...Cool Night Ahead...

The sky will clear across Central Alabama this evening, setting the
stage for a chilly night and a beautiful Sunday. Lows will drop to
near 40F on average, with the normally colder spots getting into the
middle and upper 30s. Frost is possible in some of those locations.

NICE LOOKING SUNDAY/MONDAY: Tomorrow looks like a nice fall day,
with sunshine filled skies and temperatures in the upper 60s to near
70 degrees. That's about average for this part of October. Monday
looks very nice as well, with highs in the lower 70s, after a seasonal
start in the middle 40s for the most part. But clouds will increase
late in the day in advance of our next storm system.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The morning run of the GFS is a little more bullish
on rain chances for Tuesday afternoon as a developing low slides
northward to our west. That system will quickly pass and Wednesday
looks like a partly cloudy, mild and fairly humid day, but it should
be mostly dry. Clouds will increase Wednesday night and rain and
storms will return on Thursday. We could see an inch of rain or more
on average with this system, but the good news is that it should move
out early Friday morning, setting the stage for a nice race weekend.
Halloween trick or treaters will find nearly perfect conditions
Saturday night. Race day looks perfect.

TROPICS: The disturbance over the Bahamas hasn't been able to
develop because of dry air. It will be absorbed by a frontal system
off the East Coast. The Air Force Reserve recon mission has been
cancelled.

MOSCOW SNOW WATCH: The Mayor of Moscow has promised no major snows in
the Russian city this winter. He has authorized the Russian Air Force
to seed the clouds in storm systems destined for the city. My
prediction: there will be some fired Russian Air Force officers before
this winter is over. We will be watching.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's show will feature a fun visit with the
original cast of the PBS show AM Weather, from the 70s and 80s. I
will also have a look back at the top ten takeaways from the National
Weather Association meeting in Norfolk last week. The panelists will
weigh in with their opinions on the research. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 200: Normally residents of the northern Plains don't
have to worry about snow shovels and snowmobiles until later in the
season, but a freak blizzard dropped one foot of snow on parts of the
area on this date in 2001. Drifts piled up to two feet across the
area. Grand Forks, ND reported eleven inches of snow to establish a
new October snowfall record. Schools were closed and four hundred
motorists were stranded on I-29 north of Fargo, ND. The same powerful
storm system also produced an outbreak of severe weather across the
Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. At least twelve tornadoes touched
down during the afternoon hours across parts of northern Indiana,
southern Lower Michigan and western Ohio, including two F3 tornadoes.
Several of the tornadoes had path lengths of at least thirty miles.
The outbreak of tornadoes was the largest in the area in 27 years.
One person died in LaPorte County, IN. Follow my weather history

...A Cool Saturday...

Cooler air moved into Alabama overnight behind a cold front. Low
clouds accompanied the cooler air into the state, and those clouds
will hang tough for much of the morning. Clearing should reach
western sections by late morning, and progress across the state
through mid-afternoon. Highs will be in the 50s where it remains
cloudy much of the day, with 60s where it is sunnier. It will be
breezy.

SUNDAY: After a morning start near 40, Sunday promises to be a sunny
and mild day with an afternoon high near 70. Lows Sunday night will
be back in the middle 40s.

THE WEEK AHEAD Monday looks seasonally perfect with partly cloudy
skies and a high in the lower 70s. Look for a chance of showers
Monday night into early Tuesday as a system zips by to our north.
Wednesday will see a quick return of moisture as a big storm system
heads our way. It will bring a chance of rain and storms Thursday
into early Friday, but be gone for race weekend.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: UAB will be in Huntington, West Virginia to play
Marshall at 11:00 a.m.today. Look for a good chance of showers with a
peak temperature of 62. Miles College will be in Frankfort, Kentucky
to play Kentucky State at 1:00 p.m.: about a 30% chance of showers and
temperatures falling through the 50s. Tennessee visits Alabama at 2:30
p.m. Expect partly sunny or clearing skies, temps in the 60s at kick
off and 50s at the end. Similar weather in Montgomery when Alabama
State plays Alcorn and in Jacksonville where East Illinois will play
Jax State. Auburn will be at LSU for a 6:30 p.m. kick off. Clear and
cool, 63 at kick off and falling into the 50s.

TROPICS: The disturbance over the western Caribbean will move slowly
northward toward the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. There is a
chance that a tropical depression could form and affect the West Coast
of Florida by Tuesday. Another disturbed weather area over the
Bahamas will move to Miami by Sunday before getting absorbed by a
frontal system and pulled northward toward the Carolinas. Air Force
Reserve recon is on call for this afternoon just in case.

WEATHERBRAINS: National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read was our
guest on Monday. It was a thrill to interview him live from the
National Weather Association meeting. More news from the NWA Monday
night in episode 196, along with an AM Weather Reunion with
meteorologists Joan von Ahn and Carl Weiss! Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Category Three Hurricane Wilma made landfall on
the Southwest Coast of Florida just south of Marco Island and cut like
a buzz saw through the southern part of the state. It was the eighth
hurricane to strike Florida since 2004. The Florida Keys received a
battering from storm surge caused by Wilma. It was the fourth time
that the island chain had been evacuated during the 2005 hurricane
season. Less than 10 percent of the 78,000 residents in the Keys
actually evacuated, disappointing emergency officials there. Follow
my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Four Mostly Dry Days...

COOLER AIR MOVING IN: Another in a series of cool fronts was moving
almost due east across Alabama this afternoon. For the most part, our
rain is over. The long line of showers that moved ever so slowly from
Arkansas and Louisiana yesterday was in West Georgia this afternoon.
Rain amounts over most of Alabama were not nearly as much as we had
earlier anticipated. Most amounts were between ¼ and ½ inch. At
Cottondale in Tuscaloosa County, the 0.62 brought the total for 2009
to an amazing 63.71 inches. Clouds will be in and out through tonight,
but the clouds may thicken again before daybreak as the cooler air
continues to move in. For Saturday, we believe the clouds will hang
tough almost all morning, but we should get some sun breaking through
during the afternoon. The timing on the sunshine makes a lot of
difference in the high temperature. We are calling for a high of only
58. If the clouds were to stay in place all day, that high could just
as well be 54, but we believe 58 is more likely and even some 60s in
some parts of the state.

Our coolest morning will be Sunday morning with a low of 39. That
could mean some mid 30s in the colder NE Alabama valleys. The next
rain expected will be a few showers about Monday night.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks like no rain for the high school games
tonight, but some of the fields may still be wet. Brisk, NW wind means
take a jacket. The temperature should fall into the 50s before the
game is over, especially over the western part of the state. Not as
cool in the east. In college football, UAB will be in Huntington, West
Virginia to play Marshall at 11:00 a.m. Look for cool weather with 58
at kick off rising to 62 with a chance of a shower. Miles will be at
Frankfort, Kentucky playing Kentucky State at 1:00 p.m. Rather cool—
about 50 at kick off and maybe a shower during the game. Here in
Alabama, Alcorn State will be at Alabama State in Montgomery and East
Illinois will play Jacksonville State. It should be about 66 in
Montgomery and 59 in Jacksonville. Tennessee meets Alabama in
Tuscaloosa at 2:30. Mostly sunny. Temperatures in the 60s and lowering
to 48 to 50 at the end. Auburn is at LSU for a 6:30 night game. Clear
pleasant weather with about 68 at kick off and 48 to 50 at the end.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: Lots of heavy rain reports in the central
part of the country in the last 24 hours. Two sample reports include 4
inches at Alexandria, Louisiana and 2.23 at DesMoines. 94 at Indio,
California was the Thursday hot spot. Lows this morning included 10 at
Nome, Alaska and 18 at Lymon, Colorado. Lymon is not in the mountains.
It is out on the Eastern Colorado Plains, so that probably occurred
over a snow cover.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is retrograding to
some of her early day habits. She now expects a walk around the track
the minute those little paws hit the floor. I am usually halfway
through my second cup of coffee and do not want to go anywhere. If I
do not respond right away, she knocks the fool out of that little bell
hanging from the backdoor knob. She had already learned how to do that
before we got her 7 years ago. Sometimes she draws back with her right
front paw and hits the bell so hard that it goes up and hits the
doorknob. She gets results in a hurry. Life goes on.

...Rain Moves Out This Afternoon...

RAIN TAPERS OFF THIS AFTERNOON: We begin the day with rain and
thunderstorms across the state; we are still projecting storm totals
between one and two inches. The good news is that the air will be
relatively stable, and we don't expect any organized severe weather
problems. The rain will end from west to east during the afternoon,
and it now looks like most of the rain will be out of the state by
7:00 this evening. Clouds will linger through the night, and
temperatures will turn cooler with a brisk northwest wind.

THE WEEKEND: I sure get the idea clouds will hang tough over much of
North Alabama tomorrow; if we are lucky we might see some sunshine
tomorrow afternoon, but no promises. The day will be rather blustery
with a brisk northwest wind and temperatures holding in the 50s all
day. The sky will clear tomorrow night, and Sunday will feature ample
sunshine and a high close to 70 degrees.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are now confident the rain will be over for most
of the high school games around the state tonight, although some
lingering light rain will be possible during the first half for
stadiums near the Georgia border. Otherwise, the weather will be
cloudy and cool with temperatures falling from the low 60s into the
50s by the fourth quarter.

Tomorrow, UAB will be in Huntington, West Virginia to play Marshall at
11:00 a.m. A good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm with a
kickoff temperature of 60 degrees. Tennessee plays Alabama at 2:30
p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, expect gradual clearing
during the game with a kickoff temperature around 60, falling into the
mid to upper 50s at the final whistle. Auburn will be at LSU for a
6:30 p.m. kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Clear and cool
weather is the story with 63 degrees at kick off and falling into the
50s during the second half.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will pass through Alabama early in the
week, but there is very limited moisture place. It might bring a
shower or two Monday night, but rain should be light and spotty. The
weather looks dry and mild Tuesday and Wednesday, but another storm
system will bring rain and storms back to the state before the week is
over, on Thursday, Friday, or maybe even both days.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Thunderstorms brought 2.36" of rain to
Shreveport yesterday; a few tornadoes were reported over the southern
half of Louisiana. A tornado touched with in the community of Elton,
Louisiana, uprooting trees, blowing down power lines and overturning
at least one tractor-trailer traveling on Interstate 10. Hottest place
in the nation was Santa Ana, CA with 94 degrees; coldest spot was
Buckland, Alaska with 0 degrees. Coldest in the "lower 48" was
Shirley Basin, Wyoming with 14.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic remains quiet, and tropical storm
formation is not expected through the weekend. Sea water temperatures
have cooled into the upper 60s near the Gulf Coast, pretty much
eliminating the risk of a major hurricane around here.

...Quick Changes Ahead...

THE WEATHER MARCHES ON: Seemingly never a dull moment in the weather
office this autumn. Most of the time, this is a docile time of the
year weatherwise. This afternoon we are watching a line of strong
thunderstorms with locally heavy rain taking its time to move eastward
from Arkansas to Louisiana. A Tornado Watch was posted until after
midnight for much of Louisiana and a part of extreme SW Mississippi.
More later.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN FOR ALABAMA? Some showers will reach the
western part of the state by this evening. Showers and storms will
become more numerous late tonight, especially after midnight. Some
will have locally heavy rain. It looks like the main showers and
storms on Friday will be through the morning and early afternoon then
diminish late in the day.

ANOTHER COOL FRONT IN OUR PICTURE: It will come through early
Saturday and give us some partly sunny, breezy and cool weather during
the day. It will be rather chilly Saturday night as temperatures drop
to near 40 with some upper 30s in the cooler valleys. Sunday should
feature mostly sunshine. We believe that from the time the showers
start tonight and end late Friday or early Friday evening, Central
Alabama could get between 1 and 2 inches of rain. A few of the storms
could be strong, but at this time we do not see a significant risk of
severe weather. The strongest storms will be south.

SEVERE WEATHER: Since 10:00 this morning, there have been at least 16
Tornado Warnings issued in Louisiana and a number of Flash Flood
Warnings. Several tornadoes were spotted. One of those moved across
I-10 near Jennings in Jefferson Parish. The tornado blew cars off I-10.

DEADHORSE: Always like to mention Deadhorse. They were reporting
blowing snow and freezing fog today with visibility only one-half
mile, a zero wind chill and gusts to 47 mph. Barter Island had east
winds to 55 mph and 23 degrees. Around the USA, extremes in the last
24 hours included 97 at Desert Center, California yesterday to 18 this
morning at Laramie, Wyoming and 3 at Buckland, Alaska. I am amazed at
how the big drought areas of Central and South Texas have made such a
turn around in the last couple of months. Several roads around San
Antonio were closed this morning as rain came down at 2 inches an hour
in some areas. There was 5.49 inches of rain at Burnet and 4 inches at
Ft. Worth Meacham Field.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: There is a chance that most high school games
tonight can be played before the rain gets here, although the extreme
western part of the state may not be dry through the entire game. Mild
temperatures. For Friday night games, it now appears that most of the
rain will have ended or tapered off, but fields will be wet. On
Saturday, UAB will be in Huntington, West Virginia to play Marshall at
11:00 a.m. A good chance of showers with a peak temperature of 62.
Miles College will be in Frankfort, Kentucky to play Kentucky State at
1:00 p.m. About a 30% chance of showers and temperatures falling
through the 50s. Tennessee at Alabama at 2:30 p.m., partly sunny or
clearing, in the 60s at kick off and 50s at the end. Similar weather
in Montgomery when Alabama State plays Alcorn, also in Jacksonville
where East Illinois will play Jack State. Auburn will be at LSU for a
6:30 p.m. kick off. Clear and cool. 63 at kick off and falling into
the 50s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly amazes me a lot of the
time (it does not take much to do that). I am convinced that when she
goes for her main morning bathroom walk and again in the late
afternoon, that she has a mental checklist of the spots where she
wants to leave a few drops and certain stops to hope for her friends
to see her. She knows where everybody lives who love her, so this
morning she stopped where Dino lives and peered through the backdoor
window where she can often see him pressing his nose against the
window wanting to get out. Molly cried when he was not there. She also
cried behind the home of a lady that always gives her a belly rub.
Life goes on. Sometimes with minor disappointments.

...Soaking Rain Tonight and Tomorrow...

WET WEATHER RETURNS: Clouds will continue to thicken across Alabama
today in advance of a storm system moving out of the Southern Plains.
A few showers could break out this afternoon, but the bulk of the rain
will come tonight and tomorrow. The rain could be heavy at times,
thanks to a tropical connection due to moisture from former Hurricane
Rick (an East Pacific storm), and we figure most Alabama communities
will average one to two inches of rain during the next 48 hours. Some
thunder and lightning is likely, but the risk of organized severe
weather looks small right now with only limited instability values.
The rain will end from west to east tomorrow night.

THE WEEKEND: Improving weather headlines our weekend forecast; the sky
will become partly sunny Saturday with a high in the
low 60s; Sunday looks nice with ample sunshine and a high not too far
from 70.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Rain is likely for high school football games
tonight over the western third of the state, but we can't rule out a
shower over the eastern half as well. Then, for the Friday night
games, the rain will be ending during the games from west to east.
There is a chance the rain will be over by the time the games kick off
in West Alabama tomorrow night, but no guarantee. Don't forget we are
projecting one to two inches of rain during the day tomorrow, so the
fields will be pretty sloppy one way or another. I would plan on
taking rain gear both nights.

Saturday, Alabama will host the Tennessee Volunteers for a 2:30
kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium… we expect a partly sunny sky with a
kickoff temperature near 63 degrees, falling into the upper 50s by the
fourth quarter. Auburn plays LSU at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge
Saturday night (6:30 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be clear with a
kickoff temperature near 68 degrees, falling into the low 60s by the
final whistle. UAB will play at Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia
Saturday (11:00 a.m. kickoff); rain is likely during the game, along
with the possibility of a thunderstorm. The kickoff temperature will
be close to 58, rising into the low 60s during the game.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough could kick off a few showers around here
late Monday and Monday night, but moisture will be very limited and
the rain should be light and spotty. Then, dry weather is expected
Tuesday and Wednesday before the next round of rain and storms on
Thursday and Friday.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our
annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday
November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International
Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the
nation, our own Brian Peters. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by
3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no
admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there
early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Back To Wet Weather...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of being very thankful for several
days of utopia weather with crisp clear skies, cool and even frosty
nights, and great visibility.

As always, it cannot last forever, so here we go back to what we are
most used to this year—another rain event. Clouds had already spread
east across the Mississippi River this afternoon and clouds will be
increasing across Alabama overnight. It will not be as cool with lows
by morning in the mid 50s. Not much sunshine for Thursday with highs
in the mid 70s. There will be a chance of showers at some point in the
afternoon with showers and thunderstorms increasing Thursday night.
Friday looks to be our main event for wet weather and a lot of rain
along with a few thunderstorms. Rain will be heavy at times. Over the
48-hour period from Thursday afternoon through Friday, Central Alabama
stands a good chance of getting about 1.50 inches of rain.

THE WEEKEND: Very much like last weekend. A cool front will have
passed through most of the state overnight Friday and will be
pushing into the North Gulf of Mexico. This will give us brisk NW
winds of 10-20 mph and cooler temperatures. Clouds will hang tough for
part of the day, but we now look for some afternoon sunshine on
Saturday. Because of that, we have raised our high temperature for
Saturday to 63 instead of 59. Sunday should be a day that we all like
with mostly sunshine, cool morning with a low of 44 and a high near
70. Monday and Tuesday also look dry with pleasant temperatures.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Rick used to be a real powerhouse
sporting sustained winds of 160 mph or greater making him a Category
5. Today he is only a shadow of himself and has been downgraded to a
tropical depression fighting the mountains of Western Mexico. He may
still dump up to 10 inches of rain in some of those mountainous
locations. We may not get as much moisture entrained into our weather
system as earlier expected. Down in the SW Caribbean in Central
America, a large low-pressure area is producing showers with locally
heavy rains over a large area. There is only a small chance that it
could become a tropical depression at least for the next two days.

BARROW, ALASKA: Getting real cold in the Far North country. Barrow
this afternoon was reporting 17 degrees with snow and blowing snow and
a wind chill of 1 below. They have 3 inches on the ground. Good old
Deadhorse was reporting 20 with snow and freezing fog. The coldest in
the USA this morning was 3 at Tanana, Alaska and 20 at Stanley, Idaho.
Guyman, Oklahoma was the hottest Tuesday with 91. It is going to be
very interesting to start paying close attention to Alaska and the
Yukon Territory of NW Canada to watch for big cold air build-ups. I
have always believed that when the pressure in that area reaches
1050mb and the temperature about 50 below, that we have a greater
chance of all that rushing south and eventually reaching Alabama. No
real scientific proof.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly, now over 7 years old,
seems to be in the best of health and I am so thankful. Someone asked
me yesterday if she had arthritis yet. No sign of that, because she
has explosive acceleration and seems to never get tired of ballgames
and walking around the track so fast that I have to lean back on the
leash. Someone has said that one of the best psychiatrists in the
world is your little dog licking your face. I sure do believe that.
Since I have been doing all of the Molly walking lately, I have lost
14 pounds in 3 weeks. Some of that is due to having all 150 of my
teeth pulled to prepare for full dentures. I have been living on
smashed potatoes, soup, some ice cream, Vienna sausage and Buffalo
Rock. Not bad. I could live on that forever. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Tomorrow Night...

ONE MORE NICE DAY: We will be able to squeeze out one more fantastic
fall day across Alabama, as we are forecasting a good supply of
sunshine today with a high up in the mid 70s. The humidity will stay
low, and the visibility remains excellent.

TO THE WEST: A storm system will continue to strengthen over the
nation's mid-section, and moisture from East Pacific Tropical Storm
Rick will become entrained in the system tomorrow, adding to the rain
potential. Clouds will begin to increase across our state tomorrow in
advance of the system, and a few showers could enter the western
counties by afternoon. Rain and storms will become more widespread
statewide tomorrow night.
Friday promises to be a wet day with periods of rain and a few
thunderstorms. Instability values appear marginal for a really serious
severe weather threat, but the rain could be heavy at times with the
tropical moisture involved. We project rain amounts between one and
two inches between tomorrow night and Friday night, and there will be
a risk of rain and storms at the high school football games both
nights. The rain will end late Friday night.

THE WEEKEND: Clouds will linger much of the day Saturday as cooler air
invades the state on brisk north winds. Temperatures will hold in the
50s most of the day, and a little lingering light rain is possible
Saturday morning, mainly across the Tennessee Valley of extreme North
Alabama. The sky will clear Saturday night, and sunshine returns in
full force Sunday with a high in the upper 60s.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will bring some clouds to Alabama Monday,
but for now the air looks too dry for any significant chance of rain.
The dry weather should continue through Wednesday, but another wet
weather system is due in here around Thursday of next week with a
chance of showers and thunderstorms.

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Bullhead City, AZ
with 94; coldest was Kaltag, Alaska with 4 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1743: Benjamin Franklin makes the revolutionary
discovery that the wind in storm systems rotate in a counter clockwise
direction. Franklin was waiting in Philadelphia that night to view a
lunar eclipse, but had his opportunity foiled by a nor'easter that
blocked the sky with clouds. Franklin later discovered that his
brother in Boston was able to observe the eclipse clearly and that the
storm did not arrive at his location until four hours later. It
puzzled Franklin that the system seemed to move from southwest to
northeast even though winds at his location were from the northeast.
He theorized that the winds in the storm system must have been
rotating around a center. A brilliant deduction considering he had no
satellite to show his the big picture!

...One More Day of Sunshine...

AUTUMN COLOR NOW SHOWING: Took a drive all the way across Deerfoot
Parkway to Old Springville Road this morning. About 10 trees at the
west end of Deerfoot are in full color. Sure was glad to get a great
report from my doctor at that location. We will now see autumn color
become more prominent at a faster pace after two very chilly nights in
a row. We have a report from atop Mt. Cheaha that the autumn color is
beginning to look good. I have an idea that one of my favorite drives,
up the Paint Rock River in extreme North Alabama, is also looking
good. This afternoon the Mt. Cheaha Skycam was aimed generally toward
the south and you could see that range of mountains for miles and also
some autumn color.

BACK TO THE WEATHER: This is supposed to be a weather story, not a
travelogue, so we should talk weather. Another clear cool night
tonight but not as chilly as last night with lows in the 40s. Another
day of mostly sunshine Wednesday with highs in the mid 70s. Highs will
be in the 70s both Thursday and Friday, but we will have to deal with
some showers and thunderstorms. There may be a few showers by Thursday
afternoon, but they should become numerous late Thursday night
especially after midnight. Friday should be our main day of adverse
weather with showers and thunderstorms, numerous at times, and with
locally heavy rain. We cannot rule out a slight risk of a few strong
storms in the mix, but that is not certain yet. This weekend will not
be unlike last weekend, except the temperature should not be as
chilly. There may be some leftover light rain Saturday morning, but
clouds should decrease by afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 50s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Believe it or not we have something to chat about
in the Atlantic Basin. A low-pressure area over the SW Caribbean is
producing lots of clouds and showers. This system may increase slowly
as it drifts north, but it only has a small chance of becoming a
tropical depression or tropical storm over the next two days. There is
also a chance that a different tropical wave 850 miles west of the
South Cape Verde Islands will also have a rough road. Winds aloft are
unfriendly toward development. Tropical Storm Rick that was once a
powerful Category 5 hurricane, now has sustained winds of only 65 mph.
Latest track forecast is for him to miss Baja, California and instead
move into the west coast of mainland Mexico and then move NE to the NE
part of Mexico. Some of his moisture may eventually get entrained into
the storm system that we expect Thursday night and Friday.

FAIRBANKS: Their high temperature was 26 yesterday and that is the
first day this season that the high failed to reach freezing. They
also report only a trace of snow this month. On average they would
have 7 inches by this time. Elsewhere the low in the lower 48 was 22
at Berlin, New Hampshire. Hottest yesterday 97 at Imperial,
California. A few North and NE Alabama locations had lows between 30
and 32 this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am becoming convinced that my little 9-
pound pal, Little Miss Molly, is getting than me. Lately she has begun
to hide her treats in all parts of the house as if she is preparing
for a cold winter. At times she will grab the treat out of my hand,
almost taking my hand with it, and eat them right away. In the last 24
hours, she has hidden a treat behind the cushion on the couch, another
one under the blanket on the king-size bed, and still another one
pushed as far into the corner of the living area as she can get it.
Early morning walk in the chill at breakneck speed and many changes in
direction. My tongue was semi-hanging out when we got home, but she
immediately started one of her energy explosions where she races in
circles all around the living area and bedroom. Then she grabbed a
ball and slammed it on my foot. So then we had a vicious, fast-paced
ballgame that would put the New York Yankees to shame. Life goes on.

...Rain Before The Week Is Over...

WARMING TREND CONTINUES: Temperatures will continue to warm across
Alabama today; with a sunny sky most spots will wind up in the 67 to
71 degree range this afternoon with low humidity and excellent
visibility. Tomorrow we expect a high in the mid 70s with a good
supply of sunshine as the warming trend rolls along. But, changes are
ahead by the end of the week.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Clouds will increase Thursday in advance of a storm
system that promises to bring one to two inches of rain to our state
at the end of the week. Showers and storms should arrive by Thursday
afternoon, followed by periods of rain and a few thunderstorms
Thursday night, Friday, and Friday night. The rain could very well be
enhanced by moisture from Tropical Storm Rick in the East Pacific;
that plume of moisture will move across Mexico tomorrow, and into the
Deep South by Thursday and Friday. Looks like rain will be an issue
for high school football games across the state both Thursday and
Friday night. While major severe weather problems are not expected,
the rain could be heavy at times on Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: While most of the rain will end late Friday night,
Saturday looks like another blustery beginning to the weekend with
lingering clouds, a chilly north breeze, temperatures holding steady
in the low to mid 50s, and some risk of a little scattered light rain.
The day looks similar to last Saturday, but not quite as cold. The sky
will clear Saturday night, and sunshine will return in full force on
Sunday with a high in the low to mid 60s.

RAIN SCORECARD: Birmingham's rain total since January 1 is 58.60",
giving us a surplus of 15 inches for the year (15.01", to be exact).
The total for the month of October is 6.25", making this the tenth
wettest October on record. We will move up in the "top ten" list by
the end of the week with another 1 to 2 inches of rain expected by then.

EXTREMES: Warmest spot in the nation yesterday was Imperial, CA with
97 degrees; coldest was Fort Yukon, Alaska with 0.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We
encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply
cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30.
And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to
the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and
no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good
seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Preview Of Winter...

A SPARKLE IN THE AIR: This afternoon you could fly from New Orleans to
Birmingham to Charlotte to Washington to New York and Boston and not
see a single cloud. Back in the 1960s, we had a nervous private pilot
that used to visit our weather office frequently for aviation weather
briefings. He would call a day like this severe clear and we got to
where we would call it too. The reason for the sparkle today is a big
high-pressure system centered over Chattanooga, but it extends all the
way from the Louisiana coast to New York. The high being over us all
night allowed the wind to go calm and there was some scattered frost,
especially in the NE Alabama valleys and some of the frost was
moderate to heavy. The colder overnight temperatures were also in that
area, including 27 at Grantley in NE Cleburne County, 28 at Muscadine
and 29 at Scrougeout and Broomtown. In Jefferson County, Pinson had a
low of 30 that tied the record for October 19. (We have a long list of
morning lows posted on the 33/40 BLOG.

NOW WHAT? Look for another cold night, but with temperatures not as
low as last night. There could be some scattered light frost again by
daybreak and maybe some moderate to heavy frost in the colder NE
valleys. We believe the average low temperature tonight will be 3 or 4
degrees higher than last night. Tuesday and Wednesday will be most
enjoyable with chilly early mornings, but milder afternoons. The next
clouds will move in Wednesday night.

NEXT RAIN AND STORMS: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will reach
the area Thursday, possibly later in the day, but becoming more
numerous Thursday night. We look for widespread showers and
thunderstorms on Friday and rain may be heavy at times. Do not be
surprised that later Thursday through Friday, Central Alabama could
get 2 inches more rain. We certainly do not need that, because as of
today Birmingham was still showing a surplus for the year of 15.11
inches. Actually, some of the moisture for our next rain event
Thursday and Friday may come from Hurricane Rick that will be moving
into Baja, California. By Thursday, a new low-pressure area will be
centered over Arkansas and Missouri and also headed east.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Over the weekend, Hurricane Rick became a super
hurricane—a Category 5 with sustained winds of 180 mph. That is
enough to destroy almost everything. Fortunately, he will continue to
weaken before moving into Lower California. He was down to a Category
1 late this morning. No problems in the Atlantic Basin, which includes
our friend, the Gulf of Mexico.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: The Great Smoky Mountains had some very low
temperatures this morning, especially on Mt. LeConte where it dropped
to 17 on that 6,400 peak after a high of only 23 Sunday. Coldest in
the USA was 17 at Saranac Lake, New York and the coldest in Alaska was
1 above at Ft. Yukon.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Did you know that there is an estimated 8
million bolts of lightning striking this old world every day? A lot of
them have amazing temperature of 54,000 degrees.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had me out very early
this morning in a 36-degree temperature and visibility so great I
believe we could have seen to Chattanooga. There was frost in the
grassy area, where she likes to roam. The Old Crow Motel stood out
sharp and clear with the early rising sun. Molly did not seem to get
cold and it was not cold enough for me to wear a coat or even a long-
sleeve shirt. Molly missed seeing her dear friend, the little Yorkie
Dino, yesterday and this morning, but she stopped behind his house and
cried for him to come out. Life goes on.

...Nice October Weather Ahead...

It is the coldest morning of the season so far across Central Alabama,
with temperatures well into the lower 30s in many locations, resulting
in a widespread frost as well as a light freeze in many locations.
Things will start to warm up gradually by this afternoon, and we will
enjoy a fine run of October weather over the next few days before rain
returns late in the week.

LOTS OF SUNSHINE: With a dry airmass and near total sunshine over
the next three days, temperatures will rebound quite nicely. Look for
upper 60s this afternoon. Under clear skies tonight, lows will fall
back into the lower 40s, with a few 30s in the normally colder
locations. 70s will return for your Tuesday, with average afternoon
highs around 73. Wednesday looks to be a nearly perfect day, with a
few clouds returning, but still plenty of sunshine, and highs in the
upper 70s. Those clouds will be the precursor to change as our next
storm system takes shape to the west of Alabama.

RAIN BY THURSDAY: A strong upper trough moving out of the Plains
states will bring rain back into Alabama on Thursday. It looks like
rain could be with us pretty much from Thursday afternoon into late
Friday night. Rainfall amounts across North and Central Alabama could
average two inches before the precipitation ends early Saturday
morning.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday morning should dawn cloudy and damp with a few
lingering showers exiting eastern sections. Skies should clear
during the afternoon. The airmass behind the cold front is not very
cold, so Sunday will actually be mild with a high of 73F.

TROPICS: The Atlantic remains quiet. Rick remains a dangerous, but
slowly weakening category four hurricane in the eastern Pacific. The
storm is moving northwestward and is expected to gradually curve north
and then northeastward toward the southern tip of Baja California,
where it should arrive by early Wednesday. It should still be a 100+
mph hurricane by that time, and hurricane watches will be required for
the Baja and northwestern Mexico this morning. The moisture from Rick
could help produce heavy rains from Texas on northeastward into the
Central Gulf states, including Alabama by late in the week.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, we will talk with National Hurricane Center
Director Bill Read from the National Weather Association Annual
Meeting in Norfolk. Next week, it's an AM Weather Reunion as we
remember the PBS weather show from the 70s and 80s. Dr. Chuck
Doswell, Tim Marshall, Gary England, Roger Hill and BBC Weather
Presenter Hannah Bayman are on the schedule for future weeks. Follow
our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Early snows in mountains of West Virginia,
where 1-2 feet of snow fell near Summersville and Richwood WV. Many
trees still in full foliage were felled by the weight of the snow.
Rain changed to a record setting early, heavy, wet snow over the
southern mountains of West Virginia. Leaves were still on trees,
resulting in the worst forest disaster since the fires of 1952-53.

...Freeze Watch Tonight...

We got off to a chilly start across Central Alabama this morning.
Pinson measured 32F, tying the record for the date. Some other
temperatures across the region included: 34F at Decatur; 35F at the
Birmingham Airport and Huntsville; 36F at Anniston; 37F at Auburn; 38F
at Calera and Montgomery; 40F at Tuscaloosa. It was 33F in Cullman,
Crossville and Fort Payne. Vic Bell in Scrougeout measured 31F with a
heavy frost. SUNNY SUNDAY: Crystal clear skies across the state on
this Sunday. Despite this total sunshine, temperatures will struggle
to make it to 60F, thanks to northerly winds that are still bringing
in colder air. You will notice that northerly breeze, blowing at 7-14
mph today, but no Lake Wind Advisories are necessary, like yesterday.

FREEZE WATCH TONIGHT: It may be 2-3 degrees colder tonight than last
night as winds die down completely. This means that some areas may see
a light freeze overnight. The National Weather Service has issued a
Freeze Watch for areas north of a line from Carrollton to Alabaster to
Lafayette. Folks north of that line should prepare for the possibility
of a light freeze with temperatures dropping to near or just below 32F
for one to four hours. Crops and tender vegetation could be harmed or
killed by this freeze.

WELCOME BACK TO OCTOBER: Once we get through tonight's cold, things
will begin to moderate a bit. We will warm up about 10 degrees on
Monday, with readings reaching the upper 60s on average. Look for lows
in the lower 40s Monday night with 70s making a return appearance for
Tuesday and Wednesday under mostly sunny skies. This will feel more
like the Octobers that we are used to in Alabama.

LATE WEEK STORM: A big trough will swing eastward, bringing us
increased clouds on Thursday with rain and storms Thursday night. It
appears that rain may persist into late Friday night, with some heavy
rainfall possible again.

TROPICS: The Atlantic is quiet. Hurricane Rick in the eastern Pacific
is a monster, achieving category five status last night and continuing
today. Top winds are 175 mph and the central pressure is estimated at
914 mb.

SPECIAL GUEST MONDAY NIGHT: National Hurricane Center Director Bill
Read will be our special guest on WeatherBrains Monday night, live
from the National Weather Association Annual Meeting in Norfolk. Jim
Stefkovich from the NWS BMX will be along as well. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Ivan and Joan both achieved supertyphoon status
in the Pacific east of the Philippines. On this date, Supertyphoon
Ivan had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and Joan had top winds of
180 mph. Typhoons reach "super" status when their top winds reach
150 mph.

...Sunny Sunday...

Greetings from Norfolk, Virginia, site of the 2009 National Weather
Association Annual Meeting. Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist in Charge of
the Birmingham National Weather Service Office is here, as well as
some other local weather folks. We will be taking careful notes about
the event, because the Magic City will host it in October 2011. I will
be blogging and tweeting all week from the meeting. Catch my tweets
@wxhistorian on Twitter.com.

RECORD HIGH YESTERDAY: We added a new record on Saturday at the
Birmingham Airport, a record high temperature for October 17th. Not
the kind of record high that you normally think of: a record cool high
of 51F. The previous record was 55F in 1943.

NICE SUNDAY: Skies cleared overnight across the state, setting the
stage for a sunny Sunday. Overnight lows managed to make it into the
30s in many locations, but a persistent northwest wind limited the
potential for frost. Still, some more protected locations will wake up
to some frost on the pumpkin this morning. With a northerly flow
continuing across the area today, temperatures will only be able to
rise into the upper 50s, despite total sunshine.

FREEZE WATCH: Those northerly winds will relax tonight. With
temperatures falling back into the lower and middle 30s, widespread
frost is expected. In fact, areas north of a line from Carrollton to
Alabaster to Roanoke may actually experience a freeze overnight. Keep
that in mind if you have any tender vegetation that might be
susceptible to a light freeze.

THE WEEK AHEAD: After the chilly start Monday morning, temperatures
will make it back into the upper 60s by afternoon. No worries about
frost Monday night and we will be back in the 70s on Tuesday as a more
typical run of October weather gains momentum. Wednesday will be sunny
as well, but clouds will return on Thursday with storms Thursday night.

TROPICS: The Tropical Atlantic continues to be extremely quiet. No
real signs of tropical development in the Atlantic over the next two
weeks. In the eastern Pacific, Hurricane Rick is one formidable storm.
Rick became a category five hurricane late Saturday afternoon as it
steamed northwestward off the Mexican coast. The hurricane is expected
to gradually weaken, but should still be a hurricane when it reaches
the coast of Baja California by late Wednesday or Thursday.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: Bill Read, the Director of the National
Hurricane Center will join me live Monday night from Norfolk on
WeaterBrains. Thanks to Jim Stefkovich for setting that up. Follow
WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Rainfall weary residents of Taunton,
Massachusetts warily eyed a wooden dam on the rain swollen Mill River
River that was in danger of breaking. Engineers tried to avert
disaster by opening floodgates on the 173 year old Whittenton Pond
Dam. An evacuation order was issued for the city of 50,000 people.
