...Hot and Dry...

It's summertime in Alabama. You would expect things to be hot and
dry, just not this hot and this dry. There are no real prospects for
change in sight anytime soon, although we will be pulling for a big
eastern U.S. trough by next weekend that could deliver us a good
chance of rain and storms. Nothing in the drought busting department
by any means.

HOT, HOT, HOT: I started to talk about there being potential for
record highs today across the area. The record high for today in
Birmingham is 100F. We are going to fall just short of that. For the
past few days, dry air from on high in the atmosphere has mixed down
to the surface about 10 a.m., allowing temperatures to soar. That did
not happen today, at least at Birmingham. If it had, we might have
seen 100F.

TENNESSEE STORMS: A stationary front north of the border has resulted
in scattered storms across the Volunteer State. Several severe
thunderstorm warnings have been in effect. But this activity is not
moving our way.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow's record high at Birmingham is 99F, so
we will have another shot at a record. Skies will be partly cloudy
and there will be plenty of haze, much like today. Tomorrow will be
dry again, although moisture levels will be increasing, so it will
feel more humid.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Increased moisture levels will mean the return of
seasonal daily scattered thunderstorms each day. This means that the
heat will be backing off just a bit. Instead of the mid and upper
90s, lower 90s will be more common. As the trough deepens over the
eastern U.S. late in the week, a frontal boundary will come southward.
It should be close enough to produce thunderstorms on Friday and
again on Saturday as it settles into the area.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet for now. No development
from the low that moved across Florida this week. No othjer
disturbances of note in the tropics. We will be monitoring that
frontal system that will move offshore next weekend. That would be a
logical spot for tropical development this time of year.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: An outbreak of violent tornadoes across eastern
Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. 100 people
were killed in Shinnston WV, which was leveled. A total of 154 people
were killed and 966 were injured. The tornadoes defied previous
meteorological thought by crossing mountainous terrain. A family of
tornadoes killed thirty people along a 85 mile path from near
Wellsburg, WV to near Uniontown, Maryland. As many as four violent
tornadoes were on the ground simultaneously during the evening hours.
The most devastating tornado of the evening was an F4 monster that
carved a sixty mile path from near Pine Grove to near Alpena. One
hundred people died in this tornado, including thirty at Shinnston.

...No Real Relief In Sight...

As has happened so many time over the past few months, anytime that we
see signs that we might see an enhanced chance of showers or storms,
something comes along to squash our hopes. We have been hanging our
hats for the past couple of days on an increasingly moist and unstable
airmass. But just as that looks like a plausible weather solution,
building high pressure to our east seems to blot out the chances.
Alabama will continue on the fringe of the strong high pressure over
the western Atlantic, with abundant moisture flowing into places that
don't need any more rain. Places like Louisiana and Arkansas.
Couldn't we just borrow a couple of cups?

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: Jefferson and Shelby Counties will be
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert today, and probably again on
Sunday thanks to Ozone. This is your excuse not to cut the grass this
weekend. Try to reduce driving. Sensitive individuals should limit
outdoor exposure and curtail activities.

SEARCHING FOR SHOWERS: A dry airmass covers Alabama this morning. A
weak frontal boundary is to our north. A low over the Carolinas will
allow the boundary to slip south as a backdoor front, but it should
have little effect on our weather. Highs this afternoon and tomorrow
will average around 96 degrees. Moisture levels will begin to
increase tonight as an upper low to the west of Alabama begins to spin
up. It will turn out to be a battle between the weakness to the west
and the strong ridge to the east. Look for a few isolated storms to
form on Sunday, into Sunday night. Isolated storms will be around
through midweek, forming during the afternoons and evenings. It
appears that the ridging will win out as far as Alabama goes, with the
best chances for significant daily showers and storms over Arkansas,
Louisiana and Mississippi.

END OF THE WEEK: By Thursday and Friday, a trough of low pressure
will begin to form over the eastern United States. As It does, with
will allow a cold front to push southward. It is difficult to get our
hopes up for much in the way of rainfall, although if this situation
does materialize, we will see a good chance of showers and storms next
weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: Massive flooding was underway in parts of
Pennsylvania, the result of a three day deluge caused by the remnants
of Hurricane Agnes. Several mid-Atlantic states were affected, but
Pennsylvania ended up being the hardest hit state with $2.1 billion in
damages and 48 deaths. The damage was so extreme; President Richard
Nixon declared the entire state a disaster area. Agnes is retired
from the Atlantic list of names.

A HOT, DRY WEEKEND: The hot weather is still with us, pretty much
unabated, but there are signs that moisture will start increasing
early in the week and we will even introduce a chance of showers and
thunderstorms. Mind you, this is not enough to get our hopes up that
we will get significant drought relief. We can see a small chance of
a shower or thunderstorm Sunday, mainly over West Alabama. There will
be some widely separated ones on Monday and maybe a better chance of
scattered showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday. Even then, little or
no chance of a widespread drenching. Temperatures will reach the mid
90s over the weekend. Tuscaloosa could get close to 100 Saturday.
After that, highs will back off to the lower 90s early next week due
to some cloud cover and showers.

THE TRAGIC DROUGHT STORY: It seems to go on and on. Droughts occur
when certain weather patterns get locked in and the droughts often
are self-perpetuating. The latest from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows
that a huge part of North and Central Alabama remains in the
Exceptional Drought category. This is the worst of the five-level
designations. There are some indications that part of North Alabama
could be approaching a once in 100-year drought. The situation is not
quite as bad over the extreme NW corner of Alabama. The Exceptional
Drought now extends as far south as near Livingston, Demopolis,
Sylacauga and to Heflin. The Tuscaloosa area has been especially hard
hit. Look at these rain deficits, as of today, just for this year so
far.

20.12 inches shortfall for Tuscaloosa Airport
19.32 inches below normal for Anniston
16.18 inches below for Birmingham
18.65 inches below for Huntsville

In Huntsville, the shortfall since January 1, 2005 is almost 51
inches. That is absolutely an incredible statistic. We have had some
other crippling droughts in the past. In a severe 1954 drought, some
places in Central Alabama did not get a drop of rain for 123 days in
a row. The Warrior River at Tuscaloosa almost dried up and a great
many fish died. (Check more drought information on the blog.)

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunshine Saturday and Sunday, but some
scattered showers and thunderstorms early in the week. High
temperatures 88 to 92.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Miss Molly and I surely have missed Jo-
Jo, when we take our walks, but we see him occasionally. He is a
beautiful solid white dog. Late yesterday Molly and I were out
walking and we met the little baby Yorkie with his mom coming in the
opposite direction. You should have seen both dogs struggling like
mules to get to each other. They had a great play session and, when
the Yorkie's mommy tried to leave, she had to pull him backwards,
because he was struggling to get back to Molly. She had a nice
meeting with Mattie, another Shih-tzu, this morning and we saw
Brigette pass by late yesterday. Molly had a fit to go outside and
play with her. She is a busy little creature. Life goes on.....

...Hot Hot hot...

An upper level ridge over Alabama will keep things hot for the next
few days, with the century mark not out of the question for many
locations. The Gulf of Mexico is closed for business until at least
Saturday night, with a northwesterly flow aloft and a northerly
surface flow. Interestingly enough, that is when we can see some of
our hottest temperatures here in Alabama. Things begin to change a
bit by Saturday night with a return southerly flow and increasing
moisture levels.

AIR QUALITY AND FIRE CONCERNS: Ozone is a problem and high
concentrations have prompted a Code Orange Air Quality Alert again for
Friday. Sensitive individual should limit their outdoor activities.
Everyone can get involved by limiting automobile trips and avoiding
mowing their lawns on peak days. Also, low humidities and high
temperatures are combining with tinder dry vegetation to produce
significant fire concerns. Any fire that gets started could quickly
get out of control.

HOT AND DRY TODAY: Rain chances are just really nil today. There
could be an isolated storm tomorrow, but I stress the word isolated.
Look for mid 90s today and upper 90s on Saturday, when those 100
degree readings will not be hard to attain.

INTERESTING SCENARIO: Yesterday, the NWS Birmingham forecaster picked
up on an interesting scenario for Saturday. The intense heat tomorrow
could set up a heat low, something they see in the Desert Southwest,
where intense heating causes a weak surface low. This could set up a
southerly flow and allow the seabreeze front to come north by Saturday
evening, perhaps enhancing rain chances. Anyway, we continue to hope
for something in the way of showers Saturday night.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: High pressure re-establishes itself over the
western Atlantic by late in the weekend, putting us in a broad
southerly flow again and increasing our moisture levels. That means
more humidity, but also the return of scattered afternoon and evening
showers and storms as we head into the coming week. Nothing that will
probably even keep up with our again growing rainfall deficits, but
perhaps providing some local and temporary relief. The GFS model is
still portraying a deep flow of tropical moisture into regions just
west of Alabama early next week. The hope is that this flow will
slide eastward with time, increasing our shower and storm chances.
That looks like a good chance for western sections on Monday and
overspreading the rest of the area Tuesday and Wednesday. We will
keep our fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The largest hailstone ever in U.S. history fell
near Aurora, Nebraska. The giant stone measured 18 3/4 inches in
circumference and seven inches in diameter. The stone surpassed the
famed 1970 stone that fell near Coffeyville, KS. The hail punched
twelve inch craters in lawns and volleyball sized holes in roofs
across the area.

PLEASANT NIGHTS BUT HOT AFTERNOONS: Temperatures reached 90 or
above in most areas in Alabama this afternoon, but the humidity was
quite low for June. In fact, it was the humidity was as low as 20% in
some areas along with north winds frequently 10 to 20 mph. This, of
course, made the hot temperatures much more bearable, but it also
continued to dry out the soil and the woodlands. The danger of forest
fires is high. We also had a Code Orange Ozone Alert today for the
Birmingham metropolitan area. It was pleasantly cool last night. We
list some selected low temperatures.

54 in Hanceville, Cullman and Ft. Payne
55 Odenville and Pinson
56 Moulton, Collinsville and Russell Cave
57 McCalla, Concord/Hueytown, Decatur
58 Huntsville, Muscle Shoals
60 Tuscaloosa
62 Birmingham, Montgomery, Troy

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: High temperatures will be consistently in the
low 90s through Sunday. Dry weather Friday and Saturday, but some
scattered showers and thunderstorms starting later Sunday and Monday.
The sea surface temperature just off shore is about 83. The National
Hurricane Center is not looking for tropical development, at least
for the next 48 hours.

A HUMONGOUS HAILSTORM: The City of Marquette in the northern edge
of the upper peninsula of Michigan is famous for its big time winter
snows. Yesterday, they had a big time hailstorm to say the least. The
hail covered the ground to a depth of several inches and some of the
stones were as much as 3 inches in diameter. The hail shredded leaves
from the trees, damaged automobiles and trucks, and destroyed one
truck. The cost of roof repairs will probably be enormous. Over in
the NE U.S., New York State has really caught it the last two days
with massive flash flooding and high winds. As much as 8 inches of
rain fell in the Catskill Mountains. Major flash flooding at Roscoe,
New York. Several people were missing. Roads were washed out. Phoenix
will have 112 degrees today and tomorrow. Death Valley had 115
yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I are really
good at taking inventory of all the little varmints we see on our
half-mile walking track. So far this year, we have not seen a single
snake, mosquito or any big spiders. We have seen two very young
earthworms. This morning we were surprised to see our first
bumblebee. It was very, very busy sniffing every little white blossom
on a plant in the hedgerow. I guess that is what you call cross-
pollination. We had heard that bees were scarce this year. I also
counted Little Miss Molly's stops and reverses this morning. There
were 36. That keeps me on my toes, but it lets the little girl have a
very joyful walk. Life goes on......

...Hello Summer!...

Summer officially arrives today at 1:06 p.m. CDT. At that moment, the
Summer Solstice, the sun will stand still at its northernmost position
in the sky. Consequently, it will be the longest day of the year for
us. It is all downhill from here until December. Of course, we don't
see our warmest weather until sometime in July. How can that be, if
the days are shorter?

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect for
Jefferson and Shelby Counties today because of ozone. Combine trips
and find ways to avoid unnecessary travel. Avoid mowing your lawn.
Sensitive individuals should exercise caution.

REST OF THE WEEK: A comfortable start out there this morning with
lower humidities. The lower dew points allowed readings to fall well
into the 60s overnight. There may even be a few 50s from some of the
normally colder reporting stations across North Alabama when all the
numbers are in this morning. Dry weather will be with us through the
end of the week. With lots of sunshine, temperatures will warm into
the 90s each day. Morning lows will gradually warm as moisture levels
increase.

WEEKEND AND BEYOND: With a northwesterly flow, we are not immune to
seeing one of those Midwestern convective complexes come our way, but
they are difficult to pinpoint until they develop and start moving.
We do get consistent signals that some form of disturbance may bring
us a chance of showers and storms Saturday night. The strong
subtropical ridge over the Atlantic will be further east than it has
been, and this is going to allow moisture levels to really increase,
and this should lead to at least daily doses of showers and storms. A
tropical system coming out of the Gulf may be a player in our weather
by early next week. It appears for the time being that it will be
deflected into Louisiana, but time will tell. There are also still
signs that we will see an approaching trough toward the end of next
week, which will hopefully bring enhanced rain chances.

TROPICS: The cold front that brought the rain and drier air to
Alabama is pushing off the East Coast. This is a favored scenario for
early season tropical development, and it looks like low pressure will
form along the front off the coast of the Carolinas or Georgia later
today. While it does not look like the system will be tropical in
nature, it could turn out to be subtropical, which would lead to it
having a name. If it does, it will be Chantal.

NORTH ATLANTIC SEASON OUTLOOK: The UK Met Office on the other side of
the pond has gotten in on the act and issued their North Atlantic
Hurricane Season Outlook. It is less bullish on the number of storms.
The Brits are predicting ten more named storms as the most likely
number. There have already been two named storms, remember. This
would bring their total to 12. Dr. William Gray is predicting 15.
NOAA is predicting 11-15.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: The first day of summer was a wet one in
eastern Pennsylvania as rains overspread the area ahead of the
northward moving remnants of Hurricane Agnes. The wet storm system
was expected to move out into the Atlantic Ocean, but it made an
unexpected turn the next day and dumped unprecedented amounts of rain
over the Susquehanna Valley.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY: Birmingham reached 100F for the first time since
August 29, 2000.

PLEASANTLY COOL TONIGHT: The temperature was in the 80s across much
of North Alabama. The old thermometer had reached 90 in Tuscaloosa
and Birmingham. However, the dew point was in the low to mid 50s with
north winds gusting to 20 mph at times. This is very bad news. It
means that the rain yesterday will dry out quickly, especially with
full sun and the lower humidity. We are getting back in to a dry
period and it looks like little or no chance of rain until late in
the weekend.

Meanwhile, it will be getting hotter with highs in the mid 90s
Friday through the weekend. Until then, we can enjoy a couple of cool
nights. We are going for 59 tonight as an average low across Central
Alabama. Undoubtedly we will hear a few reports of mid 50s from some
of the North Alabama traditional cool spots.

Based on Doppler radar and numerous actual rain reports, we believe
that 75% of the land area in Alabama received rain yesterday. The
only down side to that was that so many of the reports were less than
¼ inch. That soaked into the ground quickly and the brisk wind today
and low humidity caused a lot of evaporation. The rain totals
yesterday were way too numerous to mention here. A few of the heavier
amounts:

2.17 in Andalusia
1.21 in Crossville
1.34 in Centre
1.12 in Bessemer
1.20 in SW Trussville

THE STORY OF BLACK CREEK: Vick Bell is our 33/40 weather watcher
for Black Creek (NE of Gadsden). Rain had been avoiding that area for
months on end. Yesterday there was a big turnaround. The rain came
down in buckets for a time. They received 1.81 inches, including 1.50
inches in only 20 minutes.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Tropics are still quiet. During the
night, powerful thunderstorms moved southward into Oklahoma and Texas
producing high winds, heavy rain and much, much lightning. Texas has
been plagued with flash flood problems for several weeks. Lots of
rain in the NE also with 1.46 inches in Syracuse, 2.02 at Rome, New
York and 1.30 at Saranac Lake, New York. Getting hot in the desert.
It was 116 yesterday in Death Valley and Phoenix is expecting 114
tomorrow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad Molly overslept this
morning. A baby squirrel came hopping up the walk to our front door
and was peeping in the window. I tippy-toed to talk to him and he
scampered. That is the same window that Molly looks out when she
first gets up and she would have been nose-to-nose with the squirrel.
Both of them may have died from cardiac arrest. Molly is becoming a
real night owl and when we mention beddy-bye, she now runs and hides—
first behind the sofa and when we follow her, she races toward the
master bedroom and hides. She is getting spoiled for midnight
ballgames. Life goes on......

...Back to Dry...

A lot of disappointed faces out there across this parched land that we
call North and Central Alabama. Our best chances for rain in some
time produced some brief heavy rains in some area, but some areas got
very little. In actuality, the amounts were generally between one
half and one inch, or very close to what was predicted. But I think
that we were all disappointed that heavier amounts were not more
widespread. Now we go back to mostly dry for a few days.

BACK TO DRY: Drier air will be flowing into Alabama today in the wake
of the trough. This will have one benefit…some comfortable readings
overnight tonight. By tomorrow morning, lows will be in the lower 60s
in many locations, with some upper 50s in the normally cooler valleys
of North Alabama. Small consolation. Sunshine will return quickly
today, and the mercury will rise to near 90 in most locations. Mostly
sunny conditions will prevail Thursday and Friday, with nearly no
chance of rain. We will be in a northwesterly flow aloft, and that
sometimes holds surprises in store for us in the form of thunderstorm
complexes that migrate out of the Midwest.

WEEKEND: We see hints that an organized disturbance will try to work
its way in here late on Saturday, bringing a slight chance of showers
and storms during the overnight hours. It looks like a boundary might
be hanging out for Sunday, keeping a chance of showers and storms in
the forecast for then, also.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEK: High pressure off the Atlantic coast will be
positioned such that we will see a nice flow of moisture off the Gulf
of Mexico by the start of next week. This of course means heat and
humidity, but it also means that we will see at least scattered daily
convection each day. The GFS is optimistic that another decent trough
will be able to invade the area late in the week and given us a period
of enhanced shower and thunderstorm chances.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: A major hailstorm pounded Denver International
Airport, damaging 93 commercial planes and causing the cancellation of
hundreds of flights over the next several days. There were two minor
injuries. Over 14,000 holes and cracks were punched in the flat roofs
of the terminal buildings by the hail that was up to 2 inches in
diameter. Over 4000 automobiles received hail damage.

THE FARGO TORNADO: A deadly and destructive tornado ripped through
Fargo, North Dakota on this date fifty years ago. The tornado is
especially important because it was studied by Theodore Fujita. He
collected hundreds of photographs and home movies of the tornado and
used them to produce a landmark study of a tornadic supercell. More
in today's blog.

INCREASING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS: In no way will it be enough
to break the drought or even to cause a huge dent in the drought, but
we have our best chance of getting rain tonight and Tuesday and maybe
into Tuesday night.
Already this afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms had
moved on shore and spreading northward from the Gulf of Mexico.
Others were developing to our west and moving east from Texas,
Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Overall, this should be our best
chance of getting some significant rain amounts in a long time.

Some parts of Central Alabama could get an inch of rain in the next
24 to 36 hours. A few localized amounts may be more than that. The
general average should be ½ to 1 inch. It is possible that Central
and South Alabama will get the most rain. We are optimistic that this
will be our most widespread coverage of rain in a long time. We have
had some localized heavy showers lately, but the coverage has been
spotty. By Wednesday, most showers should be limited to the southern
part of the state as drier air overspreads the northern counties. Dry
air cools and heats more effectively than moist air. This will give
us some more pleasant nighttime temperatures in the mid 60s, but
afternoons should heat back up to 90 or higher by Thursday and
Friday. Because of the thicker clouds and more numerous showers, we
look for a high tomorrow of only 82.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: I believe the flash flooding in Central and
North Texas is the worst it has been. There has been a lot of that
going on for weeks. Today at least two persons are dead from flash
flooding in the vicinity of Haltom City, a suburb of Ft. Worth. One
beautiful little 6-year-old girl was swept away from the arms of her
mother during the night and another person also drowned. There were
some reports of over 6 inches of rain. At Ft. Worth Alliance Airport,
there was 4.41 inches and 4.66 at Denton, Texas. It is strictly a
case of the haves and have nots. Numerous cities from Houston north
into Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and other Midwest states are showing
big surpluses of rain this year, while North and Central Alabama
continues under the designation of Extreme Drought, which is the
worst category in the nation and the only one at present. Lowest
temperature this morning was 25 at Stanley, Idaho. Hot spot Sunday
was Death Valley with 114.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After writing a story about Computer
Cat last week, I discovered there were a lot of cat fans who love
their cats as much as others love dogs. I knew that, of course, and
it was good to hear from them. Little Miss Molly had a nice visitor
Friday night. She is a cute little dog named Penny belonging to our
Rook friends, Glenn and Frances Slye. Wish you could have seen the
reaction from Molly. Molly loves Glenn and Frances, I believe more
than she loves the majority owner and myself. In reality, Miss Molly
loves anybody that will be receptive to her and she sure goes gung-ho
testing everyone that she sees. I still have to do a story about one
of our readers who owns two big labs. They were able to train them to
not be the least afraid of thunder and lightning. It was a unique
experiment. Life goes on.....

...Keeping Fingers Crossed For Rain...

Greetings out there across the parched countryside we call Alabama.
Drought weary residents, take heart. A trough of low pressure
approaching from the central part of the United States may bring us
our best chances for organized rainfall in quite some time, especially
tomorrow.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: Our surface high is located over the western
Atlantic this morning. A nice southerly flow has opened up the Gulf
of Mexico, and you can see it in the dew points, which have risen
several degrees over the weekend. In the mid levels of the atmosphere
a decent little trough of low pressure is over Oklahoma. This
weakness will allow for an increase in showers and storms today,
although they will still be scattered. Hopefully we saw some signs of
the changing situation with the showers and storms that fired over
South Central Alabama yesterday. We will see an increase in showers
overnight and a good chance of showers and storms over the state on
Tuesday.

DECENT RAINFALL? We are hoping that most areas will get close to an
inch of rain, although it is more likely that most places will see
between one half and one inch, with some higher amounts possible. A
front will drift southward across the area late Tuesday and should dry
us out for Wednesday, and take some of the humidity along with it.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A Code Orange Air Quality Alert continues for
Jefferson and Shelby Counties today due to ozone. Things should
improve over the next three days.

END OF THE WEEK/WEEKEND: Isolated showers will slip back in Thursday
and Friday, especially over eastern sections. Isolated showers and
storms will be around for the weekend. We will watch for the
development of a week low over South Alabama late in the week that
could spell some good rains for southeastern sections of the area.
Hopefully, any such system might drift up into our neck of the woods
and give us the rain.

CHECK ON THE TROPICS: Nothing active in the Atlantic, the Gulf of
Mexico or the Caribbean sea and tropical cyclone formation is not
expected in the foreseeable future.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: After spending 14 days meandering across the
southern United States, Allison, the costliest tropical storm in
United States history finally moved off the East Coast. Allison
dumped flooding rain along her entire path from the devastated Houston
area where she made landfall on the 5th of June, across the Southeast,
Mid Atlantic and finally into Massachusetts. Thirty five fatalities
would be attributed to the Allison, along with preliminary damage
estimates of $2.5 billion.

...Happy Dad's Day...

I hope that you are having a relaxing and fun Father's Day 2007. The
weather is certainly no deterrent, unless you consider the fact that
we are under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert, or that temperatures are
running 5-6 degrees above normal for mid-June, putting the mercury in
the lower and middle 90s. Or that yard work is difficult because of
watering restrictions, and the grass probably isn't growing anyway.
But it does make for perfect weather for heading to the final day of
City Stages, the Magic City's world class music festival being held
downtown.

BORING RADAR: The radar should basically get the day off on this
Father's Day 2007. High pressure centered over the Southeast is
maintaining a firm hold on Alabama's weather. Skies will be mostly
this afternoon and fair overnight tonight. With a more southerly
trajectory off the Gulf of Mexico, our winds have been transporting
more moisture into the area, and dew points have crept up into the
middle 60s. We will see that measure of moisture edging closer to 70
degrees over the next couple of days, which could be good.

GOOD FOR RAIN: Or at least we hope. We are still guardedly
optimistic about our chances for rain come Tuesday and Wednesday.
Monday looks to be hot and dry again with mostly sunny skies and highs
in the lower and middle 90s again. We could see a few isolated
showers and storms tomorrow, but the chance of you seeing rain at your
location is about one in ten. Those chances should go up dramatically
on Tuesday with a trough approaching from the west. This weakness in
the atmosphere and a sagging cool frontal boundary will allow for the
development of fairly numerous showers and storms. We will keep our
fingers crossed that most areas will receive a half inch of rain on
Tuesday, with some lucky folks getting over one inch. Overnight and
morning runs of the GFS clearly move the boundary into South Alabama
on Wednesday, drying out North and Central Alabama. That is not good
news, as we were hoping to enjoy a couple of additional wet days with
a boundary handing around. There are hints at a low developing over
South Alabama late in the week, but that tends to help Georgia more
than us in the rain department.

GOODBYE MR. WIZARD: Did you notice where Don Herbert, known to many
of us Baby Boomers as Mr. Wizard passed away last week? His
television science experiment show probably did more to interest and
educated kids in science that anything else of our day. His show,
Watch Mr. Wizard premiered in 1951 and ran until 1965. Mr. Wizard's
World ran on Nickolodeon from 1983 until 2000, making it the longest
running show on the kids' channel. Mr. Wizard passed away on Tuesday
from multiple myeloma.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Talk about lowered property values. A weak
tornado touched down briefly in the town of Newry, ME. The main
damage was to about 200 trees. The interesting thing about the F1
tornado was that it struck the same piece of property that had been
visited by a tornado less than one year earlier.

...Happy Father's Day...

Father's Day 2007 will feature typical summertime weather (although it
is not astronomical summer yet.) It is meteorological summer,
however, and boy do we know it. Today will feature hazy sunshine and
partly cloudy skies, with moderate humidity and just a small chance of
an isolated shower or wannabe storm. In fact, today will look a lot
like yesterday and high temperature readings will be similar, mainly
in the lower to middle 90s.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Once again today, Jefferson and Shelby County are
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Ozone. The hot and hazy
conditions are not healthful for at risk individuals. Curtail
emissions today.

CHANGES AHEAD: On the weather maps this morning, we find surface high
pressure located over southwestern Virginia. In the mid levels of the
atmosphere, the trough that gave us active weather on Friday was
lifting out to the northeast over the East Coast. Here is Alabama, we
find ourselves under a broad upper level high. But changes are in
store. There is an upper level low over Texas. That upper low is
expected to open up into a broad trough to our west by tomorrow.

This weakness will allow for a few more thunderstorms on Monday, but
we hope that it will bring a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our confidence in this forecast is not very
high, since the models have not shown much in the way of run to run
consistency. For now, we will just keep our fingers crossed.

TROPICS WATCH: The disturbance that has extended from the
northwestern Caribbean across Cuba into the Bahamas is no longer a
threat for tropical cyclone development. As we enter the latter half
of June, it is still early in the North Atlantic season. There has
only been one major hurricane during the last half of June: 1957's
Audrey. Sea surface temperatures are now above normal over most of
the tropical Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico, so prospects for
an active season are unfortunately still good.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: The Oregon Correction Center in WI was hit by a
tornado. Several buildings were destroyed, but much to the prisoners'
dismay, the fences survived.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: What a difference a few miles and an ocean can
make On this morning of June 17, 1997, a daily record low
temperature was broken at the Atlantic City Airport. The old record
was 48 degrees, set back in 1995 and previous years. On the other hand
just a few miles away, the state marina in Atlantic City, NJ, was a
balmy 61 degrees, far from the record of 52, set in 1964.
