...Happy Father's Day...

Father's Day 2007 will feature typical summertime weather (although it
is not astronomical summer yet.) It is meteorological summer,
however, and boy do we know it. Today will feature hazy sunshine and
partly cloudy skies, with moderate humidity and just a small chance of
an isolated shower or wannabe storm. In fact, today will look a lot
like yesterday and high temperature readings will be similar, mainly
in the lower to middle 90s.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Once again today, Jefferson and Shelby County are
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Ozone. The hot and hazy
conditions are not healthful for at risk individuals. Curtail
emissions today.

CHANGES AHEAD: On the weather maps this morning, we find surface high
pressure located over southwestern Virginia. In the mid levels of the
atmosphere, the trough that gave us active weather on Friday was
lifting out to the northeast over the East Coast. Here is Alabama, we
find ourselves under a broad upper level high. But changes are in
store. There is an upper level low over Texas. That upper low is
expected to open up into a broad trough to our west by tomorrow.

This weakness will allow for a few more thunderstorms on Monday, but
we hope that it will bring a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our confidence in this forecast is not very
high, since the models have not shown much in the way of run to run
consistency. For now, we will just keep our fingers crossed.

TROPICS WATCH: The disturbance that has extended from the
northwestern Caribbean across Cuba into the Bahamas is no longer a
threat for tropical cyclone development. As we enter the latter half
of June, it is still early in the North Atlantic season. There has
only been one major hurricane during the last half of June: 1957's
Audrey. Sea surface temperatures are now above normal over most of
the tropical Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico, so prospects for
an active season are unfortunately still good.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: The Oregon Correction Center in WI was hit by a
tornado. Several buildings were destroyed, but much to the prisoners'
dismay, the fences survived.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: What a difference a few miles and an ocean can
make On this morning of June 17, 1997, a daily record low
temperature was broken at the Atlantic City Airport. The old record
was 48 degrees, set back in 1995 and previous years. On the other hand
just a few miles away, the state marina in Atlantic City, NJ, was a
balmy 61 degrees, far from the record of 52, set in 1964.
