ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator, smart
digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small projects
like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service disruptions to
your neighborhood.

...Refreshing For July...

It's not often that we get to talk about low temperatures near 60
degrees in July, but with some drier air moving in across the area; it
will be a possibility tonight. In fact, some northern locations will
drop into the upper 50s. On average tonight, we will be some 7-9
degrees below normal with lows averaging around 62F. The record low
for July 22nd is 55F. For July 23rd, it is 52F. The coolest July
reading ever in the Magic City is 51F on July 15, 1967.

JUST HOW RARE: Dusting off the record books, let's look back and see
just how rare cool nights are in July. At Birmingham, consistent
weather records go back to 1895. During the time periods 1895-2007,
we have seen a low of 62 or cooler some 127 times. That sounds like
it would be a fairly common occurrence, happening about once per year,
but really, it isn't. It has not happened since July 14, 2001. The
cool readings come in bunches during cool spells, happening three or
four times in a single month and not again for several years. Now,
readings in the 50s are even more rare. Only forty July mornings have
been below 60 degrees. The last time that happened was July 4, 1996.
The month of July 1967 was remarkably cool, with four mornings in the
50s. But even more amazing was July 1947, when six mornings were in
the fifties.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Dry conditions will continue through tomorrow
with drier air in place over North and Central Alabama. Highs this
afternoon and tomorrow will be near normal, with highs right around 90
degrees.

CHANGES IN THE FORECAST: It is increasingly looking like the upper
low that will develop later today or tomorrow over the Mid-Atlantic
states will be a bigger player in our weather. The models try to
develop precipitation as early as tomorrow, but it will likely hold
off until Monday. As the low retrogrades, or moves backwards into the
Ohio Valley, we will see scattered showers and thunderstorms
developing across the state. Moisture levels really spike by the end
of the week and a surface low will develop to our northwest. This
will give us fairly numerous showers and thunderstorms in the Friday
and Saturday time frame.

TROPICS: Conditions are becoming a little more favorable for the
tropical wave north of the Greater Antilles to undergo some
development. We will also watch for development off the coast of the
Carolinas as our front moves offshore later today.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Highest elevation F4 tornado ever observed
crossed the Continental Divide as it cut a twenty-four mile path
through the Teton Wilderness on the south side of Yellowstone National
Park. At one point, damage path was 2 miles wide. 15,000 acres of
trees were blown down. Many of the trees were mature 80-100 foot pine
trees. Some of the damage may not have been from a tornado.

...Stormy Friday...

An unusually high amplitude trough of low pressure resulted in some
intense weather across parts of Alabama yesterday. Behind the frontal
system that pushed into the state last night, much drier air will flow
into the area today on northerly winds. This will allow for some
refreshing overnight lows tonight and tomorrow night.

SEVERE WEATHER: A line of thunderstorms entered North Alabama during
the morning hours and it moved steadily southward. Sunny skies ahead
of the line allowed for intense heating and the mercury warmed in the
upper 80s to near 90. Instabilities were high and the line
intensified. Storms in the Gadsden area organized into a mesoscale
convective vortex, a thunderstorm complex that takes on a life of its
own. It rose to a height of 55,000 feet and caused wind damage in
Etowah and Calhoun Counties. As it crossed the Georgia border, it
caused large hail and wind damage around Carrollton. As this system
pulled off to the east southeast, sinking air behind it left the
Birmingham Metro mainly high and dry. Then activity over western
Alabama began feeding on the rich unstable air near the Mississippi
border. The Tuscaloosa area took a pounding with golfball sized hail,
flooding and wind damage. Rainfall amounts were moderate in areas
that saw good storms, but the rain came down so quickly that flooding
resulted in a few locations.

THE FORECAST: Drier air will filter into Alabama today. Shower
activity today will be limited to far South Alabama. We should stay
dry through the remainder of the weekend. A big powerhouse of an
upper level low will develop near the Pennsylvania/Maryland border
late tonight. This low will track back to the west and southwest,
setting up shop in t he Ohio Valley by midweek. We will see a chance
of showers over eastern sections Monday through Wednesday. By
Thursday, our flow will be a moist one again, and showers and
thunderstorms will be fairly numerous by Thursday and Friday. That's
good. We still need the rain. Especially within the area protected
by the Greater Birmingham Anti-Rain Force Field, which came all rain
away on Friday.

TROPICS: A disturbance extending north from the Caribbean doesn't
stand much of a chance of developing as it is being shadowed by an
upper low pressure system to the north. We will watch the area off
the coast of the Carolinas by late in the weekend for the possibility
of development.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: People in Phoenix downplay the extreme heat
that they live with during the summer months each year by reminding
visitors that it is a dry heat. Indeed, the heat is a small price to
pay for the city's scenic beauty and delightful weather most of the
year. When the mercury soared to a broiling 117°F on July 21st, it
was just a few degrees short of the all-time record for Phoenix
(122°F.) The overnight temperature the next morning could only manage
to fall to 96°F, setting the all-time record warm low reading for the
city. It was all part of the warmest month ever recorded in Phoenix
(97.7°F.) Shelters actually opened during the daylight hours to
provide relief for homeless folks.

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Friday July 20, 2007

=========================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart
digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's safe
to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small
projects
like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or installing a
mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to
your neighborhood.

Visit http://www.al1call.com for more information.
=========================================================

A DRY, LESS HUMID WEEKEND: There is some sort of a front lurking
near the Tennessee River this afternoon. With the upper air pattern
becoming more favorable, the front should continue to push southward,
possibly reaching South Alabama by Saturday afternoon. It will stall
somewhere over the south part of the state, rest a while and then
start back slowly northward leading some more moisture into North
Alabama.

So what does all this maneuvering mean? We can still get a few more
thunderstorms here in Central Alabama this evening, as the front
struggles to get through. For Saturday, we believe that most of the
showers and thunderstorms will be limited to roughly the south third
of the state. Here in Central Alabama, Saturday should be dry with
more sun than clouds. You will also notice a drop in the humidity.
Sunday should be all sunshine with cooler early morning temperatures.
Highs will be near 90, but the humidity will be low enough so that
you won't notice that so much. Early Sunday morning, we are project
63 for Central Alabama, which will feel real good. Some of the North
Alabama valleys could possibly cool to about 58. See our day-by-day
forecast for all of the details.

A line of thunderstorms rumbled across the area today, including some
that became severe. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was posted for much
of North and Central Alabama. Wind damage was reported in several
locations. A wind gust was clocked at 65 mph at Piedmont in NE
Calhoun County. Some very beneficial rain was noted over a number of
North and Central Alabama counties, including over 2 inches in some
communities. For the next several days, rain will be scarce for the
north half of the state at least.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A nervous weather area continues from Puerto Rico
NE into the Atlantic for several hundred miles. It is caused by a
tropical wave and an upper-level low-pressure area. Upper winds could
become more favorable during the next couple of days for possible
tropical development.

AT THE BEACH: Still a good chance of showers and thunderstorms for
most of Saturday. After that, the weather dries out with mostly
sunshine on Sunday, only a few afternoon storms on Monday and about a
1 in 3 chance on Tuesday. Highs 90 to 92.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I sure do hate to hear about three wildfires
out of control in Zion National Park in South Utah. That is one of my
favorite national parks. Already 8,000 acres have been burned. 116 in
Death Valley was the hottest yesterday. 38 was the low this morning
at Lake Tahoe, California, where Bill Murray is hanging out.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have been busier than the proverbial
one-armed paper hanger today. Have hardly spoken to Little Miss
Molly. There are some days I have to neglect her. Tomorrow is my off
day and I will make it up to her. I might even drag her out of bed
just before daylight for a nice cool walk and then a big ballgame.
She does not mind that at all. She wakes up very happy. That makes me
happy. Life goes on.....

...Strong Storms Possible...

Usually in mid to late July, the primary storm track across North
America is well to the north of here, often in Canada. But during the
next 48 hours the jet will take a big dip (we call it a trough) over
the eastern part of the nation, and that will help to drive a rare
July cold front into Alabama tomorrow. We really don't like to use the
words "cold front" time time of the year, but there is a very real
possibility that much drier air will move into the northern half of
the state by tomorrow afternoon, which will mean cooler nights.

Before the dry air gets here, we expect a pronounced increase in the
number of showers and thunderstorms around here this afternoon and
tonight. With a belt of stronger winds aloft involved and some decent
surface based instability, we might see a few storms that are strong
to severe during the late afternoon or evening hours. We expect a
majority of the storms between 3:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight, and most
communities can expect about one-half inch of rain. The heavier
downpours will bring isolated spots over one inch of rain.

THE WEEKEND: Drier will slowly drop southward tomorrow, and we will
maintain a chance of scattered showers mainly during the morning
hours. By afternoon, we figure the bulk of the showers and storms will
be south of I-20, or south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to
Anniston. The sky will be clear tomorrow night, and with lower
dewpoints we expect a low in the 60 to 65 degree range by daybreak
Sunday. This isn't too far from the record low for Sunday (July 22),
55 degrees (established in 1957). Sunday promises to be a day with
almost maximum available sunshine and low humidity.

LONG RANGE: Showers and storms should remain rather scarce on Monday
and Tuesday of next week, but returning moisture should mean a chance
of scattered afternoon showers and storms during the latter half of
the week.

TROPICS: A large area of disturbed weather is moving through the
eastern Caribbean; this wave will continue to move to the
west/northwest during the next 36 hours, but we expect it to turn
north, and northeast before reaching the coast of the Southeast U.S.
While upper air winds for now are not favorable for any development,
it could become a hybrid type system off the Atlantic coast, and it
could bring wind and rain to the upper half of the Atlantic coast late
in the weekend. One way or
another, it should not impact our weather in any way.

AT THE BEACH: We expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day along
the Gulf coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores through the weekend
with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. The SST (sea surface
temperature) at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (at the southern tip of
Mobile Conty) last night was a warm 86 degrees.

HODGEPODGE: Chicago was soaked with 1.70" of rain yesterday.
Birmingham's high was 92 degrees, the first time we have reached 90 in
five days. Montgomery and Muscle Shoals were the hottest places in the
state with 95 degrees.

COOLER WEEKEND NIGHTS: Some strong thunderstorms developed over NE
Alabama this afternoon, but they were few in number elsewhere. In
fact, by mid-afternoon almost no showers or storms had developed
across West and South Alabama. For a brief time, a Severe
Thunderstorm Warning affected part of Jackson and DeKalb Counties.

Across Central Alabama, the risk of thunderstorms for the remainder
of this afternoon and tonight is rather small, but there will be an
increase in action on Friday. By nightfall Friday, a front will be
trying to cross the Tennessee River. This will increase the showers
and thunderstorms Friday afternoon and Friday night. We believe that
most of the showers will move south of the Birmingham area by
Saturday afternoon as the humidity starts to drop. There are
indications the front will push on southward to near the Gulf Coast
by Sunday morning and rest on the beach. So, for Central Alabama,
when you get up Sunday morning temperatures should be in the pleasant
mid 60s and maybe near 60 in some of the North Alabama valleys.
Sunday should feature mostly sunshine with lower humidity and Monday
should be dry also.

DROUGHT NOTES: The latest U.S. Drought Monitor still has the north
half of Alabama under an Extreme or Exceptional drought category in
areas from Aliceville to Clanton to Lanett. Some aspects of the
drought have improved. The countryside is a lot greener. Topsoil
moisture has improved, but many crops and rangeland are still in foul
condition. Only 12.60 inches of rain has fallen in Tuscaloosa so far
this year.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A bit of action underway. A tropical wave was over
the Eastern Caribbean moving WNW. No sign of organization right away.
The next named storm will be Chantal. There is plenty of warm ocean
water in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and even into the Western
Atlantic. Sea surface temperatures were 86 today in the Western
Caribbean, 85 in the Bay of Campeche and 86.2 in the middle Gulf of
Mexico. Tropical storms love that, just like a kid likes candy.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: New York City, with 27.12 inches of rain this
year, nearly doubles Birmingham's total. Their surplus for the year
is now almost 10 inches. 117 was the hot spot in Death Valley
Wednesday. Coolest this morning was in the same state with 40 at
Alturus, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Even though I needed to catch up on non-
weather duties, I plunked down on the couch last night to catch up
reading the Birmingham News, USA Today, two news magazines, the
Moundville Times and Progressive Farmer. Three hours later, I
realized I had spent much of that time playing and loving Little Miss
Molly who was right by my side. While I was eating popcorn, she was
standing right in my face begging. The majority owner says no. The
little girl got at least 30 or 40 belly rubs. She loves to throw head
on my leg and stretch her neck so I can rub it also. After all that
happened, we had to go for a midnight walk. She got a treat and then
she insisted on a ballgame. No wonder I wake up groggy some mornings,
while that little rascal can sleep as late as she wants to. All is
not fair in the world of dogs and humans, but life goes on.....

...Widely Scattered Storms...

Yesterday in Birmingham the high was 88 degrees, and it was the fifth
consecutive day with temperatures below 90 degrees. Not bad at all for
mid-July in Alabama, but our streak might end today as we are
forecasting a high of 92 degrees. The hotter afternoon is because we
expect a better supply of sunshine today, with only widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and early tonight. Humidity
levels will remain fairly high, making the afternoon feel pretty
sticky.

TO THE NORTH: A sharp surface front is moving southward parts of the
Midwest this morning, and that front should bring a general increase
in the number of showers and storms late tomorrow and tomorrow night
as that boundary gets close to Alabama. Most of the rain will come
from about 3:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight, with most communities
getting about one hour of rain.

OUR WEEKEND: Lots of debate in the weather office; and quite frankly
some disagreement among computer models concerning weekend weather.
The NAM (North American Mesoscale) model pushes dry air quickly into
North Alabama late tomorrow night, and suggests we will be totally
rain-free on Saturday. However, the GFS (Global Forecast System) model
is slower, and still has the front near the Alabama/Tennessee border
at midday Saturday. Considering the time of year, we will side with
the GFS for now and maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms
on Saturday. Both models bring the drier air southward Saturday night,
and for now we will go ahead and forecast a sunny day on Sunday with
no rain and lower humidity. That really doesn't happen too often in
late July in Alabama, but the idea is supported by a very high
amplitude upper air pattern, with a nice upper trough up and down the
eastern seaboard of the U.S.

NEXT WEEK: Moist air slowly returns, and a few scattered, mainly
afternoon and evening showers and storms should return to Alabama by
the middle part of next week. Looks like highs mostly in the low 90s,
right at normal levels for this time of the year.

CONGRATULATIONS to Troy Dungan of WFAA-TV (Channel 8) in Dallas on his
retirement from the world of television weather. I competed against
Troy in the mid 1980s when I was the lead weather anchor at KDFW-TV
(Channel 4) in Dallas, which was the CBS affiliate at the time. Troy
started at WFAA on July 19, 1976, when times were different and life
was a little slower. Many folks know him for his bow ties, but he is
an excellent communicator and was always a calm voice during severe
weather in North Texas. It is funny how many people think we have the
easiest job in the world, but folks need to walk a mile in our shoes.
We have gone from doing simple weathercasts on the news on TV to an
staggering array of blog posts, podcasts, Internet videos, radio
weather jobs, and speaking engagements. This is a harsh business that
is often thankless, and for someone to handle weather at one station
for 31 years is an amazing accomplishment. Thanks for the great work,
Troy... I hope you can get some rest now!

push down into Alabama this weekend. We have refused to accept that
scenario until today, but it looks as if the front could eventually
push down into South Alabama by Sunday.

As the front gets closer to us on Friday, that will increase the
number of showers and thunderstorms, so we are designated Friday to
be our wettest day. Before Friday, however, we will still have a
slight chance of a shower or a thunderstorm later today, this
evening, and again Thursday. If we had to pick a time window now, we
would say Friday afternoon would be the wettest part of the day.
There may still be a few showers or thunderstorms around on Saturday
morning, mostly south of the Birmingham area.

Just because Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-
Anniston-Gadsden areas will get a break from showers and storms over
the weekend, it does not mean that everyone will. It is likely that
scattered thunderstorms will be on the Gulf Coast weather menu right
on through the weekend.

We are projecting a low of 66 for Sunday morning. Some of our
favorite valleys in North and NE Alabama could get closer to 60.
Sunday looks like a day of mostly sunshine and the humidity will be
lower.

AT THE BEACH: The best chance of showers and thunderstorms along the
Alabama/NW Florida coast will be Saturday and possibly Sunday. For
tomorrow, however, only a few will be around. High temperatures will
be 90 to 92. The water temperature just off shore is about 86.

OUR INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: 9.47 inches of rain fell at
McGregor, Iowa last night and early this morning. A lot of flooding
in that area. The Big Apple got another inch of rain and they are far
ahead for the year. It was 105 below zero today in Vostok, Antarctica—
exactly what was forecast. A risk of severe weather this afternoon
and tonight over a broad area from Kentucky, north to Michigan and
Wisconsin, and west to Nebraska and the Dakotas. This includes an
enhanced moderate risk for Iowa and Northern Illinois. 102 forecast
this afternoon for Boise and 113 in Phoenix. Denver will have 100. It
was 118 in Death Valley yesterday and 38 this morning in West
Yellowstone Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure will be glad when I can figure out
the dog food dilemma for my little girl. Doing a lot of research, the
majority owner and I agree that we could eliminate one eating out per
month and afford a more expensive dry dog food for Little Miss Molly.
We absolutely do not want to fumble around and feed her anything that
would have a preservative that could cause cancer later. If something
were to happen to that little girl, I think I would build an oversize
grave and crawl in with her. When we took our half-mile walk late
yesterday, the humidity was 180% (felt like), because we had just
gotten a big rain and dense patches of fog were forming. Molly looked
a little puzzled by that. She has missed seeing her little Yorkie
boyfriend on the track for nearly a week and she has not seen Jo-Jo,
Bridgett or Mattie. It makes her day to see one of those little dogs
and rub noses or to get a belly rub from one of their owners. Some
days I have to love her more to make up for the misses. Life goes
on......

...Summer Showers Continue...

Moisture laden air will hang over Alabama again today, and like
previous days we will deal with more showers and thunderstorms in
scattered spots. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is about
one in three, and while most of the showers and storms will come this
afternoon, we can't rule out a few morning showers. And, because of
the limited amount of sunshine, daytime temperatures will remain below
normal, with most spots reaching only the mid to upper 80s this
afternoon.

Not much change in this pattern is expected through Friday, with more
clouds than sunshine tomorrow and Friday with the continued risk of
scattered showers and thunderstorms.

THE WEEKEND: The primary American computer model, is beginning to hint
that drier air will invade North Alabama over the weekend, with the
majority of the showers and storms shifting down into the southern
half of the state. This is in response to a very high amplitude upper
trough forming over the eastern seaboard during the next few days. We
won't buy into this scenario just yet, but if the model continues to
trend in this direction, we will greatly reduce the chance of showers
on Saturday and Sunday.

MORE RAIN TO CELEBRATE: Rainfall totals around Alabama yesterday
included 1.47" in the southeast part of Trussville, 1.30" at Crumly
Chapel (just northwest of Birmingham), 1.00" at Redmont Park near
English Village in Mountain Brook, .94" in downtown Birmingham at the
SKYCAM site atop the Daniel Building on 20th Street, and .83" at
Blountsville. While most of the storms yesterday were not severe, a
funnel cloud was seen briefly around midday in Limestone County near
Mooresville. It did not touch the ground.

AT THE BEACH: We are expecting routine summer weather along the
central Gulf coast through the weekend; about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine
each day with a few scattered showers and storms around from Panama
City westward to Gulf Shores. Highs along the immediate coast will be
in the 87 to 90 degree range, and as of last night the sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 84 degrees.

TROPICS: While a few disorganized waves are seen across the Caribbean
and the Atlantic, tropical storm formation is not expected through the
rest of the week.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday
morning was Pilot Point, Alaska with 37 degrees. Spincich Lake (yep,
that is the correct spelling), Michigan dropped to 39 degrees.Peoria,
IL was soaked with 1.38" of rain, and there was even a little rain in
the Desert Southwest, where Phoenix reported .02". That didn't help to
ease the heat too much; the high in Phoenix yesterday was 112
degrees. Other hot cities yesterday included Rapid City, South Dakota
with 101 and Omaha, NE with 100. The hottest spot was Death Valley, CA
with 118 degrees.

COUNTRYSIDE A LOT GREENER: Yes, the drought is still with us. There
are several different aspects to a drought. For sure, the more
frequent showers over the last couple of weeks have helped the
situation, especially with lawns, gardens and, to a lesser extent,
crops. We still need a lot of rain to bring the reservoirs and river
flow back up to normal.

The Agriculture Department reported that only 27% of Alabama had very
short soil moisture as of yesterday. That was quite an improvement
from the 48% the previous week.

We got some more good showers this morning, especially over the
northern part of the state. The Crestline section of East Birmingham
received 0.63 of an inch of rain in only 10 minutes. The more
numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon were over the
northern third of the state. A number of communities were getting
locally heavy rain.

We have showers and thunderstorms in the forecast every day for the
rest of the week. Probably our most questionable day is Saturday. For
now, we will say scattered showers and thunderstorms, but there are
some indications that a weak front could reach Central Alabama
pushing the main showers to the south. We can fine-tune that later.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: No tropical storm development expected in the
next few days in the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Caribbean and
Gulf of Mexico…most of the world's fresh water is locked away in the
polar icecaps, especially Antarctica…however, 1/5 of the supply is
contained in the Great Lakes…Lake Superior is the largest and
deepest. It could hold all of the water that is in all five lakes
plus two or three more Lake Eries…121 was the hottest yesterday in
Death Valley…42 in Pellston, Michigan this morning and 40 in Barrow
and King Salmon, Alaska…on this date in 1872, there was a rain and
snow mix in Denver—their only snow ever in July. It is not counted as
official, because official records did not start until 1882…103 below
zero today at Vostok, Antarctica. It is expected to be 106 below by
tomorrow…while Birmingham suffered in 105-degree heat on this date in
1980 (see James Spann's blog story), we were scraping ice off our
windshield camping in the high country at Duck Creek, Utah. We missed
the entire heat wave.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Little Miss Molly strolled into
our home over 4 years ago, I knew she would become part of the
family. Little did I realize that she would become so much a part. We
cannot keep our hands off her and we talk to her a whole bunch when
she is awake. She looks us straight in the eye like she understands
every word. At least 10 neighbors that also use Molly's walking
track, stop and pet her every time we meet. She is a universally
loved little girl. We have been quite concerned in recent months
about the pet food scare and we are still not sure that we have it
solved. Life goes on....

...Moist Air Stays In Place...

A soggy airmass will remain parked across Alabama for the next three
to five days, meaning our weather won't change all that much. Each day
through Friday will feature more clouds than sunshine and a few
passing showers or thunderstorms. The best chance of the stronger
storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but a few
morning and late night showers are not out of the question. And,
unfortunately, there is no real skill in telling you exactly when and
where it will rain until the showers actually get on radar. The chance
of any one spot getting wet today and tomorrow is about one in two,
and most communities will see about one hour of rain.
Because of the clouds and showers, daytime temperatures will remain
below normal for the rest of the week, with afternoon highs generally
in the mid to upper 80s. A few spots might touch 90 briefly where the
sun pops out for a while.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We really don't see much reason to change the
forecast on Saturday and Sunday. On both days we expect a mix of sun
and clouds with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs
will be generally in the 88 to 91 degree range.

TROPICS: While we don't expect any tropical storm formation through
mid-week, we do see a
series of disorganized waves in scattered pockets across the Atlantic
basin, and waves over the African continent that are poised to emerge
into the eastern part of the Atlantic. We will keep an eye on these
waves since the tropical season tends to become much more active in
late July and early August. The remaining names for this season:
Chantal, Dean, Erin, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen,
Lorenzo, Melissa, Noel, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van,
and Wendy.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain total for the year is 14.18", and
our deficiency for the year is 17.53". The deficit for 2007 in
Tuscaloosa is 21.54", and 20.98" in Anniston.

A NICE BREAK FROM THE HEAT: Birmingham has failed to reach 90 degrees
for the last four days; the maximum temperatures have been 83 on
Friday, 79 on Saturday, 85 on Sunday, and 86 yesterday. The average
high this time of the year is 91.

TWENTY SEVEN YEARS AGO: The high in Birmingham on July 17, 1980 was
105 degrees, and the state was in the midst of a serious heat wave.
Over 80 percent of the state reached 100 degrees on that day, and
nearly one quarter of the state reached 105. The highest reading on
that day was 108 degrees recorded in the cities of Bessemer,
Aliceville, and Jasper. Read more on the great heat wave of 1980 on
the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog.

ROAMING: Heat is spreading northward through the western U.S.; Boise,
Idaho reached 100 degrees yesterday. Hottest spot in the nation was
Death Valley, California with 121.
