...Warmup Underway...

It was another frosty morning across North and Central Alabama.
Morning lows dropped into the teens in most locations. It was 20 at
the Birmingham Airport and 21 at the NWS in Calera. Some other lows
included:

13 at DeSoto State Park
15 at Decatur
16 at Muscle Shoals, Huntsville, Crossville, Anniston and Fort Payne
17 at Troy
18 at Montgomery
19 at Tuscaloosa
20 at Selma

FOR THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Afternoon readings will make it in to
the lower 50s across much of the area under mostly sunny skies.
Tonight, our winds will be light, but the airmass will have modified
enough to keep temperatures from free falling again. Overnight lows
will range from 24-29 across the area, several degrees warmer than
last evening. Clouds will be more evident of Sunday, but plenty of
sunshine will allow readings to warm to near 60 degrees.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The moderation of our temperatures will continue into
the new work week, with readings in the 60s on Monday. Southeasterly
winds will begin to pump more moisture into the area ahead of our next
storm system, low pressure over the Plains states. By Tuesday, skies
will become cloudy, and there could be a few showers during the day
into the overnight. By Tuesday night, a cold front will be
approaching Alabama from the west. It will propel a line of showers
and storms across the state during the late night hours Tuesday into
early Wednesday. The storms should not be strong. Wednesday will be
a transition day, with showers ending during the morning and some
clearing during the afternoon along with northwesterly winds. But the
airmass behind the front is not Arctic in nature and seasonable
temperatures will take us into the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The gametime temperature at Lambeau Field in
Green Bay was 11 degrees as the Packers kicked off against the
Vikings. The Pack fell behind, but Green Bay QB Bret Favre was 34-0
at Lambeau when then temperature is less than 34 degrees. He brought
the Pack back with an impressive drive to win the ballgame 26-22,
making his record an impresive 34-0 during cold weather.

...Brrrr!...

It is another icy morning across North and Central Alabama with a hard
freeze in most locations. Temperatures went below freezing shortly
after sunset last night and will be there. Temperatures are cold, but
the record low for the date at Birmingham (9F - 1917) is safe and
sound. Not the case at Tuscaloosa and Anniston, where records don't
go back as far. Both stations saw lows of 18F back in 1968.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: If you are tired of the cold, take heart. After
readings barely made it to 40F at the Birmingham Airport and stayed in
the 30s across North Alabama, temperatures will edge back into the
lower 50s under near total sunshine. The surface high will slide to
the east of Alabama by tonight and our winds will become
southeasterly. As this happens, dewpoints will move out of the single
digits and back to near 20F. As a consequence, lows tonight will
drop only into the upper 20s. Tomorrow, afternoon readings will top
out in the upper 50s to near 60, a veritable heat wave.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, it will seem positively balmy, with highs
in the middle 60s. By then, changes will be underway. Surface low
pressure will be over the Central Plains. It will become quite breezy
during the day ahead of a cold front that will be moving eastward
toward Alabama. Tuesday will feature increasing clouds with showers
developing by late in the day. A line of thunderstorms will enter the
state during the overnight hours.

Severe weather does not look like a possibility. Wednesday will see
the showers and storms moving east out of the area. Northwesterly
winds will usher in slightly cooler air Wednesday night and Thursday,
but nothing like this week's arctic airmass. A disturbance will pass
by to our north on Friday, spreading clouds back into the state
temporarily. By Saturday morning, high pressure at the surface will
be centered directly over Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 1919: Snow began falling in Bend, Oregon during the
pre-dawn hours and continued to fall non-stop for the next two days.
Before it was over, a total of 47 inches of snow had fallen. All
transportation ground to a halt. Buildings began to collapse from the
weight of the snow.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The sixteenth tropical storm of the season
formed in the North Atlantic, ten days after the hurricane season came
to an end. The storm, named Peter, may have briefly been a hurricane
during its short life, as it developed an eye characteristic of a
hurricane. If it was, it was only the fourth recorded December
hurricane in Atlantic history. Officially, Peter is still classified
as a tropical storm. Of course, the hurricane season of 2005 would
not be outdone, as it did feature a December hurricane…Epsilon.

Two tropical storms in December 2003 is an even more notable event,
having happened only once in recorded history, in 1887.

BELOW FREEZING ABOUT 15 HOURS TONIGHT: Our long-advertised arctic
cold front was moving SE rather quickly through Central Alabama this
afternoon. Look for generally the coldest temperatures so far this
season tonight and Friday night. Welcome to Autumn in Alabama!
Officially, winter is still two weeks away.

Here in Central Alabama, we project the temperature to fall below
freezing by around 8 o'clock tonight and remain below freezing until
around 10:00 tomorrow morning. By daybreak, it should be near 18 as an
average across Central Alabama. Some of the valleys will be a few
degrees colder. The wind will not completely die down overnight, so it
is going to feel extremely cold. It will also be breezy Friday as
temperatures struggle to reach the mid 40s. Saturday morning lows
should average around 19, but there will be quite a variation between
the valleys and the ridge tops with the latter being the warmest. A
warming trend will start Saturday afternoon and continue into early
next week. It still looks like our next chance of significant rain
will be the middle of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The high school championship games will be at
Legion Field starting this afternoon with more games on Friday and
Saturday. For tonight's game, which starts at 7:00, it will be near
freezing near kickoff and dropping to about 26 by 9:00 p.m. It will be
breezy. The next game will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday. It should be sunny
and about 43 at kickoff, but in the 30s in the second half and not as
windy. For the Friday night game starting at 7:00, light winds, clear
and cold, 27 at kickoff, about 22 at the end. Saturday games will have
much nicer weather. The first game is at 11:00 a.m. Sunny with 47 at
kickoff warming to about 50 in the 4th quarter, not much wind. For the
3:00 p.m. game, clear with a light wind, about 53 degrees at kickoff,
cooling to about 42 late in the game.

A PERSONAL NOTE: You bet, I remember Pearl Harbor Day. I was 9 years
old and I distinctly remember the program interruption on WJRD Radio
in Tuscaloosa for a flash. In those days, it was called a Flash
Bulletin, not a special report. My dad had already gotten me
interested in world events before he was killed in a work-related
accident. I followed WWII as close as possible by listening to WJRD in
daytime. They signed off at sunset, so I depended heavily on CBS Radio
News from WWL in New Orleans. I read every word about the war in the
Tuscaloosa News and the Birmingham Age-Herald, which arrived one day
late by mail. There was no TV in Havana Junction or anywhere else in
those early days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our little friends, known as dogs and
cats, sure do have some interesting habits. Little Miss Molly's food
and water dish are in the kitchen on the tile floor, but she insists
on eating her meals on the carpeted living area. I believe she assumes
it is a giant tablecloth. She will make numerous round trips to her
dish and get one or two pellets of Science Diet dog food and walk some
10 feet back to the carpet to eat. They are so interesting to watch.
We took Little Miss Molly to the vet in Argo this morning to update
her shots and have a physical. She is in great shape and we are
thankful. Again, she started shaking as soon as we got in the car. She
knew exactly where she was going. Life goes on....

...Back Into the Deep Freeze...

The Arctic Express is on the track again, and will roll into the Deep
South today with an icy north wind that could gust as high as 30 mph
this afternoon. The mercury should peak in the mid 40s around the
lunch hour, and then fall through the afternoon. At this point it
looks like we will go below freezing around 7:00 this evening, and we
should remain there until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. So, for tonight look for
sub-freezing temperatures for about 14 hours.

We are forecasting an average low of 18 degrees tomorrow; the actual
range should be from 15 to 21 for most communities in North Alabama. A
breeze will continue through the night, so there probably won't be
much difference from the valleys to the ridgetops as low level mixing
will continue. If we reach 18 degrees at the Birmingham Airport
tomorrow morning, that will be the coldest temperature in 2006, and
the first time we have visited the teens since January 1. So far, our
coldest morning was back on February 19 when the low was 22 degrees.

Tomorrow will stay cold; even with maximum sunshine we will have a
hard time reaching the mid 40s. Then, with a clear sky and a calm
wind, Saturday morning will be another very cold one. Of course, with
radiational cooling we will have a big range from the low spots to the
mountaintops. We are forecasting an average low of 20 degrees at
daybreak Saturday, but number will probably vary from 12 in the
coldest valleys (like Valley Head) to 32 on high elevation spots
(especially above 1,500 feet), like Cheaha State Park.

WEEKEND WARM-UP: The Arctic air over Alabama will modify nicely over
the weekend; look for an afternoon high in the mid 50s on Saturday,
and in the upper 50s on Sunday. We might see high clouds from time to
time over the weekend, but our weather will remain dry for most of the
state. A few showers could show up over the far southeast corner of
Alabama by Sunday afternoon, however.

NEXT WEEK: At this time it looks like our next significant rain event
will come late Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday night, and early Wednesday
morning as an upper trough and associated surface cold front move
through here. Some thunderstorms could be involved, but for now the
chance of severe weather looks relatively small. Then, later in the
week, another upper trough is forecast to spin up a surface low in the
northeast Gulf of Mexico by Thursday. This might bring some rain to
the state Thursday night, but for now it looks like the best chance of
that will stay over the southern counties.

HODGEPODGE: In Chicago today, the forecast high is 15 degrees with a
wind chill index during the day as low as 10 degrees below zero. As of
last night, 27.2% of the "lower 48" was covered by snow. Missouri is
still nearly 80% covered from last Friday's winter storm and most of
North and NW Illinois is still covered. The nation's warmest spot
yesterday was Riverside, CA with 84. Congratulations to Bill Proenza,
the new director of the National Hurricane Center. Max Mayfield is
retiring in January.

...Another Cold Air Blast Tomorrow...

Expect a nice warm-up today across Alabama. After another cold start,
the temperature will rise into the low 60s today, about five degrees
above normal for early December. While a few high clouds might float
by from time to time, there will be a good supply of sunshine across
the entire state. Enjoy the warmer afternoon, because...

ANOTHER COLD SHOT ARRIVES TOMORROW: An icy north wind will pick up
tomorrow, gusting at times to 25 mph, bringing in more Arctic air into
Alabama and the Deep South. The new blast of cold air will arrive in
dry fashion, with only a few scattered clouds. The high tomorrow will
drop into the mid to upper 40s, and yet another hard freeze is ahead
for tomorrow night. By daybreak Friday, we expect lows in the 15 to 25
degree range again, with mid teens for the coldest valleys and mid 20s
for the ridgetops. Saturday morning should be just as cold; maybe even
a degree or two colder in a few places with a clear sky and light
wind.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: After the hard freeze early Saturday, a warming
trend begins
again Saturday as the afternoon high will reach well into the 50s.
There is a good chance we reach the low 60s Sunday as the air
continues to modify. At this point we see no significant chance of
rain for the weekend; look for a good supply of sunshine both days
with only a few scattered clouds.

Some moisture will begin to return early next week, but at this point
the chance of rain looks so small it isn't worth the mention in our
formal forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Afternoon high temperatures on
both days should be close to 60.

NEXT RAIN: At the moment it looks like our next decent rain event is
about 8 to 9 days away; toward the end of next week (December 15-16)
as an upper trough approaches from the west. Way too early to be
specific about that system, but it does looks like some decent rain
amounts might be expected across a large part of Alabama.

RECORD COLD: The low yesterday in Anniston was 19 degrees; that easily
beat the old record low of 23 set in 1949 and tied in 2000. There was
also a new record low in Pinson, where the low was 18. The old record
there was 19 set in 1987. The coldest spot we could find around
Alabama was Hamilton, where the National Weather Service cooperative
observer reported 13 degrees.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Snow continues to melt across Oklahoma and
Missouri; Kansas City reported a high of 48 degrees yesterday; the
high in Oklahoma City was a toasty 58. Up in Alaska, the weather was
also warmer. In Fairbanks the high was 13 degrees above zero, just 7
to 10 days ago their high was in the 20 degree below zero range. In
East Tennessee around Gatlinburg and Cades Cove, it will become
increasingly windy tomorrow with a few snow showers and high
temperatures only 25 to 35. The wind chill will be much lower.
Tomorrow night will be even colder with lows 5 to 15 but the wind
chill will drop as low as 10 below zero!

BACK TO ANOTHER DEEP FREEZE BY THURSDAY NIGHT: I guess you could
call it roller coaster weather. When I was growing up in beautiful
Havana Junction and had a passionate interest in weather, seemingly as
soon as I could walk, we used to call it yo-yo weather and it meant a
period of brief warm-ups followed quickly by another cool down. It
will be cold again tonight, but not nearly as cold as last night when
we saw some more teens in the North Alabama valleys. Wednesday will
see temperatures in the upper 50s by afternoon. Meanwhile, we are
keeping one of our eyes focused on the NW where another strong surge
of arctic air will arrive Thursday determined to make you shiver
because of north winds of 15 to 25 mph. Here in Central Alabama, look
for an average low around 22 for Friday morning and 20 Saturday
morning. As we have known for many, many years, that means some
communities will have teens on those two mornings. I guess the good
side to all of this is that we do not expect any rain all the way
through the weekend. One weather model hints at a slight risk of rain
Monday, but we will wait before we say for sure. Now, let's look at
some of the low temperatures in Alabama this morning:

13 in Hamilton (I believe that is the lowest I have seen so far this season.)
17 in Falkville, Rainbow City, Livingston, Centreville and West Hueytown
18 in Black Creek and Gaylesville
19 in Anniston, Gadsden, Crossville and Branchville

Most other lows over North and Central Alabama were between 20
and 25. We have a complete list on the 33/40 blog.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: 1953 was a horrible year for tornadoes in the
USA. The last one to kill people happened on December 5 when 38 people
died in Vicksburg, Mississippi and 270 were injured…news reports today
say that about 130,000 people are still without power in the greater
St. Louis area, because of last Friday's big snowstorm…coldest in the
lower 48 this morning was 11 below at International Falls, Hibbing and
Bigfork, Minnesota. It was 17 below in Northway, Alaska…in the far,
far Northwest at a weather station we like to watch in winter, it was
14 above zero in Mayo, Yukon. Not long ago, they had 35 below zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: How would you like for your world to be
only ½ mile round? Little Miss Molly lives her whole life in those
confines and she is happy as a lark. She hates riding in a car so the
only time she gets out of her world is to go a few miles to Argo to
her vet and Puppy Beauty Shop. I live much of my life in those close
confines, too, and I never get bored. I don't ever remember being
bored in my whole life. We are still trying to catch that pesky fly.
My friend, Neal Vickers, told us how. Meanwhile, Molly and I have
named the fly, Freida. But we have not adopted her as a household pet!
Not yet. Life goes on.....

DRY WEATHER ALL WEEK, BUT SOME COLD NIGHTS: Plenty cold across
Alabama early this morning. Overall, it was the coldest morning we
have had this season. Here are a few samples:

15 at Belle Mina located just NE of Decatur
18 at Union Grove and Eva
19 in Hamilton and Vinemont
20 in Decatur, Russellville, Scottsboro and Valley Head (See our blog
for a complete list)

Other lows across the north were in the low and mid 20s. It was 23 in
Birmingham and 26 in Anniston, Tuscaloosa and Talladega.

Lows tonight will be just as cold—maybe a degree or so lower, but
when you wake up tomorrow morning, the wind will be practically calm
and not a biting wind like it was this morning. Look for moderating
temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday. However, on Thursday another big
surge of colder air will move down across the snow pack in the
nation's midsection and into the SE. That will send our temperature in
a nosedive again with low to mid 20s for Friday morning. We do not
expect any rain at least through Saturday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: That was an unbelievable winter storm that
covered a large area from North Texas into the Great Lakes last week.
Reports are that as many as 250,000 are still without power in the
metropolitan St. Louis area. There was still 13 inches of snow on the
ground this morning at Rochelle in NW Illinois and their low
temperature was 5 below zero. Based on satellite surveys, about
one-half of the lower 48 states are now covered with snow, including
North Texas, all of Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois and down into NW
Arkansas. This means that cold winds from the NW do not have to travel
that far to reach Alabama after traveling across the snow pack. This
can have an effect on our temperatures, especially daytime highs…the
temperature sank to 26 below zero this morning at Lake George,
Colorado and 39 below zero at O'Brien Creek, Alaska. There is 41
inches of snow on the ground at Lena Point near Juneau and 54 inches
atop Eagle Crest, Alaska.

IT CAN SNOW IN DECEMBER IN ALABAMA: Most everyone remembers the big
New Year's Eve snowstorm in 1963 that brought 20 inches of snow to
Florence and nearly a foot to the Birmingham area. Back in 1886
between December 4 and 6, Montgomery had their greatest snow ever with
11 inches. We have sparse reports in those early days, but I would not
be surprised if places like Cherokee County in NE Alabama got about 20
inches. 25 inches fell at nearby Rome, Georgia.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I have been on a
week-long safari. It seems that one single housefly found its way into
my office and it has been following me around from room to room and
even landing on my keyboard and my arm. I have slapped at it leaving a
red spot on my arm, have used a flyswatter and a rolled up newspaper
to no avail. Little Miss Molly even got into the hunt. When the fly
would get closer to the floor, she would leap up and try to grab it.
Molly is semi-mad at me because of lack of playtime. But, life goes
on. ..

...Cold Nights Ahead...

One cold night down, two more to go. And tonight will be even colder
than last night with lighter winds allowing the mercury to fall into
the lower 20s in many locations. To mention it, today will be on the
chilly side also, with afternoon readings today not making it out of
the 40s. Tomorrow won't be much better, with highs in the lower 50s.
After a very brief moderation on Wednesday back to near normal levels
for this time of year, more cool air is headed our way for the end of
the week and the weekend.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Mostly sunny conditions will prevail today and
tomorrow. Skies will become partly cloudy on Wednesday as winds shift
around to southwesterly and temperatures edge back up into the upper
50s in the afternoon. But another cold front will already be heading
out way by then, and it should arrive late Wednesday night. The
airmass behind that boundary will be a lot like our current one, and
temperatures may well edges back into the 20s at night. Big high
pressure over the Upper Midwest will dive into the Deep South through
the end of the week, and that will keep the fly in the ointment at
bay.

THE FLY: A disturbance over South Texas will be diving around the
periphery of the big high as we head toward the weekend. It is the
classic winter weather battle here in Alabama: a cold air mass and a
low in the Gulf. When they come together perfectly, it can produce a
winter wonderland. It just has been a long time since we had a winter
wonderland here in Central Alabama. It does not look like this one
will be the one. Any precipitation will be shunted well south of
Alabama, it appears.

FAST FORWARD: By next Sunday, we will already be seeing signs of
Alabama's next weathermaker forming to our west. By Monday morning,
low pressure will be near Abilene, Texas. It will spread rain and
storms into Alabama on Tuesday. Then be on the lookout for voodoo
land around the 19th, when we could deal with another storm system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: Heavy snow fell on parts of the South and
southern Appalachians on the 4th through the 6th. Montgomery recorded
their greatest snow of record when eleven inches fell. An amazing
twenty five inches fell in Rome, Georgia and thirty three inches fell
in Asheville, North Carolina..

LONDON'S GREAT FOG: The morning of the 4th of December in 1952 was
beautiful and chilly. But it would quickly turn deadly as high
pressure caused the atmosphere over London to stagnate. By the 5th,
a thick "fog" covered the city. Residents started to complain of a
burning sensation in their throats. Soon, everything was covered with
a dirty layer of soot. Visibility dropped to zero. Hundreds of
people were admitted to hospitals because of respiratory distress.
Over 4,000 people died. Other major toxic fogs affected the city in
December 1873, January 1880 and in 1892, but the 1952 is London's
worst ever smog event.

...Reinforcements On The Way...

If today's weather forecast were a battle, cool continental air would
be calling for reinforcements. And they would be on their way. The
cavalry of cold has advanced past the Missouri Bootheel this morning.
That sounds further away than it really is. Low pressure over the
Great Lakes is propelling the reinforcing shot of cold air southward
and it should reach the northwest corner of the state by late morning
and reach the Birmingham area between lunch time and 4 p.m. It will
be accompanied by a slight wind shift to the northwest and a
freshening of the wind. Winds will pick up to between 8-16 mph
through tonight and temperatures will drop into the middle 20s. Both
forecasting models introduce a tiny chance of a little light rain or a
shower this afternoon or early tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Skies will clear during the overnight tonight,
leaving brilliant sunshine on Monday with a chill north wind and
temperatures that remain in the upper 40s. Look for Monday night to
be the coldest night, with readings dropping three degrees or so over
tonight. You will want to make preparations for a brief hard freeze
Monday night. Tuesday will feature sunny skies again with
temperatures edging into the lower 50s. By Wednesday, some moderation
will begin, with temperatures warming back to near 60 degrees. Two
things will then happen. Another cold front will rush through late
Wednesday night. It should be free of any precipitation, only
accompanied by a few clouds and another wind shift. Then, low
pressure is expected to develop along the Texas coast. And the
traditional winter battle of moisture and cold will begin. It is
early in the season though and it does not look like things will come
together for wintry precipitation with this event. We might see a few
showers Thursday night, but not much more than that. Friday will be
partly sunny as the low passes south of us. It will be partly cloudy
and cool on Saturday and Sunday.

BUTTERMILK SKY: A buttermilk sky occurs when a mottled layer of
altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds cover a part of the sky, looking
like butterfat on top of milk. It can make for a gorgeous sunrise or
sunset. And it did last night. It looked like the sky was on fire as
the sun went down in the west from my vantage point driving out of
Trussville. I hope you got to see it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Famous weatherman Cleveland Abbe was born on this
date in New York City. Abbe was a meteorologist who pioneered in the
foundation and growth of the U.S. Weather Bureau, later renamed the
National Weather Service.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: 9.22 inches of rain fell at the NWS in
Birmingham on West Oxmoor Road in just 24 hours on the night before
the Alabama/Auburn game. Severe flash flooding resulted and some
evacuations had to be done. If the observation had been at the
airport, it would have been a new 24 hour record for Birmingham. Of
course, Hurricane Ivan erased that two years ago. There was a tornado
warning and torrential downpour during the Iron Bowl game at Legion
Field.
