...Nice Saturday Afternoon...

Skies have become mostly sunny across Alabama on this early February
Saturday. A disturbance passing to the north of the state has pushed
a weak cool front through the area. Winds have shifted to the
northwest and drier air is flowing into Alabama, chasing the few
clouds from the morning away. Temperatures will peak around 60
degrees despite the northerly winds. We are beginning to experience
the increasing warmth of an increasing sun as we head toward spring.

TONIGHT: Clear skies will continue overnight with a
light brotherly breeze continuing. Temperatures will fall in the
lower and middle 30s overnight.

SUNDAY: Sunday should be another nice day, with
temperatures warming to near 60 despite a sometimes breezy northerly
wind. Skies will be mostly clear.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will see partly cloudy skies and
a southerly wind developing. A complex storm system will bring
showers back to Alabama during the day on Tuesday, with increasing
rain and a few storms Tuesday night into Wednesday. No severe
weather is expected for us as the low track stays to our south,
although there could be a few rumbles of thunder. Any severe weather
should be limited to the Gulf Coast. Rain will stay with us through
much of Wednesday, finally moving out on Thursday as the low pressure
systems moves out to the northeast. Drier and slightly cooler air
will move in for the weekend.

NATIONALLY: Low pressure moving through the Great Lakes
is bringing snow and blowing snow across the Upper Midwest, including
parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa down into the Chicagoland and
over into Michigan. Rain and snow showers are occurring ahead of the
associated cold front from Indiana and Ohio into the Northeast.

STORM ALERT 2008 TUESDAY NIGHT: Don't forget, our show
next week will be on Tuesday night at the Northport Civic Center… the
doors open at 5:00, the show begins at 7:00. Bring the whole family!
The Lake Effect Snow Machine will be operating at full force on Sunday
behind the front across the famous snowbelt areas of Pennsylvania and
New York.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: A devastating ice storm struck
Mississippi, Louisiana and extreme northwest Alabama. Freezing rain
began falling across the area during the early morning
hours on the 9th and continued until midday on the 10th. Ice
accumulated 3-6 inches thick on exposed objects in the affected area.
Due to the weight of the ice, power lines, trees and tree limbs were
downed. Many trees fell on houses and automobiles. $1.3 billion of
damage is reported in Mississippi and $13.5 million in Louisiana.
Tremendous damage resulted in commercial timberland with 256,000 acres
damaged in Louisiana and 3.7 million acres damaged in Mississippi.
Twenty five percent of the pecan crop in Mississippi was damaged. Over
750,000 people in Mississippi and 100,000 in Louisiana were without
power on the 10th and 11th, some still without power a month later.
According to the National Weather Service, it was the worst ice storm
in Mississippi since a severe ice storm struck the state in January
1951 and the worst in Louisiana since 1983.

...Nice Weekend...

On the weather maps this morning, we find a minor trough
in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere swinging across
Alabama. This trough is carving out a deeper large scale trough over
the eastern United States. As the disturbance swings by, a dry cold
front will push through the area. Winds will swing around to the
northwest and pick up during the day. But the sun angle is increasing
and the days are getting longer. Our heat budget is on the increase,
so despite the northwesterly winds today, temperatures will not be
much different than yesterday with highs topping out around 60 degrees
this afternoon. Tonight will feature clear and cool conditions with
lows in the lower and middle 30s. Sunday will be another nice day,
with abundant sunshine and highs about the same as today.

START TO THE WEEK: By Monday, high pressure to the
north of Alabama will be shifting to our east. Meanwhile, an upper
trough will be swinging through the Plains states. Monday will
feature winds veering to the southeast, partly cloudy skies and
temperatures in the lower 60s.

SHOWERS AHEAD: Caught in the squeeze between strong high
pressure to the east and the approaching trough from the northwest,
our southerly winds will increase on Tuesday, giving us a breezy and
warmer day with highs in the 60s to near 70. Humidity levels will be
increasing and showers and storms will pick up to the west and
northwest of Alabama. A disturbance at the southern end of the trough
will begin to close off in one of our dreaded upper lows. At the same
time, a surface low will form over southern Louisiana. This low will
take a more southerly track, traveling along the Gulf coast. Showers
will spread into Alabama from the southwest by Tuesday afternoon.
Rain will increase during the overnight into Wednesday. The upper low
will not kick out until early Thursday, so clouds and light rain might
be with us until noon on Thursday.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air will
spread into the area Thursday night and Friday. Another disturbance
will develop along the Gulf coast over the weekend, but most of the
showers should stay to our south. Big weather systems will bring rain
and storms around the 19th, 21st and 24th.

THE BEGINNINGS OF OUR WEATHER SERVICE: "Be it resolved
by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of
American in Congress assembled that the Secretary of War be, and
hereby is, authorized and required to provide for taking
meteorological observations at the military stations in the interior
of the continent and at other points in the States and Territories of
the United States for giving notice on the northern lakes and
seacoasts by magnetic telegraph and marine signals, of the approach
and force of storms." This new law signed into effect on this date in
1870 by President Ulysses S. Grant created a national weather
service. The first observations would be transmitted the following
November 1st and storm warnings issued for mariners on the Great
Lakes. Read all about it in my weather history post on our
alabamawx.com blog.

NO BITTER COLD FOR A WEEK: Tornado clean up continues across North
Alabama today, as well as some other Southern states. The death toll
in North Alabama has risen to 5. The death toll for all of the storms
is up to around 59. There are still some people missing. Before we get
into current weather, the NWS/SPC (Storm Prediction Center) based in
Norman, Oklahoma should be commended for an excellent outlook on this
tragic event and with plenty of lead time. They mentioned early on
that the situation was ripe for some violent long-track tornadoes.

Back to the present. It looks like a very nice weekend in Alabama, if
you do not mind some chilly nights. We do not have any rain in the
local forecast until late Tuesday. Our best chance of rain should be
about Tuesday night and Wednesday morning when there will also be some
thunderstorms involved. We could easily get 1 inch of rain from those
storms. We need repeated rain events to fill up the reservoirs. March
is traditionally one of the wettest months of the year. April is
fairly wet, but the showers tend to become less frequent later in the
month. We can also get some decent rain in February.

With mostly clear skies through Monday, we expect night time lows to
be in the 30s and afternoon highs mostly in the lower 60s. High
temperatures will back off a bit to the upper 50s on Sunday.

TORNADO PHOTOGRAPHS: Some excellent photographs have been posted on
the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog concerning the recent tornadoes in Alabama.
The destruction was severe in several areas and both the Lawrence
County and Jackson County tornadoes have been rated as EF4—next to the
top of the line.

STORM ALERT 2008: It was in Anniston last night with a huge crowd.
This week it will be on Tuesday night instead of Thursday night at the
Northport Civic Center. It starts at 7:00.

WATCHING A BITTER COLD AIR MASS: It has been a long time since the
weather was so consistently bitter cold over such a wide area of
Canada and Alaska. Even the polar bears at Churchill, Manitoba are
trying to build bonfires. The temperature today has been hovering at
63 below zero in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada with the barometric
pressure approaching 31 inches. If everything falls into place (upper
air, etc.), there could be a big break out deep into the United
States. It was 62 below zero this morning at Nuiqsut, Alaska and 61
below at Chalkyitsik. Very heavy rain on top of a snow cover continues
to cause major flooding in NW Ohio and parts of Illinios and Indiana.
Over 3 inches of rain in some locations.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Had a long telephone chit -chat with my
sister-in-law in Layton, Utah this morning. She reports that snow is
up to the top of their curbside mailbox. They have to use a snow
blower to give the postman access. They own two Shih-Tzus, like Little
Miss Molly, and they have cleared out only a small area for the
doggies to go to the bathroom outdoors. It was their little Megan that
taught Little Miss Molly how to ring the little doorbell when she
needs to go potty. Little Miss Molly has had a lot of fun today. I
overdosed her on ballgames. Even so, she was ready to play again in
about 30 minutes. Life goes on....

...A Mostly Sunny Weekend...

WE NEED A BREAK: The drought is still with us unfortunately. There
are still parts of the state that are under a D4 drought designation,
which is called Exceptional. It is true that we have received some
good rain events lately, so that drought designation may sound
misleading. It is true that the topsoil moisture has improved greatly.
It is also true that some streams and reservoirs have improved some,
but the ground water situation and most of the reservoirs still cry
out for rain. Our next chance of rain will be toward the middle of
next week. The best chance of all will be Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning. There is a possibility of a few strong thunderstorms during
that time frame, but it is too early to be specific on that. We will
be getting a break from any bitter cold, also. While we expect lows
mostly in the 30s over the next several days, highs on most days
through next Tuesday will be in the low to mid 60s. Not bad for early
February. In fact, that is 5 to 8 degrees above average.

STORM ALERT 2008: The 33/40 weather crew visited Anniston last night.
The next event will be on Tuesday night instead of Thursday. It is
next Tuesday night at the Northport Civic Center. It is always
recommended that you come early to get a good seat.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Lots of dramatic weather around the good old USA
so far this month. In fact, January was quite interesting also. New
Haven, Vermont got 17 inches of new snow yesterday and Burlington 16
inches. Counting rain and the moisture equivalent of the snow,
Burlington got 3.78 inches of precipitation. Boston received 1.08. An
enormous amount of snow continues to pile up over the Western
mountains, not only in the Pacific Northwest, but also in the Central
Rockies, such as Utah and Colorado. Salt Lake City has received 54
inches of snow this winter—14 inches above average. As much as 2 feet
was forecast in this last storm for the high country of Colorado. The
last big storm in the Midwest also included some rain falling on a
heavy blanket of snow. A large number of counties in Northern
Illinois, Indiana and Michigan had to contend with various flood
problems. The warmest place in the USA yesterday was 88 at Marathon,
Florida. How about that 110-degree high early in the week at Rio
Grande City in South Texas? Bitter, bitter cold continues in the Far
North Country. It was 61 below zero yesterday at Chalkyitsik, Alaska.
It was also around 60 below in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. Out
in Western Alaska, near Juneau, there was 156 inches of snow atop
Eaglecrest.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Not usually any stories about Miss Molly
in the morning edition, but I am subbing for James Spann on the Storm
Alert nights. Nice note from our friends, Robbie and Noel Mize in
Cullman County. They said their dog named Beau has energy spurts like
Little Miss Molly, bouncing off the couch and going through the room
at breakneck speed. One of his tricks is to take one of his toys and
stuff it under the sofa, then look up at Noel and bark for him to come
get it out. Robbie adds that the little animals sure are funny and I
can vouch for that. Molly had five ballgames yesterday. She never gets
enough. Life goes on.

CALM AND COLLECTED: That probably best describes our weather for the
next five days. It looks dry all the way at least through Monday, with
quite a bit of sunshine every day. The nights will be chilly, but
afternoons will be comfortable for early February with most highs
hanging close to the 60-degree mark. Even though we could still use
some rain, I believe every single person in Alabama would vote for
this dry weather in order for cleanup to continue in the tragic
tornadoes. It looks like our next chance of rain will be toward the
middle of next week about Tuesday night and Wednesday, but more so on
Wednesday.

THE TORNADO STORY: Last news report I saw indicated about 55
fatalities in that major February 5 and early February 6 tornado
outbreak. Tennessee was hardest hit. Here in Alabama, it appears the
final death toll will be four. Three of those were in Lawrence County
and one in Jackson County. It appears that the Jackson County tornado
was the most powerful one in the state and has been tentatively rated
as an EF4. Quite often, when tornadoes strike in the irregular terrain
of extreme NE Alabama, they are not the stronger ones. This was an
exception. This one struck near the small community of Rosalie.

TONIGHT IN ANNISTON: It is the second chapter of Storm Alert 2008 at
the Anniston City Meeting Center at 7:00 p.m. The doors open at 5:00.
The entire ABC 33/40 weather team will be there and admission is free.

SNOW REPORT: As much as 19 inches of snow fell yesterday over parts
of Northern Illinois. They have really caught it this year. In Chicago
at O'Hare Airport, nearly 5 more inches fell yesterday bringing their
total for this season to 41 inches. Normal, by February 7, is 24
inches. At Rockford, Illinois, they got 10 inches yesterday. They have
had 58 inches so far this winter—an excess of 32 inches. Out west,
10-18 inches is expected tonight in the Northern Wasatch Mountains of
Utah with some places getting 24 inches. In Colorado, 18 to 36 inches
of new snow is forecast on the NW basin slopes in places like Rabbit
Ears Pass and Vail Pass. All of this with 50 mph wind gusts. 10 more
inches of snow overnight at Alta, Utah with 126 inches now on the
ground.

COLD WEATHER REPORT: I am very impressed with how long the bitter
cold is holding on in the Far North Country. It was 61 below zero this
morning at Chalkyitsix, Alaska and 60 below at Ft. Yukon. It was also
60 below at Mayo in the Canadian Yukon. Nome, Alaska has 46 inches of
snow on the ground. Fairbanks was reporting 46 below with freezing fog
and a wind chill of 66 below. Even James Spann would wear a coat and a
hat in that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, sometimes known
as Little Miss Molly, is over joyed to get her ball field back.
Translation: the main living area of her home. That is where she has
had literally hundreds of exciting ballgames in her life. Yesterday
she noticed that we had piled all of her toys, which includes about 7
balls, in her little bed. She ran across the room and dove into the
pile of balls and slung them everywhere. She made sure she drop kicked
some of them so they rolled up against my feet so I would play. After
a vigorous ballgame, she went on one of her famous energy explosions.
For 5 to 7 minutes, she raced around the house so fast that her tail
was sticking out behind her and you could hear her claws digging into
the carpet when she changed direction. Life goes on.

...Calm Through The Weekend...

DRY DAYS AHEAD: After a historic tornado outbreak Tuesday night and
early Wednesday morning, a calm weather pattern returns to the Deep
South for the rest of the week. We expect ample sunshine today across
Alabama with a high in the mid 50s, right at average values for
February 7. The dry weather continues tomorrow and Saturday with a few
scattered clouds and afternoon temperatures up in the low 60s. Then,
over the weekend, a shot of colder air drops into the state on
Sunday, which will knock the afternoon high down to near 50 degrees by
Sunday. The colder air will also be dry, so the dry spell continues
all the way through the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: The latest medium range computer model data now holds off
the next chance of rain until around Thursday of next week, when a few
thunderstorms could be involved.

DEATH TOLL CONTINUES TO RISE: As of last night, the national death
toll from the tornado outbreak was up to 54 after two more victims
were found in Tennessee. Fatalities were reported in four states; four
here in Alabama, 13 in Arkansas, 7 in Kentucky, and 30 in Tennessee.
The newest deaths were reported in Sumner County, Tennessee, where two
victims were found outside a house that had been blown away by the
storm.

ABC 33/40 meteorologist Brian Peters, who is part of a special quick
response team on call by the National Weather Service, was dispatched
to Jackson County, in Northeast Alabama, yesterday, and helped to
determine that the tornado that moved through the area between Pisgah
and Rosalie was an EF4 on the enhanced Fujita scale. One person was
killed by this tornado, and the estimated wind speed was 180 mph.
Brian reports this was the worst damage he was seen since the April 8,
1998 F5 tornado in the western part of Jefferson County. The maximum
path width was 3/8 mile.

The other three Alabama fatalities came in Lawrence County, near the
community of Aldridge Grove. The NWS rated this tornado as an EF3 on
the enhanced Fujita scale. There were 20 to 25 injuries in association
with this storm.

Farther to the south, an EF2 tornado moved along a region near the
Fayette/Tuscaloosa County line, and then into Walker County. Some of
the hardest hit areas included New Lexington, Berry, and Oakman. There
were some minor injuries, but many people were able to hear the
tornado warnings and moved to a place of safety.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour will be at
the Anniston City Meeting Center tonight… we begin at 7:00, but the
doors open at 5:00. Come early and meet the weather team; you will see
some amazing Alabama weather stories, and have a chance to win some
great prizes. No admission fee; bring the whole family!
