...A Mostly Sunny Weekend...
WE NEED A BREAK: The drought is still with us unfortunately. There
are still parts of the state that are under a D4 drought designation,
which is called Exceptional. It is true that we have received some
good rain events lately, so that drought designation may sound
misleading. It is true that the topsoil moisture has improved greatly.
It is also true that some streams and reservoirs have improved some,
but the ground water situation and most of the reservoirs still cry
out for rain. Our next chance of rain will be toward the middle of
next week. The best chance of all will be Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning. There is a possibility of a few strong thunderstorms during
that time frame, but it is too early to be specific on that. We will
be getting a break from any bitter cold, also. While we expect lows
mostly in the 30s over the next several days, highs on most days
through next Tuesday will be in the low to mid 60s. Not bad for early
February. In fact, that is 5 to 8 degrees above average.
STORM ALERT 2008: The 33/40 weather crew visited Anniston last night.
The next event will be on Tuesday night instead of Thursday. It is
next Tuesday night at the Northport Civic Center. It is always
recommended that you come early to get a good seat.
THE WORLD AROUND US: Lots of dramatic weather around the good old USA
so far this month. In fact, January was quite interesting also. New
Haven, Vermont got 17 inches of new snow yesterday and Burlington 16
inches. Counting rain and the moisture equivalent of the snow,
Burlington got 3.78 inches of precipitation. Boston received 1.08. An
enormous amount of snow continues to pile up over the Western
mountains, not only in the Pacific Northwest, but also in the Central
Rockies, such as Utah and Colorado. Salt Lake City has received 54
inches of snow this winter—14 inches above average. As much as 2 feet
was forecast in this last storm for the high country of Colorado. The
last big storm in the Midwest also included some rain falling on a
heavy blanket of snow. A large number of counties in Northern
Illinois, Indiana and Michigan had to contend with various flood
problems. The warmest place in the USA yesterday was 88 at Marathon,
Florida. How about that 110-degree high early in the week at Rio
Grande City in South Texas? Bitter, bitter cold continues in the Far
North Country. It was 61 below zero yesterday at Chalkyitsik, Alaska.
It was also around 60 below in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. Out
in Western Alaska, near Juneau, there was 156 inches of snow atop
Eaglecrest.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Not usually any stories about Miss Molly
in the morning edition, but I am subbing for James Spann on the Storm
Alert nights. Nice note from our friends, Robbie and Noel Mize in
Cullman County. They said their dog named Beau has energy spurts like
Little Miss Molly, bouncing off the couch and going through the room
at breakneck speed. One of his tricks is to take one of his toys and
stuff it under the sofa, then look up at Noel and bark for him to come
get it out. Robbie adds that the little animals sure are funny and I
can vouch for that. Molly had five ballgames yesterday. She never gets
enough. Life goes on.
