...Dangerous Cold Building...

We started preaching about this extended cold spell that we are going to be enduring for the next ten days or longer. And it is increasingly becoming evident that it is going to be a memorable one. I am not sure we have even been aggressive enough with our forecasts of the cold. I hope that everyone will take this protracted cold seriously. It's always serious when you have a couple of nights of subzero readings. But I am not sure that ten days of daytime readings in the middle 30s and lows in the teens are not more damaging. Make sure that you think about the effects such cold could have on your vulnerable property, plants, pets and people and take appropriate precautions. Energy usage will be through the roof, unfortunately, as well.

BROKEN RECORD: A traffic jam in the upper atmosphere will set the stage for a persistent and efficient transport of very cold air out of places like Minnesota over an extensive snowpack and deep into the South. Temperatures in the 40s will be as rare as hen's teeth through the 10th or so. Highs over the next five days will be 37, 38, 36, 35 and 39, and lows will be 23, 17, 13, 12 and 18 on average. But it will be dry.

THE "S" WORD: I am like the rest of you. I grew up living for snow events. When temperatures like this came along back in 1976, 77 and 78, you just prayed for a Gulf low. Snow forecasts are always difficult in Alabama, and I am certain there will be difficult scenarios in the next couple of weeks. One will be Thursday. A reinforcing cold front may spread light snow into Alabama. It is too early to tell if there will
be any accumulations, but warm ground won't be a problem.

BACK IN THE DEEP FREEZE: Some of the coldest air of this outbreak may be next Friday and Saturday morning. Single digits will be very possible Friday and Saturday morning, especially if we end up with any snowcover. Hopefully, things will start to improve by Monday the 11th or so.

WEATHERBRAINS: Joe Bastardi, Todd Foisy and Dr. Joe Schaefer joined the crew for two memorable shows just before Christmas. Our next show will on Tuesday, January 5th, when Hannah Bayman of the BBC will join the crew. Other upcoming Guest WeatherBrains include Mike Nelson from Channel 9 in Denver, Les Lemon, author David Laskin and hurricane expert, Dr. Keith Blackwell. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19 inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
