...Back Into the Deep Freeze...

The Arctic Express is on the track again, and will roll into the Deep
South today with an icy north wind that could gust as high as 30 mph
this afternoon. The mercury should peak in the mid 40s around the
lunch hour, and then fall through the afternoon. At this point it
looks like we will go below freezing around 7:00 this evening, and we
should remain there until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. So, for tonight look for
sub-freezing temperatures for about 14 hours.

We are forecasting an average low of 18 degrees tomorrow; the actual
range should be from 15 to 21 for most communities in North Alabama. A
breeze will continue through the night, so there probably won't be
much difference from the valleys to the ridgetops as low level mixing
will continue. If we reach 18 degrees at the Birmingham Airport
tomorrow morning, that will be the coldest temperature in 2006, and
the first time we have visited the teens since January 1. So far, our
coldest morning was back on February 19 when the low was 22 degrees.

Tomorrow will stay cold; even with maximum sunshine we will have a
hard time reaching the mid 40s. Then, with a clear sky and a calm
wind, Saturday morning will be another very cold one. Of course, with
radiational cooling we will have a big range from the low spots to the
mountaintops. We are forecasting an average low of 20 degrees at
daybreak Saturday, but number will probably vary from 12 in the
coldest valleys (like Valley Head) to 32 on high elevation spots
(especially above 1,500 feet), like Cheaha State Park.

WEEKEND WARM-UP: The Arctic air over Alabama will modify nicely over
the weekend; look for an afternoon high in the mid 50s on Saturday,
and in the upper 50s on Sunday. We might see high clouds from time to
time over the weekend, but our weather will remain dry for most of the
state. A few showers could show up over the far southeast corner of
Alabama by Sunday afternoon, however.

NEXT WEEK: At this time it looks like our next significant rain event
will come late Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday night, and early Wednesday
morning as an upper trough and associated surface cold front move
through here. Some thunderstorms could be involved, but for now the
chance of severe weather looks relatively small. Then, later in the
week, another upper trough is forecast to spin up a surface low in the
northeast Gulf of Mexico by Thursday. This might bring some rain to
the state Thursday night, but for now it looks like the best chance of
that will stay over the southern counties.

HODGEPODGE: In Chicago today, the forecast high is 15 degrees with a
wind chill index during the day as low as 10 degrees below zero. As of
last night, 27.2% of the "lower 48" was covered by snow. Missouri is
still nearly 80% covered from last Friday's winter storm and most of
North and NW Illinois is still covered. The nation's warmest spot
yesterday was Riverside, CA with 84. Congratulations to Bill Proenza,
the new director of the National Hurricane Center. Max Mayfield is
retiring in January.
