...Brrr!...

A few snow flurries were flying across Northeast Alabama this morning as a strong flow of cold air was continuing out of the north. In Tennessee, some accumulations were reported at Sewanee. A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for parts of eastern Tennessee. Satellite maps show stratocumulus clouds over the northern third of the state. These clouds will stream across parts of the area through the day today. If you're lucky, you might see a snow shower or two, mainly over Northeast Alabama. Temperatures will remain in the 30s all day with a brisk northwest wind. This will produce wind chill values in the 20-25 degree range.

EXTENDED COLD PERIOD AHEAD: We have been preaching about this event for nearly a week now. Temperatures will only be above freezing for a few hours a day at best through Tuesday, with overnight lows well into the teens. In fact, some of the normally colder valleys of North Alabama will likely see single digit readings on some of the nights. Parts of North Alabama may not make it above freezing until Wednesday. This is a serious situation.

PRECAUTIONS: Pipes could become a problem this week because of the long duration of the cold. Remember pets. Make sure they have a warm place, or better yet, bring them inside if possible. Check you vehicles' antifreeze levels. Protect any tender vegetation that could be harmed by temperatures this low. Check on friends, neighbors and family that could be vulnerable to the cold. If you are traveling, make sure to take a blanket in case you experience car trouble. Wear warm layered clothing.

SNOW ON THURSDAY? There is increasing confidence that we will see a weather system roll through Alabama on Thursday. There is a high probability that any precipitation that falls across Central Alabama will be snow. Just how much moisture will be available to the system remains a question. There is a chance that Central Alabama could see a significant 2-4 inch snowfall. Certainly, any snow that does will likely accumulate, due to the cold temperatures we have been experiencing. This is a situation that we will have to begin watching for its impact on Alabama.

BACK IN THE DEEP FREEZE: After Thursday's system passes, temperatures will plummet once again. Readings on Friday will not get out of the 20s, and single digits will be widespread Saturday morning. If we have a snowcover, readings might be near zero. Things should begin to moderate a bit after next weekend. No balmy tropical air, but highs in the 40s will seem like Miami by comparison.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's episode will be recorded on Tuesday morning, because our Guest WeatherBrain is in England! She is Hannah Bayman, a weather presenter for the BBC. We will get the British take on weather in what promises to be an interesting show. Our Guest Panelist will be Brian Neudorff, the NASCAR Weatherman! He works for WROC in Rochester, NY. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1949: Seven weeks of blizzards began striking the American Great Plains almost without letup. Temperatures plummeted to as lows as -50 degrees F. The first blizzard dumped forty one inches of snow on Chadron, NE. The death toll reached 200, but the loss of livestock was unbelievable with 150,000 sheep and cattle perishing during the storms. Operation Haylift was a military operation undertaken to rescue passengers from over fifty stranded passenger trains and drop food and supplies to snowbound ranchers. ...Dangerous Cold Building...

We started preaching about this extended cold spell that we are going to be enduring for the next ten days or longer. And it is increasingly becoming evident that it is going to be a memorable one. I am not sure we have even been aggressive enough with our forecasts of the cold. I hope that everyone will take this protracted cold seriously. It's always serious when you have a couple of nights of subzero readings. But I am not sure that ten days of daytime readings in the middle 30s and lows in the teens are not more damaging. Make sure that you think about the effects such cold could have on your vulnerable property, plants, pets and people and take appropriate precautions. Energy usage will be through the roof, unfortunately, as well.

BROKEN RECORD: A traffic jam in the upper atmosphere will set the stage for a persistent and efficient transport of very cold air out of places like Minnesota over an extensive snowpack and deep into the South. Temperatures in the 40s will be as rare as hen's teeth through the 10th or so. Highs over the next five days will be 37, 38, 36, 35 and 39, and lows will be 23, 17, 13, 12 and 18 on average. But it will be dry.

THE "S" WORD: I am like the rest of you. I grew up living for snow events. When temperatures like this came along back in 1976, 77 and 78, you just prayed for a Gulf low. Snow forecasts are always difficult in Alabama, and I am certain there will be difficult scenarios in the next couple of weeks. One will be Thursday. A reinforcing cold front may spread light snow into Alabama. It is too early to tell if there will
be any accumulations, but warm ground won't be a problem.

BACK IN THE DEEP FREEZE: Some of the coldest air of this outbreak may be next Friday and Saturday morning. Single digits will be very possible Friday and Saturday morning, especially if we end up with any snowcover. Hopefully, things will start to improve by Monday the 11th or so.

WEATHERBRAINS: Joe Bastardi, Todd Foisy and Dr. Joe Schaefer joined the crew for two memorable shows just before Christmas. Our next show will on Tuesday, January 5th, when Hannah Bayman of the BBC will join the crew. Other upcoming Guest WeatherBrains include Mike Nelson from Channel 9 in Denver, Les Lemon, author David Laskin and hurricane expert, Dr. Keith Blackwell. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19 inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Who Left the Door Open?

ARCTIC PIPELINE CANADA TO ALABAMA: The big wide barn door is open all the way from Alabama northward to the Canadian Yukon and Alaska. Checking the old barometer this morning, we found a 1044 MB strong high-pressure area centered over Western Canada. This is the source region of some very cold arctic air. Parts of the Northern USA are already in a deep freeze and it will get progressively colder here in Alabama over the next several days. Between now and toward the end of next week, this will clearly be our coldest weather not only so far this season, but in a long time.

Let us urge you to proceed with protective measures for several hard freezes in a row at night and not very much warmth during the daytime--things like outdoor plumbing, pets and plants. None of my business, but I highly recommend that you bring all of your pets indoors at night even if it turns your house into a zoo. Also check on elderly neighbours and relatives.

The colder air started pouring into Alabama early this morning. There was some scattered light rain overnight, but we did not hear of any snow. It will be clear tonight with a hard freeze by morning with lows averaging around 23 across Central Alabama. The Sunday morning low should be near 20. Our colder temperatures will be Monday morning and Tuesday morning when it will be around 15 and during that time do not be surprised to hear of some lows between 8 and 10 in the NE Alabama valleys. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will not get out of the mid 30s.

THE SNOW SITUATION: We certainly do not want to raise expectations very much, but the latest data we have shows a low-pressure area forming over the Gulf of Mexico and moving NE. It should be centered south of the Alabama coast early Thursday. All of this with a big arctic air mass already in place. There may be some chance of a snow event late Wednesday night and Thursday. It is entirely too early to be specific. We, of course, will watch it closely.

ROAMING THE WORLD: Over on the other side of the North Pole into Siberia, it was 54 below zero today at Ojmjakon. Remember, south of the equator they are well into summer, so I was not surprised to see Nyang Station, Australia reporting 112 degrees today. Back in the good old USA, 61% of the lower 48 had a solid blanket of snow. The Central Plains and Midwest are included and cold arctic air pouring southward from Canada moving across that snow can lower our high temperatures 3 to 5 degrees below what the models think. It was 26 below zero this morning at Williston, North Dakota and 35 below at Bettles, Alaska. Just gotta mention good ole Deadhorse: they were reporting 17 below with snow and blowing snow, 41 mph wind gusts and a wind chill of 50 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the third night in a row, Little Miss Molly was awake much of the night. It all started when I took her out for a bathroom walk at 11:00 p.m. She immediately heard two distant and very faint fireworks sounds. No bathroom for her. She rushed back to the front door wanting in. As the night went on, she was shaking and had that scared look in her eyes. I picked her up and held her in my arms a long time and finally got her to go to sleep. I sure do feel sorry for her. Life goes on.

...Hello 2010...

Cold is the weather word as we head into 2010. The global models indicate that the cold spell may last until the middle of the month! Certainly, it looks like the next seven days will be very cold in Alabama. It is not going to be Earth shattering cold like we experienced in years like 1977, 1982, 1983, 1985 or 1989. Nor as cold as it was during major past cold waves, like 1940. But it will be a protracted cold spell, the likes of which we have not seen very many times in the past 100 years. In fact, if yesterday's afternoon run of the GFS is right, we might not see 40F again after today until January 13th! The extended period of near and below freezing temperatures could cause problems for vulnerable people, pets and property. Begin preparing now.

COLD AIR ARRIVING: Rain moved across parts of the area overnight and into the early morning hours. A few snow flurries are possible early this morning across the area as cold air begins mixing with the back edge of the precipitation. There won't be any problems. Skies will clear from west to east during the day. Temperatures will warm into the lower 40s The mercury will start plummeting by mid-afternoon, and won't stop until it reaches 23F on average tomorrow morning. That could be the warmest low over the next five nights. Bundle up as you head to the Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s. The good news is that it will be dry for the short term.

MIDWEEK WINTRY PRECIP? We don't like to forecast these wintry systems until we see the whites of their eyes, but the next system will bear watching. There are indications that a surface low will track along the Gulf Coast at midweek. It should be south of New Orleans Thursday morning. This could mean wintry precipitation for Central Alabama Thursday. It could be snow, or freezing rain changing to snow, or a wintry mix. We will be watching intently. No other winter storms on the horizon right now in the next 2 weeks.

GOING BOWLING: The Auburn Tigers are in Tampa to take on Northwestern this morning at 10 a.m. CST in the Outback Bowl. An approaching low pressure system and front means showers, especially during the first half. A gusty northerly wind will kick in during the second half. Temperatures will be in the 60s. The rest of the weekend will be dry and cooler in Tampa. 'Bama fans are going to find very agreeable weather in Southern California for the entire week leading up to the BCS National Championship Game. Clear skies through the period, with highs between 68-72. Lows 48-51. That wouldn't be a bad standing weather order.

WEATHERBRAINS: Our guest on January 5th will be Hannah Bayman, a Weather Presenter for the BBC. Other upcoming guests include author David Laskin on the 11th, winter driving expert Dan Robinson on the 18th and legendary radar expert Les Lemon on January 25th. Follow the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Conditions in Dallas were miserable for the Cotton Bowl as Notre Dame lined up to play Houston. Notre Dame was down 34-12 but had the wind at their back as Quarterback Joe Montana led the Irish to one of the greatest comeback wins in college football history. ...Colder and Colder...

GENUINE WINTRY WEATHER: I see very little indication of any short-sleeve shirt weather in the near future. In fact, starting tomorrow and extending all the way through a week from now it looks cold. It may be a week where the shivering backdoor thermometer may not get out of the low 40s even in daytime for an entire week. Here in Central Alabama, we look for our coldest temperatures to start Saturday and continue through the weekend and well into next week. By Saturday morning, the low should be about 24 and then from Sunday through at least Tuesday morning, the low should be in the teens.

Do not be surprised to hear of some morning lows as cold as 10 or 12 degrees in some of the valleys of NE Alabama. We think that after the few flurries late tonight and early Friday, the weather will be generally dry through the weekend.

WHY MUST WE SUFFER WITH THIS COLD: The North American weather profile is taking on a genuine wintry look. I was scouting around in Alaska and Northern Canada this morning and I discovered a temperature of 42 below zero at Watson Lake, Yukon. The surface pressure in the Yukon has built to 1041 mb (translation: a strong high). Cold Arctic air will stream southward in batches during the next week. By late tomorrow the cold front, that will move through our area early tomorrow, will be down in South Florida. Projections are for Sunday morning for some of the colder air to reach all the way across Cuba. That means we will be deep into the cold air here in Alabama.

SNOW FANS DISAPPOINTMENT: Do not see any significant snow during all of this. The light rain in our area this afternoon and tonight could switch over to a little bit of light snow after midnight, but no accumulation. So, let us get ready for a long haul of cold weather. Some of those night low temperatures translate to a damaging freeze. It is time to definitely check your outside plumbing and protect any plants that are fragile and please, please, do not forget your dogs and cats. If it were me, I would not hesitate to bring my dog inside, even if he weighed 90 pounds. Fortunately, our Little Miss Molly weighs only 8 pounds.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Cold temperatures this morning included 12 below at Houlton, Maine and 31 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska...a bad day in good old Deadhorse where the temperature was 23 below and a wind chill of 41 below...over in Siberia, it was 54 below at Ojmjakon, which bills itself as the coldest continuously populated city on earth.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn is in Tampa to play Northwestern in the Outback Bowl tomorrow. They have had good weather for the past several days, but a good chance of showers tomorrow with game-time temperatures in the middle 60s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had another restless night. As soon as she went to bed late last night, she heard it raining on the roof. She is so smart that she translates rain to possible thunder and lightning. So, she goes ahead and goes to one of her numerous safe places. She spent most of the night under the bed. It is now early afternoon and she is still asleep. She swiped my National Geographic blanket and curled up on it. Later this afternoon she will be gung-ho for a 25-inning ballgame and by that time I will be too tired. I will make it up to her tomorrow. Life goes on.

...Extreme Cold Ahead...

My forecast package has gotten increasingly packed, with the concern over the extended period of cold weather heading to Alabama and the folks that are getting the heck out of Dodge before it arrives. So, here's the weather in the smallest readable font I have.

COLDER FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE: The disturbance that brought the rain to Alabama overnight has moved on this morning, taking most of the rain with it. We remain under the influence of a broad trough today, which will keep us mostly cloudy today. There could be a few showers or patches of light rain at times today. Temperatures will be in the 50s. Much colder air will start to move into the state this evening, dropping temperatures to near freezing by morning. A second disturbance will arrive late this evening, and we could see some snow flurries late tonight into early Friday morning. Tonight will be the first Blue Moon (the second full moon in the month) in twenty years. Too bad we probably won't see it. Skies will clear quickly tomorrow, but temperatures will struggle to get out of the 30s.

EXTENDED COLD PERIOD AHEAD: The weather pattern we will be stuck with for the next week will be efficient by funneling cold air out of the Arctic regions into the Deep South. Get used to 30s and 40s for highs, and lower 20s for lows. There will be a couple of mornings with lows in the teens as well, especially early in the week. The dense Arctic air will suppress the storm track well to the south. The GFS has been consistently depicting a storm system next weekend that could bring rain or even some snow to parts of the Deep South, including Alabama.

OUTBACK BOWL FORECAST: The Auburn Tigers are in Tampa to take on Northwestern Friday morning at 10 a.m. CST. Gorgeous weather today there, with sunshine, mild temperatures in the 70s, a little Florida humidity and a nice south breeze. That will change tonight as a cold front approaches, accompanied by scattered showers and storms starting this evening. The low tonight in Tampa will be around 60F. Rain and storms will be likely Friday morning as the cold front pushes trough the area. Rain should end during the game. There will be a northerly wind, with temperatures holding steady in the lower and middle 60s. The rest of the weekend will be dry and cooler.

BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OUTLOOK: We might lose a Congressman over the next few days with so many folks out of state for bowl games. For the contingent heading west on seemingly every train, plane and automobile between now and next Wednesday, here is an early outlook. It's Bill Murray kind of weather through Tuesday with lots of sunshine each day and highs around 72, lows near 50. How boringly wonderful when you have mortgaged the house to go to a football game! A frontal system will be approaching from the north on Wednesday, but it should weaken before it gets to Southern California. There will be more clouds on Thursday, and we can't rule out the chance of a shower, but no major rain expected. Highs should be in the 60s, with lows in the 50s. If you're staying for the weekend, it looks nice as well.

WEATHERBRAINS: After producing two shows last week so everyone could be off this week, we will be back on January 5th with Guest Hannah Bayman, a Weather Presenter across the pond for the BBC. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A man died when his vehicle plunged through thin ice near Anoka, MN. The thin ice was the result of unusually mild temperatures. Seven people had already died because of thin ice accidents across the upper Midwest. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says that ice must be 12-15 inches thick to safely support a truck, 8-12 inches to support a car, 5 inches to support a snowmobile and 4 inches thick to support a person. ...No Weather For Tank Tops...

KEEP YOUR COAT HANDY: Alabama is entering a period of long drawn out cold weather. There will be some days when the temperatures recover to the 40s and 50s. From all the data our weather group can absorb, it looks like night-time temperatures will be below freezing at least for the next 7 or 8 nights. That is a bit unusual for winter in Alabama. This includes some lows in the low 20s over the weekend and maybe some upper teens in the first part of next week. Days will also be rather chilly, so this is going to be a period when your heating bill will ramp up. You might need to double check your outside pipes, take care of the pets and check on elderly friends. This is not a historic cold wave, but it is the longest period of cold weather we have had this season as well as the lowest temperatures by this weekend.

WHY ALL THE COLD: You have to look at the entire North American weather pattern to determine that. The highs and lows have arranged themselves with an intense low moving up the east coast and a strong high-pressure area building southward from Southern Canada all the way into the south. This will keep our wind blowing from out of the NW for the next several days, thus no real warm-ups.

PRECIPITATION: No big snow event out of this, but a steady cold rain will continue tonight and part of Thursday morning. A change to colder Thursday night might permit a mix of a few flurries after midnight and into early Friday morning. New Year's Day, however, will feature clearing, windy and much colder weather. The weekend looks cold and dry.

DRIVING ON SNOW: I have a good friend who lives in North Utah near the Idaho border. He reports heavy snow this morning—their first classic snowstorm of the season. He said that yesterday when they only had about ½ inch, the roads were slick. There were many slide offs and accidents. There were over 190 incidents along the Wasatch front highways, which proves again that people in all corners of the USA have trouble driving on icy roads.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Additional snow has fallen in the last 24 hours and the snow cover has advanced further south into West Texas and almost all of New Mexico. The snow blanket is now solid from Oklahoma and Missouri north to Canada. 21 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours at Pittsville, Vermont. The official NWS snow survey this morning shows that 64% of the lower 48 states have a blanket of snow. That is the most so far this season and is rather unusual for this early in the winter...cold temperatures this morning included 26 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska and 15 below at Wolf Point, Montana. That place is out on the wide open plains of NE Montana not far from the Canadian border. Absolutely nothing to hold back the cold air invasion except a few fences and maybe some tumbleweeds.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The majority owner is not feeling well and she kept Little Miss Molly awake most of the night. So, Molly did the unusual by going back to bed and sleeping most of the morning. On our one-half walk this morning, I did some highly scientific research and I am wondering if she needs a puppy-chiatrist. I counted 22 times when she left the walking track to do extensive sniffing of nothing but twigs and dead leaves. She avoided that twig that back-lashed her yesterday and hit her in the rear end. She will sometimes sniff one leaf for two minutes. She seems compelled to go to the bathroom on every one of those. After three or four stops, she only has one or two drops left for each leaf. Even so, between stops, she was pulling me along the track so fast that her hind legs were drooping and her rear end was almost dragging the concrete like a mule pulling an overloaded wagon. I let her be the boss every morning and i think she knows that. Life goes on.

...Extreme Cold Ahead...

Some extremely cold air is heading toward Alabama over the next ten days. It will be important that Alabamians monitor forecasts and outlooks over the next week in order to properly prepare for the possibility of a potentially damaging and protracted cold spell.

FINISHING TOUCH ON A WET YEAR: A trough over the western U.S. will be moving eastward over the next two days, spinning up a low pressure system over the western Gulf of Mexico. This low will spread rain into Alabama from the west this afternoon. Rain will become likely tonight. Rainfall amounts will average about half an inch across central sections of the state.

NEW YEAR'S EVE FORECAST: It will be mainly over by Thursday morning, although a few showers will linger through the day and into the overnight. Colder air will begin to flow into Alabama by Thursday afternoon and any leftover precipitation Thursday night will change over to light snow showers or snow flurries. No accumulation is expected, but it's not out of the question. The moon won't look any different New Year's Eve, if you get to see it at all through the clouds, but it will just be a special full moon. It will be a Blue Moon. The true definition of a Blue Moon is the second full moon in a month. Since the lunar cycle takes 29.5 days, this translates into an extra full moon in a month once every two and one half years. But it is really special when it occurs on New Year's Eve. That will happen this year. It is first time that has happened since 1990.

INTENSE COLD: Next week, we will see a setup that will bring some of the coldest air we have seen in a while in Alabama. A big upper low will find itself stranded over the Northeast and eastern Canada. Also stuck in the traffic jam will be a huge Arctic high over Central Canada. The flow between these systems will funnel extremely cold air southward from the Arctic Ocean over a deep snow cover and into the heart of the southern U.S. This pattern will not change for several days due to a big blocking high over Greenland. This will allow several reinforcing shots of cold air to lock us in the deep freeze for much of the next ten days. We could see four to five days of lows in the teens next week. We could also not get above freezing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The storm track stays suppressed to the south because of the intensity of the Arctic airmass. But if any storm systems do spin up, it could mean snow for the Deep South. The real story definitely will be the cold.

WEATHERBRAINS: I went back this afternoon and listened to Episode 204 with Accu-Weather's Joe Bastardi this afternoon. He was a great guest. And you get a bonus with that show: Alabama native Todd Foisy of the Alaska Weather Show. It's like extra innings in baseball. No show this week because of the two shows last week. We will be back on January 5th with Guest Hannah Bayman, a Weather Presenter across the pond for the BBC. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1894: The town of Frostproof, Florida was incorporated in 1886. Local real estate developers, intent on attracting citrus farmers to the area, lobbied to have the town named Frostproof. While popular opinion favored another name, the real estate agent who volunteered to deliver the towns official application to the U.S. Postal Service changed the application to read Frostproof. Frostproof was anything but, and a devastating freeze affected the area on this date, causing severe damage to agricultural interests across much of the state. Another bad freeze occurred the following February and was followed by another a couple of years later. The town petitioned to have its name changed, but it would be changed back in 1906 and is still called Frostproof today. Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @wxhistorian.

...Rain Returns Wednesday...

MUCH COLDER BY NEW YEAR'S DAY: Our weather is on the move. It is not staying the same for any length of time. Just think, two more days from now, we will be exactly one-third of the way through the winter. We still have two more months to try to figure out when there will be a snow threat or none at all. After that we get into March and April, which on a long-term basis is our most active severe weather season.

Pity your poor weather people. Not much chance of too much relaxing over the next several months, but we do not mind. That is what we are here for. Now back to the present. It was below freezing this morning in almost all of the 67 counties in Alabama. We list these few colder temperatures:

19 Hamilton

20 Pinson

22 Concord/Hueytown, Fayette, Dora, Muscle Shoals

23 Moody, Coker, Huntsville, Jasper, Livingston

24 Cullman, Winfield, Tuscaloosa, Sylacauga

25 Muscadine, Birmingham

The weather stays dry tonight, although clouds will gradually move in and thicken. It will not be quite as cold tonight with lows near freezing or slightly lower in many areas. Tomorrow some rain will reach Central Alabama by afternoon and it should become widespread over most of the state Wednesday night. The rain will still be around Thursday morning, but diminishing late.

FOCUS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY: The latest model runs suggest a chance of some light snow or flurries early Friday morning, mainly over the northern counties. As the day goes on, it will be clearing, windy and a lot colder. By Saturday morning, we will have some of our coldest temperatures so far this season with an average low of 22 across Central Alabama and maybe some upper teens in the NE Alabama valleys. Sunday morning lows could be 1 or 2 degrees colder, however, at least the weekend will be dry.

Another low-pressure area is taking shape in the west and southwest and it will move toward the east and northeast.

USA HIGHLIGHTS: The snow survey this morning showed just under 59% of the lower 48 states still had a snow cover. The blanket of snow is no longer solid across Northern Texas, but from parts of Oklahoma it is solid northward to Canada. Oklahoma City still has about 5 inches of snow on the ground and Des Moines nearly a foot...in the Northern Cascade Mountains of Washington State, the snow is so deep that if it all melted suddenly, it would produce the equivalent of 45 inches of rain...cold temperatures this morning 22 below at International Falls, Minnesota and 20 below at Northway, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Almost jerked off my feet again as soon as I was out the door on my morning walk with Molly. Two days ago she found a cat sitting under our Bradford pear tree in our backyard. The cat saw Molly and dove under a wooden fence nearby. Molly was right behind him and she disappeared all except her little rear end and swishing tail. It took a long time to get her under control. This afternoon she went into the hedgerow where she likes to do a number one to irrigate some of the dead twigs. Her leash got hung on a twig and when she finally pulled it loose, the twig backlashed and hit Molly in the rear end. It scared her so badly she jumped all the way across the walking track and headed toward the back door where Dino lives. Then she turned around and gave me a look as if I had hit her. Life goes on—sometimes with a lot of excitement.

...Very Cold Weekend Ahead...

An active weather pattern will continue across Central Alabama for the next several days. We will experience a decent rain event as we get ready to wrap up a very wet 2009, then some of the coldest air we have seen in a while this weekend.

FOR YOUR TUESDAY: A little ridge of high pressure has bulged over the South this morning, giving us another bright and sunny day. It will still be chilly today, with high topping out around 50 degrees. Meanwhile, a trough over the western states will be rolling eastward. Low pressure will start to for along the Texas coast by Wednesday morning. This low will track along the Gulf Coast spreading rain into Alabama Wednesday afternoon and night. Rainfall amounts will average about one inch.

NEW YEAR'S EVE FORECAST: The rain will move out early Thursday, but skies will remain mostly cloudy during the day ahead of a secondary disturbance. This is the disturbance we thought might produce some snow across the Southland, but it looks like now that temperatures will be warm and moisture too sparse for anything but a little spotty light rain, possibly changing over briefly to a little light snow or flurries late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

SOME VERY COLD AIR AHEAD: Colder air will start to flow into Alabama behind the second disturbance. Despite clearing skies on Friday morning, temperatures will struggle to reach forty degrees. It will also be quite windy on Friday with northwesterly winds averaging 12-25 mph. Lows by Saturday morning will be well into the lower 20s, with some teens in the normally colder spots. We will only briefly go above freezing during the day Saturday, setting the stage for a very cold night. Many spots will see teens by Sunday morning. Sunday looks like a repeat performance of Saturday as very cold air continues to engulf the state.

I am @wxhistorian.

...The Parade Continues...

THE WEATHER IS ALWAYS CHANGING: That is not totally true because we occasionally get into stagnant weather patterns when the weather stays almost exactly the same for days on end. That happens most often in the summer, but rarely in the winter. So, winter is keeping the tradition alive by changing every few days. Colder air was moving in today and, with a high-pressure area pushing into the southeast tomorrow behind the cold front that came through today, we will have some cold temperatures when you get up tomorrow morning to walk the dog, grab the newspaper, or go to work. We expect a widespread freeze with average lows across Central Alabama in the mid 20s. Again, some of the colder valleys may be in the low 20s. Would not even be surprised to hear a low somewhere in NE Alabama around 19-20. That really is not unusual for this deep into winter.

The old thermometer will bounce back to the upper 40s Tuesday afternoon and again Wednesday. By Wednesday, some more rain will be spreading into the state and it should become widespread Wednesday night. A good chance of rain continues on Thursday. Another surge of colder air on Friday with temperatures getting no higher than about 39.

SNOW IN THE PICTURE: Not really, but the early morning GFS model runs indicate some light snow or flurries as far south as Montgomery Friday morning. But I doubt seriously if there will be any accumulation. The expected low is expected to be about 32 here in Central Alabama.

NEW YEARS DAY: Decent weather. We cannot expect ideal weather this time of year. Early morning temperatures should be around 32. The high on New Years Day about 42. Clouds will be thinning out during the day.

LAST NIGHT: Most of the state had sub-freezing temperatures early today with a number of stations in the north having mid 20s and it was freezing all the way down to Mobile.

ROAMING: 78 in Ft. Lauderdale was the warmest in the USA Sunday...coldest this morning was 19 below zero at Laramie, Wyoming, home of the University of Wyoming and where Pat Dye was head coach for a time...the coldest in Alaska was 17 below at Arctic Village...two sample snow amounts from Alaska: 18 inches at Nome and 39 inches at Valdez...the morning snow survey showed that 61% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover compared to 10% a month ago today...the snow cover is solid from North Texas all the way to Canada...across the Northern USA, there is a consistent blanket of snow from the Cascade and Sierra-Nevada Mountain ranges in the far West eastward across the Great Lakes and Midwest to New England...one example, in the high country of the West (chosen because of its unique name) was Porcupine, Montana with 111 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Busy, busy time of the year. Went into a resting mode Saturday after all of our Christmas guests on Friday. I have tried to play more games with Little Miss Molly. The more I play with her, the more she wants to play. I worked long hours last night and had just settled into my recliner for a 12-minute power nap this morning, which happened to coincide with Little Miss Molly waking up. She came out of the bedroom, crossed her front legs, and pulled herself across the carpet while stretching and yawning. Then she grabbed some of her balls and tossed them at me. I was too tired for an immediate ballgame and she was sorely disappointed. She has learned to do some first-class pouting and it makes me feel bad, but I will make it up to her later today. I will play ball with her so long that she will be crying uncle and wanting to curl up and go to sleep. We want to thank everyone for e-mail Christmas greetings addressed to the little girl and to us. I will acknowledge all of those. Life goes on.

...Active Pattern Continues...

We are getting off to a cold start across Central Alabama this morning in the wake of a reinforcing shot of cold air that is moving into the state. Highs today will struggle to make it into the lower 40s, despite near total sunshine. A brisk northwesterly wind will make it feel even chillier. Expect another solid freeze tonight, with lows in the lower and middle 20s. Tuesday will be partly cloudy and a little warmer, although the mercury will find it difficult to reach 50 degrees.

OUR NEXT WEATHERMAKER: Our next weather system is a trough of low pressure that is diving southeastward into Old Mexico this morning. The system will translate east northeastward, bringing snows to places like the mountains of northern Arizona tonight. It will bring snow to North Texas on Tuesday, where accumulations are expected again in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. By Tuesday afternoon, the trough will be spinning up a surface low pressure system near Brownsville, Texas. This low will track along the Gulf Coast. Moisture ahead of the system will push into Alabama during the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday. It will begin as sleet or a light wintry mix. This precipitation will change to rain by mid-morning. Any freezing or frozen precipitation will be gone by midmorning as temperatures warm above freezing. Still, Wednesday will be a raw day, with rain and chilly temperatures in the lower and middle 40s. Rainfall amounts will average one half inch.

SNOW FOR NEW YEARS? Rain will end by Thursday morning as the first system departs to the east. Last night's model runs were not as bullish on the idea of a strong disturbance passing through the area on New Year's Eve. So there is quite a bit of uncertainty in the forecast. For now we will call for a chance of rain changing to snow Thursday night. There is a chance that there will be an accumulating snow, but it is too early to tell how great that chance is. Much colder air will pour into Alabama starting Thursday night. Highs on Friday won't get out of the 30s and it will likely not get above freezing Saturday. Look for lows in the teens over the weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly netcast that's all about weather. People all over the world are discovering that this is the place to feed their interest in weather. Have you subscribed on iTunes? It's free. Have you told your friends? The sixty minute show is hosted by our very own James Spann. The regular cast of characters includes J.B. Elliott, Brian Peters, Kevin Selle, Tim Coleman and me. We did two shows last week since our esteemed host is on vacation. The guests included Joe Bastardi from Accu-Weather, Todd Foisy of the Alaska Weather Show and Dr. Joe Schaefer, the SPC Director. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008: Two avalanches buried eleven snowmobilers in the backcountry near Fernie, British Columbia in the Elk Valley. Three people managed to dig out, but eight were killed. The first avalanche buried a group of seven while they were resting at the foot of a hill. The second avalanche buried four snowbilers that came to the rescue of the first group. Avalanche advisories had been in effect. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Cold Weather Ahead...

High clouds have increased most of Alabama this afternoon. The only exception is over the Northwest part of the state, where skies have remained sunny. Light radar echoes are showing up over South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, but most of this is not reaching the ground. Temperatures were near 50 degrees in the I-20 corridor. Readings are colder over the Northwest, despite the brighter sunshine. To the north, we find the upper low that caused the Christmas Blizzard still rotating around the Great Lakes. It is moving east this afternoon, and a lobe of energy rotating around it push a reinforcing shot of colder air southeastward out of Missouri tonight. This means more cold and dry conditions for Alabama through Tuesday, before our next weathermaker presents some interesting forecast issues.

VERY COLD: Readings tonight across the area will drop into the middle 20s on average, actually on the low side of the middle 20s, with some spots getting into the lower 20s. A chilly northwest wind will make it feel even colder overnight. Monday will be really cold, with highs struggling to get out of the 30s in many locations. Monday night readings will be in the middle 20s again. Tuesday will feature partly cloudy skies with a high near 50 degrees on average. Clouds will start to thicken Tuesday night as a trough moves out of the Southwest U.S. and a low forms along the Texas coast. Enough moisture could get in here during the pre-dawn and early morning hours on Wednesday to produce sleet across Central Alabama. The precipitation should be light enough to preclude real problems.

RAIN, THEN COLDER AGAIN: The low will move eastward, changing the wintry mix over to all rain during the day. Rain will be likely through Wednesday night, with average amounts around one inch. There is some concern that the rain could change over to freezing rain for a brief time Thursday morning, but for now, we will leave that out of the forecast. Thursday should be mostly cloudy as the rain departs. The vent won't be over though, as the main trough doesn't swing through until Thursday night. There are still signs it could produce a snow event across parts of North and Central Alabama Thursday night into Friday morning. A dusting to an inch or two or snow is a possibility. While it is just a chance at this point, it is something we will watch closely. Bitter cold follows for the weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: Winter storm preparedness is the theme for Monday night's show. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Congratulations to Ellen Bloomfield of Round Lake Heights, IL, who won Eric Pinder's Book Life at the Top. You could win Mike Nelson's Colorado Weather Almanac just by following the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Dense fog in the Tampa Bay area caused a series of chain reaction accidents on the soaring Sunshine Skyway Bridge, involving 50 vehicles. One person was killed and 24 injured. The 1,280-foot span across the mouth of Tampa Bay was closed in both directions. Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter: www.twitter.com/wxhistorian.
