 90 degree range. Lows will be in the lower and middle
70s. The Gulf is like bathwater, with water temperatures in the
middle and upper 80s.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains episode 183 will feature meteorologist
Tony Pann from WUSA in Washington, D.C. Tony is the author of the
book "How to find a Good Weather Forecast." We all know that
according to the 80s song, TV killed the radio star. Tony believes
that the Internet killed weather. We will get Tony's thoughts on the
state of the industry and where it is headed, as well as all of his
meteorological ventures Monday night. Follow the show on Twitter
@WeatherBrains. If you do, you could win Thomas Schmidlin's
book Thunder in the Heartland. The drawing will be held before
episode 184 is recorded.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: The dying remains of Tropical Storm Claudette
dumped 43 inches of rain in 24 hours July 25-26 near Alvin, Texas to
establish the United States' 24 hour rainfall record. Freeport Texas
recorded 30 inches. Damage totaled $400 million. Follow my weather
history tweets on Twitter. I am wxhistorian.

...A Hotter Weekend...

THE ALABAMA STORY: Summer vacation for school children is almost over
and I have a feeling that a large number of folks are headed to the
Alabama coast to enjoy a last fling at the beaches. In places like
Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Destin, Panama City, there will be some
scattered thunderstorms each day all the way through the weekend. It
will not be an all-day rain. High temperatures along the immediate
coast will be in the upper 80s. Most beaches will have a 1 in 3 chance
of a thunderstorm each day. The water temperature is
running generally 85 to 87 degrees just off shore.

Meanwhile, inland over the rest of Alabama, high temperatures will be
rising over the next couple of days—a noticeable chance from
yesterday. We are calling for low 90s Saturday and mostly sunshine.
The humidity will still be fairly low. By Sunday, some scattered
showers and thunderstorms may show up later in the day and still be
around Sunday night. At this time, we believe the better chance of
showers and storms across Central Alabama will be Monday and Tuesday,
but there will still be some others most every day for the rest of
next week. There is a chance that some communities could get over an
inch of rain by late Tuesday.

EARLY MORNING COOLNESS: Another cool morning across Alabama. We have
had a number of those lately. This has certainly helped out the old
air conditioner. Yesterday was the 8th day in a row that the
temperature failed to reach 90 in Decatur, Huntsville, Anniston,
Muscle Shoals and Birmingham. Most unusual, because this is
traditionally the hottest time of the year. It was 57 this morning in
Crossville, 58 in Hamilton, 59 in Cullman and Ft. Payne, and 61 in
Anniston and Decatur. The 63 in Tuscaloosa tied the record low for
July 24. It was also 63 in Birmingham.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The National Hurricane Center does not see any
prospect of tropical development over the next few days. This time of
year you can always find a tropical wave somewhere out in the
Atlantic, but very few develop into tropical depressions or storms. In
fact, one of those tropical waves has some Sahara dust in it.

BOSTON: We will use Boston as our entry point to look around the
world today. In Boston, it is turning out to be a very cool summer. So
far in July, the daily high temperature has averaged only 75 and the
low 62. It has not been above 85 all month. They got over 2 inches of
rain yesterday bringing their total to 4 inches for the month. Nearby
Worcester has had rain on 13 days and over 7 inches this month.

While we are speaking Massachusetts, the highest point in that state
is Mt. Greylock in the NW corner of the state with an elevation of
3,491 feet. Elsewhere it was really chilly in the higher elevations of
Great Smoky Mountain National Park this morning where Mt. LeConte had
a low of 36. They had 33 Wednesday morning. Absolutely amazing. A
University of Michigan study found that men were 6 times more likely
to be struck by lightning than women.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little girl slept 10 hours in a row
last night. This did not count several long naps in the afternoon and
evening before she went to bed for good. She has had a busy, busy
week. Our two great grandchildren ages 2 and 1 will be headed back to
Russellville tomorrow, which means our noise level will no longer
resemble Bryant Denny Stadium and Molly can relax more. They are very
cute kids, but they are also full of energy—even more so than Molly.
Life goes on—noisy at times.

...Warmer Afternoons Ahead...

DRY THROUGH TOMORROW: Dry air covers much of Alabama this morning, and
the lack of moisture means another rain-free day, with a good supply
of sunshine. The dry air will heat very effectively, and most
communities will see a high close to 90 degrees this afternoon. But,
the humidity will stay low, making the afternoon warmth rather
comfortable for late July in Alabama.

OUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow promises to be another dry day with a partly to
mostly sunny sky. We should reach the low 90s, which is
about where we should be this time of the year. But, on Sunday, an
approaching front along with increasing moisture levels will bring a
chance of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms.
That front will become stationary just northwest of Alabama, and we
will maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms on a daily
basis just about every day next week, possibly numerous at times.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: There will be a risk of scattered showers and
storms along the Gulf Coast on a daily basis through early next week,
otherwise about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day with a high in the
upper 80s on the immediate coast. The sea water temperature last night
at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 82 degrees.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A gale center, not a tropical system, is moving
through the Atlantic just off the northeast coast of the U.S.
Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin remains very quiet and tropical storm
formation is not expected through the weekend. We are still looking
for our first named tropical storm of the season, which will be called
"Ana".

EIGHT IN A ROW: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was 84
degrees, making it the eighth consecutive day in which the temperature
stayed below 90 degrees. The hottest official temperature so far this
summer was 96 degrees, recored on June 28.

HANGING OUT THE WASH: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, California with 122 degrees. Triple digit heat was
also reported in a number of cities out west, including Salt Lake
City, Utah, where the high was 102. Unusually cool air continues
around the Great Lakes and the Northeast U.S.; yesterday's high in
Cincinnati was only 77. Columbia, South Carolina was drenched with
3.77" of rain; the total at Lansing, Michigan was 2.18".

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

..Two Dry Days...

HUMIDITY DROPS AGAIN: We are still not calling it a cool front,
instead a frontal boundary. It slowly pushed into North Alabama
yesterday and ever so slowly pushed its way toward the SE reaching the
SE part of the state this afternoon. There was quite a bit of
difference in the weather across Alabama this afternoon with dry and
less humid weather over the north, but with some scattered
thunderstorms along and near the front over the SE part of the state.
A few of those storms were occurring as far north as Chambers County,
but most of them were further SE.

WHAT ABOUT THAT FRONT: We expect it to stall this weekend near the
Alabama/Florida border and completely lose its identity. It will
become an unknown. Meanwhile, warmer and more humid air will be
spreading north-eastward across the state. Here in Central Alabama we
will get enough of a change to set off scattered showers and
thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. There will also be some around at
least through the middle of next week. However, we will have two days
of mostly sunshine Friday and Saturday with lower humidity and
pleasantly cool nights. Lows will be in the mid 60s, but the high just
above 90.

24-HOUR RAIN REPORTS: You can blame the showers on that slow-moving
frontal boundary, but a lot of people are still glad to get some rain.
Here are a few selected amounts from yesterday and last evening:

1.03 Cullman Agricultural Station
0.60 Athens
0.68 Huntsville/UAH
0.66 Russellville
0.62 Cordova
0.39 Birmingham Airport
That sent the total so far this month at Birmingham Airport to 6.44
inches and to an impressive total of 9.47 inches in the last 7 weeks.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Those minor disturbances off the SE USA
coast combined into a broad area of low pressure. While there was
widespread cloudiness and showers, it was disorganized. The NHC
continues their thoughts of unfavourable conditions for a tropical
cyclone, but the low could become an extratropical center for gale
winds. Meanwhile, across our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, sea surface
temperatures are attractive if a tropical system ever develops. The
water temperature was 87 across the East Gulf and 89 in the mid Gulf.

Because that frontal boundary is going to stall near the coast, there
will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms each day all the way
through the weekend for the Alabama/NW Florida beaches. Not an all-day
rain. High temperatures will vary between 88 and 92.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The Southern Hemisphere is in the middle of winter.
Very pleasant in Aukland, New Zealand with highs in the 50s and lows
in the 40s. by contrast, 112 in Baghdad. Phoenix over 100, 22 times
this month.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanks to Brenda Abernathy in Moundville
for a nice invitation for James Spann and I to attend the annual
Stewart-Havana Volunteer Fire Department Rodeo. Gates open at 6:00
p.m. Friday and Saturday at Havana on Highway 69 six miles south of
Moundville. I sure would love to be there, but it looks impossible. I
have still got to get down to Moundville one day and check out the
legendary Miss Melissa Café. Little Miss Molly has never been to where
I grew up. Got to take her down one day and let her roam around
kinfolks farm. She has never done anything like that and I believe it
would be the highlight of her life—almost like a wild escape. She
sure has gotten a lot of sleep since the wildest ever ballgame
yesterday. We will do another one later this afternoon. Life goes on.

...Generally Dry Through Saturday...

WARMER AFTERNOONS AHEAD: Yesterday was the 7th consecutive day with
temperatures below 90 degrees in Birmingham, which is nothing short of
remarkable for July in Alabama. The last time we saw 90 degree heat
was back on July 15, when the high was 93. There is a decent chance
that today will be the 8th day in a row below 90, as we are
forecasting a high in the upper 80s. The air is considerably drier
today over the northern half of the state, and most communities around
here will be dry. Any showers could be confined to the southeast part
of the state, mostly southeast of Montgomery.

We should break the 90 degree barrier tomorrow and Saturday as the
warming trend continues, and the air will remain dry both days and the
chance of a shower is so small that we won't mention it in the formal
forecast for now.

NEXT RAIN: Showers and storms will return to our state late in the
weekend on Sunday, as moisture flows northward, and a surface front
approaches from the northwest. That front is expected to stall out
over Tennessee, and accordingly we will maintain a chance of showers
and storms on through at least the first half of next week. After a
high in the low 90s on Saturday, highs should drop back into the mid
to upper 80s Sunday and early next week due to the clouds and showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The 2009 hurricane season continues to be very
quiet. A large area of disturbed weather is east of the Bahamas, but
upper air winds are not favorable for development, and tropical storm
formation is not expected through the weekend.

BEACH WEATHER: Expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day through
Sunday with the daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s
for inland communities. A check of the sea water temperature last
night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab indicated 82 degrees (F).

WAY UP NORTH: One of our Skywatcher, Todd Foisy, works with the
National Weather Service, and reports weather daily from his home in
Girdwood, Alaska. His report from last night: High 53.1/Low 45.9/
Current 52.2/Rain 2.01" Tons of rain last night and today with some
minor flooding of area river and streams.

WEDNESDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included
1.31" at Coker (the two day storm total there was 2.74"), 1.10"
at Jasper, .42" at Hayden, .28" at Palmerdale, and only a trace at
Weaver.

You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

..Several Days of Dry Weather...

AFTERNOONS GRADUALLY GETTING HOTTER: We are actually in rather good
shape around Alabama as far as our rain scorecard is concerned. At
Birmingham Airport, the surplus for 2009 is slightly over 3 inches and
Lake Purdy, the metro area main water supply, is completely full.

We had some good rain amounts during the night as a wide band of
showers and some thunderstorms took its time to get across the state.
We list only a few of the heavier amounts:

1.47 Coker (West Tuscaloosa County)
0.76 Huntsville/UAH
2.60 Brilliant in SE Marion County
0.73 Smith Dam
1.26 Decatur

Most of those showers exited Alabama early this afternoon. Now we look
to the northwest where a weak front was headed our way. By daybreak,
it should be in Central Alabama and finally all the way down to South
Alabama by Friday morning. (How many times have you heard that lately?
It has been a recurring pattern.)

So what does all of this maneuvering of fronts mean? It means
generally dry weather for the next three days, although there could be
an isolated shower on Saturday. There should be an increase in showers
and thunderstorms on Sunday, but latest model runs seem to indicate
that our best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be on Monday
and Tuesday. By Friday and Saturday, the old thermometer will be going
back into the lower 90s.

Just be glad we are not reliving July 1952. We had bad heat waves that
summer and a repeat two years later in 1954. In July 1952, Birmingham
had nine days with temperatures over 100 including seven in a row and
four days 105 and hotter. We only got 1.11 inches of rain all month.

AT THE BEACH: With a front expected to stall out near the coast by
late Friday, we can expect some scattered showers and thunderstorms
almost every day through the weekend. It will not be an all day rain
and high temperatures will back off to the upper 80s even inland.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Two systems off the SE U.S. coast and in the
Bahamas are so close together that they seem to be merging. The larger
area is centered a few hundred miles east of the USA coast. It should
move northward or NE at about 20 mph over the next day or so. NHC
still expects a low chance of any tropical development—at least over
the next 48 hours or more.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The SPC has only a slight risk for severe weather
this afternoon and tonight over Western Nebraska and NE Colorado. For
tomorrow the risk is confined almost entirely to Minnesota. What a
neat summer Saranac Lake, New York is experiencing. That resort town
in the NE part of the state has only averaged 70.6 degrees for their
high temperature in the first 21 days of July with the low averaging
48.1. The thermometer has not reached 80 a single time. Measurable
rain on 15 of 21 days so far. Hot spot Tuesday was 120 in Death Valley
and the chilly spots this morning 37 in Kremling, Colorado and 35 at
Barter Island, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A real blast today in our living area
and Molly had an absolute ball. My fireman son came by. He is almost
like a kid at times. He got down in the floor with my 15-year-old
grandson, my granddaughter and two great grandkids and they were
tossing balls all over the room. The air was full of balls. Molly was
running in all directions at breakneck speed trying to get her share
of the balls and also trying to avoid being hit. This went on for over
an hour. Every living creature was exhausted when it was over. It was
fun to watch. Life goes on. J. B. Elliott

...Moist Air Returns; A Few Showers Today...

THE MUGGY FACTOR RETURNS: After a remarkable four day stretch of cool
mid-summer temperatures, higher humidity levels return to Alabama as
maritime tropical moves in from the south. And, with a passing upper
trough, we will maintain a chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms statewide. Additional rain totals of 1/4 to 1/2 inch are
expected, with locally heavier amounts. Temperatures will remain below
average because of the clouds and showers, with highs mostly in the
mid 80s.

Drier air moves back into the state tonight, and at this time the
chance of widespread rain looks very small tomorrow, Friday, and
Saturday. Any afternoon showers should be very isolated, and
afternoons will turn warmer. We are forecasting a high in the upper
80s tomorrow, followed by low 90s on Friday and Saturday.

An approaching surface front should bring an increase in the number of
scattered showers and storms later in the weekend on Sunday, and that
front is forecast to stall out somewhere over extreme North Alabama
early next week, which will prolong the chance of showers and storms
into Monday and Tuesday.

TOPIC: TROPICS: The National Hurricane Center is monitoring disturbed
areas of weather near the Bahamas, and in the Caribbean southwest of
Puerto Rico; both are not especially organized, and the chance of
tropical storm formation looks small through mid-week. The rest of the
Atlantic basin remains very quiet.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine today with only a small
risk of a shower; then expect about 4 to 6 hours of sun tomorrow
through the weekend with scattered showers and storms each day. Highs
along the immediate coast will remain in the upper 80s, with low 90s
for inland communities along the coast. The sea water temperature last
night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 84 degrees.

LONGEST ECLIPSE: Six minutes and 39 seconds to be exact. That's the
duration of this today's total solar eclipse--the longest of the 21st
century. The event started at the crack of dawn today in the Gulf of
Khambhat just east of India. From the Gulf of Khambhat, the Moon's
shadow will race east across India, China, and the Ryukyu Islands of
Japan. All of this, of course, is on the other side of the world, and
the eclipse is not visible here in Alabama.

Most solar eclipses produce this sort of surreal experience for a few
minutes at most. The eclipse of July 22, 2009, however, will last as
long as 6 minutes and 39 seconds in some places, not far short of the
7 and a half minute theoretical maximum. It won't be surpassed in
duration until the eclipse of June 13, 2132.

..Back To Their Old Habits...

THE PARTY IS OVER: Have not heard too many complaints about the
weather the last three days, but we cannot go on living like that in
mid-summer in the Deep South. So, we will rather quickly return to our
old well-worn weather profile of humid days and afternoons gradually
getting hotter and with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The
showers and thunderstorms will be the main variable. Late yesterday
and overnight a broad band of showers and thunderstorms triggered
quite a few warnings in Kansas. Overnight it has been more of a flash
flood problem for parts of Eastern Arkansas, West Tennessee and NW
Mississippi.

Those storms will probably not be that numerous tonight in Alabama,
but there will be some. We will also call for scattered showers and
thunderstorms Wednesday. They should greatly thin out on Thursday and
few, if any, on Friday. There will be a chance of some more returning
on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the old thermometer will not treat us too badly until
Friday and Saturday when highs will reach the lower 90s. A low-pressure
area was over NE Texas and Arkansas this afternoon pulling our old
frontal zone back northward as a warm front. The low should be near
Memphis by daybreak. By Wednesday night, another frontal boundary will
try to make its way into North Alabama and slowly work toward the
coast on Friday.

MORNING LOW TEMPERATURES: Not quite as cool this morning as on
previous mornings, but still plenty comfortable. One of the cooler
spots was again DeSoto State Park with 50. 50s were common over a lot
of North and Central Alabama. Again this morning, record lows were
established in Birmingham, Montgomery, Troy, Tuscaloosa, Anniston,
Alexander City and Pinson.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Two little areas we need to mention. The
closest one to South Florida was over the Northern Bahama Islands.
Surface pressures remain high. No sign of organization at this time.
NHC estimates less than a 30% chance of that becoming a tropical
cyclone in the next 48 hours. A tropical wave was over the East
Caribbean. Upper level winds remain unfriendly for development. Now,
we talk beach weather.

In places like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Destin, a few
thunderstorms are possible tomorrow and scattered ones for Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. Each day will have about a 1 in 3 chance of
seeing one. High temperatures of 90-92 inland, but upper 80s on the
immediate coast.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A high of 112 for tomorrow in Baghdad. This will be
about the same as in Phoenix. Southern Arizona has been cooking this
month. All 20 days of July, so far, have averaged 110 in Phoenix and
every day it has been 103 or hotter. The last 11 days in the largest
city in Arizona has averaged an amazing 114. On 8 mornings, the low
temperature was above 90. Only 0.04 rain so far in July. The hottest
in the USA yesterday was 125 in Death Valley. Low this morning 36 in
Yellowstone National Park. In the Big Apple, occasionally known as New
York City, this July is well on its way to being the second coolest on
record with records dating back to 1869.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I always like to share good news from
pet owners. Ann Kreitlein got the great news that her cocker spaniel
is okay after some tests. She has had it a long time. Little Miss
Molly is doing great, full of energy. I hate to admit that I am behind
on ballgames again. I have not played with her in two days. I wish you
could see her little eyes when she is petitioning me to play with her.
They almost have a hurt look. I see no reason I will not be able to
catch up this afternoon and have a rambunctious time with her,
especially because my toothache is gone. The down side is that she
never gets enough playing. I need to be 16 years old to keep up with
her, but I still love her an immeasurable amount. Life goes on.

...Showers Return Tomorrow...

MOIST AIR SLOWLY RETURNS: After a remarkable series of days in which
we have enjoyed record lows, low humidity levels, and excellent
visibility thanks to the lack of summer haze, moist air will begin to
return to Alabama late today and tonight ahead of another surface cold
front to the west. A few showers should enter West Alabama, perhaps
reaching Birmingham by midnight, and East Alabama after midnight.
Then, we will forecast a good chance of showers and storms statewide
tomorrow as the front passes through. We figure most places will see
somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 inch of rain during the next 48 hours,
but as always with summer convection a few spots could see heavier
totals. The showers should end tomorrow evening as the next surge of
dry air arrives.

For now, the chance of rain looks relatively low on Thursday and
Friday, but we will be in a northwest flow aloft, and we always have
to watch for thunderstorm masses than organized over Missouri and
Arkansas that ultimately roll into our state without much warning.
Temperatures will be warmer, with upper 80s on Thursday, and low 90s
on Friday.

THE WEEKEND: Another surface boundary will approach the state
Saturday, meaning an increased risk of showers and storms as we begin
the weekend. It won't rain all day, of course, but a passing shower
or storm looks like a fairly decent possibility now. And, it looks
like this front will hang up somewhere over North Alabama, which will
prolong the risk of scattered showers and storms into Sunday and the
firs few days of next week. Looks like highs mostly in the upper 80s
over the weekend.

TROPICS: A tropical wave is moving into the eastern Caribbean this
morning, but hostile upper air winds will make a for a rough ride in
coming days. In fact, the system could dissipate during the next 48
hours, but we will keep an eye on it just in case. The rest of the
Atlantic basin, for now, remains quiet.

JULY CHILL: Very interesting to note that 49 degree low at DeSoto
State Park in DeKalb County yesterday morning. The lowest temperature
ever seen in Birmingham is 51 degrees, recorded on July 15, 1967. We
were within 8 degrees of that all time record yesterday when the
official low was 59 degrees. It rarely gets this cool in July in
Alabama.

WEATHERBRAINS: Our weekly Internet show rolls along; this week's new
show, which was posted last night, features Dr. Thomas Schmidlin from
Kent State University, and the subject is tornado safety and
automobiles. Schmidlin's research recommends that instead of leaving
your vehicle if you find yourself being overtaken by a tornado with no
shelter available, that the car provided more safety than being
outside in the open, even in a ditch. This, of course, goes against
conventional and traditional advice. You can hear the show on iTunes,
and on the web at weatherbrains.com.

..A Taste of Autumn...

ANOTHER COOL NIGHT AHEAD: When Alabamians crawled out of bed this
morning and especially if they went out the door early, they felt a
distinct chill in the air. That was the story all the way from the
Tennessee border to the Gulf coastal waters. In fact, if you were
practically at the coast of South Mobile County, you knew the
temperature was cooler than average. It was 62 in Fairhope and 63 in
Coden very close to the coast.

Numerous communities in North and Central Alabama had record lows for
July 20. Just a few samples:

55 at Anniston Airport, previous record 60 in 1947
59 at Tuscaloosa, previous record 64 in 2004
59 at Birmingham Airport, previous record 60 in 1947
55 in Pinson, previous record 61 in 1962
We have a long list of morning low temperatures posted on the 33/40
Weather BLOG. We searched all sources and the lowest temperature we
could find was 49 at DeSoto State Park. Here are a few others:
51 Broomtown
52 Scrougeout, Crossville, Cottondale
53 Guin, Muscadine, Munford, McCalla
54 Cullman Airport, Townley, Valley Head

TIME TO WARM BACK UP: While it will not be a drastic warm up, the old
thermometer knows that it will have to go back upward over the next
few days. It will still be cool for the next couple of nights, but
afternoon highs will reach higher into the 80s and should be topping
to near 90 by Friday afternoon. The front that brought all of this
nice weather was stalled over the North Gulf of Mexico this morning.
By tomorrow morning, it will be headed back north as a low-pressure
system forms over Missouri. By Wednesday, we should have some widely
scattered showers and storms showing up and maybe a better chance
Thursday and Friday. Weather models are not in total agreement with
that and we should have some clarification in time for the forecast
tomorrow.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Still no sign of any real action in the
Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic, Caribbean and our friend,
the Gulf of Mexico. We should mention a tropical wave east of the
Lesser Antilles, which was producing clouds and showers, but
disorganized. Upper-level winds are not friendly for development of
this, at least not for the next few days. If you are going down to the
Alabama/NW Florida beaches, pleasant temperatures with highs in the
upper 80s, although the humidity will gradually return. Very little
chance of a shower or storm through Wednesday, but some scattered ones
Thursday and Friday.

RANDOM NOTES: Is this going to be the year without a summer in the
northeast? In New York City, they are well on the way to having the
coolest July since records began at Central Park 140 years ago way
back in 1869. The temperature has been to 85 only once and no 90-
degree weather in June or July. Meanwhile, the Desert Southwest
continues to cook. In Phoenix, the average high so far this month has
been 110 with every day well above 110 and 6 days with 114. The
hottest in the USA Sunday was 126 in Death Valley—only 8 degrees
short of the all-time high in the USA. Cool spots this morning: 32 at
Stanley, Idaho and 36 at good old Deadhorse, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our two great grandchildren from
Russellville are with us again all this week and the noise level is
high (make that very high). This means that Little Miss Molly spends
much of her day on the move trying to find a quiet corner or some
place to take a nap. She loves little children, but sometimes they
chase her and she does not know how to adjust to that. Every time I go
through the living area, I always feel her little paws sliding down
the back of my leg. She petitions for an extra treat and often she
wants me to hold her. Hang in there, Molly. It will not last forever.

...Humidity Levels To Rise...

It is another beautiful morning across Central Alabama, thanks to a
very deep upper trough, the axis of which extends from Canada into
Alabama. This trough is allowing unusually cool and dry air to flood
southward. If it were winter, we would be seeing extremely cold
weather. Coming in July, it has provided very low humidities and
relatively cool temperatures for mid-summer. In fact, a few spots
likely recorded record lows this morning. We will be reviewing the
list of records a little later.

CONTINUED MOSTLY DRY: The mostly dry conditions of the weekend will
continue into the early part of the week. Skies will be mostly sunny
to partly cloudy today and tomorrow with highs in the 80s. Lows
tonight will edge back up into the lower and middle 60s, with middle
and upper 60s tomorrow night.

MORE TYPICAL SUMMER CONDITIONS RETURN LATER IN THE WEEK: Moisture
will start to surge into the area by Wednesday, and dewpoints will
rise back into the 60s. This means that it will feel more like summer
in Alabama. It will also be indicated by the return of isolated to
scattered showers and storms for the latter half of the work week.
Highs will be near 90F, lows near 70F.

IN THE TROPICS: We're monitoring a tropical wave that will pass
through the Windward Islands this morning. It became better organized
on Sunday, but it is encountering increasing shear thanks to a trough
over the eastern Caribbean. It will be interesting to watch this
system as it moves into the western Caribbean later in the week where
upper level winds will be more favorable for development.

CARS AND TORNADOES: That will be the main topic of conversation on
Monday evening as we welcome Dr. Thomas Schmidlin to WeatherBrains.
Dr, Schmidlin authored a 2002 paper that questioned whether
automobiles were as susceptible to being overturned by tornadic
winds. His research led the American Red Cross to change their
version of tornado safety rules earlier this year to say that being in
a car was preferable to being in a ditch or depression in the open.
The NWS and the Red Cross have now reached a compromise in the
confusing difference. We will review that joint release with Dr.
Schmidlin and try to help clear the air over the controversy. Weigh
in with your thoughts on AlabamaWX.com. Take the poll, and add your
thoughts.

Get the latest daily news and notes about the podcast that's all
about weather by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains. Learn about
future guests and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008: The curtain finally fell on the long life of
Hurricane Bertha. Bertha is the longest lived July hurricane (7.5
days.) It is also the longest lived tropical storm for any July, at
16 plus days. Bertha also established a record for the furthest east
that any tropical storm and hurricane formed so early in the season.

..Oh, What A Beautiful Day!...

Greetings from Alexandria, Louisiana. It was a beautiful day to fly,
just a shame that it had to come on a Sunday when we have a Perfect
Weather Warning in effect for Central Alabama. The early hour of my
departure meant that I did not have to arise early to see the gorgeous
sky show playing in the eastern sky before sunrise. There was a
beautiful crescent moon along next to a stunningly bright planet
Venus. Above that was the eye of Taurus the bull, Aldebaran, glowing
red, not very far away from the reddish, twinkling planet Mars. And
finally, looking like a cosmic smudge, the Seven Sisters of the star
cluster the Pleiades headlined the astronomical show.

RECORD LOWS: The morning of 61F at Tuscaloosa was a record for the
date, surpassing the old record of 64F. The 59F at Huntsville tied
the record for the date. Patchy clouds kept the readings from being
as low as they could have been, but it was still 54F at Valley Head
and Crossville in North Alabama. Pinson dropped to 58F. We could
see additional records Monday morning. The record for July 20th at
Birmingham is 60F. That is definitely attainable.

RETURN TO MORE TYPICAL SUMMERTIME CONDITIONS: After more near record
lows Monday morning, temperatures and humidity levels will gradually
return to more Alabama summerlike conditions as we head through the
week ahead. Monday and Tuesday should be dry. Highs Monday will be
in the middle 80s for the most part, with upper 80s onTuesday. Lows
will gradually warm into the upper 60s by Tuesday night. Dewpoints
will be on the rise, bringing humidity levels with them. We can't
rule out an isolated shower or storm Tuesday, but scattered showers
and storms will gradually be on the increase starting Wednesday.

SUNDAY MUSINGS: I hear that Bill Gates has teamed up with a group of
investors and inventors to create a system t hat would weaken
hurricanes. I hear that the premise is that a fleet of large
specialized ship would position themselves in front of a forward
moving hurricane. This ship would bring up colder water from the deep
oceans to near the surface, in a manmade sort of upwelling. The cooler
water would weaken the hurricane. This might mitigate some of the
extreme damage without eliminating the positive effects of northward
heat and moisture transport from the tropics to the poles. Would it
work? You do the math…what would it take to raise enough cooler
water to the surface to lower the heat content of the top 150 feet of
water low enough to weaken the hurricane?

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: A severe thunderstorms struck the new Busch
Stadium in St. Louis where the Cardinals were about to entertain the
Atlanta Braves. Thirty people were injured as press box windows were
blown out and portable concession stands overturned. The tarp was
also damaged. The start of the game was delayed over two hours as
crews cleaned up the damage. Winds were estimated at 80 mph. Power
was knocked out to over 50,000 people in the area after the storm.
Just as power crews were working to restore electricity in the region,
a second round of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes pushed the total
without power to over 500,000 again. If you enjoy historical weather
information, follow my weather tweets. I am @wxhistorian at

...Oh, What A Beautiful Morning!...

Here at The Weather Company, we define a Perfect Weather Warning for
Central Alabama as temperatures in the middle to upper 70s, sunny to
partly cloudy skies and light breezes. But today's outstandingly
fine weather has prompted the issuance of a PWW for today across the
area. It is a perfect chance to get out and sample the best that July
has to offer in Alabama sans the humidity and scorching temperatures.

YOUR FORECAST: Today and Monday will feature similar weather to
Saturday: lots of sunshine, bright blue skies, a few clouds, low
humidities and daytime high temperatures that will be running some 4-6
degrees below normal for mid-July. Lows Monday morning will again
flirt with record for the date. The record low for July 20th is 60F
at the Birmingham Airport. We will be right at that. Tuesday will be
a bit warmer, but still should be mainly dry. Can't rule out an
isolated thundershower Tuesday afternoon. Moisture levels will be on
the rise by Wednesday, and we will see more of a typical summertime
pattern, with scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms
developing each day.

TROPICS: Two African waves are of interest tight now, but neither
shows more than a low probability of developing into a tropical
cyclone at this time. The first is moving into the eastern
Caribbean. It brought heavy rains to the islands overnight, but it is
experiencing strong shear, so development is not expected. The second
is a little less than 1,000 miles east of the islands. It is
surrounded by a tremendous amount of Saharan dust, which is inhibiting
the thunderstorms associated with the disturbance, so again,
development is not expected. The tropics should remain quiet for the
next week.

WEEKEND PONDERINGS: On a drive back to Birmingham from Columbus,
Mississippi, I was struck by a sign on the toll book of the bypass.
The sign says: "Tuscaloosa West Bypass: Connecting Our
Communities." Would that be an oxymoron? Where is Grammar Girl
Mignon Fogarty when you need her?

WEATHERBRAINS: If you have studied the man-made disaster that was
Hurricane Katrina, you have probably heard of Ivor van Heerden. He is
the coastal expert who recently was terminated from his position at
the Louisiana Hurricane Center at LSU. Many say that it is because
his outspoken stand on the levee policies and practices Dr. van
Heerden will be our special guest on the August 24th WeatherBrains
Hurricane Katrina special. Follow WeatherBrains at Twitter.com for a
chance to win a prize this week. It will be announced on Monday
night's show.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Hail larger than eggs in central China killed
at least 15 people. Injured people poured into hospitals after the
giant hailstorms went on a 30 minute rampage in northern Henan
province. It had been a deadly year in China with over 800 people
dying in flooding. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am
